Cornell Abroad to Consolidate Grant Applications

Fund, a ne w resource managed by Cornell Abroad, will consolidate the process of applying to five different off campus study grants into one application

The five organizations the Global Encounters Scholarship, the Student

Community Engaged Student Grant, the Einaudi Center Travel Grants and St

Sponsorship are all geared toward

grants, according to Marina Markot, director of Cornell Abroad

“The whole idea is to make it easier for students to access different funding opportunities through one consolidated application process, ” Markot said “The existing funds are coming together,

o n process, common deadline, and coordinating the awarding so we can help as many students as we can ” Nishi Dhupa, executive director of t h e Ma

“It is the one-stop shop where you can apply for the program and also look at the funding.”

International Studies, said the fund is part of a concerted effort to globalize Cornell’s curricula and increase its international presence

“We’ve found that it’s difficult for students to locate funding sources on campus for expensive international trav-

el they know about funding sources in their colleges, but it’s harder to find those elsewhere on campus, ” she said

Dhupa said she hopes the fund will help “ to reach students with limited financial means, to afford them access to these important and meaningful international experiences ” It will function as the primary starting point for off-campus financial assistance, according to Markot

“It is the one-stop shop where you can apply for the program and also look at the funding,” Markot said

Administrators managing the consolidated fund said in a statement that they hope the single application and awarding process will result “in a more efficient, inclusive, and equitable” distribution of funds

Malott Responds to Plagiarism Charge

In view of conflicting opinions and widespread discussion on campus of the “Funny Coincidence” item printed in the Nov 10 issue of “ The New Yorker,” President Dean W Malott last night told The Sun that

address came from random notes in his speech file

The President remarked that the quotation, “which proved to have originally appeared in an address by Dr Harold Taylor of Sarah Lawrence College,” came to his attention in the form of “ some educational handout or filler paragraph in a weekly newspaper which was printed with no reference to source or authority ”

Mr Malott went on to say that “he had never seen Dr Taylor’s speech, so he had no way of crediting Dr Taylor with the authorship of these particular thoughts, which he would of course have gladly done had he known the source ”

Discussion on the issue of Mr Malott’s installation address arose out of the New Yorker article which printed, side by side, nearly identical quotations from an essay by Dr Taylor in the Har vard Educational Review,

printed in 1949, and the Sept , 1951 installation address by Mr Malott

Reached by The Sun yesterday afternoon, a reliable authority at Sarah Lawrence reported that Dr Taylor’s article in the Har vard Magazine was a followup on a speech given at the University of Wisconsin

Later in the year, Dr Taylor used the quotation in question in another speech at Boston University and this in turn was published by a Community Relations Ser vice Pamphlet, a magazine circulated to educational institutions over the countr y

Dr Taylor’s picture was on the cover of the magazine, and he was credited with the authorship of the article

Until last night, President Mallott had refused to give The Sun an official statement “because he felt that there was no purpose to be ser ved by a refutation of the implication that the material had been taken by him from Dr Taylor ”

On Nov 23, however, the Daily Kansan, student newspaper at the University of Kansas, printed an article concerning the incident which contained a statement by Mr Malott

All NYC Public Schools to Teach Computer Science

New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio (D) announced that after 10 years, all public schools in the city will be required to offer some sort of computer science program to students, according to The New York Times The rule will apply to elementary, middle and high schools The stated reason for the requirement is growth in the number of tech jobs which require programming or robotics skills Barbara Ericson of the Georgia Institute of Technology College of Computing told The Times that the biggest challenge in creating a computer science curriculum for the 90 percent of New York City public schools that do not already have classes in the subject is “getting enough teachers who are trained well enough to make it a good introduction to computer science ”

Lambda Chi Alpha House Reopens After Renovation

Following a $2 8 million renovation, the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity will be moving back to their house this weekend

The renovations, which expanded the house size by 40 percent, include a new dining room, gym, basement and four-story addition

The addition contains a two-story reading room, a library and additional bedrooms, according to Patrick Spoth ’17, the fraternity’s house manager Over 250 alumni and community partners, including M&T Bank and Welliver Construction Co , contributed to the fundraising campaign for the renovation project, according to Mark Fernau ’82, Lambda Chi Alpha’s alumni association president

