Well, we’re officially in the middle of summer in the Texas Hill Country. However, unlike summers of recent memory, this one feels a little different. Yes, it’s still hot, and yes, we’ll still complain about it being hot, but given the excellent rainfall we’ve had the last few months, the summer stress feels well … less.
Compared to the last few versions of this season, where grass was parched and rivers were slow, this year is bringing a much different vibe. Now, with rivers flowing, lakes filling up and aquifers charging, it seems like the Hill Country is inviting us back outside again.
Whether it’s a lazy float on the Guadalupe or simply enjoying the golden hour (beverage of choice in hand!) on a patio with friends, this is the kind of summer we’ve been hoping for and one that reminds us of great memories of summers past. Frankly, we’re due!
It’s also a great reminder of why we call this place home. A reminder that slows time down just enough to appreciate the simple things, while still offering plenty of ways to stay active. A reminder that summers are made for backyard fun, and that we have THE best backyard in the world.
As you flip through this issue of CR Living, I hope you find inspiration to make the most of the season. And, if you need a little help, “A Day in the Life” on page 20 should help you get started.

WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND AND HOW WILL THAT BE AN ASSET TO CORDILLERA
My background is mostly in communications, branding and client-facing roles. Before this, I worked in corporate banking where I planned events, created a lot of branded materials, and worked closely with different teams and senior leaders. I also ran my own freelance design business and co-founded a small startup, so I’ve done a bit of everything — from building brands to handling partnerships and just figuring things out as I go.
I think what helps me here is that I’m used to wearing multiple hats and staying organized when things get busy. I’m comfortable talking to people, keeping projects moving, and making sure the details are right. At Cordillera, I get to use those same skills in a more personal, relationship-focused way, which I really like.
I really like how personal it feels. A lot of my previous jobs were in bigger corporate settings, so it’s nice to be somewhere that still feels community-oriented. I enjoy getting to meet people who are excited about the Ranch and helping make their experience a good one.
My favorite part is probably the variety. Some days I’m helping with marketing or social media, other days I’m greeting people at the Visitors Center or coordinating something for the sales team. It keeps things interesting, and I like that I get to be involved in different parts of what makes Cordillera special.
Learning how to manage a lot of moving parts without dropping the ball — or burning myself out. At my previous job, I was juggling big events, design work and communications all at once. I had to get really good at prioritizing, staying organized, and knowing when to ask for help. It taught me a lot about balance and trusting other people to carry some of the load.
I’m motivated by wanting to build a good life for my family and be someone my child can look up to. I like knowing that the work I do helps create stability and opportunities for the people I love most. At the same time, I’m also motivated by seeing something actually come together and make a difference for someone else. Whether it’s helping a client feel taken care of, creating something that looks good and works well, or just knowing I made someone’s day a little smoother — that’s what keeps me going. I like feeling useful and knowing the work I put in matters.
My favorite age so far has to be right now. I’m in this really full chapter where I get to be a mom, start a new job I’m excited about, and build a life in a place we love. It’s not always easy balancing everything, but it feels meaningful. I like who I’m becoming and how everything is coming together — the little everyday moments with my family, new adventures and the sense that we’re exactly where we’re supposed to be.
I spend most of my free time getting out with my family and our dogs. We like going on family walks, and I really enjoy slowing down to soak in those little moments with them. I’m a big TCU fan (and alum!), so I love catching football games when I can. When I get the chance, I like going skiing in the mountains or heading to the river. I’m also always up for bigger adventures — I love to travel and see the world. Some of my favorite trips so far have been the Catalina Wine Mixer on Catalina Island and the Christmas markets in Germany, France and Switzerland. I like trying new things and keeping life interesting.
If I could time travel, I think I’d go back to simpler times — either a random summer as a kid in Amarillo or my college years at TCU. I wouldn’t change anything, but there’s something really special about being able to look back with the perspective I have now. I’m so grateful for how everything has unfolded and led me to where I am today. It’s funny how life always seems to work out, even when you can’t see it in the moment.
My mom has always been a big hero of mine. She’s incredibly strong and has this quiet way of showing up for people without making a big deal about it. I’ve learned a lot from watching how she handles things with grace and humor. She has taught me how to lead with both confidence and kindness. Now that I’m a mom myself, I have a whole new appreciation for everything she did — and still does. It’s made me want to carry forward that same steady, loving presence with my own child.
