He said a new career support initiative called “AAP Connect” that will provide students with internship and career placement as well as portfolio support is in the works

Several AAP students voiced their concerns with regard to more effectively integrating the three divisions of the college Pablo Maggi ’16 said fine arts students often feel isolated in the college

“I’m curious to see ways we can integrate the [fine arts] community into the college Can we expect to see a physical connection established between the buildings?” he asked

Although Kleinman said building a physical connection between Tjaden Hall and Sibley, Milstein and Rand Halls is not possible, he said he does support greater cohesion inside the college, as well as making the college less rigorously divided by academic departments

“I totally agree with the idea of integration My one hope was by expanding the [workshop to be accessible to all fine arts students] and making it sufficiently interesting to all students of all disciplines that learning outside the curriculum would occur, ” Kleinman said

ho could forget their first dancefloor makeout (Super Mash Bros, Ar ts Quad Concer t, Aug 28, 2010)? There’s often a stigma attached with being “that couple” in a crowd, as if others are offended by two people who just met expressing a mutual desire for some tongue But when you find yourself questioning the choices you make, understand that college hands you two guns in your latex holster: oppor tunity and a carefree attitude You have four years in which it’s ok to walk into a blacklit house that isn’t yours with peop l e yo u m a y b a re l y k n ow, a n d t h e n decide: “Hey, that redhead in the corner is pretty cute I’ll ask her if she wants to rhythmically sway to Ke$ha with my jeans-covered boner in between her butt cheeks ” Where else can you do that? Apart from occasional hearsay, I knew very little about Fork and Gavel upon entering the newest addition to Cornell’s dining scene I knew it was run by the owners of Manndible Café, I knew it was replacing the oft-lauded Hughes Dining in the Law School and I had heard of its scrapes with the Tompkins Health Department (which I assume have since been resolved); however, what I could not foresee, and what many may not have expected, was that this small, unassuming eatery would pack a surprising punch The same artist responsible for Manndible’s cup-with-jaws has obviously been working hard, as his artwork plasters the butter-yellow walls of the café, infusing the other wise plain space with a sense of local spark Taking yet another obvious cue from big brother Manndible, Fork and Gavel also features locally-made pastries and locallyfarmed produce Any sandwich can be served with gluten-free bread, and there are several fairly enticing vegetarian options Still, I found that where

Manndible sometimes falls short (e g mediocre breakfast sandwiches and a somewhat heavy reliance on ready-to-eat dishes), Fork and Gavel brings game

The menu is well rounded and features a variety of freshly prepared, delicious items, such as paninis, subs, breakfast burritos and attractive side dishes (take their Poutine, for instance French fries smothered in gravy and cheese curd) More importantly, though, the food is nice and tasty The local burger that I ordered was lovingly handformed and covered in juicy sautéed onions; my friend described his Cuban panini as having “everything you’d want on a Cuban panini ” The butternut squash soup was rich and warm, a cupful of steaming justice

The verdict is in: as Collegetown forces more and more of its small restaurants into nonexistence, Fork and Gavel stands as a much needed alternative to CTB, Jack’s and That Burrito Place It’s close, it’s convenient and it’s good I rest my case

“I am the artist and culture doesn’t cue me I cue culture,” declared Lady Gaga in a SiriusXM interview last week This is just one example of a stream of could-it-be-Kanye statements she gave regarding the impending release of her fourth studio album ARTPOP, a work which she promised was going to be the record “of the millennium ”

As much as I love her, Lady Gaga is a mess of contradictory impulses that which says she is a true artist, a visionary, a slave to her own creativity above all else, and that which openly admits to a ruthless desire for fame, a pathological craving epitomized by living “for the applause ” ARTPOP isn’t going to be dubbed the album of the millennium, and isn’t even going to be called the artistic highpoint of Gaga’s career, but it can at the least be called the Lady Gaga album that most aptly sums up all of the contradiction, confusion, mind-blowing imagination and raw ambition that Lady Gaga encapsulates She introduces it as such in her opening track, asking, “Do you wanna see the girl who lives behind the aura?”

