https://issuu.com/corriescott
This is a completely free magazine created out of the need to inform so that we can get to exhibitions, artist talks, workshops and more, rather than hearing about events after they have taken place.
I encourage anyone with a visual arts event to get in contact with me at corriescott@gmail.com and I will add a free page for your exhibition, classes, workshops, talks etc.
Let’s get the arts out there!
Please, pass this magazine on to others and so help the creative side of Barbados get all the exposure possible.

The Barbados Arts Events page was created to promote the Visual Arts Events in Barbados and artists whether exhibiting here in island or overseas.
The focus is on the events for the fine arts, encompassing art, photography, sculpture and installations, gallery receptions, exhibitions, talks, interviews, workshops, publications, studios, residencies.
I will also post visual art collaborations with writers, theatre, dance, videos, music and creatives but it has to encompass the visual arts/artists to be posted on this page.
I started this page because I felt that the visual arts were not getting much needed exposure to expose the talent in Barbados and around the world. I wish I could encompass all the creative arts as there is so much happening on this tiny wonderful island of ours but I am a one woman band doing this free. Over the years this page has become a support for all creative events in Barbados and I was happy for this but realised that it was diluting the fine arts section which it is meant to focus on.
I need to bring the focus back in these group pages to the visual arts.
Thank you for understanding.

‘LORE: Myth, Memory and the Caribbean Imagination’, an Interactive Exhibition by fine art Photographer and digital artist Risée Chaderton-Charles at the Sidney Martin Library, UWI
March 28th to April 26th
Monday - Saturday, 10am-6pm
MEET THE ARTIST Tuesday, March 31st, 6pm
Photographer and digital artist Risée Chaderton-Charles has created a volume of work examining the space that Caribbean myths occupy within in our collective subconscious. She has carefully and thoughtfully used her photographic eye and creativity to make real these stories and legends. “Lore” is the culmination of a practice that has been, for a decade, strongly rooted in the art of Caribbeanfocussed imagemaking and storytelling. This exhibition allows viewers the opportunity to not only examine a specially curated selection of her much larger collection but to also glimpse into her creative world via an interactive experience.
Stories, myths, and fairy tales have always been a part of rounding out our humanity. From the caves at Lascaux, which told tales of the hunt, to modern movies like Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners”, which tell the tales of our experience. Myths, stories, and fairy tales have occupied a venerated place in the human consciousness and telling and sharing them has always been the best part of our humanity.”
- Risée Chaderton-Charles*

Exhibition March 11th - April 3rd.
“Something powerful is about to rise under the galvanize roof at Caribbean Brushstrokes — and you do not want to miss this.
‘Reimagined II: Under the Galvanized Roof’ brings together three fearless Barbadian women — Akilah Watts, Alanis Forde, and Anna Gibson — in an exhibition that pulses with identity, memory, vulnerability, resilience, and raw creative power.
Beneath the iconic galvanized roof — that symbol of Caribbean shelter, survival, and adaptation — these artists reimagine what it means to exist, to dream, to create, and to become.
Evocative portraits.
Layered, expressive figures.
Nostalgia woven with strength.
Barbadian womanhood — fluid, complex, unapologetic.
A conversation. A transformation. A redefinition.

Figurative. Surreal. Unapologetically layered.

Alanis Forde (b. 1996) is a Barbadian portraitist working in oil and collage, building powerful visual narratives that explore identity, memory and presence. A Barbados Community College graduate and full-time artist for seven years, her work forms part of public and private collections in London, Nigeria, the United States, and The Caribbean Museum Center for The Arts in St. Croix.
She is also a member of A3 Design Studio — the team behind “The Stamp,” the tallest mural in the Eastern Caribbean, located on the Barbados Postal Service building in Bridgetown.
From international residencies in London to features in ARTnews and Sugarcane Magazine, Alanis continues to shape contemporary Caribbean portraiture.

Meet The Artist | Anna Gibson
Unfiltered. Vulnerable. Unafraid.
Anna Gibson is a Barbadian contemporary artist whose work moves between realism and expressionism, confronting how women navigate identity, beauty, and the pressure to evolve. A Barbados Community College graduate (BFA, 2017), she has spent over seven years building a practice rooted in body manipulation, cultural memory, and internalized experience.
From UN Women’s 1 in 3 Art Exhibition to murals at Hilton Barbados, Grantley Adams International Airport, and the Barbados Post Office through A3 Design, Anna’s work lives both in gallery spaces and on public walls. She is also a recipient of the Fresh Milk / Clara Lionel Foundation Artistic Fellowship.
Her paintings question the constant reshaping of the “self” — exposing the tension between vulnerability and survival, nostalgia and reality, masking and becoming.

