Members of the Cornell football team expressed their support for Northwestern University football players, who have been battling against their university for the right to unionize in a historic National Labor Relations Board hearing that concluded Tuesday
Arguing against the NCAA rules that categorize collegiate football players as “ amateurs ” who do not qualify for employee benefits, the National College Players Association filed a petition on behalf of the Northwestern players that could potentially lead to landmark changes in national policies regarding collegiate athletes

Statler Receives Recognition for Green Ef fort s
By AIMEE CHO Sun Staff Writer
The Statler Hotel received the 2014 Good Earthkeeping Award an award given by the New York State Hospitality and Tourism Association for eco-friendly hotels which it will formally receive at a March 3 banquet
Each year NYSHTA selects one hotel to receive the award as recognition for developing a culture of sustainability and environmentally friendly management practices, according to Nicole Meneveau ’15, a member of the EarthView EcoLeader Team that has been working on sustainability initiatives at the Statler
Rick Adie ’75, general manager of the Statler Hotel, said he and the students have been working with The Hersha Group a hotel management, investment and development firm since last Februar y to implement the EarthView sustainability program
The program examines the environmental, financial and social impacts of sustainability initiatives, according to Adie
Adie said that one of the Statler’s biggest conservation projects was the Energy Conservation Initiative, which included the installation of occupancy sensors to control heating ventilation and air conditioning
“When the meeting rooms aren ’ t occupied, heating and air conditioning aren ’ t running We also put variable speed drivers [which control the speed of motors] on kitchen exhaust systems and dish machines,” Adie said “These are the sustainability initiatives that you don’t really see but they have a huge impact ”
The Statler has implemented green initiatives in its dining and conference services, according to Maria Casanova ’14, a member of the EarthView Eco-Leader Team
Foreign food
“The kitchen tries to use as many local and sustainable vendors as possible Everything is compostable,” she said “We changed the banquet tables to be linen-less, which saved thousands of dollars And we don’t use bottled water for events we use refillable pitchers ”
The paper products in the guest rooms such as toilet paper, paper towels and tissues now have a higher percentage of recycled content, according to Adie
Another sustainability initiative involves working with the organization Clean the World, which helps recycle toiletries in the hospitality industry, The Sun previously reported
According to Adie, housekeepers collect gently-used soaps and shampoos left in the guest rooms, and the toiletries are then sent to Clean the World where they are sanitized and shipped to homeless shelters and foreign countries to people in need of them

Comedy Club L ook s to Set
Itself A part From O thers
Group to focus on stand-up, written humor
By ANDREW LEE Sun Staff Writer
The newly registered Cornell Comedy Club an organization with a focus on stand-up and written humor will begin holding weekly meetings Tuesday
Conceived last Spring, C3 saw several of its initial members graduate and did not hold fall meetings due to issues with recruitment and scheduling, according to club president Roma Patel ’16 As a result, the club was not registered with the University last semester
Patel said the only significant change she plans on making to C3’s formula is implementing a tryout process to perform
“The only thing we ’ re changing this year is that we are making the whole process a little more formal and selective,” Patel said Silverman said the group is seeking to increase its visibility on campus
“You don’t need
to have any prior experience to have a good time.” Ly l e B e r s t e i n ’ 1 6
Lyle Berstein ’16 said C3 differs from many other comedy groups on campus because it takes a more holistic approach to comedy techniques
“We do everything, from stand-up comedy to improv,” said Berstein “We are also working to create comedy videos for Youtube ”
Marguerite Silverman ’16, vice president of C3, added that the club hopes to set itself apart from other comedy groups on campus
“Our goals for this semester are primarily to introduce and establish a new style of comedy on campus that differs from other groups in that our focus is on stand-up and written comedy as opposed to improv and sketches
Last spring, weekly meeting consisted of developing jokes and practicing stand-up routines, according to Patel
“People would contact us and ask us to perform, and we want to keep on doing that,” she said
“[We] want to increase our membership and become a well-known comedy group on campus and just have a good time with fellow performers and lovers of comedy,” Silverman said Cornell students have already expressed interest in C3’s return
“I think that there is a distinct difference between a comedy club and a comedy group that performs,” Millicent Kastenbaum ’16 said “I think comedy clubs service a unique niche that comedy groups do not ”
Kastenbaum said that the club may appeal to students that do not have the time to perform comedy and would instead prefer to meet in an informal setting
“They may want to learn more about it and meet with others who are interested in comedy as well,” Kastenbaum said “And I think this is where something like a comedy club comes in ”
The organization encourages anyone slightly interested in comedy to join and attend its weekly meetings, according to Berstein
“You don’t need to have any prior experience to have a good time,” he said