This invitation sets off a string of songs that read as a bulleted list of confessions mostly of addiction To fame, to dope, to attention, to recognition of her creative genius, to sex, to pain The tracks “Applause” and “Do What U Want,” are ones we ’ ve already seen as singles turns out they were a pretty reliable sample of what the rest of the album would be Gaga waxes philosophical or sometimes gets downright spiritual with her exaltation of fame, money, fashion and a whole lot of sex and drugs in nearly every track A collaboration with T I called “Jewels N’ Drugs” is catchy enough, but its title is pretty selfexplanatory after some decent verses from T I , Gaga proclaims over and over (and over a backdrop of full-on Skrillex imitation) her desire for, “Jewels and drugs, baby Hustle ”

The Atlantic’s review of ARTPOP called the whole work “kind of a bummer,” which I’m not ready to agree with, but they are correct in assessing a significant difference in message

between ARTPOP and Gaga’s past albums Tracks like “G U Y , ” “Sexxx Dreams” and “MANiCURE” are airheaded pop all about escaping from how icky life is and how tricky emotions are, even if it’s just for a night “G U Y ” begs, “touch me, touch me, don’t be sweet, ” and “Sexxx Dreams” admits “I’m broken from the one before He was kind of nasty ” Both “Venus” and “G U Y ” use what reads as a middle school student’s brief fascination with Greek mythology to make a series of puns off of Aphrodite and Eros, and represent the most obvious examples of Gaga’s fondness for the ornate, the allusionladen, the historically-steeped and musically pastiched, sometimes going way over the top and into the realm of caricature “Donatella,” too, is a ranty bit of pop-rock that puts Gaga’s entire persona on the chopping block, saying “I am so fab, check it out: I’m blonde, I’m skinny, I’m rich, I’m a little bit of a bitch,” and detailing a narcissistic infatuation with fashion and beauty that borders on cult worship While it is as interesting as promised to finally see the true, terrible side of the Gaga persona, and at her own hands, the execution is nothing like what a Gaga album usually promises it’s all pop, no art

The late-album track “Dope,” starts out as a gorgeous piano and organ-backed acoustic belter, the moment alone with Gaga’s unmistakable voice and raw power that we’d been craving through the entire album But as Gaga moves through some stellar phrasing in the verses and makes it to the chorus, the punch reads more like punch line, with the refrain being “I need you more than dope ” It echoes hollowly at best and sounds like a Lonely Island project at its worst

The sole narrative song on the album, “Mary Jane Holland,” takes on the trope of the ballad-for-the-torturedlady, but ups the ante kicking up the pace and warping portraiture into the reveal of a new alter ego Gaga says, “I think I could be fine if I could just be Mary Jane Holland tonight,” and proclaims her intent to “make deals with every devil in sight,”

in an impressive and musically ambitious chronicle of a jointsmoking Russian prostitute giving zero fucks “Gypsy” is also a standout and a knockout, the type of power rock-ballad more recognizable in the ’80s heyday of Heart or Journey “I don’t wanna be alone forever,” belts Gaga, “but I can be tonight ”

The track seems like it could have been something off the cutting room floor from 2011’s Born This Way, an LP that was mainly genius pastiches of musical history ground up with the expected Gaga edge It was that ability to perfectly interpret musical history and create theatrical homages to what was grand, parodies of what deserved it, that made Lady Gaga what she is And so this album, laden with pure pop, intermixed with an unfamiliar electro-mania and offering few glimpses of Gaga’s true talent, falls perilously close to self-indulgence and audience alienation

All in all, it’s hard to piece the puzzle together, and as Gaga repeats in the eponymous track, “ARTPOP could mean anything ” But what it most feels like is a moment of cathartic purging for a woman who has spent most of her career promising that attention isn’t the only reason she’s doing all of this Lady Gaga has broken down walls, shattered ceilings for women in the music industry and I will never argue that she hasn’t turned herself into an icon’s icon with the talent to back it up However, ARTPOP ’ s sole relief comes from the fact that it probably was high time that a population who held Gaga up as a demi-goddess hear some real talk about a few of her flaws namely that we ’ re not her Little Monsters and she’s not our mother She’s as fucked up as anyone else and these aren ’ t problems she’s spending much time thinking about fixing She can hide anything sinister under a veneer of jewels, dope and Donatella

With the release of Matangi, M I A continues to refuse to be labeled She sings too much to be a hip hop artist, raps too much to be a pop star and positively refuses to settle for a beat that would be in anyway similar to something you would hear on the radio Matangi finds M I A , along with a top-notch production team, melding East and West, new and old and pop and rap into a sound that is unique to her alone And, a few notable missteps aside, she does so with surprising alacrity and skill