I don’t really have one single favorite cuisine because I love trying new foods. I’m the “I’ll try anything once” person, especially when I’m traveling. That said, if I had to pick just one type of place for the rest of my life, I’d go with Chick-fil-A. I know it sounds simple, but there’s something about a good chicken sandwich and waffle fries that never gets old!

Long before they moved to Cordillera Ranch, Dennis and Karen had something important in common: a heart for service and a genuine desire to make a difference in the lives of others.
Throughout successful careers, both made a habit of raising their hands when something needed to be done. Dennis spent decades building companies, leading teams and solving complex challenges around the world, all while remaining actively involved in church, professional organizations and the communities where he lived. Karen built a reputation as a leader, mentor and community advocate, serving on numerous boards and nonprofit organizations while helping women entrepreneurs find their footing in business.
"A professor once told me, 'You can't make a difference,’ but I disagreed with him then, and I've spent my life trying to prove him wrong," recalled Dennis.
Karen agreed, adding, “I've always believed that if you've been blessed with certain skills and experiences, you should use them to help make your community better.”
Today, that same spirit of service continues to shape their lives in Cordillera Ranch. Whether Karen is serving on the board of The Center in Boerne, helping facilitate Meals on Wheels (see Cordillera Ranch Living Magazine, July/August 2021), or mentoring others through various community organizations, and whether Dennis is leading the Cordillera Ranch Men's Group and Bible studies or bringing people together through shared activities, both believe a meaningful life is built through relationships and involvement. In many ways, that shared philosophy is one of the reasons their marriage has worked so well for nearly three decades.
married on May 9, 1998, and recently celebrated their 28th anniversary. Now, Dennis and Karen live a happy life together in their Cordillera Ranch home, but their journey to this point was decades in the making.
Dennis grew up in Warren, Michigan, just outside Detroit. A talented athlete, he earned a basketball scholarship to Trinity University during the school's Division I era. He still remembers arriving in San Antonio for his recruiting visit. "It was sunny and 85 degrees. I thought, 'Why would I stay in Michigan when I could have this?’” he said.
After earning his engineering degree, Dennis embarked on a career in the power generation industry that would take him around the world. He worked for General Electric before launching his own turbine services company and later participated in power development projects in countries including China, Turkey, Nigeria and the Czech Republic. Along the way, he earned six patents and built a reputation as an innovator within his field.
The couple first met through Great Expectations in the mid1990s — a popular dating service long before online dating became the norm. At the time, Karen was living and working in Dallas and had won a membership through a networking event. Dennis, who had recently gone through a divorce, had joined on the recommendation of a high school friend who happened to own several of the franchise locations. While browsing through a book of K's, Dennis spotted Karen's profile and video. "I thought this is somebody I'd like to meet," he shared. “Normally you’d get a phone number but Karen sent me her beeper number!”
Karen eventually agreed to dinner after one of Dennis' church basketball games. She still remembers his outfit — a black cashmere sport jacket (aka “the babe magnet”) paired with blue jeans. Dennis remembers the conversation.
"I could usually get women to talk a lot more on a first date," he laughed. “But Karen interrogated me."
The first date led to a second, then a third, and before long the couple realized they had found something special. They
Karen's professional path is equally impressive. After a fashion merchandising degree, she worked as a buyer for the Allied Department Store, Titches, in Dallas. She transitioned to work for a U.S. congressman and a Texas state senator. Her talent for marketing and relationship building eventually led her to PKF Texas in Houston, where she became the only non-CPA shareholder and helped develop one of the firm's most successful marketing programs.
During her tenure, Karen and her team earned more than 150 marketing awards. She was also recognized as Houston Business Journal's Chief Marketing Officer of the Year in 2017. Beyond her professional accomplishments, she devoted countless hours to nonprofit organizations, women's leadership initiatives and community service projects throughout Houston.
Looking back, it’s easy to see that neither Karen nor Dennis were content to sit on the sidelines. They brought that same spirit of involvement with them to the Texas Hill Country. The couple purchased their Cordillera Ranch lot in 2003, long before they ever began building a home.
"The golf course wasn't even here yet," noted Dennis. "We bought our lot on Muirfield the very first day it was offered."
