As for our cover, we were lucky enough to spend some time with Cordillera Ranch resident Rose Monday and Maggie Vessey. Rose is one of the most respected 800m coaches in the world, and is also one of the coaches for Team USA’s Track and Field teams for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games. Maggie is currently a world-class 800m runner that is training with Rose, and has her sights also set on the Olympic Games. It’s a fascinating story about two women, 25 years apart, bonded by shared desires to fulfill dreams in a discipline they are amazingly passionate about and - though they have tried- neither seem to be able to retire from it. Again, I truly hope that you enjoy this May/June 2012 issue of Cordillera Ranch Living. A lot of work goes into the magazine, and we are constantly looking to improve. Golf GOLF
Right now is the perfect time to come out and enjoy one of the best golf courses in the State of Texas. Cordillera Ranch was recently rated the #5 golf course in The Dallas Morning News Best of Texas Golf edition for 2012. This is quite an honor considering the rich tradition of great golf courses across the state (see page 26 for more). Golf Course Superintendent Mark Semm and his team have the course in wonderful shape. May also marks an initiative called Welcome to Golf Month and PGA Free Lesson Month. The professional staff at Cordillera Ranch will be working on encouraging new golfers to come out and give the game a try throughout the month. We also are offering complimentary 10-minute lessons to all of our members. The tournament schedule is definitely in high gear and we have a number of great events planned that I hope you will be able to participate in. May 3-4 we will once again host the popular Guest Days. This is a wonderful way to bring out a few friends or clients, showcase all that Cordillera Ranch has to offer and enjoy a great day on the course, all at a discounted rate. The Cordillera Women’s Golf Association will be hosting their first ever Member-Guest event on May 9-10 titled the Cordillera Ranch Round-Up. They have worked extremely hard in putting together a special event and we look forward to hosting the tournament. The Third Annual Couples Stampede is set for May 12 and is the most popular Couples event of the year. The Men’s Club Championship also takes place May 18-20 when 2011 champion Brad Saathoff will look to defend his title. There is not much time for rest when moving into June as we still have a few events on the schedule for you to enjoy. The Men’s Match Play Championship is set for June 1-3 and we have a Men’s One-Day Member-Guest planned for Friday June 15. As you can see, there are plenty of ways to enjoy playing golf here at Cordillera Ranch. Even if you do not care to play in a tournament, just come out and enjoy the game and the beauty of the golf course.

PRODUCT FEATURE By Marc DeWall The Cordillera Ranch golf club recently purchased a GC2 Launch Monitor from Foresight Sports. The investment the Club has made in purchasing this unit is significant in our efforts to continue to provide our members with the latest technology trends in fitting and teaching. The GC2 is somewhat new to the market but has received rave reviews from PGA Tour players. It is incredibly accurate and because it is wireless it provides great flexibility in how and where we utilize it. The unit measures ball speed, carry distance and total distance, launch angle, side spin and back spin. We will receive the second part of the launch monitor this August when it becomes available. The HMT (Head Measurement Technology) measures the way the clubhead behaves through impact, while the GC2 measures the way the ball launches. Both components are important for fitting, but the HMT will add another element in our teaching program. What is amazing to me is that most people do not realize how being fit properly with a launch monitor can truly change their game. The information received from the launch monitor can give improvement and confidence that goes far beyond science. How to Play Downhill Lies By Marc DeWall In the last issue we addressed some tips for hitting off uphill lies. This issue we will take a look at downhill lies. The downhill shot is difficult because the ball is below the normal stance level. The tendencies are a push, thin or slice shot. Gravity always pulls the player center ahead of the ball, so here are some steps to hit a downhill shot effectively: • Play the ball slightly back of the middle of the stance. • Set shoulders parallel to the ground. • Aim to the left an amount commensurate with the slope. • Allow for the club being de-lofted which will cause the ball to travel lower and hotter with less carry. • Swing along the slope and stay with the shot longer.
2012 USGA Rules Change

830.336.4653 | mdewall@cordilleraranch.com Every 4 years the USGA and R&A meet along with other golfing bodies to discuss and make changes to the Rules of Golf. This is done by following the historical principles that have been in place with the understanding that the Rules must be clear, comprehensive and relevant to the game today and that the penalties are appropriate. There are a significant number of changes this year and in each issue I will address one of the changes. As always, please feel free to stop by the Golf Shop and ask one of the golf professionals if you have any questions or need clarification. Addressing the Ball This definition has been amended so that a player has addressed the ball simply by grounding his club immediately in front of or behind the ball, regardless of whether or not he has taken his stance. Therefore, the Rules generally no longer provide for a player addressing the ball in a hazard (see also related change to Rule 18-2b). Marc DeWall, PGA Director of Golf

TIPSANDTRICKS PLAYING THE COURSE
We are often asked how to best play certain holes on the golf course here at Cordillera Ranch. Hole #5 at Cordillera Ranch is the number one handicap hole on the course is often recognized as a hole that a player can make a big number on in a hurry. Five-time Men’s Club Champion Jarratt Jones shares a few of the strategies involved in playing this hole with the hope that it may help you lower your score the next time you play: Hole 5 613 Yards Par 5 This hole is a great par 5 that The Dallas Morning News ranks among the best 18 holes in Texas. Most importantly, this is almost always a three shot hole, so position off the tee is more important than bombing it. Favor the left rough line along the hillside which will allow the ball to come back to the left center of the fairway. A tee shot down the right side can end up in the rough, or worse, bark mulch and from there, your second will be extremely difficult. From position A down the left center, your second should also be played down the left side; just right of the single oak tree in the rough is a good line. If you bomb it off the tee, you can cut across the corner of the creek but beware of the tree that guards this line. At best, you can get a 50-yard pitch choosing this route. A safer approach to the left gives you 100-110 yards into a fairly large target. This hole offers you an alternate fairway for your second shot, but this is a choice of last resort. The target is smaller and the third from there is blind and over the creek. If you go right off the tee; Position however, this may be A your only alternative. The fifth green is large and features a variety of pins. When the pin is towards the back, you can use the backboards to get it close. The valley runs back-to-front, so be careful with the putt from the middle of the green towards the front. Good luck negotiating what is sometimes called the “Amen Corner” at Cordillera Ranch.

The Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course at Cordillera Ranch was ranked as the No. 5 golf course in Texas in The Dallas Morning News annual ranking of Texas courses. Each year the newspaper publishes its renowned “Texas Golf” section, which ranks the top 100 courses in the state. The ranking gives Cordillera Ranch the top spot in the state among private residential golf course communities and also the No.1 ranked golf course in the San Antonio / Austin / Hill Country area. In addition to the overall course ranking, the 16th hole at Cordillera Ranch was again voted as one of the “Most Beautiful Holes in Texas” and “Best Holes in Texas” by the panel for the fourth year in a row. “People in the golf community look forward to The Dallas Morning News ‘Texas Golf’ publication each and every year,” said Marc DeWall, Head Golf Professional at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch. “It is certainly one of the most comprehensive and thorough golf course rankings designated by a group of respected panelists from across the state. It is a huge honor to secure the No. 5 ranking when looking at the many great courses in our state.” The 2012 accolades continue Cordillera Ranch’s consistent recognition as one of the state’s premier golf courses. Cordillera Ranch was also named “The Best New Course in Texas” in the 2008 “Texas Golf” section and
debuted at No. 4 in 2009 and has remained in the top six every year. This year marks the 24th year that The Dallas Morning News has published “Texas Golf,” where nearly 100 panelists from across the state submit votes to determine the “Texas Golf” rankings. “I have played a lot of golf courses around Texas, and the course at Cordillera Ranch is as good as any I’ve seen” said Drew Gillen, one of this year’s panelists and an amateur golfer from Tyler. “It’s the kind of course that is incredibly challenging but still fair. What makes it so unique is that each hole is so memorable. The natural beauty of the course makes it something special.” Course designer Jack Nicklaus was asked what makes the Cordillera Ranch golf course so special and unique and replied, “First of all, it’s a good piece of property — no, a great piece of property.” Nicklaus also said,. “Because of the quality of the existing property, we had to move very little dirt to create good golf. The terrain had a lot of natural elements that were just terrific. There were great trees and wonderful little streams that ran through the property. A passion for any activity is something that is inexplicable and powerful. It can take us in varied directions, and teach us much about ourselves. For Rose Monday and Maggie Vessey, the passion for running is something neither of them could ever shake, and is poised to take them all the way to the 2012 Summer Olympic Games this summer. From as early as Rose Monday can remember, she wanted to be an Olympian. The daughter of an electrician and a stay at home mom, Monday grew up in California and was attracted to running very early on. “I have always wanted to be an Olympian. Ever since the ‘68 Olympics, I saw Bob Beamon break the world record and I wanted to do that when I grew up. I was fast and could beat all the boys, so I knew I had ability. Initially, I wanted to be a sprinter. I walked on the college team at Cal State Northridge, and my coach

moved me over to run the 800m my sophomore year. And I’ve been doing it ever since.” Monday was on scholarship for her sophomore year and onward, and was a member of the #1 Track and Field team in the United States at Cal State Northridge, where 80 percent of her team made the 1980 Olympic Squad, but as luck would have it, President Carter announced the boycott of the ’80 Olympics and so Monday missed the chance to compete. Although Rose did not qualify
for the 1980 Olympic Trials, she was a two-time All-American in the 4x400m and 4 x 800m relays helping her team win two national championships. After graduation with a Political Science degree, Monday continued running and qualified for the ’84, ’88, ’92, and ’96 Olympic Trials. With only the top three advancing from the Trials to join the actual Olympic team, Monday failed to make the team. Monday married her husband, John, in 1980 after they were set up on a blind
date, and after a long wait, the Mondays had Mary (18) and Jack (16) in the ‘90s. Rose had dabbled in coaching during the early ‘90s, but with kids on the way, she knew that the time constraints were going to be difficult. “I coached an all girl’s school in Southern California for a short while. It was incredibly rewarding, and I had enjoyed it. However, we waited 13 years to have kids because we were always waiting until after the next Olympics. I knew that I didn’t want somebody
For Monday, the victories were sweet, and also helped to calm some of her own inner demons. “It took a lot of the sting out of not making the Olympics. I think a lot of it was mental. I was so focused on the outcome at the Olympics Trials, but if I went in focused and just stayed on track, I ran so much better, and that’s what I did at the Master’s. I didn’t focus on the outcome, but only on my training. I was so nervous at the Olympics Trials. The Master’s World Championship was just

At the time, Monday was, and still is, handling her duties as the Development Coordinator for USA Track and Field in 800m and 1500m events for the past 15 years. As the coordinator she scouts the athletes, assists them, and gets them with the right coaches so as to ensure the future of the discipline. However, as the years wore on, and as Monday’s fam-

She slowly returned to running after the children’s births as a way to shake off some weight, and quickly discovered that her passion for the sport was still as strong as ever. Monday decided to compete for the World’s Master’s Championship in 1999 and won two bronzes at the age of 40. Two years later she went to Australia for another Championship and won a gold and a silver.

