Student s Question Cornell’s Timing of Budget For ums

Plan s for budget discu ssed over exam s, winter break

Cornell is preparing to implement its new budget model, which will radically change how the University distributes its money

Some students, however, question how transparent the University has been throughout the process especially after the university held its budget model panels, which described what would change for different departments, during the fall exam period and over winter break

The new budget model is the result of a three-and-a-half-year discussion among University officials According to administrators,

the new budget model will consolidate the four separate models that Cornell currently uses and pool all revenue and expenses, which will be redistributed to colleges proportionately, depending on factors like a college’s number of students, fac-

ulty, staff and facilities Colleges will also pay two taxes to support central academic and administrative costs For some students particularly those who have unanswered questions about the new changes the scheduling of these discus-

sions has caused them to question the intentions behind the budget model

“It’s kind of suspicious that they would make it at a time that no students could come I trust the administration, but I don’t understand why they couldn’t make the forums more accessible to students,” Katie Loshak ’16 said “It gives the impression that they may be tr ying to hide something ”

But according to John Adams, assistant vice president for planning and budget, the preparations for the budget took place at the “ upper level” of the University, since the changes are not intended to have a major

Incoming Freshmen to Read Japanese Internment Novel

Freshmen coming to Cornell in the fall will be reading Julie Otsuka’s novel, When the Emperor Was Divine, over the summer as part of the New Student Reading Project The novel tells the story of a Japanese-American family placed in an internment camp during World War II

During Orientation Week, freshmen will attend one of six different presentations related to the reading After the larger group lectures, the students will participate in small group discussions of 15 to 17 students led by faculty members

According to Laura Brown, vice provost for undergraduate education, the book, which follows three and a half years in the life of an “ordinary family,” explores topics such as immigration, cultural differences and scapegoating

The novel is also a reflection on a very important time in American history, according to Sarah H Jones, assistant dean of students and chair of New Student Programs She said that one of the reasons she believes students will be able to relate to the novel is its focus on relationships and family

“The book tells many different stories –– those of individuals, of families and of communities,” she said “I think the New Student Reading Project is a great way for new students to be introduced to their classmates in an intellectual setting, as well as professors during lectures and to faculty in small groups ”

According to Jones, the University chose the book because of the relevance of its themes and the quality of its writing

Jones also said the depth of the characters is something that interested her about the novel

“There are very strong connections to our modern situation This is a book that I didn’t want to put down,” Jones said Brown echoed Jones’ sentiment, saying the book was

chosen for its quality and adding that the book is “thoughtprovoking ” The diverse perspectives provided in the book also played a role in its selection, she said

“It was interesting to the selection committee that the story is told from many points of view –– one of which was the point of view of a child,” Brown said The New Student Reading Program began in 2001, and

in the last three years, students have read Romain Gary’s The Life Before Us, E L Doctorow’s Homer & Langley and Philip Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

Har vard Cheating Scandal Forces 70 Students to Withdraw

Roughly 70 students, or approximately one percent of Harvard’s undergraduate body, were forced to temporarily withdraw from the College last fall in connection with the massive Gove r n m e n t 1 3 1 0 c h e a t i n g s c a n d a l , Harvard indicated in an announcement Friday morning

In an email sent to the Harvard community, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences Michael D Smith wrote that “somewhat more than half ” of the cases heard by the College’s Administrative Board last fall resulted in forced withdrawals He did not specify exactly how many students were required to leave

Smith also wrote that about half of the fall’s remaining cases resulted in disciplinary probation, while the rest resulted in no disciplinary action

About 125 of the cases heard by the Ad Board last fall

were those of students implicated in the scandal, which was unearthed after assistant professor Matthew B Platt reported suspicious similarities on a handful of take-home exams in his spring course Government 1310: “Introduction to Congress ”

expanded to involve almost half of the 279 students enrolled in the course

Sm i t h a l s o re

ow tuition payments will be calculated for students who were required to withdraw mid-fall semester due to their involvement in the scandal

Due to a prolonged time frame for the resolution of the cases stretching from late September to December that “had an undesirable interaction with our established schedule for tuition refunds,” the College will adjust tuition charges for all students who eventually withdrew as though they were issued their verdicts on Sept 30, he wrote

According to the student handbook, a student who involuntarily or voluntarily withdraws from the College on Sept 30 must pay $4,697 in tuition, as well as per diem room charges, pro-rated board costs, and a student services fee

Smith’s email, which represents Harvard’s first substantive announcement about the investigation’s status since it was first announced last August, comes in the midst of harsh criticism of Harvard’s handling of the case from several longtime Harvard insiders

Former Dean of the College Harry R Lewis ’68 voiced his disapproval in several blog posts, and prominent men ’ s basketball supporter and Staples founder Thomas G Stemberg ’71 excoriated his alma mater for its response to the scandal in a letter of complaint sent to University President Drew G Faust last month

Workers: Students’ Advocacy Is Critical

Navarro said “This is the struggle that we are facing and why we are organizing ”

“Management uses a lot of threats to intimidate workers and keep them from organizing ”

Holding up a Syracuse University T-shirt, Pierre said that workers in his factory were forced to meet a quota of shirts per day for only a few cents an hour He added that when workers mobilized and asked for a wage of 10 cents an hour, many were fired immediately

Discussing the harsh conditions under which workers are forced to labor, Pierre told of workers who were hit by supervisors when they refused to be photographed and pregnant women who were allegedly made to work until the day before their delivery

Raquel Navarro, a Honduran garment worker and union leader who earns 60 U S dollars a week working in a factory, said some workers “have experienced illness from repetitive motions ”

“[They] face problems with their arms, and since the Ministry of Health in our country is very weak, many of these workers are now unemployed,” Navarro said Pierre’s factory is one of many Gildan subsidiaries Gildan, a Canadian apparel company, is Adidas’ largest supplier in the Western Hemisphere Cornell severed its ties with Adidas in the spring after Adidas’ violations of Cornell’s Code of Conduct came to light However, many universities still maintain contracts with companies like Adidas and Nike and rely on contractors like Gildan to provide collegiate apparel

“We live in poverty in miserable conditions where wages that we earn are not enough for a family to get by It’s especially hard for us to provide adequate health care and education for our children

Many of the female workers are single mothers and have to take out loans with high interest rates to provide for their children,”

Yannick Etienne, a member of the Haitian workers’ rights organization Batay Ouvriye, criticized companies for exploiting workers who are desperate to support their families

“Companies are producing in poor countries because they know we need these jobs, that we are starving, that we need education for our children,” Etienne said “They are using what we need as human beings to put us down ”

The presentation also focused on past USAS campaigns, including monitoring working conditions at factories All three workers stressed the importance of consumer support in pressuring companies to improve factory conditions

Etienne also emphasized the crucial role of students in holding companies accountable

“Organizing workers is a very important thing,” Etienne said “This is why we ’ ve decided to organize globally But if the workers are not organized, the students can ’ t do anything This is a very important component in the equation The students have to organize not only as consumers, but as citizens of the world Together, with the students and the workers, we can change an exploitative system, ” Etienne said Karen Li ’15, a member of COLA who works closely with USAS, praised Cornell’s leadership in fighting unfair labor practices

