With the environmental activist group Divest Har vard blocking the entrances to her office for a fifth straight day, University President Drew G
Faust has offered the protesters a meeting if they end their blockades
“I would be happy to meet with you and a representative group of your student colleagues when you have ceased disrupting university operations,” Faust
wrote in an email on Thursday to Divest Harvard co-founder Chloe S Maxmin ’15, according to a copy of the message shared with The Crimson
In addition to their ongoing demonstration at Massachusetts Hall, roughly two dozen protest-

ers from the group blocked entrances to University Hall for the second time this week at about 6:15 a m on Thursday They say they plan to stay until about 5 p m
The protesters, who began their planned “Heat Week” protests on Sunday, are demanding that the University divest its $35 9 billion endowment from fossil fuel companies
Faust wrote in the email that she had not received a request for a meeting from students until she saw a sign held by students on Wednesday afternoon at Emerson Hall, where demonstrators silently stood in protest outside a lecture she was introducing Faust made a similar offer to meet with student protesters when they occupied Mass Hallin February on the condition that they vacate the building, but the protesters declined Faust has repeatedly argued against divestment as a means to address climate change

NEW YORK (AP) Teen
smoking hit a new low last year while the popularity of electronic cigarettes and water pipes boomed, a government repor t shows
The number of high school students who tried e-cigarettes tripled in one year to more than 13 percent Water pipes or hookahs were used by 9 4 percent
But smoking of traditional cigarettes plummeted to 9 2 percent from more than 13 percent That means smoking in high school is now less common than e-cigarette or hookah use
The decline in cigarette smoking “is very dramatic and very encouraging,” said Robin Koval, president of Legacy, an antismoking organization
The report released Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention mirrors the results of another government-funded study issued in December
The CDC report is based on a national survey of about 22,000 students at middle schools and high schools, both public and private Similar trends were found
for middle school but at lower levels of use
Students were asked whether they had smoked or used a tobacco product in the previous 30 days; those who said yes were deemed current smokers
Besides cigarettes, the report found continuing declines in the use of cigars, chewing tobacco and snuff among high school students
CDC Director Dr Tom Frieden this week described the findings as “alarming ” He said the decline in use of most tobacco products was more than offset by the growth in nicotine-laden ecigarettes and hookahs
Some public health experts say the CDC is taking an unusually hard stand against e-cigarettes, at a time when scientists still trying to determine how harmful they are They started selling in the U S in 2006 and are often described as a less dangerous alternative to cigarettes
“The CDC has been very onesided on the e-cigarette issue,” said Kenneth Warner, a University of Michigan public health professor who is a leading authority on
smoking and health
E-cigarettes are batter y-powered devices that produce an odorless vapor that typically contains nicotine and flavorings
Scientists say nicotine is harmful for the developing brain
Frieden said e-cigarettes are a new way of introducing kids to nicotine and potentially hooking them on tobacco products in the future
“The idea that kids are better off using e-cigarettes is just the wrong way of thinking about it,” he said
A year ago, the Food and Drug Administration proposed regulating e-cigarettes, including banning sales to minors A final rule is expected by June, an FDA spokesman said Thursday
Others were more positive about the new report and the drop in traditional cigarettes, and voiced more uncertainty about the science around e-cigarettes
There’s not yet a scientific consensus on whether kids who try e-cigarettes go on to become regular smokers, Koval said
“Is this a gateway in? Or a pathway out? We don’t know,” she said

Beijing court sentenced a veteran Chinese journalist to seven years in prison Friday for leaking a document detailing the Communist Party leadership’s resolve to aggressively target civil society and press freedom as a threat to its monopoly on power
The sentence against Gao Yu, 71, comes amid a widening clampdown on free speech that highlights the gap between China's vision of rule of law and
Western notions of civil liberties and judicial fairness The document Gao was convicted of leaking, deemed a state secret, underpins the clampdown under the 2 ½-year-old administration of Communist Party leader Xi Jinping
The court verdict appears to confirm the authenticity of the leaked document, which had been reported since June 2013 but never was discussed openly by the leadership
Clinton traveled to Iowa by van from her home in Ne w York and held a series of events with small groups of people, leaving any big rallies for later She pledged a campaign aimed at building “the economy of tomorrow, ” strengthening families, fixing government dysfunction and protecting the countr y from threats She has yet to outline policy specifics