They were drawn by the beauty of the Hill Country and envisioned one day retiring there. Like many carefully laid plans, however, life intervened. Family responsibilities, careers and other priorities delayed construction year after year. What they originally thought might be a relatively short wait ultimately stretched to nearly 16 years.

Finally, in 2018, construction began on the home they had envisioned for so long. The home later earned a Summit Award for interior design, but as proud as they are of the finished result, the couple concurs that the best part of moving to Cordillera Ranch wasn’t the architecture. It was all about the people.
"We knew it would be a beautiful place to live. What we didn't realize was how incredible the community would be," shared Karen, although her service has clearly contributed to a stronger and more united community. For Karen, becoming part of a community requires more than just presence. She believes that to truly belong to a community, you have to immerse yourself in it and take part in the meaningful work of giving back. This commitment began long before she moved here.
Even while still living in Houston, she was nominated by Cordillera residents to participate in San Antonio's Master Leadership Program. Through that experience, she developed relationships throughout the region and gained a deeper understanding of the people and organizations that make the Hill Country unique. One opportunity led to another, and Karen became involved with Impact San Antonio, 100 Women of the Hill Country, Leadership Boerne and numerous other civic and charitable organizations.
Dennis, too, continues to stay active professionally through consulting work — trying to keep aging power plants operating during power-demand growth caused by AI. But much of his energy is focused closer to home — earlier this year, he assumed leadership of the aforementioned Cordillera Ranch Men's Group — a role many fellow residents encouraged him to pursue after years of involvement. Before stepping into the position, Dennis
spent countless gatherings getting to know the men who attended. Those relationships ultimately made the transition feel natural. "It's been a real joy," he affirmed. "All we're trying to do is contribute and be of value to the community."
For Dennis and Karen, their sense of unity is rooted in their shared commitment to Bible study. Together, they also lead a couples’ Bible study that has become one of the most rewarding parts of their lives. What began as a small gathering has grown into a group of more than 20 people, creating lasting friendships and a strong support network for everyone involved. “Carla Northington introduced me to the Trinity Presbyterian Woman’s Rafiki Bible study that meets to focus on God’s word in a semester-type arrangement. This ongoing study of different books of the Bible has been a source of learning more about God, his word and meeting those of like minds. We also are honored to be a part of the Bridge Fellowship that meets at Herff Elementary School on Sundays,” said Karen. This shared faith has played an important role throughout their marriage. "When we discovered that we both loved Jesus Christ, that became a very important foundation for us," explained Karen. "That's the focal point of our life together,” added Dennis.
Of course, life in Cordillera Ranch isn't all meetings and volunteer work. The couple also enjoys traveling whenever possible and has explored destinations throughout Europe and beyond. Last December, they embarked on a Danube River Christmas Market cruise that took them from Budapest to Prague, complete with festive villages, holiday lights and plenty of unforgettable memories. "It was magical," Karen said. "A trip of a lifetime." On another trip to Italy in 2023, the couple, by chance, met a group from Cordillera, marking one of many serendipitous encounters from life on the Ranch.
Dennis also discovered another Michigander at Cordillera that was from his locality of Warren — Alex Preston. Karen discovered that Sheri Preston, his wife, went to the same high school — Richardson High! “The stories of connectivity to others here
in Cordillera are numerous and providential,” shared Karen.
Although many adventures have been shared with friends they've met and reconnected with through Cordillera Ranch, family remains at the center of their lives. Dennis' son and his family live in Dallas, along with the couple's two beloved grandchildren, William and Eleanor. Recently, Eleanor called with a simple request. "She said, 'I want to come to your house.' How could you not love that?" smiled Karen.
Then there's Allie, the family's rescue dog and unofficial greeter. Part lab, part poodle and perhaps a few other breeds mixed in for good measure, Allie has become a beloved fixture around the house. Every morning, she proudly trots down the driveway to retrieve the newspaper before returning home as though she's completed an important assignment. “She’s so good. And she seems to have human eyes," said Dennis.
Both Dennis and Karen also place a strong emphasis on health and wellness. Even after more than 21 years as Club members, Dennis still enjoys golf and Club activities, while Karen stays active in Pilates, walking and strength training. Their active lifestyle helps fuel everything else they enjoy, from travel and volunteering to spending time with family and friends.