“The struggles of the workers really showed us that their struggles and the work that we do as students are all very connected Recently, the sweatshop abuses by Adidas and the rampant abuses in their supply chain have really come to light We as Cornell students are proud that [the University has] terminated [its] business relationship with Adidas,” Li said

Finally, all three representatives expressed their desire to build a better future not just for themselves and their co-workers, but also for their children and their country

“ We will triumph I don’t know if I will still be alive to see this victory, but I hope my children will see it,” Etienne said

Day Hall Defends Timing of For ums

impact on Cornell’s departments, classes or student life

“Students won ’ t see a difference at all,” Adams said “In fact, there are many departments within some colleges that will not see anything different What we are doing here at the center, and what the Provost is doing is making decisions at the dean level ”

According to Adams, about 100 people attended each of the public discussions regarding the new budget model The audience was comprised of University budget officers, college officers, faculty and graduate students

Elmira Mangum, vice president for planning and budget, said there was an opportunity for those who were not present to ask questions over the phone

“We wanted people to feel comfortable asking as detailed a question as they wanted and [for] us to be able to respond to them,” Mangum said Daniel Kuhr ’13, College of Human Ecology representative for the S A and chair of the financial aid review committee, said that although he understands the new budget model is not meant to affect costs at the student level, he would have liked to attend the public forums

“We as students are also shareholders in the University, and there should be a concerted effort on behalf of the administration to incorporate students into changes like this, even if it just means making meetings wait until the time is more convenient for students,” Kuhr said

According to Mangum, howev-

er, there have been many opportunities over the past few years for individuals to ask questions about the new budget She added that the dates for the most recent forums were not intentionally chosen to prevent anyone from attending

“Our schedule was designed around when we have to prepare the budget for approval for the University Trustees,” Mangum said “[The timing] was not on purpose We were trying to get things scheduled as soon as possible For us, that was the deadline that we had to have [the forums] by so people could prepare budgets for the next fiscal year ”

For some students particularly those have unanswered questions about the new changes the scheduling of these discussions has caused them to question the administration’s intentions behind the budget model

However, Adams said that the majority of the forums reviewed aspects of the model that were specific to changes in the budget

“[These discussions] went down into the details of the principles and for most faculty and students, they would not have understood what was being discussed,” Adams said

According to Adams, there will be future opportunities for people to post questions and comments to Provost Kent Fuchs about the budget model

“If [anyone] has complaints or sees something that we ’ ve done totally wrong, then we’ll be able to make adjustments before we start building the budget,” Adams said

Professors Question if Discrimination E xists

admitted into an elite college

Still, Miller said that the SAT is one part of a much larger application, and that it is not the sole deciding factor when admitting students At Cornell, the decision of whether or not a student is accepted or denied is based on several other factors, such as their extracurricular activities and educational background, he added

“The [SAT] is not what we base admission on The exam is a very flawed exam and it doesn’t predict people’s success in college It’s just one factor,” he said

Miller said he questioned whether this phenomenon of Asian Americans being held to a higher standard during the admission process actually exists

“It’s one thing to have that perception, it would be another to have direct evidence that it is happening,” he said

While Miller said that Asian Americans are not treated in a discriminatory fashion during the admission process, other faculty members are more apprehensive when assessing the validity of the phenomenon

Prof Derek Chang, history and Asian American studies, said there is no definitive answer to this very complicated question, because the subgroup of Asian Americans as a whole is very diverse He added that the question of whether Asian Americans are being held to a high standard in the admission process is a difficult one to answer

“It’s unclear, which is not a satisfying answer There is a lot of conflicting evidence,” Chang said

The charges brought against Harvard and Princeton alleging discrimination against Asian Americans in the admission process have since been dropped, which reflects the complexity of not only the issue but of admissions data as well, according to Chang

However, Chang said the resulting investigation was dropped because there seemed to be no evidence of discrimination in the admission process

New York City Mayor Unveils Plans

For $1.8 Billion Chunk of S andy Aid

NEW YORK (AP) Grants for homeowners to fix their properties, spending to install generators at public housing complexes and competitions to create new storm-resilience technology are among the city’s plans for some of its federal Superstorm Sandy aid money, Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced Wednesday

The city also envisions nearly $200 million in grants and loans for storm-struck businesses and a $40 million contest for utilities to harden power, fuel and phone networks against storms, he said as officials began detailing how they intend to use the city’s share of the more than $50 billion, multi-state Sandy recovery package Congress approved last month

The plans aired Wednesday concern just a first slice: nearly $1 8 billion for the city in what are known as community development block grants, which generally have to be used for affordable housing, job-creation and social services City officials expect to get more money they’re not yet sure exactly how much for purposes ranging from rebuilding roads to reimbursing city workers’ overtime

But the first chunk “is real money, and it’s really going to make a big difference in our city,” Bloomberg said

The plans need approval from the federal Housing and Urban Development Department, headed by former New York City housing chief Shaun Donovan City officials are optimistic about getting the OK and hope to have the programs started by late April or early May

They include:

$350 million for up to 9,300 low-to-middleincome homeowners to fix damage beyond what can be addressed by the city’s Rapid Repairs program, which sends contractors into homes for electrical repairs and other basic work needed to make them habitable It has fixed up 16,000 homes and apartments so far and has about 1,000 more to go, Bloomberg said

$250 million for apartment buildings that are habitable but still need significant repairs The money would be spread among buildings that encompass nearly 13,000 low-to-middle-income apartments

$120 million for generators and other measures to make public housing more resistant to future storms

Loans of up to $150,000 and grants of up to $60,000 some $80 million in all for businesses to recover from the effects of Sandy, which flooded 13,000 enterprises and knocked out power to about 75,000 The city started its own $10 million business aid program shortly after the Oct 29 storm, but that money is running out, Bloomberg said $100 million in to help businesses make themselves more resilient to future storms, through grants of up to $100,000 for small businesses and up to $1 million for large ones

There are also contests Bloomberg likes competitions as a way to bring forth new ideas, and his administration has launched them in realms ranging from designing micro-apartments to choosing an institution to create a technology-focused graduate school

Plans for post-Sandy contests include a $5 million competition for flood-proofing and other storm-resiliency technology, the $40 million contest for utilities and a $100 million competition a

spurring economic development in storm-struck sections of lower Manhattan and coastal Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island

Gov Andrew Cuomo plans to use up to $400 million of the state

’ s portion of the Sandy money to buy and demolish wrecked homes and preserve the land Bloomberg said that may well be a good idea for the state to pursue, but the city is focusing on trying to return people to their homes

“That’s what most people want to do, we believe,” he said

The End of Parking Requirements

ON MONDAY, THE BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS VOTED unanimously to recommend the elimination of the City of Ithaca’s minimum parking requirements These controversial mandates require developers to build one parking space for every two housing units created We urge the Common Council to act on the Board’s recommendation and repeal the requirements As multiple studies have shown, minimum parking requirements create urban sprawl and raise housing costs an effect also noted by Mayor Svante Myrick ’09, a vocal proponent for overhauling the city’s parking laws The elimination of these requirements would allow Ithaca developers to receive faster approval for projects necessary for revitalizing Collegetown and other areas throughout the city