On January 24, 2003, I witnessed a vibrant soul at play on Vienna’s Konzerthaus stage Leading La Capella Reial de Catalunya and Le Concert des Nations in a program of madrigals and sinfonias by Claudio Monteverdi, Johann Hermann Schein and Samuel Scheidt, Jordi Savall’s performance was everything the music was: thrilling, captivating and, above all, inviting On Wednesday night, hunched over his bass viol (the fretted, cello-like instrument of which he is a legendary virtuoso) and accompanied by soloists from Le Concert des Nations, I saw a changed man a man playing for himself, as if into a mirror
It was more than a little surprising that, from a musician who boasts nearly 200 recordings, we should encounter such a pedantic program Composers Jean de Sainte-Colombe and protégé, Marin Maras, were surely familiar to anyone who has at least glanced at Savall’s 40-year career, which broke international waters when he provided the soundtrack for the 1991 film Tous les Matins du Monde, a dramatization of Marais’ relationship with his reclusive teacher
By far, the musical offerings from those masters of the instrument were highlights of the evening’s performance Sainte-Colombe’s brooding “Tombeau les Regrets” was a rare chance to hear Savall in duet The sound of two bass viols alone was nothing short of transportive Even the leading violin of Marais’s Sonnerie de Ste-Geneviève du Mont-de-Paris, an inventive piece meant to evoke the din of church bells, could do nothing to undermine their resonance
The same could not be said for the rest of the program, which distilled unremarkable background music from some of the biggest names in the 17th-century French Baroque Anonymous selections from the era of Louis XIII set the tone for the program ’ s theme, which sought to articulate the splendor of the French Bourbon court And yet, what began as a royal affair settled into what felt like a glorified rehearsal This was not only because of the awkward staging (the musicians were, for instance, left floundering without assistance when a music stand broke), but also because court music was for the most part incidental and not designed to be heard out of context And so, whatever stateliness might have infused its origins,

“I want to design the inside of a spaceship’s furniture, if Elon Musk is really making spaceships,” Tyler, The Creator said in a recent inter view with PBS’s Tavis Smiley As the ringleader of Los Angeles’ Odd Future Collective (shorthand for Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All), Tyler’s constant expansion into new forms of creative expression leaves one thinking that him designing spaceship furniture with the Tesla CEO would be all that outlandish What’s more, the 24-year-old MC’s antics on late-night television (e g riding around on Jimmy Fallon’s back), paired with his own show on Adult Swim, have nearly rendered his personality more popular than his music
Yet Tyler’s music output remains the most prolific aspect of his multifaceted career and he returns this week with the surprise release of his fourth studio album, Cherr y Bomb The largely self-produced, feature-light project’s arrival (along with that of Earl Sweatshirt’s excellent, I Don’t Like Shit, I Don’t Go Outside) has the music critic community abuzz as to what happens to the OFWGKTA crew when they grow up, with Pitchfork going so far as to title an editorial Earl Sweatshirt and Tyler, The Creator’s Odd Future as Mature Adults ” Earlier projects such as 2013’s Wolf hinted at a thematic maturity previously unseen from any of the Odd Future MCs, but it remained inseparable from the vulgar Peter Pan image Tyler
this music came across not as regal but as dolorous This rendered the listening experience both intriguing and depressing
While on the one hand we could feel ourselves traveling back in time, on the other it reminded us of the transience of power and arbitrariness of kingly life It was like hearing history crumble before our very ears, leaving only a handful of extant sonic monuments to an unrecoverable age Even the jewelry of violin and flute seemed to harbor shadows of doubt It was a strange thing: This music would not have existed without the power structures that engendered it, but its occasional beauties spoke of realms far beyond any artifice of courtly refinement
From a programming perspective, missed opportunities abounded For one, there was no chance to hear the unaccompanied solo viol and the two duo miniatures by Antoine Forqueray and his son Jean-Baptiste were etudinal at best, further diluted by a superfluous keyboard backbone Despite father Forqueray being once called by Savall “ a knight who is always on the verge of working his horse to death, but who knows his horse too well to go quite that far,” there was little proof of such concept
For another, to be in the presence of renowned harpsichordist Pierre Hantaï, only to find him relegated to a continuo (i e , supporting) role was curious, even if we did hear some of his brilliance come through in three selections from JeanPhilippe Rameau’s 1741 “Pièces de Clavecin en Concerts ”
Yet with so much rich keyboard literature to choose from among the likes of Rameau and François Couperin, I couldn’t help but scratch my head over the latter’s Les Concerts Royaux, of which the three sections played were like the courtiers they were meant to entertain: passive and overdressed Far more active, though no less dressed, was the suite from Jean-Baptiste Lully’s 1670 “Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme,” after which the musicians were, for once, visibly satisfied Why not choose from something more suitable for a live setting, such as Couperin’s 1728 collection of suites for viol?
Likewise, the inclusion of Jean-Marie Leclair’s “Sonata in D Major, Op 2, No 8” was apocryphal at best, especially when one considers the lack any credible evidence suggesting that Leclair even played at the court of Louis XIV Why not instead bring another violinist and play the far more mature fascinations of his Opus 5?
In light of the fact Savall has become increasingly known as an artist of difference, weaving together wide-ranging faiths,