“The project was perhaps the largest of its type in the history of Cornell fraternities,” Fernau said Fernau said the fraternity was motivated to renovate because the house was over 110 years

old and was beginning to show signs of wear and tear

“The brothers decided to create a house that would allow another 100 years of brothers to enjoy the kinds of experiences, camaraderie and growth that the alumni had, but in a 21st century environment,” Fernau said

Bryan Harriott ’16, Lambda Chi Alpha president, said the renovation project was first proposed at the fraternity’s centennial anniversary in 2013

After construction began in the summer of 2014, the brothers moved into the Zeta Beta Tau house on North Campus, according to Spoth

Harriott said the new house exceeded all

expectations

“It has to be one of the nicest and most unique fraternity houses I’ve ever seen, and I consider myself lucky to call it home for the next year, ” Harriott said

This weekend, Spoth said they expect to have the largest homecoming turnout of alumni in recent years as many are excited to see the new house and the results of their contributions

In the future, they would also like to restore the grand staircase that was removed many years ago for fire safety reasons, Fernau added

Attention Student Groups!

C.U. Facility Joins National Network

In the beginning of the semester, student groups can apply for two Corne¬ Daily Sun print adver tisements for general recr uitment when filling out the SAFC application.

Additionall y, ever y event funded by SAFC can also be promoted with two print adver tisements (these do not have to be applied for in the application at the beginning of the semester)

This shaded box is the exact siz e of all SAFC ads

To place an ad ver tisement:

1) Fill out the "Daily Sun Advertisement Authorization" form located on the SAFC website; turn in form to Terry Ector in 520 Willard Straight Hall.

2) Send an electronic file of the ad to advertising@cornellsun.com.

available funds, especially for students who are usually marginalized, according to Markot

“We have the opportunity to be more inclusive of students who are generally underrepresented in these endeavors,” Markot said, “and in fact encourage them through this application to consider these opportunities ”

Markot also said the consolidation will make it easier for the Cornell Abroad department to ensure students receive fair funding proposals

“It will allow us to look at all the students to whom we are awarding [funding] and to make sure that no one gets over-awarded or underawarded,” Markot said

Additionally, because the fund will award grants simultaneously, students will now know the exact funding details of their award sooner than before

“Students will know what they receive well ahead of when they need to commit to their prog r a m s , ” Markot said

“We have the opportunity to be more inclusive of students who are generally underrepresented in these endeavors ”

M a r i n a M a r k o t

The fund is the product of a collaboration between the Global Cornell initiative and the Office of the Vice Provost for International Affairs, Dhupa said

“We have been working on this tool for a year, pulling all participating units together to coordinate their funding, as well as their application review and their awards,” she said “We hope this makes funding easier to find ”

Markot expressed her hope that other Cornell grants would consolidate into the Off-Campus Opportunity Fund Because the website has the capacity to host different applications, Markot said she believes it could also become a place for students to find other sources of off-campus funding

“I am hoping that as time goes by, others would want to join in,” Markot said “It may be a slightly different application, but students could see that there is this opportunity and this opportunity posted, in the same place where students are applying for off campus programs ”

Students interested in applying through the Off-Campus Opportunities Fund have until Oct 1 to submit an application for the fall semester After that, a secondary deadline will open until Nov 1 with significantly reduced amounts of funding available for the remainder of the semester

Zion Hikers Caught in Deadly Flood

ZION NATIONAL PARK, Utah (AP) Zion National Park rangers regularly warn hikers that flash flooding during monsoon season can turn southern Utah‘s beautiful canyons into deadly channels of fast-moving water and debris But dozens of adventureseekers go anyway, eager to rappel down the colorful, undulating sandstone walls

That decision proved deadly for one group of hikers who got trapped by floodwaters in a popular “slot” canyon as narrow as a window in some spots and several hundred feet deep

Six have turned up dead One is still missing

A sudden deluge of rain fueled the flood Monday evening, which “ went from a trickle to a wall” of water, park ranger Therese Picard said Zion officials said the group got a permit to hike Keyhole Canyon early that morning hours before a flash flood warning prompted park officials to close the canyons By that time, park officials say there was no way to reach them in time to alert them to the violent floodwaters coming their way

