Joe Mitchell, Corpus Christi Country Club’s new PGA Head Golf Professional, knows the Club and its golf course well. When Mitchell played golf for Victoria High School, he played tournaments at the Club and other area courses.
“My best friend, Chris Treviño, who was in my wedding, played at Corpus Christi Carroll,” said Mitchell, who starts his new job July 14.
“I first met him in 1994. We matched up in a playoff here in Victoria where I came out victorious, then we battled again in Corpus a couple weeks later and I won that tournament. He was the best player down there,” Mitchell said.

They played college golf together at UT Pan American.
Another friend of Mitchell’s from high school, Mark Kennon, worked for Doug DeSive at CCCC, during DeSive’s almost 30 years here. Then DeSive’s daughter Morgan worked for Mitchell when he was PGA Director of Golf at Victoria Country Club.
Mitchell has been PGA Head Golf Professional at the Dormie Network’s exclusive TXO facility up the coast in Point Comfort the past three years. A group from CCCC was visiting TXO and the subject came up about the Club looking for a new head pro.
“I was going around with the group and I was promoting one of my exassistants,” Mitchell said. He texted his former colleague to ask if he’d sent his resume and found out he’d taken another job in the Houston area. Then Mitchell was asked if he’d be interested in the job.
“Well, I hadn’t thought much about it,” he said, but decided to submit his resume, because he’d been thinking about “getting back to the golf world, back to a club job.”
After a phone interview followed by a trip to the club to interview, he was heading back to the golf world.
TXO was a lot of fun, he said.

It’s kind of like a fantasy world, said Mitchell. But he’s excited about getting back to meeting people, teaching, doing club fittings, selling merchandise and more. And bringing what he did at TXO.
“It’s high-intensity service and hospitality, which I can’t wait to bring to Corpus,” he said, excited about building on what’s happened the past few years with the Club’s golf program.

“I’m really fond of developing the staff. I like to grow talent, empower my crew,” said Mitchell, who received the prestigious Bill Strausbaugh Award for Leadership and Development in 2022.

Continued from previous page he was named the Southern Texas Chapter Golf Professional of the Year. “I want to get the membership excited,” he said about existing programs, looking at the tournament schedule, bringing in big outside events.
“Let’s see where we can go with it. Corpus is the real game here in South Texas. Great golf course, great history. There’s no reason we can’t get it back to national recognition again,” he said. He’s also impressed with the course renovation.
“I love it. I played it with my assistant two summers ago in a two-man Section event that we won. I remember the design before. Some of the rerouting early in the course – with three and four – I think that renovation was awesome,” said Mitchell, who also praised the regrassing. “The surface is just incredible to play on now,” he said. Mitchell and his wife Lorie, Corporate and Events Sales Coordinator for Golfballs.com, plan to move to Corpus. Their son is starting his junior year at UTSA and their daughter, who has played high school golf in Victoria, is getting ready to start college.

As everyone knows about the severe drought and low water supply here in Corpus Christi, we should all be grateful for the abundance of recent rains. I certainly will not complain about the extra work and inconvenience that comes along with the deluges. While we want everyone to be able to enjoy the course every day, we also want to protect our wonderful course. Thank you for everyone’s understanding of when it has been necessary to keep the carts off the golf course.
In May we had a total of 10.44” of rain. So far in June we have received 5.63” of rainfall.
That adds up to 16.07” of total rainfall in the last 45 days. The course is just saturated as the water has nowhere to go. Our annual average for the Corpus Christi area is 29”, we have received over half of that in the last 45 days.
