Chapter House Unveiled

The Chapter House’s architects presented a preliminar y design plan to rebuild the iconic pub to the Ithaca Landmarks Preser vation Commission at their Sept 22 meeting, taking the first step towards redevelopment of the fire-damaged property

The plans include a complete replacement of the 4 0 0 - 4 0 4 St e

e Chapter House on its first floor and apartments on its second through fourth floors

Br yan McCracken, historic preser vation planner for the City of Ithaca, explained that initial plans to preser ve parts of the original building were deemed unfeasible after a second inspection of the property “ The building was exposed to the elements for three or four months,” he said “ The engineer who evaluated the building determined that significant

additional damage had happened after the fire due to its exposure to the elements A lot of the walls were saturated with water, floors were buckling and there were a lot of structural issues ”

The design was presented to gauge the commission’s initial, informal opinions on the proposed redevelopment McCracken stressed the preliminar y nature of the designs, noting that the architects, Jason K Demarest of Ithaca and Andy Sprague of Studio Mosaic Architecture in Corning, are still making changes to the plans in preparation for formal applications to the Ithaca Landmarks Preser vation Commision

“Usually a project for new construction will go

Commission is comfortable with [the project] ” McCracken said “At this point it’s hard to tell

Student Protester Found Guilty by UHB

The University Hearing Board, in its first action in 18 months, found Harvey M Teres ’72 guilty of a violation of the Regulations for Maintenance of Public Order last night

The incident for which Teres was charged occured on Feb 7 in Statler Hall during a demonstration against oncampus recruiting by the Honeywell Corporation

The UHB voted 6-2 to convict Teres of failing to identify himself on demand, to a safety division officer He was sentenced to probation for the remainder of the term It was Teres’ first appearance before the UHB He said he will appeal the decision An additional charge of disorderly conduct had been dropped earlier

Last night was the first time a representative of the press had been allowed to sit in on a UHB hearing The board’s deliberations, however, were conducted in private The closed session policy is intended to benefit the defendant, but Teres argues that it would be in his best interest to have the hearing open

Board chairman Linda Spooner said after the hearing, “He [Teres] was found guilty because the board ruled that

the ID must be shown immediately on demand ” She pointed out that the requirement for identification is intended to benefit the student by avoiding possible conflicts with law enforcement officers

Teres issued the following statement after the decision: “This hearing is part of the campaign of intimidation and harassment that this University is carrying out against the people of the community, involving false charges brought against selected individuals and picture-taking and the creation of political files of students and employees

Section IV, paragraph 3 of the RMPO states that “No person chall refuse or fail to comply with a lawful order of any clearly identifiable University or public official acting in the performance of his duties in the administration adn enforcement of these regulations ”

Teres’ defense was based on his assertion that when Sgt E J Smith of the Safety Division, who was in plain clothes at the time, first asked for Teres’ identification, he had not yet identified himself as a University official Teres said he asked Smith one or two questions about his rights and obligations, and that as soon as Smith had made it clear that he, Teres, was required to identify himself, he proceeded to do so Originally

Prof Explains Aftermath of Slavery

Advocates use of ‘Black Lives Matter’ messaging

Prof Edward E Baptist, history, discussed slavery’s continued legacy in American social and political structures at a Tuesday talk titled “Abolitionism, Modern ‘Anti-Slaver y ’ and #BlackLivesMatter ”

Baptist, who is also author of The Half Has Never Been Told, started his talk by challenging audience members to think about, the “relationship or lack thereof between ‘modern antislavery ’ and #blacklivesmatter ”

“When ‘modern slavery’ appears in the publicity efforts run by activists, the modal case is that of the sex-trafficked young woman often, in the versions which seem compelling to popular audiences in the UK and the U S , a white Eastern European woman, ” he said

Modern ideas about slavery “have very little to say about the ongoing movement for African American freedom,” according to Baptist

“African-Americans and others presumed to be descendants of the enslaved are still treated in crucial ways as enslaved,” he said

Baptist explained that, even over a century after its abolition, slavery still has profound impacts on the social structure of the United States

Fighting for freedom | Prof Edward E Baptist talks about the continuing effects of slavery on American society at a his “Abolitionism, Modern

into a ruthless, right-less, continually exploited state of being ” These prisoners, Baptist noted, are not protected by the 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery

“It’s not just that events ranging from the resistance to Obama’s presidential or existential legitimacy to the police killing of (to pick one of thousands) Walter Scott have moved us to see this,” Baptist said “It’s that these events, of course, are produced by the deep structures of a nineteenthcentury modern slavery that has never been fully abolished, just truncated and transformed ”

“Everyday in this country the descendants of the pre-1865 enslaved confront the dead labor of their ancestors.”