“Ninety percent of Zion is wilderness,” Picard said “It is not possible to contact everyone ” Six of the hikers were from California and one from Nevada All were in their 40s and 50s

Another hiker who had seen the group reported them overdue about 5:30 p m Monday, right after a fierce storm that dumped more than a half-inch of rain in less than an hour

Rangers who were also dealing with small landslides and other effects of the storm found the group ’ s cars, but did not see any sign of them With darkness falling and the canyon already filling with floodwaters, they decided it wasn ’ t safe to send in rescue crews

The search resumed the next

morning Though the canyon was still inaccessible, teams started following its course and started calling down to the missing hikers with no answer The first body was found near the mouth of the canyon Tuesday afternoon, and a private canyoneering group came across the second an hour later

The flood marks one of the deadliest weather-related disasters at a national park in recent history, park service officials said It evoked memories of a 1997 incident near Page, Arizona, where 11 hikers died after a wall of water from a rainstorm miles upstream thundered through Lower Antelope Canyon, a narrow, twisting series of corkscrew-curved walls located on Navajo land

The deadly events at Zion happened at the same time flash floods tore through a small community on the Utah-Arizona border just south of the park, leaving at least 12 people dead who were in two cars who were swept up Monday by swift water, mud and debris in a canyon

Cre ws including the Utah national guard, a federal task force and local officials are searching a seven-mile length of Short Creek to try and find a boy who turned 6 last month The last body recovered was found 6 1/2 miles from where the two cars, a van and an SUV carrying 16 people, were swept away

Three children sur vived, including a boy who told Utah Lt Gov Spencer Cox that he escaped by cutting through an air bag, climbing out a window and jumping off the roof of the vehicle Cox told The Associated Press that the boy was about 9 or 10 years old and lost his mother and several siblings, who were also in the cars

Bodies recovered Tuesday were found as far as several miles away in the sister towns of Hildale, Utah, and Colorado City, Arizona the home base of Warren Jeffs’

polygamous sect

Hildale Mayor Philip Barlow said the three women who died were sisters: Josephine Jessop, Naomi Jessop and Della Black Josephine Jessop and Naomi Jessop were also sister wives, both married to Joseph N Jessop It’s not uncommon in the polygamous sect for relatives to marry the same man

The names of the children, ranging from 4 to 11 years old, were not disclosed

At Zion National Park, 20 miles north of Hildale, the group of seven had arrived to climb, rappel and swim through a half-mile canyon route that takes from one to four hours to complete

Hikers use climbing equipment to lower themselves into the canyon There are more steep descents on the course, as far as 30 feet down sandstone walls Some rappelling routes end in pools of water where canyoneers unhook their equipment and swim out The canyon walls go as far as the eye can see, and it‘s deep enough to stay cool even in July, Picard said

Zion spokeswoman Aly Baltrus said that some members of the group were new to canyoneering, but they took a class before they entered the canyon

Keyhole Canyon is what canyoneers call a “ rap and swim” canyon, full of a series of drops where hikers rappel down into pools of water, said Coloradobased canyoneering expert Steve Allen It’s considered an entrylevel canyon for people who have some experience but are still new to the sport

But when flash flooding starts, it’s a different story, with narrow crevices filling like a bathtub

“That little bit of rain can turn what was a very comfortable daylong excursion into a horror story, literally in a split-second,” Allen said “There’s no escape routes ”

s Monica vividly narrated to Chandler on Friends, I’d like to explore with you the seven erogenous zones a deeper understanding of female pleasure and the importance of exploring the whole body to truly discover the elusive female orgasm