UNION

employees, according to Engstrom
“They drive ticket prices, merchandise sales and other profit generators associated with athletic teams, ” Engstrom said “Why aren ’ t they compensated, especially when they struggle to finish their degrees or afford basic living expenses?”
Universities such as Northwestern often make millions of dollars in profit while athletes are left without compensation, according to Niniva Kinikini ’17, a member of Cornell’s football team
“Northwestern’s football revenue between 2003 and 2012 totaled $235 million and its expenses totaled $159 million,” Kinikini said “When you do the math, the compensation for each player is not nearly as much as the [profit that] universities make ”
Though the NCAA places restrictions on how many hours football players can be expected to spend on the field a policy which they have highlighted in their categorization of student-athletes as “ amateurs ” rather than professionals these limitations rarely reflect the time commitment made by players, according to Kinikini
“The amount of time athletes spend preparing [for] and recovering from team activities such as workouts, film and meetings is probably is the same amount of time they spend doing those activities,” said Kinikini “Essentially, athletes are doing double the ‘official’ time allowed to be spent on athletics ”
Other Cornell football team members echoed the sentiments of the Northwestern team in criticizing NCAA policies regarding student-athletes, according to Jesse Heon ’14, a member of Cornell’s football team
“I believe the monopoly that the NCAA has on college athletes has become ridiculous to say the least,” Heon said “All the revenues coming to the NCAA are earned by employees student-athletes that incur no cost to their overarching organization ”
The actions of the Northwestern football team and the National College Players Association are “blazing a trail for the rest of college athletes,” Kinikini said, and have highlighted the ways in which colleges prioritize profit over the scholarship of student-athletes
“People do not truly understand how difficult it is to manage athletics and academics, and be successful in both,” Kinikini said
Despite their support of the move to increase the rights of studentathletes, Engstrom said he felt that there is little likelihood of similar actions towards unionization at Cornell
“I don’t think this could happen at Cornell,” Engstrom said “While we spend just as much time and effort as Division 1 [Football Bowl Subdivision] guys like the [Northwestern] Wildcats, we are all nonscholarship athletes and we specifically attended an Ivy League school to be the quintessential student-athlete We don’t expect to be compensated or felt sorry for and we embrace that ”
The regional director of the National Labor Relations Board is expected to decide whether the student athletes will be considered employees within the next four to six weeks, according to The Chicago Tribune
Post-Abortion Group Will O f fer Emotional Support

She said she has recently refocused her attention on abortion issues due to “various personal interactions” in her work
Haskins said she was involved in a post-abortion support group when she was a student at the University of Massachusetts; this is the first time she will run the support group at Cornell
The post-abortion support group at the University of Massachusetts was in high demand, according to Haskins
“ There were always more women interested in participating in the support group than we had space for,” she said
Cornell’s support group will be limited to twelve women and those who wish to participate are encouraged to sign up early, according to Haskins
“The size is limited to create intimacy, trust and enough time and space for ever yone to be heard,” she said
Women who have just had an abortion can experience conflicting emotions such as “grief, relief, joy and sadness,” Weiss said
All the personal factors involved in a woman ’ s decision to have an abortion contribute to such varied emotional reactions, according to Haskins
“There are so many different reasons abortions happen,”
Haskins said “Those myriad reasons create a myriad of possible emotions and responses ”
Haskins said the group will be tailored to meet the needs of participants
“I will be feeling out the participants for what it is they need,” she said “I think there is a great need in the community for such a group ”
Weiss said she hopes the group will meet a need in the community that is often goes unacknowl-
edged
“Too often, people are silenced about their experiences with abortion,” Weiss said “I believe that creating supportive spaces that help people navigate their experiences is beneficial and meets a real need, one that is rarely voiced ”
The support group will follow a seven week schedule, meeting weekly on Sundays

There’s nothing like a little curveball right before you ’ re about to go on a date This winter break, two nights before I was meant to go to a Broadway show (aptly named First Date: The Musical) with a boy named Dave, he graced me with a text message that made my heart sink: “Yo, I copped a ticket Try to get one and maybe I can switch with the guy next to you ”

The romantic in me died a little bit He bought a ticket without me? Were we not going together? Was this some sort of test of my interest? The only thing I knew for sure was that there is nothing romantic about the verb “copped,” and there never will be
I did what any confused person in my position would do; I struggled to think of a response, wrote three unsatisfactory drafts and then didn’t respond for four hours
In the end, I decided to go to the show
As the lights dimmed, it all hit me: I had literally purchased a ticket to this show with my own money to sit two rows behind this guy and stare at the back of his head This was not a date This was an act of desperation on my part
gled to reach a consensus, I realized something: Maybe it didn’t matter
Social norms are changing Dates today seem to defy any sort of formal definition or checklist, so much so that when a guy does go out of his way to let a girl know that he considers their hangout a date, it can place a lot of pressure on a situation in which people are just starting to get to know each other
When we hang out with someone new, we should focus on feeling comfortable and having fun. Instead, we often find ourselves tr ying to decode intentions while looking to behavior for clues.
The first song ended and people clapped as I fought back tears I had never felt so incredibly stupid And then, suddenly, it happened In the middle of a Broadway musical, Dave leapt out of his seat, over a row of people, and landed in the unclaimed seat next to me He put his arm around me
When I got home that night, my friends attacked me with a series of questions, the most of important of which being: Was it a date?
The truth was, I had no idea But the girls wouldn’t take that for an answer They fired a checklist of questions at me: Did he pay? Did he look nice? Smell good? Hold any doors open for me? Walk me home? (No, yes, yes, yes, yes)
These questions were meant to define what a date was But after answering each one, I was still clueless As my friends strug-
When we hang out with someone new, we should focus on feeling comfortable and having fun Instead, we often find ourselves trying to decode intentions while looking to behavior for clues But when we get caught up in the technicalities of who paid for what or asked whom to go where, we lose sight of the more important checklist: Did we have a good time? Did we feel respected? Do we want to see this person again? Pseudo-dates come in all shapes and sizes They can be coincidental, like when we realize that we are hanging out with a certain person alone for the first time They can be a c c i d e n t a l , like when we run into someone unexpectedly and wind up catching up for an hour These instances may not involve door holding or any of the formalities that we associate with a “date,” but that doesn’t make them any less valuable They all involve the opportunity to see how we vibe with another person I’m not suggesting that we keep our intentions deliberately vague, or that we put up with someone who refuses to treat us to anything, lest it be too incriminating a gesture There must be transparency at some point But in the beginning, when things are budding and fragile, a little bit of ambiguity can go a long way towards keeping things light and making both parties feel at ease A couple of low-pressure pseudo-dates and a little bit of wiggle room never hurt anybody

