Student D ining Waste Powerful Enough to Ser ve as Energ y Source
By SLOANE GRINSPOON Sun Staff Writer
A group of Cornell students has collaborated with the Ithaca Area Waste water Treatment Facility to research ways to use food waste from campus dining halls as an energy source for the sewage plant
The Cornell University Sustainable Design Anaerobic Digestion Team, a group that consists of four Cornell undergraduates, has been working with the water treatment facility for the past year by assessing the feasability of proposed plans for a large-scale anaerobic co-digestion operation, according to Adam Pranda ’14, a CUSD Anaerobic Digestion team member
According to Pranda and Marina Shumakovich ’14, another member of the team, anaerobic co-digestion is a process in which wastewater and food waste are put into a bioreactor that contains microorganisms Facilities with these reactors can then harness the resultant methane and use it as energy sources
Pranda said the end goal of the new equipment installation is
to be able to harness enough potential methane gas from food waste and wastewater to power the facilities’ heating and power systems
The water treatment facility is currently undergoing an $8-million energy per formance upgrade, which includes improved equipment that can convert food and water waste into energy, according to the facility’s website
The CUSD team examined five different case studies to prove the past successes of anaerobic co-digestion in other facilities, Pranda said
“ The Ithaca Waste water Treatment Facility was mainly interested in the information we gathered from case studies regarding the success of co-digestion at other facilities and how these facilities utilized any excess energy, such as putting it back into the electricity grid,” Pranda said
The team then conducted its own feasibility study, using a tool developed by the Environmental Protection Agency the CoEAT tool to conduct a cost-benefit analysis, according to
“ The tool is composed of numerous models used by the EPA in order to estimate not only actual process costs, but also the costs that are deferred as a result of waste reduction and energy savings,” the team ’ s final report said
Pranda said the data collected from the EPA CoEAT tool was used to “verify the feasibility of the upgrades being done to the facility ”
José Lozano M S ’88, Ph D ’91, laboratory director at the Ithaca Area Waste water Treatment Facility, said that starting in the middle of February, instead of composting food waste from dining halls, workers will send waste to the Ithaca Wastewater facility
“The CUSD team was able to successfully communicate to a diverse audience the environmental, and economic, benefits of anaerobic digestion over composting,” Lozano said
He added that the team ’ s findings showed the wide array of benefits that anaerobic digestion could provide
“In addition to reducing the carbon footprint and green house gases emissions over composting, anaerobic digestion will produce biogas The methane in the biogas can be used to produce heat and power or fuel for transportation,” he said
Pranda said the CUSD Anaerobic Digestion team is hopeful that the plant will refer to the findings of their study
“Hopefully, our research will be used by the plant in order to make predictions about its energy production and usage, ” Pranda said “Once the plant begins accepting a larger volume of food waste, our research can be used in making decisions regarding the management of any excess energy ”

respond to sexual assault and encourage schools to communicate with students about past incidents of assault
Skorton and Murphy said they hope that the task force’s instructions, which they will receive at the end of the semester, will be in line with Cornell’s past efforts to improve its sexual assault policies
Skorton said he approval of the new task force, drawing attention to the epidemic of sexual assaults on college campuses
“[Susan Murphy and I] think that it’s a terrific use of [Obama’s] office, the bully pulpit, to focus us on a very important issue,” he said
Echoing Skorton’s sentiments, Murphy said that Obama’s public health approach to sexual assault is both “incredible” and “critical ”
Women who are victims of sexual assault can develop physical and emotional effects that can compromise their academic performance, according to the report Rape survivors suffer from a wide set of emotional consequences that have been linked to higher dropout rates, the report added
Anna-Lisa Castle ‘14 said in an email she hopes the task force will provide support for students engaged in fighting sexual assault on Cornell’s campus
“We will hope to have input by letting people in the White House know that we have ideas.”
“This support should come in the form of compensation for students who are doing the work that administrators are getting paid for, lending additional support to overworked lower-level administrators who deal directly with students [and] hiring professionals for trainings and institutionalizing educational programming on the issue,” she said

According to Skorton, student leaders have helped him see the relevance of this issue within the LGBT community, something that Obama did not address when he introduced the task force

A report by the White House Council on Women and Girls, which was released Wednesday, said 1-in-5 women and 1-in-71 men have been raped in college; however, only 12 percent of victims report the attack
Additionally, of the seven percent of men who admit to committing rape, more than half were repeat offenders, having committed an average of six rapes each, the report said
WHCWG explained that these numbers “don’t begin to tell the whole story ”
“[The statistics] don’t tell of the physical, emotional and psychological scars that a victim can carry for life They don’t speak to the betrayal and broken trust when the attacker is a friend, a trusted colleague, or a family member,” the writers of the report said
Additionally, Skorton said he plans to reach out to the White House before the task force publishes its instructions and share Cornell’s own experience modifying its sexual assault policies by the end of the semester
“We’ll do our best to get our ideas in front of that group Our ideas that we ’ ve learned from Cornell, some of which are derivative of other universities,” Skorton said “We will hope to have input by letting people in the White House know that we have ideas ”
President Skorton added that President Barack Obama’s efforts to build the task force are “terrific ”