As she lies on your bed, her back arched slightly, she tilts her head towards you and invites you to join her As you lower your body into hers, she feels your warm breath against her ear as you bite down on it lightly and then slowly trace its outline with your tongue Your cool breath now brushes over it as you begin sliding your fingers down her neck and past her collarbone, tracing its outline You kiss her lips passionately but pull away quickly, as you begin making your way down the side of her neck She tilts her head in the opposite direction giving you more space to explore As you make your way down her chest, you raise your body slightly to expose her now hardened nipples You first caress one slowly with your index finger, drawing circles on its outline with increasing pressure As you look into her eyes and she raises the top part of her body towards you, you lower yourself onto her again, and you slowly move your finger down past her bellybutton, reaching between her parting legs

you reach her most sensitive spot As you kiss her thighs, you slowly begin rubbing on her clitoris with your finger, increasing the pressure and intensity, while altering between a steady circular motion and a more empowered unsteady rubbing You pull away quickly as you begin working your way up her body again continuing to rub

ence can end up far from pleasurable for both parties

There are the people who can ’ t perform under pressure and end up feeling inadequate, and there are the people who don’t even try because the partner ’ s pleasure isn’t that important to them Every once in a while, however, there are the people who really try, and, oh my God, they really succeed Every person is different of course, and even though I’m a fan of different partners for varied sexual experiences, there are perks to having a consistent partner This partner is the one who knows his woman ’ s “multiple g-spots ” the parts of her body that you wouldn’t expect to turn her on, but truly do It’s easy to do it like they do on the Discovery Channel, but it truly gets interesting when we go on to explore the more complex pleasure potential of the human body

You begin teasing her Not for long though, moving your finger back up in the same manner as she groans in disappointment You smile at her as you shift your body downwards, tracing her body outline with your palms She moans with pleasure as you gently push her thighs apart But your tantalizing isn’t over yet Slowly, you make your way up her thighs with your lips, pulling back right before

with you finger as you begin sucking on her neck Her hands are in your hair, pulling you closer as she begins to moan harder and harder Her hands then move down your body and she grabs onto your back and you realize she is getting closer and closer, as you make your way down her body again, kissing her breasts, all the way down until you are between her legs, exploring the intricacies of her essence She’s arching her back now, moaning louder and louder, grabbing onto your hair as she lets out her last excited moan She smiles down at you as she relaxes into the sheets and motions you to join her Turning a woman on can be hard, even without bringing the big O into the equation For some, the pressure of pleasing a woman can be nerve-wracking, and the experi-

Don’t worry though, these zones are actually very similar for men and women, just replace the clitoris with the penis and perineum It’s important to note that each of the erogenous zones are utilized differently in bed for each person (for example, soft nibbling/sucking vs a more aggressive bite) However, most nerve endings are similar between individuals, and you can find some way to stimulate these zones that’ll fit the mood Touch where your partner wants to be touched, when they want to be touched, but never be afraid to experiment, just make sure your partner is on the same page as you

Looking for a quick and yummy weekday meal with your friends? Look no further than Saigon Kitchen Saigon gives typical college students everything they could want in a casual meal: speed and deliciousness Though the restaurant does not take reservations, it manages to seat parties fairly quickly This speedy service allows it to rapidly move parties through their meals; My longest meal lasted 90 minutes (and that was on a packed Saturday night) While I have never tried a dish at Saigon that I didn’t like, my favorites include the shrimp summer rolls and the pho bowls The summer rolls come out almost immediately after you place your order, and the main dishes follow shortly after There’s no need to get dressed up for this restaurant, either come in your post-library sweats or post-workout leggings Saigon Kitchen is the perfect place for a casual catch up with friends

A band faces an existential crisis after the release of every album What next? Fail to maneuver the thin line between staying true to yourself and trying to grow and your jaded fans will turn on you without a hint of remorse Or worse, they’ll just forget about you Oh, so you released an album that was undeniably brilliant? The next one should be even better, right? No one can predict whether the pressure will produce something gorgeous or cause utter disintegration

In the case of the new Beach House album, Depression Cherry, what we have is the latter Singer/keyboardist Victoria Legrand admitted in an interview that during their six month hiatus after touring for their 2012 album, Bloom (considered by many critics and fans to be their finest work), she “didn't feel creative at all I just thought well, maybe I'll never have another musical idea ” Luckily for us, that fear of the unknown did not last She and guitarist Alex Scally have created an artwork which both retains their instantly recognizable, carefully measured dream pop aesthetic, defined by an unhurried pace, lush, haunting melodies, and densely layered instrumentation, while also forging something truly original It is the product of an unassuming musical duo committed to their craft and at the peak of their compositional powers