This past February break, I had the pleasure of meeting the girl my now ex-boyfriend hooked up with a few times while he was studying abroad Don’t get me wrong, we were in an open relationship and I was kind of dating two guys pretty seriously at once, so technically he did nothing wrong But anyone who has been in an open relationship knows that “technically” doing nothing wrong means you still have a right to be upset Sure, I’m a bit of a hypocrite, but yes, my feelings were actually hurt
I later found out that said ex-boyfriend had been in contact with another girl while we were actually officially dating I hated this girl Like her name would be mentioned and I would become a literal cartoon character with smoke coming out of my nose and ears because I was convinced she was tearing our relationship apart Luckily, I’m now friends with the girl (she’s awesome), and have come to realize that she was not, in fact, the one ruining my relationship; my boyfriend was Some people come to college and have amazing, successful relationships My brother (the lucky asshole) and his girlfriend are one such couple They were friends freshman year, started dating sophomore year and have been together ever since They made it work when he was abroad, when she was abroad and

even after they graduated They love each other, take care of each other and really make each other happy
And then there are those of us who date really terrible people First, there was the cheater: My ex-boyfriend who cheated on me during our relationship and cheats on his current girlfriend, (sorry for that time he watched me shower via FaceTime in December) I swear we were happy at some point, but his fear of being alone means he can ’ t really do the commitment thing
Then, there was the guy who wouldn’t text me back for weeks at a time, but somehow still thought we were “dating ” After six weeks of that bullshit, I told him I had promised myself to someone else when he invited me to his date night in front of his friends (kind of an asshole move, but whatever) He still pulls the same text-ignoring thing (who knew a, “Hi wanna grab a drink tonight?” text was so loaded), so I guess you could say we don’t talk anymore
After that there was the resentful guy With him, it was amazing when it was good, and just god-awful when he got upset And lastly there was the guy who kind of forced me to stay with him after the summer He was great, but a summer fling should stay that way
I’m not even saying that college relationships don’t ever work out. I’m just posing the idea that perhaps when we start hooking up with someone, we should keep it at that no labels and no next steps forward
Around the beginning of this school year, I looked at my past relationships and said to myself, “Wow, you have such a great track record!” Truly, I applaud myself Maybe I’m the worst girlfriend/dater of all time (I don’t think I am), or maybe we ’ re just programmed to NOT date in college For every one couple like my brother and his girlfriend, I watch countless others (all of mine ) fail miserably
So I would like to pose the idea that we are not supposed to date right now It’s not a new concept, (my mom has been telling me to play the field for forever go mom!), and I’m not saying be like me and have sex with someone different every weekend I’m not even saying that college relationships
Wdon’t ever work out I’m just posing the idea that perhaps when we start hooking up with someone, we should keep it at that no labels and no next steps forward I spent a lot of time hung up on my shitty ex-boyfriend before I realized he’s more than a shitty ex; he’s just a bad person whose self-destructive attitude took me down with him And even though I joke about all these horrible guys I dated (they really weren ’ t all that bad), they still sucked up a ton of my time
Since I stopped dating people, I’ve done more yoga, improved my GPA, spent more time with my housemates and made a lot of amazing friends Most importantly, I’ve learned to deal with hardships in my life alone I’m not saying these things are because I don’t have a boyfriend, but that they might be because I don’t have a boyfriend less time focusing on someone else inevitably means I get to spend more time focusing on myself So maybe, just maybe, we should take our four years of college to focus a little more on ourselves (whether that means having a ton of sex or having no sex at all), and a little less on finding a partner Just an idea; take it or leave it