M I A naturally spurs comparisons to Kanye West, both for her idiosyncrasies and more relevantly for her album’s sound The Matangi tracks are similar to what I expect would have resulted had ‘Ye recorded Yeezus in Mumbai and found inspiration in a Hindu god instead of a lamp This is impressive given that Matangi has been in production since 2010 like West, M I A is not afraid of pushing musical boundaries M I A also successfully answered the qualms of some fans (like myself ) who were concerned that her publicity stunting at the Super Bowl (specifically, flipping the bird) and a relatively conventional lead single in “Bad Girls” hinted at someone who was ready to sell out for a more profitable, radio-friendly style While this album is not devoid of pop moments, the structure and sound maintains an unpredictability and distinctness not present in the template-driven songs of many of M I A ’ s pop contemporaries

The production of Matangi is absolutely the album

focal point Frequent M I A collaborator Switch, of Major Lazer fame, produces the majority of the songs, but also receives help from the likes of Hit-Boy, Danja and Doc McKinney (The Weeknd s producer) It is obvious that M I A was heavily involved in the development, as virtually all utilize Bhangra (Indian) or other foreign-styled sounds and sequences This brightens the music, lending an airy, free vibe very different than the dark moods promoted by the synthesizers relied upon in most hip hop production However, within individual songs, the track will jump disjointedly between sounds and rhythms, giving the entire album a frantic, disorienting sound that can make it a somewhat exhaustive listen

Lyrically, Matangi is a mixed bag, never consistently finding a footing M I A is certainly not a superb lyricist, not that she really expresses interest in being one Most of the verses are short, the rhymes cheap and the details scarce The majority of the songs generally have some idea, but they depend on vague statements or rhetorical questions to communicate This works, but it relegates the album to more of background music than something you would really want to listen to And this is disappointing, because M I A is one of our more aware semi-mainstream artists, both politically and socially In many ways though, this lyrical weakness parallels the well-documented contradiction of M I A how could someone so well intentioned and outspoken frequently seem so uninformed?

Containing the only feature of the album, “Exodus” and “Sexodus” both use a sample of The Weeknd’s “Lonely Star” to varying effects The materialism-questioning “Exodus changes the pace and is a relief to see midway through, but album closer “Sexodus feels redundant The EDM-influenced Y A L A (You Always Live Again) is an ironic take on everyone ’ s favorite motto and a reflection of M I A ’ s Hindu roots It is well done, if late to the party The Hit-Boy-produced “Boom Skit” is short but focused, as M I A goes directly after her critics while displaying her rapping ability (complete with a Kony 2012 reference!) “aTENTion”, about tent refugees, also has some lyrical dexterity, hidden well within chopped and looped vocals and a throbbing beat

Ultimately, Matangi really does have the bones to make a great record they just need to be assembled in a more effective way It seems if Rick Rubin had not been so busy chilling on Jay Z’s couch, he could have been an asset here removing, shortening and stripping a couple of songs each Instead we are left with an album that is delightful for a song or two, but at 54 minutes, can become tedious to listen through While I cannot help but think of what it could have been, it is still a good, distinct album that is a worthy addition to the M I A catalogue

With all the attention that Devonté Hynes garnered after co-writing and producing Solange’s “Losing You” and Sky Ferreira’s “Everything is Embarrassing,” it was only natural that he would return to his own work as Blood Orange with gusto, as everybody watched closely with high expectations And by god, Hynes has not only met lofty expectations, he’s exceeded them: Cupid Deluxe is a return to the true spirit of ’80s synthpop and disco that manages to stay emotive and lush It is clear evidence of a grown-up artist who has finally found his place

It hasn’t always been this way Hynes struck out a solo career as Lightspeed Champion, where he wore cardigans and uncomfortably sang indie country songs In one album cover, he stares off into the distance, looking a little lost and very alone

Hynes is best when he works with others, as he said in an interview: “If there’s a better voice [than mine] suited to a song I usually have a female voice in my head, anyway then I would rather her sing it ” When he dropped his debut album as Blood Orange, Coastal Grooves, he was still mostly twanging out stark road music, which sounded like a tepid Dirty Beaches, by his lonesome Coastal Grooves, however, showed that Hynes has a gift for picking out great melodies