continues to cultivate With Cherr y Bomb, Tyler gets closer than ever to seamlessly fusing his jester-like antics with both musical and emotional depth, presenting his paradoxical traits as two sides to the same coin
At first glance, Cherr y Bomb fits right within the canon of Tyler’s previous projects His gruff, aggressive rapping voice renders his songs immediately recognizable, as does his tendency to gravitate toward a kind of subverted, Neptunesinfluenced soundscape While those trademarks remain intact throughout the 13-track album, the artist spends the majority of these 55 minutes pushing himself in new directions Thus, the guitar-driven intro, “Deathcamp,” proves itself misleading It resembles the aggressive, hard rock-influenced Odd Future tracks of old, and even ends with Tyler repeating the phrase, “ Welcome to Deathcamp ” Yet the remainder of Cherr y Bomb has as many moments of cloud-parting beauty as it does raw aggression “I really want to sing,” Tyler said in an inter view with Larr y King last year, “But my tone of voice is too deep to do what I want ” Singing alongside new compositional depths in Tyler’s production is what sets Cherr y Bomb apart from the rest of his discography Fuck, I can ’ t sing,” he proclaims a t t h e b e g i n n i n g o f t h e e xc e l l e n t s i n g l e , “ Fu c k i n g Young/Perfect ” And while he’s no Isaac Hayes, Tyler light-
histories and spiritual threads through the loom of his musical vision, perhaps there was too much similarity In the end, the playing, while effortless, was self-contained and the virtuosity incidental And while one may never fully see into the heart of another, it was impossible to watch Savall and not mourn for him Since facing i m m e a s u r a b l e personal tragedy in 2011, we may only speculate about the depth of his loss and stand in awe at his creative resolve Having recently lost someone close to me, I am admittedly primed to give such a reading, but I couldn’t help but feel the melancholy rose of his heart wilting just a little under the spotlight It made me want to hear him play alone, if only to let that heart sing without obstacle, so that it might throw open a window into its own unrecoverable past

With this realization or projection, call it what you will in tow, I left the concert hall berating myself for the above criticisms (I share them only in the interest of full disclosure) It was a sobering reminder that there is far more to gain in this world than there is to lose
And at any rate, the world has gained so much from Savall already that one mere lackluster performance will leave no dent in his legacy

ens his voice enough (with the aid of the occasional filter) to ser ve his emotive ends, surrounding himself with softjazz production and a slew of talented female vocalists, without ever letting himself get lost in the mix Even when other singers dominate the foreground, we never forget we ’ re in Tyler’s world, a place that becomes increasingly coherent as he learns to meld his skills behind a soundboard with those on the microphone
For all of its slow jams (of which “2Seater” might be the best), the album constantly reminds us that it’s a Tyler, the Creator project “Cherr y Bomb,” a batshit crazy punk song with drowned out vocals, comes immediately after “Find Your Wings,” a composition that would not sound out of place coming from a church choir Even in his tamest of moments, Tyler wants us to recall that he’s still the guy who wrote a popular song with the hook, “kill people, burn shit, fuck school ” And while he shows emotional maturity on certain Cherr y Bomb cuts, Tyler still uses homophobic slurs, mistakenly thinking it contributes to his image of refusing to follow the rules (perhaps a habit he picked up from Eminem, whom he openly cites as an influence)