Looking back, it's easy to see why Cordillera Ranch has been such a natural fit. Over the years, Dennis and Karen have built lasting friendships, deepened their faith, and found countless opportunities to contribute their time and talents. In return, they have discovered exactly what they'd hoped to find when they purchased their lot more than two decades ago: a place where meaningful connections flourish and neighbors become friends.
“God has truly blessed us by living out here in Cordillera Ranch. It has some of the best people in world that live here, a great golf course and fantastic amenities in this idyllic setting. The additional bonus is being of service to our church, our community and neighbors, and trying to make a difference to everything we’re involved with,” said Dennis.
As Karen puts it, "Our lives are fuller because of the people we are surrounded by."

Championship Season at Cordillera Ranch got off to a fantastic start, with the Men's Club Championship in May, the Ladies Club Championship in early June, and the Junior Club Championship rounding out an exciting stretch on the golf calendar. Across all three events, members of all ages showcased the competitive spirit, sportsmanship and camaraderie that make championship golf at Cordillera Ranch so special.
The 2026 Men's Club Championship, held May 16-17, brought together a strong field of competitors for a true test of golf. Challenging conditions, including gusty winds and intermittent rain, set the stage for an exciting championship weekend.
When the final putt dropped, Ron Trevino stood atop the leaderboard, capturing his second Men's Club Championship and first since 2016. With the victory, Ron became just the third player in Club history to win multiple Men's Club Championships.
In the First Flight, Brian Werner posted an impressive two-day net score of 4-under par to claim the title. Lee Pettigrew and Ron Haney rounded out the top three with strong performances of their own.
The Second Flight delivered plenty of drama, with several players in contention until the closing holes. Brett Dines ultimately emerged victorious by a single stroke over Jason West, Mark Greco and Richard Jackson, while a scorecard playoff was needed to determine second and third place.
Congratulations to Ron and all this year's competitors for making the championship another memorable Club Championship.
On June 3-4, 11 ladies teed it up in the 2026 Ladies’ Club Championship, all competing for the opportunity to have their name etched into The Rock in Champions Gallery.
Julia Hansen earned that honor with a stellar performance over 36 holes, finishing at even-par 144. Her championship was highlighted by a final-round 1-under-par 71 — the first under-par round of her golfing career and a round she is sure to remember for years to come!
In the Senior Ladies Division, Susie Long captured the title with steady play throughout the championship.
The Net Divisions featured outstanding performances as well, with Nancy Meadows winning the Ladies Net Club Championship and Barbara Wynn earning the Net Senior Ladies Club Championship.
Congratulations to Julia, Susie, Nancy, Barbara and all the competitors who helped make this year's championship a success!
The 2026 Junior Club Championship concluded another exciting championship season at Cordillera Ranch, with our junior golfers showcasing impressive skill, sportsmanship and competitive spirit across all three divisions.
In the 14 & Over Championship Division, Marco Baima captured the title of 2026 Junior Club Champion after two outstanding rounds of golf, finishing at -3 after 36 holes. Marco was able to come out of the gate strong both days, shooting -6 on the front nine for the weekend. With the victory, Marco earned the right to have his name etched into The Rock in the Champions Gallery, joining a distinguished group of champions who have left their mark on the Club's history!
The 10-13 Division also featured outstanding play, with Hayden Price emerging as champion after a strong two-day performance and a solid finish down the final four holes, including a birdie on hole #15. Way to go, Hayden!
In the 9 & Under Division, Brexton Nichols claimed the championship and demonstrated a bright future ahead in the game, highlighted by an impressive eagle on hole #3. Congrats, Brexton!
This year's championship served as another reminder of just how strong the Cordillera Ranch Junior Golf Program has become. The talent, enthusiasm and dedication displayed throughout the event were evident in every group, and the level of competition continues to improve each year. With so many talented young golfers developing their games, the future of junior golf at Cordillera Ranch is incredibly bright. Congratulations to Marco, Hayden, Brexton and all of the juniors who competed in this year's championship!
As we reflect on another successful championship season, we congratulate all of our champions and thank every member who participated. The tradition, competition and camaraderie displayed throughout these events continue to make golf at Cordillera Ranch one of the most special experiences in Texas.

At Cordillera Ranch, junior golf is about much more than learning how to swing a club. It is about building confidence, developing character, fostering friendships, and creating a lifelong love for the game. Through a progressive pathway of programs designed for every age and skill level, young golfers have the opportunity to learn, compete, and grow within a supportive and engaging environment.
