Cornell officials are warning international students about purchasing health insurance plans from misleading companies that have previously left some students unable to pay for their health care expenses
Last year, “ a considerable number of international students” purchased insurance plans that were made to look as if they were Cornell’s student health plan, according to Craig McAllister, director of Risk Management and Insurance and chair of the Student Insurance Advisory Committee Some insurance companies even offered a $50 rebate for students who signed on and were able to convince a peer to purchase the plan, McAllister said
Although the companies described their plans as being comprehensive and affordable, “students with the plan ended up having unexpected health care costs, including out-ofpocket expenses and difficulty accessing services,” McAllister said
“This was problematic, as the plan did not actually provide coverage meeting Cornell criteria,” he added
Because a significant number of students bought these plans, McAllister said that, this year, the committee sent out an email warning international students of such companies in the hopes that it could help “ spare international students and others looking at online

Student tickets for pop artist Ke$ha’s Sept 29 performance at Cornell sold out within hours Wednesday morning leaving some students victorious and other diehard fans disappointed
Approximately 4,000 tickets were sold between 9 a m , when tickets went on sale, and about 11:30 a m , when the last student ticket was sold, according to Peter Schwartz ’14, executive director of the Cornell Concert Commission
pated high traffic and dedicated an entire server to ticket sales, Schwartz said One of the students initially left disappointed by Wednesday morning’s ticket sales was Jackie Yang ’16, who said she was upset when she saw a status saying tickets had sold out
High traffic on the ticket sales website which is managed by the University caused problems for some users Some students were met with websites that loaded too slowly, while others ran into a status on the website saying the tickets were sold out when they were not, according to Schwartz These problems arose even though the University antici-
“I made it a point to get to class early so that I could grab a seat and get my Ke$ha tickets, but as soon as I logged into the website, it said it was sold out, ” she said For Yang, p e r s i s t e n c e paid off She continued to refresh the website for 15 minutes while taking notes in class to see if tickets were still available and then saw she was able to buy a ticket
“By that point, I felt pretty pathetic, but it was worth it,” Yang said “Hopefully, the concert will be worth it, too ” Another student, Hannah Dorsey ’16, was also affected by the website’s slow load
Townhouses Will Now Receive Free Access to RedRover
By ANUSHKA MEHROTRA Sun Staff Wr ter
Residents living in the townhouses on North Campus used to have such poor connection to Cornell’s wireless network that they bought their own routers to access the Internet Now, they are rejoicing that the University has extended RedRover access to the townhouses
The suggestion to extend RedRover wireless network to include the townhouses came from comments made to the Student Assembly at a freshman outreach event in Februar y Ian Harris ’16, vice president for public relations for the S A , said ensuring all undergraduate dorms have access to Wi-Fi was a cause that resonated with him
“Freshmen living in Balch, [Court-Kay-Bauer] or Donlon have always been able to move into their dorm and have immediate access to Wi-Fi without having to pay additional fees,” said Harris, who previously ser ved as a freshman at-large representative for the S A
Harris said he thought it was unfair to make students living in the townhouses provide their own Wi-Fi
“Many of the students had to buy their own router and spent up to $100 in some cases, ” he added
All undergraduate residence halls now have free access to the Internet via the RedRover network, according to the Cornell University Information Technologies website Unbundled wireless ser vice, for which residents pay a monthly fee for usage, is also available to several fraternities, sororities and co-ops not owned by the University
