Welcome to Barbados Monthly Arts Events Magazine

Sixteen years of the publication

ALL ISSUES

https://issuu.com/corriescott

This is a completely free magazine created out of the need to inform so that we can get to exhibitions, artist talks, workshops and more, rather than hearing about events after they have taken place.

I encourage anyone with a visual arts event to get in contact with me at corriescott@gmail.com and I will add a free page for your exhibition, classes, workshops, talks etc.

Let’s get the arts out there!

Please, pass this magazine on to others and so help the creative side of Barbados get all the exposure possible.

Visualartsbarbadosevents

The Barbados Arts Events page was created to promote the Visual Arts Events in Barbados and artists whether exhibiting here in island or overseas.

The focus is on the events for the fine arts, encompassing art, photography, sculpture and installations, gallery receptions, exhibitions, talks, interviews, workshops, publications, studios, residencies.

I will also post visual art collaborations with writers, theatre, dance, videos, music and creatives but it has to encompass the visual arts/artists to be posted on this page.

I started this page because I felt that the visual arts were not getting much needed exposure to expose the talent in Barbados and around the world. I wish I could encompass all the creative arts as there is so much happening on this tiny wonderful island of ours but I am a one woman band doing this free. Over the years this page has become a support for all creative events in Barbados and I was happy for this but realised that it was diluting the fine arts section which it is meant to focus on.

I need to bring the focus back in these group pages to the visual arts.

Thank you for understanding.

‘LORE: Myth, Memory and the Caribbean Imagination’, an Interactive Exhibition by fine art Photographer and digital artist Risée Chaderton-Charles at the Sidney Martin Library, UWI

March 28th to April 26th

Monday - Saturday, 10am-6pm

MEET THE ARTIST Tuesday, March 31st, 6pm

Photographer and digital artist Risée Chaderton-Charles has created a volume of work examining the space that Caribbean myths occupy within in our collective subconscious. She has carefully and thoughtfully used her photographic eye and creativity to make real these stories and legends. “Lore” is the culmination of a practice that has been, for a decade, strongly rooted in the art of Caribbeanfocussed imagemaking and storytelling. This exhibition allows viewers the opportunity to not only examine a specially curated selection of her much larger collection but to also glimpse into her creative world via an interactive experience.

Stories, myths, and fairy tales have always been a part of rounding out our humanity. From the caves at Lascaux, which told tales of the hunt, to modern movies like Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners”, which tell the tales of our experience. Myths, stories, and fairy tales have occupied a venerated place in the human consciousness and telling and sharing them has always been the best part of our humanity.”

- Risée Chaderton-Charles*

The Barbados Photographic Society presents ‘BLACK & WHITE MOMENTS’

A fine art photography exhibition at Caribbean Brushstrokes Gallery

Opening night reception Sunday April 15th, 6.30pm - 8.30pm

Artist Talk: Wednesday 25th May, 2pm - 4pm Exhibition ends May 9th

This exhibition aims to showcase the remarkable talents of the members of the Barbados Photographic Society. We are confident that Black & White Moments will be a significant cultural event, drawing art enthusiasts and photographers alike.

Definition of Black & White Photography:

Black and white photography is a photographic style that captures images using shades of grey, ranging from black to white, rather than full colour. It emphasizes contrast, texture, lighting, and composition, often highlighting mood, emotion, and timeless qualities. This style is commonly used for artistic expression, documentary work, and historical photography, as it can evoke a sense of nostalgia or focus attention on form and content without the distraction of color.

Conclusion:

Black & White Moments promises to be an intriguing exhibition that highlights the versatility and artistic potential of black & white photography. We eagerly anticipate the participation of the talented members of the Barbados Photographic Society and look forward to showcasing their exceptional works at the Caribbean Brushstrokes Gallery in April 2026. For further information you can email us at thebarbadosphotograhicsociety@gmail.com

“Exhibitions are kind of ephemeral moments, sometimes magic moments, and when they're gone, they're gone.”