For our youngest golfers, ages 4 to 6, Lil' Linkstars provides the perfect introduction to the game. Meeting on Thursday evenings, this program is designed for beginner to intermediate players and focuses on making golf fun while developing fundamental skills.
Throughout the semester, participants receive instruction in all areas of the game, including full swing, putting and green reading, chipping, pitching and bunker play. Instruction is tailored to each player's skill level, ensuring that every child enjoys a positive and rewarding experience.
To add excitement and encourage growth, Lil' Linkstars participants compete in two three-hole challenges during the semester, giving them an opportunity to apply what they have learned in a fun and supportive setting. Thursdays, September 3-October 22, 2026

As golfers grow, they can advance into Linkstars, our after-school program for juniors ages 6 to 14. Designed for beginner to intermediate players, Linkstars provides a structured environment where students continue to build a strong foundation while developing greater confidence on the golf course.
Players may choose either Tuesday or Wednesday evening sessions and receive coaching that is customized to their individual abilities. The curriculum covers every aspect of the game, including full swing, putting, green reading, chipping, pitching and bunker play.
A highlight of the program is the opportunity to participate in two nine-hole challenges throughout the semester. These events allow juniors to experience on-course competition while learning valuable lessons in sportsmanship, course management and personal growth.
By combining instruction with friendly competition, Linkstars helps young golfers develop the skills and mindset necessary for future success.

For dedicated junior golfers seeking a more competitive experience, Team Cordillera offers the next stage in player development. Team members participate in weekly Saturday morning practices and represent Cordillera Ranch in multiple interclub matches throughout the fall season. The program introduces juniors to competitive golf while fostering camaraderie, teamwork and a commitment to improvement.
Selection for Team Cordillera takes place through a qualifying process during the summer. Players submit scores from the front nine teal tees, allowing the coaching staff to evaluate performance and determine team placement. This process rewards dedication and encourages players to challenge themselves as they pursue their goals.

We are pleased to announce the appointment of David Edgar as our new Director of Racquet Sports at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch. David joins us with an exceptional background, having worked at some of the finest racquet facilities, both in the U.S. and abroad. Most recently, he served at The Dominion Country Club beginning in 2022. His career started in 2003 at nearby Fair Oaks Ranch Country Club, and his passion for both tennis and travel eventually led him to Peter Burwash International (PBI). Through PBI, he coached at premier destinations including Turtle Bay Resort in Hawaii, The American Club and Laguna National Golf & Country Club in Singapore.
As David recalls, his PBI journey began with a bit of suspense. He and four other coaches waited eagerly to learn which of 30 countries they’d be assigned to. The others got Dubai, Thailand and Mexico — not a bad gig. “I got Hawaii and felt like I won the lottery,” he laughed.
Hawaii wasn’t the only memorable stop. His time with PBI later took him to Singapore, where a chance introduction changed his life. “When I moved to Singapore, Novi was my upstairs neighbor’s best friend. I invited them over for Mexican food (which I made myself) on the 4th of July. They probably weren’t familiar with the holiday nor the food,” he joked. But it worked out — David and Novi were a perfect match. Today, they have a 7-year-old son, Nathan, and returned to Texas in 2022 to be closer to family.
Originally from McAllen, David grew up in Corpus Christi and later San Antonio. His love for tennis began early. “My love for the game took off in my elementary school years in Corpus Christi. My mom was the athletic director at Corpus Christi Athletic Club, and so I spent many hours on the courts there. I later played at Marshall High School in San Antonio.”
As for his early tennis heroes, he admired Pete Sampras (but not until later), Andre Agassi and Jim Courier — but
when asked who he’d choose as a doubles partner, he didn’t hesitate: “Roger Federer, no question.”
Throughout his career, David has earned a reputation as a well-rounded racquet professional, accomplished instructor and thoughtful program developer. His coaching philosophy — Fun, Fitness and Knowledge — has guided him from the start. “At the core, it hasn't changed, but I do get the opportunity to shape it in creative ways,” he said.
