Univ. Of cials Talk Sexual Assault, Tuition At Assembly Meeting

President David Skorton and Susan Murphy ’73 Ph D ’94, vice president for Student and Academic Ser vices, addressed various student concerns including tuition increase and sexual violence at Thursday’s Student Assembly meeting

During the meeting, Skorton said the University had “ a whole team ” working on preventing sexual violence on college campus

According to Skorton, Senator Claire McCaskill (D-N Y ) invited Cornell Police Chief Kathy Zoner to a roundtable discussion in June He added that the discussion emphasized the importance of victims coming for ward about assault

“Sometimes it’s ver y hard to come for ward in this area, ” he said “Sometimes the person involved might be a friend I need to work on hearing these issues more ”

According to Murphy, a new requirement that ever y incoming student and staff member be educated about sexual assault will likely be implemented in the next year

She also said a discussion needs to happen on campus about what consent means

C.U. Students Use App to ‘Yak,’ Gossip

Yik Yak app enables Cornell community to anonymously create, view posts

Cornellians say Yik Yak the social media app that allows users to anonymously create and view posts is maintaining a strong presence around campus as a gossip medium, despite national concerns about its use for cyberbullying

Yik Yak co-founders Tyler Droll and Brooks Buffington

who graduated from South Carolina’s Furman College in 2013 said in an interview with The Sun that the app is “the virtual version of a city’s central plaza or campus bulletin board ”

“Until now college students haven’t had a way to communicate with their whole campus, ” Droll and Buffington said “An alternative to other social apps, Yik Yak provides a highly local forum for anyone to post about events or news in their immediate area ”

Posts on Yik Yak called “yaks” are anonymous and visible only to other users within 1 5 miles of the poster, according to Droll and Buffington

Some Cornellians say that college users take advantage of the app to post gossip and negative comments about their peers, especially those involved the Greek system, according to Kyra Visnick ’17

Visnick said she thinks the app is used primarily as a “ gossip medium” that targets certain campus groups

“Yik Yak started out as a pretty harmless, funny app, but as it gained popularity, it started to pinpoint certain people and became a way to target different groups or organizations on campus, ” Visnick said

She added that a lot of the content on the app consists of

Greek organizations criticizing one another

“Most of the content on Yik Yak now is different Greek organizations pointing out why other [fraternities] or sororities are worse than they are, ” Visnick added

Michaela Elliott ’17 said she thinks that the amount of gossip on Yik Yak has decreased this school year

“I feel like more people talked trash about the Greek system on it last year than they do this year, ” she said

Elliott added that she believes Cornell’s yaks are witty, in comparison to those from her hometown

“Where I am from, people trash talk specific people all the time [on Yik Yak,] which isn’t funny,” Elliott said “Here [at Cornell], most of the yaks are witty and not mean to individual people ”

Instead of personal attacks, most posts are “just funny stuff that people are Cornell can relate to, ” Elliott said

One post from Thursday afternoon read, “After a rough freshman year and debating whether I should transfer or not, I’m glad I stayed in Cornell ”

Cameron Pritchett ’15, president of the Cornell Interfraternity Council said the large social influence of the Greek system comes with responsibility, with regards to using the app

“Fortunately or unfortunately, the Greek system is often a vehicle to popularize ideas and concepts across the entire campus, ” Pritchett said

Additionally, founders Droll and Buffington emphasized the local focus of the app Though the app is not the only anonymous social sharing app, it is “unique” for its potential to communicate with people locally

“Yik Yak is the social messaging app for hyper-local engagement, ” said Droll and Buffington According to the founders, the app provides users with “ an avenue to engage ” with social communities in their immediate vicinity

Students at high schools and colleges across the country have been using Yik Yak since its launch in November

The app drew attention recently when a student at Emory and Henry College posted a death threat directed

towards freshman students on the app late Tuesday night

The student, Charles Wygal, surrendered himself to authorities on Wednesday, according to News 5 WCYB

Wygal has been charged with a misdemeanor for using a computer to harass or threaten another person and could face up to a year behind bar raising national concerns about the apps use for cyberbullying, according to WCYB

Students: New Food Truck Becomes Popular Lunch Destination

the

food

dining destination, according to Bethany Larson ’14, manager of the truck

The truck located near Milstein Hall opened on Aug 18 and began serving an influx of

new customers once the fall term started, according to Larson She added Franny’s receives the highest amount of traffic during the lunch hour