Preser ving the Social S ciences
THE COBURN AMENDMENT, A SET OF RESTRICTIONS on the types of political science research that could be funded by the National Science Foundation, was effectively repealed when the Senate passed the $1 1-trillion appropriations bill earlier this month The restrictions, which were passed in March, prevented the NSF from funding such research unless it pertained to U S national security or economic interests While the amendment may have caused damage beyond the 10 months it was in effect that cannot be reversed, we commend Congress for overturning the amendment and reaffirming the value of the social sciences Given the increasingly precarious position of federal humanities research funding, we believe the University should continue to commit to the future of the social sciences, both through physical space and resources
As we noted in an April 9 editorial condemning the Coburn Amendment, the NSF has played a significant role in funding political science research both at and beyond Cornell Until the amendment’s passage, the foundation supported 61 percent of research in the social sciences nationwide, and funded one in five of all external political science grants given to graduate students and faculty at Cornell In requiring that funded projects be certified by the NSF’s director to have specific economic and national security implications, the Coburn Amendment may have had a variety of consequences for political science research: from defunding existing projects, to dissuading researchers from applying for NSF grants, to even causing political scientists to change their topics of study to qualify for funding
The passage of the Coburn Amendment exposed a troubling facet of modern American thought: the devaluation of the “soft sciences” the social sciences and humanities at the expense of a focus on science, technology, engineering and math fields Though STEM education plays a key role in the modern economy, we cannot allow expansion of those fields to eclipse the value of the humanities The debate about the value of the soft sciences is present at Cornell, too President David Skorton, a former heart surgeon himself, has spoken out repeatedly about the value of the humanities and social sciences, even calling them “crucial” to a modern education Though several major University construction projects support the expansion of STEM disciplines, Klarman Hall which will provide more space for the College of Arts and Sciences’ humanities departments serves as visible manifestation of the University’s commitment to the growth of the humanities
The repeal of the Coburn Amendment is an admirable development, but there is no safeguard preventing a similar policy from passage when Congress takes up another spending bill later this year, and the hazard it posed to the social sciences is far from over The lessons about democracy, political participation and public policy imparted by political science research have never seemed as relevant as in today’s political climate
With the political vulnerability of social science research, the future of the humanities depends upon federal government action in tandem with action by universities We urge Congress as well as the University to continue to promote the social sciences
As a society, we are obsessed with the idea that love conquers all From an early age, we are taught to strive for love as an ideal So, when we start to fall for someone, not only do we want to follow them to the ends of the earth, but it also feels like the right and only thing to do Which is all well and good until we fall for someone who is bad for us
We have all fallen for people who are bad news, and when we do, it can feel like we have lost control to a force greater than ourselves But that’s the problem with this “love conquers all” mindset: Somewhere along the line, we have forgotten that we have a choice
Let me clarify We can ’ t control who we develop feelings for any more than we can control who pops up inexplicably in our we i rd e s t d re a m s Bu t t h i s c u l t u r a l l yendorsed idea that we must succumb to our feelings that we must act on our emotions lest we miss out on a great fulfillment is not only misguided, but dangerous It gives us the illusion of control while really putting us at the mercy of our heart’s every whim
If we endorse tossing logic out the window for love, then what happens when we start to fall for someone who is wrong for us?
Here’s a story I’m not proud of Last semester, there was a guy who would always text me to hang out at 2 a m He was like a vampire: If I tried to reach him during daylight, he was nowhere to be found He appeared only at night, leaving behind a trail of cognitive dissonance and regret Despite these red flags, I liked him and
Letter
Does Love Conquer All? It’s Up to You.
the hopeless romantic in me was determined to give my feelings for him a fighting chance But after weeks of playing into his game, I became more and more invested and felt increasingly disappointed I was not a priority for him and never would be, and my growing emotional investment came at my own expense
I felt like a victim, but who exactly was I being betrayed by? The truth is, part of my investment came from decisions that I had made On some level, I knew all along that we had different intentions I knew that those 2 a m texts should have been left unanswered, but I chose to fuel the fire
Though I felt powerless at first, I realized that I had a choice the whole time It was then that I decided to stop seeing him and stop answering his texts It wasn ’ t easy The feelings didn’t fade overnight, though they did fade eventually I proved to myself what we all sometimes forget: We may not get to choose the way we feel, but we can choose the way we act
So, does love conquer all? Maybe, but we are the force behind it Initially, love may feel like something that happens to us, but as it progresses, it is shaped by the decisions we make Enduring, grow-oldtogether love takes commitment from both people And if, early on, we see that red flags are popping up, we have the power to steer our ship elsewhere