In an effort to bring Wi-Fi to the townhouses, Harris reached out to Don Sevey, director of information services, who obtained a financial quote from CIT for the cost of the undertaking
“Don was extremely helpful throughout the process Upon getting the quotation, Campus Life Enterprise management then decided to proceed with the installation,” Harris said Pooja Verma ’17, a current townhouse resident,
expressed her appreciation for the addition of free Internet access to the townhouse community
“It's nice having such a strong signal without having to worr y about buying a router, ” she said
Siddarth Chandrasekaran grad, assistant Residential Community Advisor for the townhouse community, said he thinks wireless access has solved several problems faced by townhouse residents who tried to study without having steady access to the Internet
“I advised the Townhouse Hall Council and I have heard so many students complain how not having wireless has been an issue when they do group assignments,” he stated “[ Townhouses] are almost always quiet and a nice alternative to the overbooked group study rooms in the libraries ”
Wireless connectivity has also eased the burden of the townhouses’ resident advisorsby simplifying the Room Inventor y Condition process, which is electronically submitted in other dorms, eliminating the need to take lengthy notes by hand
“Having wireless this year helped them a great deal; they see something and they document it right there,” Chandrasekaran said “It may sound trivial, but it was a boon to all our RAs ” Harris added that he thinks this year ’ s freshmen will save a lot of time and money from not having to shop for and set up a router
“It takes an extra, unnecessar y step out of the movein process I believe it will make their first few days' experience easier,” he said
Verma echoed his sentiments, saying she was “ surprised” the change made such a large impact to her experience living in the townhouses thus far
“It's been really convenient,” she said “ You never think about Wi-Fi as one of those things that you really need, but the fact that we have it here is a huge plus ”
The University received a threat early Wednesday, prompting Cornell Police to ask community members to alert them of suspicious or unusual activity
Cornell Police have determined that the threat is not credible, that its time frame has “elapsed,” and that there “is no active threat at this time,” Kathy Zoner, chief of the Cornell
University Police Department, said In an email sent to the community at 1:29 p m Still, because Cornellians' “safety is paramount to the well-being of our community,” campus police are asking students, faculty members and staff to remain vigilant, Zoner said in the email
Zoner stressed that the email was sent out of “ an abundance of caution ” She asked community members to take any threatening communications they receive today seriously, to report
such threats to police and to check in on friends and colleagues to make sure they are doing fine John Carberr y, director of University press relations, said in an interview that he could not specify what the threat was or how it was received He added, however, that police are actively investigating it

AThe Boyfriend Search
fter helping me move into my apartment and get ready for senior year, my Dad’s par ting words to me before leaving Ithaca were: “I think you should find a boyfriend ”

We had spent all weekend setting up my exciting new apartment, but suddenly, more apparent than anything, were the things that were missing: I had no one to introduce my parents to while they were in Ithaca, no one to text late at night and while many girls would sleep at their boyfriend’s houses during O-week, I would spend the next four nights completely alone, nursing a phobia of serial killers until my housemates moved in
My dad must have sensed that he had said the wrong thing because he quickly tried to justify his advice by telling me that he thought having a boyfriend would be good for my self-esteem
I felt like the rug had been pulled out from under me All my life, my parents have told me to relax, play the field and try not to get tied down “Don’t look outside yourself for happiness,” has been my Mom’s mantra
But now, on the dawn of my senior year of college, my dad was hinting no, literally declaring that he thought a boyfriend would make me happy Had all the self-fulfillment stuff been bullshit?