Baptist argued that mass incarceration, economic structures and racist attitudes have created an image of African Americans today as “fugitives” being chased back into their “historic cage ” This, Baptist said, is both produced and reinforced by “layers of direct and indirect, conscious and unconscious, personal and structural racism” and “the structure of wealth ”

“Everyday, in this country the descendants of the pre-1865 enslaved confront the dead labor of their ancestors, mobilized as a living force against them,” Baptist said

front of hotel lobbies while black, sit in houses while black, go to get skittles while black and so on and so on, ” he said

Baptist concluded by referring back to the “modern antislavery” movement and its need to incorporate #BlackLivesMatter‘s messaging into its campaign

“If modern anti-slavery organizations cannot confront their blindness about the lone struggle for African-American freedom, I fear that activists’ limited efforts against the only form of modern slavery which they can admit they see will leave trafficked and exploited people around the globe in a liminal, exploited state for many, many years to come ” Baptist said

Still, Baptist’s closing remarks came with an uplifting, motivating and even cautiously optimistic tone

Baptist pointed to the American prison system as a stark example of racialized practices which have come to be accepted by most of society

“In the U S , modern slavery persists most visibly for those African Americans trapped in the ever-growing American prison and jail system, ” he said “The rise of mass incarceration has now carried millions of Americans off the solid ground of family and community and

These remnants of slavery affect the African American community in a multitude of ways, Baptist argued, drawing on examples and statistics from “racialized policing,” to “job, housing and credit discrimination,” to economic status

“The attitudes, the policies, and the policing that shape mass incarceration and shape it as a disproportionately black social, cultural, and economic phenomenon affect all who drive while black, walk while black, stand in

“Only by naming, confronting and stripping away the badges and incidents of slavery for all people can we say that there has been even one successful process of abolishing slavery, ” he said “To do this, we will have to adopt, as happened in various crucial points in US and global history, new and more liberating concepts of what it means to be a citizen, to be a woman or man, to be white or black or to be free ”

Cornell Partners With Chinese Dairy Producer

Cornell signed a research partnership agreement on Sept 23 with Inner Mongolia Yili Industrial Group the largest dairy producer in China to find ways to improve dairy production, according to a University press release

The agreement emerged after the University and the Yili group signed a memorandum of understanding in April for research collaboration on increasing dair y product innovation

These public-private partnerships are necessary in order to find ways to feed the growing world population, according to Prof Martin Wiedmann, food science

“[This partnership is] needed to increase research to create a thriving global agricultural economy and provide high-quality food products for a world that is predicted to soon reach nine billion people,” he said in the release

Weidmann said partnerships of this sort give students valuable

insight into the global interconnectedness of food production

“A specific benefit for Cornell and our students will be that international public-private partnerships like this will enable us to gain insights into global food-related challenges and opportunities,” Wiedmann added

The partnership is expected to provide graduate students with research opportunities as well as possible undergraduate positions and internships

“Expected outcomes include improved training opportunities for students in dairy and food science as well as research outcomes that will develop improved dairy production and processing approaches,” Wiedmann said

One of the joint initiatives will seek to create an alternative cheese for the Chinese market This research will take place at Cornell and will be funded by Yilli, according to the University

According to Prof Carmen Moraru, food science, the new cheese product will focus on matching the preferences of the

audience by incorporating milk ingredients and soy proteins “ There are some technical challenges that we ’ re going to try to solve for them, using our knowl-

Richard Canfield, nutritional sciences, urged people to be cautious around lead contaminated areas

“I certainly encourage everyone to stay away from the fenced off area because it is likely to contain significant lead contamination,” he said “Lead is a neurotoxin that is particularly damaging to the fetus, infant and young child, but people of all ages should limit their exposure as much as possible ”

she “didn’t know about the situation” and added that when she visited the gorge over the summer, she did not notice any warning signs

Another resident of Gun Hill, Dylan Ciraldo ’16, agreed that the situation should have been publicized more to students in the area

“My friends and I went down the gorges and we were right [near] where the Ithaca Gun Factory used to be,” he said “At that point, I didn’t know about the lead contamination Gun Hill doesn’t tell you anything, I had to slowly piece it together myself ”

“Gun Hill doesn’t tell you anything, I had to slowly piece it together myself ”

In addition, he urged people visiting the area who might notice dust blowing from dr y soil within the fenced off area, or any evidence of soil escaping from inside the fenced off areas due to runoff, to report it to the appropriate authorities

Following these announcements, some of the Cornellians living in the Gun Hill apartments have called for clearer signage marking the areas of contamination

Eva Leung ’16, a resident of Gun Hill, said

Ciraldo added that when he entered the area of Fall Creek Gorge over the summer, he also saw minimal signage

“Gun Hill apartments are less than a third of a mile away from the site and many people don’t know about the contamination,” Ciraldo said “Why is there no disclosure law requiring Gun Hill to tell its tenants?”

Oregon to Begin Recreational Marijuana Sales

PORTLAND, Ore (AP) Discounts on pot, free food for folks with the munchies and live music will usher in a historic day for Oregon and for marijuana advocates across the country on Thursday, as recreational sales of the drug that is still illegal under federal law begin in the state Oregon is one of four states that have legalized the sale of recreational marijuana It will start with far more dispensaries than did Colorado or Washington state, where pot shops have been up and running for more than a year Alaska could

begin retail sales next year

Pot shops in Oregon that already sell medical marijuana have made big plans for the historic day and hope there is enough supply to meet what is expected to be a huge demand

“I’m just trying to basically stock up for maybe four or five times what the normal volume would be,” said Chris Byers, owner of River City Dispensary in the southern Oregon town of Merlin Some dispensaries will be opening just after midnight to get a head start on sales