Defending Cornell Athletics
To the Editor:
I was dismayed to read the editorial “A Call to Change The Academic Policy For Athletes ” In fact, no such policy exists for athletes; they are subject to the same academic policies as all other Cornell students The editorial contained many other inaccurate and misleading statements as well
The editorial implies that coaches are not sufficiently concerned with their studentathletes’ academic and athletic success Nothing could be further from the truth During my 30-plus years at Cornell, the welfare of student-athletes has always been our top priority Our coaches are fully committed to the success of their student-athletes
The editorial calls for an increase in mandated support programs for student-athletes I disagree As noted, Cornell Athletics supplements college and university academic support services Information on these services is widely distributed to all student-athletes, although for most participation is not required We and others on campus provide support, encouragement and resources, but ultimately, it is the responsibility of every Cornell student to take advantage of these offerings This is an important part of maturing and becoming self-sufficient
For the record, during the Fall 2013 semester, 34 of the 36 varsity teams earned an average GPA higher than 3 0, continuing a five-year trend The average GPA for men ’ s teams was 3 20 and the average for women ’ s teams was 3 29 Of the approximately 1,100 student-athletes, 63 earned GPA’s of 4 0 or higher during the fall and 25 earned GPA’s below 2 0 This data suggests that the existing athletics department and university support programs are effective I could not be more proud of our student-athletes for their impressive academic and athletic accomplishments and their integration in the Cornell community

Coming back to campus, this column was cer tainly looming over my head Originally, I wanted to write about the guy I was seeing over break (“seeing” used loosely) but decided to honor his request to leave him out of this Given that he graduated and all his friends (including my brother?) still read this column I considered it a fair request The question remained: If he was out, what was I going to write about?
Lucky for me, my quar ter-life crisis solved itself last Thursday night with some flir ty texts from a guy I had been interested in last semester I was laying in bed having a sloth night (by that I mean I watched Scandal for four hours straight don’t judge me), when all of a sudden a “ want to grab a drink?” text popped
up on my phone from said male I was 99 percent sure he was hooking up with someone else and, considering he called me jailbait one night last semester ( I had to look that one up and apparently it isn’t a term of endearment), my response was the ver y typical “in bed watching TV, no drinks for me ” Apparently I’m tr ying really hard to p

him head, when “do you love sucking my cock?” came out of his mouth I wasn ’ t quite sure how to respond to this Should I stop blowing him and respond? Should I shake my head? Was I even supposed to respond? The whole situation was so confusing that an unenthusiastic “yeah ” came out of my mouth
I am not saying dirty talk can’t play a role in the bedroom. Honestly, it can be really fun if both people are into it.
this other girl ( e x c l u s i v e l y, at least), and apparently I am no longer considered jailbait because he ended up in my bed as I finished the last six minutes of the episode of Scandal I was watching Shor tly thereafter all our clothing came off and as my kind, understanding and nonjudgmental roommate put it he began to “shake our house ”
My initial excitement about the whole s i t u a t i o n q u i c k l y d i s s i p a t e d w h e n h e opened his mouth There I was, giving
I figured that would be the end of it and the dir ty talk w o u l d c e a s e , but nope, he s p o k e a g a i n “ I c a n ’ t w a i t to fuck you so h a r d , I ’ m going to fuck you so hard ” At this point my thought process was: “Is that statement really necessar y?” So I stopped giving him head and let himself turn his words into reality The sex was great Really fun, actually But then he kept talking “Can you handle how hard I’m fucking you right now?” Really That happened Yes, obviously I can handle it because I’m not screaming out in pain nor am I asking you to stop In fact, I
actually think I’m showing verbal signs of pleasure throughout this whole ordeal so WHY ARE YOU STILL TALKING But obviously all that came out of my mouth was a disgr untled moan to convey my range of emotions
Well, I finished and he hadn’t It was one of those all-right-this-needs-to-ends
lube moments when he began a ver y intense monologue about where on me he was going to finish More dir ty talk No I was done The condom came off and I let him finish in my mouth Finally, there was no more talking I am not saying dir ty talk can ’ t play a role in the bedroom Honestly, it can be really fun if both people are into it But here’s the thing about dir ty talk: You need to be on the same page as your par tner and, honestly, it’s not usually appropriate for a first-time hookup I don’t care if we ’ re friends, I don’t care if we sext reser ve your ver y aggressive dir ty talk for someone you know is going to be into it

