One in ten vehicles uninsured
new figures released this week by traffic authorities have revealed that as many as one in ten vehicles on alicante province are uninsured. the figures reveal that around 130,496 vehicles are currently in the alicante province without being in possession of compulsory insurance. the figure represents 10% of the total vehicles in the province, and shows that the alicante province has the highest percentage total of uninsured vehicles in the Valencian Community.
in the Valencian Community there are currently 311,000 uninsured vehicles, of which more than 130,000 are in alicante (4.41% of the national total), 142,308 in Valencia (4.8 %) and 38,382 in Castellón (1.29%). the data, provided by the Government this week in a parliamentary response to pp deputies Óscar Gamazo and Jaime Mateo istúriz, corresponds to figures at January 31 of this year and put the total number of vehicles in Spain lacking
insurance at 2,957,530. the percentage of uninsured vehicles ranges between 9% and 11% across most Spanish provinces, but in cases such as Melilla it is as high as 23%. in the Valencian Community there has been a significant increase in recent months – for example, in april of last year according to a study by insurer línea directa, the figure did not exceed 260,000 vehicles, and now the figure is just over 50,000 higher. not having compulsory insurance carries a penalty fine of between 601 and 3,005 euros, and also makes it impossible for a vehicle to pass the technical Vehicle inspection (itV). provincial director of traffic antonio Jesús Fornes, estimates that “a significant number of those 130,000 vehicles are possibly those that have not been correctly deregistered” at a traffic headquarters. as for the possible reasons that lead drivers to not insure their cars, motorcycles, mopeds or trucks, Fornes stated that ‘factors to take into account’ are both ignorance of the mandatory nature of having insurance and “not requesting definitive cancellation in
traffic once the owner gets rid of a vehicle.” the provincial director of traffic also revealed that “soon the dGt will implement a series of measures aimed at eliminating from its records vehicles that are registered but are presumably not in circulation” which, in his opinion, “will contribute to lowering that figure.” on the other hand, he maintains that “citizens must continue to be informed about the regulations to be complied with.” regarding future regulations, Fornes

revealed that the dGt is working jointly with Unespa and the General directorate of insurance so that, soon, personal mobility vehicles (VMp) and electric scooters must also be insured on a mandatory basis.

Horrific assault of 11 year old girl in Benejúzar happened more than once a group attack by schoolchildren on an 11-yearold girl in Benejúzar happened several times on the same day, it has now emerged. the brutal beating of the 11 year old victim by seven classmates (six girls and one boy) was videoed by the aggressors. the girl’s mother has received several recordings of the attack, showing that the violent beatings occurred several times on the same day. the latest video to come to light shows an attack in the doorway of Benejúzar’s medical centre. the young victim appears in the foreground of the video and appears to ask her attackers, before they strike, if “after this” she can go home. those involved, almost in unison, respond in the negative and between laughing, warn her not to tell her mother. they then grab her hair and drag her several metres along the ground before kicking and punching her. only one of the other children speaks up to shout ‘enough’. another video, seemingly recorded in the same place, shows how several of the youngsters confront the girl, shout at her and insult her. the
victim, who had to wear a neck brace after these beatings, barely reacts. the Juvenile prosecutor’s office began investigating the attacks after a video showing the girl being beaten in the bathroom of Benejúzar library emerged. not only was the brutal attack videoed by the aggressors but it was also broadcast live on video call to several other children. the
attack went on for five long minutes. another of the harrowing videos shared showed the aftermath of one of the attacks, showing the girl crying after being beaten while the other children jeer her. the girl’s parents have provided the new video evidence of the attacks before the Juvenile prosecutor’s
office, which is investigating the matter. a command of the Guardia Civil collated the various videos last Monday at a meeting attended by parents, staff from the town hall and the antonio Sequeros School which the children attend. the prosecutor’s office, however, hardly has the power to act. the aggressors, aged between 10 and 13, are not responsible for the criminal acts they have committed (the law establishes responsibility at 14) and they cannot be investigated, although the parents of those involved - who are named in the complaint - can face civil liability and a demand for compensation for the actions of their children. While the children involved (for whom school expulsion proceedings will be opened) are being punished at school (detention at recess, for example), locals in the small town of Benejúzar claim that some among the children and their families are allegedly criticising the victim and her parents for having made the matter public. in Benejúzar everyone knows each other and for the young victim, who has not been out since she was attacked, it is even harder.

Lack of specialists causes concern
the lack of anaesthesiologists, radiologists and emergency doctors is putting pressure on hospitals in torrevieja, orihuela and alcoy. Medical unions say that between the three hospitals there are dozens of unfilled vacancies. the three hospitals are desperately looking for anaesthesiologists, emergency doctors, radiologists, Gps and paediatricians as well as other specialists. in torrevieja hospital, the most urgent positions to fill are radiologists. Unions say that the lack of these specialists has forced outsourcing and consequently there are significant delays for patients. “radiology is the basis of everything, and many times the patients have to stay longer in hospital due to the delay of the tests,” says ana linares of medical union CSiF. there are also delays in diagnosis “because right now it is taking a month” for results to come back. the CSiF has also warned that there will soon be only three cardiologists of the six needed in torrevieja. a dozen professionals are also missing in the emergency department, and primary Care also needs Gps and paediatricians, forcing other doctors to be oversubscribed and appointments to be delayed.

Whatsapp scam targets mothers national police in Spain have warned of a new nationwide Whatsapp scam aimed at mothers. the perpetrators pose as children of the victim and request an urgent money transfer: “Mum, this is my new number, my other mobile has broken and i need a favour.” the General directorate of the national police issued the warning on Monday after a number of reports from women all over Spain who had been defrauded. police said the string of messages begins by claiming the person (child) has lost their phone and are using a new number. police said, “this is how the first messages from these scammers appear, who also say they cannot receive calls so as not to be discovered.” the messages usually go on to say, “Can you make me a transfer to pay for something, i don’t
have the card at hand?” once the victim is convinced, her supposed child asks for an immediate transfer to a bank account. police said that once the women realise they have been scammed, usually after speaking to their actual children, there is no getting the money back since it is not possible to cancel the transfer. in recent weeks, national police have detected scams of this type across Spain. perpetrators have managed to defraud amounts ranging between 2,000 and 26,000 euros. in the event of receiving messages of this type, police recommend that you always make sure that a family member is on the other end of the mobile phone before making any payment.