Enough was enough I was going to start looking for someone to date
I went out during O-week with a fire in me, determined to meet as many boys as possible I party-hopped like a crazy person, played drinking games I hated and forced myself into conversation with any boy who talked to me I entered annexes like a hawk and if there were no cute boys in sight, I immediately got anxious and wanted to leave to go to the next one I even danced my heart out at Pixel
Every boy I met, I sized up instantly Was he cute enough? Would he find me funny? When I was shaking his hand, I was really trying to imagine him scrambling eggs in the kitchen of my new apartment
At the end of the week, all I had to show for my effor ts were several awkward encounters with freshmen and severe anxiety Maybe a boyfriend would make me happy, but the search was making me miserable
Now, a week or so removed from the cloud of alcohol and questionable decisions that was O-week, I am able to realize just how flawed my approach was By trying to sor t guys into “boyfriend” or “ not boyfriend” boxes the moment I met them, I was essentially buying into two faulty ideas: One, that I know what I’m looking for and what will make me happy (no one really knows), and two, that these things are quantifiable and apparent in an individual right away (they are not)
The truth and what I’d forgotten all throughout O-week is that attraction is not always instant It can sneak up on you gradually When I first met my boyfriend from freshman year, he was drunk and eating a Pop-Tart in our friend’s kitchen at 2 a m Not only did I find him ghastly pale and thin and had no interest in talking to him whatsoever, but I was on a date with someone else at the time I left that evening without a clue that just one year later, I would be in love with Pop-Tart boy in a way that consumed my entire being Had I known back then, I would have been deeply troubled by the idea
I’m not saying that we should force ourselves to get to know people we aren ’ t interested in What I’m saying is that just because you don’t think someone is boyfriend or girlfriend material when you first meet them, it doesn’t mean you won ’ t be madly in love with them three weeks from now Sometimes it takes awhile to realize how funny someone is Sometimes the people we are initially repulsed by are the ones we fall the hardest for And the people we are immediately attracted to may turn out to be the biggest creeps, or just plain boring When it comes to first impressions, we have cause to be uneasy I can ’ t say with absolute certainty that I didn’t meet the love of my life during Oweek Maybe I did, but I won ’ t know it until we run into each other again three months from now Who knows? In the meantime, my strategic boyfriend search is over until further notice Instead, I’ve resigned myself to always putting my best foot forward, and allowing myself to be pleasantly surprised

I read with interest, and not a little gratification, Maggie Henry’s apologia for interning this summer with an investment bank In my day in June I celebrated my Fifth Year reunion rising seniors coveted those positions like season tickets to Lynah Rink The university spun up a newfangled major in, of all places, the Agriculture School (“Applied Economics and Management,” it was christened) to accommodate all the frothy demand To visit the annual career fair at Barton Hall was to stroll down Wall Street in miniature Suit and tie, not a Carnelian red hoodie, was for a time de rigueur along the fashionable walks of College Ave Those of us who eschewed the investment banking track were all but pariahs, written off as underachievers, duds or communists Pre-professionalism is indeed in the ascendant The liberal arts education is under siege Should software engineers and management consultants be compelled to wade through the Western canon? I read too few of the Great Books to say But if a summer of sleepless drudgery tabbing through Excel spreadsheets is no longer the rule, but the exception well then, Maggie Henry, keep on philosophizing

To Splurge In Ithaca
By EMILY FOSTER Sun Contributor
It’s a relatively quiet Friday night at Madeline’s, the high-end American fusion restaurant on the Commons The lighting is low, which makes for a calming atmosphere, and we ’ re seated near to the front of the restaurant by a window overlooking Aurora Street From this vantage point, I can take in the entire restaurant, from the bar (both your standard kind of bar, as well as a dessert bar) that lines the back of the room to the tasteful décor that lines the right of the restaurant Back-lit art-deco paintings of nature cover the right wall, which makes up for the lack of windows on that side It is definitely a step up in
classiness and fanciness from your average Ithaca eatery, making it a great place to splurge on a meal for a birthday or other special event, or even for no particular occasion