Over the last several years, Collegetown businesses have shut their doors as they negotiate expensive leases and declining foot traffic In order to strengthen the core of Collegetown, new, affordable housing units are needed But proposed developments have been stalled by the parking requirements In the case of the Collegetown Crossing project, developer Josh Lower ’05 has been attempting for more than two years to seek an exemption from the law, which would otherwise require the construction of 57 parking spaces for residents Elimination of the requirement would allow Lower’s project and others to move forward

Studies have shown that parking requirements increase urban sprawl, disincentivize walking and thereby hurt businesses in areas with high foot traffic A 2010 study by researchers at the University of Munich showed that parking minimums “significantly increase” the amount of land devoted to parking, to the detriment of water quality, pedestrian safety and non-automotive forms of transportation Similarly, a 2009 study by the New York City Department of City Planning found that districts with the highest parking requirements also have the lowest density, retarding economic development Thus, we believe that these parking requirements are directly at odds with increasing the economic vibrancy of our city

Eliminating parking minimums would also help lower Collegetown housing costs The cost of building and maintaining parking garages is passed on to residents, as developers bundle parking and housing costs together We believe that eliminating such requirements would likely lead developers to build fewer spaces, allowing for more residential units and decreasing housing costs However, the city must also ensure that residents reduce automobile use, instead of moving their cars to on-street parking and crowding residential areas Reducing the number of available parking spaces, and thus car traffic, would be worrisome if Ithaca lacked a strong public transportation system However, we believe Tompkins Consolidated Area Transit provides excellent service to the areas that would benefit most from the elimination of the requirements, such as Collegetown and the Commons Myrick has been strongly supportive of efforts to improve TCAT service, helping the city secure a $4 5-million grant from the Federal Transit Administration He has also supported alternative transportation methods, adopting a plan for a bicycle boulevard around the city These improvements will aid development and provide a path for a revitalized Collegetown, demonstrating that minimum parking requirements are not needed to promote economic growth

The Si x Ty pes of People You’ ll Find on Tinder

Who’s using this hook-up app any way?

Are you on Tinder? That was rhetorical, because I know that you ’ re not When I downloaded Tinder it took me approximately four minutes to go through all the local prospects, which I found disappointing Tinder is the frankest hook-up iPhone app I’ve ever encountered save it’s homosexual predecessor, Grindr Even I, the frankest person I know when it comes to sex, was shocked i ’ remova

and all pretense that comes with wanting to get with someone As if alcohol wasn ’ t enough of a social lubricant, with Tinder, you can feasibly see someone across the bar, like them on Tinder and the hardest part of hooking up is done By using a binar y scale of hotness (1 yes, 0 no), the app simplifies the process and overestimates the amount of information you can glean from someone ’ s profile picture

Preliminary research has lead me to believe that there are five types of people you’ll find on Tinder:

The Long Distance

When I first downloaded Tinder, my distance settings were set to something ridiculous, linking me to guys about 50 miles away I was just getting used to it, so I ended up liking someone who was 45 miles away If you think I’m crazy enough to travel 45 miles to meet someone I met on some ratchet iPhone app based on a picture of them chugging out of a trophy, you ’ re wildly insane

The Person You Can’t Believe Is on Tinder

As you got through hitting reject, reject, like, reject, you ’ re likely to stumble upon this person, exclaiming “WHAT! I thought this person was a virginal beacon of all things pure and prude!” I guess our parents were right: Social media is turning us all into promiscuous attention-whores, even the most pious among us

The Child

It’s not that I’m morally opposed to

people hooking up with freshman, but something about seeing the number 18 listed underneath someone ’ s picture is jarring Reject

The Been There, Done That

This person looks familiar! You may have made out once, but nothing came of it Throw them a courtesy “like” to show them you ’ re still interested Whether it turns into anything or not is beside the point

The Tinder Tease

This person likes everyone! They just want an ego boost but they won ’ t actually message or follow through on anything Tinder for them is just a playground for raising hopes! They break our Tinder hearts

The Too Good for You

At the very beginning of my Tinder research, I was hesitant to “like” people who I deemed to be out of my league I call it being Tinder-shy The cure for Tinder-shyness is to “like” the first person you deem to be out of your league Whether it’s a match or not, there is no harm done Grow some Tinder-balls

Honorable Mentions

The guy whose profile picture is him holding a newborn The guy I went on a date with who I mentioned in my last column

Although you may find someone on Tinder, the proportion of the time you spend scrolling through photos versus the chance that you end up having some kind of physical interaction is grossly uneven Only time will tell how we interact with Tinder and how that translates into our real lives Tinder is just like everything else in our love lives: only as meaningful as we choose to make it And, if not meaningful, at least it’s fun

D o as I S ay, Not as I

In the spirit of OMFG-I’m-a-graduating-senior nostalgia, I’m going to admit something in this column that I have never admitted before to anyone else, not even to myself: I didn’t lose my college hookup virginity until the very, very, very last day of freshman year And I am not ashamed! If anything, this has made me into a stronger person Albeit, a glacially slow-moving one However, what has worked for me may not work for everyone

There may be some of you out there who started reading this column hoping for tips that will help you sweep the guy or girl of your dreams off his or her feet

I am not here to give you those tips I am here to talk about what I know and that’s how to wait until the very last day

Remember folks, the last day is still a day to lose your college hookup virginity

Step 1: Find a person

This can be literally any person Do you have the hots for your Spanish teacher? That’s great, she’s a person How ’bout the registrar? Also a person! That slightly pudgy guy who’s got a lot of gusto in the gym? Perfect

Step 2: Try really hard not to think of that person

The secret of this step is to actually think of the person

SIt helps if you associate something mundane with the person, like spoons, or eggs, or drop-top convertibles This helps put the person out of your mind and in no way will call the person to mind whenever you see these items Trust me, I do this for a living

Step 3: Cultivate that person ’ s Cult of Personality

While not thinking about your intended hookup, try to attribute personality traits to that person, even though you may not know if these actually exist Examples I have used in the past include: the ability to tap dance, kindness, excessive enthusiasm and a love of trigonometry An acceptable alternative, if he or she is a horticulture student, is to cultivate that person ’ s garden but make sure to ask permission first

Optional Step 4: Do nothing for a really long time

For those with more time on their hands, an effective way to speed up the process is to not do anything about it for a month or two If possible, try to go abroad for a semester or take a 20-credit load that will crush your soul This doesn’t actually do anything for the relationship, but sometimes it’s good just to take a break, relax and get caught up on your TV shows Pining away for someone is serious business (Continue to Step 5)

Step 5: Pine

Get started in the endless cycle of talking about said person to your friends, having them tell you just to (wo)man-up and do something, then chickening out and sitting in Okenshield’s waiting for a spark of inspiration It helps at this point to find out where you will most likely see the object of your desire and avoid it like the plague If you keep seeing him or her, it might inspire you to talk to that person

and we don’t want that Remember, we ’ re going for the last day here

Step 6: Make your move.