“ There are times when I feel like an IKEA salesman, because I believe no bedroom is complete without one-night stand ”
or the first time since coming to Cornell, I haven’t dreaded the mundane “how was your break?” B S questions That’s because I now get to respond, “Oh it was good, I applied to grad schools, hung out at home, banged an NHL Ice Girl You know, the usual ” ( While I have yet to respond with that answer, I would not be lying if I did) Ladies and gentlemen, welcome back to Headshakes and High Fives
More than once in my life, I have uttered the sentence: “I had an awesome time last night By the way my name is (inser t Donny J’s real name here), what’s your name again?” I’d like to tell you other wise, but what’s the point of an anonymous column if I ’ m n o t b r u t a l l y h o n e s t ? Yo u r T h u r s d a y ’ s wouldn’t be nearly as enter taining if my go-to wild hookup stor y was the time I made out with my girlfriend of 12 years under the high school bleachers Considering I never kissed a girl until college (shocker, I know) and my high school didn’t have bleachers, that would be a lie anyway While there is a spectr um between one-night stands and long-term relationships, that doesn’t mean one end is more desirable than the other
into categories for the humorous purpose of writing this ar ticle I have discovered that there are four players when it comes to one-night stands:
1 The Buzzkill: You refuse to set yourself free for the night, and you are disgusted by those who do Whether you ’ re in a committed relationship or have a terrifying fear of penis/vagina/both (shout out to my bi homies), if someone has ever stumbled home from a random bump and grind, you ’ re sure let them hear how much of a terrible person they are You are definitely the kind of person who I’d love to have adjacent rooms with so that
you and prepare to enjoy the next fe w hours in a way that your 10 a m self will regret weekend after weekend You tell yourself that maybe you need to rethink some of y o u r c h H O LY S H I T T H AT C H I C K / D U D E
BUMPED BY ME AND GAVE A LIT TLE SMIRK! HE/SHE WANTS IT! But then tomorrow rolls around and you wish kept your D or V to yourself There’s nothing wrong with this, I just think it’s less stressful to be The Hype-Man, or better yet
While there is a spectrum between onenight stands and long-term relationships, that does not mean that one end is more desirable than the other.
you’d be forced to hear sounds that you will NEVER unhear
Now, my goal for today is not to encourage people to star t dishing out handjobs to ever yone they meet in Collegetown on weekends though if you insist, please let me know which bar you’ll be at Rather, I implore you to accept that it is an inevitable facet of the hookup culture, and there is no need to frown upon those who par take After years of research that I in no way forced
2 The Hype-Man: What’s a show without an audience? While you may not be laying some weekly pipe, you ’ re always there to give your bro/girl the “yeah go get some!” thumbs-up from across the room You are always there the next morning to ask for the play-by-play or driving him to pick up some Plan B (hopefully not the latter) You do not care how many strangers you ’ ve seen walk by your bedroom door, as long as your friend is having a good time To the unsung hero of the one-night stand, we salute you
3. The Shameful Horndog: I’m about to hit home on a quite a fe w of you right now Put a couple shots in
4 The Crotch Magnet: You have a charged pelvis, and ever y person with a pulse is one a hot slab of iron While you obviously have preferences, some action and a stor y is really all you need After all, you really have to break that dr y spell you ’ ve been on since last night And right when you get home, you high-five your bros and tell them they should probably wash their hands now As far as the average hotness of your hookups go, it’s bound to be lower than the other groups on this list, simply by statistics But I’ll bet people in the other groups have never banged on a subway, or had to walk home shir tless across campus at four in the morning, or heard “OH YES LESLIE!” when that is not your name No, my readers, that is you (or in this case maybe just me)
There is nothing more fulfilling than having beautiful sex in a relationship with someone you love But for the rest of who are not currently there, just let us have our fun And hey, maybe you’ll get a good stor y more than just from me ever y other Thursday

Deliver Me From Hunger: Ithaca’s Best Takeout Hot Spots
By CATHERINE ELSAESSER Sun Staff Writer
My first winter experience in Ithaca has discouraged me from going out to eat However, when the roads are too slushy or the subzero temperatures make you feel like hibernating, deliver y is a delicious and easy option There
a r e d o z e n s o f r e s t a u r a n t s t o choose from, and with a little patience, you can enjoy off-campus food without ever leaving your dorm I will dive into three d i fferent cui si nes a nd w i ll b e sharing the best dishes I have discovered from the comfor t of my dorm room or apar tment

Thai is one of my favoritetypes of cuisines to eat, and I knew it would be on my list for deliver y foods I find curr y and pad thai to be irresistible and decided to order both of these

If you are not in the mood for exotic food, Sammy’s is the place to order Italian comfor t food
S e l f - p r o c l a i m e d a s t h e “ b e s t pizza and pasta in Ithaca,” you can not go wrong with ordering deliver y from them There are m a n y c h o i c e s o n t h e i r m e n u var ying from subs to pizzas, cal-
zones, pasta and even game day foods like chicken wings and appetizers
I wanted to sample interesting items from their menu, but was not in the mood for a whole pizza We finally decided to tr y a calzone, sub and desser t The Greek calzone was a giant package of golden brown dough surrounding spinach, tomato, black olives, feta, mozzarella and ricotta cheeses The ratio of dough to filling was per fect and the cr ust had enough substance to stand up to the ingredients The chicken pesto sub came on a toasted roll with shredded lettuce, tomato and a creamy pesto sauce that coated the strips of chicken The subs come with a side, and I chose the crisp, thick-cut onion rings