With Sky Ferreira’s “Everything is Embarrassing,” everything seemed to fall in place The song ’ s simple drum beat and church-like synths worked pure magic over Sky Ferreira's brooding lyricism and somber voice Hynes reached even greater heights with Solange’s “Losing You,” which dialed up those elements for a song with a cosmopolitan sheen The music video for “Losing You,” featuring Solange on a trip

through South Africa with impeccably-dressed locals, makes that globalism explicit “Losing You” set up a winning formula: Just add a funky bass, a worldly beat, somber synths and a talented vocalist with unlimited emotional yearning That doesn’t mean that Hynes uses female vocalists as a crutch Cupid Deluxe’ s instrumentals definitively prove Hynes has talent Rather, it evinces his own artistic confidence to recognize and accept when something works best Opener “Chamakay” is replete with marimba shuffling and R&B beats that provide a foundation, but it is Chairlift’s Caroline Polachek, with her silky-smooth voice, who performs a beautiful duet with Hynes, that propels the song forward “I see you waiting for a girl like me to come along,” they both croon with a heart-wrenching strain of emotional longing Polachek concludes the song by bearing that emotional weight alone, repeating “ come along” in a ghostly echo, as if repeating it enough would make her wish come true

“You’re Not Good Enough” is ostensibly different, with more pronounced funk bass and deliberately flippant vocals “I never was in love,” he brushes off with Samatha Urbani of Friends, “ you know that you were never good enough ” But this and “Chamakay” are really two sides of the same coin: Cupid Deluxe is a return back to the heady, confusing time in the ’80s when disco, synthpop and funk all blended together “Uncle ACE” has a decidedly disco drumbeat and “It Is What It Is” is also clearly ’80s style synthpop The album is complex, colorful and a little sexual in the way that other “disco throwback” albums are not Disco in the ’80s was gay, ethnic and gender-bending in ways that would surprise lis-

teners today Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories sounds sterile in comparison Cupid Deluxe simultaneously has that magic touch of ’80s disco that deftly mixed heartbreak and yearning in ways that no other genre has bested

The legacy of ’80s disco was also about alienation and scraping by: It is impossible to talk about ’80s disco/synthpop without recognizing its cultural context The documentary Paris is Burning captures this with Harlem’s drag balls in the ’80s then, the balls were supportive places for homeless youth who were cast out of their homes for coming out But, as drag icon Pepper LaBeija explains in the film, drag balls were about looking “ as much as possible like your straight counterpart Rather than go around with prejudices about your life and your lifestyle, you can walk around comfortably, living like everybody else ” Drag balls were a delicate balance between self-expression against prejudice and an internalized prejudicial desire for a rich, straight life against self-expression

Cupid Deluxe, reflecting this mindset, is replete with precious moments like this where tragic perseverance is heroically upheld in the face of permanent vulnerability “But you can ’ t see me, when you ’ re pushing me away, ” a female voice blurts out towards the end of “No Right Thing ” “No one ’ s waiting for you anyway, so don’t be stressed now Even if it’s all you know just keep your head up, ” he croons in the beautiful conclusion “Time Will Tell ” It’s lonely at the top, but now Hynes can finally be himself

Built toSpill

In the Muted Presence of Heroes

Heckling is a well-honed and time-honored art, the refuge of any mildly intoxicated concert-goer tr ying to enjoy an opening band’s sort of crappy set or make light of a technical difficulty In small doses and at appropriate junctures, it can help the audience get through a particularly baffling performance with a little bit of light prodding (I m positive there were plenty of snarky comments coming from the crowd during Black Pus’s anarchic opening set for The Flaming Lips, though I’m even more positive that they failed to rise above the din of Brian C h i p p e n d a l e ’ s p e d a l - h o p p i n g p e rc u s s i ve assault) Still, I couldn’t help but feel a bit weird about the treatment Saturday night’s headliners at State Theatre were getting

“Doug Martsch is my baby daddy!”

“Please play “Car before I die!