Monday continued training and competing, and eventually called University of Texas at San Antonio to request access to their track for her drills. “They allowed me to train with the college team. When they told me I could use the track, I kind of stayed behind them because I didn’t want to upset some of the other athletes. The coach knew I wasn’t running all out, so I eventually did, and they quickly started doing my drills and workouts.” Having
ily grew, she saw a need to shift priorities. “I left UTSA in ’07, and I saw it as a time that I wanted to be with my family. I looked at a picture of my daughter at her 8th grade dance. I missed the dress selection, the dance, the photos, all of it. And I had this enormous sense of sadness. I had been gone for so long training and racing and coaching, and I just wanted to stop. So I gave UTSA six months notice, and I didn’t tell the athletes until we had won the Conference Championship, and it was hard. Some of my mentors questioned my decision, but I knew I was doing the right thing. I was able to spend quality time with my

family, and go to Jack and Mary’s sports and school events while continuing my position as Middle Distance Development and High Performance Coordinator for USA Track and Field, and I kept a couple of post collegiate emerging elite athletes. I was fortunate to have my cake and eat it too.” At the age of 45, Monday officially retired from running in 2004, and held the World’s #1 Masters 800m ranking up to the day of her retirement. Back in California, while Monday was winning Master’s championships, a young lady by the name of Maggie Vessey was slowly climbing the ranks of the running world. Vessey, also a California native, knew early on that sports would take her quite far. “I was involved in plays and modeling throughout school, but through all of it I was running. I played soccer, too. In terms of sports, I saw quickly that I stood out. In high school, I wanted to be a veterinarian. I knew that I wanted to get a full scholarship to college, and I knew that track would get me there. By the end of my sophomore year, I started to get very serious about track and focus. The school I was at didn’t have great facilities, so I transferred and went to a different school that had a better program.” Vessey graduated and attended Cal Poly San Luis Obispo on a track scholarship. Originally a 400m and 200m runner, Vessey moved over to the 800m during her sophomore year and was an All American in 2003. “In 2003 I made the Outdoor Nationals for the first time, but I didn’t get out of the first round. In 2004 I was injured. In 2005, I came back and I was second place at the Outdoors, and then I graduated Cum Laude. I knew I could graduate, move home, and get a job. But because of my results at the Outdoors, Asics (shoe manufacturer) gave me a contract to keep running. They gave me a contract from ’05 through ’08 which led up to the Olympic Trials. I took a job at a property management company while I was under contract, and I was also training full time. I was working with the Santa Monica Track Club, which was Carl Lewis’ old team. It was grueling, but wonderful - we were training upwards of six hours a day.”
With her sights set firmly on the Olympics, Vessey switched coaches. However, she was injured that year and her dreams of Olympic glory were dashed. “I wasn’t able to do much from ’05 to ’08. I was so depressed. I literally lived in a barn, I was going to join the Peace Corp, and Asics was going to drop me. I moved home and just nursed my injuries and was going to quit running. I still wanted to travel, and I knew that running would get me there, but the Peace Corps would do it, too. The Peace Corps sent me a whole bunch of information I was to fill out to get the visas and work lined up for me, and I was filling out all their forms. It was a lot of paperwork, and so for whatever reason I just got up and went for a run. Just a relaxing run. And as I ran, just like what Rose experienced, I immediately knew that running was going to be a part of my life. That outlet was still a passion of mine.” Vessey quickly returned to the track, and without a coach, just trained. “I had no funding, and no real reason to do it, but I wanted to make the 2008 Olympic Trials. Here I was, living in a barn, and five minutes away from dropping everything and joining the Peace Corps, but I decided I really wanted to make the ’08 Trials. So I started doing some of the smaller races, and I was winning everything. I ended up setting a personal record, and sure enough, I had qualified for the Trials. I still have no money, and my family is driving me to meets, and getting my hotel rooms. We were the biggest dog and pony show you’d ever seen. My sister was cooking for me, and was my assistant on the field. I’m wearing a plain old surfer top because I don’t have any sponsors.”