If you are one of my regular readers and I like to think that those exist, outside of my mother you have probably noticed that I have been on a bit of a superhero kick, as of late Well, I am going to keep the trend going See, I have been itching to write about something since April Fool’s Day
In a huge move, 20th Century Fox announced that the upcoming Deadpool film, starring Ryan Reynolds, will be rated R And around the interwebs, fans rejoiced
Casual fans may recognize Deadpool from XMen Origins: Wolverine And a lucky few of you may have managed to bury that film deep down in the darkest crevices of your repressed memory Thankfully, the monstrosity that we were presented in the original Wolverine stand-alone film is completely retconned or, simply, ignored in this new iteration
For those of you unfamiliar with the character, you should do yourself a favor and look up the Deadpool test footage (trust me, it’s incredible) The animated footage features Reynolds’ voice, and paints a good picture of what Deadpool is all about: unpredictable wit, schizophrenic humor and extreme violence
The anti-hero’s primary abilities include a healing power, expertise in all forms of combat and weaponry and unparalleled unpredictability, and depending on what you ’ re reading, maybe more Basically, think Wolverine plus Batman plus The Joker
Altogether, these come together with incredibly potential for the big screen However, many fans feared that the film would be given a rating of PG-13 the norm for superhero films and would not be able to live up to the graphic violence and obscene wisecracks that they have come to expect from the Merc with a Mouth In a brilliant marketing move, 20th Century Fox (who owns the rights to all X-Men and Fantastic Four related Marvel properties) released a mock interview between Entertainment News reporter, Mario Lopez and star, Ryan Reynolds Released on April Fool’s Day, the interview seems to reveal that the film will have a PG-13 rating, in order to remain, as Mario puts it, “family friendly ” Just as Reynolds tries to blur the term, Deadpool enters behind Lopez, unnoticed, and knocks him out cold with a stage light, emphasized

with a cheery “Fuck you, Slater,” a reference to the 90s classic, Saved by the Bell
appeal to everybody His offbeat humor, schizophrenic tendencies and fourth-wallbreaking make for a polarizing character Many people view him as innovative, unique and refreshing, and love him for it Meanwhile, many people will also view him as being just too weird His comics have a wellestablished, passionate cultlike following And the majority of this following believes that if a Deadpool film is going to be done right, it has to be violent and gory enough for that R rating

Are they risking losing a lot of their fanbase by excluding children from the theaters? Yeah, probably But given the traits of the character, it was unlikely that Deadpool would have appealed much to this audience, regardless No, he is designed for a specific audience one mature enough to handle darker themes and the complexities that come with understanding a psychologically shattered and immensely complicated antihero
itch for the meeting of the world of my present and the world of my past I want the comics that I was super into as a kid repackaged in the tone that I thirst for as an adult This converging of sensibilities is largely why Christopher Nolan’s take on Batman was so wildly successful
But what makes him most distinct among his super peers is his self-awareness See, Deadpool knows and understands that he is a character
He frequently will speak directly to the audience in sarcastic, mocking asides By breaking the fourth wall so often, Deadpool becomes private buddies with the audience
Now that you ’ ve gotten some context, let’s get to why I’m so excited This marks the first time that a major Marvel or DC superhero has received a big screen adaptation with an R rating since 1989’s The Punisher And it’s a great move, because it considers what the character’s audience is going to be and how it will most successfully appeal to that audience Deadpool is not a character that is going to

If Deadpool is going to be a box office success, it has to recreate the same kind of cult following that the comics have created And you start that by appealing to that pre-established audience That is why you see so many film adaptations in Hollywood nowadays, because you know that no matter how good or bad the film is, you have a pre-established audience that is going to see it, no matter what And if 20th Century Fox allowed Deadpool to have anything less than an R rating, they would have alienated a significant portion of said fan base
Most importantly, though, having an R-rating makes Deadpool distinct among the genre I have mentioned this in previous columns, but I
If the big screen version of Deadpool is going to recreate and expand upon its contingency of comic book fans, it needs to give us something that others cannot Leaving the theater, we need to be thinking, “Holy shit, that was unlike anything else and I need more of it ” And, as it had to be, that is going to be accomplished by its increased violence, absurdity and complexity
With an incredible docket of superhero films waiting to be released in the next few years, it can be difficult to choose one to get most excited about In a genre that is risking oversaturation at an alarming rate, this upcoming Deadpool film is looking like it should provide a refreshing take on what it means to be “ super ”