- Hans-Ulrich Obrist, Swiss art curator, critic, and art historian

It's exhibition time again and I am happy to announce that one of my pieces has been included in the Barbados Photographic Society's (BPS) "Black and White Moments". This year's edition was again curated by Ms. Giselle Walker and opened to the public on April 15, 2026. The selection process started back in December 2025 with a call for entries from all financial members of the Society. Final announcements were sent to the exhibitors in February 2026. My print "Saying No" was selected alongside the work of thirty-four (34) other Barbados-based photographers. As always, thanks go to my family members and friends who came out to support the exhibition. Special thanks to all the ones who pushed me when I needed it.

Opening night was quite the event, with over 200 art lovers coming to see the show. The night’s proceedings began with remarks from the gallery owner and the BPS President. The keynote speaker of the night, however, was renowned author Mrs. Denise Haynes, who delivered a most thoughtful address. Based on the feedback that I received that night, it seems like everyone enjoyed themselves, but more importantly, loved the displayed work and the discussions with the photographers about their craft.

As this exhibition proceeds, I wanted to offer a few basic tips for anyone who may want to join an exhibition or consider having one of their own. First, note that this is just a brief article on basic considerations. I am, in no way, an expert on the topic at hand. I always like to start with a definition. Oxford defines an exhibition as "a public display of works of art or items of interest, held in an art gallery or museum or at a trade fair". As such, there are many different kinds of exhibitions for photographers. These can include solo, group, museum, retrospective, and nowadays, virtual/online. Note that the categories can and will sometimes overlap.

Here are a few tips to consider when entering or curating your own exhibition (strictly my own observations and not an exhaustive list by any means):

1. You should have a clear grasp of the theme and message of the exhibition that you are trying to enter or put together.

2. If you are a part of a curated group exhibition, you may have a limited number of images to submit for consideration.

3. If this is your own solo effort and you have to curate, make sure that you set a strict, core idea. Ask yourself if each image serves the theme or narrative that you're building, or if it should really a standalone image.

4. Themes can be either conceptual or visual, or a combination of both. Try to aim for some visual consistency in your topic, e.g. lighting, colour/black and white treatment, mood, etc..

5. Image selection is a key process. Give yourself self sufficient time before your submission deadline to consider all potential entries and get feedback from trusted and unbiased persons.

6. Avoid too much explanation in your caption. If you need too many words, your work may not be as cohesive as you think.

7. Determine the narrative flow as either telling a story or a fragmented collection.

8. Once you have your exhibition planned out, be sure to reach out and make relationships with galleries, museums and vendors like printers and framers. Some vendors may offer discounts to creatives. https://www.nickyhighlanderphoto.com/blog/2026/4/19/exhibition-black-and-white-moments-2026

Nicky Highlander is the nickname and photographic "alter ego" of Barbadian photographer, Nicole Phillips. Having developed a great appreciation for sharing her culture and fun moments while studying and travelling abroad, she tends to frame her work in the form of photo essays documenting the present times. She considers herself to be "a visual storyteller", using photographs as a medium to replace text and sound. She is a 4-time Barbados NIFCA Bronze medal award winner. She was awarded 2 Honorable Mentions in the 2015 Neutral Density Awards and 1 Honorable Mention in the 2015 International Photographer of the Year (IPOTY) Awards. She has also participated in both physical and online exhibitions in Barbados and Los Angeles.

When she can't be found photographing her environs, working in the financial industry, spending time with friends and family, playing with adorable pets or indulging her interests in geek culture, she is a contributor to the Barbados Photographic Society's web and Facebook pages. She is currently working on her first photo book.

Artist Statement

The people around me and the world at large both inspire and fascinate me, and I am continuously learning from them. My foremost aim is to represent my subjects and my connection to them honestly. That honesty extends beyond the mere photo and encompasses the emotional aspect. To quote the great Ansel Adams, I believe that “a great photograph is one that fully expresses what one feels, in the deepest sense, about what is being photographed”.