This is the hardest part I usually wait to save her from a laser cougar or a burning avalanche or something suitable for my macho man-skills Some people I know have stayed up for hours talking about dog pedigrees and have sealed the deal at the end of a marathon session on Dachshunds Whatever works for you, but make sure it’s weird/awesome enough for

you to talk about it in excruciating detail to your friends afterward

Step 7: Revel

High five! You’ve just completed a defining moment of your life! To make it better, hope that the person you just got with isn’t coming back This will make relating it to your friends back home that much more bittersweet That’s two flavors for the price of one word! Can’t get a better deal than that

Step 8: Rinse and repeat Seriously, take a shower All this pining and kissing and stuff usually causes people to work up a sweat, even if they aren ’ t aware of it Guys and girls enjoy clean guys and girls It makes life easier

What are you up to tonight?” Before he could answer, she bent forward at the hips, her upper body becoming parallel with the table and perpendicular to the men ’ s eyeballs Her tits led

the introductions, shaking vigorously in the mens ’ faces as handshakes absently followed

Cam looked over to his friends, hoping they would recognize his apprehension in inviting this girl along He knew she would be clinging to him for the rest of the night, and wanted nothing of it He had had her once before and once was enough Her eagerness last time in bed quite overwhelmed Cam to the point that he could not finish the act

Though his brain rebelled against the idea of her, his cock remembered how the inside of her mouth felt, warm, wet and pulsating against his skin He gained back his senses enough to respond, “Well, we were just starting our guys ’ night out You know bars, house parties, pizza, after hours

What are your plans, Kady?”

“Oh, well, I was here with my friends, but it looks like they got up and left in the last minute or so, ” she said,

pointing to her empty table, without having taken her eyes off Cam

Before Cam could say anything to prevent the damage, his friend JD jumped in and invited Kady back to their apartment With a naughty smile, still looking at Cam, Kady enthusiastically accepted the invitation So they all left the sushi joint and started toward 440 Teddy St Cam decided this turn of events was not all bad One of his friends could probably snag this girl and he would be set free from the impending bang bang

As she gazed longingly at Cam from across the room, Kady’s head filled with details of their previous encounter She remembered it being fun, but not a wild night and this was set her mind on achieving her goal of the evening: rocking his world The last time was about two months ago, but she could still taste him inside of her, fulfilling her every desire and filling every inch This time she was going to be on top, and tease Cam and his beautiful black dick until it was all seven inches concealed inside With these thoughts, Kady began to feel wet between her legs, her salmon pink silk panties moistened underneath her

This was her time to shine She uncrossed right leg over left, lifting high the right leg Salmon pink panties and white, creamy thighs caught his attention for a split second, but his focus was on the meaningless conversation with Wayne about who had eaten more sushi rolls If you must know, Wayne was winning with a whopping three spicy tunas, but Cam was about to take the lead He had a double salmon roll ready to be eaten

While Wayne was counting, Kady began approaching Cam In Kady’s mind, her advance was slow and sultry, her hips swaying as she lifted each leg But to Cam, in one split second, there was a girl sitting on top of him, wiggling herself around on his lap Kady then smushed her face against Cam’s, smothering one lip at a time with her mouth, while her tongue explored Cam’s cavernous mouth Wayne,

though sensing his friend s distress, thought the situation was quite hilarious and did nothing to cool down the action He left his friend Cam to be devoured

This is the difference between men and women Wayne went around gathering friends to listen through the doorway at the fiasco about to go down He found this to be pure entertainment, to listen to his friend “suffer” at the arms and breasts of this carnal chick (The dirty details of the act itself will be spared; sorry all you half-massed men )

Cam, though defeated, was determined not to make this the finale of his night After all, it was only 12:15 a m So he pretended to go to the toilet He found friends mulling around the hallway near his door “I need to get rid of this girl,” he pleaded with them

Cam walked back into his room, hoping to find her dressed and ready to go, or even better already gone Yet, she lay naked in bed, uncovered by the sheets Her large beautiful breasts hung towards the sides of her body, her nipples pointing to two corners of the ceiling Her fingers were inside of her, letting only a few sparse red hairs be visible beyond the freckled hand Cam held his ground, “Kady, I’m really sorry, but I am going to go to Pixel with the boys You are more than welcome to stay here We will be back in about two hours ”

“Okay, see you soon, ” she replied, half moaning He knew she would be more than fine, alone, naked, in his home, but was unable muster enough courage to kick her out

After a wonderful drunken night with the boys, a makeout or two at Pixel with some randos and a fallen piece of pizza on the crust side (thank goodness), he had nearly forgotten about Kady until they began to head home

He slowly creaked his bedroom door open, having not heard anything as he approached He quite well knew, however, what was to come, and who As he pulled his door ajar, he witnessed his friend Arnie mid-thrust into our red head beauty Needless to say, despite fearing for the present in his sheets, Cam was more than overjoyed to see his friend

However, if you ’ re looking to broaden your horizons beyond a can of Campbell’s, you don’t have to look far Ithaca boasts an eclectic variety of restaurants and offers an extensive assortment of soups to fit any mood and situation

HOT AND HEARTY: VIVA CANTINA

The colorful Viva in the Commons has a trendy and homey vibe, friendly ser vice, affordable prices and most impor-

tantly, tasty Mexican food Aside from the assortment of cheesy enchiladas and meaty burritos, Viva boasts a daily selection of soups, ranging from a smoky chili to the black bean soup My personal favorite is the poblano corn chowder soup If you ’ ve worked up an appetite and are in the mood for a heartier soup with a little kick, the poblano corn chowder at Viva does the trick The creamy soup encompasses chunks of potatoes, kernels of yellow corn and a hint of poblano pepper and is served with a side of crispy corn tortilla chips to toss in for an added crunch

LIGHT AND FRESH:

VIETNAM RESTAURANT

Vietnam Restaurant on Dryden in Collegetown offers a simple variety of Vietnamese food, including a small selection of Phô noodle soup for a great price The Beef Phô at Vietnam is my go-to Asian soup when I’m craving a light yet satisfying bowl of noodles

after a long day The steamy beef broth is made from long hours of simmering bones and special spices, producing an aromatic base for the thick rice noodles and lean flanks of tender beef When topped with crunchy bean sprouts, fresh Thai basil and a squeeze of lime, the soup offers an unexpected explosion of flavors and textures and a zip of zesty to offset the delicate beef broth For a touch of fire, I like to add a squirt of Sriracha hot sauce This soup is perfect if

you ’ re in the mood for Asian food and looking to stay fresh and healthy

HOMEY:

COLLEGETOWN BAGELS

At Collegetown Bagels, the soups vary from day to day, but you can always expect a superb assortment of comfortable classics

The Collegetown location is usually a little more packed, but the less crowded location in East Hill Plaza offers an equally tempting choice of soups and more available seating I highly recommend the lentil and sausage soup that remedies anything from the common cold to the morning sluggishness resulting from a night of too much fun

The lentil and sausage soup lacks excitement but makes up with comfort and is great when you need the familiar taste of home