“During lunch we always have a

huge rush [Business] is good,” she said “We usually run out of quite a few things ”

The food truck serves a wide variety of dishes with an asian flair, including an Indian-inspired dosadilla, a Korean rice bowl, a Thai noodle bowl and Vietnamese iced coffee

The truck is open from 10:30 a m to 9 p m with a break during the middle of the day, Larson said She added the reason for this break is because Franny’s is still trying to organize themselves

“We’re still trying to get situated and work through a few things,” she said “For instance, transportation [is] a little bit difficult with the East Avenue [construction] ”

Larson went on to explain that the truck has been in the works for about three years and was designed and built by architecture students

At first, the plan was to have a Mexican themed truck, but this plan was abandoned and Statler was asked to help

“At the last minute, [the architecture students] asked Statler to run the truck and come up with a menu The theme is a Pan-Asian and Mexican fusion,” Larson said

“For example, the Dosa-Dilla is a cross between a dosa and a quesadilla; it’s actually one of the favorites here ”

Yang Liu grad said she was content with the quality of the food

“I’m pretty satisfied with the service, and they’re very fast,” she said “I wouldn’t say they’re very delicious, but for a food truck, they’re okay ”

However, Liu also said that the menu lacked diversity, saying she was disappointed with the amount of food available

“They could do something to improve the variety of the menu, ” she said “And actually, my three friends also wanted rice bowls, and they’re already out it’s only 6 pm ” Liu added that she believes the food truck with be particularly popular amongst architecture students as a result of its location near Milstein Hall

“This is good for community planning because this food truck can attract a lot of student from Sibley and other buildings to come eat here,” Liu added

Murphy: C.U. Needs

To Address Consent

ASSEMBLY

Continued from page 1

“Is consent yes, or is consent the absence of no?” Murphy said “I think we have a lot of work to do as a community to address that ”

At the meeting, Skorton added leaders in higher education have not done enough to curtail large tuition increases in higher education For the 2014-15 academic year, tuition for most undergraduates increased by 3 26 percent

“We’ve failed to get [the tuition level] where it needs to be,” he said “[At Cornell], we ’ re continuing to use a high-tuition, high-aid model, and continuing to raise and reallocate funds very aggressively for student financial aid

Despite the University’s progress with increasing financial aid with tuition increases, Skorton said there is still much room for

improvement

“We’re better than we used to be, but still not good enough,” Skorton said

Skorton and Murphy were also questioned by students about the high price of living off-campus and whether more undergraduate housing options would come available in the next few years ”

In response, Murphy said that the administration is planning to focus its funds on improving the quality of graduate student housing

“The University is not in a position to take on additional borrowing,” she said “Our most pressing need is the replacement of the Maplewood residences for graduate students Those residences need to come down in the next 12 to 18 months ”

U.S. Gov’t Launches Ferguson Investigation Hillary Clinton Talks Climate Change

WASHINGTON (AP) The Justice Department launched a broad investigation Thursday into the police department in Ferguson, Missouri, following the shooting last month of an unarmed black 18-year-old by a white police officer

The investigation, which is separate from an existing federal probe into the Aug 9 shooting of Michel Brown, will look for patterns of discrimination within the predominantly white department and focus on how officers use force, search and arrest suspects, and treat inmates at the city jail The police department said it welcomed the investigation

In announcing the action, Attorney General Eric Holder, who visited the St Louis suburb two weeks ago, said he heard repeated concerns from community members about general police practices and a lack of diversity on the police force That experience influenced the decision to seek a wide-ranging probe into the department, he said

Doctor Who at 50: Is It Still the Same Broom?