I shoot Portraiture, Pets, Nature and Wildlife, Human Interest, etc. I don't believe in limiting myself to one or a few options; I try to go out of my comfort zone. That is not to say that I don't have my favourites or personal projects. I believe in creating the best possible images, no matter the subject or method. I'm having fun with it, and I hope you will join me on my creative journey.

“There is a moment when looking becomes seeing.

When the body in front of you is no longer just form, but rhythm, weight, breath. This is a space for that moment.

We gather inside Union to draw from lifenot to perfect, but to witness.

To let the hand move as the eye learns to slow down.

To sit with line, shadow, proportion, and the quiet conversation between them. A live model in the nude holds the centre. Around them, we practice attention. Whether you are returning to drawing or arriving for the first time, you are welcome here.

No performance. No expectation. Just presence. Move, observe, sketch as you feel Bring what you need, or borrow what you can.

Stay for a moment or for the full unfolding. Come as you are.

Leave having seen a little more.”

Am I a Bad Girl, Nanny? Cries of Innocence and of Experience

February 27th - October 3rd at the Barbados Museum & Historical Society.

“The BMHS is pleased to announce the exhibition Am I a Bad Girl, Nanny? Cries of Innocence and of Experience!

In this new body of work, internationally recognised Barbadian artist Joscelyn Gardner engages with two ambrotypes in the museum’s historic photograph collection as sites of fragments, silences, and ethical tension. Through lithography, embroidery, and layered material processes, she imagines a visual world seen through the eyes of Eva Douglas Richards, the child in the care of Harriet Thomas Weekes, depicted in a rare shared portrait from the 1850s. This exhibition invites us to reflect on the complexities of colonial legacies shaped by care, power, and intimacy.”

Harriet Thomas Weekes: The Right to Opacity at The Barbados Museum & Historical Society.

Feb 27th - Oct 3rd.

“Announcing the exhibition Harriet Thomas Weekes: The Right to Opacity, which engages two rare photographic records of a Black Barbadian woman who lived from enslavement into legal freedom (1815–1897).

Rather than seeking to tell her story in full, this exhibition embraces what cannot be fully known, honouring Harriet without reducing her to the limits of the colonial archive.

Through photographs, documents, and community voices, visitors are invited into a space of listening, reflection, and shared meaning-making, where presence matters more than completeness.”

On behalf of the Executive and members of the Barbados Photographic Society, we extend our deepest condolences to Russell and the entire family on the passing of Bernard Pooler. Bernard, along with his son Russell, were valued and cherished members of the Society, and their presence and contributions to our community have meant a great deal. His passing is a profound loss, and he will be remembered with respect, warmth, and gratitude.

In this time of sorrow, may you find comfort in the memories shared and strength in the support of those around you.

May his soul rest in peace.

How It Happened

I have, for so many years, wanted to create a free online reference book where anyone, in any part of the world, may access the creative people in Barbados. I could not do this on my own and Kathy Yearwood heard of my idea, offered to partner with me and I happily agreed.

What started out in March as a small book of what I thought might be a maximum of one hundred and fifty pages turned into a tome of over three hundred pages. A mixture of excitement and fear at what we had taken on. And here we are in December 2011 with a book showing off the talents in Barbados. So exciting.

The eight month adventure began. Finding artists, photographing them and their work. From March 2011 to October 2011 Kathy and I collated the artwork, the bios and statements and travelled around the island garnering images and information.

Large collections of artwork in homes. Convincing people who thought they were too old and forgotten and watching them smile as their work was photographed and having them talk about themselves so that we could create a bio for them. Literally slipping down the hills of clay at Chalky Mount to see an original kiln and spend the day with the potters. Temple Yard with the Rastafarian community where they are blessed with talent, especially carving, and then coming away with gifts of pineapples and avocados. Photographing in the rain with an umbrella in one hand and a camera in the other to get the right angles. Going to openings and craft shows and talking to many. Coming to my home, going to Kathy’s, and going wherever was needed. Meeting the different personalities in so many locations as I photographed many of them for their portrait photo for the book. Remembering some who have left us. A labour of love, learning and fun.