Redrafting Ivy Athletic Eligibility

UNLIKE SOME OF OUR PEER INSTITUTIONS, athletics at Cornell are not always seen by students, administrators and alumni as the University’s top priority Still, for many, collegiate athletics play a transformative role in shaping an undergraduate experience To delineate the balance between academics and athletics, the Ivy League created a code outlining the rules for athletic eligibility at each college This policy allows students to compete for four seasons in a given sport, but only during their first eight semesters of education Additionally, students who have completed their undergraduate degrees on time or early become ineligible to continue playing for their respective teams, even if they choose to attend graduate school at the same institution

These policies, although well-intentioned, are antiquated and enforced unequally with no clear outcome as to how an appeals process will end Now is the time for the Ivy League schools to reconsider the policy in favor of system that gives athletes the ability to make choices they have come to expect at an institution of higher education in the 21st century Currently, the National Collegiate Athletic Association places a four-season limit on student athletes, with the Ivy League being the only collection of schools in the country that would ban a student athlete from completing all four seasons of eligible play if he or she has completed an undergraduate degree

This policy is often enforced sporadically across the league Students involved in the 2012 Harvard cheating scandal maintained a year of academic eligibility by taking a leave of absence before the first game of the season, an obvious loophole in this policy Other students, including Cornellians, have not fared as well with regards to athletic eligibility

For instance, Errick Peck ’13, a student in the School of Hotel Administration who was injured at the tail-end of his sophomore year, petitioned for a waiver for a fifth year of Ivy athletic eligibility, or his fourth season on the team Unfortunately for Peck, the school denied his petition and he was left to find a new school to compete at in only two months Similar stories are not uncommon throughout Cornell and the Ivy League, as highlighted in a Sun investigative report Wednesday All of this makes one point clear: The vague implications and restrictions of the waiver process push student athletes to jeopardize their eligibility if they cannot compete in all four seasons as undergraduates

By forcing a student to choose between his or her alma mater or athletics in these situations, the Ivy League is pushing many into uncomfortable situations These students, essentially driven out of the Ivy League, often make the decision to leave the college where they spent years developing friendships and becoming a part of a community on their respective campuses No student should be compelled to leave his or her school because of a desire to participate fully in all four years of athletic eligibility

We urge Cornell and the administration to take the lead among the Ivies in addressing the problems surrounding athletic eligibility While athletics may not be the University’s top priority, enhancing the student experience and curbing nonsensical policies must be prioritized by Day Hall Rewriting athletic eligibility clearly falls under this concern

Hey there We haven’t met before, but I’m “Jackie Oohhhh,” and I’m new to this section I’ve been reading these columns since my days as a naive freshman trying to navigate a college love life while living in a forced triple

I feel that it is only fair that I start this off with one clear disclaimer: I have been in a committed relationship for the better part of my Cornell career, meaning that I do not have any amusing stories about giving head in the Olin basement on Slope Day, or a ranking all of the people I’ve slept with in a given frat I sometimes live vicariously through the raunchy tales told in this feature of one-night stands after a few Long Islands (the drinks at Dunbar’s or the bagels at CTB really either could get me going), the awkward Tinder exchanges, the occasional same-sex experimentation or TA hookups

Luckily, my boyfriend and I let’s call him “Chuck” after my middle school virgin Gossip Girl fantasies have been #blessed with a pretty great sex life Still, a friend will ask me ever y so often, in a sorrowful tone, if things with Chuck get boring in the bedroom after all this time The absolutely true answer is that the sex is better than ever

I could attribute my sexual satisfaction to many things overall level of comfort, experimentation with new positions, exciting locations around campus, etc but the true hero here is completely open communication and a thorough grasp of each other’s physical desires By being able to fully express our own sexual wishes and understand exactly what the other partner wants in the sheets, Chuck

‘Tell Me What You Want (What You Really, Really Want)’

and I can ensure that we are both always taken care of to our liking However, getting to the point where we both now know each other’s bodies and likes and dislikes took time and a lot of conversation

Sure, some fortunate women are always confident enough to direct their lover to the right spots the first time

Unfortunately, however, some people (myself included), take a little bit more time to get to a place with their companion where they can clearly express their wants and needs But no woman should have to sit through a round of fingering that feels like a boxing match, or pretend to orgasm after a sleep-inducing round of someone going down on her Identify what you want from your partner and don’t be afraid to ask for it

The best though not always easiest way to do this is verbally During foreplay, whisper in his/her ear, “You know I really love when you ” If he’s already in the right vicinity, it could be as easy as, “Ohhhh yeah I like that” or “Mmm just like that ” A simple, “Yes! Right there!” or “Faster!” doesn’t hurt either Say whatever it takes

to ultimately get the pleasure and end result that you ’ re looking for Reminding a partner while they’re fingering you to give Miss C some love instead of just hammering into the V may feel awkward and demanding, but remember that your partner is there in the first place because they want to sexually please you If speaking during sex isn’t your forte, some gentle steering can often do the trick just as well, if not better I’m not talking about the move where you ’ re making out with a guy and he grabs your head and attempts to shove it down there to blow him, because that’s gross and desperate No, I’m just referring to a slight adjustment for when he’s already in position He thinks he’s really getting you going while fingering you, but is actually just hitting your thigh? Grasp his hand and slowly guide it to make sure he’s hitting the right sweet spot Guy feeling you up like he’s milking udders instead of handling the twins? Take his hands under yours and show him how it’s done