“Or not! Don’t listen to me I bet whatever you play will be fine ”

For the unassuming Martsch, the frontman and mastermind behind indie rock legends Built to Spill, this type of fanboyish heckling seems to be misplaced Shouldn’t these things be shouted at, well, rock stars? As much as Martsch’s legacy as an unparalleled guitarist in indie’s spindly Northwest scene has been cemented by Pitchfork retrospectives, unapologetic (and positive) jam band comparisons and the breathless praise of gearhead fans, he’s not a rock star Hell, he’s the antithesis of the rock star archetype: He’s balding and unstylish in his dress and a modest (but thankful) communicator with the crowd Even when he closes his eyes while performing, he doesn’t do it in a messianic, “What I’m doing right now is a big deal” way; he jerks his head awkwardly in tandem with his strumming hand as he sings, as if singing is a necessary evil that comes with being in a band If punk rock were all about flaunting the conventions of classic rock dinosaurs while being as polite as possible

about it, Doug Martsch would be its Sid Vicious

Opener The Warm Hair (I unfortunately came too late to catch Slam Dunk sorry dudes! whose Welcome to Miami tape is well worth a listen for those with a soft spot for goofy, horn-assisted rock and roll) served as the perfect, if somewhat absurd, foil to Built to Spill’s anti-exhibitionism The Warm Hair are the type of hard rock band that doesn’t exist anymore, peddling grungy songs about shedevils that, frankly, wouldn’t sound out of place in the humorous “Preview” medley at the end of BTS’s There’s Nothing Wrong With Love It’s pulled off with panache, though; frontman Freebird Von Klauts (I shit you not) was born to be on stage, strutting around like Angus Young and beckoning for the literal spotlight when it came time for one of his guitar solos At one point, the band lurches into some drop-D riffage that bord e re d o n d i r g e m e t a l , a n d Vo n K l a u t s informed us that it was a love song

While the band induced some jaw-dropping, “Are they for real?” reactions, they won some of the crowd over with their exuberance and sheer ridiculousness I like their sensitive side: On their ballads, Von Klauts over-enunciates like Joey Ramone while indulging in the same simplistic lyrical tropes and bubblegum hooks that Joey’s band rode to star-

dom, albeit with funk-metal breakdowns If it’s shtick and it’s executed far too earnestly for it to be shtick it’s surprisingly tuneful shtick Though I could do without a lot of Von Klauts’s attempts at MTV Storytellersesque monologues, I’d be delighted to see The Warm Hair again, if only for their heart

When Built to Spill finally hit the stage, the State Theatre crowd rushed forward to revel in the muted presence of our heroes Some watched in awed silence, while others were in full-on revelation status, head-banging joyously as the band reached the “Stab” guitar breakdown, which evokes the sense of triumph usually reserved for the climaxes of Queen songs And while the opening of the concert enthralled, any hint of a rock star façade was cracked when Martsch ran into pedal trouble during Keep It Like A Secret track “You Were Right ” There were no diva moments or doting roadies; Martsch simply bent down and, in between singing the verses, fixed the issue himself Luckily for Built to Spill, the songs are so intricately arranged that even without Martsch’s solo lines, “You Were Right went along swimmingly thanks to the steadfast playing of fellow guitarists Jim Ross and Brett Netson

There were the signature Built to Spill moments: Wah-wah pedals, slide guitar and an E-bow a device that produces an elec-

tromagnetic field that causes guitar strings to sound as if they are being bowed all made on-stage appearances, much to the delight of the guitar nerds in attendance, and the band made sure to play the favorites The gauzy opening fuzz of “The Plan” washed over the venue beautifully, careening off State’s ornate walls and into the audience’s expectant ear c a n a l s T h e i r re g g a e - t i n g e d t a k e o n

“Wherever You Go” confirmed that if jamband labels are being appended to Built to Spill, they’re doing nothing to deflect them This is a good thing: this will be as close as I get to a Built to Spill cover of The Specials’ “Ghost Town” as I’m going to get in my lifet i m e A n d Pe r f e c t Fro m Now On t r a c k “Made-Up Dreams” was given an added swagger by the new rhythm section drummer Steve Gere and bassist Jason Albertini which meshed beautifully with Martsch’s defeatist lyrics (“No one wants to hear what you dreamt about unless you dreamt about them / Don’t let that stop you / Tell them anyway and you can make it up as you go”)