Spain allows rationing SAMM still going strong Police seize crop dusting to prevent shortages Spanish supermarkets can legally ration consumer purchases of certain products under a new provision published in the state’s official bulletin. the text says the restrictions can be applied “exceptionally and when there are extraordinary circumstances or force majeure that justify it”. the move came as empty shelves appeared in many supermarkets due to the combined effect of the truck drivers’ strike and the Ukraine war. Most of the empty shelves have been due to an ongoing lorry drivers’ strike over soaring diesel prices, which began on 14th March and has curbed supplies of milk, flour, rice and other basic goods. three weeks ago, Spanish supermarkets began rationing the sale of sunflower oil to stop customers from stockpiling over shortage fears due to russia’s invasion of key supplier Ukraine. the text was introduced as part of the government’s emergency plan to address the economic impacts of the war. “it provides legal certainty so they can limit the number of articles purchased and thus avoid hoarding but mostly so that there is enough for all consumers,” reyes Maroto, minister for industry, commerce and tourism, told reporters. “We are also responding to a need that distribution companies have flagged to us which has become apparent due to the transport strike.” Spain has been struggling with a
drone
wave of social unrest over runaway inflation and rising prices, with lorry drivers striking, production stoppages and mass protests by farmers and fishermen. Soaring energy prices have also driven Spain’s inflation rate to a 37-year high, jumping to 9.8 percent in March up from 7.6 percent in February.
the Sailing association Mar Menor, SaMM, is still going strong after three difficult years as proved by the high attendance of over 40 members at the 2022 aGM held on March 9th. SaMM’s problems started in the autumn of 2019 when the devastating Gota Fria that hit los alcazares resulted in the pollution of the Mar Menor and a ban on water sports. this was followed by the imposition of the lockdown and travel restrictions of the Covid outbreak in March 2020 which continued into 2021. although pleasure sailing resumed, the Sunday race program was curtailed by the closure of the jetty at Ctd for repairs, although some limited racing did restart late in 2021. the aGM was the first that could
be held since 2019. George noden the Commodore since 2019 stood down and dawn Morgan was elected as his successor. dawn has only been a SaMM member for about a year but was the Vice Commodore of a sailing club in West Sussex before moving to Spain and is highly experienced. the Secretary david hardwick also stood down and Mike phillips was elected. there were only two proposals, the first to allow the Whaly support boat to be used for pleasure purposes and it was agreed to set up a small group to investigate the pros and cons and the second to try to forge stronger links with other groups. Many members attended a lunch after the meeting at the tataki restaurant.
local police in orihuela have seized a drone that was fumigating crops with non-permitted phytosanitary products and also lacking the permits necessary to fly a drone in the Valencian community, namely the aircraft documentation and pilot qualifications. the drone is believed to have been spraying just 200 metres from the city centre, next to the Segura river. the aerial Media Unit (UMao) of the local police, which has just recently been established, received information about some work being carried out without the relevant permits. ordinary service police officers had noticed the presence of an aircraft flying over and fumigating a large area of cultivated land, located next to the CV-9220 and the Segura riverbed. once the pilot of the drone was located, officers approached him and requested the authorizations required for the activity he was carrying out as well as the documentation of the drone itself and the qualification of the pilot to allow him to operate it. however, he did not show any documentation nor could he prove the ownership of the aircraft or the contracting of the relevant civil liability insurance. he also could not show that he had the approval of the Ministry for the aerial application of phytosanitary products. For this reason, the device was seized and brought to orihuela local police hQ.

Personal data stolen from 1.3m Iberdrola customers
the iberdrola group suffered a cyberattack last week that exposed the personal data of 1.3 million customers. Fortunately, the computer breach was closed within a few hours. iberdrola explained that the attack took place on the 15th of March and affected 1.3 million users, but that it was resolved the same day. “they only had access to name, surname and id. they did not have access to bank, tax or electricity consumption data,” claimed the spokesman. “they did not have access to critical data.” the following day, once the breach was closed, the company was able to stop a further potentially huge hack and it failed to breach the system. the group chaired by ignacio Galán said that the attacks occurred at the time that other similar crimes were recorded in Spain.

International Day Parade Orihuela Costa gets beacha new parade has been announced, to take place in orihuela Costa, hot on the heels of the recently rained off St patrick’s day parade. a group of businesses in Cabo roig, orihuela Costa, began running the St patrick’s day parades in 2011. each year the size and popularity increased until in 2019 around 20,000 spectators attended, and all dressed in all types of greenery with their faces painted and full of good humour. it certainly was a sight to behold and the parade received international acclaim and recognition. Unfortunately, CoVid put paid to the 2020 parade just two days before it took place and the committee knew for months
that the 2021 parade would also be scuppered. therefore the team put all its focus into the parade for 17th March 2022. however, all the planning in the world couldn’t have foreseen the appalling weather forecast for that day, and once again the committee regrettably had to cancel this year’s extravaganza, just two days before the event. luckily, due to the prior preparation, the bars and restaurants on Cabo roig Strip were 100 percent ready for a day of fun, but there was no parade. however, after consultation with orihuela town hall the show will go on, as the committee have agreed to support international day (11th May) with a weekend parade and fun day on Saturday
7th May at 4pm. the local parade committee would like to invite all international groups, of all nationalities to join and support the local expat communities on that day. registration can be made by email to: paddysdayspain@gmail.com before Good Friday, 15th april. this parade promises to be the biggest and most spectacular event ever staged in Cabo roig... and the organiser are fairly confident that the weather will be kind. after more than two years of seclusion and restrictions they believe that local residents all deserve a funfilled few hours to lighten minds and brighten hearts.
ready for Easter the department of Street Cleaning has started to prepare the beaches of orihuela for easter tourists. the work began with the collection of the seaweed posidonia oceanica, which is allowed to collect through the winter in order to protect the delicate sea and shoreline environment. the washed up plants have been collected by a contracted specialist and taken to the treatment plant. Work has begun across all of the different beaches along the coast, with special attention paid to la Caleta beach in Cabo roig, as it has been the one that has been most adversely affected by the release of algae and debris after the recent storm. the seaweed is collected by a backhoe machine and then transported by Centauro truck to a dryer. once dried it is then transferred to the treatment plant. the Councillor for Street Cleaning, dámaso aparicio, explained that “the work has begun after the recent storm and coinciding with the end of the winter period in which the remains of the posidonia have been regenerating our excellent sandbanks. the aim for this council is that the beaches will be free of posidonia in the run up to holy Week”. the removal of remains of the seaweed is not carried out
over the winter to safeguard the regression of the beaches and reduce the loss of sand. the remains are left to set and hold the sand. the stacking of the algae for drying is an activity authorised and recommended by the General directorate of Coasts to avoid excessive loss of sand. the posidonia oceanica meadows, an endemic species of the shallow waters of the Mediterranean Sea, are synonymous with good quality water, well oxygenated and free of contamination.
“now after the recent storm we begin to withdraw and manage it,” said the Councillor. in parallel, work is being carried out to remove the sand accumulated during Storm Celia and the subsequent storms that have affected the orihuela beaches and its promenades. When this work is finished, the promenades will be washed down and the beach sand sifted in order to guarantee that the beaches and promenades are in the best condition for easter, which is usually regarded as the start of the tourist season.
Medieval Craft Market in Alcalá del Júcar at Easter if you haven’t made plans yet for the coming easter weekend (14th - 17th of april), it might be a good idea to visit alcalá del Júcar. all weekend you can walk through a delightful medieval market, with real artisans working at their craft, and also enjoy the wide range of activities and stunning sights that this charming village has to offer. Visiting the castle, museums or caves, taking a walk along the river Júcar with its nice sandy beach, riding horseback and climbing mountains are just a few of the many possibilities. also there are some really nice restaurants with authentic Spanish food, and plenty of B&B’s and hotels - this is the real Spain. the village is built against a mountain side with a castle on top and at the bottom an historical roman bridge crossing the river. next to this bridge you will find the square with authentic craft stalls in medieval style, where a nice selection of artisans will be working and selling their products directly to the public. there will be crafts people with different specialities such as ceramics, hand painted t-shirts, wood carvings, puppetry, toys and also jewellery in silver, glass, macramé and much more. You can watch several participants working at their craft or get an original drawing
from a cartoonist as a nice souvenir. the children can enjoy a show with giant soap bubbles, play traditional board games or make their own artwork in one of the workshops. there is nice medieval back ground music, you can find a dancing bear (not a real one!), a stilt walker and other medieval characters and to top it all off, enjoy a fire show at night. the organisation of this market will be in the experienced hands of the craft association amata, who guarantees that everything on the stalls will have been made by the person at the stall. this association aims to
promote original crafts and art, and through these events offer a place in which the craftsmen and women can sell their work. the market will be open from 5 pm on thursday 14 april; opening times on Friday 15, Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 april are from 11am until 2pm and from 5pm till 10pm. For more information you can call 639 979 678 (english spoken). Police arrest a young man armed with an axe at petrol station a 29-year-old man was arrested on Sunday in alicante by national police after being involved in an incident at a petrol station in which he is accused of brandishing a large axe with a fifteen-centimetre blade. about a dozen police officers tried unsuccessfully to subdue the man and eventually, he threw the axe at one of the police officers, who was forced to throw himself to the ground to avoid being hit. the incident occurred shortly after eight in the evening on Sunday. the 091 emergency room was alerted to the presence of a man wielding an axe at a petrol station on pintor Gastón Castelló avenue. Several patrols and plainclothes officers immediately went to the scene and found a very upset young
man. For several minutes they tried to calm him down, but in a
video recorded by a neighbour in the area it can be seen that the young man was acting aggressively to the point of being crazed. in the end, the young man threw the axe at one of the policemen who, if he had not reacted so quickly and jumped to the ground, witnesses claim the axe would have hit him straight on. that moment was used by the rest of the police officers to pounce on the man and detain him with caution, since it was believed that he might also have a knife. the 29-year-old Spanish national could now be charged attempted murder of a police officer. it has not yet transpired if the detainee suffers from any mental health issue that might explain Sunday’s events. an investigation is underway.