If, for some reason, he takes it the wrong way that you ’ re a girl who knows what you want, he’s a selfish fuckboy and you deserve much better But, assuming he’s a decent human being who cares about your needs and desires, follow these steps and you’ll be on your way to a mutually perceptive relationship like the one Chuck and I have been polishing for years

Dining Guide

I’ m sure you ’ ve noticed an abundance of food trucks both on and around Cornell’s campus My goal is to visit each and to tr y their most popular item, but in this article I decided to focus on just a few that are more accessible to students They are listed in the order I ate at them, not based on quality Each has its own unique culinar y point of view and is able to accomplish something the others can ’ t

Frannie’s

Where: between Sibley Hall and Milstein Hall

When: Monday-Thursday 11:30 a m7:00 p m , Friday 11:30 a m -4:00 p m

Popular items: Korean bulgogi tacos, Korean rice bowls

The first truck I sampled was Franny’s, which is run by the Statler and located near the Architecture school It is fairly n e w, h a

designed so that Architecture and Art students could quickly grab a bite to eat amidst their hectic schedules I was welcomed at the order window with a warm smile by a student who described the type of food she ser ved as “Asian-Mexican fusion ” She proceeded to tell me that a n e w i t e m t h i s s e m e s t e

n Bulgogi Tacos, currently held the title of most popular So naturally, I decided to order them

Let me set the scene: Before me sat three perfectly-sized tacos, each layered with rice, beef spare rib and kimchi, thinly sliced pickles, carrots, cucumber and jicama and garnished with cilantro, all inside a beautiful flour tortilla “Bulgogi” is a beef marinade in which soy sauce, sugar, garlic, sesame seeds and sesame oil are combined and allowed to sit with the beef overnight Franny’s use of this marinade with the ever-so-flavorful beef spare rib made the meat incredibly tender and juicy As I took my first bite, I realized the brilliance of including rice in the taco: I expected taco juice to gush out ever ywhere, but the rice had soaked it all up, allowing me eat semi-cleanly The slight

g else Franny’s has to offer Louie’s Lunch

Where: across from Risley Hall

When: Monday-Friday, 11:00 a m -3:00 a m , Saturday 12:00 p m -3:00 a m , Sunday 6:00 p m -12:00 a m

Popular items: chicken parm, pizza sub, maven

This truck has been feeding freshman on North Campus since 1918 and is wellknown for operating long hours from Monday to Saturday Because of its hours, Louie’s is one of the more popular places on campus to grab a midnight snack and lines can be seen at any point during the day I’ve lost track of the number of times I’ve gone to Louie’s to satisfy a late night french fr y or milkshake craving This truck is also known for having a secret menu featuring options put together by customers (It’s real, but good luck finding it) I was told their most popular items were the c h i c k e n p a r m , p i z z a s u b o r m a v e n

Apparently, the maven started out on the secret menu and was so good that Louie’s decided to move it to the main menu I clearly had to tr y it It turned out to be a sub sandwich with

chicken, lettuce, barbeque sauce and buffalo sauce with spiciness options ranging from PG, R and X to XXX (not for the faint of heart) It isn’t the prettiest thing on the planet, thanks to the sauce stains all over the bun and lettuce oozing out the sides, but just because she isn’t the prettiest girl at the ball doesn’t mean she can ’ t dance After being dealt a rather humbling backhand from the buffalo sauce, the sweetness of the barbeque whispered that ever ything was going to be okay; I call this the “good cop/bad cop ” dynamic The chicken tasted like standard chicken fingers (which I enjoyed) and the lettuce added a little crunch that balanced the o c e a n o f s a u c e s Ev e r y t h i n g w o r k e d together ver y nicely and left me with a dangerous craving for more Though it isn’t the healthiest option, ever y now and then you need to treat yourself to something different and the bold combination of barbecue and buffalo sauces fits the bill

Dos Amigos

Where: the corner of Eddy and Dr yden

When: Thursday-Saturday 10:00 p m2:00 a m

Popular items: Chicki Minaj, steak and mushroom quesadilla

My journey next took me to the streets of Collegetown as I decided to investigate the new Mexican taco truck I had been hearing about Dos Amigos opened this past August and is open late on weekend nights if you ’ re craving a late-night snack It’s a rather large blue truck, with one window for ordering and the other for picking up One of the students who came up with the idea of the truck told me that he “genuinely missed Mexican food, and [the] Mexican food here [is] just not as authentic as [he] is used to ” As a result, he and a few friends got together and started Dos Amigos The student also told me that while the Chicki Minaj was one of the more popular options, he would recommend a steak and mushroom quesadilla for newcomers I ordered the steak, while my friend ordered the Chicki Minaj

The first thing I noticed was the perfect handmade tortilla I was instantly transported back to my childhood, when my abuela would make me tortillas con mantequilla blanca y frijoles refrido