I was skeptical of Beach House for a while For years, as they continued to grow their audience and refine their sound, I thought of them solely as good background music

Hard to hate, good to play in the haze of a smoke filled room or while trying to take a nap Gentle music Mild

music It was pretty, but I couldn’t help but feel bored I listened to the albums, and after a few spins I would retire them to the vast cavern of nothingness in my mind that is labeled “chill ” Chill is great, but the majority of the time when I listen to music, I want something more visceral I want to be challenged and surprised I want to be transported into the artist’s world So when I put on Depression Cherry, it was more out of a sense of duty than anything else

What I discovered was a work of incredible depth and beauty In the opening song, “Levitation,” Legrand spoke right to my pretentious cynicism “You should see, ” she sings, “There’s a place I want to take you / When the unknown will surround you ” The song offers nothing revolutionary in terms of style or substance, but something about the simple layers of voice, keyboard, fuzzy guitar and drum machine spiraling softly around her ethereal voice is quite touching Like a warm hug when you ’ re feeling blue, the soothing tone elevates and inspires

The entire album, as the title implies, explores the fine line between joy and pain, elation and sorrow The lead single, “Sparks,” employs a fuzzed-out guitar that is reminiscent of the classic Cranberries jam “Zombie ” This is a bit more of an aggressive Beach House then we have seen before Over a heavily droning organ, Legrand explores the ennui and natural cruelty of suburban America Her voice joins with the guitar to embody a bright shining defiance

Just like a spark / And then it vanishes ” Although she knows that this thing she is creating will not last, she has to

try to fill the void

This is her solution to the pain of this world, to create

She understands that life is a cycle of destruction and reintegration, but she has no choice but to give everything that she has In “Space Song,” she asks the listener “What makes this fragile world go round? / Were you ever lost / Was she ever found?” The song employs a shimmering synth background, which evokes the expansive infinity of space Against this background, the central keyboard melody loops and spins around and around, creating a sense of endless cycles of repetition But everything is kept under precise control Just when the astronaut might float away, the synths recede and her voice tugs us back down to earth “Fall back into place / Fall back into place ” Beach House achieves these effects through precision But within that precision lurks a vibrant passion and lust for life There is no better example of this than “Wildflower,” an ode to the wild, unpredictable beauty of nature Synth, drums, guitar and voice all melt into a seamless, psychedelic whole There is “ no better color” humans can create than what can be found in nature, but in her contemplation of a flower’s beauty in the song and the album as a whole, Legrand has managed to create something which will endure and be admired for its own splendor for many years to come

In the years following the suicide of writer David Foster Wallace in 2008, the cult surrounding his name saw a great surge His renaissance ranged from coordinated group readings, to the acclaimed release of posthumous work (including his unfinished novel The Pale King, which went on to become a Pulitzer finalist in a year with no winner), to a curious little volume, Although of Course You End Up Becoming Yourself, by repor ter David Lipsky The piece is a transcription of the tapes from a five-day road trip they took together as Wallace concluded a book tour and Lipsky gathered material for a Rolling Stone piece on him Now, just as the cult has begun to wane, a film adaptation of that book, titled The End of the Tour, has hit the silver screen and is playing at Cinemapolis

In the movie, which stars Jason Segel as Wallace and Jesse Eisenberg as Lipsky, we follow the two writers as they negotiate the uncomfor table par ts they’re supposed to play in this arranged extended inter view Lipsky’s situation is complicated both by the fact that he is a huge fan of Wallace’s writing and that he himself is a writer who recognizes he’s not at the same level as his idol This puts him in a ver y awkward position as he seems to be cour ting a potential mentor and friend at the same time that, as a journalist, he needs to extract as much information as he possibly can in their limited time together

On Wallace’s side, things get even more messy since we ’ re basically dealing with one the most self-conscious writers in histor y and one who at that point had written many a nonfiction piece for venues as varied as Gourmet and Harper’s Magazine Wallace was someone who knew exactly how his inter viewer was going

