&tradition presented The Preview, an exhibition that reflected their bold ambition to bridge the gap between old and new to produce furniture with timeless appeal, showcasing classic mid-century Danish designs from past masters alongside new pieces from contemporary talent. After trawling through the Danish design archives, &Tradition decided to curate a series of tables, chairs and lamps by legendary design duo Hvidt & Mølgaard. Shown for the first time at The Preview, these reissued pieces - including a standing lamp that is in production for the first time - display the pair’s rigorous approach to furniture design. In addition to these enduring classics, The Preview exhibited new pieces from Jaime Hayon including Elefy - a shell chair inspired by the shape of an elephant, and Setago – a playful table lamp.

Traditions, styles and imagination met at the Cappellini Circus, an exhibition concept designed by Giulio Cappellini, where design and fashion came together, past and present mingled, and reality and imagination was blurred. Cappellini also celebrated 30 years of iconic design at an installation at Cappellini Point, and favourites were on display at the Super Hotel – a design hotel concept curated by Giulio Cappellini.

The Poltrona Frau stand and showroom concept was imagined by architect Michele de Lucchi. ‘Connecting Experiences’ – a visionary concept based on the designers ‘Earth Stations’ research project which aims to explore the future of communal learning, relaxation and work. Urban Passion was Zanotta’s theme for Milan Design Week. Their stand was designed to give the impression of looking in through a partly open window of the most populous cities in the world. Showcasing new designs amongst favourites, the Zanotta stand evoked scenes of domestic life in six scenarios in which different urban landscapes inspired furnishing solutions that reflected their metropolitan identities.

Gregorio, 29, 20124 Milano MI, Italy NEWS ‘Centres of Rotation’ by Fritz Hansen and Kasper Kjeldgaard is an exploration of the duality of two illuminated objects so closely related, despite obvious differences – bought together in a relationship by being perfectly balanced. ‘Centres of Rotation’ is all about the love for details, craftsmanship and simplicity. It is love for aesthetics and for the almost fragility that love itself, so often is.

CAPPELLINI SUPERHOTEL PROJECT AT SUPERSTUDIO Domestic environments are constantly redefined and the same is true for the hotel industry, which is increasingly moving towards an intimate dimension, recreating a familiar mood even in shared spaces. Cappellini is responding to this trend with SUPERHOTEL, the project for a contemporary and international hotel staged at Superstudio.

trends | RE-ISSUED CLASSICS
We saw revivals of classic furniture from over half of our brands exhibiting at Design Week this year, with the re-issue of over 20 historic and iconic designs. Montana reissued an iconic 1971 design by Verner Panton – the Pantonova seating system (1) – originally designed for Varna, a Danish restaurant that became notorious in the 1970s, thanks to the bold colours, shapes and patterns of its interior design. Carl Hansen expanded their portfolio of design classics with the re-introduction of over five designs. Amongst these was the CH30 dinging chair (2) by Hans J. Wegner, and the Huntsman Chair and Deck Chair Series (6) by Børge Mogensen. Cappellini showcased the 01 Chair (3), which was originally designed in 1979 by Shiro Kuramata. We also saw a new interpretation of the 1991 S-Chair by Tom Dixon - the S-CHAIR BROCADE (4), redesigned in precious brocade depicting an original drawing from the eighteenth century. &tradition presented The Preview - an exhibition of reissued mid-century classics and new contemporary pieces. After trawling through the Danish design archives, &Tradition decided to curate a series of tables, chairs and lamps by legendary design duo Hvidt & Mølgaard. Amongst these was the Boomerang chair, Chamber chair (5) and Pinwheel table (5).

trends | DEEP AUTUMNAL TONES The love affair with subtle nudes and neutrals has lessened this year in favour of a bolder palette of deep, autumnal tones. From re-charge stations throughout the Brera District, to interactive stands and installations, technology had a strong presence throughout Milan Design Week and Salone del Mobile and we were fascinated to see the thought-provoking ways in which the design and tech worlds collided. COS presented a 3D-printed pyramid pavilion by Arthur Mamou-Mani - an interlocking modular form, part-sculpture, part-pavilion. Known for his skills in research and technology, Mamou-Mani’s Londonbased studio has created open-source 3D-printing software that is widely used across the industry. Google partnered with scientists on a MDW exhibition that showed how different aesthetic experiences can impact our health and wellbeing. A Space for Being required its visitors to wear a wristband that detected their physical and physiological responses to each space. OE Quasi is the latest innovation by Olafur Eliasson for Louis Poulsen. To ensure glare-free illumination, the LED light sources are placed where the metal vertices meet, with silicone light guards used to disperse the light along the frame’s inner edges. The light guards produce an even illumination that is directed towards the lamp’s core and reflected back into the room by the layered white laminae. The overall effect is of a glowing orb, encased in a shell that looks as if ‘it could be from outer space or the bottom of the ocean’, as Eliasson says.