These tortillas were firm enough to h

“We can ’ t be no number one / But we can be the jam”, sings 24-year-old rapper Isaiah Rashad on his new single, “Nelly ” It’s a refrain repeated often throughout the song ’ s three-minute duration and one that aptly summarizes the Chattanooga native’s approach to music He makes low-key, emotive rap that’s stylistically more indebted to Aqueminiera OutKast than any sounds of the West Coast, where he currently resides In 2013, it came as a surprise to many when Top Dawg Entertainment which, at that point, housed only L A -bred rappers Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, Schoolboy Q and Jay Rock announced Rashad as their latest signee A virtual unknown, the young MC assuaged any doubts about Top Dawg’s scouting process with 2014’s excellent Cilvia Demo, a singular work that showcased both his versatility and his chemistry with label-mate SZA

After almost two years of silence, Rashad coasts back into the spotlight on “Nelly,” which features sparse, jazzy instrumentals courtesy of the Antydote, Chris Calor and Jowin The hollow, laggy drumbeat only gains warmth from Rashad’s sing-song flows (reminiscent of perhaps his biggest “hit” thus far, “Heavenly Father”) and comforting vocals As always, his raspy voice suggests a weariness that makes it all the more meaningful when he tries to send good vibes “I can see your pain, hope my voice is helping out, ” the rapper sings on his second verse He’s always had an earnest and almost naïve belief in music’s potential for therapy, and “Nelly” finds him content to be reaching anyone at all Whether it’s a single off an upcoming album or just a loosie, the song is a soothing reminder that Rashad’s still out there making music “Nelly” isn’t flashy or complex, but you’ll have it on repeat anyway

Last time Ms Newsom released an album, I was 14 years old and just recovering from a severe bout of Eminem In truth, it was probably better for me that I discovered her mind-wringing harping a little bit later on in my cognitive development, but the fact that I have never been musically alive in the midst of a new Joanna Newsom release meant that, for the few days after its release, “Sapokanikan” was blaring from my computer speakers ad infinitum The case has been no different with “Leaving the City” (Divers’ second single); in fact, it’s probably even more brilliant than its predecessor In this review I could dive into paragraphs upon paragraphs concerning its metrical complexity, soaring vocal polyphonies or brilliant musical and lyrical juxtaposition between bucolic and urban sounds and imagery But I’ll save that numbing pedantry until after I’ve soaked up Divers in its entirety (Oct 23 is so, so far away) Until then, I’ll just tell whoever’s reading to listen to “Leaving the City” as soon and as often as possible It’s fucking beautiful

We only rip on the bands we love and, as such, I must take Motion City Soundtrack to task for 2015’s Panic Stations The 11-song offering, a project with Dinosaur Jr and Sonic Youth producer John Agnello, lacks the intricacy and vulnerability that endeared listeners to the band’s previous offerings The album shimmers with a silver lining: Frontman Justin Pierre seems reenergized in recent interviews, and with good reason This year marks 10 years since Motion City Soundtrack’s tour-de-force Commit This to Memory, an album that delivered pop-punk canon entries “Everything is Alright” and “L G FUAD ” Furthermore, Panic Stations resulted from fourteen days of furtive recordi n g i n Mi n n e s o t a ’ s Pa c h yd e r m St u d i o , b i r t h p l a c e o f Nirvana’s In Utero among others By all indicators, Motion City Soundtrack should be enjoying a dignified position atop the pop-punk upper echelon Even though Motion City Soundtrack flew through Panic Stations in a burst of energy, the record is anything but inspired The group took up the same skeleton of past records fast, uncomplicated power chords, squealing synths, Pierre’s unadulterated vocals but the songs remain skeletal In pop-punk, lyrics are everything and Pierre long eked out a niche between Pete Wentz’s poetic acuity and Brendon Urie’s pseudo-intellectualism The Pierre who crooned, “let’s get fucked up and die,” however, has disappeared and his replacement sings with an abundance of positivity and inoffensiveness The dearth affects the whole group: The chord progressions impart no emotion and the synthesizer rarely does more than distract The album kicks off with four measures of pure power chords and from there, the group jumps no-holds-barred into “Anything At All ” Musically, the opening track is a promising mission statement The band moves through

many pop-punk tropes in less than three minutes tomtom fills layered on top of guitar tacets, “oh-oh-ohs” on double bass rolls and does so unflaggingly Panic Stations’ second and third tracks, however, comprise its musical peak Motion City Soundtrack reels in the tempo and arrangement to craft “TKO ” As a track, it sounds uncharacteristic for the group, but compelling and catchy regardless The lyrics remain forced Pierre tortures sixteen syllables from the word “ out ” – but the chorus evidences a subtle ear for arrangement The drums nearly drop out of the track while the guitars launch a palm-muted attack from both sides and Pierre even pulls back his pipes on the first refrain The resulting track has some compelling surfer-pop cred, despite its strange appearance on a Motion City Soundtrack album

“I Can Feel You” also excels by the merit of its instrumentation The bouncing, brooding guitar riff and pulsing drumbeat that open the track conjure Forget and Not Slow Down-era Relient k The track’s bridge, specifically, stands out as a high point of the entire album Motion City Soundtrack abandons their short, fast and twee approach for an ebbing vamp of oceanic proportions that drives the song for over three minutes