Meet The Artist | Akilah Watts
Bold. Layered. Unmistakably Caribbean.
Akilah Watts (b. 1996) is a Barbadian multidisciplinary artist working across painting, mixed media, sculpture and relief. Her practice explores Black Caribbean identity, heritage, and personal narrative through a visually rich, culturally grounded language.
A Barbados Community College graduate (BFA, 2017), Akilah made her international debut at Miami’s Prizm Art Fair shortly after graduating. Her work has since been exhibited in New York, Berlin, Johannesburg and throughout the Caribbean. In 2024, she was awarded First Place in the Mustique Contemporary Caribbean Art Prize, further cementing her place as one of the region’s most compelling emerging voices.
From international residencies in the USA and UK to founding the Greedy Gift Shop — a curatorial project reimagining Caribbean souvenirs — Akilah continues to challenge and expand how Caribbean identity is seen and celebrated. She currently serves as Visual Arts Coordinator for CARIFESTA XV.

Kerry Alaric Cheeseboro, curator of the KAC Gallery of Fellow Artists on artist Julianne Gill’s mural at the new hotel Indigo.
“I came to Barbados from Australia in 2001. I worked for a design company, and I designing and painting furniture. I did some murals as well, of the very traditional kind of work back then, which lots of monkeys, palm trees, birds, that kind of thing. We were doing a lot of very ornate furniture back then because modern design hadn't yet really hit Barbados, in a *furniture* way.
I did very similar work for 5 years but then got into some more contemporary art, which I enjoyed and still enjoy. And I started to do a lot of murals, mainly paintings and then interior design.
Then, in 2010, I went off on my own and have been doing a lot of art, some interiors as well, but mainly mainly art.
Barbados is very similar to Australia in the sense that it's likewise a very outdoor lifestyle. Obviously I love the vibrancy of Barbados, the colors, the beaches, vegetation — it is all so very inspiring. It’s great being an artist here.
I am very honored to have been selected by and to work with Therese Hadchity; Therese has lived here for years and is huge in the Barbados art community, so she’s definitely the better fit to pick the local artists to have their works shown throughout [Hotel Indigo], be it murals and other paintings, sculptures, mosaics, you name it. It is a great honor as well to be a part of this fabulous group of creatives.”
— Julianne Gill, KAC GFA SOLO Artists for November 2025, commissioned for this wall mural titled "Looking Up at Hunte’s" for the Vista Rooftop Lounge, located in Hotel Indigo in Brigdetown, Barbados

The Barbados Photographic Society presents ‘BLACK & WHITE MOMENTS’
A fine art photography exhibition at Caribbean Brushstrokes Gallery
Opening night reception Sunday April 15th, 6.30pm - 8.30pm
Artist Talk: Wednesday 25th May, 2pm - 4pm Exhibition ends May 9th
This exhibition aims to showcase the remarkable talents of the members of the Barbados Photographic Society. We are confident that Black & White Moments will be a significant cultural event, drawing art enthusiasts and photographers alike.
Definition of Black & White Photography:
Black and white photography is a photographic style that captures images using shades of grey, ranging from black to white, rather than full colour. It emphasizes contrast, texture, lighting, and composition, often highlighting mood, emotion, and timeless qualities. This style is commonly used for artistic expression, documentary work, and historical photography, as it can evoke a sense of nostalgia or focus attention on form and content without the distraction of color.
Conclusion:
Black & White Moments promises to be an intriguing exhibition that highlights the versatility and artistic potential of black & white photography. We eagerly anticipate the participation of the talented members of the Barbados Photographic Society and look forward to showcasing their exceptional works at the Caribbean Brushstrokes Gallery in April 2026. “I’m so happy to finally share that I’ve been invited to participate in the 61st International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia (@labiennale), *In Minor Keys*, running from May 9 to November 22, 2026!
Having just watched President Pietrangelo Buttafuoco and Koyo Kouoh’s team present the ideas that have shaped “In Minor Keys” and share the list of artists, I feel overwhelmed and very grateful for this opportunity.
Produced by La Biennale di Venezia, the exhibition is curated by Koyo Kouoh, who suddenly passed away on May 10th, 2025. She worked collaboratively with her team of professionals, including the advisors Gabe Beckhurst Feijoo (@gabefeijoo), Marie Helene Pereira (@neneperei) and Rasha Salti (@rashasalti); the editor-in-chief Siddhartha Mitter (@siddharthamitter); and the assistant Rory Tsapayi (@westvirginiababy).
I can’t wait to welcome you to Venice during the opening week. If you can’t make it then, the biennial will be open throughout the season.
With immense gratitude to everyone who has supported my practice over many years which has made this moment possible, and to the incredibly sensitive and hardworking Biennale team for bringing this edition together. Grazie!”