The menu offers a mix of classic American fare and more creative, contemporary dishes We ordered the lemon grass chicken potstickers with ponzu and beef samosas with mango chutney as appetizers To tide us over as we waited, the waiters gave us delicious rosemary and sea salt focaccia with olive oil to munch on The appetizers were colorful and elegantly plated The samosas were flavorful and savory, and served with two very unique and beautifully displayed dipping sauces as well as the mango chutney The crispy outer wrapper
gives way to a rich, thick filling of beef, corn and peas that blurs the line between American, Mexican and Indian cuisines The potstickers are deliciously simple and simply delicious The accompanying ponzu sauce has a slight kick which works well with their simple flavoring The chef also took a chance by putting corn in the potstickers a risk that could have turned out badly, but made them even more delightful Little touches like these make Madeline’s more elegant, innovative and tasteful, and therefore worth the extra money for a classy night out
The menu offers a grilled caesar salad with an Asian Caesar dressing, which we naturally had to try out of curiosity The grilled pieces of lettuce were delightfully crispy
and smoky tasting, and the salad in general was refreshing, but the dressing was strange and the flavor of the slightly blackened lettuce and the fishy taste of the dressing clashed in an odd way From there, we ordered the grilled statler chick-
en breast (no relation to the Statler Hotel, according to the waitress), and the filet mignon (because we ARE splurging, here!) The chicken was served with a peppercorn dijon cream sauce which was intriguing to the taste buds, with a myriad of tastes, textures and aftertastes It took a second to get used to, but after sorting through the flavors and enjoying the tenderness of the excellently cooked chicken, we decided that we liked it The filet sauce that topped the filet mignon was equally interesting: a mirepoix of what tasted like tomatoes, carrots, onions and perhaps even mango This proved a very adventurous combination that was perhaps a bit heavy on the tomato but that was nonetheless appetizing Both of these entrees came with sides of roasted potatoes which were perhaps my favorite part of the meal sometimes it’s the little things that are the best Madeline’s is famous for its aforementioned dessert bar You’re celebrating or splurging anyway, so you might as well spring for dessert The treats are all beautifully displayed in the case, which makes decisions especially difficult After you order them, you return to your table while the staff heats
them up (if need be) or serves them a la mode While I love the idea of a restaurant that actually lets you look at your dessert before you eat it, herein lies a problem The desserts are not made per order, which means that if you want a hot dessert, Madeline’s has to heat it up for you, and they are not made fresh We ordered the chocolate peanut persuasion, the apple caramel crunch, the tiramisu and the chocolate strawberr y molten lava cake The tiramisu was delicious and was served beautifully in a Italian coffee cup, and the chocolate peanut persuasion was delightfully rich (though being a peanut-butter lover myself, I could have done with more peanut taste and less chocolate) The apple caramel crunch was lovely and I would certainly recommend it for people who prefer desserts sans chocolat; however, because it had to be reheated it perhaps didn’t taste as wonderful as it could have My expectations were high for the molten lava cake and unfortunately were not quite met another problem arose from reheating and the cake was not as molten as the name suggested You should take my criticisms with a grain of salt, however, because I’m a dessert snob (and because despite all that I just said, we ate all of them)
Madeline’s is a lovely place to go and splurge if you ’ ve been saving up and looking to take a break from the quick, cheap cuisine of Collegetown Treat yourself to Madeline’s upscale and delectable cuisine if you ’ re looking for a relaxing atmosphere, awesome and original food and an (always) necessary sugar rush

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT
Disco has come a long way from John Travolta, platform shoes, white guy afros and “I Will Sur vive ” Hell, it had come a long way before then What started as the funk, R&B and Latin-tinged soundtrack for the multicultural, gay-friendly loft clubs of NYC first turned into
a w o r l d w i d e m u s i c a l s e n s a t i o n T h e n i t became public enemy number one of longhaired rock fans ever ywhere; then a hackneyed period reference; and then, sometime in the mid-2000s, rock fans, who had just recently admitted to enjoying that hip-hop music people were so crazy about, started referencing old disco records and Larr y Levan and the Paradise Garage DJ booth
This is largely because of DFA figurehead and LCD Soundsystem mastermind James Murphy “I was the first one playing Daft Punk to the rock kids,” he sang on 2002 single “Losing My Edge ” “I did it at CBGB’s Ever ybody thought it was crazy ” It was, but, gosh darn it, it worked!