At the 2008 Olympic Trials, Vessey took fifth. While only the top three make the Olympic team, she saw how close she was to actually making the Olympics, and so did a certain elite coach named Rose Monday. Vessey continues, “Because of my finish at the Trials, I was asked to race in Paris, and I was so excited. I get to represent the US. You can’t buy that USA jersey. It was a huge deal for me. I also got a grant from USATF to fund my development, and since this is the only money I’ m getting I figured ‘Well, this is clearly the path for me’. I finally found an agent, who got me into a Nike event, and I won it.” And as Vessey rose in the running ranks, Monday and the USATF team were taking notice. Monday says, “I saw Maggie run, and had some of my own athletes compete against her. When I saw her run in ‘08, she closed the last portion of the race faster than anybody in the world. The front end she would hang back, but the ending was phenomenal. I knew that she had the ability to be one of the best in the world. So she didn’t know it but I was working to get her that funding from USATF and ensure her success.” Vessey adds, “We had talked on the phone leading up to when we actually met from 2009 onward. She was just mentoring me from afar. I would have a good race and I would get a call from some lady named Rose Monday. She would just send me encouragement and words of wisdom. I didn’t really know anything about her. I knew she was with USA Track and Field. I had this picture
in my mind of who she was, but we had never met.” 2009 was a huge year for Vessey, she ranked #6 in the world and made her first World Championship team. She adds, “I went from nothing to being ranked 6th in the world. It was pretty surreal.” She had set a previous record of 2:01 in the 800m, and then set the fastest time in the world at 1:57. However, in 2010, something changed. “I bombed. I went from 6th to 15th in the world. I knew I had to make some changes, and that’s when Rose came into my life.” Vessey explains, “I had asked my college coach if she would coach me, but
she couldn’t. Instead, she referred me to Rose. I felt an immediate connection with her - I really liked her. When I met her, my first impression was that ‘She is so tall, and her hair is so red!’ But she was warm and she had all the knowledge and I had none.” Monday adds, “She’s in Cali and I’m in Texas. I don’t like long distance coaching – the art of coaching is knowing how to change an athlete’s numbers up, and each athlete is different. I also like being able to look in your eyes as you walk on the track. At this level, I want to be able to watch much more closely.” The Mondays were living on the north side of San Antonio, as the kids were attending Reagan High School. Damon Cristofilis (Cordillera Ranch Preferred Builder) built their home in the Stone Oak area, and he frequently invited the Mondays out for gatherings at Cordillera Ranch. Monday explains, “The first time I drove through the gate, I knew I wanted to live here. I lived a very hectic life and every time I drove over the hill, it instantly relaxed me. It wasn’t supposed to be in the near future, but Damon kept showing us lots when we would come over for dinner. And then he showed us this lot. It was a great deal, and so John and I bought it. We figured we’d build on it in 30 years. Damon said, ‘If you don’t buy it, you’re
nuts. If you don’t buy it, I’m never showing you another lot.’ And no sooner than we had bought the lot, he started encouraging us to have the lot cleared. Then he got us to talk to an architect. And the next thing you know we’re building a house. Although both of us felt the stress in the risk of building in an economic depression, and John’s job with AT&T relocating all of its senior managers to Dallas, we decided to go ahead with the construction despite all the uncertainty. We also figured that if John got transferred we would just sell it.“ Obviously, that didn’t happen. Last May, while Maggie and Rose were at a meet, the movers permanently relocated the Monday family to their new Cordillera Ranch home. Vessey comes from California for three weeks at a time and stays in the home and she couldn’t be happier. Recently turning 30, and with her friends back home in California raising families and focusing on careers, Vessey is upbeat. “I haven’t given up anything, and I don’t think I’m missing out on anything. I’ve gained so much. I’m one of the first people in my family to even have a passport. I went to college for free. I’ve tried things, and I’ve failed at things. I’ve succeeded at others. I have goals that this will help me with.” That “goal” is the Olympics. Vessey says, “First we go to Eugene, Oregon and compete at the Olympic Trials in June. We’re going to qualify for the Olympic team. That’s the goal. And then we’re off for this summer’s Games in London. And for that, my goal is to podium. I want to medal. I know I can do it.”
And Monday is feeling confident as well. “I’ll sometimes say ‘I wish I was doing this race with you.’ I’ve got some arthritis and can’t run anymore, but it’s just so exhilarating to be running fast. It’s such a high to go fast. You have a stadium filled and you’re running fast and you’re winning. It’s the most amazing feeling in the entire world. You had a plan, you executed it, and then you want that feeling over and over again. And right now, Maggie is executing beautifully.” For both Vessey and Monday, this summer’s Olympics games will be the culmination of a lifetime of dreams. In a sport that has inspired them both, taken them around the world, and brought them such joy, together they will reach the pinnacle of their sport. While running is a solitary activity, to stand on the podium this summer will have only happened because of their combined efforts. Separated by almost 20 years in age, but with a uni-
fied passion for running, they will both be fulfilling dreams that started very early on. They are both from California. They both run the 800m, and they are both set to fulfill their dreams of Olympic glory. For Maggie as an athlete at the pinnacle of her discipline, and for Rose, she will finally make it to the Olympics as one of the coaches of the United States Olympic Track and Field team. Vessey says, “My first memory of running was with my cousin and I remember just feeling beautiful. I felt complete. Every muscle in my body was operating the way that it wanted. It was so exhilarating. I still like to do it because it’s such a challenge. Every day it exposes your weakness in your life, your character, and how you’re living. The better I get on the track, the better person I become.” Monday adds, “Maggie reminds me of myself 20 years ago. Could I mentor and train somebody like Rose Monday? Absolutely.”

Now that the deadline for filing your 2011 taxes, or an extension, has passed, consider these timely suggestions on what to do with your money now. Financial issues should still be at the top of your mind and these suggestions might improve your fiscal health.
• While tax shelters are certainly a thing of the past, retirement plans (aka “qualified plans”) are an effective way to shelter income and capital gains from taxes. Every year, maximize contributions to these plans so they can accumulate value over future years. These include, 401k’s and IRA’s, either regular or Roth. An investment vehicle that everyone should want, but may not be qualified to have, is a Roth IRA. Not only does it accumulate tax- free with regular additions, but you never pay tax on withdrawals when you take the money out for retirement as you would in a regular IRA. Furthermore, unlike a regular IRA, you never have to take your money out of this shelter. In other words, there is no required minimum distribution. Would you like to have a Roth IRA but exceed the income limitations? Contribute after tax dollars to a regular IRA, then convert that IRA to a Roth IRA. There are no income limitations to qualify for a conversion. Of course, check with your tax advisor.
Things to do With Your Money...