Orihuela and Torrevieja More Taxis for summer in Orihuela Costa are top polluters twenty-two municipalities in the Valencian Community are responsible for more than 50 percent of the total greenhouse gas emissions in the entire region, while the most polluting sectors are transport and energy. in alicante, 9 municipalities (6 percent) are responsible for more than 50 percent of emissions, including alicante, elche, torrevieja, orihuela, Benidorm and San Vicent del raspeig, in this case due to the increased use of private cars and the private sector, as well as residential homes which attract tourism. these are the main conclusions of the inventory of Greenhouse Gas emissions of the Municipalities of the Valencian Community presented this week by the Minister for ecological transition, Mireia Mollà. She explained that “it is not a question of criminalising sectors or municipalities” but of knowing the reality so that “agile and courageous” decisions can be made that allow meeting the objectives set to reduce polluting emissions by 40 percent in 2030 and the neutralisation climate in 2050, aligned with national and european policies. the Minister pointed out that a map has been created which
shows which productive sectors “should concentrate the effort to make an efficient ecological transition, w i t h o u t forgetting the individual and collective social part, such as private transport”, which appears as one of the main sectors responsible for emissions. in this way, a municipality can develop a “more direct” mobility policy to mitigate climate change, while the part of the productive sectors will correspond to the regional, national and european governments. these indicators are presented within the scope of the Climate Change and transition law, which “creates the tax figures of green fiscal policy and a finalist fund for environmental policies, where our objective is to serve for payments for environmental services”. the senior technician of the University institute of information and Communication technologies, edgar lorenzo, explained the
model. he highlighted that the Valencian Community is “the first to have a high-resolution emission inventory of municipal magnitude”. the model used calculates 163 indicators in 541 municipalities to indicate the “focuses of emission of priority action to obtain a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions”. Specifically, gross emissions in the Valencian Community in 2019 accounted for 29.3 million tons of Co2 equivalent, mainly due to energy production and transport, while the forest area is capable of fixing 6 million tons. in this way, net emissions in the regional sphere are 23.3 million tons of Co2 equivalent emitted into the atmosphere, 4.69 per inhabitant. Mollá has clarified that although the data is from 2019 they are “more real” because the data from 2020 and 2021, in the midst of a pandemic, “are not reliable”.
orihuela City Council has authorised fifteen new taxi licences for the coast. the move comes after pressure from the local community on the lack of private hire cars in the area. the Councillor for Urban transport, Jose Galiano, has confirmed two of the licenses are specifically related to taxis for the beaches front areas and at least five of the vehicles must be adapted to carry passengers
with reduced mobility. he said:”We are expanding the current number of licenses within a sector that requires additional resources to respond to the demand throughout the municipality of orihuela, especially during the summer months when the population multiplies considerably.” orihuela Costa includes the tourist hotspots of la Zenia, Villamartin, Cabo roig and playa
Flamenca, which are home to large expat communities all year round, but treble in population over the summer months. anyone interested in the cab license concession will have a period of 20 calendar days to apply, from the date of publication in the official Gazette of the province of alicante. applications should be made to orihuela town hall.
Record rainfall the local area has seen record rainfall in March with 18 days of rainfall and more than 200 litres per square meter. the month of March 2022 has logged several weather records. in total there have been 18 days of perceptible rain (more than 0.1 litres per square meter), a figure that has exceeded the previous record of 16 days of rain, which was recorded in the month of december 1943. in addition, the 200 litres per square meter accumulated have been exceeded in some areas of the municipality of torrevieja. this is the case of the rain gauge that proyecto Mastral has in the lagunas de la Mata and torrevieja natural park. in
these areas a total of 204.6 litres per square meter have been collected in March alone. this is ten times the average amount of rain that usually falls in March. in other areas of the municipality, the records have ranged between 130 and 180 litres per square meter, which are also record amounts for the month of March since 1927. however, March has been a month not only marked by the rains, but also by the significant dust cloud seen in the middle of the month that left spectacular images with the sky turned completely orange and poor air quality – followed by hours of ‘dirty rain’ leaving everything covered in a layered of mud.
in terms of temperatures, March has been a slightly colder month than usual with an average temperature of 13.9ºC. the month of april has had cool but stable start, with sunny weather and a drop in temperatures that will continue during the first days of the month along with more cloud, rain and strong winds.

