Cabo Roig Market gets set for summer
The Orihuela City Council has officially announced the call for the management of the ‘flea market’ located
on Paseo Aguamarina and Calle Cielo, known as Cabo Roig Strip in Orihuela Costa. This significant contract
entails the organisation and administration of the bustling non-fixed market, renowned as a tourist attraction throughout the vibrant summer season. Commencing from 15th June and concluding on 30th September, the evening market will be open for trade from 7pm to 12am, encompassing 29 stalls within an expansive area measuring 190 square meters. Crucially, the market’s layout must adhere to designated dimensions without encroaching upon the existing terraces of the bars, restaurants and businesses that line the strip. These vibrant stalls offer an eclectic array of goods, ranging from jewellery to artisanal and craft treasures, and are required to maintain high standards of cleanliness and organisation. The overarching aim is to foster an environment of orderly and regulated trade, ensuring a harmonious coexistence between residents, tourists, and local businesses amid the summer festivities. The successful bidder will
assume responsibility for the selection, arrangement, and installation of stalls, as well as the allocation of spaces to vendors. Additional duties encompass fee collection, filling vacant positions, and provision of a dedicated portable toilet facility exclusively for merchants. Administrative tasks, including staffing and cleaning duties, also fall under the remit of the chosen contractor. An annual fee of at least 10,700 euros has been allocated, payable to the City Council by the successful
bidder. Initially spanning two years, with provision for extension up to an additional two years, the contract allows for a maximum concession period of four years. This fee structure has been carefully calculated, factoring in anticipated revenues of 39,150 euros generated by the 29 positions during the summer months, offset against estimated expenses totalling 21,317 euros. Expenditures include the employment of administrative and cleaning staff, installation and maintenance of sanitation facilities, and the provision of public liability insurance. The Councillor for Markets, Noelia Grao, emphasised the creation of this initiative follows previous experiences aimed at addressing what used to be a disorganised market presence, which occasionally posed inconveniences to pedestrians. Noting the area’s bustling ambiance, characterised by a plethora of bars and an influx of tourists. She underlined the importance of maintaining the equilibrium between market vendors and established businesses. With the official call for management bids now underway, anticipation mounts for the selection of a capable contractor tasked with overseeing this pivotal summer marketplace in Orihuela Costa.