Indiais still recovering from the gruesome rape case that happened in the December of 2012, an attack that Justice Yogesh Khanna said “shocked the collective conscience of India ” A 23-year-old woman was returning with her male friend from a movie when they got a lift from four men who were gallivanting around the city of New Delhi in a bus The men quickly beat the young man and then took turns raping the woman They even inserted an iron rod in her, eventually leading to her death a few weeks later in a hospital in Singapore The Additional Sessions Judge Yogesh Khanna, who heard this case, made the above statement while issuing his decision
This unfortunate and hideous incident has raised questions and anger among the citizens of India regarding the gender inequality that women are subjected to everyday Every other day women are attacked and almost nothing is done about it Treating women like mere objects of entertainment and disregarding their human rights is creating outrage in the country, especially among younger citizens People are now demanding solutions to this inequality
Man and woman are two wheels of a chariot that will run smoothly only if both the wheels are equal Discrimination against women has been a root problem in India for a very long time, and it is high time something is done to eradicate it Over 48 percent of the Indian population is com-

President Obama would h a v e t o c o n v i n c e e n o u g h GOP members, who generally oppose the negotiations, to support the deal This would be a tall, potentially insurmountable, task one that Obama certainly didn’t want to face
sional oversight was turned by t h e a d m i n i s t r a t i o n t o i t s ’

prised of women according to the 2011 Census report, but how many of them are allowed to freely exercise their human rights? How many of them are given equal and fair opportunities to prove themselves?
The answer to the above question is rather disheartening Only 65 5 percent of women as compared to 82 1 percent of males are literate in India; only 15 4 percent of Indian urban women work; the sex ratio in India is 943 females for every 1000 males, which is higher as compared to the 2001 Census report but is still a low ratio as socially evil practices like female feticide and female infanticide are still practiced in some parts of the country
Various solutions to gender inequality are cropping up through debates and discussions Better implementation of laws, deeper involvement of non-governmental organizations, encouraging more girls to get educated and generally strengthening the laws are some of them, but the most important solution that needs to be given attention is breaking through the barriers of the patriarchal Indian society Gender inequality and the importance given to patriarchy in India are very closely related
The attitudes of the families in India towards their female children need drastic transformation Educating a girl is considered a bad investment, as all she is required to do is stay home and look after the family Tradition demands that financial resources should rather be saved for her marriage, because, unfortunately, in some parts of India, people still believe in dowry Educating a boy, on the other hand, is considered very profitable because he is going to be the breadwinner and therefore the head of the family This perception that women cannot be breadwinners has to change This perception that women are mere objects of entertainment has to change
It is deeply rooted in the Indian culture and tradition that a woman is only meant to stay home, make meals and take care of her family What people fail to understand is that educating a woman is as important and maybe more important than educating a man Brigham Young once said “You educate a man; you educate a man You educate a woman; you educate a generation ” Yes, one of the many responsibilities of a woman is to nurture her family but if she is not educated, if she is not given opportunities to prove herself, she will never learn to voice her opinion, to stand up or herself and in turn teach her children to do the same It’s a vicious cycle that needs to be broken
It is not that the Indian Constitution does not provide for meaningful provisions Actually, it not only enshrines gender equality in the form of Fundamental Rights but also empowers the States to actively engage in positive discrimination in favor of women Article 14 declares equality and equal protection before the law for all, Article 15 states that the State will not discriminate against any citizen on any grounds and Article 39 entitles every individual the right to livelihood and the right to equal pay However, speedy disposal of cases with better and faster implementation of the laws is critical
In 2007, Mrs Pratibha Patil was appointed the first female President of India In 2009, Chandha Kochhar was appointed as CEO and M D of ICICI Bank, the first woman to head a bank in India In 2014, Mary Kom became the first Indian woman to win a gold medal at the Asian Games held in South Korea
Yes, India is making progress because women in India are progressing professionally, but it is not deep enough to reach the heart of the country
Social evils like female feticide, female infanticide, weak labor force participation and rape are still very prevalent Cutting through the customs and traditions is definitely a huge challenge for the Government of India, but without amendments in the law and transformation of public opinion through new programs, gender inequality will seep deeper and deeper into the system

President Obama is the real winner on the Iran nuclear agreement
The basic frame work of any deal to curb Iran’s nuclear activity involves lifting economic sanctions imposed on Iran that were designed successfully to cripple the Iranian economy and bring the governing regime to the negotiating table over Iran’s nuclear activi t y In i t i

authority to unilaterally waive sanctions in a legitimate manner so long as at least 34 Democratic senators support the deal This is a relatively mundane challenge for the President and far easier than having to appeal to the GOP for support Moreover, the goal should have always been diplomacy over conflict with Iran It’s h a rd
would be able to develop a nuclear weapon in complete secrecy from the United States and its’ allies If Iran cheats on the deal, the world will know
The accepted compromise does little restrict Obama and hinder his deal. In it offers previously sought after legitim to negotiations between the administration and Iran