It may seem unfair to mention Mr Murphy in a review of Holy Ghost!’s sophomore LP, the delightfully groovy Dynamics, as the Brooklyn duo probably have a hard enough time escaping his shadow as it is But even Nick Millihiser and Alex Frankel admit Murphy’s trailblazing status, thanking both the man and his musical moniker in the liner notes The only reason
S T S P I N S
a record like Dynamics gets attention and acclaim in this day and age is because of Murphy’s sublime synthesis of his eclectic influences and his vocal endorsement of the groups he loves Respect is due Luckily for them (but mostly for the listeners), Holy
Ghost! deliver something more than worthy of the DFA
arranged, Dynamics is a disco record through-andthrough, albeit one with strains of ’80s electro-pop and, oddly enough, Peter Gabriel The complete opposite of
Okkervil River’s newest album, The Silver Gymnasium, has clear sentimental value to lead singer Will Sheff, who is a true artist in all senses of the world From the song titles to the album artwork, this album explore lessons and depictions of Sheff ’ s upbringing in Meridian, N H in the mid 80s Although this new album is somewhat different from Okkervil River’s earlier work, it represents a maturation of the band, and has a new reflective spirit that only comes with age
Single and first song on the album “It Was My Season” clearly sets the scene for the ’80s references that are littered throughout the album with lines like, “Below the Atari I could feel your heart just going ” Although The Silver Gymnasium lacks some of the new age techniques present in previous albums, it also lacks some of the past albums’ scratchiness One of my favorite songs on the album, “Pink-Slips,” can only be described as a great example of what indie rock should be, catchy, alternative and just chill vibes
Of course, one cannot discuss The Silver Gymnasium without discussing the album artwork, as it plays a crucial role to the music itself In a time when the artistry of album cover art is becoming less apparent, William Schaff, who has previously done album artwork for Okkervil River, takes the cover of this record to a new level of cool, creating a map of Meridian based on Sheff ’ s personal account of his childhood Additionally, the Okkervil River website now hosts an ’80s style first person video game where you can literally walk through Meridian as Sheff ’ s pixelated younger self and investigate the silver gymnasium even further
So while this album might be slightly different than Okkervil River’s previous work, it was unpredictable, and I don’t necessarily think that is a bad thing In fact, it might be for the best Sheff ’ s personal touches, 80s references and personal anecdotes allow for a meaningful collection of music that transcends its initial catchiness
James Murphy on the mic, Alex Frankel has the voice of a Teen Beat heartthrob circa 1988 On the clavinet and cowbell groove of “Dumb Disco Ideas,” he earnestly delivers vague lyrics like a sex-obsessed Thomas Mars, looking for something to end his “ summer drought ” “Dumb Disco Ideas”’s title is exquisitely apt: its resemblance to seventies disco classic “Funky Town” is a hilarious tribute to what is an awesomely silly cut “Changing of the Guard” is practically a Duran Duran song, all taut guitar lines, squiggly synths, heavily processed “ahhs” and Frankel’s longing vocal deliver y Even the melodrama of “It Must Be The Weather” retains a certain playfulness, with electric guitar squeals and heavily reverberating drums that just scream “eighties ” It’s a shame that Dynamics’ s release was delayed until September; from the pulsating synths that open “Okay” to the hand claps and fluttering strings of “Bridge and Tunnel,” it would have und oub t ed ly b een t he d i scer ni ng N YC d i sco attendee’s summer soundtrack Easily digestible but impressively executed, Dynamics does the DFA legacy a grand ser vice: despite what some might say, life goes on after the demise of LCD Soundsystem, and, from the sound of it, it’s gonna be a lot of fun

Accidental Misogynist
In late July, James Brooks, the man behind poptimist synth project Elite Gymnastics, announced the creation of a new project entitled Dead Girlfriends While this would have been notable in itself (Elite Gymnastics’ “Andreja 4-ever” is a jam), Brooks intended for the project to be “aggressively more feminine ” Menacing, feedback-soaked first single “On Fraternity” makes this obvious: In it, Brooks cuts deep, calling out his male peer groups complicit participation in rape culture; even the project’s name was derived from the works of renowned anti-pornography feminist Andrea Dworkin