hen I’m writing an article, there are times when I forget that not everyone who reads them knows who I am (though at this point, I think a significant number of people do) My sense of humor is often very sarcastic and joking, appearing misogynistic on the surface but, in reality, not actually so I’ve come to realize that, so from here on out, any such jokes made will be obviously sarcastic instead of just subtly
On the topic of humor, I find that nothing sets the mood better than laughing Have you ever been in bed with someone who’s so uptight and serious?
Someone who just cannot seem to unwind a bit and realize that frankly, sex is supposed to be fun? This isn’t a job interview but if it were, the only position available is missionary (though I imagine there will be some openings soon *ba-dum-kssh *) See? Hopefully, I just made you laugh Horny, yet? Well you shouldn’t be, because that would be awkward
actually happened):
Method 1: Give a slight scare, then immediately redeem yourself. If that aforementioned person were to climb on top of you and say, “I’m going to give you the clap” and then proceed to applaud you during sex, then chances are he or she is someone worth talking to outside of the bedroom Or better yet, tell him or her: “This is the best sex I’ve had since the operation ” Even if the sex physically is not that great, you’ll enjoy yourself more because that’s simply what laughing does:
Passionate love-making aside, what are you going to get out of a standard sexual encounter that you cannot get with your best friends, Left and Right Hand?
Today is a little how-to guide on lightening that bedroom mood, and trust me when I say that it’s something everyone could use Honestly, what’s sex without a light-hearted atmosphere? Passionate love-making aside, what are you going to get out of a standard sexual encounter that you cannot get with your best friends, the Left and Right Hand? If you actually want to interact with another human being, then get ready to put your funny bone inside her, too There is nothing sexier to me than a girl who can take a joke and dish one right back because I know that I enjoy her company other than just for sex
Let’s say you have a bed buddy who you only speak to once a week with the words, “Hey girl, you out?” What are you going to say to that person the rest of the time? Nothing You’ll awkwardly look down at your phone or wave to a friend who’s not even there when you walk by her in Duffield Here’s how you fix that, based on personal experiences (yes, these all
anytime, anywhere
Method 2: Admit and own your deficiencies Let’s say you ’ re a little late when you were supposed to meet up with said girl This line works every (almost never) time: “Hey, I know I’m late, but at least I always cum early!” Then hold your hand out for a high-five and pray she finds that douchey side of you at least a little attractive Let’s face it, you two have been naked on top of each other, using dirty talk not acceptable at most dinner tables Humility was shed a long time ago, so there’s no reason why now ’ s the time to be serious
Method 3: Catch the other person off guard For instance, ask, Hey what’s the difference between you and a bowl of mashed potatoes?” Then answer, “I didn’t put my penis in you last night ” Works Every Time
Obviously, there’s a time and place for everything As I
have briefly mentioned before, and always try to put in perspective in most of my articles, there is a distinct difference between casual sex (or standard sex with someone you ’ re dating) and making love Things that are acceptable for the one night with that girl from Level B are not acceptable every time with your girlfriend of three years And they shouldn’t be, because no one wants to be sweaty and out of breath after an hour of some of the deepest, most soul-binding sex you ’ ve ever had, only to lean over her shoulder and go, “I hope you brought your raincoat because you are getting SOAKED, girl!” No, just no (And frankly, that isn’t acceptable to say to that girl from Level B either )
That does not mean that humorous sex, however, is reserved purely for the casual bangers If you like this person enough to at the very least make yourself exclusive with him or her, then you two should be comfortable enough asking each other, while in the position, “Hey, why do they call it doggie-style? My dog hated it when we tried this ” Or, ladies, nickname his penis Excalibur And if he doesn ’ t get the joke and immediately try to roll over and hide, proceed to remind him exactly what happened in The Sword in the Stone
The point is that there should be no such thing as boring sex, regardless of what your current relationship status is What I find sexy may not be what you do, but from personal experience there are a lot of people who want nothing more than to feel good inside and out And if blowing raspberries into her sides and tickling her until she falls off the bed does the trick, then just go for it

unassuming inside as it is outside
When I walked in, I was underwhelmed by the lack of tables and chairs in the restaurant –– or more precisely, their nonexistence –– and the whitewashed walls with sad stripes of yellow, blue and pink smeared upon them
Food orders are taken by checking off the items you want on a slip of paper I chose the pollo box, which consists of b

d w i t h Sp a n i s h r i c e , refried pinto beans, seasonal fresh tomato salsa, seasonal slaw, avocado, yogurt sauce and lime
As I sat down on one of the few benches in the restaurant, I noticed the chalkboard above the cash register It listed all of the ingredients the restaurant uses and their sources –– all local The peppers, tomatoes and onions are from Indian Creek Farm, the cheese is from Hillcrest Dairy and the greens are from Lucky Dog Farm –– all of which are based in Ithaca or nearby companies and farms Mexeo does beat Viva when it comes to locally sourcing its food: Only the tofu and beans at Viva are locally sourced So d
r s t impression of Mexeo, I grew to be genuinely excited to try the
The coleslaw, consisting of only pickled purple cabbage, was good enough; the rice and beans were generic And the salsa didn’t appear to have any spices or juice at all: It was just a mix of raw, diced green peppers, onion and tomato The highlight of the meal was the chicken It nearly fell off the bone, and the chipotle citrus sauce added real character to the meal
S e r v i c e Mexeo is a one-man show, which is an impressive feat However, the restaurant could probably benefit from a few extra hands in the kitchen Still, the food came out quickly, and there was a steady stream of people coming in and out for lunch The traffic was handled without delay
V
As a takeout joint, Mexeo does an adequate job While the space may lack character, tables and some utensils, the food does a good enough job of satisfying a hankering for generic Mexican food Though I would not go out of my way to hit up Mexeo, I would be willing to give it another try