Just as rapidly as they ventured into creative territory, Motion City Soundtrack unfortunately snaps back into their comfort zone “Lose Control” plods through an utterly uninterested verse, only to tease what could have been a thrashing guitar-and-keyboard duo after the second refrain Just as the guitar gets ready to tear through the track, the instruments drop back to a support role behind Pierre’s vocals “Heavy Boots” features an opening that could’ve been lifted from any Motion City Soundtrack track from the Commit This to Memory period and the song never truly moves off of it

“It’s a Pleasure to Meet You” dredges the absolute bottom

of the album Over a saccharine and jarring chord progression, Pierre layers meaningless encouragement and juvenile cliché The title lyric plays like a non sequitur after the preceding line: “We’ve all had our battles with darkness and shadows/It’s a pleasure to meet you ” A pop-punk bad commending a faceless listener for their perseverance panders just as much as any boy-band telling a listener that she doesn’t know her true beauty A decade later, the intelligent but unpretentious lyrics that drove I Am the Movie and Commit This to Memory have entirely disappeared “Over It” slightly breaks up Panic Stations’ mediocre second half with an overdriven, guitar-heavy chorus and great drumming from recent recruit and former Saves the Day drummer Claudio Rivera Panic Stations’ last track “Days Will Run Away” however, sums up the repressed heart of the album: a love letter to the dying scene Fall Out Boy is making pop hits, Panic! At the Disco is making pop hits, Brand New is making indie rock It rings all too true and way, way too sad when Pierre admits, “Saw the whole scene slowly dissolve/Nobody wins ” It is hard to write about Motion City Soundtrack without writing nostalgically I was in the fourth grade when Commit This to Memory came out, younger even when I Am the Movie brought us “Don’t Call It a Comeback” and “The Future Freaks Me Out ” Motion City Soundtrack’s refusal to leave pop punk for more creative territory or reclaim their hardcore-inspired, smartaleck roots left them holding the bag of played-out tropes and cloying lyrics Their next release, if one ever comes, will hopefully take up the wistfulness of “Days Will Run Away” and spin it into the dark, mature album Motion City Soundtrack may have in them Shay Collins is a sophomore in the College of Arts and Sciences He can be reached at scollins@cornellsun com

Hello, massive and fervent column audience: I know you ’ re probably all here expecting me to talk about something fun, like the politics of feline hook-up culture or the secret world of Insane Clown Posse slash fiction Today, though, I decided to take a relatively brief diversion into a topic that’s, well, a wee bit serious So tune in next week if you ’ re looking for something smile- rather than frown inducing With that out of the way

In the middle of the 18th centur y, Charles Dickens visited the United States, and while in Philadelphia, encountered the Eastern State Penitentiar y Dickens was shocked and appalled by the conditions of a prison known for its focus on rehabilitation Horrified particularly by the torture of solitary confinement, he reflected:

“I believe that very few men are capable of estimating the immense amount of torture and agony which this dreadful punishment, prolonged for years, inflicts upon the sufferers I hold this slow and daily tampering with the mysteries of the brain, to be immeasurably worse than any torture of the body: and because its ghastly signs and tokens are not so palpable to the eye and sense of touch as scars upon the flesh; because its wounds are not upon the surface, and it extorts few cries that human ears can hear; therefore I the more denounce it, as a secret punishment which slumbering humanity is not roused up to stay ” While conditions have certainly improved since the middle of the 19th centur y, Dickens’ statement is a profound indictment of our modern penal system ’ s immorality, and of our unwillingness to improve it Once verdicts are handed down or, as in 97 percent of cases, plea bargains are reached the American prisoner is whisked off into a system that is incredibly difficult to imagine, let alone reform Our

difficulty doing so is what makes imprisonment a “ secret punishment ” Desensitized to statistics and data, and at a physical remove from the visceral experience of daily prison life, we struggle to empathize with those whose humanity is withheld, whose experience of time is as a form of punishment

To be sure, numbers are an important recourse when confronted with something with the magnitude of the American prison system and they are profoundly alarming

The US only has 5 percent of the world’s population, but 25 percent of the world’s prisoners Over 2 million people are imprisoned in U S prisons and jails at the federal,

state and local level That’s almost as many as Russia and China combined Imprisonment rates are particularly grim: The U S imprisons 698 people out of every 100,000 The British are 20 percent as likely to be locked up, while Norwegians are just one-tenth as likely It makes more sense to compare us to Rwanda, which can at least point to its need to punish the perpetrators of its 1994 genocide for its rate of 492 prisoners per 100,000

But, as you probably just realized, numbers often have a way of getting in the way of understanding, rather than guiding it

The human experience, in general but especially in prison, is too complex and too powerful to be reduced to this level of abstraction at least if we want to convince a public to thirst for real change

So, there are a few alternative ways to learn about prison and prisoners One, which I don’t recommend, is to go to jail Another, for those of us who, by virtue of our Ivy League lives, lack direct experiences, is to turn to film, documentary and television to comprehend the depth of the tragedy

For this reason, turning a critical eye to the representation of prison life in our entertainment and media has never been more essential Countless films have attempted to shed light on the experience of prison, with var ying degrees of success