Another day, another Doctor That is how the saying goes, isn’t it? Over across the ocean in his funny little blue box, our wonderful Doctor has died once more, this time on a planet called Trensalore Last Christmas we got to see Peter Capaldi, the thirteenth Doctor (if we count the War Doctor), take up the mantle At the time, of course, the only thing we knew about him was that he did not like the color of his kidneys On August 23, the mad man in a blue box returned Inside a dinosaur Later, he climbed inside a dalek I’m already sensing a pattern I’m getting ahead of myself, however The first episode of a new Doctor is crucial With Christopher Eccelston we were treated to an disinterested Doctor, marching about with purpose Tennant gave us his “ very Arthur Dent” entrance: Saving the world in a bathrobe, full of quips and Lion King references Matt Smith, in his debut, crashed the TARDIS, demonstrated a new level of physical comedy (e g throwing a plate of bread and butter out the door like a Frisbee) and selected his first glorious bow tie

Peter Capaldi came tumbling out of the TARDIS rattling off the names of the seven dwarfs and hitting on a Tyrannosaurus rex He was also confused by the concept of “bedroom ” As with Tennant’s appearance, the writers placed the new Doctor among a cast of preestablished characters to stabilize the audience In this case: Clara (his current companion), Madame Vastra (a female homo reptilia living in Victorian London), her wife Jenny and Strax (the Sontarian comedic relief ) The giant dinosaur marching around the Thames is killed quickly upon her entrance to London leading us to the villain of the episode, a cyborg harvesting humans to power itself and its ship Very Girl in the Fireplace in fact the ships are sister ships The Doctor’s inability to remember Madame Pompadour and his experiences upon the ship are a source of amusement for fans who recall the fabulous episode where Tennant jumped a horse through a mirror

First, the great things about the series premiere Peter Capaldi, as a seasoned actor, seems to already be seizing the role He is lending the Doctor more of a cranky and confused persona than the past two actors His performance and persona is a departure from Matt Smith s high energy, quirky alien As much as I adore Matt Smith, Capaldi is a refreshing new Doctor, he is bringing some of the old school Doctor back, departing from the younger crazier Doctors as of late Cold and running free in an alleyway, the Doctor contemplates

The “#fAtalfinale” has come and gone and it was fatal as promised! but it wasn ’ t one bit of fun We’re expected to latch onto yet another lead on who the real “A” might be Alison (Sasha Pieterse), again (she was the original bet, remember?) we ’ re expected to believe that she’s not just a mean girl but a “fullon socio” and that she assembled her friend group based on what personality traits she lacked and they symbolized (“the loyal one, the admiring one, the smart one, the compassionate one”), so as to most effectively fuck with them and most mind-blowingly, we ’ re expected to be shocked when the one person (Janel Parrish) who has the evidence that could unravel the mystery and end the series meets her untimely death at the hands of a hooded, shadowy, noface

It’s a tangled web Marlene King has woven, and even for the profoundly dedicated it has become a little too much to keep track of this season saw random characters, unmentioned since sea-

his new face and asks the hobo he finds among the bins, “Have you seen this face before?” Peter Capaldi, of course, has already been a supporting character on an earlier episode of Doctor Who In The Fires of Pompeii, Capaldi played the head of the family whom the Doctor interacts with (he purchased the TARDIS from a vendor) and is saved from the volcano Now, Moffat isn’t ignoring this fact He is using the fact that Capaldi has already been on the show, suggesting that the Doctor imitated a person from his past in his regeneration in order to tell himself something This is, hopefully, going to be a plot point that comes up again

The internal reflection continues, making the main villain of the episode a metaphor for the show itself The creature continues to rebuild itself, replacing both human and robotic parts During their final confrontation, the Doctor confronts the cyborg demanding, “Question: You take a broom, you replace the handle and then later, you replace the brush And you do that over and over again Is it still the same broom? Answer: No, of course it isn’t, but you can still sweep the floor, which is not strictly relevant Skip that last part ” While this is an apt question to ask of the robot, it is also an apt question to ask of the show: It has been 50 years since the first Doctor Every few series he changes his face and personality In between, his companions come and go Even the TARDIS itself, the one true constant, changes its “desktop” every once and a while This episode is demanding of itself whether or not it is, in fact, the same show featuring an old man alien and his granddaughter with a spaceship stashed in a junkyard

over again the episode there was a giant neon sign saying, ‘LOOK he’s not that old He’s cool too!’ He climbed out a window, rode a horse, and jumped in a lake They even resorted to having Matt Smith make a cameo and essentially say, “Hey this is still me This Doctor and I are the same character You should keep watching ” If you are one of the fair weather fans who only watch for the young Doctors like Tennant and Smith you shouldn’t be watching the show anyway Moffat didn’t need to pander to that brand of fan Matt Smith’s Doctor had a beautiful end They should have let him rest in peace, not dragged him back for a crappy cameo