Did you take pension or investment advice since moving to Spain? By Sam Kelly dippFS, eFa, Ba (hons) Managing Partner Chorus Financial i’m sure many of you reading this will already be aware of Chorus Financial, and the essential message we have been spreading across the British communities of Spain over the last few years. From the day we opened, we have campaigned for transparency in the investment, pension and financial planning industry here in Spain – we are very proud that those campaigns have won us international awards. For too many years iFa’s have targeted our communities with so-called ‘solutions’ loaded with layer upon layer of hidden fees, inappropriate risk, and unnecessary product tie-ins. Brits have been encouraged to ‘transfer your pensions overseas!’ for apparent tax benefits that in many cases
don’t exist. You’ve been tied into investment plans and unwittingly paying 2, 3 even 4 times more than you realise, and have no doubt been left scratching your heads over how you haven’t seen better returns over so many years of strong markets. We’ve even seen an alarming trend of clients being encouraged to take their pensions as ‘annuities’ for apparent tax benefits. these solutions are now resulting in Brits in our area being investigated by the Spanish authorities. While Chorus Financial have already helped hundreds of clients on the Costa Blanca avoid such practises, we are now upping our efforts to educate those living in your area, to help ensure you do not
become yet another victim.
have no idea such fees apply.
all too often these recommendations are made because the iFa is getting paid by all parties – so you agreed to pay them an initial or annual fee, but beyond that, an insurance company, or ‘bond provider’ (for example Spanish Compliant Bonds) have paid them up to 8% initial commission – that is facilitated by locking you into these products for up to 10 years, where you could be paying 4 times more than you need to. then lastly the fund managers pay them. So rather than an iFa going into the open market and carefully selecting high quality, low-cost funds, clients are finding themselves shoe-horned into particular funds that pay commission to the adviser. Such funds can add as much as 3% per year in charges, and often the clients
at Chorus we make a simple promise:we are only ever paid by one party – our clients. and you only pay us specific fees we have clearly explained to you, in both monetary and percentage amounts. that means that when we select products you pay the lowest price available, and when we select funds, we do so with fees and quality at the forefront of that advice. if you have concerns over existing investments or pensions, or are considering a new solution, speak to a Chorus Financial adviser today. an initial consultation is free and without pressure or obligation. Call +34 965 641 163, email info@chorusfinancial.es or visit www.chorusfinancial.es for more information.
Investment contracts are intended as medium to long term investments, and all investments have some level of risk. Figures in our articles are examples of what can be achieved and cannot be guaranteed; the value of your investments can go down as well as up. Fees and charges can vary and will be fully explained to you before any advice can take place. GBP / EUR UPdatE GBP the pound has had a fairly quiet and mostly rangebound week – so far. apart from Q4 Gdp data, the market has had to lavish on a data feast consisting mainly of breadcrumbs, so it is perhaps no surprise that ranges amongst the major pairs involving the pound have been fairly constrained. on that Gdp data, Q4 2021 registered a 1.3% gain, comfortably beating the 1% estimate. despite those three Boe interest rate hikes, UK house prices continue to surge higher, with the nationwide Building Society survey for March reflecting a 14.3% YoY gain. Clearly at some point the acceleration in prices may start to diminish as those rate hikes start to wash through, but for now at least, the housing market remains buoyant. this resilience may be partially explained by the fact that the ratio of UK home-owners locking in their mortgages at lower rates for longer time, has increased substantially since the last notable slowdown. nearly 75% of outstanding UK mortgages are with fixed rates. despite this more favourable housing market backdrop, Boe governor, andrew Baily, gave a rather restrained speech at the start of the week, which follows in-line with that last rather dovish hike by the Boe. they do not look to be getting carried away with any perceived resilience in the economy, and you have to admire their caution given the alarming amount of potential dark clouds on the horizon. Back to that pound, and GBp/USd looks comfortable above 1.3000, and giddy anyplace near 1.3300 for the moment,
although today’s U.S March labor report (see USd) has the potential to force a break-out. EURO the single currency has had a great week really. Markets have been boosted by the prospect that russia and Ukraine might be moving forward with their peace talks. as we have observed throughout, markets have used the single currency as its preferred transmission mechanism for reflecting the current situation in Ukraine, so it is no surprise that the single currency has rallied, alongside broader risk proxies, as the hope of peace escalates. Furthermore, inflation data has played its part here too, with German inflation at a 40 year high, and Spanish inflation knocking on the door of 10%. the cries for the eCB to stop Qe and raise rates are getting louder. on the Qe part, the eCB have suggested that they might be in a position to stop asset purchases in the summer, and therefore, a rate hike ‘could’ come as soon as the following month. Given those high rates of inflation, the eCB need to start the process soon, or risk a nasty-looking backdrop of a potentially weakening economy and no place to go on rates. as for the eUr, well the single currency has been boosted by everything above really, except perhaps the last part. eUr/USd has moved from a 1.0800 low (on Monday) to a 1.1200 high during this week. Whilst dollar weakness has played its part here, GBp/eUr has declined from 1.2200 to under 1.1800 at one point, which reflects that broader-based eUr strength.

Inflation at 37 year high inflation in Spain is estimated to have reached a 37 year high last month. initial figures for March indicate inflation rose to almost 10% over the last year as prices rocket across Spain and the world. according to a flash estimate of the Consumer price index (Cpi) issued by the national Statistics institute (ine), annual inflation for March 2022 is 9.8%. according to the ine, the interim figure is an increase over the 7.6% annual inflation
rate reported for February. the statistics institute is set to confirm rates on april 13th and once confirmed, this latest rise would be the highest since May 1985. Countries in the euro zone saw a record 5.8% increase in inflation in February. the US reported a 7.9% increase for the same month, the highest level since 1982. Underlying inflation, which does not include energy or food products, was up 3.4% in
Spain, its highest increase since September 2008. Spain’s prime Minister, pedro Sánchez, said last week in Congress that 73% of the current inflation is due to the disruptions to the energy and agriculture markets caused by the invasion of Ukraine by russia. in response to the inflation crisis, the Spanish government has approved a €6 billion state aid and loans plan, including discounts on fuel for all consumers.