• This is an important year to review your estate plan. In 2012, the maximum estate that a married couple can pass on to their heirs tax free is $10,000,000.00. Right now even the lifetime gifts that you can give are that high. Most tax professionals expect that to change beginning in 2013. So, time is of the essence to seek advice from a board certified trust and estate tax attorney. While “death planning” is not a cheery topic, timing is critical now. • Assess the cash levels that you have currently. They are certainly not earning enough to stay up with inflation. Many investors are maintaining far too much cash, much of it for a “wait and see” purpose. This is detrimental for reaching your long term financial goals. Do not assume that the interest on cash will someday get back to levels enjoyed during the 1990’s. That is not likely to happen due to a very lazy monetary policy by the Fed. Just about every other asset class has handily beat cash returns over the last three years. Talk to your wealth and investment advisor about what is the appropriate level of cash.
• Think twice about giving up the accessibility of your money in annuities. These investments are non-diversified in terms of having one guarantor (the insurance company). Fees are high and returns are low. There are high penalties for early withdrawal from annuities. Talk to at least two wealth advisors before signing on the dotted line for an annuity. Unfortunately, they are often used as an easy way out of a confusing investment landscape. • Now that your CPA has finished your tax filing, don’t forget your friend for another year. Make an appointment to seek some advice on how you could save some tax dollars next year. It is amazing how few people do this. Some words of advice: send cookies first and wait to make that appointment until after May 1. We believe that investors are best served working with an independent team: their bank or trust advisor, an investment advisor, a cpa, and their estate attorney. We can facilitate getting all of these professionals together at once. This is a scary thought, I know, but it could be a pivotal moment in your financial future. After all, you are the customer and where you are headed is what matters.

They have their cocktails paired like you would be going to a wine dinner but each course is paired with a one-bite dish that explodes with flavor. Very fun and playful atmosphere. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT THE EVENT PLANNING PROCESS? My favorite part is of the process is the client. They allow me into the special
events in their lives. I have been a part of planning proposals, weddings, anniversaries, showers and more. Events that occur once in a lifetime and I am invited into those moments. With soaring fuel costs, ever-increasing security protocol and a never ending array of new fees, many travelers are finding private jet charters to be the perfect solution to their air travel needs, both for personal as well as business trips.

The biggest hurdle for most people that are considering a private jet charter is cost. Private jets are seen as luxuries that only the super-rich can afford, but that’s not always the case. Brian Cook, President of JetLinx of San Antonio, says, “It’s only expensive if you don’t value your time. By Meghan Hunter It is not that homework itself is so bad, it is simply that it interferes with other more entertaining or social pursuits. As parents, we are faced with the challenging title of “Enforcer.” The homework is assigned, gingerly wadded and shoved in the bottom of the backpack, and sent home. Soon after baseball practice, gymnastics, swimming, and piano lessons, our precious cherub faced elementary kids, awkward middle school kids, or sullen teenagers plop down on the sofa to relax and are immediately confronted by the looming question, “Honey, do you have any homework?” At this point, one of three things will occur. The cherub will immediately run to their backpack, take out their assignment and get to work in the designated homework area with a perfectly sharpened pencil. The awkward growing child, will tell you that they are starving and could not possibly concentrate until the pantry has been completely emptied, or you may simply get, “No, I don’t have any homework.” 95% of the time, this answer is false information and prompts “The Enforcer” to dive headfirst into the backpack in search of the wadded paper in the bottom.

Chapter two of our evening begins when the homework finally makes it out of the backpack. “The Enforcer” glances over the child’s shoulder only to discover that a sharpened pencil and a tidy, well-lit desk are not going to be enough to complete this assignment, the likes of which anyone over the age of 35 has never seen before!! As our child gets more involved in their homework, parents start to busy themselves with things around the house content with the fact that their student must be a genius to understand the assignment sitting in front of them. All of a sudden we look over only to discover that our student’s brow is furrowed and they appear confused. Their child looks to them as the “all-knowing fixer of all things,” and states simply, “I don’t get this. Can you help me?” Our well-meaning parent freezes like a deer caught in the headlights… Education has been changing along the same lines as our society in general. To put it simply, kids know more than their parents did at the same age and they work very differently than we did. With technology and information at their fingertips, students are equipped and able to take their learning to new levels,
TIPS Parents want to be all things to their children, but that is not realistic. Remember that it is OK if you do not know the answer. Try to help find the answer or guide your student to the answer through all of the resources available to you such as teachers, peers, online resources, and experts. Encourage independence and creativity, and stay positive. • Invite a study group over to your house. It may cost you a lot of snacks, but the kids will have support from each other, and you may learn something as well! • Visit teacher websites for clarification, information, and suggested resources. Make it easy by adding direct links from your computer desktop for
sometimes surpassing what their parents can comfortably help them with. They are also faced with a new level of apathy toward tasks they find mundane or not useful. The age old argument of mathematics practice not being worth the time because, “I can just use a calculator,” is always a fun Tuesday night battle! The reality of course is that most parents know the value of logic, reasoning, problem solving, and mental acuity that math practice provides, but how do we explain that to an eighth-grader more interested in what their best friend just posted on Facebook? As a certified teacher, owner of an education-based business, and mother of middle school boys, I am fairly sure that the above scenario is only a somewhat exaggerated reality in many homes on any given school night. However, no matter where your children fall in terms of age, ability, and motivation, parents share an overwhelming desire to support their children to the best of their ability and see them succeed. Here are a few ways for you to support your child through tough spells of homework, projects, and motivational valleys. Showing a genuine interest in your child’s struggles is automatic for most parents. The key is to take our interest and turn it into effective ways to support our child. Be aware of the fact that your children are unique individuals with unique interests. We as parents may not always be the best source of help for our kids. Be sure that you allow them their own successes and failures without projecting yours on them. Learning together and showing genuine interest is healthy and
each subject. • Don’t be afraid to admit you do not know something or can’t remember. Learning side by side can be very rewarding and supportive. • Encourage and support self-driven learning. • Point out ways that you use “skills you were taught in school.” • Maintain some form of academic pursuit over summer breaks. The “summer slide” is a reality. • Use on-line resources to help encourage and motivate your student. Everything imaginable is on the internet. Art museums, science museums, historical societies, math games, writing resources, etc. are all at your fingertips. Digging deeper into a subject can sometimes spark interest. • Do not project your struggles on to your child. Allow them to find their niche. • Stay positive even through the struggles. • Do not be afraid to seek professional help. Tutors
rewarding, but there will be times that parents should step back and “outsource.” Encourage your student to learn about subjects they are interested in. Self-motivated learners are likely to find connections in their academic pursuits that may spark interest in other subjects. Finally, remember that at the end of the day, you are not just the “Enforcer,” but also the coach, shoulder to lean on, and cheerleader. Help your student find and decipher information, independently produce something they can be proud of, and forge their own unique path.

