Club’s tennis leadership again honored by USTA Director of Racquet Sports Zach Williams and Pro Emeritus Gerry Maingot were honored as two recipients of the United States Tennis Association’s inaugural 35 x 35 President’s Impact Award. The awards recognize individuals and organizations across America for contributions to the growth of tennis. Zach and other winners were recognized at the 2026 US Open and invited to the President’s Suite during Fan Week, part of celebrating their achievements. Gerry could not attend.

Gerry and Zach with their awards at the Club. The President’s Impact Award supports the USTA’s 35 x 35 strategic initiative, seeking to make the United States the world’s leading tennis-playing nation by growing the tennis playing population to 35 million by 2035. This initiative aims to inspire healthier people and communities by expanding quality coaching at all levels, maximizing court availability and supporting the next generation of players, according to a USTA press release.

Tennis This award honors those who have made a meaningful impact on the sport over the past two years at the national, sectional and community levels. Whether through introducing a new player to the game, supporting local programs or volunteering countless hours, the President’s Impact Award shines a spotlight on the people who are dedicated to expanding and strengthening local tennis communities. “The growth of tennis happens every day in communities across the country because of people who care deeply about our sport and work tirelessly to share it with others,” said Brian Vahaly, USTA President and Chairman of the Board. “The President’s Impact Award is our opportunity to say thank you, recognize the difference they are making and celebrate the role they play in shaping the future of tennis.”

Ladies Op36, MGA scramble results; thoughts on keeping things simple

Lindsay Thompson, Larken Sutherland, Sharon Sedwick.

Letter from Joe Corpus Christi Country Club is the place to be these days. We want to thank you all for your continued support, by participating in our clinics, OP36 programs and events. In August we had 76 people participate in our OP36 programming. These clinics take place on Tuesday through Thursday evenings from 4-7:30 p.m. To see the kids, ladies and couples showing so much interest in improving their games, is so fun for us to see. So from all the Golf staff, we thank you for your participation. Larken Sutherland was our latest OP36 Ladies’ graduate. Larken shot a -3 33 on Tuesday morning to advance to her next level. Six ladies participated on that testing day. Congratulations!

Lindsay Thompson, Larken Sutherland, Sharon Sedwick.

Shannon White, Gail Sims, Jessica Cain.

Letter from Joe

Couples Op36 Congratulations to Fernando Huerta and Mike Ewing (at right) for passing to the next level of Couples Op36 on Wednesday!

David White, Megan Fuentes, Lauren Rutter, Pranoy Banerji.

Riley and Fernando Huerta, Mike Ewing, Lindsay Boswell.

Letter from Joe The MGA Tuesday night Scramble had another great turnout. 28 players participated in our nine-hole event. Congratulations to the winners! First Gross: 29 Lyle Murphey Butch Wisehart Rey Borrego Tanner Johnson First Net: 27.4 James Aleman Adrian Rodriguez Eric Schultz Dominic Scrivner 2nd Net: 28.2 Sam Bliven Damian Shipley David Hamilton Joseph Walton The Ladies Group had seven players for their Tuesday night nine-hole event. The ladies have been doing a lot of work on their games over the last month or so since I arrived. We have seen great participation in the Ladies OP36, Ladies WGA Wednesday Clinics and on their playdays! Thank you ladies for all the activity and eagerness to play better golf! Keep hitting it straight. I’ll have Juniors OP36 results next week.

Letter from Joe Par Fore the Course By Joe R. Mitchell Jr. PGA Head Golf Professional The ole adage of “Keep things simple, stupid,” keeps coming up in my daily routine. This got me to thinking a little more on teaching philosophies as well. Over the last 20-plus years, the golf consumer has been inundated with technology and information. We’ve seen the increase in video technology and Trackman technology to help people get better. For the best players in the world who play golf for a living, this information can be valuable. It can also hurt your game if you chase the wrong information. Golf Professionals who teach have also relied on technology as well to help with their instructional programs. I use video from time to time to help my students see things in their swings so they can get a visual on what I would like them to do. I always show a before and after in each session.

Letter from Joe As most of you have gathered, I like to keep things simple when teaching. That leads me to our word of the week. Simplicity. For most people that can be the best course of action when teaching them. In my opinion, giving a student things they can actually do within their games with the time they have is the better way to go. I smiled the other morning when I was listening to Michael Breed on his morning show on XM Radio. Michael Breed is a top 100 instructor. He was the PGA Professional Teacher of the Year in 2012 and he had a hit show for years known as “The Fix” on the Golf Channel. Michael Breed has used technology throughout his career and has used it very successfully. But on his Monday morning show they talked about his word of the day. That word was “simple.” He said, “sometimes if your ball goes right, the face is open. If the ball goes left, the face is closed. If you want to hit a putt straight, make sure your face is lined up square to your intended target.” People, it can be that “SIMPLE.” Get out, practice and keep it simple! Talk to you all soon. Come see me!