That philosophy carries naturally into pickleball, a sport he’s excited to see growing. “My background is in tennis, like most pickleball players. I enjoy the challenges and skill sets needed to be successful in pickleball. It’s certainly easier starting out, which is great for getting newer players. Transitioning from tennis isn’t difficult — the need for balance, footwork and good preparation is all the same. You simply adjust.”
What David enjoys most, though, is the community. “I’d say what I most enjoy about coaching in a club setting is the feeling of home. It's a gathering place for all of us to see each other, have a chat and a sweat.”
Looking ahead, he’s eager to see increased activity across both tennis and pickleball. He believes Cordillera Ranch
is the perfect setting for competitive and social play alike. David shared, “I am grateful for the opportunities I’ve had throughout my career and proud of what we’ve accomplished along the way. I am very excited to join the Cordillera Ranch family and look forward to building upon the exceptional member experience that makes this Club so special. We will work hard to create a tennis program that offers something for players of all levels while continuing to grow the game of pickleball.”

One thing we have always believed in this business is that you have to be willing to listen.
That is why the feedback cards have become an important part of how we look at our food and beverage operation. They give us a direct look at what members are experiencing. The good, the bad and sometimes the small details that may not seem big on their own but matter over time.
They are not just something we collect and put away. We read them. We log them. We talk through them. We share the right feedback with the team, and we use it to keep getting better.
Over the past several months, one thing has stood out to me. Members are not just commenting on food or service in general. They are naming people.
That matters.
When a member takes the time to mention Sam, Jasmine, Brooklyn, Becca, Annie or any team member by name, it tells us something important. It tells us the interaction felt personal. It tells us someone made the experience better. Maybe it was a warm welcome, a welltimed check-in, a remembered preference, a confident recommendation or simply the right attitude at the right moment.
A lot of good hospitality happens in those small moments. One of our core principles is to be the friendliest and most engaging Club in the world. That is a big standard, and it does not happen because we say it. It happens when members feel it. It happens when a team member makes eye contact, starts a real conversation, remembers a detail, follows through, and makes someone feel genuinely welcome.
That is why those named comments matter so much. They show us where that standard is coming to life. Those comments also give us a chance to recognize our team the right way. They help newer team members understand what good service looks like here at Cordillera Ranch. It is one thing for a manager to talk about standards. It is another thing for a member to take the time to say, “That person took great care of us.”
That kind of feedback carries weight.
The constructive comments are just as valuable. If timing was off, we need to know. If a dish missed the mark, we need to know. If communication was not clear, or something felt harder than it should have, we need to know.
We may not make a major change from one single comment, and that is intentional. But we do look for patterns. If we hear the same thing more than once, we are going to talk about it. We review it with our managers, look at what happened, and decide where we need to tighten up.
That could mean looking closer at service pacing, menu communication, food consistency, reservation flow, check presentation, dietary accommodations, lighting, menu readability or even member-favorite dishes that people miss seeing on the menu. Some of those may seem like small details. In a club environment, they are not small. They are part of how the experience feels.
The same goes for compliments.
If someone took great care of you, tell us who it was and what they did. That gives us a chance to recognize them, coach from that example, and continue building the kind of service culture our members expect.
At the Club, food and beverage is a big part of many members here. It is dinner with family, a drink after golf, lunch with friends, a birthday, a member event or a quiet evening on the patio. Those moments matter because they are personal. Our job is to make sure they feel handled with care.
The most helpful feedback is specific.
If service felt slow, tell us where, when and what part of the experience felt slow. Was it the greeting? Drinks? Food timing? Check presentation? Those details help us fix the right issue instead of guessing.
We are proud of the progress we are seeing.
Food quality, timing, warmth and professionalism are all areas where members have been giving us encouraging feedback. That does not mean we are finished. It means the work is moving in the right direction, and we need to keep going.
There will always be areas to improve.
That is the nature of this business, and it is part of the responsibility. The standard does not stay still. Member expectations do not stay still. The Club continues to grow, and we have to keep growing with it.
So please keep sharing your feedback with us. The compliments help us recognize the team. The constructive notes help us improve. The details help us see the experience from your side of the table.
We appreciate it, and we are using it.

The historic Cedar Knoll Vineyard in Napa Valley (now known as Palmaz Vineyards) is owned and operated by Dr. Julio Palmaz and his wife Amalia. Their children, Christian Gastón Palmaz and Florencia Palmaz, are also actively involved in running the estate.