Local schools to vote Dog rescued on change in hours from drain More than 200 primary schools in the Comunidad Valenciana are set to vote on whether to change lesson times for good into a more northern Europeanstyle day. At present, schools in most of Spain and in particular the eastcoast region comprising the provinces of Alicante, Valencia and Castellón operate from 9am to 5pm with a twohour lunch break from noon to 2pm, although in recent years, this has been dramatically overhauled. For parents who work standard office or retail hours, their own lunch breaks are typically between about 2pm and 5pm, meaning they are returning home to eat and relax just as their children are due back at school, and the kids come home for the evening just as the parents are going back to work for the afternoon shift which typically finishes around 8pm. As a result, parents and children pass like the proverbial ships in the night, not seeing each other between around 8 in the morning and 9 at night, and it is usually grandparents who have to collect the kids to take them home for lunch, drop them back afterwards and pick them up at the end of the day – unless the parents work from home and have flexible enough practices that they can stagger their breaks to
accommodate school hours. Spanish society continues to have a tradition of the main meal being eaten at lunchtime, partly because the workforce does not clock off at night until around 8pm, meaning a very long spell without a hot meal, for children in particular. To this end, parents who cannot collect their kids at lunchtime to take them home for a meal have to leave them at school to dine in the canteen – and, although the food offered
is generally high-quality, tasty and nutritious, it can prove expensive for families trying to watch their budget. In the past five years or so, nearly 45 percent of primary schools in the Comunidad Valenciana have moved to more northern European hours, from
approximately 9am to 2pm with a couple of short breaks, and those which have done so generally report higher performance, motivation and alertness among pupils. For parents who are not available in the afternoons to look after their children, most schools run free-ofcharge extra-curricular activities, ranging from remedial or reinforcement classes to ‘fun stuff’ such as music, art and sports, normally until around 5pm with fee-paying ‘extras’ continuing until around 6pm or 7pm.
Alicante Province leads the way The majority of those schools which now operate from approximately 9am to 2pm are in the province of Alicante – seven in 10 – whilst in the other two provinces, seven in 10 still run according to traditional timetables. Regional education authorities have now announced that the remaining 204 will be voting on Monday 11th April on whether or not to adopt the new timetable. A minimum of 55 percent have to vote in favour of changing the timetable for this to go ahead, and it will be permanent – at least for the foreseeable future unless and until regional education authorities decide to call another referendum.
A small dog has been rescued from the bottom of a drainage sewer in San Miguel de Salinas. It is not known how the dog ended up in the drain, but luckily the Local Police managed to successfully remove him from the small space into which he had either fallen or crawled into. The dog was heard barking by a neighbour who was out walking their dog in the area. According to the witness, her father tried to open the sewer, which was closed with a grill over the opening. However, the opening was heavy and
was also stuck in place, so he was unable to open it on his own. The man spotted a group of cyclists and asked for their help, but even they couldn’t move the heavy lid. Running out of ideas, the group notified the authorities. An officer slipped into the narrow access channel at the back and climbed down some stairs into the interior of the channel . The dog was a bit wet, but otherwise unhurt and very lucky to have been found and rescued. Once in the arms of the policeman, the officer slowly climbed out until
he could hand the dog to one of the cyclists. The police explained in a statement, that the animal “does not have a chip”. Therefore, they could not find its owner through the database. They asked for publicity to enable them to try and find the dogs owner and after posting on social media and word of mouth in the town, the owners did come forward to claim the dog. They thanked the police for their actions, although quite how the animal ended up in the drain still remains a mystery.

An avocado a week cuts heart disease risk It used to be an apple a day, keeps the doctor way. However, we are now being advised to eat an avocado a week to reap health benefits. Eating two or more servings of the fruit each week reduces the risk of heart disease by a fifth, according to a new study from the Journal of the American Heart Association (JAMA). Aside from being delicious, avocados also contain dietary fibre, healthy monounsaturated fats and other key vitamins and minerals, including magnesium and vitamins C, E, and K. Here are a few ways to get more avocado – without a slice of toast in sight. In a smoothie... Smoothie bowls may be less trendy now than they were five years ago, but they still remain a popular breakfast option, particularly in the spring and summer. Adding avocado to your blender will help you thicken your bowl, particularly if you also use frozen bananas. Mix blueberries, spinach and raspberries for a sweet and tangy start to the day. As guacamole... Guacamole has it’s roots in Central America. In Mexico, avocados grow in abundance, and the Aztecs were said to eat it combined with spices. If made simply and fresh
at home (by mashing up ripe avocadoes with garlic, lime, black pepper and chillies) guacamole with tortilla chips or crudités makes an excellent snack and is an easy way to get those vital vitamins in. In a sauce... Yep, a creamy pasta without the cream. Adding avocado to a blender with tasty ingredients like basil, chilli, lemon juice and black pepper, and combining until a creamy sauce will make an easy topping for your pasta of choice. Add a little bit of grated cheese and you have a quick and healthy midweek meal. In chocolate mousse... Yes, you read that right. Avocado makes a great substitute for eggs in a chocolate mousse –
which can make an indulgent pudding vegan. You can’t taste the avocado when it is paired with high cocoa dark chocolate and some of your favourite dairy-free milk. This dessert is a lush final course for a dinner party and can be made in under ten minutes, because it turns out that avocados and blenders go hand in hand. Bake them... These are a great alternative brunch to the usual avocado toast (delicious but becoming rather overdone). Take the stone out of your avocado, crack an egg in the hole, top with cheese or herbs and bake it. This will be delicious with a hollandaise sauce and some sourdough or a spicy tomato salsa.

Local Freemasons support DEBRA
Local Freemasons Lodges (Old Tower Number 49 and Caledonia Number 68) recently held a tea party event in Villamartin to raise funds for DEBRA, Piel de Mariposa, the butterfly children’s charity. Great fun was had by more than sixty brethren and their invited guests while helping a very worthy cause. Over nine hundred euros were raised which will be used to purchase a computer and camera so the nurses can photograph the wounds of the
children, to better allow them to make more accurate diagnoses in order to offer an even greater standard of care. The charity provides care for children with epidermolysis bullosa (EB) who suffer excruciatingly painful skin blisters which typically affect both hands and feet. Fat burning foods If you’re looking to get back in shape before summer, then adding some cardio, getting your steps in, and eating a healthy diet are crucial. Maximize your results with these fat-burning foods. Asparagus Grilled asparagus is great, not just for the taste, but also because asparagus contains fibre, folate, and vitamins A, C, and K. And that’s just the start! Asparagus also offers asparagine, an amino acid that helps the body store energy in muscle instead of fat, as well as fructooligosaccharides diuretics that encourage weight loss, according to studies. Avocado One medium avocado has about 15 grams of fat, but don’t let that number deter you. In addition to antioxidants, copper, magnesium, manganese, niacin, and riboflavin, avocados are full of healthy fats - the kind that helps your heart and may increase the rate at which body fat is burned. The highfiber content of avocados also keeps you full and reduces your appetite. Beans Besides being high in both fibre and protein, beans especially white and kidney beans - contain resistant starches, which can potentially
increase the amount of fat used for energy and prevent new fat cells from forming.
and promote muscle growth, if you’re looking for a real isolation transformation.
Chilli Peppers Chilli peppers contain a chemical compound called capsaicin, which, in addition to relieving chronic pain, may also speed up metabolism, improve digestion, and curb appetite. Capsaicin is an antioxidant, too!
Fish Some of the best sources of vitamin D are fish, including salmon, tuna, cod, herring, and sardines. That’s key because vitamin D intake has been linked to weight loss in recent studies. Fish are also a lean source of protein that is rich in beneficial omega-3 fatty acids.
Eggs Remember all the bad press eggs used to get? Especially the yolks; as it turns out, not only is there no longer an established link between cholesterol in foods and cholesterol levels in your body, but the yolks contain metabolism-boosting nutrients that may help reduce both body fat and bad cholesterol. Plus, they’re low in calories and high in protein, which will fill you up
Greek Yogurt Iodine promotes a healthy thyroid, and low iodine levels can lead to a decrease in metabolism. Greek yogurt is not only a solid source of iodine, but the texture and protein keep you full between meals. Digesting all that protein burns extra calories, so aim for a lowfat or low-sugar variety for maximum effectiveness.