Annie Clark’s status as a modern guitar god is now indie nerd gospel, but prior to the plaudits of 2012’s Strange Mercy, her talents with the six-string went a little more under-the-radar I was lucky enough to catch her performing at All Points West (basically Governor’s Ball Mach 1) following a blisteringly heavy set by the Arctic Monkeys, who were just then discovering how much they wanted to be Black Sabbath I went over to catch St Vincent on the recommendation of a friend and was a little wary of this porcelain doll-looking woman and her band of assorted woodwind instruments If St Vincent’s baroque pop setup was following Alex Turner and company ’ s stoner rock swagger, things were about to get a little sedate
All concerns were washed away when Clark sent the band away and began to shred through Jimi Hendrix’s take on “The Star-Spangled Banner ” Despite stopping and demurely alerting us that she was “just kidding,” Clark began to play The Beatles’ “Dig a Pony,” playing a soulful and delightfully spazzy version of the Let It Be track When she got to the solo, her guitar fizzed like Mentos thrown into a bottle of Diet Coke Clark’s recklessness as a player gave the song an electric feeling that was entirely alien from the Monkeys’ bass-heavy thud Here was a musician who, like a Miles Davis, let loose in order to discover something indelible and uniquely her own, twisting the guitar into a medium not only of notes and rhythms but of personality and emotion
However, on record, Annie Clark’s always struck me as a bit removed from her music The technical proficiency she’s exhibited over the course of her first three albums as St
Vincent is evident, but it’s always seemed so studied and strident Those aforementioned baroque arrangements got her associated with masters of refinement like The National and Sufjan Stevens, but I craved an album that showed St Vincent on the edge, peering inward and getting reckless St Vincent is that album
First, though, let’s talk about that album cover: whereas past releases saw Clark staring vaguely in the direction of the camera, distant and emotionless, St Vincent places Clark upon a throne pulled from a Star Trek set, her gaze fixed in a knowing, almost accusatory stare and her hair dyed white so that she looks like Storm from X-Men She looks dreamy and ethereal, but her stare gives off the impression that she can strike you down when she needs to, just as she does in her music Take “Huey Newton,” which juxtaposes a subdued A-section riding atop Dr Dre synths and a light stomp-shuffle beat with an absolutely thunderous guitar coda It’s a musical moment that rips the ground from under you, as Clark’s vocal goes from polite to sinister and her guitar growls with a sizzling ferocity
If there’s one thing to be said about St Vincent, it’s that Annie Clark seems to have had a shit-ton of fun making it Disparate sounds coalesce into puzzlingly addictive melodies, from the phased-out hi-hats and slinking synths that lend the paranoia-brewing “Rattlesnake” its ramshackle funk to the squiggly start-stop dialtone insanity that becomes “Bring Me Your Loves ” Every track features at least one left turn, and even when they aren ’ t huge ones “Regret,” for instance, sounds like Clark trying to write a
breakup track that could fit on Zeppelin IV St Vincent’s compositional know-how and lyrical acuity (“I’m afraid of heaven because I can ’ t stand the heights / I’m afraid of you because I can ’ t be left behind” she sings on “Regret”) keeps things fresh as always On “Digital Witness,” perhaps the album’s best example of Love This Giant collaborator David Byrne’s influence on Clark’s songwriting, she skewers both sound and the exhibitionism of social media, asking, “What’s the point of even sleeping? / If I can ’ t show you you can ’ t see me / Watch me jump right off the London Bridge ” There are still moments of austere beauty on St Vincent, and their relative rareness makes them all the better for it “I Prefer Your Love” is a slyly subversive ode to Clark’s mother whose love Clark prefers to Jesus’ that features an absolutely beautiful modulation as the bridge gives in to the chorus “Prince Johnny” sounds like a leftover from the Strange Mercy songwriting sessions, which is actually great because I totally forgot how awesome Strange Mercy was And then there’s the album finale “Severed Crossed Fingers,” which sounds like a relieved sigh after the mania of the album’s second half Its plaintive gorgeousness is far from straightforward, though, as Clark airs her insecurities (“Humiliated by age / Terrified of youth”) while pursuing a “calling (that) ain’t calling back ” After the assured adventurousness of St Vincent, I think Annie Clark is very close to being one of the “heroes on every barstool” she sings so tenderly about

Is Beck our generation’s Bob Dylan? Not only is he still going strong after more than 20 years of iconic music, but he’s also a seemingly different Beck with each record We have the DIY misfit Mellow Gold Beck, the flamboyant funk-master Midnite Vultures Beck and the skilled composer Guero and The Information Beck And those are only three of the countless yet distinctive personas he’s taken on with each musical outing Yet he remains shrouded in mystery, a figure of mystique who wears his feelings on his guitar strap but still manages to surprise us after all these years On the surface, Morning Phase Beck is quite similar to the mopey Sea Change Beck String arrangements, lush melodies and melancholy lyrics hark back to his careerdefining breakup album, the 2002 equivalent to Dylan’s Blood on the Tracks Beck himself even called this album a “companion piece” to Sea Change, recruiting not just a similar sound but also much of the same personnel Take opening track “Morning,” for example: it is so similar to Sea Change intro “The Golden Age,” down to the very first note, that one can ’ t help but equate the two albums upon first listen Morning Phase is like catching up with an old friend we haven’t heard from in years, and though he was
oh-so sad back then, he’s doing better now (but still plenty bummed out) This time around, the downtempo melodies are injected with a certain optimism that wasn ’ t there 12 years ago Morning Phase lets us get reacquainted with that somber troubadour from years past, but now things are looking up on a record that finds Beck in top form Where Sea Change was full of doubt in despair, Morning Phase suggests acceptance of life’s misgivings and a willingness to persevere As a whole, the record is a complete cycle of somberness; he starts moderately gloomy, sinks to his lowest point in the middle and rises from the ashes in the end After lead single “Blue Moon,” the record gets quite dark with “Unforgiven” and “Wave,” the end of which has him chanting the words “ wave ” and “isolation ” He starts to get out of this slump on “Turn Away,” which casts away self-doubt and encourages you to “ turn away from the weight of your own past ” The hopefulness that distinguishes Morning Phase from Sea Change culminates in the remarkable album ender “Waking Light,” which ends the record with positive words of wisdom: “When the memory leaves you, somewhere you can ’ t make it home, when the morning comes to meet you, open your eyes with waking light ”
If anything, Morning Phase is a showcase of Beck’s exquisite composing talent Take lead single “Blue Moon,” for example; Beck’s velvety vocals, muffled percussion and elegant guitar arrangements elevate the track’s delicate melody Also like Sea Change, he has employed his father David Campbell for this album’s gorgeous string arrangements on “Cycle, particularly, as well as the record’s darke s t t r a c k , “ Wa ve ” a n
“Unforgiven ” Morning Phase also marks another indication of Beck s underappreciated knack for injecting a country twang into poetic elegies Blackbird Chain” is an orchestra-infused country ballad while “Country Down” is a bluesy slow-jam complete with a harmonica solo Will the next incarnation of Beck be a cowboy armed with his guitar and bleeding heart? Time will tell So who is Morning Phase Beck? We may not know for sure what’s plaguing him But he’s grown over the course of his (far too long) five-year hiatus no matter how dark his world is, he’s doing his best to see the light At the end of the day, he’s really just being himself

