We hosted STPGA Player’s Cup; get ready to compete and my tips on how to compete I hope all our amazing CCCC members are having a great week and staying hydrated! This South Texas heat has definitely hit us hard!

Guess who won Pro-Am? The Club hosted the Southern Texas PGA Player’s Cup this last week. They kicked off the event with an intimate six-team Pro-Am on Sunday. The team sponsored by the Law Firm of Anderson Alexander won the Pro-Am along with yours truly! The team consisted of Austin Alexander, Clif Alexander and Robert DeLeon. Robert DeLeon, Clif Alexander and yours truly.

I want to personally thank our sponsors that helped raise money for the event and the STPGA foundations: Kleberg Bank Port Of Corpus Christi Cavender Buick and GMC North A2X-Anderson Alexander Your support made this event a huge success. The Professional event took place on Monday and Tuesday with 82 players in the Open Division and 28 in the Senior Division. Bret Gary, an assistant at Sam Houston State University won the Open Division with rounds of 66-69 for a -9 total. Omar Uresti of Austin, Texas fired rounds of 6571 and won in a playoff over Carl Baker.

Letter from Joe This week at the Club; upcoming tournaments The rest of the week has been busy with OP36 classes and our first night of the WGA Ladies Clinic that took place Wednesday night. We had nine amazing women participate in the clinic. This clinic will run the next two Wednesdays from 5:30 p.m.-7 p.m. The excitement around the club continues to grow with our programming and upcoming tournaments. Senior and Ladies Club Championships will be held September 12-13. The Battle of the Ages will be September 17-19. Get signed up for these great events!

Par Fore the Course Joe R. Mitchell Jr. Compete is the word of the week. Your Pro competed in this week’s STPGA event and didn’t play up to his ability! This mainly stems from lack of practicing and playing over the last few months. However there were moments of hope … lol. I shot rounds of 75-71 to finish tied for 27th place out of the 82 golfers. So not exactly awful, but surely not what I expect from myself. However in each of those rounds my competitive nature took over. Early on I was 4 over and 2 over respectively through the first five holes of the back nine. I started on #10 each round. So being over par early can affect a player in two different ways. You can either get negative and lose focus, thus resulting in
Letter from Joe
rounds near 80, or you can bear down and compete. I decided to take that route. The remainder of those two rounds, I played in 4-under par. For most golfers that’s considered a positive or a win with our internal self. We have all had success and failures on the golf course. That’s just part of the game. Why do we play competitive golf? Why do we push ourselves to do something that can be very uncomfortable at times? It’s because it’s in our DNA to be competitive individuals. There is not a more individual sport that tests who you are than golf. To compete is to do your best. It’s not to try to beat others. Let’s look at that word a little differently. Compete with yourself and your goals. Make your practice and course time competitive. Next time you’re on the range, I want you to play holes. Imagine hitting a drive between specific targets. Hit that second shot at a practice range flag like you’re hitting your second shot into a green. Then walk over and either chip or putt at the practice area like you would on the course. Make your practice time like competition. I promise it will make your time on the course a lot more comfortable. Get out and compete with yourself, then compete with the course. All the “other stuff” is just outside noise. Keep swinging and come see me soon.

Cooking With Chef Ramos
Chili Oil Yield 1 quart
10 tbsp. red pepper flakes 6 Guajillo peppers, chopped 4 tsp. peppercorns
4 tsp. coriander seed 3 tsp. mustard seed 4 cups vegetable oil
Combine all ingredients minus the oil into a heatproof metal bowl. Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. The oil should reach 370 degrees F (190 C) and no higher than 400 F (200 C) if read with an instant thermometer. Carefully pour oil or use a ladle to transfer oil into the bowl of mixed spices – it will bubble a few seconds and cook the spices. While the oil bubbles, stir gently with a metal spoon to mix the spices, so they’ll cook thoroughly. After the oil cools, strain through a cheeseclothlined chinois. Store covered at room temperature for two weeks or up to six months in the fridge in an airtight container. EXECUTIVE CHEF/ HAROLD RAMOS

I just want to thank the grounds crew for all their hard work. Heat indexes have been 105 to 110 every afternoon. It’s toward the end of another long, hot summer. The end of the marathon if you will. We ask a lot of our crew. We ask them to go above and beyond for tournament preparations. I know they are all tired yet they keep on going. I would appreciate them hearing from our membership just how much they are appreciated. Come on Fall!