Whether the protagonist-prisoner is drawn in a sympathetic light as in the staple of the genre, The Shawshank Redemption or a more sinister one as with Dead Man Walking, where Susan Sarandon plays murderer-rapist Sean Penn’s nun BFF to the sound of Eddie Vedder crooning there is almost always an impassioned appeal to the viewer’s shared humanity in the face of cold, rational and dispassionate state violence

But, competing for airspace in the American imagination is the mass hysteria of the Reagan era A decade after the beginning of the War on Drugs, terror about rising cocaine usage led to the introduction of draconian sentencing laws on the federal and state level These laws, along with the criminalization of drug use and possession, have contributed to rising incarceration rates to this day

In this era, the cocaine overdose death of Len Bias, a first-team All-American college basketball forward who was selected as the second overall pick in the 1986 draft, was

imprinted into the popular imagination His death ushered in “dramatic new initiatives for dealing with crack and other drugs,” including mandatory minimum sentences and the legal treatment of one gram of crack in the same way as 100 grams of cocaine, according to author Dan Baum Stories can alter the course of history, and not always for the better

Here’s one reason to be (a little) optimistic, though: This week, President Obama appeared on “Fixing the System,” the most recent episode of HBO and Vice’s documentary series After a brief interview with Vice founder and former recipient of David Carr’s ire Shane Smith, the President sat down with a group of nonviolent drug offenders to hear their stories It’s a small gesture that won ’ t fill the painful chasm the penal system has left in the lives of so many Americans, but, just maybe, it is a sign of a larger shift at play For, the more we confront the experiences of those we ’ ve caged away, the closer we inch to dragging ourselves out of this mess

Wom en: Quakers Drop Game To Harvard, See Second Loss

After eight games, the University of Pennsylvania women ’ s soccer team stands at 4-2-2, most recently losing to league opponent Harvard on Saturday

The Quakers earned wins against a strong group of competitors, made up of Seton Hall, Temple, Mount St Mary’s and USC Upstate Besides its loss against the Crimson, the Penn squad has fallen to Clemson The squad’s two ties came against Virginia Commonwealth University and Towson

Despite two disappointing losses, the Quakers stand ahead of where they were at this point in the 2014 season After eight games last year, the squad had only won three and had dropped a total of three as well, tying two in the process The team was able to come out of the season with an 8-5-3 overall record and a 3-3-1 Ivy record, good enough for third place beside Yale and Princeton in the league

Why Athletes Are Role Models: A Response

not our friends, Shane Lewis While I agree with you that an athlete smoking pot is no big deal, society disagrees with us If these athletes are investments with millions of dollars being attached to his or her name, then they should not be tainting their valuable body with detrimental substances We all smoke weed at Cornell That doesn’t make us scumbags, but of course, we are not role models Maybe you and I should burn sometime and discuss the morality of professional athletes I can ’ t speak for you, but if I were a professional athlete, I

would not be seen as “the most morale athlete” in the eyes of media With my Jewish height and build, I’ll never be considered athletic, but I do strive to be a good person

People look past our faults because no one cares The world owes us nothing and in turn, the world does not pay attention to us We admire athletes because in a sense, we strive to be like them We strive to find the euphoria that one experiences in sports and the irrational emotion us fans have towards a

When an athlete does something seen as bad on the scale of morality, I think a small piece of us becomes disillusioned

given player turns us into judgmental beings When an athlete does something seen as bad on the scale of morality, I think a small piece of us becomes disillusioned

When former MLB Most Valuable Player Ryan Braun was caught doping, a little piece of my conscious became disillusioned Maybe I put too much faith in people While athletes are not paid to be role models, they end up taking that stage as one of the more prominent role models in our society

So Shane, I really enjoyed reading your column but I must respectfully disagree with your main point Yes, athletes may appreciate it if we didn’t dismiss them because of a dumb mistake, but being a role model is one side effect that comes with the fame of being a professional athlete Not all athletes are good role models (see Michael Vick), but we ’ re lucky to have a dozen or so that can help steer our moral compass My favorite athlete-role model is Shaq who’s yours?

Men to Face Penn Quakers With Only One 2015 Victory

Red to travel to Pennsylvania after two losses last weekend

After a September schedule filled with nonconference games, the Ivy League season is finally here for Cornell men ’ s soccer (1-7-1, 0-0 Ivy) This weekend, the Red will travel to the City of Brotherly Love to take on the Penn Quakers (1-5-1, 0-0 Ivy) Philadelphia’s nighttime skyline will ser ve as a bold backdrop to the 7 p m Friday kickoff at Penn’s Rhodes Field

The Red is going into this weekend off of a winless pair of games against Hartwick and Buffalo Though both the Red and the Quakers have won only one of their non-conference games, Cornell head coach Jaro Zawislan said his team reads ver y little into non-conference records

“ The Ivy League is a brand new season, ” he said “It doesn’t matter what (our) record was it doesn’t matter what happened until this point ”

Zawislan said the nonconference matches are a “challenging series of games, ” adding that the matches the Red has played so far are not the most important part of the season Rather, his team has been focusing on its own game in September

“ We use the nonconference schedule as preparation,” he said “ We practice styles of Ivy League teams We tested ourselves in nonconference games [with] frequency and quality of games ”

So far this season, the Red has played only three of its nine games at home and has taken on two opponents per week With the start of the Ivy League schedule, Cornell will play exactly half of its eight remaining games at

Iwas almost finished with a column about the sexual escapades of Wilt Chamberlain when I came across Shane Lewis’ column titled “Athletes Are People, Too ” Although I’d love to finish writing an in-depth analysis of Chamberlain’s promiscuity, I just had to respond to Shane’s article Now that we both learned we

could use expletives in our columns, I figured why the fuck not?