With a heavy amount of soft lentils, savory sausage and assorted vegetables, the soothing soup strikes the perfect balance between light and heavy, smooth and chunky The soup is served with your choice of bread on the side and can be easily taken to go for later

WHEN YOU’RE IN A RUSH: TEMPLE OF ZEUS

The Temple of Zeus is popular on campus and is known among students for having the most amazing soups During lunch hours, the place is hoppin’ and you’ll need to get there quick because the soups run out fast The little eatery located right in Goldwin Smith Hall on the Arts Quad is perfect for a speedy lunch before you hit the books or rush to class Temple of Zeus offers two options on their soup menu each day ranging from the rare and interestingly complex East African soup for when you ’ re feeling a little adventurous to a richer cream of broccoli soup for when you ’ re in the mood for something simpler In my opinion, you can never go wrong with the classic tomato garlic soup on the Monday menu Sprinkled with a dash of Parmesan cheese and a few croutons, the smooth tomato garlic soup pairs well with one of Temple of Zeus’s pita sandwiches

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

The new My Bloody Valentine album is here, but it came at a cost to facetious music lovers No longer can I say that I’ve waited for this album my entire life (Loveless came out in 1991), and, more importantly, m b v is no longer in the same league as The Avalanches’ LP2, Daft Punk’s LP4, The Wrens’ LP4 and other mythical records that have not seen the light of day As its reputation developed in its 21-year lull, My Bloody Valentine grew a huge presence without even asking for it Kevin Shields, mastermind of the band and a notorious perfectionist, was content with creating and shelving several albums worth of material in that time because it “hadn’t got that spirit, that life in it ” He hired and fired so many producers making Loveless that he nearly bankrupted Creation Records producing it When it came to pleasing people, his fans’ desires were a distant second to his own

It’s unsurprising, then, that m b v ’ s release was handled poorly For a band that gathered 200K+ likes on its Facebook page without much engagement and 17K+ likes on a status about merely mastering a record, it is mind-boggling that the band didn’t expect the website to crash in three minutes when its new album came out Fans were hysterical A pranker, claiming to be Shields, uploaded something that turned out to be a Japanese pop song with a hair dryer blowing in the background Someone created a petition on WhiteHouse gov asking for the website to come back online Because it was released a day before the Super Bowl, jokes that m b v was a

collection of Beyoncé covers spread Anything in those anguishing hours seemed plausible

The hype surrounding m b v s release seems unrelated, but it does emphasize how the band has been in its own little bubble while the world moved on to new genres m b v is not a revolution or even an evolution; it is a re-visitation of the band’s roots, motivated by nostalgia, but with the awareness that there is no true return after something as monumental as Loveless The album is more like a melding of its debut Isn’t Anything and follow-up Loveless: Shields doesn’t do anything drastically new (and thankfully no Beyoncé covers) But in stirring its own juices, the band sticks to the unique sound that bred an entire genre of mimics (Slowdive, Teenage Fanclub) and deviations that never quite captured their hazy glint

Loveless’ sound may have been difficult to replicate because of its fluid notions of gender As music critic Simon Reynolds wrote, Shields “oscillates between dulcetvoiced androgyne and technology-obsessed boffin, a scientist probing the outer limits of sound ” In m b v, those notions have coalesced This isn’t bad, per se, but feels like a metamorphosis without purpose

Opener “She Found Now” is classic ethereal Valentine, but there is something about the bright guitars and the slow chugging build-up that makes this a love song from a decidedly masculine perspective Bilinda Butcher takes over the vocals in “New You” over an upbeat fizzy synth,

Frightened Rabbit, the Scottish kings of sadness, has built its reputation on heartbreaking folk rock Since its first LP in 2006, the quintet has paired frenzied acoustic strumming with tortured lyrics like “I think I’ll save suicide for another year ” Equal parts self-deprecating and self-aware, they’ve always been the band we wanted Mumford & Sons to be At its best, Frightened Rabbit’s music is intensely personal and, until now, has been exclusively written by lead singer and rhythm guitarist Scott Hutchinson According to the band, their fourth studio album was a collaborative effort, a choice Hutchinson claimed has “done nothing but benefit the new songs ”

On one hand, he’s correct; Pedestrian Verse is the band’s most cohesive record to date Frightened Rabbit’s earlier work, even the acclaimed Midnight Organ Fight, was arguably over-reliant on the acoustic guitar While the lyrics often more than compensated for the instrumental stagnation, the addition of electric guitar, keyboards and more diverse arrangements strengthens the band’s sound without neglecting its roots

creating what sounds like the band’s take on bubblegum girl pop getting older

The second half of the album has a very heavy drum and bass influence with mixed results “In Another Way” is the closest to gender-melding as it gets in this album, but the vocals and beat are more like separate halves, with the rawness of the drums quickly overpowering Butcher’s more delicate vocals “Nothing Is” is an awkward mishmash of carnival tunes, reinterpreted into noise rock with a dancey kick drum beat But the last track “Wonder 2” is where m b v really works It ventures into new territory for the band while staying heavily atmospheric, stripping out the lush guitars and leaving behind something more industrial If Loveless is like humid warm air, this song is dry and cold

Even with the hints of a new direction, however, a nagging realization remains: The initial rush of the record, albeit a good record, was not because of high expectations, but because it has been so long in the making It would’ve sounded the same whether it was released in 1995 or 2013

This raises the question: Why m b v? Why now? Loveless is just as stunning a record as it was 20 years ago, but music has long since moved on m v b reminds us that the band still has something to say, but doesn’t explain why we should listen

On the other hand, the personal nature of the lyrics has suffered Hutchinson is as self-deprecating as ever, but “I am that dickhead in the kitchen” doesn’t carr y quite the same emotional impact as, say, “ Why won ' t our love keel over as it chokes on a bone?” Thankfully, this lack of intimacy is more the exception than the rule “State Hospital,” the stor y of a broken, struggling woman, boasts some of the best lines on the record: “Brought home to breathe smoke in the arms of her mother with a blunt kitchen knife / who just lays in submissive position / between the national weight and the slow arc of a fist ” It’s beautifully written and unusual in that Hutchinson is not, for once, the protagonist While it has its faults, Pedestrian Verse is a sign that the band is growing and maturing in all the right directions And if nothing else, “State Hospital” and “The Woodpile” are worth the ten dollars alone

Blank Pages in a Crowded Room

Mustachio’d men with half-moon eyes, their hands clasped over buttoned beer bellies

A bald old man in a onesie Figures whose foreheads bleed into their noses, whose limbs contort in impossible positions Ink blobs with feet

For nearly two weeks, these figures and many more populated the Experimental Gallery in Tjaden Hall as part of “Drawing Room,” an exhibition which ended last Friday

A drawing performance piece by Sophia Balagamwala M F A ‘14, “Drawing Room”

invited viewers to alter or remove the drawings on display according to a set of instructions taped to the outside door:

1 Things to draw on: paper, photographs, books, gifts

2 Time to draw in: 10 seconds, 30 seconds, one minute, five minutes, as long as it takes

3 Things to draw with: pen, pencils, ink, crayon, paint plasterune

4 Types of drawings: big, small, very big, very small, medium, drawings that fit, drawings that do not fit

Ownership of drawings:

You are invited to draw on and take any drawing you like

Blurring the distinction between gallery and studio, the show was both a place for creating and a place for display Upon entering the Experimental Gallery, viewers were confronted by drawings of all shapes and sizes

According to Balagamwala, the idea for “Drawing Room” originated from an anonymous blog she began with a friend three years ago that documents and comments on their hometown of Karachi, Pakistan The blog began as a way for Balagamwala, who spent four years in Toronto completing her undergraduate studies, to renegotiate her relationship with Karachi It started simply enough Some drawings, a few photos here and there, some text However, eventually something unexpected happened: People began printing out Balagamwala’s drawings, altering them and sending them back to her

“It was interesting how people would claim ownership from a drawing, said Balagamwala of those initial altered drawings

Likewise, “Drawing Room” asked viewers to take ownership of the drawings on display by altering them Every day, the drawings changed Over the course of the exhibition, a group of intertwined men grew facial hair, started reading books and bought headphones

Some were pinned to the wall, others loosely arranged on the floor amidst scattered pens, pencils, crayons and markers A work table and several ladders were also included, available for anyone who wanted to reach the top of a larger drawing or sit in a desk

WAn empty building was filled with figures trying different positions, all visible from the windows According to Balagamwala, one participant got so carried away that he drew all over the wall something which took several lay-

ers of paint to remove this weekend, when the show was taken down However, she said, it’s just par for the course

“That’s the beauty of something like this, that it’s open to the unexpected happening,” she said, contrasting a performative, high-risk work like “Drawing Room” with a more typical gallery space, where drawings are hung on the wall

Indeed, Balagamwala’s work is all about turning the white cube notion of the gallery space and all the elitism that accompanies it inside out She uses simple, cheap materials: sketch paper, pens, ink and occasionally plasterune or cut-outs from magazines Her mostly monochromatic drawings are quick sketches, some taking as little as five-seven minutes to complete Her figures, rendered in a few squiggles and marks, are whimsical and inviting

“I kind of like how [drawing isn’t] taken so seriously,” she said, elaborating on her choice of medium “There’s a silliness to it, and I think that’s why it works ”

At times, Balagamwala will use such silliness to undercut serious subject matter For example, when Karachi passed a law banning

Lysandre Reamed

hen Christopher Owens, vocalist of indie-pop duo, Girls, broke the news of the band’s imminent breakup on his Twitter feed months prior to the event, I mourned the tragedy with an acute pain rivaled only by the loss of a similarly beloved band of my youth, The Fugees The only medicine to numb the dull ache created by the disintegration of Girls was the possibility of a solo effort from Owens Perhaps Owens, like Lauryn Hill of The Fugees, would emerge from the ashes of inner-band turmoil to release a stunning debut album, undiluted in sound and unrivaled in artistr y, as The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill turned to be And, after months of hollowness in which the absence of Girls created a conspicuous void within the music scene, Lysandre, Christopher Owens’ debut album, was released

This, in actuality, proved to be the greatest tragedy of all

You see, Lysandre, while not uniformly disastrous in each of its 11 tracks, is an outright disappointment Just 28 minutes long and played solely in the key of A (save for the final song), the album details Owens’ first tour experience, taking him from the U S to France, where he ultimately falls in love with a girl, Lysandre Lysandre’s linear story-telling is continuous, with every song featuring an instrumental motif called “Lysandre’s Theme ” Owens has stated that the album is meant to sound like “ a minstrel telling his tale,” but what becomes of his intended melodic, measured narrative is actually a strange, medieval satire While the haunting of Lysandre’s Theme” threading each track sometimes sounds like “Greensleeves,” it more often than not sounds incongruously like a Jimmy Buffet cover band I doubt anyone has ever requested of Owens to add more ska-saxophone (think Saturday Night Live theme song) and Renaissance fair flute to his poignant angst, yet this is what he gives us The end result is outlandish The album’s ultimate impression is one of frivolity, not the usual sensitivity of Owens’ past projects In the aftermath of the immense sophomoric success of

Girls’ last album, the contrast in quality between Father, Son, Holy Ghost and Lysandre is made all the more apparent I once critiqued, “Father, Son, Holy Ghost [has] the ability to warm our lonely heart right before the next ballad, bleeding feeling, breaks it yet again” which, in my typically conservative speech, is the most ardent of applause However, since Lysandre is 50 percent more Owens and 50 percent less Chet “JR” White (Christopher’s songwriting partner in Girls), it is plausibly 100 percent more inferior While it is common knowledge that the discordant personal relationship between Owens and JR dissolved the band, their harmonious professional relationship produced truly magnificent work Only in light of their split and in light of Lysandre’s resounding failure is the songwriting mastery of JR most dearly missed In fact, Owens himself has confessed that JR is the brains behind Girls’ concept and sound, a sound which has ranged from surf pop to psychadelia to gospel, to create their unique retro-modernist feel But if JR is the brains, does that make Owens no more than a face? Considering the puffery that is Lysandre and his recent jaunt as a model in Hedi Slimane’s Saint Laurent campaign, Owens has not yet proved the opposite to be true

Without the complement of JR, there is no warm messiness, no sweet androgyny of sound What’s left is just Christopher Owens, and therein lies the crux of Lysandre’s despair So much of Owens (and all his insecurities) takes up the content in Lysandre that it’s easy to forget the album was meant to be about someone else Owens used to be the (lovingly) greasy-haired coverboy of all things broken-hearted His talent was considered to be immense but thus far never fully tapped And now that we ’ ve tapped it, the mystique of Owens’ former character, one surrounded in his little-boy-lost routine, is gone Owens used to embody the youth and romance in being fatally fucked

Pillion riding, riding many people to a motorbike, (supposedly to stop terrorist planning and attacks), she didn’t want to comment directly on the subject of terrorism Rather, she made funny drawings of people crammed clown-car style on motorbikes

“I guess part of it was trying to laugh at stuff that was happening or show a lighter side or focus on points of resiliency,” she said of her drawings depicting Karachi

It’s this lighter side that came alive in “Drawing Room” and that promises to be on display next week in “Ripe One Fresh,” a twoperson show with Francesca Lohmann M F A ‘14 In some ways, this show will be a departure from Balagamwala’s previous work she will even paint something directly on the wall However, no matter the medium, she said, everything comes back to drawing

“There’s something about these lines,” she said I think I could spend my whole life just working with line ”

up, but now there is no youth, no romance only what’s fucked up

What happened to the extraordinary boy out of extraordinary circumstance? The boy who escaped the polyamorous Children of God cult, who was homeless and heroin-addicted by puberty, who was best friends with an eccentric oil baron billionaire? What happened to the boy with the heartbreaking history, with all the stories to tell? In the cold light of day, his magic has dissipated, and all that’s left is a kid skinny, selfabsorbed and (worst of all) ordinary Knocked off his pedestal, Owens is just like us In the music industry, we seek a fantastical escape from our humdrum lives, a portal into the beyond, not a mirror unto ourselves Christopher Owens is no Lauryn Hill, no Beyoncé Though possibly premature, his cataclysmic rise and fall thus far emulates that of Pete Doherty, postBabyshambles In the saddest could’ve-been but never-was tale ever told, Christopher Owens becomes the cliché he tried so hard to avoid Perhaps, this is the true tale the minstrel should be telling