If t h e re ’ s a n y p re va i l i n g t h e m e t o Martsch s music, it s that contrast between the band’s euphoria-inducing guitar lines and Martsch’s own seemingly downtrodden perspective It’s an angle he shares with Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker: They both are studio perfectionists whose expansive soundscapes support narratives of insecurity and loneliness Even when, during their encore, Built to Spill launched into Blue Oyster Cult’s “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper” a song I’ve always dismissed as cheesy dad rock with a kickass cowbell part they were able to unearth a certain sadness and depth I hadn’t heard in it before It’s a trick Doug Martsch has been mastering for years: turning modest thoughts into monolithic anthems with just the help of his guitar If he never develops that rock-star persona, audiences like us are all the better for it

Cornell women ’ s basketball history for individual blocks in a game and also marked the first time in 10 seasons that a Red player recorded five or more blocks in a game Marshall also recorded five steals for the Red in 29 minutes of action

When asked about the team ’ s performance, head coach Dayna Smith echoed her captain’s sentiments

“I think against Colgate we were really able to clamp down early and get stops which allowed us to get into our transition game early on, ” she said “I was very pleased with the result and now it’s up to us to get up for Buffalo this Friday ” Buffalo, which is coming off a 65-47 victory over Binghamton, has historically owned the series against the Red Despite besting the Bulls last season and playing well in last weekend’s game, the team must watch out for complacency, Smith said

“I think against Colgate we were great in the first half, especially in terms of our defense,” she said “In the second half we eased off a little bit, which is something I hope we can fix against Buffalo We just need to stay focused the whole game and make sure we ’ re a l w a y s g i v i n g o u r m a x i m u m effort ”

Making sure that the team continues its communication and effort were the two most important things to Smith, who also said that with such a new team, it is important to build an identity

“We have a lot of new faces on the roster this year, so I think Buffalo will be important for us because, being early in the season, we ’ re still trying to figure out our identity as a team, ” she said “Once we do that, we can focus more on improving certain areas of our game For now, though, it’s all about learning about our players and their tendencies as well team ’ s mentality as a whole so that way we can be prepared come January for the Ivy League ” DiMagno said the game would be important for Buffalo as well, as it too has a young and developing team that also favors the fast break and an up-tempo style of

play

“I don’t think the fact that we beat them last year will play a huge role this Friday,” she said “They have a lot of young talent on their roster so I think for them, it will be all about coming in and standing their ground early on to show that they can compete even though they’re not the most experienced team they like to run and so do we so I think as long as we stay composed and play good defense, we should have plenty of opportunities to get out and score ”

Riders Maintain 21-Point Regional Lead

mance and that the riders learned from the mistakes that they made Saturday

“Even though we had a hard day points-wise on Saturday, the spirits were not down at all,” junior co-captain Sofia Steinberger said “I think [with] all the mistakes people made they were individually upset with themselves but they weren ’ t going to let it happen again on Sunday ”

According to de Rham, the team returned more focused after Saturday’s show

“I think people learned from their mistakes and came back more focused,” de Rham said

The Red currently has a 21-point lead in the regionals standings, followed by Alfred and Ithaca Alfred and Ithaca placed first and second in the region last season, according to Steinberger

Cornell will continue its regular season shows Sunday when the team will host the region at Oxley Equestrian Center The s

then make those classes as even as possible ”

Because the most important piece of equipment in equestrian is an animal with needs and a mind of its own, the horses are as much members of the team as the riders are

“[ The horses] work really, really hard the whole week leading up to the show to help us be ready,” Hannon said “So we really have to make sure that we take really good care of them because they’re such an important part of our team ”

The work that Breen and Hannon do in the barn on the day of the show eases the workload for Karn and the captains

“By running ever ything behind the scenes back in the barn, that lets Todd and the captains be up front doing what they need to do: actually interacting with our riders and doing the coaches that need to be done,” Hannon said

“We really have to make sure that we take really good care of [the horses] because they’re such an important part of our team.”

semester, but last season ’ s spring show was canceled due to an equine virus that spread around Oxley Juniors Madeleine Breen and Mar y Beth Hannon are responsible for organizing the preparation of the horses for the competition

“ This will be our first show operating as a team together but I think we ’ ve really got [ever ything] together,” Hannon said

Breen and Hannon’s responsibilities include assigning team members horses to care for during the day as well as assigning horses to different classes to compete in

“ We have to make the divisions as fair as possible, so we can ’ t put a really good looking horse with a bunch of P E ponies that will keep their head in the air because the overall picture of the rider and horse will look better,” Breen said Hannon also emphasized the need to place horses in the right divisions according to their abilities and the needs of the division