There is a saying, “Like mother, like daughter”.
If one is referring to the mother and daughter duo of Kavitha Shenoy and Mohita Shenoy, then this saying is true.
They have both completed bachelor of arts degrees in English literature, they share a love for creatives, reading and art and are both artists in their own right.
That’s not all! They manage a business – Gallery for Caribbean Art –together, with the aim of putting the spotlight on Barbadian artists and their work.

Am I a Bad Girl, Nanny? Cries of Innocence and of Experience
by Joscelyn Gardner
February 27th - October 3rd at the Barbados Museum & Historical Society.
“The BMHS is pleased to announce the exhibition Am I a Bad Girl, Nanny? Cries of Innocence and of Experience!
In this new body of work, internationally recognised Barbadian artist Joscelyn Gardner engages with two ambrotypes in the museum’s historic photograph collection as sites of fragments, silences, and ethical tension. Through lithography, embroidery, and layered material processes, she imagines a visual world seen through the eyes of Eva Douglas Richards, the child in the care of Harriet Thomas Weekes, depicted in a rare shared portrait from the 1850s. This exhibition invites us to reflect on the complexities of colonial legacies shaped by care, power, and intimacy.”

Harriet Thomas Weekes: The Right to Opacity at The Barbados Museum & Historical Society.
Feb 27th - Oct 3rd.
“Announcing the exhibition Harriet Thomas Weekes: The Right to Opacity, which engages two rare photographic records of a Black Barbadian woman who lived from enslavement into legal freedom (1815–1897).
Rather than seeking to tell her story in full, this exhibition embraces what cannot be fully known, honouring Harriet without reducing her to the limits of the colonial archive.
Through photographs, documents, and community voices, visitors are invited into a space of listening, reflection, and shared meaning-making, where presence matters more than completeness.”

“What an honour it is to share that Joscelyn Gardner’s “Am I a bad girl Nanny?
Cries of Innocence and of Experience” and “Harriet Thomas Weekes: The Right to Opacity” are now open at the @barbadosmuseum! It has been a labour of love, and I am so grateful to have worked alongside incredible people in developing these ambitious projects. Huge congratulations to @joscelyn.gardner on a beautiful new body of work, and thank you for choosing the museum to debut it. Deepest appreciation to Harriet Pierce, co-lead on “The Right to Opacity” and to my colleagues, exhibition contributors, Nation Linguist partners, the invaluable BCC student volunteers, friends and everyone who shared in the opening event yesterday. These exhibitions hope to act as conduits rather than conclusions, and I’m so excited for the coming months to see where they take us. ⏰”

These two fascinating, interrelated exhibitions – one of a 19th-century Black Barbadian, the other by a contemporary Barbadian-Canadian artist – pose intriguing questions about the past.

“Times goin’ change again an’ things too, and that great British Empire goin’ change too, ’cause time ain’t got nothin’ to do with these empires.” – George Lamming, In the Castle of My Skin, 1953
For a small island, Barbados has an enormous amount of history. If you take the time to look, this history is all around, packed into 432 sq km (167 sq miles): it is in the buildings and place names, the faces of the inhabitants, and the very soil of this Caribbean island nation-state.
Museums have long been understood as authorising institutions, but that history reveals itself only from particular viewpoints. What are the conditions that make stories possible? How can museums confront the weight of traumatic histories?
Two fascinating, interrelated exhibitions on view at the Barbados Museum & Historical Society (BMHS), attempt to address this, by placing two women front and centre of the narrative – Harriet Thomas Weekes, a 19th-century Black Barbadian, and Joscelyn Gardner, a contemporary BarbadianCanadian artist. These exhibitions continue a conversation within the museum of what it means to hold history and to be accountable to the lives contained within its collections. The director of the museum, Alissandra Cummins, clarifies: “What assumptions have we inherited and what absences have we normalised and what new understandings might emerge if we listened differently?”

“For over two decades, the Studio Art BFA program at the Barbados Community College has been organizing overseas art study trips for students. In the past, destinations have included Havana, Cuba; London; New York City; and Venice, Italy, to see the prestigious Venice Biennale.
These Art Study Tours have proven to be extremely important to the strength of our program, exposing students to world-class museums and galleries, and has contributed to the consistent improvement in the quality of work produced by our graduates.
In May this year, we plan to take the students to New York once again.
To make this aspiration a reality, the faculty and students are embarking on an ambitious fundraising program. The trip will comprise nine students and three tutors. We must raise funds for airfare, accommodation, tickets for nine museums, and city transportation. The cost will be approximately 22,000 US dollars (1,835 per person).
We have already received some generous donations, but we need your help!
As the coordinator of the program, I have been fortunate enough to see the impact these trips have had on the students and their work firsthand. I've seen the joy and amazement in their eyes when they see works of art that they have only seen in books and never dreamed they would see in person. It has been a blessing to be able to facilitate this experience for our students. Please help us do it again!”