Red on the road | The women’s basketball heads to Har vard and Dartmouth this weekend to do battle with two of the top three teams in the league

Red Seek s Redemption

At Har vard, Dartmouth

After losing to Princeton and Penn last weekend and slipping into fifth place in the race for an Ivy League Championship, the

w o m e n ’ s b a s k e t b a l l t e a m w i l l return to action on the road against Har vard and Dartmouth, in what head coach Dayna Smith believes will be the most challenging weekend of the season

Cornell (10-8, 2-2 Ivy) will look to bounce back after shooting less than 40 percent from the f i e l d a n d b e i n g o u t re b o u n d e d against Princeton and Penn

According to Smith, the Red will need to focus on getting back to basics if it wants to secure a winning record at Har vard and Dartmouth

“ This weekend is going to be more about us [and] what we ’ re capable of doing,” she said

The Har vard Crimson (12-6, 3-1) enters the contest on Friday as winners of five of its last six games, including a road sweep of Ivy opponents Yale and Brown last weekend The Crimson averages just under 70 points per game and boasts nine players over six feet tall

“ They’re tall and they’re long,”

Sm i t h s a i d “ T h e y h a v e v e r y good upperclassmen leadership ”

Junior guard Christine Clarke

a n d s e n i o r f o r w a rd V i c t o r i a Lippert lead the team with 16 7

a n d 1 2 1 p o i n t s p e r g a m e , respectively The Crimson also has a weapon in 6’4” sophomore

f o r w a rd Te m i Fa g b e n l e , w h o scored twenty points against Yale on Friday

“[Fagbenle] posses a different type of skill-set than most people in the league,” Smith said Har vard keeps other teams on

their feet with a balanced attack of shooting and post-play

“ T h e y p r e t t y m u c h s p r e a d you out, ” Smith said “If you focus so much on the perimeter game they can pound the ball inside ”

The Red has never won in Cambridge and it has dropped its last nine contests against Har vard for an all-time record of 11-57

After playing the Crimson,

t h e Re d w i l l h e a d t o Ne w H a m p s h i r e t o t a k e o n

Dartmouth (5-13, 3-1), a young, talented team that has been hot of late

The Green is led by senior guard Faziah Steen who averages 12 1 points per game Behind Steen is cast of mostly freshmen and sophomores

“[ They have a lot of ] young players starting to learn the system, ” Smith said

After beginning the season 212, the Green has won three of its last four games and is currently tied with Har vard for second place in the Ivy League

Dartmouth plays an aggressive offense, taking control of opportunities to push in transition and drive the ball to the hoop

“ They tr y to destroy help and create penetration lanes and isolation in the post, ” Smith said

Although Dartmouth holds a n a l l - t i m e r e c o rd o f 5 3 - 1 3 against Cornell, the series has been more competitive recently The Red has won five of the last 11 matchups with the Green T h e Re d w i l l s p e n d t h e remainder of the week preparing for its opportunity to knock off two talented teams on the road

Ten Questions Columnist Katie Schubauer caught up with junior Austin Taylor to discuss ever ything from his nickname of “Baby Face” and manscaping routine to his A sian fetish

1 You are a junior on the Cor nell men ’ s swim team What has swimming meant to you over the course of your college career?

Swimming has provided me not only with a lot of great friendships, but it has also allowed me to do something that I love at a school that I love It has provided me with a way to challenge myself, to progress and to see the results

Who is your favorite teammate?

I would probably say Ryan Walker because he just always brings a lot of energy to practice and is always having a good time He’s always cheering people up when they aren ’ t having a good day

2 Speaking of Ryan Walker, he was wondering why you come to practice so cranky?

(Laughs) Well, sometimes swimming can be a fr ustrating spor t and it can be hard to do the same thing ever y day Good thing Ryan is there to lighten the mood sometimes

3. So I understand that swimmers are known to shave for championship meets, however, I have heard you “ manscape ” your chest hair weekly. Is this for swimming or the ladies?

(Laughs) It’s definitely not weekly But I have awkward body hair Its not full enough where I could leave it and it looks good, so I have to do something with it or else it looks disgusting So let’s just say it’s for swimming but there are some other motives behind it Swimming gave me a good reason for shaving my chest to be considered okay

4 Why is your nickname Baby Face?

Well, people called me “Baby Face” in high school

Oh my gosh, it goes all the way back to high school? How did it manage to carr y through to college?

Well it’s actually a coincidence People saw me and thought I looked really young and would call me “Baby Face” ever y once in a while And then, in college, an older kid on the team when I was a freshman, James Keady, star ted calling me “Baby Face ” And that kind of stuck with the swim team and then carried over to my fraternity I guess it’s tr ue

Is it tr ue you just star ted growing facial hair?

(Laughs) I used to be able to grow like a disgusting

neck beard, but now it’s coming in kind of fully Congratulations!

Thank you I think I can grow a pretty good-looking beard these days

Is your other nickname Chum-Lee?

(Laughs) That comes from the show “Pawn Stars ” It doesn’t have to do with me, personally; it’s just because his first name is Austin But he’s a complete idiot And I think his last name is Chum-Lee and ever yone calls him that He just does ever ything wrong and always messes up, so that doesn’t have to do with my personality obviously Just the name

5 Is it tr ue you used to be a D J ?

Yeah, I did used to be a D J I still have the ability to D J

You just got shown up by your frater nity brother, Greg Monte a little bit

(Laughs) Yeah I just haven’t really had time to D J any par ties I like to enjoy my weekends and deejaying them is kind of a commitment I did used to make music, though I used to make mashups and I was having fun doing that, but then I stopped because it wasn ’ t really original I was using other people’s material and then creating a song out of it I really want to star t getting into making my own music, but the software is hard to learn It’s a pretty steep learning cur ve, so we’ll see

What do you know about the ter ms “House of Lear ned Doctors” and “ The Mansh”?

Those are the joke names of my two albums, if you will I asked my roommate freshman year, Mar ty Rauch, what I should call my album and he just blur ted out “House of Learned Doctors ”

They sound pretty legit

Yeah And then we used to call our townhouse “ The Mansh,” referring to a mansion, so he decided that would be a good idea for the name of my second album

6 Tell us about your roommate freshman year?

w e e t Is this the same roommate that apparently never left the room and was such a filthy animal that they had to bring a hazmat team in to clean the room’?

(Laughs) No, I think that was the other roommate, Person Number Two I think he and Mar ty just didn’t really see eye-to-eye in terms of their living habits

7 What happened to your Xbox, subwoofer and receiver?

(Laughs) I kne w this would come up Nothing happened to my Xbox, per se My Xbox is connected to my receiver, which got wet and broke I think someone may have spilled water or some sor t of liquid on it and that’s why it doesn’t work anymore

8 Is it tr ue you have an obsession with hats?

Well, I don’t have an obsession with hats I just don’t frequently buy hats, so that’s why I wear the same ones over and over My hair kind of grows in weird directions I like it really shor t and once it gets long I don’t really like it as much So I have to put a hat on it

Why don’t you just get your hair cut when it gets too long?

