Hatridge, Blackmar win titles Paul Hatridge says he got the “monkey off his back” winning his first Men’s Senior Club Championship and Carol Blackmar won her 19th Women’s Club Championship over a busy weekend. Hatridge shot a 72-72 and won by six strokes over defending champion Jeff Davis. “My game is lots of pars,” said Hatridge. But it was different over Saturday and Sunday for Hatridge who had ten birdies, six bogeys and two double bogeys, he said. “It was topsy turvy. It was good to fight through some adversity. It felt good to put together a couple of good rounds,” said Hatridge. He’s felt he should be competitive, so it was satisfying to win – especially after his Saturday start, a double bogey on #1. After struggling a little more on the back nine, Hatridge birdied 15, 16 and 17 to finish 1-under for his even-round 72. “I got up and down on 15, hit a gap wedge on 16 and made the putt, bounced it onto the green on 17 to three feet,” he said, adding the flag was up front. Hatridge finished Saturday with a two-shot lead over Samuel Bliven and three shots ahead of Robert Epps. On Sunday, Hatridge shot two-under on the front, then had more adversity. “I fanned a four-iron to the right on #10,” leading to a bogey. He parred #11 after hitting a tree off the tee. He hooked a drive on #12, leading to bogey and also bogeyed #13. But he birdied a few holes coming in to win comfortably. “I was happy both days I finished strong and had a respectable score each day. I wanted to shoot under par, but it was hot and super windy,” he said. Davis also shot a 72 Sunday to finish second with Bryan Grove and Dan Dibble tied for third, two shots back of Davis. Grove has won the senior title twice and the Club Championship once. Davis has a Club Championship title and multiple senior titles. “I told Paul you need to play good and get your name on this trophy – and he did,” said Grove. Please see next page

Continued from page 7 Grove was a bit surprised to win the Net title, feeling he didn’t play as well as he hoped. “I didn’t expect it, but I’ll take it,” he said. He’s getting back into competitive golf after back surgery a year ago. “It was my first tournament in a while. It was nice getting back out there,” Grove said.

Women’s Club Championships Blackmar easily won her two match play rounds to capture her 19th title and was thrilled to shoot a 31 on the front side in the championship match Sunday. “It was pretty exciting to shoot 31 for me,” said Blackmar, who saw her Please see next page

Even though her match was done early on the back nine, Blackmar shot 38 on the back, sinking a birdie on #18 to shoot 69. “I wanted to see what I could shoot,” she said, with bumps on #12 and #13. “It was a good day for golf for me.” But she didn’t have time to pose with the trophy festooned with her name. She had to drive to Austin for practice rounds for the Texas Cup at the Barton Creek Crenshaw Course. Golf Continued from page 9 won her three matches but was disappointed the South team didn’t win. Even though she’s won the club title so many times, she recently returned to competitive golf after coaching at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. “It’s good to see my game going in the right direction and I’m enjoying competing again,” she said. Stephanie Hamilton won the first-ever Ladies Net Championship, posting 105 points using the Stableford scoring system. She finished five points ahead of Sacnicte Trevino’s 100. She was consistent enough on the first day – not making pars but not playing horrible – then making enough pars on Sunday to win, which surprised her, she said. “It was not on my bingo card,” said Hamilton, who credited her husband David with caddying for her and helping their group with rules. She also credited Op36 for improving her game, which she called “the best decision I’ve made as an adult.” Continued on page 12

Playing has made her feel like a kid again. “You meet great people who become friends for life. We have women who are doctors, lawyers, CEOs, stay-at-home moms,” said Hamilton, a Realtor. “It’s exciting to have something for ourselves.” Her game also got a boost when she realized she was a left-handed golfer and got the right clubs, she said.

Letter from Joe

Joe R. Mitchell Jr. PGA Head Golf Professional

Women really stepping up their games; one favorite club can build confidence Hello to all our amazing CCCC Members! Thank you to everyone for making our tournaments, clinics and OP36 classes so successful. We held the Senior Men’s and Ladies Club Championships this past weekend. We had 19 men play in the Senior divisions and 12 ladies participate in our dualformatted championship. Congratulations to Paul Hatridge for winning the Senior Club Championship with even-par rounds of 72-72 over the weekend. Brian Grove won the Net Senior Title with rounds of 74-70. Carol Blackmar Men’s Senior and Women’s club championship trophies.

Letter from Joe defended her title with wins over Melanie Durst-Douglas and then over Shawn Pettus in the Championship Match. Lynae Canales won the consolation match over Melanie Durst-Douglas on Sunday. In our first-ever Women’s Net Championship we conducted a two-day Stableford scoring event. This is a format where you get points for bogeys, pars, birdies and eagles. Stephanie Hamilton captured the title by earning 105 points over two days! Congratulations to all 12 of our ladies for competing! We are definitely seeing the ladies’ golf programs growing here at the Club. I’m so proud of all of them for their hard work. Their games are getting better every day!

We had a busy BUC Days We had a busy Monday hosting the annual BUC Days tournament with 132 players participating! Lots of good scores were shot and great food was consumed.

Battle of the Ages This week we host the Battle of the Ages, the annual old vs. young competition. Thirty-six players are participating in this Ryder Cup-style format. The “More Experienced” gentlemen are the defending champions and 54 points will be up for grabs over the two days of competition. Good luck to both teams. I’ll have complete results next week.

FYI: Port of Corpus Christi Tournament next Friday A week from today, Sept. 25, we’re hosting the Port of Corpus Christi Tournament at 8:30 a.m.

Letter from Joe

Par Fore the Course By Joe R. Mitchell Jr. PGA Head Golf Professional Jack Nicklaus once said, “It is better to hit the wrong club with confidence then hitting the right one with no confidence.” This leads me to my tip of the week. What is the definition of insanity? Answer: Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. This leads me to these thoughts for you and your game. For most golfers I suggest you find a club in your bag you love and use it as much as possible. This definitely rings true for my beginner golfers or ones trying to improve faster. Practice with that club as much as you can. Hit it often on the course. This can be a 7 iron or a favorite hybrid. Use it off the tee, use it around the greens. The reason I say this is you trust that club and feel confident with it. That confidence will bleed into the other clubs. That’s where the positive mind set comes in. We need to build that confidence in our games and within ourselves. I would rather hit that 7 iron consistently 160 yards down the hole then tee off with that driver I have no confidence in. Keep practicing and improving. Come see me!