The reigning machismo of punk rock is no new topic Ever since disaffected jocks star ted picking slamdancing over football as their preferred mode of unleashing aggression, punk par ticularly offshoots of American hardcore reeks of over t masculinity Back in high school, when I was playing in a misplaced, wannabe version of The Hold Steady, kids in the Long Island hardcore scene dismissed us as “faggots” because we wore button-downs and sweaters We br ushed it off as empty hatred half of us were lacrosse players! but I could easily imagine how threatening the entire scene could be to someone for whom the word “faggot” was a bit more loaded, or for someone who wasn ’ t a big fan of the casual groping that often went down in the midst of those hormonally-charged mosh pits Against Me!’s Laura Jane Grace has been looking down the barrel of punk’s misogyny her entire life
Formerly known as Tom Gabel, she spent much of her life str uggling with gender dysphoria and just recently announced her medical transition to living as a woman
Needless to say, it was a bit of a surprise to fans, despite a breadcr umb trail of clues (especially in “ The Ocean” from 2007’s New Wave, in which Grace sang, “if I could have chosen, I would have been born a woman”) Against Me!, a former anarcho-punk band turned Butch Vig’s (Never mind producer) latest major label muse, is a band that has taken grand transformations in relative stride (not to compare record label changes to
gender reassignment) On Transgender D ysphoria Blues, the rockers are back on an indie, Grace’s own Total Treble, and the production loses a lot of the over t sheen of Vig’s production What it loses in gloss, though, Against Me! gains in aggression The title track ser ves as a brilliant thesis: Grace airs trans-insecurities (“ You want them to notice the ragged ends of your summer dress / They just see a faggot / They’ll hold their breath not to catch the sick”) as the locomotive rhythm section propels the chor us into bona fide anthem status
The rest of the album doesn’t live up to the excitement generated by “ Transgender Dysphoria Blues” and how could it? but still manages to ser ve up a couple of wor thy moments “ Tr ue Trans Soul Rebel” has an explosively sweet chor us that rehashes the cheerleading of the title track “Drinking With The Jocks” is a satisfyingly raucous reassurance that Grace’s hormone therapy hasn’t sanded over her gravelly vocal chords, though its broad depiction of bro culture (“Look at all the pussy, yeah / Fill them up with cum!”) could benefit from the slightest hint of subtlety
The album’s shor tcomings come primarily in the form of clumsy lyrics and formulaic songwriting “Dead Friend” blows a strong verse melody by matching it with an over-sentimental clunker of a chor us And on tracks like “Unconditional Love” and “ Two Coffins,” Grace sounds like she’s tr ying too hard to do her best Geddy Lee impression, using a lilting deliver y

James Blake, How to Dress Well, Frank Ocean, Miguel, The Weeknd In the past couple years perhaps no other genre of music has been experiencing a creative renaissance quite like R&B While for much of the last decade the genre was considered a kitsch pop element to not be taken too seriously, many of the best new artists making music these days are using it as a platform for intricate songwriting and huge emotional heft As a result, it can be very difficult for artists to pave their own lane in the genre and make their voices stand out
For Irish singer/songwriter James Vincent McMorrow though, it’s as simple as using live drums
The prevalence of falsetto and warm keyboards on his sophomore effort Post Tropical will be nothing new for those who are fans of the above artists (especially James Blake) But when cymbal crashes enter the mix twoand-a-half minutes into first track “Cavalier,” the song takes on a unique airiness, harkening back to a time when folks like Marvin Gaye and Otis Redding worked with studio musicians
This is not to say that Post Tropical is merely a nostalgia trip Like much of the best modern pop music, the album takes cues from a myriad of styles and gen-
to sing of jaundiced skin and “ per verse elasticity ” Transgender D ysphoria Blues sounds best when Laura Jane Grace is excavating her past str uggles with dysphoria for inspiration and finds anger Whether its Grace realizing that she doesn’t want to “live without t e e t h” o r “d
“FuckMyLife666” or the resurrection of Crass’s bilious political screeds on “Osama Bin Laden as the Cr ucified Christ,” these blues are best ser ved with a healthy helping of accompanying blacks
Transgender D ysphoria Blues is not some sor t of definitive statement for transgendered persons, because Laura Jane Grace is not quite ready to make that statement What she is ready to do, though, is continue her life as a punk rocker, and she shows that, at moments, she can flip off those in her way misogynistic mosh pit molesters, especially as well as anyone If she can concentrate the anger and resentment exhibited on opener “ Transgender Dysphoria Blues” into a fulllength that’s a little less scatter-brained and a little more unconventional, Against Me! will have delivered a genuine classic For now, let’s just take TDP for what it is: a liminal record that sees Against Me! tweaking its traditional sound to var ying degrees of success

res The tight handclaps that ground “Red Dust” are a sidelong reference to Chicago’s juke electronic music However, McMorrow’s brittle falsetto and euphoric harmonies that crowd out all other sonic space, suggest something far less frantic The title track builds on a Celtic folk guitar line in its second half but is again tempered by McMorrow’s mounting harmonies
Title aside, Post Tropical seems poised for contemplative listening in the dead of winter, where landscapes can often be rendered monochromatic and spaces and gaps make themselves known “There is so little light from the warmth of the sun, ” McMorrow laments late into the album, with all but a spare keyboard to support him McMorrow’s lyrics throughout the album remembering his first love in “Cavalier,” for example convey spitefulness of the cold, but at the same time his voice is so smooth and the arrangements of Post Tropical so lush, there’s also a palpable appreciation of it Even as he ventures toward warmer climates, reaching for palm trees in “imagined destiny” on “All Points,” he is drawn to the cold “Still thinking of the cold air,” he remarks, “always thinking of the cold air ” The drums are so important on this album in par-
ticular because, without them, McMorrow’s builds to euphoric highs from his chilling lows would sound fairly cheesy In “Repeating,” vocal harmonies build in intensity to the point that they literally distort in the speakers by track s end, a move which would be predictable filler if not for the burst of cymbals that emphasizes McMorrow’s lines, then the snare roll that accompanies the rest of the song Thanks to that initial jolt, the track becomes an engaging album highlight Another artist who uses percussion strategically like this is Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon, but McMorrow manages to conjure as much emotional impact with a significantly more limited palette of sounds Post Tropical sounds aware of the musical climate that surrounds it, but exercises restraint in creative ways That is a great attribute for an artist who seems poised for a big break this year as a result of this album Here’s hoping James Vincent McMorrow can continue to be savvy with his musical toolbox And that the cold doesn’t let up too soon