Now, for some of the problems with the new episode Moffat is a hit or miss writer Some days, he crafts the most beautiful mindbogglingly horrifying episodes you could possibly imagine For example, Blink “The Angels Have The Phonebox” I still have that on a t-shirt Yet, as of late, Moffat has a tendency to have fabulous ideas and not see them to their fruition The events on Tresalore felt rushed and off-putting Matt Smith’s final goodbye was amazing and heart-breaking, however This first episode seemed to one of Moffat’s misses First, he is so used to writing for Matt Smith, he seems to be having trouble completely abandoning that crazed dialogue Some of Capaldi’s dialogue in the series premiere felt like it wasn ’ t meant for this Doctor Capaldi handled it well, but, if this Doctor is going to succeed, Moffat needs to adjust his writing style

My biggest problem, however, was how much the episode tried to convince us that Capaldi is going to be a good Doctor Over and

The second episode, aired last Saturday, gives me more confidence in the new series Capaldi seemed settled in his role as Doctor and, now that the whole Doctor/Clara coupling has officially been nixed, a new potential boyfriend for Clara has been introduced: Danny Pink Plus, the conflict and rejection of the soldier character in this episode is setting up a nice dichotomy between Danny and the Doctor I sense an awesome new companion in the works

And finally, the psycho-bitch lady with the tea Who is she? Why does she keep hanging out with dead people? And why does she think that the Doctor is her boyfriend?

Series Eight, ladies and gentlemen, who’s ready for the next adventure? *Cue new Intro song*

sons one or two, called back with implied significance that most viewers can ’ t possibly claim to remember, we ’ re on the tenth alleged reveal of the mysterious “A” (Noel, Lucas, Mona, Toby, Melissa, Sasha, Ezra, Paige, Mrs DiLaurentis, Allison did I miss any?) and Aria and Ezra have declared and undeclared their sickening statutory-rape love for each other too many times to count

Perhaps the most interesting thing the show tried to do with its last few episodes was create a dichotomy between Rosewood s often corrupt, apparently uneducated police force and Spencer’s (Troian Bellisario) fresh-out-of-the-Academy boyfriend, Toby (Keegan Allen) I don’t know, something about America’s complicated relationship to the police, or whatever To be honest, I’ve always felt that the police in this show would be a lot less unfriendly if they were included in some of the girls’ vigilante police work

This all comes after a season of disappointing, after-school-special sub-plots (Hanna is an alcoholic for three episodes? Spencer is a drug addict for four?), unnecessary swapping and un-swapping of sex partners (“bed buddies,” as Mona calls them) who have no personality or plot-related purpose and ridiculous reminders that these girls have been in high school, hunted by a creep in a sweatshirt forever (their Senior year talk of SATs and college admissions has been going on for three seasons)

The fall of Pretty Little Liars smarts because it has been an interesting, complicated and beautifullyorchestrated suspense/horror series In January 2013, The Atlantic credited it with “reinventing the slasher” with a slow, deep tension,” and in January 2014 the same lauded it again for destroying the insidious “ mean girl” trope by “remind[ing] viewers that there’s overlapping territory between ‘ mean girls’ and ‘nice girls’ and that cliques aren ’ t always forces for evil ” I don’t want to say that earnest advocacy for the merit of a television show directed primarily at the female 13-24 demographic constitutes putting one ’ s neck

on the line for a publication like The Atlantic but you know, it does (the injustice of which is a topic for another day)

Pretty Little Liars was a c o m p l i c a t e d whodunit, a rare instance of a p p o i n t m e n t television in the era of torrent and DVR and a prolonged horror story that involved none of the gratuitous sex (or more importantly, objectification), needless gore or head-spinning body count of the cheeseball scary movies that these teen viewers have to duck into after buying a Monsters University ticket Obvious comparisons were to Twin Peaks and Desperate Housewives, not to any of PLL’ s pandering semi-soap ABC Family peers I used to say that I only watched this show to keep up with trends in nail polish and alternative legwear And I used to be kidding! What happened to the perfect reinvention of genre fiction for a new generation? What happened to Troian Bellisario’s Emmy? Why did the failure of Ravenswood mean that we had to get Tyler Blackburn back as a whiny do-nothing drunk?