The Little Blue Sliver THE BEAUTY OF THE HILL COUNTRY AND THE ATTENTION IT DEMANDS By Ben Schooley
When I was a kid, I would lie on my back amongst the tall grass behind my family’s home, a few yards from the little creek that ran through the field, and I would stare at the clouds. It’s a mundane activity, but an inspiring one. I could gaze at those slow-moving puffs of clouds and see all sorts of shapes and figures in them. Somewhere along the way, my thoughts would meander, I would slip in and out of sleep, and I would be refreshed. Greg Glowka has a similar slant. “When I was a kid, I would go to my grandpa’s place and fish in his old pond. And from as early as I can remember, I would stare at where the sky would meet the horizon, and it would just float my boat. I could do it day in and day out, and I do it to this day. So I’m always staring at the horizons, and it’s just something about the beauty of the Hill Country. And it’s always captured my attention and demanded my efforts. That’s my favorite part of my paintings…it’s putting in that little blue sliver on the painting…I could do that over and over and never tire of it.” A lifelong artist, Greg has been putting that “little blue sliver” of the horizon on his landscape paintings since day one. “The man that lived across the alley from me when I was a kid was the brother of Porfirio Salinas, who was a pretty famous bluebonnet artist back in the day. I was exposed to his art early on, and my other neighbor was an artist, and I would poke around these guys’ garages, and it made my mouth drop. And so I doodled. And doodled some more. In the 7th grade, I got ‘Mono’ and

spent the entire time sketching. Somehow I got into those ‘starving artist’ shows, and I loved every minute of it.” With such a strong propensity for art, Greg’s parents saw early on that he had a future with his creativity. “My dad was my biggest supporter. He would always tell me – ‘You are so lucky. You’ll never have to get a real job. You don’t even know how lucky you are.’ And even my mom got into it. She would always applaud my efforts, and it just motivated me to do another drawing.” After high school, Greg attended San Antonio College for graphic design courses. “No sooner than I started classes, I got a job doing graphics work for a local company. I was kind of a oneman graphics department. And I painted the owner a landscape as a gift, and she told me that I should be a full-time artist. So she told me to take some art classes at UT, and she would pay me the same salary for half the workload if I’d take classes. So for 2 or 3 years I took and re-took classes on art. I couldn’t get enough of it. Finally, I entered an art show, and was accepted. At the same time, the graphics job went away, and so I was flying as a full time artist for the first time. Nanette Richardson Fine Art Gallery agreed to show my work, and they were selling.” After moving to Bulverde, Greg began to focus heavily on his art. “I’d run a painting into Nanette, and by the time I got home there would be a message on my machine saying that it had sold. It was wonderful. So during this time in Bulverde I really began to focus exclusively on the art and hone my skills.”
With any solitary activity comes its challenges. “I moved out to Fischer a few years back, and I love the hell out of it. However, the loneliness is tough. It’s the hardest part of my job. I spend so much time by myself painting, and sketching. And the next thing I know, I haven’t talked to anybody the entire day. So a few years back I burned out. I just wasn’t inspired. So a friend worked at a golf course, and got me a job mowing the fairways. I think I made $8 an hour. I quit after a short bit, but I tell ya, if I could make $80k mowing lawns, I’d do it in a second. Accountants work their entire careers, then freak out and run off to become painters or musicians. So maybe I’ll do the opposite. After a lifetime of this, I’ll burn up and mow lawns for a living. Who knows!” Greg laughs. Utilizing the beauty that God has supplied him with, Greg works daily to capture it on canvas. “I’m trying to get more into Plein-Art paintings. It’s the act of taking your canvas out to the source of the painting, and doing the art right there. Normally I take photos, return to my studio, and paint. I need to just go out in the field, sit down, and paint. It’s good for me, and it’s good for my art. It keeps it fresh.” Greg is currently on display at the Nanette Richardson Fine Art Gallery and the Fredericksburg Art Gallery. You’ll also find him sitting in a field atop one of the majestic hills surrounding his studio in Fischer, fighting off the solitude, and enjoying the endless inspiration. “I love the hell out of my little house up in Fischer. I miss the conveniences sometimes of being closer to San Antonio, but as we all know, that cursed town is coming closer to each of us everyday. Summer is fast approaching, so it is time to start figuring out how to entertain your kids for the 12 weeks of school vacation. Luckily the Club has the answer‌Cordillera Ranch Summer Camps! This year we are featuring 5 NEW CAMPS, totaling 13 different camp formats! The Clubs’ camps are staffed with enthusiastic counselors and provide a great outlet for your kids to learn a new hobby or sport, create lifelong friendships and get out of the house to enjoy the great outdoors.