“I’m the one you should fear,” growls Ace Hood on “Fear,” the opening track of his latest mixtape Starvation III Ace backs it up tales of gunplay, drugs and death pervade the tape ’ s over-capable, postLex-Luger-style production, done mostly by The Renegades Together, they form a dark backdrop for Ace to paint the finer nuances of survival on the streets But it is ultimately Ace’s fixation on God and family, along with his unrelenting energy, that gives the tape enough depth and relatability to merit mention ahead of the dozens of other thematically similar projects that drop each year Ace is an industry veteran at this point, having released four albums and a diverse array of free projects, but he has never managed to gain the attention of the hip-hop elite “Bugatti” had the potential to be his breakthrough, but it was hijacked by Future and Mike Will, relegating Ace to a footnote on his own song His 2013 album, Trials and Tribulations was generally well received, but was lost in a fast-moving summer that was instead dominated by the likes of A$AP Ferg and Migos Despite these setbacks, Ace has stuck to his grind, refusing to switch his flow or subject matter all three of the Starvation mixtapes are more or less interchangeable but none have lacked for quality Instead, they have lacked the marketing and the attention-grabbing features that have allowed the likes of Meek Mill to generate a larger following They also lack the inherent absurdity and recklessness that elevated Waka Flaka and Chief Keef enough that they championed the rap blogs (however briefly)
Ace does not waste time establishing the tone of the mixtape On “Fear,” Ace raps with full force, mostly shouting put-downs at unnamed offenders in between proclamations of his talent and wealth “Everyday” establishes Hood’s hustler persona and is a solid rap song with the exception of the hook whomever showed Ace how to use autotune needs to be banned from the studio Dancehall crooner Mavado thankfully steps in for “Buss Guns,” a violent track that includes a lot of guns and the first mention of snitching, a subject of disdain for Ace (“Rule number one, we don’t talk to the police, never to the Feds”) “Jamaica” works on similar thematic material, with Ace waking up (albeit not in a Bugatti) and proclaiming, “I swear to God I woke up on the gully side /and all they know is motherfuckin’ homicide ” None of this is lyrically impressive, but Ace’s relative confidence belies the daring hyperbole of his claims
“Boyz N Da Hood” is an appreciated change of pace, with Ace expressing concern for the younger generation and detailing the gritty conditions of his own upbringing: “Projects livin’ with his cousin / Mama on drugs and his daddy don’t care / Got a dirty glock boom he bust it ” This is all in stark contrast to the fetishizing of street life that occurs in the first few tracks and helps protect the project from inaccessibility “Brothers Keeper” continues this introspection, as Ace discusses the death of a friend in a drug deal gone wrong and pledges to protect his own family This is probably my favorite track, largely because of the
production, which uses a dark piano loop and sparse, clicking percussion over a sample of Juicy J’s “Yea Hoe” ad lib Trust me, it works
On “Fuck Your Favorite Rapper” and “Hip Hop,” Ace talks about his dissatisfaction with and his love of hip hop, respectively As hard as he tries, neither really works material like this is better left to artists more lyrically proficient than Ace “Home Invasion” is about exactly what you think it would be, but I really disliked the painfully slow Notorious B I G sample (from “Playa Hater”) It kills the vibe after every verse “Save Us” has Ace again expressing concern for society, especially the young, displaying a maturity that is generally absent in mixtapes aspiring to be street anthems The final track, “Skip the Talkin,” borrows Drake’s “Trust Issues” beat and a Kevin Cossom hook to help Ace make a love song Ace absolutely steals Drake’s flow, and that is probably a good thing, because Ace is obviously out of his league here It is not the song I would have chosen to close the project, but it is better than I thought it might be
Ultimately, Starvation III is a solid and satisfying mixtape Ace demonstrates depth and presents himself as a complex character, carefully walking the line between hood warrior and devoted father In doing so, he broadens his appeal and distinguishes himself while maintaining his reputation as a voice from the streets

reliable, although still subject to craziness, and wholly impractical in the sport of football
And maybe the Super Bowl will be a boring, sloppy slug fest And if it is, fine we will stick to warm and domes But that is not football
So, now that that is out of the way, let's tie up all the loose ends of the NFL season MVP: Peyton Manning The most valuable player this year was Pe y

a debate and I will not pretend it is
Here are his stats: 5,477 yards, 55 t

e t i o n against only 10 interceptions Just take that in Defensive Player of the Year: Richard Sherman Sherman posted the most impressive defensive statistical nugget of the year, leading the league with eight interceptions, despite being the least targeted corner in the league On top of that, Sherman also featured the lowest QB rating when targeted
Why him over Luke Kuechly, Ro b e
Ma