After the Obama administration recognized that many congressional Democrats also wanted some form of review over the final agreement with Ir a n , t h e re b y p r ov i d i n g Republicans with a veto-proof majority to oppose any deal that fails to provide for congressional assessment, Obama swiftly accepted the negotiated legislation put forth by Corker and Cardin

So, there is a learning curve to adjust to ”
However, Bowman said fitness levels for the team are good overall and that the team has been making strides in its adjustment
In terms of players to look for at the event this weekend, senior Elyse Wilkinson and junior Caroline Kellner have both performed well at the start of their seasons in the 800m and 10,000m respectively
Others strong players at the start of the season have been juniors Cam Goodman, DeeDee Akpaete and seniors Katie Woodford, Eve Bishop and Zena Kolliesuah Freshmen Taylor Baker and Taysia Radoslav have both had strong starts to their first outdoor seasons, with Radoslav breaking the freshman record the 400m hurdles in her first race
While both Bowman and Taylor are happy to play host this weekend, Bowman said he is especially happy since this will provide the Red with opportunity to see performances from those who have not had as much of a chance to compete this season
“This week we have a smaller meet and looking for production [and] impact from those that have not had as many reps as others, those perhaps competing in only their second comp of the outdoor year, ” Bowman said “We have a team with some great stars but to be successful, we’ll need the whole group to impact and get better They appear to be moving in that direction ”

Though the main character, Ray Kinsella, is not a particularly religious man, the plot of the novel is very much centered around his faith in both “good” people and the “good” game of baseball The field Ray builds in his backyard is frequented by spirits of baseball players, but only certain people can see them One of the so-called non-believers is Ray’s twin brother “Richard sits with us awhile and eventually walks away, a perplexed expression on his face, like that of a pagan watching, but not comprehending, a religious ceremony, ” Kinsella writes Baseball certainly is a game of believers It is worshipped by many and hated by more, but the worshippers are devout beyond imagination I was browsing around for some outside information on this topic and I found a New York Times article from 2012 about a class at Ne w York University taught by John Sexton, the president of the university called “Baseball as a Road to God ” Sexton was realistic about the trajectory of the course, though “Baseball’s not ‘the’ road to God For most of us, it isn’t ‘ a ’ road to God But it’s a way to notice, to cause us to live more slowly and to watch more keenly and thereby to discover the specialness of our life and our being, and, for some of us, something more than our being ” There is a unique calculated calmness that surrounds the game of baseball that I think Sexton gets at We watch baseball not to be exhilarated by hard hits or wowed by constant incredible plays, but to bask in a game that is entirely conscious of its slow and rhythmic nature It takes a certain measure
of focus to sit through a nineinning game, not unlike sitting through a religious service This intense concentration on the game itself is why so many baseball fans keep score when they go to the games That intimate connection to the game extends to the community you are sharing it with, the congregation of people that looks and sees exactly what you do, that rises to its feet in rapturous joy when a ball travels to the warning track and that gasps in disappointment when it is caught
I’m still not sure if I believe in any of this, but I think it would be a comforting feeling if I did I feel the same way about my religion
There are a thousand things about Catholicism with which I disagree and I, therefore, can ’ t really consider myself a true Catholic But sometimes I do wish I believed in some spiritual higher power, because it would be soothing to know it was there
In Shoeless Joe, Kinsella gives his view of religion “It seems to me that a truly religious person would let his life be example enough, would not let his religion inter fere with being a human being ”
If the presence of a God helps a person be kind and forgiving, then religion is succeeding But being a good person can come from within as well and, in that case, religion has nothing to do with it The nature of community that baseball invests in may be why the sport lends itself to a kind of religious experience
But after the game, when the stadium floodlights turn off, what truly matters is how the individual conducts him or herself Baseball players fail infinitely more than they succeed and so do all of us Getting back up by the power of your own will is a triumph that needs no spiritual justification