Some, observing the mounting specter of rape culture and some backwards-ass antiabortion legislation attempting to be passed around the country, embraced the track’s explicit moralizing Pitchfork’s Jenn Pelly remarked that “it sounds ideal in 2013 a white male artist with a direct feminist message that can speak freely with anyone ” It’s an abrasive and intriguing track worth listening to, and Brooks is likely coming from a good place girlfriend Grimes, who contributed the album art to the Dead Girlfriends project, tackled similar themes on last year ’ s “Oblivion ” Internet feminists, however, were quick to cry foul Stereogum’s Claire Lobenfeld compared it to the nauseatingly bad Brad Paisley-LL Cool J collaboration, “Accidental Racist ” “I’m uninterested in having a watery paraphrasing of the words I’ve been screaming for years sang back to me in a male voice,” wrote Michelle Myers The word “mansplaining” was used There was a SPIN roundtable that, naturally, invoked the names of Fugazi and Bikini Kill And while it could have merely been a troll-fest (think Jezebel’s more alarmist postings multiplied by the pettiness of music
blog traffic-fiends), a lot of intelligent conversation was had Some felt that Brooks’ appropriation of what is a female issue was disingenuous; others were simply unimpressed with what they saw as a simplistic approach to writing about sexual violence; and more just felt that speaking from the position of white male privilege automatically disqualifies your perspective on the travails of marginalized peoples
All in all, I imagined Brooks being in a similar situation as someone who bakes a cake for someone ’ s birthday only to find out half the guests are deathly allergic to its ingredients: he’s begun backpedaling, renaming the project Default Genders and calling “On Fraternity” a failure While it has surely brewed up renewed interest in Brooks’ career, this venture has put him in an awkward spot Brooks obviously means well To think that he is craftily appropriating feminist ideals to get blogger attention is not only cynical but silly; Elite Gymnastics was itself a buzzy little group, and his association with Grimes would undoubtedly guarantee at least some coverage
on Pitchfork and similar sites So, what we ’ re left with is someone trying to earnestly comment on an important issue who is facing backlash because he wasn ’ t born with the right set of genitals Remind you of anything?
For a music fan, it puts you in an odd headspace How can a song with such good intentions be so maligned while an album where a man says the line “Put my fist in her
like a civil rights sign” is breathlessly praised? I mean, sure, Kanye West isn’t speaking for women in the way that “On Fraternity” was, but I’m also 100 percent sure that the Internet would flip its collective shit if Vampire Weekend wrote a song about fisting (then again, the feminist expectations of rap versus indie rock warrants its own column or thesis, really)
With 71 percent of festival bills being comprised of all-male bands, it’s fairly evident that female underrepresentation is still an issue in pop music, whether we want to admit it or not Women are right to be peeved by such a fact and, as a result, will respond to any sermonizing from male songwriters with an eyeroll Still, regardless of whether Brooks’ thoughts were eloquently put or not, shouldn’t we be encouraging all voices to enter the conversation? After all, as Brooks himself said, “I just feel like social problems never get solved by people not talking about them ” Patriarchal dominance is not just a female problem; it is a societal problem For feminism to succeed, men everywhere need to realize that they too are being oppressed by these prevailing attitudes of society Art, and especially pop music, allows people to begin eroding the values that allow such attitudes to exist If male artists are chastised for their
attempts to incorporate feminism into their songs, it discourages people from engaging with that school of thought Then we ’ re just going to have people release more songs like “Blurred Lines” instead of noble, flawed pieces like “On Fraternity ” And, as anyone who witnessed the Miley Cyrus VMA twerkfest can attest, the path to progress does not lie in that direction

10 Questions columnist and Sports Editor Haley Velasco sat down with senior Stephen Reisert to talk everything from soccer to musical talents to his love for gingers