“Some divisions are bigger than others,” she said “ We need a lot of those mid-level horses, and we have to tr y and

The captains are responsible for providing moral support to the riders before each round, according to Breen, as it can be over whelming to be surrounded by the entire team

Historically, the Red is ver y successful at its home show Last fall, the team won class after class and came away with a perfect score Still, the familiar horses and setting can work against the riders at times, according to Steinberger

“It can also be hard sometimes because when you draw your horse you ’ re more ner vous because you know what the horse can do wrong, ” she said

The amount of rookies on the team may present a challenge this weekend, as the new riders are unfamiliar with what running an IHSA show entails Despite this, the Red is confident that things will go smoothly

“I think [our show] is a great example of ‘ many hands make light work,’” de Rham said “I know when I was a freshman I was ver y ner vous about how much work the show was going to be, but since we progressively prepare for things as long as ever yone can stay [on top of ] their task it goes pretty smoothly ”

Karn is confident that the team will maintain its strong regional lead throughout the season and be successful on Sunday

“I expect that they’ll do really well,” he said

Sports Editor and Ten Questions columnist Haley Velasco inter viewed senior field hockey captain Hannah Balleza

1 You are a senior captain of the field hockey team What has Cornell field hockey meant to you over the last four years?

It’s hard to put to words how much Cornell field hockey has meant to me in the past four years I’ve loved ever y moment of my time on the team and I have been so incredibly lucky to be on a team with the most amazing and beautiful girls ever We have made countless memories together and I have formed incredible relationships with the players and coaches

that will last forever

2 Can you pinpoint one of your favorite memories of being on the team?

I have got a lot of favorite moments, but this season playing against my sister was a ver y special game to me Playing against her was a bit strange because we have played on the same team in the past but never against each other It was even better that we beat Har vard that day

3 You are from Mar yland, so what’s the thing that reminds you most about home?

Well, my teammate Biz, who is also from Mar yland, carries around a bottle of

Old Bay seasoning and puts it on her food at team dinners Old Bay is definitely a Mar yland kind of thing so I am always reminded of home whenever she pulls that out Ithaca’s a pretty unique place, but there isn’t much about it that reminds me of Mar yland to be honest

4 I heard that you have an older brother and then a younger sister and brother What was it like growing up being the second oldest?

I loved growing up with such a big family and with many siblings for many reasons, but mainly because it has prepared me to fend for myself now living in a house with 10 other crazy girls I’ve learned to

lock my door, hide my lollipops and have the fire department on speed dial

5 If we opened up your music playlist right now, what would be on it?

Well, funny you mention that--on the bus ride back from Dartmouth, we had a team superlatives game and while Katy Weeks got most likely to be Beyoncé, and [Katherine Stone] got voted most likely to be Ke$ha, I somehow got voted most likel y t o b e 2 C h a i n z So m e t i m e s , w h e n

Mallor y braids my hair, I can see the resemblance, but I don’t really even have that much of his music on my ipod But overall, I am really not all that picky when it comes to music; I like all kinds of genres I’ve got a bit of countr y, a bit of hiphop and rap, a bit of folk music, a bit of pop and so much more

6. Do your teammates have any nicknames for you? What do they call you?

Yes they do They call me Ho Ho My love for twinkies (the food) somehow got me that name early on All the seniors on my team have nicknames too: Mallor y goes by Malpal, Keelin goes by Keelz, Carolyn goes by Carol, Shannon goes by San Fran Shan and Elly goes by Smelley

7 If you could pick anyone for your last Slope Day, who would it be?

Probably One Republic I have always been a big fan of their music, but I am pretty obsessed with their new album Native currently I listen to it way too much

8 You’re a hotelie, so what got you into that? What do you want to do after graduation?

My coach had mentioned the Hotel School to me when I had visited in high school and by the way she had talked about it, it just struck my interest It just seemed like a good fit for me at the time Never in a million years did I think I was going to be doing hotel administration in college, but I wouldn’t have it any other way There are a bunch of girls on my team that have switched into the hotel school and we just love it For the future, I am looking to pursue hotel design and development

9 If you could trade places and be on any of the men ’ s sports team at Cornell, which team would you choose and why? That’s a tough one, but I would say the mens soccer team Ever since my freshman year I really bonded with them I’m not the best at soccer, but at least I could spend some quality with them on the bench Also, if I was on the men ’ s soccer team, then I could lift with the field hockey girls twice a week in the spring and could sit in on their body comp test

10. You had your last game over the weekend which ended with a win over Dartmouth, how does it feeling going out on that note?

