Huston, we have a repeat Defending champ holds off late-charging Kevin Smith to win second-straight Club Championship Remy Huston started the second day of the Men’s Club Championship with a three-shot lead over Lee Smith. He ended up winning his second-straight Club Championship Championship Flight by one stroke – over Kevin Smith. Kevin Smith was three shots back heading into the 16th hole, which he birdied, then parred the par-3 17th while Huston bogeyed – cutting his lead to a shot. I putted good yesterday. I hit the ball really well today, but just couldn’t get enough putts to go in,” Kevin said. “It just came down to not being able to make enough putts to make up enough ground on Remy when he played a good, solid round,” he said. Remy and Kevin have known each other since middle school times and played on the golf team at the University of Incarnate Word.

Meanwhile, Lee finished third after shooting 7075 and Brian fourth after posting 76-70. All three Smiths are past champions. Brian Smith hit more fairways Sunday, he said. “Yesterday, every time I missed the fairway, I was in like the worst place you could be. Today, I was in a lot of fairways and made a couple of putts when I needed to,” he said. When asked if he was not too upset with the two people finishing ahead of him, he said: “Oh, I won’t sleep for a few days, but that’s OK. I’ll punish myself enough, just like I know they would punish themselves enough. But I’m glad we can all still play, which is fun.” Lee Smith said it’s been about five or six years the three of them have been playing good

I’m just glad I can still do it and give them a little bit of a run for their money – but it’s getting harder. I have to try to sometimes keep myself from watching him as a dad because Kevin played really well today. I just didn’t play well but I do find myself very interested in how he’s playing – and Remy too,” he said, adding, how Lee – like Kevin – has known Remy since his middle school days. “They played basketball together in high school, so they go way back,” said Lee.
First flight Samuel Bliven won the First Flight low gross and low net with a 76-75, rallying from a rough start. “I had a terrible range session Saturday morning. I did my best to hold it together,” he said after starting four over through the first five holes. “Then I got it rolling from there.” He also won the Overall Net title and the cherished parking spot. Butch Wisehart finished second to Bliven for gross and net. He was the Overall Net champion last year. He went 76-76 this year, one under his handicap both days.
Golf Second flight Trevor Prewitt won low gross in the Second Flight by three strokes with an 84-83. But he was three over going into #16 when he tripled that par four, then posted a nine on #18 after getting stuck in a fairway bunker. “I was playing pretty well,” he said and a little surprised to discover we won. “I’ve only been a member for about three months, so this is the first tournament I’ve played in here,” he said. Jesus Aleman Ozuna won low net and credited what he’s been learning in the Club’s Op36 program. “They’ve been working with me on getting around the green in two strokes,” he said, instead of trying to always be on the green in regulation. So he’s worked on his short game and putting. “That freed me up because I don’t have to hit a perfect second shot. I just need to get it anywhere around the green. That class has been very helpful,” he said. Adding a “mini driver” – between a 3-wood and a driver – has also helped. “It’s kept me from going out of bounds several times. It’s pretty easy to hit straight. Maybe I lose 20 yards compared to a driver and that’s helped a lot,” he said.

Hoskins wins second Boys title, Hinojosa wins first girls title Carter Hoskins won his secondstraight Junior Boys Club Championship Saturday, shooting a two-under par 70 – which was almost a 69, but he burned the edge of the cup on the 18th hole. The Incarnate Word Academy freshman – who is on the golf team – shot seven shots better than a year ago when his 77 won the title. Hoskins shot even par on the front nine and two-under on the back. He birdied six holes: Got up-and-down on #2. Drove #7 and two putted. Hit a 56-degree wedge to ten feet above the hole on #9 and made the putt. Hit a wedge on #13 to 15 feet below the hole and made the putt. “I hit a really good drive on #15 and hit a downwind, knockdown 8 iron from 180 yards and two putted,” he said.

Renee Hinojosa won her first Junior Girls Club Championship title Saturday, posting an 88, but originally had plans to be in a tournament in New Braunfels if she got moved up from a wait list. “I was at Operation 36 on Wednesday and they said, ‘You should play in the tournament, Renee,’” she said. She didn’t get in the New Braunfels tournament and signed up Friday for her home club tournament. Hinojosa started playing seriously after making her Flower Bluff High School team, she said. She birdied #16 Saturday – the hole she lives on. Hinojosa stopped to say hi to her American Akita named Creed. “He gave me good luck and I hit right on the green,” she said of being left with an 8-foot put she made. “So shout out to Creed,” she said.

Champions and their wives enjoyed the Past Champions Dinner, Friday, August 14.
Night of champions Joe Mitchell Jr. wanted his first Past Club Champions Dinner since becoming the Club’s Head PGA Golf Professional to be a mix of the Masters Champions Dinner and the Ryder Cup Dinner – which includes wives. Like the Masters meal, the past champion sets the menu and defending champ Remy Huston chose ribeyes. “I called all the past champions and invited them. I just want to enhance some of the traditions, just add to them, make them a little more intimate,” he said. Mitchell had past champions tell the year they won and tell stories. Ham Rogers, Mitchell said, got emotional about playing with his friends and the relationships people build being at a place like the Club for decades. “It was pretty cool listening to them talk and how much it meant for them all to be in the room together,” he said.