8 simple steps to clean your pool after the ‘calima’ dust storm There’s no doubt that the recent ‘calima’ or dust storm left a lot of cleaning up in its wake. This week we spoke to the specialists at Simply Pools to find out how best to clean your swimming pool after the red rain. Below, is their expert advice. Have you tried vacuuming you pool but still have cloudy water after the storm? Now the weather is becoming more stable it’s a good time to get your pool in tip top shape. Here are some simple instructions to follow: 1. The first thing you need to do is go to any good pool/ hardware store and buy liquid flocculant. The flocculant is perfect for clarifying water and removing suspended particles, although it is only recommended to use while the usual filtering process isn’t able to clean the pool. 2. Before adding the liquid into the pool you will first need to turn off the pump. It’s also very important no one is in the pool either! 3. As a guideline for very cloudy water you will need to add between 1-2 litres per 100m3. It’s always a good idea to check the instructions on the bottle and follow the amounts given by the manufacuter. 4. You then put the pump onto
RECIRCULACION for a couple of hours to get it moving around. 5. Next you simply let the flocculant do its magic and leave it overnight or even a full day. 6. Once it’s all reached the bottom of the pool, it’s time to vacuum it out. The pump needs to be turned onto VACIADO so nothing passes through the filter. 7. Afterwards you will probably need to add a little more water into the pool again.
Then place your pump onto the normal filtration settings and check the PH and chlorine levels - it’s always important that they are both at the correct levels to ensure healthy swimming water 8. A backwash will help remove any of the substance from the system. It’s then swim ready, if you’re brave enough for a dip before summer! Zoe Holden
Crossing the line A notable part of being a foreign resident in Spain is that you have an opportunity to mix with people from a variety of backgrounds. Some are undeniably ‘shady’, those who have relocated to Spain to reinvent themselves. But sometimes, you come across a shining star – someone who has done something amazing in their ‘past life’. Such a person is Paddy Fay. If you met him, you’d be forgiven for thinking he was your average Irish 72 year old retiree, enjoying the Spanish sunshine, a good strong ‘americano’ coffee and the occasional pint of the black stuff at his favourite Irish bar. But get talking to him and you’ll find out that this is the man who revolutionised
Irish sprinting. An accomplished athlete in his own right, Paddy has had a colourful career ranging from child actor (playing Coade in the 1966 docudrama Insurrection about the 1916 rising) to teacher at what was then arguably Ireland’s toughest school in Sheriff Street, Dublin. Paddy went on to coach Ireland’s elite athletes, bringing teams to the Olympics as well as the World and European Championships. He continues to mentor coaches and often travels back to Ireland for ‘An evening with Paddy Fay’ talks which are incredibly popular with sportspeople and coaches alike, all keen to benefit from Paddy’s years of wisdom and experience.
Paddy bought a property in Torrevieja in the late 90s and spent many of the subsequent years bringing Irish champion athletes to the sports facilities here for warm weather training. Chatting to a friend, Ali Kelly from Galway, one evening a few years back, Paddy was recounting tales of his life – his experience as a ‘child slave’ in Connemara in the bleak but beautiful west of Ireland, his run ins with Irish Athletics officials and locking horns with the Irish Sports council. Ali suggested Paddy should write a book. “I didn’t really think any more of it at the time,” explained Paddy “but then when the covid hit I said to myself, I might just try that.” So, he did. Undaunted by the prospect of embarking on such a project with no experience, Paddy sought out help from experienced contacts who were able to help guide him through the process and bring the book to fruition. The book was almost ready to launch as planned at the Irish indoor athletics championships in February of this year but unavoidable delays meant the book wouldn’t be printed in time and instead two private launches took place – one at a school in Lusk Co Dublin where Paddy used to teach (and is very fondly remembered), and another at his former GAA club in Raheny - both of which had a huge turnout of ex pupils, colleagues and friends. Paddy revealed that he thinks some senior sporting officials were somewhat relieved that he didn’t get to launch his book at the indoors, for fear of what he might have said. As
Paddy himself explained, “How I have reacted to things that I saw as injustices changed the course of my life so often.” He doesn’t mince his words and if he isn’t happy about how something is being done – he says so. The national launch has now been postponed until June, but the book went down so well at the two private launches, Paddy might have to order more copies. Some of the early reviews reveal just what a good read Paddy’s book is. Gerry Carson said, “Just finished Paddy’s no holds barred reflection on his life to date. And what a life. Top class sprinter, innovative athletics coach, GAA and football mentor, Irish language coach, team manager. Add in leading teacher and mentor, not afraid to hold back in his tussles with Irish Athletics officials and officers, clashes with the Irish sports Council – it’s all that – and more. Well worth getting hold of a copy.” Tadhg Kenny said, “Incredible to think what you have achieved over a lifetime in teaching, athletics and football. I
cannot believe your recollection of all the happenings of your lifetime. You must have kept a great diary over the years. I am thrilled that you committed it all to print as otherwise all those achievements would have been forgotten.” Not only is the book a riveting read, it also features a treasure trove of Paddy’s photographs from years of working alongside Ireland’s greatest athletes. If you’d like a copy, email coachpaddyfay@gmail.com The very appropriately named “Crossing the line” is priced at €10, there will be a limited number of copies available for sale at the Irish Abbey, Calle Geranios, Torrevieja.