Just some a handful of the questions that will inevitably be dragged out over 100 more episodes of mediocre telivision

I Don’t Understand Women and Movies Aren’t Helping

Agreat character is an interpretation of its author It is a representation of the author’s most fascinating qualities, placed in a situation that showcases these qualities, for better or worse It is the reassembling of the id, the ego and the superego, screaming out from pen to paper, insecure and begging the world for acceptance

Last semester, I took a screenwriting course

The first exercises we were assigned asked us to create characters sympathetic, interesting, unique Characters that the audience would want to know about

I exclusively wrote about myself

One day, we were given a prompt that did not allow me to write about the gun-slinging, toothpick-chewing, hyper-cynical cowboyninja-assassin that lays dormant in the depths of my soul

“I want you to write a protagonist who is your polar opposite ”

It is one thing to write a character who is a product of yourself That kind of introspection is relatively easy and rewarding What do I like about myself? What don’t I like about myself? How can I focus on these to make an interesting character?

Toss that in the oven real quick, and we ’ ve got something to work with

But considering what you aren ’ t that is a whole different beast

How do you approach that character? What aspects of your inner self to you choose to counter? Which really make you, you? How do you feel about that character? Is he your archnemesis? Or your evil twin?

At the core of my being, who am I, and what is the exact opposite of that?

For starters, mine was a girl

The character I wrote was the most shallow,

two-dimensional and stereotypical one I wrote the entire semester But it was not for a lack of effort I really did try to make her into a complex and fascinating character

And to be clear, the problem at this point was not that this character was supposed to be my polar opposite No, despite my existential crisis (imagine John Malkovich in the Malkovich Portal), it was something else from the get-go

The problem was that I hadn’t the slightest clue how to write a female character What does she think? What does she do? What are her hobbies? Where are her priorities?

You have to wonder how many male writers have run into this very same problem How many have tried to write a script with a female lead that was just was not very good not because it had a female lead, but because the writer was simply too ignorant to write a good one?

I’m sure many of you have heard of the Bechdel Test Inspired by a comic strip written by Alison Bechdel, it tests films for gender represen-

tation by asking three questions: Does the film 1) have at least two named female characters? If so, do they 2) speak to each other 3) about something other than a man? A film that can check off these three boxes passes the Bechdel test

In a database of over 5,000 films, only 55 percent of them satisfy all three requirements How many of these do you think pass the test while

adding real emotional depth to the characters, rather than a fleeting instance of interaction?

If I had to guess, I would say maybe half

And when only a quarter of a boy’s media exposure includes a strong, complex, independent female character with significant screen time, it makes sense that male writers would have trouble writing a female character

(Or maybe I’m just a bad writer But at least you ’ re still reading, right?)

Last April, Aaron Sorkin faced criticism for his response to a question about the disparity of male and female roles In his rambling response (ironic coming from a guy whose characters are almost always painfully quick and witty), he basically concluded that when it comes to scripts with multidimensional, interesting female leads, “there just needs to be more ”

In Hollywood, roughly 90 percent of writers are male These men grow up in a media world where 90 percent of what they are exposed to are male perspectives

Now imagine we lived in a vacuum, where all writers wrote male and female driven scripts at an equal rate (twist they don’t) Would it really be surprising that the female half of the scripts written by men who are so rarely exposed to complex, dynamic female characters are, well, bad?

I argue that the fact that female characters are so underrepresented in the media is, to an extent, an issue that is causing itself

Perhaps it is the current lack of female leads that is preventing our male viewers from really understanding the intricacies of a female perspective in reality and in the media

Because of this ignorance, men are not writing good scripts with female leads, and these bad scripts are not being made

This lack of compelling female leads from male writers is then preventing female leads from becoming more prominent in the media, starting the vicious cycle all over again

So, how do we solve the issue? Well it starts with the statistic I mentioned earlier that 90 percent of writers are men The first step is changing the industry culture and getting more women involved in writing, character creation, etc Hopefully the success and fame of talented female writers such as Tina Fey, Diablo Cody, Jennifer Westfeldt, Nora Ephron, will convince potentially-sometimes-maybe sexist film executives to give more female writers a real shot shot

Another good sign is that many female-driven scripts seem to be “bridging the gap ” between interests Look at the wild commercial success of neck-breaking, check-banking actionfilms with female leads, such as The Hunger Games It seems that we are slowly, yet surely, straying away from the idea of “chick flicks” and are finally getting more female-driven scripts that appeal to both sexes

Are women becoming more drawn to the high-paced and explosion-laced films that traditionally have sated the appetite of men? Are men becoming more willing to seek out these films, in spite of (or because of ) the novel female lead? Or a little bit of both? And is this action genre the first baby step toward making men appreciate interesting/complicated/strong leading ladies?