New Camps – New Fun – New Traditions! 2012 brings with it 5 new and exciting camps and creates more diversity in our camp line-up. Girls Camp June 5th – 8th & July 10th – 13th This camp is just for, you guessed it, the girls! Centered around everything that girls enjoy; swimming, sports, arts and crafts, dress up, team building, and horses, just to name a few. This camp will let the girls express their free spirits with some song and dance and most importantly, allow them to just be themselves. Boys Camp June 5th – 8th & July 10th – 13th We can’t just let the girls have all the fun, our Boys Camp is all about team work, adventure, and sportsmanship! Boys Camp will feature fishing, archery, climbing, building and caving along with much more. Behind the Scenes Camp June 26th – 29th This camp is based off our popular Tennis, Sports and Adventure Camp by going Behind the Scenes to local parks, museums and recreation centers. Campers will spend the week learning about animals, nature, history, science, sports and more!
Swim Camp June 12th – 15th & July 3rd – 6th Our Swim Camps feature two different formats. Our first camp dates will be held at the Clubs’ pools with our Water Safety Expert teaching, organizing, and coaching all campers to swim at a higher level. Our second week of Swim Camp is for the intermediate to advanced swimmer. It will incorporate travel to local, pools, lakes, parks and recreation centers so that kids can swim to their heart’s desire! Cooking Camp with Chef Kopecky June 19th – 22nd & July 24th – 27th Our very own Chef Kirsten Kopecky, graduate of the Le Cordon Blue Culinary School, will be teaching youngsters kitchen safety, proper food handling, food preparation, cooking/baking techniques and presentation. Our Outdoor Adventure Camp allows kids to push the traditional camp boundaries a little by incorporating, kayaking, zip lining, and a visit to our very own Gun Club, plus much more! Horse Camp June 19th – 22nd, July 17th – 20th, July 31st – August 3rd & August 14th - 17th Horse Camp focuses on complete horsemanship skills and emphasizes safety, learning and fun! The Marriage of Technology and Interior Design By Craig Colvin Luxury home owners are often challenged when trying to incorporate the often polar opposite technological advancements with visual appeal. This is usually a result of the fact that, traditionally, interior designers and custom electronics integrators go head-to-head when it comes to the layout and needs of a room. Interior designers want to remove big, bulky industrial boxes that interfere with the flow and style of a room while electronic integrators struggle to meet the needs of the homeowner’s desires to have a space that has both form and function. The compromise is often that formal living spaces are left alone while other areas of the home are fitted with the electronics that make life fun. This doesn’t have to be the case, though. When custom electronic integrators join forces with interior designers, the results are elegant, well-designed homes that are both functional and immaculate.

As both the son and brother of interior designers, I understand that room aesthetics often play a larger part in our industry than electronics do. But, as our lifestyles become increasingly dependent upon technology, the need to create a flawless union with design has become critical. Debbie Baxter, President and CEO at Baxter Design Group, explains it like this, “It is critical for the interior designer and the AV subcontractor to partner when it comes to the integration of electronics in a space.” However, this can feel like a daunting task, especially when there is a large amount of equipment and design that necessitates them being hidden. To that end, the Branson Design Group utilizes three clever strategies to ensure that our products assimilate into the plans of the designer as opposed to competing with them. The three strategies for integrating electronic components are: moving them, hiding them and showcasing them.
Showcase it! High performance gear may just be made to stand out! If the piece is unusual or grand, make it a prominent feature. Modern and contemporary designs are excellent vehicles to boast the electronics of a room; don’t be afraid to use them as focal point. Electronics can also substitute for art. Pieces like retro amplifiers and vintage turntables or reference speakers can be a fun and inviting element in a room.
Move it! Putting electronics into a centralized location can do wonders for minimizing clutter and streamlining the look of a room. One way we do this at Branson Design is through the use of equipment racks that can be easily recessed into a closet space, wall or small room. This type of centralized audiovisual system keeps the room’s aesthetics intact and is easily incorporated in new and existing homes. It allows everything throughout the whole home to be stored in one central area. A big draw to having components hidden is that elements like video and music can be played throughout the home without having to display electronic components in every room. Not only does this remove clutter from the main rooms, but from the entire home as well. Using a high quality, two-way control system virtually eliminates the need to access these components because the equipment is communicates with and is controlled by keypads, touch-panel controls and remotes. Hide it! According to Baxter, “Designers love to design for something. We look for challenges like the containment of televisions [and] the covering of unsightly speakers.” There are several novel ways that this can be done. When components can’t be hidden away, camouflaging them creatively is another way to integrate them into a design. One way that this can be done is to custom paint them to match the existing decor / theme of the room. Speakers, for example can be made to look like the wall or area surrounding them. The matching of tone and color can make any component disappear into the design instead of being a stark contrast to it. An alternative to painting would be covering your components with fabric that matches the color palette and theme in the space.
Even though audio/visual integrators and interior designers have historically been at odds, one thing they always agree upon is that a lighting control system is the best way to show off a house once the interior and electronic designs are complete. Controlled light adds elegance and charm to any room in the home. Centralized systems don’t require multiple switches in the walls, thus creating visually appealing and decorator friendly spaces. Existing homes can also easily be retrofitted with communicating switches without the need of running any additional
wire. Controlled lighting systems allow for moods and scenes that highlight the grandeur of a home and can be controlled instantaneously with the single touch of a button. As the owner of the Branson Design Group, I understand that forging relationships with interior designers can lead to the creation of homes that include the best of both worlds. Debbie Baxter expresses this best when she says, “Any great interior allows for the various experts to come together and create as a team; the result is divine!” While it is likely that there will always be dissenting ideas, I hope that this trend of cooperation grows so that more homes can be practical in usability and beautiful to look at. Covering large pieces, such as television, can be done with the use of motorized lifts that allow them to pop up from custom furniture or even drop down from the ceiling. Also, they can be covered with large scale pieces of art that lift away when in use.