1 You’re a senior on the soccer team What has soccer meant to you over the last four years in college?
Soccer has been amazing It’s been so many highs and so many lows It’s been very challenging but at the same time very rewarding I think that we have all done a great job of coming together and really starting to see the program go in a different direction which is great to see But I think that most important is not only the reward that we get from playing, but also the connections that I get with my teammates, which is tremendous I live in a house with not only seven seniors, who are seven of my best friends, but I am on a team of 30 guys who I am extremely close with It’s an experience that I will never forget
2 Can you talk about those seven seniors? I heard you guys get into some crazy stuff? Some funny stories?
There’s a number of stories and they are going to keep on building as we spend a third year living in the same house together Honestly, every day something different happens which is extremely enjoyable I live with seven clowns basically who all have different personalities and fit their role in a unique way We all sort of give each other a hard time and beat up on each other but it’s all great
3 Give us your craziest soccer stor y so far Weirdest thing that has happened on the field? Funniest locker room stor y?
Crazy story There are so many of them because we are all so weird I would say something sort of weird is that and a lot of the guys make fun of me for this too is that I tend to take five hour energies before the game I don’t know why It has sort become a ritual I get very hyped during games and everyone gets a kick out of my
energy
Why is it five-hour energ y? And not like Red Bull?
It’s that 2:30 feeling, you know what I mean? I am not sure why it’s five hour energy
4 You guys have a house on Linden, I heard about a band Can you tell us about that?
The legendary band Honestly, I thought that this was a joke at first but a couple guys in the house can play instruments One of them can play the drums so we had this great idea to form a band and of course I player along with it
We ended up playing together a couple of times Me being the lead singer And it was just a crazy experience I think that we are broken up at the moment because one of the guys took a semester That just means that we have to get back together That will be crazy
5 Last year, talk about winning Ivies I heard that you were at your house when you found out?
Yeah so this was an incredible experience, something that I will never forget The night before we played Columbia, we rolled up to my house in Westchester County, New York It’s about 35 minutes away from the Columbia field My mom is a great cook and it’s been sort of her goal to have the team over since I have joined the program, so we finally made that a reality The night before we were about to win the Ivy League Championship It was kind of crazy at first because I don’t know if anybody remembers but the day before, we had like a huge snow storm and this was right after Hurricane Sandy, in my area there was a lot of trees down and we got our power up literally the day before everyone got there We actually found out at my house, in my living room when we were all together that we clinched the Ivy League title That room is a very sacred room in my house It was an incredible experience Great to have the guys over It’s just going to be something that I will never forget
What did your mom cook for you guys while you were there?
She made a lot of stuff Since I brag about her cooking all of the time, she had to make sure that she came with her guns loaded and brought out her best dishes It was a carbo load A bunch of pasta and bad food that we probably shouldn ’ t have eaten before the game But we made it all happen I would like to believe that everything that she made to help us win
6 Some people consider you guys a ‘bromance, ’ how do you feel about that?
Yeah, we are definitely extremely close It’s sort of strange We branch out but as we much as we try and branch out, the closer we get to each other I think that there is something to be said that we spend four hours at practice together and then spending the rest of the night at my place We never really get into fights It gets a little rowdy sometimes It’s fun and crazy but everyone is great We also have the junior house right next door to us so we try to keep our distance Not really I heard Jake Rinow and you get into some questionable things together?
Yeah, Jake and I have an interesting relationship because we started off as freshman roommates together He’s probably as rugged and gritty as a college athlete comes He likes to think I am high maintenance and I like to think otherwise But we go back and forth all the time We get into some crazy hypothetical arguments but it’s all fun and games
7 I heard you have a nickname and that I was supposed to ask you how you got it?
Yeah, so my nickname followed me here I make the joke that half of my high school follows me here In high school, my nickname was Chubs and it was actually before that in middle school as well When I was younger, people liked to describe me as a chubby kid and honestly it started as a joke I went with it because I was digging it Next thing I know everyone in my town calls me it I have had someone come up to me
and ask me what my real name was because they are just so used to calling me that It defines sort of who I am
8 I heard you are a part of a business professional organization on campus?
I have been in Phi Sigma Epsilon since my freshman year It has been a great experience It has taught me a lot about professional development, about myself and about how to network It has been extremely rewarding I decided last semester and was nominated to be president of the organization I took over the reins last semester and it has been an incredible success It has been a great learning experience for me and watching the organization grow has been rewarding
Tell us about investment banking this summer? Didn’t you work for J P Morgan?