Maybe I sure hope so

Let me think on it a bit, and I’ll get back to you once I find that needle in the crapstack

A Psychological Perspective On Crime Against Women in India

Amid empty talk of empowerment of women, rapes have become a routine affair in India, with women being regularly targeted

If on the one hand it is “honor killing” against girls seeking to assert their independence in their personal lives, on the other it is the wanton outrage of modesty with no counter-action from the state or the society at large Instances of women resisting rape and then getting disfigured with their nose, hands or other body parts chopped are not few and far between Some are reported but a large majority goes unnoticed

Women’s safety remains a pressing issue in India Far from decreasing, reported rapes and physical violence against women is on the rise Given the sheer number of sexual violence cases, there seems little point in denying that it has become a deep-rooted and pervasive problem

A steep decline in the quality of governance, proportionate rise in public inertia and self-centered attitude or simple indifference of the public has made matters worse for women But what is the reason behind such a significant increase? Most blame sexual repression, while others think rural-to-urban migration is the culprit Both are equally significant reasons India is in the middle of the largest migration in history from rural to urban This rapid shift has led to a major cultural chaos

India is undergoing the rapid breakdown of its age-old caste system and of traditional social mores Interestingly, sociologists claim that the new India is undergoing a sexual revolution of sorts, where an entire generation of educated women now have a say in who they marry and what they choose to do with their lives In the long run, this kind of social change is positive and welcomed; in the short run, it has led to uncertainty about the boundaries between class and gender and created the space for sexual violence, solely because the concept of what it means to be a man in India is also changing, bringing in its wake expressions of sexual violence wrapped with feelings of displacement and powerlessness

To add the icing on the cake, India’s male-female ratio is one of the highest in the world The systemic brutality against females has, over a period, led to an imbalance in the male-female ratio (877 women against 1,000 men) High male-to-female ratios have historically been correlated with an increase in the rate of violence In China, a skewed malefemale ratio led to higher rates of crime, including sexual crime, against women The thinking is that young, unmarried males lack the stable social bonds that keep them from committing violent crimes These low-status young adult males often play a crucial role in instigating violence within societies

In India, too, sociologists have found a strong connection between male-female ratios and the increase in violent crime rates Traditionally, whenever women outnumber men, there is a shift in the values towards liberalism On the flipside, when there is an excess of men, marriage is generally revered and values remain conservative Quite simply put, when men, who traditionally have had more power in society, have more women to choose from, they are more able to set the rules for women ’ s behavior This trend is not new but can trace its roots to ancient times where Athens had a shortage of women due to female infanticide and neglect By contrast, Sparta had a shortage of men, since boys were removed from their families at an early age to receive military training It so occurred that girls in Spartan society were educated, and Spartan women could own and inherit property By the fourth century, Spartan women controlled about 40 percent of their city-state’s land and property In contrast, Athenian women controlled no property at all

This is not good news for the modern Indian woman, for whom the biggest challenge today, is remaining safe in her own country It is strange that, in a country where women have historically been exalted and portrayed in hyperbole terms in religious texts and literature, women should remain prisoners of time, traditions, political games and the rising consumerist tradition There is no “safe haven” for the Indian woman even though she may be a city-based working woman or an uneducated village woman working in the fields Across the country, female infanticide and sex-selective abortions continue to rise with daily news items of heinous sexual crimes taking place almost every other day

Fortunately, new economic, educational and political opportunities have created the conditions for a growing number of women ’ s rights activists to raise the issues, either as part of the media, administration and political structures or as civil society activists While this activism has led to some progress, and there is hope for more, the first step towards tackling such a large domestic problem like this is to acknowledge how big it really is

For Indian women to thrive, the entire perspective of Indian men towards their women has to change