Tto proceed and also

could after wards turn

out of his mouth into whatever pleased him (

) Bu t Wallace agreed to the

extend the cour tesy of hosting his inter viewer never mind that Lipsky is put up in an

where he sleeps on

books

Wallace is also confronted with the contradictions of promoting himself and helping to build an image that might not be entirely tr ue For a writer whose central theme could be identified as sincerity, it’s ironic to see him having to deal with the various r umors and misconceptions that arise from public exposure and fame James Ponsoldt’s movie doesn’t shy away from approaching this paradox, though, and neither does Wallace, who is able to comment on his own insecurities and human frailty

for sure if he would since the magazine ar ticle ended up being scrapped in the sense that it works as an homage but contributes ver y little to demystifying

Wallace The nice guy with issues we see on screen

The End of the Tour works mostly because it sticks to its subject’s ideal of honesty, presenting a seemingly faithful recreation of the exchanges recorded by Lipsky However, it risks falling into the same trap into which Lispky could have fallen though we’ll never know

(Segel is per fect for the role) is exactly the same character that most readers and fans grasp from Wallace’s real inter views, recordings and his most personal writings The movie succeeds in what it sets out to do, and you will leave the theater feeling satisfied that you ’ ve made a new friend in David Foster Wallace

that It was a few things and I talked to my brother at length about it and he understood too and he always wishes the best for me ”

McCarron, who will report to camp on Sept 24, is excited to get going with his new team, armed with a newfound chip on his shoulder

“Obviously, our senior year didn’t go the way that I wanted,” McCarron said “[Edmonton] looked at

that and they made their decision based on what happened that year and I didn’t have the best year and it was a tough year for the program as well I’m sure that went into that decision But definitely, at the end of the day, it put a chip on my shoulder to hopefully one day play them and make them think they made a bad decision ”

developing as a team It is always a challenge to study an opening opponent because they haven’t yet played any games on the season

“We haven’t been able to see the roster yet so we don’t know which players that were outstanding last year are returning and [which] players have left,” Guccia said “That’s the one uncertainty we have in preparing for the game ”

However, the tendencies of a program generally stay the same and the Red have plenty of history playing the mountaineers

“Defensively and offensively, we ’ ve been focusing on what

-tage, but there were several moments throughout the game when the Red had Binghamton on its heels At the end of the game, the Red had outshot the Bearcats, 10-7 Ultimately, only Binghamton was able to convert on one of its chances Freshman goalkeeper Rhys Moller was able to make several pivotal saves in the first half, but in the second, Bearcat for ward Alex Varkatzas was able to finish a well placed cross After the goal, Cornell’s offense only became more aggressive in creating scoring opportunities, but the Red could not put together a run that ended in an equalizing goal

Junior for ward Jack Ferguson was one of the Red players who came close to creating scoring chances, but could not capitalize When asked how the team would bounce back from the loss,

the junior remained positive

“We’ve really got a talented group of kids, at this point it just comes down to execution, and I think it’s confidence, and hopefully hitting the reset button will do that,” he said

The team has a busy weekend coming up at home, with a matchup on Friday against Duquesne University at 7 p m and another on Sunday against Air Force Academy at 1 p m Despite the team ’ s rocky start, players are staying optimistic

“We can only be sharper from here,” said sophomore for ward Jonathan Collum “ We’re gonna watch the game, study the film, see what we can do better and practice the next few days and really try to kill it so we can execute on it Friday and Sunday and ultimately win the tournament

“We have been focusing on finishing,” Marrero said “Our motto this year is to finish every play ” The team finished 3-4-0 last season but outscored its opponents, 27 3 to 24 6 on average per game The Red last won the league championship in 2006 under head coach Terry Cullen, who currently oversees team operations The Red finished 6-0-0 that season Clearly, winning a championship will require a full team effort

“All 11 on the field have to be on the same page, do their job, play fast and finish,” Marrero said

Mental Illness and Its Silent Sufferers

The moment his name was called, he was ready He had as much size as a stunted Shaq and plenty of potential to be a serviceable NBA big man ESPN thought he would help revive a struggling Knicks team A 2003 ninth overall draftee, 6’9”, 295 pound Michael Sweetney’s behemoth bear hug looked like it crushed David Stern The 20-year-old Sweetney called his dad to tell him the good news Crying on the phone, the elder Sweetney could barely recognize his son ’ s voice trying to fight the tears