“Gangsta, Gangsta, Gangsta,” Schoolboy Q repeatedly rumbles to introduce his long awaited major label debut E P Oxymoron And he is not playing around Oxymoron stands firmly in the shadow of the gangster rap first popularized by N W A , Ice-T and Public Enemy But where those acts used their rap as a political cry for equality and attention, Q attempts to turn the camera inwards, considering his thugging and drugging in the context of his love and care for his daughter, Joy Q’s life story reads like a bad rap cliche He grew up with his grandma and single mother, joining the 52 Hoover Crips when he was 12 He graduated high school, but quickly turned to moving (and abusing) drugs for a living After serving some time for a felony and having Joy, he decided to clean himself up, the impetus for his rap career Top Dawg Entertainment engineer and high school friend MixedByAli helped bring him into the fold, getting Q a job working as Kendrick’s hype man Eventually Q started putting out his own material, with 2011’s Setbacks getting some buzz and 2012’s Setbacks and Contradictions establishing him as a legitimate up and comer, briefly even leading the internal TDE race for stardom However, smudged by the fingerprints of new TDE partners Interscope and Aftermath, Oxymoron lacks the consistent edge and unpredictability enjoyed by the lengthy but fantastically frantic Contradictions
ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT
Q has not been subtle in sharing his album’s theme, connecting the dots between his contradictory gangbanging and child rearing in a number of interviews The dichotomy even makes its way onto the album covers the deluxe edition has Q in a ski mask, the standard has Joy wearing dad’s trademark bucket hat But for all his selfmade hype, he is unable to make the concept seem earnest Whereas Danny Brown’s Old successfully alternated between terror, drugged out insanity and legitimate shame, Oxymoron feels like someone purposefully attempt to walk the line between honest, if cliched, artistry and bangerz It is certainly not the transcendent follow up to the thematically similar Setbacks and Contradictions that I was hoping for
Putting his major label advantage to work, Q secures appearances by 2 Chainz, Kendrick, Jay Rock, Tyler, the Creator, Raekwon and sponsors the resurrections of West Coast stalwarts Kurupt and Suga Free He also gets some expensive production, with MikeWillMadeIt, Pharell, The Alchemist and Tyler each taking a turn on the boards Overall, the production on this album is superb, with the lesser known producers such as Sounwave and Nez & Rio holding their own against their more well-known counterparts However, all the glitz and obvious radio reaches really bog down the record Q bounces around the rhythms with abandon, but he often resorts to screaming ad libs
and cliches in place of any substance While Q does have some of the most elastic, inventive improvisations in rap (“YAWK YAWK YAWK”), they grow old
The split track “Prescription/Oxymoron” is an album highlight, one of few cuts in which Q actually sounds repentant Over a subdued, marching beat, “Prescription” finds Q solemnly getting faded to the point of unconsciousness on a mix of Percocet, Xanax, Adderall and lean The track fades out, and you can hear Joy saying “What's wrong daddy?” before a new beat starts and we find Q in full-on drug dealer mode “I just stopped selling crack today!” he exclaims on a bouncy hook, before detailing how he is making more selling pills than he ever could on crack It is the most convincing and unnerving depiction of drugs and dealing on the album
“The Purge” also shines, largely thanks to Tyler’s raw production and nihilistic, violent hook The Kurupt verse at the end is even well done, a delightful reflection of classic West Coast The Raekwon featuring “Blind Threats” is also solid, with Q rapping about his sinning in the context of his desire to one day find salvation, while the Chef provides his standard don’t-fuck-with-me-or-I-will-shoot-you verse They do not really connect, but getting Raekwon on a song is never a bad thing
“Collard Greens, with its bouncy production and prominent hook, is a misguided attempt at what I assume was supposed to be a club banger Kendrick’s verse about sexing women is partially rapped in Spanish and, while as technically proficient as ever, is relatively boring The 2Chainz-featuring and Mike Will produced “What They Want” fails similarly, with a surprisingly constrained beat by Will
This is not to say that the Oxymoron is unlistenable, it just falls short of what was expected Many of these songs are forgettable, but few are actually bad (the notable exception being the creepiness of the pimping song “Grooveline 2”) Hopefully future projects find Q less worried about moving records and more focused on sharing his own voice