Ferguson and the Conservative Media

arlier this past month, unarmed African-American teenager Michael Brown was shot dead in the streets of Ferguson, Missouri The following weeks erupted with Ferguson citizens filling the streets, protesting the death of Brown at the gun of a white police officer While the initial shooting and subsequent protests unmistakably presented an issue with race relations in Ferguson, the hypocritical reaction from traditionally conser vative media outlets exemplifies a larger domestic issue with race

On August 9, officer Darren Wilson stopped Brown, along with his friend Dorian Johnson, as they were walking in the street Unbeknownst to Wilson, Brown had allegedly committed a s h o p l i f t i n g crime a few minutes prior to his being stopped What transpired next is the cause of controversy

Wilson After being hit a second time, Brown fell to his knees about 35 feet from the police vehicle Multiple witnesses state this is when Brown raised his hands in the air and yelled, “I don’t have a gun, stop shooting ” The shots didn’t stop and Michael Brown died on the street

The official autopsy suggests the shots were not fired at close range, as no gunpowder was present on Brown’s body In an authenticated recording of the shooting, six shots can be heard being fired, followed by a brief pause and then four more shots

Last week, Bill O Reilly stated on his Fox News television program that he returned from his vacation early, as he was,

cials who were legally attempting to collect grazing fees 20 years past due were met with a militia of armed protesters, Sean Hannity called Bundy a “hero” and his armed supporters were “patriots ” This “hero” publicly stated he didn’t recognize the authority of the United States government and questioned, “ are they (AfricanAmericans) better off as slaves, picking cotton and having a family life and doing things, or are they better off under government subsidy?”

The “patriots” at this protest include former Arizona sheriff Richard Mack, who told Fox News, “We were actually strategizing to put all the women up at the front If they’re going to start killing people, I’m sorry, but to show the

The incident in Ferguson speaks to a greater problem regarding the implic discriminatory remarks spewed by m of the conservative media.

A c c o r d i n g to Wilson, Brown or Johnson pushed him back into his police vehicle, grappling for his firearm, resulting in one shot being fired into the cabin Brown then began to run down the street, at which point Wilson fired multiple shots at the fleeing teenagers, killing Brown

Dorian Johnson and other eyewitnesses offer a different narrative Johnson claims that the officer told the two to “ get the f*** on the sidewalk,” and, when they refused, told Brown, “I’m gonna shoot you ” At this point, Brown was hit by a single bullet and was able to flee down the street amid continuous fire from

“furious about how the shooting death of 18year-old Michael Brown is being reported and how various people are reacting to it ” O’Reilly goes on to claim that although a federal investigation had been opened in regards to the shooting, rioting and looting still continued, as “these people don’t want peace ” The incident in Ferguson speaks to a greater problem regarding the implicitly discriminator y remarks spewed by much of the conser vative media When Fox News covered the Cliven Bundy standoff earlier this year which resulted when federal government offi-

including Washington Post columnist Wesley Lower y, reported that Ferguson citizens were the ones protecting community storefronts from looters as the police watched on Never mind that the police didn’t only arrest two journalists and spray tear gas at an Al Jazeera America team, but also fired canisters of tear gas, along with rubber bullets, into the streets of Ferguson Never mind that the Ferguson Police Department has a history of racial profiling in 2009, Ferguson police arrested the wrong man and then violently beat him when he asked for a sleeping mat They then proceeded to charge that man with property damage because he bled on their uniforms

world how ruthless these people are, women needed to be the first ones shot I’m sorry, that sounds horrible I would have put my own wife or daughters there ” Other “patriots” include married couple Jerad and Amanda Miller, who months after spending time at Cliven Bundy’s ranch, killed two police officers and a bystander in Las Vegas These are the people reigning in an out of control federal government These are the people that want justice Not the protestors in Ferguson Those are the rioters They are the looters

Never mind that multiple witnesses,

Fe r g u s o n p r o t e s t o r s were met with violence simply for being on the street past midn i g h t Imagine if the citizens of Ferguson armed themselves, as those supporting Cliven Bundy did, before they stood in front of the militarized police force Would they have been heralded as heroes and patriots?

It’s time conservative media realizes that pointing a firearm at a federal official isn’t acceptable because you ’ re white and protesting the shooting of an unarmed teenager by a police officer isn’t wrong because you ’ re black