This summer I worked for J P Morgan in New York City I worked in the wealth management division It was an incredible experience It was great It taught me a lot about myself, the markets and industry It puts life in perspective when you are working long hours and are away from Cornell and athletics
9 I also heard that you have a supposed love for gingers?
For gingers, I don’t how to comment on that one Including Rick Pflasterer ’13? I do love Rick Pflasterer Let’s be honest here But Rick Pflasterer is definitely one that stands out in my mind
10 If you could trade places and be on any of the women ’ s Cornell athletic teams, what team would you be on?
That is tough I would say women ’ s lacrosse The girls that I know on that team are all very cool and put together people They are a successful organization

Freshman Travels Globe to Join Red
Australia native Sinclair ’16 adds to diverse squad
By OLIVIA WITTELS
While the men ’ s tennis team is no stranger to international players, this season, the Red brings an even larger intercontinental roster to the courts One freshman in particular, Colin Sinclair, joins the Red from a continent almost 10,000 miles away the Brisbane, Australia native has made the journey to Ithaca to join the Red tennis squad
Head coach Silviu Tanasoiu said having players from different countries benefits the team as a whole
“It’s something I’m personally interested in in developing within our team, ” Tanasoiu said “I think it offers a good opportunity for our entire team to learn about a different culture and somebody that has a different perspective on life and values different things than most of the American players do Without a doubt, I think it adds a value to our program ”
Junior Kyle Berman added that the fact Sinclair hails from outside the United States provides a strategic advantage on the courts
“Players from other countries often have unique styles, which often makes them harder to play against,” Berman said “Having players from other countries also makes it difficult for other teams to create a game plan, since they are often not that well known ”
Because Sinclair comes from such a far away country, Tanasoiu did not see as much of Sinclair’s tennis play as he did the play of the other recruits before the season started However, Tanasoiu said he is pleased with what he has seen from the Aussie so far
“I’ve been extremely pleasantly surprised [at] how much potential there is in him and how much better he can get, ” he said “Colin will have a good impact on the team for sure He has an enormous amount of potential, and I’m very excited about having him on the team ”
At a small tournament at the Reis Tennis Center a week ago, it was not only Sinclair’s level of play, but also
his on-court attitude that impressed his coaches and teammates alike
“He played really well, and he had a few good matches and beat a few of the starters from last year, ” junior co-captain Sam Fleck said
Tanasoui added that Sinclair’s calm demeanor has likely helped him during his play so far this season
“From what I gathered from watching him practice and compete this week in the Men’s Open, just coming from Australia, I think he has a laid back personality he’s very comfortable,” Tanasoiu said “He plays within himself, he’s a very calm guy and I’m sure that’s why he was able to compete with a player who played three for us last year
His teammates also mentioned that Sinclair would be a likely contender for a singles and doubles position this season
“[Colin] also played doubles in practice and after a bit of practice he looks like he’ll be a great doubles player this year, ” Fleck said “I think he’ll be a great asset to the team in both singles and doubles ”
Berman confirmed that Sinclair is in the running for the singles and doubles spots
“Colin has an all court game, good strokes and is good ball striker He has the ability to compete for starting spots in singles and doubles,” Berman said
With regards to fitting in with the rest of the team and adapting to a new environment as an international student, his coach had nothing but praise for the freshman from down under
“I think he’s doing great, ” Tanasoiu said “[He’s] a very humble, modest, and down-to-earth kid He’s laid back, easy to engage and I think the guys around the team just find him very pleasant to talk with and spend time with He’s someone very hard not to get along with ”