TwitchPlaysPokémon
Iremember my most intense Pokémon experience It was a cable link battle with my camp counselor that we promised we would have for the entire summer We were both down to our last, most prized Pokémon Both were down to their last few hit points when we started to psych each other out him reducing my attack and me weakening his defense Finally after several attempts, I managed to pull off a solar beam and knock him out, earning bragging rights for the rest of the term as well as the only anecdote I told for the rest of the summer (I wasn ’ t a very interesting tween)
I hadn’t felt such Pokemon-related pride in almost a decade, but finally managed to while watching the gaming phenomenon that is TwitchPlaysPokémon On Feb 14, the website Twitch made a version of Pokémon Red that allowed commands to be executed by submitting comments into a chat box If you posted “ up, ” in about 20 seconds you’d see your username come up And, if there was space for a command in that time, the character would perform it
You might guess that with a large group constantly inputting commands like this, the game would be total chaos And you’d be right Red, Pokémon’s main character, wandered frantically about the map, walking a few steps one way, then doubling back another The act of walking along an edge a few steps without falling over took more than seven hours to achieve there would inevitably be a few hundred trolls submitting “down” at the last second But then something strange happened We won a gym battle And then we won another And another And it started to look like our ambling Red, as troubled as he was, stood a chance at playing this game As such, the stream gained popularity
During the ledge debacle on the second day, the number of players in the stream peaked at 25,000
Then things got weird Due to the frenetic nature of the gameplay, it was a common occurrence for Red to open his item storage and select the Helix Fossil, one of the first items given to him in the game For most of the game, the fossil is useless, but commenters in the stream started to think Red was looking to it for guidance And so the Helix Fossil was seen as a spiritual force Lord Helix and a bird Pokemon that Red caught early in the game as Bird Jesus In order to progress through the game, Red needs to get a water-type Pokemon, either an Eevee or a Lapras The stream decided to get an Eevee, but accidentally turned it into a fire type using a fire stone So the stream called the Flareon that was created the “False Prophet,” a servant of Dome, the other fossil Red can collect Fan art flooded the TwitchPlaysPokémon subreddit and other gaming forums By the end of day three, the stream peaked at over 75,000 players
Right around this time the Sunday before last I started following TwitchPlaysPokémon constantly I had the stream in a tab on my browser at all times, stealing glances while attending lectures and writing essays In an attempt to get rid of Flareon, we accidentally released our first Pokemon, “ABBBBBBK,” (The stream named Red’s Pokémon as well) The stream was devastated Dome had struck again Worse yet, we needed to get through a maze in order to defeat Giovanni, the head of one of the game ’ s criminal organizations The stream spent 24 hours straight toiling through the maze before Twitch decided to switch things up If enough players submitted “democracy” into the chatbox, the stream ’ s format would be changed so that, every 10 seconds, Red would initiate the command that is most submitted by the stream Players frustrated with the lack of progress rejoiced Traditionalists called it a cop out Red managed to finish the maze in Democracy Mode, but fissured the stream in the process So not only was TPP about Red vs Giovanni and Helix vs Dome, but Anarchy vs Democracy as well
The stream approached 100,000 active players as it decided to switch back to Anarchy Mode and challenge Giovanni to a trainer battle After five minutes, each was down to his last Pokemon, Bird Jesus for Red and Kangaskhan for Giovanni Bird Jesus was brought down to literally one unit of health, but damaged Kangaskhan so much that he only needed to execute one move to defeat him But the stream instead used Whirlwind, a move that cannot affect Kangaskhan, and with one fell swoop, Bird Jesus was defeated and Red had to recoup two full days’ worth of work
I can ’ t remember the last time I got so riled up watching a piece of live media Not the 2012 elections, certainly not the last few Super Bowls Watching Red’s slow, but steady progress through the game made tasks you wouldn’t think twice about if you were playing alone into momentous victories Imagine if you filled the Rose Bowl to capacity and told everyone they would all be controlling the Bruins this time Now that’s entertainment! Watching the stream, you felt like you were participating in video game history, as nothing like this has ever been attempted, and the incredible outpouring of creativity from its progress is something that will no doubt be attempted to replicate for years to come
As of writing this, Red has managed to achieve earn all the game ’ s the badges, and all that’s left is to travel through Victory Road and battle the Elite Four Lord Helix has been freed from his fossil tomb and stands in Red’s party alongside Bird Jesus, a Zapdos, a Nedoking, a Lapras and a Venomoth In other words, a God, a messiah, an angel, a king, a prince and an all-terrain vehicle (the Venomoth was named “ATV”) Better get in and start button spamming now so you can claim later that you were part of video game history