Academic Accomplishments Academic All District 2011 What college you plan to attend? United States Naval Academy Why did you choose this college? I was recruited by several universities, but wanted to be in the United States Marine Corp. since I was very young. The Naval Academy has excellent academics and allows me the chance to become an Officer in the Marine Corp. Also I loved their athletic program, and the campus is beautiful. Despite being so far from home, I felt comfortable there. Goals for college? I plan to start as a defensive end for the Academy by my junior year. I also want to complete all four years so I can become a Lt. in the Marine Corp.

What other interests do you have? I’ve played the drums for 10 years and I enjoy creating music, its kind of my hobby. I love to play golf, and hang out with friends. What will you miss most about Boerne? Of course I will miss all of my friends and Boerne Champion H.S, but also the small town atmosphere that I grew up in. And, Dr. Pepper, they don’t sell it in Maryland. If you could meet one person dead or alive, who would it be and what would you ask them? Charlie Day (alive) and John Wayne (dead). I would ask John Wayne for a hug. And Charlie Day if I could be in an episode of his show Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia. The Porsche 911 Carerra S Cabriolet

With summer in full swing, what an opportunity to drop the top on this beautiful Porsche 911 Carrera S Cabriolet and enjoy the Hill Country! This brand new model for 2012 drives as good as it looks, and brings some changes to one of the most famous lines Porsche has ever released. Longer, lower, wider, faster, more fuel efficient, and if you can believe it, lighter, the 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S Cabriolet is the latest offering from Porsche and is simply better than ever. 911 Design Director, Michael Mauer, has often said that the 911 is the source for all Porsche brand styling, and it’s quite obvious. While the model has undergone many variations over the years, the 911 is the model that is most easily recognizable as being THE Porsche. This latest incarnation has much of the styling that has made it famous, but the differences live in the details. The roof has a slightly different line and new front fender humps, which feature new domed headlamps that give the car a lower, wider, more menacing stance are a couple of the additions. The Carrera S Cabriolet also features red-dagger taillamps that are positioned under a furrowed brow that Mauer says will eventually migrate to all Porsches. Under the hood, the S model features a 400hp 3.8L engine, and includes a stop/start system that buyers can disable if they want to save up to 1.5 mpg. Although the point at which peak torque becomes available rises in both the 3.4 and 3.8L by 1200 rpm, to 5600, the 3.8L that we test drove behaves about the same as before in both performance and sound. The latter, incidentally, is augmented by a new “Sound Symposer” somewhat similar to the sound tube used in the current BMW Z4. An acoustic tube runs from the intake pipe to the rear parcel shelf and has a simple membrane in it that vibrates in concert with intake pulses. The membrane merely amplifies these pulses for the cabin, and a valve in the intake activates the Symposer when you push the standard Sport button. It does indeed wake up the engine’s voice, while the new Carrera’s improved sound insulation more effectively dampens road noise. The Carerra S Cabriolet features a smooth, precise rack that delivers a responsive helm and a wonderful connection to the road. This newest model is far more comfortable than previous models and transit quickly, more securely, and with less of the teethgritting tail twitching than you might have experienced previously. The 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S Cabriolet is a true sports car that Porschephiles will soon regard as one of the finest 911s to come off the assembly line.

Congratulations to Craig Desmond who has recently become the CEO at the Southwest General Hospital. As CEO Desmond, a long-term Cordillera Ranch resident/Clubs member, will oversee the full-service medical center located in south central San Antonio – conveniently located just north of the Eagle Ford Shale. After serving a six year tenure as CEO of the Texan Heart Hospital, Desmond is more than qualified for his newest undertaking. Not only was this move a substantial one in Desmond’s career, but it also allows him to spread his expertise and extensive knowledge to the #5 San Antonio hospital in 2012, with 259 beds and whose emergency room saw roughly 43,000 visits alone. It looks like Desmond will have his hands full, and we couldn’t be happier for him! Congratulations again, Craig!

The Cordillera Ranch champions will be forever immortalized in these limestone tributes through Blazing Lazer Art and Engraving’s etching technique that both sand blasts and uses lithograph paint to adhere their names onto these boulders. “It is one of a kind,” said Mark Semm, The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch Director of Agronomy. Mark’s experience at Augusta National and Vaquero gave him great perspective on other champions galleries around the country which was helpful in the planning and installation of the new gallery. “The name Nicklaus is synonymous with championships, so when we set out to develop a gallery for our members’ tournament wins we wanted to connect it with Mr. Nicklaus and the Nicklaus Signature Course at Cordillera Ranch,” according to Marc DeWall, Cordillera Ranch Director of Golf.