I have, for so many years, wanted to create a free online reference book where anyone, in any part of the world, may access the creative people in Barbados. I could not do this on my own and Kathy Yearwood heard of my idea, offered to partner with me and I happily agreed.
What started out in March as a small book of what I thought might be a maximum of one hundred and fifty pages turned into a tome of over three hundred pages. A mixture of excitement and fear at what we had taken on. And here we are in December 2011 with a book showing off the talents in Barbados. So exciting.
The eight month adventure began. Finding artists, photographing them and their work. From March 2011 to October 2011 Kathy and I collated the artwork, the bios and statements and travelled around the island garnering images and information.
Large collections of artwork in homes. Convincing people who thought they were too old and forgotten and watching them smile as their work was photographed and having them talk about themselves so that we could create a bio for them. Literally slipping down the hills of clay at Chalky Mount to see an original kiln and spend the day with the potters. Temple Yard with the Rastafarian community where they are blessed with talent, especially carving, and then coming away with gifts of pineapples and avocados. Photographing in the rain with an umbrella in one hand and a camera in the other to get the right angles. Going to openings and craft shows and talking to many. Coming to my home, going to Kathy’s, and going wherever was needed. Meeting the different personalities in so many locations as I photographed many of them for their portrait photo for the book. Remembering some who have left us. A labour of love, learning and fun.
The thank you part as I could not have done this on my own. Norma Springer who encouraged me to “take the book and run with it”. Kathy Yearwood who offered to partner with me collating and to create the book for artists in Barbados. Alison Chapman-Andrews for helping Kathy and I proof read. Amazing how much you miss no matter how many times we went over it. Sue Bain for offering her professional opinion and suggestions as a copy editor. Peter Boos for all the encouragement. Laura Lin Hutchinson for her introduction. Finally, the most important people, the creative souls who put their trust in Kathy and I to show them off to their best. I hope we have done this.

“Hi! Welcome To Antillean Gallery of Art!
My name is Jeena Chatrani and I recently started Antillean Gallery with the intention of promoting and selling art from Caribbean artists online.
I'm an artist myself and I've found that the art scene in Barbados could greatly benefit from some online presence. For the last 6 years I've been a full time artist and have had to learn a lot about the business behind selling art. It's not easy to make it as an artist but it is so fulfilling.
With Antillean Gallery of Art I hope to help raise the standard of art and artists in Barbados, and eventually across the Caribbean.”

Helping the young talent where we can.
This pandemic has created financial difficulties for so many in the arts and they lose any chance to make a career of art.
I just received a donation of art supplies being kindly given by artist Jeena Chatrani, curator of Antillean Gallery of Art online gallery. Thank you Jeena.
These will go to a very talented 17 year old to help her keep drawing and painting.
Would you consider looking around your painting/studio space and see if there are any art supplies that you may not want or need and help the future talents of Barbados.
Either give directly to artists whom you feel may need the help or contact me via private message here and drop off the arts supplies and I will happily disburse them to those in need.
Please be aware of the dignity and pride of those receiving.
Please don’t add their names here. Private message me.
Allow them to decide if they want their names added to art supplies being given to them.
Thank you
Corrie

Our Mission
To fuel the development of culture through training, research and the creation of opportunities in cultural industries.
The NCF’s two major roles are: developmental and commercial. In its developmental role, the Foundation uses culture as a tool for national development fostering and supporting the various art forms and new cultural products. In its commercial role, the Foundation is responsible for the promotion, production and hosting of cultural festivals and associated events that are considered economically viable or socially acceptable. A key part of this function now includes the responsibility for the staging and execution of major governmental and national events. In addition, as culture becomes more pivotal to national and international policy, the National Cultural Foundation continues to re-assess its responsibilities in light of all its functions.
of the NCF are:
To stimulate and facilitate the development of culture generally
To develop, maintain and manage theatres and other cultural facilities and equipment provided by Government
To organize cultural festivals
Assist persons interested in developing cultural expression.
To provide opportunities for Barbadian artists/artistes to showcase their talents with the end result being an increased demand for local work
To educate Barbadians concerning their heritage
To offer Barbadians and visitors alike a high quality product that informs, educates and entertains
To equip our cultural workforce with technological skills and training to excel in their particular art forms
To strengthen the local cultural product and in the process increase profits to the shareholders
To create high quality products that will be competitive on the local, regional and international markets
To maximize the role of the cultural sector in the tourism industry

“Somewhere, amid the darkness, a painter measures a blank canvas, a poet tests a line aloud, a songwriter brings a melody into tune. Art inspires, provokes thought, reflects beauty and pain. I seek it out even more in these times. And in so doing, I find hope in the human spirit.”