Benjamin Denson

The B.D. Report

One month later Sweetney cried again No one was on the other line The overweight power forward constantly ate, stopped working out and never even got close to his potential after the death of his father just one month after Sweetney was drafted

Never able to get into “athletic shape,” he floundered through his first few years on the Knicks and then was shipped off to Chicago for a few years After that he played in China, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Uruguay, finishing his career with the Guayama Wizards of the Baloncesto Superior Nacional

The Wizards give out free chimichangas every Tuesday if a player scores at least 50 points No chimichangas were ever given cause of Sweetney

Between playing for the Knicks and losing his dad, Sweetney was in a deep, dark hole of grief Maybe he was too paranoid to succeed? It was a kind of grief that spawns obsession Such a shame, all that mental energy escaped him, and instead of using it as an athlete, he let it eat up his ego As any Shakespearean tragedy plays out, Michael Sweetney was doomed from the first act

“I just never put myself in position I’m always late,” Sweetney told the Chicago press while he was on the Bulls

Still a taboo topic in the sports universe, mental illness is often overlooked or misdiagnosed as a physical limitation Bearing in mind the massively expensive contracts that come with elite talent, it makes sense that owners and general managers alike look for an exact cause and solution to problems with their investments (i e players) With all mental illness being intangible, there is no empirical way to gauge the phenomenon and in a business enveloped with numbers, it’s hard to sell much of anything that isn’t attached to a box score

Make believe you ’ re a Knicks fan (I’m so sorry) in 2003 and realize that your team just drafted a Top-10 player in one of the greatest drafts in NBA history (see Carmelo Anthony, Lebron James and Dwayne Wade) In typical Knicks fashion, the pick was a bust Now you have Sweetney, along with Isaiah Thomas, as representatives of the Kick’s futility throughout the past decade As a tender fourth grader, I can still remember scoring countless dou-

ble-doubles with Sweetney in ESPN NBA 2k4 further evidence of an extreme draft bust

It perplexes me that sports are used as a mask for psychological illness The embattled, blue eyed, melancholic offensive lineman is “indefinitely sore ” and he will never be “depressed due to concussion induced mental illness ” Being one of the last progressive foregrounds on social issues, the sports world has not yet caught up to our society ’ s view of mental illness

About a decade before Sweetney’s saga, an NBA player named Luther Wright shared an almost identical story A 7’2” center who played one seasons for the Utah Jazz in the 90’s, the tragic Seton Hall alum’s career was derailed due to bipolar disorder

“At the college level, that’s your proving ground There’s no room for any type of diagnosis for mental health issues because that would put up a red flag and maybe block you from going to the next level,” Wright wrote in his memoir, A Perfect Fit “I don’t think they would even recruit you if they knew you had some illness or some mental health issues, that you were mentally incapable of performing at the highest level ”

Can you see yourself being in prime shape, trying 100 percent every single day and having your job security based on how well you perform while losing control of your mind? A beautiful mind is often tortured and athletes are no exception

The blame lies on ingrained cultural norms Owners

McCarron ’15 Signs With Penguins AHL Af liate

John McCarron ’15 admits that his senior hockey season at Cornell did not go the way that he had hoped Last year, the Cornell hockey team posted the program ’ s worst record ever under the watch of head coach Mike Schafer, exited the ECAC tournament in the first round and failed to generate anything resembling an offensive

attack

Despite this, many members of the 2015 senior class found success after the final buzzer of the season rang Cole Bardreau ’15 signed with the Philadelphia Flyers as an undrafted free-agent Joakim Ryan ’15 signed with the San Jose Sharks, who drafted him in the seventh round in the 2012 draft Joel Lowry ’15 signed with the Los Angeles Kings, who drafted him in the fifth round Jacob MacDonald ’15 signed with the

Brothers on ice |

Former Cornell hockey player, John McCarron ’15, chose not to play professional hockey in Montreal where his brother on an AHL team

Elmira Jackals of the ECHL McCarron, the captain of the Red for his junior and senior seasons, was without a pro contract in hand until Wednesday morning, when he signed a one-year deal with the WilkesBarre/Scranton Penguins, the AHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins

“I wanted to be a part of [playing professional hockey] too, ” McCarron said “I didn’t want to join the real working world yet ” The road to the deal with the Penguins, however, did not come without its bumps

The Edmonton Oilers, who drafted McCarron in the sixth round in 2012, could not come to an agreement with McCarron on a deal

“I didn’t feel like [Edmonton] was giving me a fair opportunity there,” McCarron said “They offered me a contract earlier on in the summer It was a lowball offer and I felt kind of disrespected, to be honest It happens a lot They didn’t need my type of player, so they’re not going to waste their assets on me and I didn’t want to waste my assets on them either It’s a mutual decision ”

McCarron, who had four goals and eight assists in 2014-15, had to wait until Aug 15 before he was released by the Oilers and was allowed to pursue a contract with another organization At the end of the day, McCarron had to decide between an offer

Red to Open Seven-Game Season

There are no playoffs in college sprint football, so championships are won during the regular season With no end-of-season goal, sprint football teams must constantly focus on the present, with each game in the seven-game season essential for the team ’ s success

Most sports teams would take a season opener as a chance to test strategies, experiment with a completely new lineup and attempt to establish positive momentum for the rest of the season However, in sprint football, the outcome of this game could decide a team ’ s end-of-

season fate Ever y sports team stresses the importance of treating each game with equal importance but in sprint football, this is actually required

“Every game is as important as the next In order to win the championship, you basically have to win every week ”

The Cornell sprint football team opens its season at Mansfield University this Saturday The Red defeated Mansfield, 38-21, to end last season and continue its domination of the Mountaineers The Red is undefeated against Mansfield, however, winning is never a guarantee

“You play each other once and the team with the best record is champion,” said Cornell sprint football head coach Bart Guccia

“We approach them as a very tough opponent because they have some very gifted athletes,” Guccia said “They have [been] steadily improving every year so we expect it to be a tough game and hopefully we don’t make a lot of mistakes and we come out victorious ”

The Red actually was down after the first quarter last year against Mansfield and barely scraped out a victory two years ago on a touchdown at the end of the fourth quarter

“This game is extremely important, ” said senior offensive captain Trevor Marrero “It sets the tone for the whole season and we want to start it off on the right note ”

The team has been working hard at practice over the last couple of weeks, studying Mansfield’s strengths and weaknesses and

from the Stockton Heat (the AHL affiliate of the Calgary Flames) the St John’s Ice Caps (the AHL affiliate of the Montreal Canadiens) and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins

“I wanted the best opportunity to play and move into the NHL Scranton/WilkesBarre gave me the best opportunity,” McCarron said “I had a couple of offers My brother is in Montreal and [on] their AHL team, St John’s I had an offer there, but I didn’t want to be the other McCarron, so to speak, because my brother was a firstround pick there It was a hard decision not to play with him, although I would’ve loved to have done that ”

McCarron’s brother, Michael, was a 2013 first-round pick of the Canadiens and will likely get a shot at the NHL this upcoming season St John’s location in Newfoundland and the fact that he might not be playing with his brother for long played major roles in McCarron’s decision to sign with the Penguins

“I wanted to make a name for myself Obviously, I would’ve loved to have played with my brother ” McCarron said “Just a multitude of things, and the Canadian dollar is pretty low right [now] and taking finance at Cornell, I kind of understand

Booters Lose by One Against Binghamton

As the clock wound down in the last minute of the Cornell men ’ s soccer team ’ s home opener against Binghamton, the focal point of the action sat on the edge of Binghamton’s penalty box The Red kept Binghamton on its feet for the last few minutes of the match, trying to hammer home the shot that would finally hit the back of the net Sadly, once regulation was over, the scoreboard reminded the home crowd of a dull reality

the only goal scored was Binghamton’s, putting the Bearcats up, 1-0, and giving the visiting team the win

The Red (0-4, 0-0 Ivy) entered the game coming off of a tough start to the season after dropping its first four games

However, when the whistle blew to start the match on Tuesday night, Cornell looked like a strong team Balanced midfield matchups kept both Binghamton and Cornell from gaining too much of an advan-