The thank you part as I could not have done this on my own. Norma Springer who encouraged me to “take the book and run with it”. Kathy Yearwood who offered to partner with me collating and to create the book for artists in Barbados. Alison Chapman-Andrews for helping Kathy and I proof read. Amazing how much you miss no matter how many times we went over it. Sue Bain for offering her professional opinion and suggestions as a copy editor. Peter Boos for all the encouragement. Laura Lin Hutchinson for her introduction. Finally, the most important people, the creative souls who put their trust in Kathy and I to show them off to their best. I hope we have done this.

“Hi! Welcome To Antillean Gallery of Art!

My name is Jeena Chatrani and I recently started Antillean Gallery with the intention of promoting and selling art from Caribbean artists online.

I'm an artist myself and I've found that the art scene in Barbados could greatly benefit from some online presence. For the last 6 years I've been a full time artist and have had to learn a lot about the business behind selling art. It's not easy to make it as an artist but it is so fulfilling.

With Antillean Gallery of Art I hope to help raise the standard of art and artists in Barbados, and eventually across the Caribbean.”

The artists of Antillean Gallery of Art online gallery:

Catherine Forter Chee a Tow, Cathy Cummins, Chris Richards, Dana Sikkens, Jeena Chatrani, Julia Seymour, Julianne Gill, Lorna Wilson, Mario Holder, Maurice Forde, Sian Pampellonne, Tracey Williams, Trevor Desilvia Curator Jeena Chatrani

Helping the young talent where we can.

This pandemic has created financial difficulties for so many in the arts and they lose any chance to make a career of art.

I just received a donation of art supplies being kindly given by artist Jeena Chatrani, curator of Antillean Gallery of Art online gallery. Thank you Jeena.

These will go to a very talented 17 year old to help her keep drawing and painting.

Would you consider looking around your painting/studio space and see if there are any art supplies that you may not want or need and help the future talents of Barbados.

Either give directly to artists whom you feel may need the help or contact me via private message here and drop off the arts supplies and I will happily disburse them to those in need.

Please be aware of the dignity and pride of those receiving.

Please don’t add their names here. Private message me.

Allow them to decide if they want their names added to art supplies being given to them.

Thank you

Art supplies kindly donated to go to a young aspiring artist in need. Thank you Heidi Berger.

Our Mission

To fuel the development of culture through training, research and the creation of opportunities in cultural industries.

The Role of the NCF

The NCF’s two major roles are: developmental and commercial. In its developmental role, the Foundation uses culture as a tool for national development fostering and supporting the various art forms and new cultural products. In its commercial role, the Foundation is responsible for the promotion, production and hosting of cultural festivals and associated events that are considered economically viable or socially acceptable. A key part of this function now includes the responsibility for the staging and execution of major governmental and national events. In addition, as culture becomes more pivotal to national and international policy, the National Cultural Foundation continues to re-assess its responsibilities in light of all its functions.

FUNCTIONS

of the NCF are:

To stimulate and facilitate the development of culture generally

To develop, maintain and manage theatres and other cultural facilities and equipment provided by Government

To organize cultural festivals

Assist persons interested in developing cultural expression.

OBJECTIVES of the NCF are:

To provide opportunities for Barbadian artists/artistes to showcase their talents with the end result being an increased demand for local work

To educate Barbadians concerning their heritage

To offer Barbadians and visitors alike a high quality product that informs, educates and entertains

To equip our cultural workforce with technological skills and training to excel in their particular art forms

To strengthen the local cultural product and in the process increase profits to the shareholders

To create high quality products that will be competitive on the local, regional and international markets

To maximize the role of the cultural sector in the tourism industry

“Somewhere, amid the darkness, a painter measures a blank canvas, a poet tests a line aloud, a songwriter brings a melody into tune. Art inspires, provokes thought, reflects beauty and pain. I seek it out even more in these times. And in so doing, I find hope in the human spirit.”
