Town Hall meeting farce
residents from across orihuela Costa flocked to Playa Flamenca town hall on thursday for an open meeting with councillors... or so they thought. the Costa Blanca People was contacted by several people who attended and were furious about the way the meeting was conducted and how people were treated.
one of those was Peter houghton, President of the Party for independence of orihuela Costa. Peter said: “the meeting quickly descended into chaos as residents who had legitimate questions were rudely spoken to.” it soon became apparent that residents were not ging to be allowed to
speak to or ask questions of Councillor Angel noguera nor Fermin gonzalez. neither came into the room, although they were in the building. it was also made clear that each person could only pose one question and that it must be written down to be passed along. Peter said: “in the end it was left to stefan Pokroppa and ray Kearney to try and conduct this ‘none’ meeting. Many residents walked out in disgust, those who stayed were madeto queue up and leave their name and question which would be passed to the councillor.” “this is yet another slap in the face to the residents of orihuela Costa who had genuine questions about the state of the coast and the announcement of another large development at the top of the saturday Market opposite the school. “the citizens of orihuela Costa have the right to speak to their representatives in the town hall if they have a complaint or need advice. People had been invited to attend the meeting under the
impression that this is exactly why the meeting was being held. “Pilar de la horadada, san Miguel, Los Montesinos and Big Astro all hold regular clinics where residents can speak to their representatives about their concerns. Why is this not happening in orihuela Costa?” Peter believes that councillors know that the majority of citizens are not happy about the state of the coast, the lack of resources and infrastructure and so will not sit and discuss problems that they have no answers for. Peter continued: “the coast is where the majority of the municipal revenue is generated, but it continues tospent on the city, not orihuela Costa. Why should the residents of orihuela Costa continue to be abused in this manner? “there is nothing but total disrespect and disregard for the people of orihuela Costa by their government and its representatives, that much was made perfect clear on thursday.”