DNA medication matching a major breakthrough A new study has found that we are on the verge of a new era in medicine – DNA matching medication to individuals’ genetic code. The British Pharmacological Society and the Royal College of Physicians revealed that a genetic test can predict how well drugs work in your body. Some drugs are completely ineffective or, worryingly, can become deadly because of subtle differences in how
our bodies are made up. Medical experts in the UK revealed that the tests could be available on the NHS as early as next year. A test will identify if a particular medication will help or harm, based on a person’s DNA. The field of matching drugs to your DNA, known as pharmacogenomics, has grown phenomenally in recent years. Prof Mark Caulfield, the president-
elect of the British Pharmacological Society, said “99.5% of us have at least one change in our genome that, if we come across the wrong medicine, it will either not work or it will actually cause harm.” For example, more than five million people in the UK get no pain relief from codeine. Their genetic code does not contain the instructions for making the enzyme that breaks codeine down into
morphine and without it, the drug is useless. Another example is the antibiotic gentamicin - the genetic code of one in 500 people puts them at higher risk of losing their hearing if they take gentamicin. Pharmacogenomics is already used for some medicines. In the past, 5-7% of people would have a bad reaction to the HIV drug abacavir and some
died. Testing people’s DNA before prescribing the drug means the risk is now zero. Scientists have looked at the 100 most prescribed drugs in the UK. This latest report says the technology already exists to roll out genetic testing to guide the use of 40 of them. The genetic analysis would cost about £100 and could be done simply, using either a sample of blood or saliva.

I got divorced, not once but twice. My first marriage failed after 7 years, my second is now over. I have two wedding dresses which at the time, I loved. The first is a frilly puff cream cake style - fashionable at the time in the 80s; the second is more stylish and was worn at our wedding the in 2002. Both marriages failed. I find I was keeping the dresses only for sentimental reasons, but lately I have decided that they are just languishing in boxes. I have asked my nieces if they want them, but they have their own ideas, and I am not even sure if they plan to get married - youngsters don’t seem to be bothering these days.

What are probiotics?
Probiotics are made of good live bacteria and/or yeasts that naturally live in your body. We all have both good and bad bacteria in our bodies. If we get an infection, there are more bad bacteria, knocking our system out of balance. Good bacteria help eliminate extra bad bacteria, restoring the balance. Probioticsupplements are a way to add good bacteria to your body. Certain types of good bacteria can also: • Help your body digest food. • Keep bad bacteria from getting out of control and making you sick. • Create vitamins. • Help support the cells that line your gut to prevent bad bacteria that you may have consumed (through food or drinks) from entering your blood.

Tyres and the ITV
All vehicles will have to undergo the ITV inspection at some point. For cars that are more than ten years old, the revision is annual and if the vehicle is more than four years old, it will be done every two years. In this exam, the technicians test all technical conditions of the vehicle for its proper operation on the road. Checking the tyres forms a crucial part of that inspection, where most of the defects are considered serious, and can therefore prevent a pass during the ITV.
Tyre defects that prevent passing the ITV The first issue that the ITV technician will look at is that the tyres are approved and are compatible with the vehicle’s technical card. This document indicates the appropriate requirements for each vehicle as well as the models that are approved. On the same axle, all tires must be the same: same brand, model, dimensions, and type. Likewise, it is important that the load and speed index of the tires are equal to or greater than those of the homologation of our car, otherwise, the result of the ITV will be unfavourable. - Speed and load index: The first indicator refers to the maximum speed supported by the tyre, while the second is the weight limit that it is capable of supporting. The lowest value of any of the tyres included in the ITV card is taken as reference. - Measurements: Important factor to maintain the dynamics and driving of the car as it has been designed from the factory. For this reason, from the
ITV a maximum distortion of +/-3% is accepted in the measurements in the total diameter of the tyre. 1.6mm deep tread Technicians strictly monitor tyre tread wear. The grooves must have a minimum depth of 1.6 mm. If the wear is higher, the result of the ITV will be unfavourable and we will only be authorised to circulate to the workshop. A traffic officer can fine you if the tires have this defect. Visual tyre check In addition, other elements of the tyres will be checked visually to rule out deformations or breaks, that there are no exposed cables or that the rubber does not interfere with other parts of the vehicle. List of faults when passing the ITV - Tyre is without approval mark: serious defect. - Measurements, speed index or load does not coincide with those included in the vehicle type approval or with their equivalents: serious defect. - Different model tyres mounted on the same axle: serious defect. - Wrong mounting of the tyre: serious defect.
- Depth of the main tread grooves less than 1.6 mm: serious defect. - Unauthorised sculpting: serious defect. - Irregular and excessive wear on the tread: serious defect. - Defects in the condition of the tyre: blisters, abnormal deformations, breaks,...: serious defect. If there is danger of bursting, the defect is very serious. - Exposed cables, cracks or signs of breakage of the casing: very serious defect. - Incompatibility of the tyre with the rim: serious defect. - No maximum speed warning label: minor defect. - Interference of the tyre with other parts of the vehicle: serious defect. - The air pressure control system works incorrectly or does not work: minor defect. It is always a good idea to check your tyres regularly. Making sure they are properly inflated, show no signs of damage, and the tread depth is sufficient. Tyres are one of the main safety features of a vehicle, though they are often neglected. It is because of their importance that the ITV inspection pays such close attention to them.
Finding Fuel on the Motorway If you are making a long trip on a motorway and you do not want to deviate too much to refuel, it might help if you know some of the hidden secrets of the road signs. On a long trip, it is quite common to not want to go too far out of your way to refuel. In most cases, the filling station that is next to or very close to the motorway is often preferred. However, sometimes, because we may not know how to read and interpret traffic signs, we end up selecting a petrol station which is
surprisingly far away from the motorway. The distance indicated by the information signs is one of the main giveaways for drivers, but the colour is also an indicator. In the case of distance, if the indicative signs say that the petrol station is at 1,000 metres and then at 500 metres, this means that the filling station will be practically next to the motorway or on a parallel service road that will make you deviate very little. On the other hand, if the petrol station

identification signs are located 750 and 250 metres away, in these cases you will have to deviate from the motorway and, on certain occasions, even take a short tour of a section of a regional or national road. Likewise, the colours of the filling station or service station identification signs also constitute a fundamental trick. First of all, if these signs are blue, then the petrol station will be on the same side of the highway; secondly, if the signs are green, the service station will not be parallel to the motorway, although it will be a short distance through a small section of connection that will not make you deviate too much; and thirdly, if the signs are white, this filling station option would be the least interesting for you , because to get to the service station you will have totravel a few kilometres through a national, local, provincial or regional road. In addition to the colours and distances, another piece of information that you must take into account and that is usually indicated on these signs is the timetable in which the gas stations provide service. Be careful because there are a good number of these establishments that have restricted hours (from 6-7 am until 11 pm in many cases) and even on Sundays and holidays they may be closed. Of course, if your car is equipped with a GPS navigator with a service station/ petrol station locator, it will be helpful to consult it, unless its software has not been updated for a long time. Likewise, there are many apps for smartphones with petrol station locators and, in many cases, they also tell you the price and the ranking of the cheapest according to the route you are taking.