I couldn’t have asked for a better way to end the season Normally our games end with a tight score, so it was a relief to have a shutout and to win by three But at the end of the game it was really emotional for all us seniors We put so much into the program and have been through so much together, playing our last game was a ver y bittersweet moment Now I am officially a NARP and I am currently having trouble getting used to it I have way too much time on my hands

Runners Ready For Challenge at NCAA Regionals

The women ’ s cross countr y team heads into the largest competition that it has yet to face Friday the NCAA Northeast Regional meet with the hopes of claiming its place at NCAA Nationals

“ We are hoping to secure a spot at the NCAA championships this weekend The top two teams from each region automatically go, but there are also a number of wild card spots open that we have a good shot at, ” senior co-captain Emily Shearer said

Senior co-captain Rachel Sorna added that despite facing a tough region, she believes the Red deser ves to take the trip to Indiana after it placed 13th at the competition last year

“Our expectations for the Regional meet are ver y straightfor ward: qualify for NCAAs This has been our goal all season and we sure aren ’ t going to let up on it now, ” she said “ There are some great teams in our Region, so it won ’ t be a cakewalk, but we ’ re a great team too If we run what we are capable of this weekend, we will toe-the-line at NCAAs in Indiana next Saturday ”

Last weekend, the Red came in second the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships Cornell had won the meet for the past two years, but despite a stellar performance, was knocked out of first place by the Green

“Heps was a little bittersweet Obviously as the twotime defending champions we wanted to win again, but the Dartmouth team this year is extremely talented and they ran an incredible race that day,” Sorna said

“ We had by far our best meet of the season People really put themselves out there and took some great risks ”

Shearer added that despite looking for a third win this year, the Red was gracefully defeated by a talented Dartmouth team

“ We had won the Heps two years in a row, so obviously we were looking for the third win, but I’m proud of the way we ran and competed,” she said “ The Dartmouth women have a great team this year and they raced ver y well, so hats off to them It’s always nice to be faced with fierce competition ”

The team had three Ivy League finishers Sorna, Shearer and senior Liz Simpson who all contributed

C.U. Claims Win in Season Opener

Coming off of a 13-15 record in the 2012-13 season, the Red (1-0) began its 2013-14 campaign the right way as it cruised to a 76-62 victory over the Colgate Raiders (0-1) Friday night at Newman Arena

The Red have historically owned the series against Colgate, and the opening night win marked the team ’ s third consecutive victory over the Raiders The Red established an early lead and maintained it throughout the game, jumping to a 20-point lead by the end of the first half and winning the contest by 14

“We wanted to come out aggressive and set the tone early,” said senior captain Allyson DiMagno, who led the Red in scoring with 20 points “I think we had a good week of practices which allowed us to come out focused and execute a really defensively minded game plan That definitely helped us get the win ”

DiMagno also contributed five assists and nine rebounds, making her one of only four Cornell players to ever snag 700 or more rebounds The Red received a great team effort, as fellow starter and senior guard Shelby Lyman recorded 16 points on her way to becoming the second leading scorer for the Red

The bench also showcased its depth in the contest, as each of its players logged six or more minutes Senior guard Aspen Chandler and freshman guard Megan Leduc each recorded eight points as reserves Despite an impressive 76-point offensive performance, DiMagno cited team defense as the biggest reason the Red were able to come out ahead

“I think everyone played really well, we communicated on defense and were able to get out and run early off of steals which is what we wanted to do,” she said “I’m very happy that we were able to execute our game plan so well ”

The Red dominated defensively, as it totaled 14 steals, six more than Colgate, and tallied six blocked shots, five of which came at the hands of freshman

to the team ’ s strong 66-point finish

“Having three All-Ivy finishers was really exciting for the team That was Emmy’s third time receiving that accolade She has been such a steady presence on this team the last three years; it’s just incredible,” Sorna said “As for Liz, not only was this her first time being All-Ivy, it was her first time going to Heps That fact that she accomplished that in her debut Heps performance is absolutely inspiring I was so proud of those two girls, as well as the rest of the team ”