Red Takes Home Two Victories
S quad beats Hobart, Binghamton in rst games of the season
By SYDNEY ALTSCHULER Sun Staff Writer
This weekend, the Cornell men ’ s lacrosse team hosted Hobart to open the 2014 season Though it was a tight contest, the men ultimately prevailed with a 12-8 victory On Tuesday, the Red went on to top Binghamton, 14-8, improving its record to 2-0
The Red saw many players rise to their potential and break personal records Senior Doug Tesoriero was the driving force behind the Red’s success, showing an almost perfect faceoff record, and dominating ground balls He won 20 of the 24 restarts, including the last consecutive seven, which proved to be crucial to the Red’s comeback at the end of the match In addition to dominating faceoffs, Tesoriero picked up 14 ground balls, the most of any player on either team, and also tallied two assists
midfielder Dan Lintner, junior midfielder John Hogan and junior midfielder Connor Buczek all contributed offensively for the squad Donovan earned six points, posting three goals and three assists, while Lintner netted a career-high four goals Hogan and Buczek each contributed a pair of goals
“I thought our defense bailed us out against a very talented Hobart offense for much of the game ”
Though Tesoriero played a pivotal role in clinching the win, the victory can also be attributed to a strong group effort Junior attackman Matt Donovan, senior
Women Start Season With a Win
By RYAN QUINN Sun Staff Writer
With Sunday’s temperature at a relatively balmy 46 degrees, it felt like the spring season was truly beginning as the women ’ s lacrosse team took the field for the first time this year Enjoying the unseasonably warm weather, the Red came out with a scorching first game, beating Temple, 17-9
With the score tied at 3-3 halfway through the first half, the Red broke out with 11 unanswered goals to build an insurmountable lead over the visiting Owls The offensive eruption was fueled by standout performances from all four of the top attackers on the team Senior Rachel Moody led all scorers with five goals, and she said she was proud of her team ’ s performance on the field
“We’re really optimistic to see how many people were able to get on the board,” Moody said “As an offense in general, it was great to see that we put up 17 points in our first game ”
Among those other three attackers, junior cocaptain Lindsay Toppe added four goals, freshman Catherine Ellis added four more and sophomore Emily Tripodi quarterbacked the offensive line with five assists
One area where the Red held a sizable advantage over the Temple defense was passing Junior midfielder Sarah Hefner and senior midfielder Amanda D’Amico combined for three more assists to go along with Tripodi’s five
One of the more defensive-minded players on the team, senior midfielder Jessie Smith, spoke about the team ’ s passing prowess, especially the connection between Tripodi and Moody
“I was really impressed by our attacking unit,” Smith said “The sophomore-senior dynamic duo ‘Tri-moody’ did not disappoint”
The Red is on pace to enjoy a high-octane offense this year, as five of the top six leading scorers from last year ’ s team are back Even with the loss of last year ’ s captain Caroline Salisbury ’13, if this weekend’s performance is a preview of what it is to come, it appears that Salisbury’s spot will be filled quite nicely by Ellis
While the offense performed at top, mid-season form, the defense also put together a solid effort against a team that scored a formidable 12 goals per game last season Led by Smith and Hefner, the Red edged Temple in the ground ball battle, as well as
caused turnovers and draw controls
The Red’s midfield and defense squads bested Temple in every single statistical category, and Smith looked at this game as a good sign for Ivy League play
“Draw controls are always critical, and Sarah Hefner really came up big in that department,” she said “Overall, hopefully the Temple game will serve as a solid building block for the rest of our season We hope to take what we learned from the Temple game into our preparation for Harvard this week ”
The Red will take on Harvard Saturday in Boston, Mass in its first Ivy League matchup
“It’s great to have Harvard as our first Ivy game It’s great to have a win under our belt going into any Ivy game, ” Moody said “We’re pumped to play them; they’re always a really aggressive team to play and they’re always a really good challenge for us ”

According to senior Mike O’Neal, Cornell has a lot of young talent this year and the squad was excited about the collective effort it put forward against a tough opponent
“We have a lot of new faces this year and it was exciting to see this team fight for a tough win against a good Hobart team, ” O’Neal said “It allowed us to find our weaknesses That just leaves room for improvement as we move forward ”
Both squads netted back-and-forth goals, with neither team leading by more than two goals at any point during the contest Hobart stayed in the game largely
NHL Players Should Be Allowed in O lympics
Tconveniently, host Russia won the medal and gold count, so
Russians also had one of the most disappointing teams in
sport of the games: ice hockey
Ninety-nine percent of the time I watch sports, I watch the events I am familiar with and have watched my whole life I
know what is going on I know who to hate and who to root for, and I crack jokes with my friends and heckle announcers
But when the Olympics and its variety pack of winter sports come around, it is like I have studied for the wrong test All of a sudden I become the clueless viewer, completely lost The nuances of the sports are totally lost on me So I take shelter in watching Olympic hockey
An aspect of hockey that o n l y t h e W i n t e r O l y m p i c s makes possible is waking up early to catch a game So I set my alarm, and watched the U S take on Russia at 7:30 a m sharp Getting up early was a reminder of how differ-
e n t O
Watching the USA prevail, and later disappoint massively, had a more communal feeling than any other sporting event
The U S was the underdog, a role it plays so well in hockey, which felt more unifying than watching a team of All Stars such as USA basketball Not only did it feel like the whole nation pulling for them, but also that they needed it, unlike their compatriots on the bas-
ketball court, who are only tr ying to avoid disappointment And although it is not our national sport, it was still a blast to follow It was a ride we do not normally get and one that comes around only ever y four years
The 12-team hockey tournament was the highlight of t h
s gold medal game, featuring five Cornellians, was a classic It h a
championship game I have ever seen, with Canada sur viving a near-empty-net goal, and ultimately winning in overtime