To start, I respectfully disagree with you, Shane Athletes are considered role models because they are held to a higher standard We put them on a pedestal due to their extreme talent and determination to find perfection Pete Rose’s ban is from a long-standing MLB statute created by former

Spor ts

Berman Field Aside from a midweek Fall Break match with geographic rival Colgate, the Red will have one game per week from here on out Zawislan believes one game per week means both the players and the coaching staff are more dialed in for each opponent

“[It] gives us more recover y and regeneration for the next game, ” he said, adding that coaches get “ more preparation time” as well

Being prepared for each conference match is important Zawislan pointed out that the Ivy League season is shorter than collegiate seasons in other parts of the countr y As a result, each game counts more towards the standings

Although the Quakers were winless at the time of the inter view (winning later Tuesday night against Saint Joseph’s), Zawislan nevertheless made sure not to discount or underestimate the Red’s weekend opponent

“[They are] ver y well coached,” he said “[They are] still a quality team with quality players These are the most important games for ever y team (in the Ivy League) ”

Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis Gambling was rampant in the early days of baseball and after the 1919 Black Sox Scandal, former circuit Judge Landis restored the public’s confidence in the sport As America’s pastime, cheating destroyed the moral purity of the beautiful sport

The weather forecast calls for cooler weather and ever y soccer field plays a little differently However, Zawislan said weather and playing surface should not be a factor He said he believes that because both teams are going to be subject to the same conditions, these outside variables will affect both teams equally and not have an effect on the game

Zawislan also said he believes the coaching staff and players are looking for ward to their upcoming match for the same reasons, using it as an opportunity to point out that his team is working towards a common goal “ We’re all on the same page, ” Zawislan said “ We are all going to go (there) and be ready and put the proper amount of work [in] [in order to] execute (our) game plan ”

Days are getting shorter and leaves have started falling For the Red and the Quakers, September is over

Let’s appeal to emotion and use the rags-to-riches cliche A vast majority of professional athletes in the MLB, NBA and NFL (sorry hockey, but you ’ re an expensive sport) came from impoverished areas across the world and particularly in the United States If LeBron James isn’t a role model for using his talent to makes millions of dollars and be thought of as the greatest athlete today, then I’m not sure what a role model is In my younger and purer days, I looked to Derek Jeter and Allen Iverson as role m o d e l s , because they were just so visible As we know, Iverson wasn ’ t the best choice for a role model, as evidence by how I turned out I can ’ t help but crack up as I write this Athletes are held accountable to moral actions because they are W h y A t h l e t e s S h o u l

In the modern era, players are scrutinized like none other by the media Given their abilities, platform to voice opinions and high salaries, athletes are role models

The million dollar salaries support this fact We ordinar y people aspire to reach their level of achievement A professional athlete is at the pinnacle of his or her career

I love sir Charles Barkley, but

the NBA royal is wrong in his opinion on the “professional athletes should not be role models” debate Chuck can say he isn’t a role model as much as he wants, but it’s hard to deny the fact that millions of people listen to his words almost ever y night on Inside the NBA on TNT Riddle me this if Charles Barkley is not a role model than why was he extremely vocal during the Ferguson Riots, stating a strong opinion and respectfully disagreeing with his black colleague Kenny Smith, while Ernie Johnson uncomfortably nodded his head Are you really going to argue that these men are not role models when their opinions are valued on aspects outside of sports?

Humans have an irrational tendency to look for guidance in life when insecurity and uncertainty creep up as they always do Being in the media spotlight and displaying some degree of excellence, professional athletes involuntarily steer the moral compass of millions of devout fans Neither Charles Barkley nor Pete Rose are priests, but both men answer to the higher calling of fandom

Where we do agree, Shane, is

on My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy Kanye’s album is nearperfection While I won ’ t be campaigning for Kanye West 2020, both you and I recognize his musical genius Like all celebrities, athletes very much so included, West is a role model because he has reached the greatness in his respective field, much like Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, LeBron James and Tiger Woods However, in Kanye’s case, it is hard to look to someone for guidance who calls himself “ S h a k e s p e a r e in the flesh ” All I can say to Kobe Br yant and Tiger Woods is sorr y I’m sorr y, Kobe, that you were once admired by billions all over the world for your superhuman abilities, only to be vilified and discredited because of one of the worst allegations a public figure can be accused of See, because they are the world’s greatest at what they do, they are role models by default

Being in the media spotlight and displaying some degree of excellence, professional athletes involuntarily steer the moral compasses of millions.

Sizing up the competition | Despite both teams only having one win on the season, Cornell head coach Jaro Zawislan is going into this weekend making sure not to discount or underestimate the Penn Quakers
