Kevin Smith survived two playoff holes to win his second Corpus Christi City Championship Open Division title Sunday at Oso Beach Municipal Golf Course – 13 years after his first. Smith won the title in 2013 after graduating high school before going to play college golf at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio. Smith shot a 69 on Saturday, tied for the first-round lead.
Before he teed off Sunday, he saw Troy Lopez shot a 65 to grab the clubhouse lead, ten shots better than his Saturday score. Smith fired a 71, tying Lopez with a total of an even par 140.
“I’ve known Troy for probably 10-15 years. I think we played against each other some in high school,” said Smith. Lopez had left the course, but someone from the tournament texted him when Smith was on the back nine, Smith said, adding he saw Lopez when he was playing the 17 . th
The playoff began on the first hole, where Smith and Lopez tied, heading to the par-3 second.

The pin was at 178 yards, middle left and Smith hit a 6 iron, the shot finishing just off the back edge, but puttable.
“It landed about pin high, then one-hopped over a ridge on the back part of the green where it falls off,” said Smith.

He was trying to land the ball a bit short of the pin.
“I was kind of between and 6 and 7 iron. I thought a 7 iron would only get to the front of the green, so I went with a 6 iron, choked down on it a little bit and tried to take a little bit off of it. I hit a really good shot. It just carried a little bit farther than I thought it might,” Smith said.
The other reason Smith didn’t hit his 7 iron was a crosswind.
“I would have to hit the 7 iron pretty hard and high and get it up in the wind, which I really didn’t really want to do. So I thought the 6 was the better club. I could hit it a little flatter and take a little bit of the wind out of it,” Smith said. Meanwhile, Lopez’s tee shot ended up short left of the green. He chipped onto the green, leaving it about 15 feet from the hole, Smith said.
Then it was Smith’s turn, facing a putt with the first third up an upslope, then it went downhill and downwind toward the hole.
It finished four or five feet short, just enough to be nervous.
“I thought I left the putt 10 feet short and it kept rolling and rolling. I still had a downhill putt that was fast with the wind pushing from behind. It was one of those really quick four or five footers that could get away from you if you got a little too aggressive,” he said.
Lopez was away but just missed a right-to-left putt on the low side. “He almost made it and saved par,” said Smith.
Smith thought his putt was right center and that’s right where it went so he could celebrate with his dad Lee, mother Sarah and girlfriend Jordan. Also, Lee finished 14 and Kevin’s brother Brian finished 5 . th th

Hello everyone. We’ve completed another fantastic week here at the Club. We’ve been busy with summer camps and OP36 testing this week. I’ll be writing a weekly article for Club Life called “Par Fore the Course.” These articles will be a mix of news about what’s going on, along with being instructional and motivational! I believe in positivity in everything I do! I try to bring that positivity and energy into my daily life. It’s not always easy, because “LIFE” happens.

Positivityisourwordoftheweek!
Let’s dive into what that means for Golf. Webster’s Dictionary says Positivity is the practice of focusing on constructive, optimistic and solution-oriented thoughts, emotions and behaviors. Now how can we take that word and pair it with the two words that I highlighted in bold to help us form a good golf game?
Positive thinking allows us to have an optimistic belief we can do something well. Focusing on being positive and optimistic allows us to recognize when we are and are not doing that.
Take these words and basic ideas of what theymeanandapplythemtoyourpracticesessionsandplayingtime.Weall knowthatgolfdoestakesomebasicphysicalskillsandpracticetoimprove. Butpositivethinkingisamajorhurdleweallhavetotrytogetover.Whether youareahigherhandicapperorscratchgolfer,thementalbattlesarealways goingtobethere.Iwantyoutochallengeyourselftothinkmorepositiveand optimisticwhenworkingonyourgames.“Focus”onthosewords.Failure happens,butitdoesnotdefineyou!Havefunplayinggolf!Tellyourselfthat youwillsucceed!Keeptryingoverandoveragain.Thinkingpositivewillgoa longway.Itwillmakeyourtimeonandoffthecoursemoreenjoyable.Take sometimeandcomeseeme.Iwouldlovetohelpyouimproveyourgames!

1 cup fresh cilantro leaves
2 medium cloves garlic
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1/4 cup sour cream
Juicefrom1lime 1tsp.whitevinegar 1/8cupoliveoil
Koshersalt&freshlyground blackpeppertotaste
Combine jalapeños, cilantro, garlic, mayonnaise, sour cream, lime juice and vinegar in a blender jar. Blend on high speed, scraping down sides as necessary, until smooth. With blender running, slowly drizzle in olive oil. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Sauce will be quite loose, but thickens as it sits

The Traffic Circle landscaping is now complete. We planted Red Turk’s Cap, Dwarf Tampon Holly, Emerald Goddess Liriope, Gregg’s Mist Flower. These plants were chosen for drought tolerance, effluent irrigation and butterfly attractions. With Corpus Christi water restrictions, we have to bring in effluent water to irrigate by hand.
Golf Course update
TiffEagle Bermuda grass nursery. This is the same grass as our greens. This grass will be used to repair damaged and weak areas on the greens. It will be ready for harvest in about 5 weeks.