r o Bowman?
I do believe Sherman was just a little better at his position, while Kuechly or Mathis were probably more integral to their team I do not believe in punishing Sherman for having great teammates his performance was what it was But more than that, Sherman seized the day He m a d e t h e m o s t h i g h p r o f i l e defensive play of the year, tipping a K a e p e r n i c k p a s s a w a y f
Crabtree to his safety, and thereby sent his team to the Super Bowl Is this rewarding him for playing on a good team? Maybe But I am just a filthy writer Offensive Rookie of the Year: Keenan Allen Also warranting strong consideration was the runn i n g
c k d u o o f Gi ov a n n i Bernard and Eddie Lacey, but ultimately, I gave it to Allen I docked the backs’ points for a positional adjustment, as running b a c k s t r a d i t i o n a l l y h a v e f a i r l y smooth transitions to the next level, while wide receiver is supposed to have a steep learning cur ve in the NFL But Allen wrecked a cur ve like that girl in Orgo (you know the one) Allen broke out for 1,046 yards on 71 receptions, good for almost 15 yards per reception That is stellar production for a rookie, and he h e l p e d re v i t a l i z e Sa n Di e g o ' s offense Even more impressive is the fact that he did not earn a starting spot until week three and still managed 1000 yards Super Bowl XLVIII is a tough call, and an intriguing matchup of contrasts I am picking the Seahawks to win (and no, I do not think weather will be a significant factor) Their secondar y has not really been solved all year, and although this Broncos team would be the team to do it, I am not sure it is something that can be schemed It is just quality and skill On the other side of the ball, while I cer tainly do not expect the Broncos’ defense to get l i t u p, t h e Se a h a w

Also a source of pride?
Yeah, definitely (I would learn later the bear was briefly kidnapped by the men ' s squash team at one time It is fine now )
7 So do you have any favorite memories of Cornell, not just from squash, but from being an athlete in general?
Yeah; one of my favorite things about being on the squash team specifically is that the men ' s and women ' s teams are really close because our coaches are married
Oh, wow
So we travel together and do everything together My favorite moments are usually when we are traveling on the bus with the boys It’s just really fun, and we do a lot of weird fun games on the bus A lot of team bonding Having our teams that close is definitely rare
So you are pretty close with the men ' s team, then?
Yeah, definitely really close
8 Do you have any pre-game rituals or anything like that?
Yeah, actually I don’t know if I can tell you about it We have this ritual where we go into the locker
rooms and scream a little chant I lead the chant, which is really fun
But if anyone comes to one of our matches, 15-20 minutes before game time, you’ll hear it Is it pretty loud?
It’s very loud All the tennis players on the court complain they can hear us
9 Favorite places on campus? Any that mean anything to you? I do really like the musical steps above Olin library That’s really cool But other than that, not really
10 So, what are your expectations now for your final semester, both as an athlete and student?
I don’t know, just cherish both squash and all the friendships I’ve made, and all the memories I have here I’m really, really sad to leave
But it’s an exciting new part of my life I’m looking forward to I’m definitely going to come back and visit
Looking for a job? Yes, definitely My number one priority
And it is Super Bowl season, so Seahawks or Broncos? I’ll root for the underdog

Before we get started, what kind of name is that, Jessenia?
It is Spanish My family is Puerto Rican and Ecuadorian
1 As a senior, what has squash meant to you for the last four years?
Well squash has been my life since I was 11 years old To have it continue up to this point, where I’ve been at Cornell for four years and now captain on the the varsity team has been such an honor It’s opened so many doors for me and I’m grateful for all that it’s brought to me