This weekend, both the men ’ s and women ’ s track and field teams will host the Upstate Challenge, the first outdoor meet to take place in Ithaca this season The meet is set to take place on Saturday at the Robert J Kane sports complex
Men’s head coach Nathan Taylor said he is looking forward to playing host this weekend after the first meet that was supposed to take place in Ithaca was cancelled due to inclement weather
“It’s always great to host a meet at home particularly when the weather promises to be good,” Taylor said “It give every person on the team a chance to compete in prepara-

tion for the major meets that lie ahead ”
While the men have had a strong start to their outdoor season, the graduation of many key athletes last year has left the team on somewhat shaky ground The outdoor season, however, has just started and Taylor said that he thinks some of his best players will shine as the season goes on
“After having what was arguably the best team in the history of the Ivy League last year, graduation hit the team very hard and both the athletes and coaches have had a challenging season so far,” Taylor said “We are all convinced that our stars will stand out over the next month at the Heps, IC4As and NCAAs ”
According to Taylor, some his strongest players are his throwers, hurdlers, mid-distance runners and vertical jumpers, including throwers senior Stephen Mozia and sophomore Rudy Winkler, who Taylor said are “ among the very best in the country ”
Sophomore pole vaulter Grant Sisserson has also been a major contributor for the Red in his two years on the hill Taylor said he sees him and junior Max Hairston being strong contributors during the weekend as well
On the women ’ s side, head coach Rich Bowman has been working to get his players adjusted after the transition from the indoor to outdoor season
“Most would like to pick up right where they left off regarding indoors moving to outside but adjustments must be made,” Bowman said “The track is bigger now 200 meters indoor [as opposed to] 400 meters outdoor It is windy outside and we have several new events that athletes are getting used to [such as the] 3000m steeplechase, the discus, the hammer, the longer sprint races and the 4x100 relay

As the weather continues to warm and the school year draws to a close, the Cornell equestrian team is set to make one final trip to the arena before officially ending the season at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association National Championships at the end of the month
This Saturday, all 30 members of the Red will travel to Briar wood Farm in Ringoes, New Jersey to face the seven other universities in the Ivy League Because the conference does not regularly compete against each other during the season, the Ivy Show which is held
“This
annually is the one chance for the Ivy League to come together for a day of friendly competition
last season ’ s Ivy show
It’s
Dartmouth and Brown, historically, have been the Red’s fiercest competitors
Cornell suffered a close loss to Dartmouth at

“One thing that’s cool about Ivies is that it’s a little more open, ” said senior Sarah Cochran “I think we have more classes we can show [in] ” Indeed, the entire team will get a chance to show in one class each, according to head coach Joanna Novakovic ’03 Cochran, who recently moved up into the beginner walk trot canter division, has not had the opportunity to show since Cornell’s home show in February and said she is looking for ward to competing again in her new division
“This will be my last show with the team, ” Cochran said “It’s going to be a lot of team bonding ” Junior Kaitlin Smith, who competes in the open division, has been in every show Cornell has taken part in this year However, the Red has a good number of talented open riders, so she has not always been
able to compete herself Smith said she is looking forward to having the entire team at the Ivy Show
“We have some of the top open riders in the nation,” Smith said “Ivies is a great opportunity for the team to come together ” Because there is room for everyone to show this weekend, many of the squad’s newer members will also get the opportunity to spend time in the ring For sophomore Nicole Zitzmann, the Ivy Show will be only her fifth with the team However, she said she enjoys celebrating the successes of her teammates as much as her own
“It makes me really happy seeing everyone do so well,” Zitzmann said Although the Ivy Show does not factor into any of the squads’ IHSA scores, Cochran said her team takes pride in its performance at the competition
“Cornell cares about it a lot because we are part of the Ivy League and we are a strong contender,” Cochran said
When I was growing up, I hated going to church My family was not particularly religious, but I was brought up Catholic and that included attending religion classes after school on Wednesdays and getting the church bulletin stamped every Sunday to show our teachers that we had, in fact, been there in the presence of God or whatever that meant This

ludicrous notion that if we didn’t go to church that we would be reprimanded really stuck with me, and it was probably why I was constantly thinking about being somewhere else while fidgeting on the uncomfortable wooden pews of our church
At that age, the one place I could always stand to be at was a baseball field or even near one If some higher power created us, then he must ’ ve been responsible for baseball too and for that, I’ll always be thankful After reading W P Kinsella’s novel Shoeless Joe (which was also the inspiration for the timeless classic Field of Dreams), I have thought about baseball and religion, if they have anything to do with one another and whether or not sports, like religion, can help us become better people
The novel is largely a fantastical one, based in rural Iowa, where the grass is always