This was the first competition for our new sponsor Frutas ASPAS from Daya Nueva. We had to cancel our last game due to bad weather but although we knew bad weather was around again, we decided to go ahead and make the trip to Altorreal in Murcia. 18 players out of 22 managed to stay dry, unfortunately the last 4 players took the full brunt of the heavy downpour on the 18th, apart from that the day was overcast with a very pleasant 70 degrees. The format was full handicap Stableford split into two groups with a winner from each group, one being the overall winner. The winner of the Frutas ASPAS Cup, again following his last win, was Craig Justham from group A with a handicap cutting score of 45points, runner up in group A was “He’s on Fire“ Steve Burnswith 33 points and third place went to “Three Clubs” Sean McGuinness with 31 points. Winner from group B, after a three way count back all the way to the 18th hole for the second and third places, eventually went to “Ave A Go Golfer” Steve Day with 30 points,

TALEs FROM THE TOP FLIGHT n CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com
So, England got a bye to the last 16 of the World Cup – apparently. Being drawn against Iran, USA and one of Wales, Scotland or the Ukraine has English fans overly excited. Providing England don’t contrive to not win that group against a bunch of footballing minnows, they’ll probably play Senegal or the Netherlands in the knockouts and then probably France in the last eight. Quarter finals and out then! But before the football world turns yet another blind eye to anything that might get in the way of our precious World Cup taking place, we have the small matter of the Premier League run in (and, weirdly, the start of the next Premier League season too) to get out of the way. Liverpool finally clawed themselves back to the top, beating Watford 2-0 - but before lazy hacks were able to ask Jurgen ‘how it felt’ or state ‘that must be a big turning point’, City led at Burnley to guarantee they’d move a point ahead once again. Liverpool were in typical postinternational break form - good enough without setting the world alight. Diogo Jota, Exhibit C of Klopp’s recent world-class recruitment, scored a nice little header before VAR decided to go looking for some work to do and upsetting Uncle Roy. That said, there cannot be too many better back-up penalty takers in the league than Fabinho - one benefit of Salah not being on the pitch is seeing the Brazilian net once more from 18 yards. According to Peppy G, City didn’t discuss Liverpool once in their teamtalk and were purely focused on the fact they usually batter Burnley home or away. KDB scored nice and early, meaning the champions were able to control, stroll and save themselves for the midweek Champions League quarter finals. The top two head into next Sunday with a single point between them - so
let’s now sit back and wait for Sky to overhype it into a dull 0-0 draw. As for Burnley, they might have hoped their rather long grass might have made it tricky for City - having lost ten in a row against the Etihad boys, you can’t blame them for trying everything. They’ve got 10 games left to live up to the cliche ‘they know how to stay up’. If anyone had Brentford to beat Chelsea 4-1, I’ll give them the money myself - the odds would have been quite generous which would have matched Chelsea’s defending in the second half. Toni Rudiger must have still been wondering whether his wunderstrike had added another 100K a week to his wage demands next season as Brentford, led by the majestic Christian Eriksen, turned it around to score four and win this fixture for the first time since 1939. Mind you, Chelsea don’t really get on with this weekend - last season, they lost 5-2 to West Brom. Steven Gerrard says his team ‘never turned up’ against Wolves and that was down to him which does make me wonder what directions to Molineux he gave them. Wolves won 2-1, meaning Villa have lost every game Gerrard has taken charge of when playing a team above them in the table. The Coutinho honeymoon period also seems to be over - fun whilst it lasted.
Think what you want about Everton Football Club and Frank Lampard as a manager but the last thing you need when you are getting dragged into a relegation scrap is a touch as heavy that of Alex Iwobi. Iwobi’s inability to control the safest of passes in the Toffees’ midfield led to West Ham’s winner - not that was the only thing to go wrong for Lampard. Donny van de Beek pulling up lame in the warm up wasn’t a great start and skipper Michael Keane picking up two yellows wasn’t a great finish. West Ham, well they just keep marching on aiming to keep Man United out of the top six. That’s right - the top six. The top four went a few weeks ago, now
El Bosquet spring Festival 29th & 30th March 2022 We fished the above two-day festival at the El Bosquet complex at Crevillente. The weather leading up to this event has been atrocious with high winds and heavy rain and although the roads at the complex were fine the fishing did suffer somewhat. Day 1 The first day was fished in very light rain and moderate wind speeds. Winner on the day was Richard Smith drawn on the end peg he fished the pole long with maggots or bread for 17.50kg. In second place was Bill Cannon from peg
6. Bill fished the method feeder or the pole across for 11.98kg. In third place from the adjacent peg 5 was Paul Davis with 11.66kg. Other section winners were John Waples 3.94kg, Bill Wakenhall 10.56kg, Barry Homer 6.80kg and Alan Hill with 8.60kg. The pairs event was won by Bill Cannon and Alan Hill with 20.58kg. Day 2 The second day was fished in similar conditions and the fishing was just the same. Winner not only on the day but winner overall by a long margin, was
Richard Smith. Drawn on the unfancied peg 24 he fished the pole long with bread for a great weight of 21.78kg. In Second place was Nick Bastock drawn on peg 2 he fished the pole across with maggots for 14.86kg. In third place using similar tactics was Vinnie Smith with 12.60kg from peg 4. Other section winners were Bill Reade 8.46kg, Terry Brindley 3.98kg and Neil Bomford with 10.80kg. The pairs event was won by Nick Bastock and Neil Bomford with 25.66kg. Here are the full overall results
it’s a battle to be one of the best six sides in England for Ralf Rangnick’s disillusioned band of professionals. If it hadn’t been for Fred, De Gea and VAR then Old Trafford would have been witnessing another defeat instead, they just got to watch another disjointed, insipid and everythingother-than-what-Rangnick-said-he’ddeliver display. Ronaldo’s the problem, is he? Are we all very sure about that? James Maddison deserved his goal to stand, especially given he managed to avoid being properly injured by Scott McTominay’s ‘tackle’ and the fact that he was back to his mischievous best. Fred, to be fair, is one of the few players to have improved on the German’s watch. Tottenham have now scored more Premier League goals than everyone else in 2022. Just let that settle in for a moment - yes, Mr Ed. Your parting gift to United could have been just getting Conte in and being done with it, but no. You dithered once again. He might have been ‘too defensive’, right? Conte’s Spurs hammered Newcastle 5-1 and the craziest part of that headline is that Kane didn’t score. He did pretty much everything else, but Tottenham found the back of the net five times and their main man didn’t. That’ll have annoyed him, even if the win did move his side into the top four ahead of their local rivals. Down in Brighton, they are still looking for the ball that Neal Maupay dispatched from the penalty spot.