Because that’s kind of a hassle It’s not so long where I would have to cut it It’s just long enough that I would need to put a hat on it

9. Is it tr ue that you have an A sian fetish?

(Laughs) I wouldn’t narrow it to just Asian I am culturally diverse I mean, I did date a Filipino girl in high school I don’t want to limit myself; I just find the Asian culture fascinating

10 Which other Cor nell team do you like to hang out with the most?

We’re pretty close-knit with the swim team, but if I had to choose, I would probably say the women ’ s lacrosse team or maybe the squash team

Do you think the women ’ s swimming team would appreciate that answer?

I think they might be a little upset The women ’ s swimming team is fun to hang out with, too, and I enjoy all the stuff we do with them We’re just tr ying to diversify our options right now

C.U. Wrestling Bids Farewell to Eight S eniors

Sunday will be last home matc h for Class of 2013

After coming out with double wins last weekend against Hofstra and Ivy competitor Columbia, the Red is preparing for this upcoming weekend and the last home match of the season against Bucknell for senior night Not only is it the last time that the Cornell wrestlers will hit the mat of Friedman for competition this semester, it is also the last time that the eight seniors will compete at home in their college wrestling careers Senior co-captains Kyle Dake, Steve Bosak and Joe Stanzione, along with seniors Cody Hutcheson, Pete Mesko, Oney Snyder, Lukasz Stala and Patrick Sullivan will end their time competing on the Hill this Sunday

The seniors have been dominant forces for the Cornell team this season and for their past three years competing in red singlets

According to head coach Rob Koll, Cornell University will not only lose some of the best athletes that the school has ever seen, but also excellent students and great guys

Despite not being a traditional starter this season the third co-captain Joe Stanzione has been an integral part of the team in terms of dynamics and mental attitude Last season, Stanzione earned a 23-9 record in his junior season with 13 bonus wins, including eight by fall

Highlights of his career have included a fifth-place finish at 141 pounds at the Body Bar Invitational and a sixth-place finish at the Mat Town Open Stanzione also earned thirdplace at the New York State Intercollegiate Championships

“You don’t know how much I respect Joe Even though he’s not a starter, he’s a captain this year I have never in 24 years, had someone who was not a starter, serve as a captain, but that’s how I look at him and his teammates look at him,” Koll said “He’s a team player and has also been in the lineup and had a few varsity experiences ” Cody Hutcheson

Senior Cody Hutcheson also epitomizes the “typical” Cornell athlete, according to Koll

“Kyle has defined Cornell wrestling over the last four years.”

Senior co-captain Kyle Dake has changed the face of Cornell wrestling and propelled the program to become one of the best in the nation Not only has Dake been a leading voice on the team as captain this season, he is also a three-time national champion to boot This year Dake is competing for a national title to become the first wrestler to win four titles in four different weight classes

“Kyle has defined Cornell wrestling over the last four years He has helped raise our [program’s] prominence not just locally, but nationally He has made Cornell the hot school when it comes to high school wrestlers,” Koll said “He’s a big personality And will continue to be the face of Cornell wrestling even upon his graduation ” Dake has also racked up many other titles in his four years on the Hill such as All-American for the past three years, EIWA Champion in 2010 and 2012, EIWA Wrestler of the Year in 2011 and 2012, First-Team All-Ivy in 2010 and 2011 and Ivy League Rookie of the Year in his freshman campaign Steve Bosak

After Redshirting, Senior co-captain Steve Bosak joined the team for another year and has brought dominance in the 184 pound weight class Not to be outshined by Dake, Bosak won a NCAA Tournament champion title in 2012 along with being honored as a NCAA All-American in 2011 and 2012, an EIWA Finalist in 2011 and 2012 and SecondTeam All-Ivy in 2010

“Steve came to Cornell, not like some of our all-time greats He was not heavily recruited by the [traditional] wrestling powerhouses I am glad that he wasn ’ t It came down to Cornell or Brown [for him] He was actually committed to Brown and thank God I was able to show the errors of his ways and convince him that Cornell is a better choice for him,” Koll said “We recruited him as a 157 pounder and now he is wrestling at 184 He’s a student of the sport He is the type of student that Cornell is all about ”

“Cody Hutcheson is a Cornell engineer Anybody in the engineering department will tell you that it is demanding to be an engineer and a varsity athlete On top of that, he has a couple of injuries that have probably stopped him from reaching his full potential,” Koll said

Highlights of Hutcheson’s career include his two wins last year at the Binghamton Open and Body Bar Invitational

“Whenever we need [Cody], he is always there for us

He is a just a wonderful young man to have in our program, ” Koll said Pete Mesko

Although falling to a serious shoulder injury, senior Pete Mesko has rallied in the past season to come back from a serious setback Mesko went 4-1 at the New York State Intercollegiate Tournament to come in third last season and made guest appearances in duals such as the Body Bar Invitational and the Binghamton Open

“Pete Mesko has had injury problems and injured his shoulder pretty badly [but now] any time that you need someone to work out, Peter is there to answer the call,” Koll said Oney Snyder

Senior Oney Snyder has also been a b i g

presence for the Red as a heavyweight Snyder totaled nine wins in his fourth season with Cornell and came in fifth at the Mat Town Open

“Oney, has wrestled varsity on and off for the last four years He is a great kid,” Koll said “It is wonderful to have a heavyweight that is committed to his teammates like Oney ” Lukasz Stala

At 197 pounds, senior Lukasz Stala has seen a bit of action in his time with the Red Stala compiled a 17-13 record in his third season (2011-2012) with Cornell He placed third at the Mat Town Open at 197 pounds and took fourth at the New York State Intercollegiate Tournament He also wrestled for Cornell at the Binghamton Open, Body Bar Invitational, Las Vegas Invitational, Southern Scuffle and Edinboro Open

“He has been in and out of the lineup for his entire career He went from 197 to heavyweight He has gotten multiple job offers, studied overseas, had a bunch of internships,” Koll said “He is the kind of guy that when we bring recruits, we use him as the example that you can truly have the best of both worlds He has really experienced what Cornell has to offer ” Patrick Sullivan

Senior Patrick Sullivan walked on to the team during his freshman year and according to Koll, put in hard work and gave Cornell wrestling his all Although he did not get much time on the mat for the Red in large competitions, Sullivan consistently wrestled at the Binghamton Open in his time on the Hill

“Patrick came as a walk-on freshman year I am hesitant to have a lot of walk-ons because they tend to walk off,” Koll said “I tried to discourage him for the first year, but all he did was work harder He has earned a lot of respect Pat has just been a wonderful addition to the program ”

With the graduation of eight seniors, the Red will have to fill its roster next season with new talent from the incoming freshmen and hopefully, as Koll said, “There are some national champions already in the room ”

Ready to retire | Senior Kyle Dake, along with the seven other seniors, will wrestle the last home match of their Cor nell careers this Sunday