This weekend, the Cornell fencing team travelled to Penn to compete in the Philadelphia Invitational against UNC, L a f a y e t t e , D u k e , No r t h w e s t e r n a n d Temple The Red cr ushed its morning bouts, coming out on top against UNC, 15-2, Lafayette, 27-0 and Duke, 16-11
Un f o r t u n a t e l y, t h e s q u a d l o s t s t e a m going into the afternoon events and fell to Nor thwestern, 18-9 and Temple, 21-6 to cap the day at three wins and two losses The Red’s foil performed well, dominating Lafayette, 9-0, UNC, 8-1 and Duke, 72 and nearly clinched a perfect sweep if not for falling to Temple, 5-4, in a tight contest
Every member of the foil squad posted a winning record on the day, with senior April Whitney, senior Christine McIntosh and sophomore Angelica Gangemi leading the way Whitney was the team ’ s top finisher, posting a 12-2 record on the day McIntosh was second with a record of 10-3 and Gangemi finished third on the team at 10-5 All three achieved double-digit victories
According to Whitney, the Red’s success in the morning bouts can be attributed to
You tried out for the team There was definitely a selection process
3 You were All-Ivy last year What was that like? That must have felt good Yeah, I was All-Ivy and All-American, which was pretty exciting for me It was a very rewarding moment It’s just nice to have all of your hard work pay off
4 Who would you say are your best friends on the team?
Obviously I would say I’m a littler closer to the upperclassmen, because we ’ ve been together a lot longer But I’d like to say I’m really close to the entire team
hard work and training during the winter session
“The morning of the Philly invitational we showed a phenomenal start as a team
It showed that our intersession really prepared us, and it was clear from the start at 8 a m that we were ready,” Whitney said
Despite finishing behind tough opponents Northwestern and Temple in the final standings, Whitney believes the squad took away valuable lessons for future play
“In the afternoon, we faced our two toughest schools In the end, they got the best of us It has given us the opportunity to see what kinds of mistakes we are making and focus our practice and worktowards improving upon these in preparation for the Ivies,” she said
The epee squad had similar success, contributing a combined record of 19-8 to the Red’s overall three victories, but succumbing to Northwestern, 6-3 and Temple, 7-2, in the afternoon Junior Olivia Weller and freshman Victoria Wines led the crew, posting 9-6 and 8-5 victories, respectively
According to Weller, the Red’s redeeming victory over Duke was a highlight of the event, as the squad lost to the Blue Devils in the same competition last year
“I was really pleased with our perfor-
5 None of your teammates were willing to embarrass you, so I am going to ask you about the Justin Bieber backpack What is that all about?
Yeah, I [laughs] think Justin Bieber is great I got that bookbag for my birthday; my 20th It was obviously a joke Obviously But I thought since I had it, I should wear it all the time I don’t wear it to class I’m not courageous enough; but I used to wear it to practice every single day and take it with me to travel matches Got a lot of questions about it
Is it a source of pride?
Yeah, definitely Whatever I love Bieber I’m all about him Love me or hate me, I love Bieber It’s cool
6 What is with the team stuffed teddy bear?
One of our teammates decided to buy a gigantic bear this year And we dress it up in Cornell squash gear It’s kind of our mascot now
mance last Sunday As a team we went 3-2, beating Duke, UNC and Lafayette I was especially proud of Epees win against Duke’s epee team, as last year at this same competition we had lost to them,” Weiller said
The sabre crew saw mixed results as the fencers defeated Lafayette and snatched a pivotal victory, 5-4, against Duke, but came up short against UNC, Northwestern and Temple The squad was led by sophomores Alaina Uhouse, 5-6, and Sarah Gruman, 510, who grabbed five wins each
Looking to the future, the Red plans to step up its mental game, emphasizing the importance of stamina and grit to match the high level of play at the Ivy League Championships, according to Whitney
“At this point in the season, the physical work is done, and it really becomes a question of mental toughness and focus
We’ve been working with Coach Iryna all season and now is the time to really give it all we ’ ve got, ” Whitney said
The Philadelphia Invitational was the final team competition before the Ivy League Championship, which commences Saturday, Feb 8th
Junior staff writer John Zakour sat down with senior Jessenia Pacheco in Belkin International Squash Center to talk about everything from her start in squash, to her final year with the Red

P rediction s for a Snow y Super Bowl
By JOHN ZAKOUR Sun Staff Wr ter
Bill Cowher former Super Bowl winner as the coach of the Steelers once said, “I’d like to have 75 degrees and sunny ever yday, but that's not football ”
You may have heard, but Super Bowl XLVIII is in New Jersey (not New York, despite what anyone says) Which means it might be cold It probably will be cold It could snow Could blizzard, as well But that is football And I hope it does snow I hope it is the first winter wonderland Super Bowl, the first Super Bowl with the field painted white Snow and bad weather games are woven into the folklore of the NFL And they are spoken about quite nostalgically That is football
The Freezer Bowl and Ice Bowl are two of the most famous playoff games in NFL history The Snow Bowl is up there as well Both games are stories of teams not only overcoming their opponents, but Mother Nature as well And they are epic stories More recently, the miracle 2007 Giants pulling off the upset in Green Bay in the freezing cold, Vinateri’s legendary 45yard kick through a snowstorm, the tuck rule game, the snow plow game, Mr Lett forgetting the rules all of these events contribute to the wealth of moments that make
up the NFL’s history and culture It is time the Super Bowl gets its own entr y in the pantheon of bad weather moments
There appears to be a contingency in the media that hates the idea of a cold weather Super Bowl
(Mike Florio and Peter King are two of the worst offenders) There seem to be two main sources of complaint, in particular, which perpetuate their aversion
The first is simply that it is going to be cold The Super Bowl can ’ t be cold It is supposed to be a
party! This just strikes me as whiny media complaining that they will not be pampered this year They may have to brave the elements while covering the greatest spectacle in American sports Logistically, a Super Bowl in a snowstorm would be tough, but the NFL can handle it
The second dogma of the opposition is that the elements could affect the game, and we do not want that sullying the most

important NFL game of the year (or any game for that matter)
Former Super Bowl losing quarterback Boomer Esiason, among others, has voiced this concern Well yes, weather might affect the game
But both teams play in the same conditions, and guess what every other round of the playoffs is susceptible to harsh conditions
The Packers and 49ers squared off in near subzero temperatures on a browned and frost-bitten Lambeau field That is just football
There is a high chance each year

that the AFC championship could be in New England in the heart of a blizzard, as opposed to the comfort of a dome The Super Bowl is just one game to determine the NFL's champion, but if you are interested in truly crowning the best team in the league, this is not the sole determination With one game, variance will always be high