The original owner was a pioneer and vintner named Henry Hagen who founded the original Cedar Knoll in 1881. After falling into disrepair post-Prohibition, the 600-acre estate was purchased and restored by the Palmaz Family.
The Palmaz winery is one of the top 10 travel destinations when going to Napa. You will drive up a long driveway, which leads you into the building. They will take you to the top and show you the tank rooms and all the equipment that goes into the makings of their meticulous wines. NASA would be the equivalent of just how stateof-the-art all the machinery is.
The winery is impeccably taken care of, and you will not see one speck of dust in the entire showroom. The winery is built into an 18-story cavern in the flank of Mount George, providing it with not only all the benefits of gravity-flow winemaking but also the natural temperature control of a cave. By eliminating mechanical pumps from the winemaking process, gravity-flow design minimizes the turbulence that damages wines’ molecular structure.
At the heart of the winery sits the fermentation dome, lined with 24 fermentation tanks that can accommodate grapes from individual vineyards across the estate. The sophisticated monitoring systems for each tank allow winery team members to project a broad range of data (including
thermal imaging) onto the ceiling of the dome.
Palmaz Vineyards' gravity-flow and gravity-finish subterranean winery, the Cave, is a remarkable feat of engineering, harmoniously fusing tradition and technology to produce world-class vintages.
We were so fortunate to have a portion of the Palmaz family join us for a special wine dinner on the Axis Covered Patio, shortly after the rebuild. The wines range from Riesling, Chardonnay and Cabernets.
We are excited to team up with the Palmaz family, and on the next Wine List we will be offering the Cedar Knoll Cabernet by the glass. These wines come from the original Cedar Knoll vineyards that are out in front of the winery. You will enjoy comforting flavors of vanilla, caramel and baked boysenberry that dance across the palate. The voluptuous fruit flavors are effortlessly balanced with elegant tannins that cover the tongue like a feather — spreading to every hidden taste bud in the deepest corners of the palate. This spring, a group of adventurous members from Cordillera Ranch traded everyday routines for wide-open skies, rugged trails and unforgettable memories during a spectacular getaway to Y.O. Ranch Headquarters. With seven members, ten horses and endless excitement ahead, the trip quickly became one for the books.
From the moment we arrived, it was clear this would be a special experience. Planning the trip had been seamless thanks to Lisa, whose warm personality and cheerful energy set the tone before we even unpacked. Whether answering questions, coordinating details, or greeting guests with a smile, she made everyone feel instantly at home.
After an easy drive from Cordillera Ranch, we settled into our accommodations while the horses relaxed in their spacious runs. But this was no ordinary horse retreat. The ranch’s incredible exotic animals immediately added an unexpected twist to the adventure. Our horses were introduced to a zebra affectionately named “Fred” and an emu dubbed “Edgar.” At first, the encounters were met with wide eyes and cautious curiosity, but before long both horses and riders settled into ranch life together, realizing these unusual neighbors were friendly additions to the experience rather than something to fear.
Evenings at Y.O. Ranch were filled with laughter and camaraderie. Guests gathered for pool, shuffleboard and lively games of Mexican Train dominoes before heading to dinner each night. Meals were exceptional from start to finish, with delicious options for everyone, including thoughtful vegetarian selections that impressed the entire group.
Although Friday’s forecast threatened heavy rainstorms, not even the weather could dampen the spirit of the weekend. Guests enjoyed a relaxed morning with breakfast, games and
cozy conversation before spending the afternoon at a delightful sip-and-paint session decorating clay pots. Kesley kept spirits high and glasses full, turning a rainy afternoon into one of the most memorable parts of the trip. Meanwhile, the horses enjoyed turnout in beautiful grassy paddocks where they could stretch, graze, and relax.
With more than 12,000 acres of breathtaking terrain waiting to be explored, anticipation built for the weekend’s trail rides. Saturday morning began with breakfast before everyone saddled up and headed out by 9:30am alongside guide Nicole, whose knowledge and enthusiasm made the ride even more enjoyable. Riders spent nearly two hours winding through the stunning Hill Country landscape, soaking in scenic vistas and reconnecting with nature from horseback.
The adventure continued after lunch with an unforgettable safari tour led by Kesley. Guests learned fascinating details about the ranch’s exotic wildlife while feeding giraffes and camels directly from their hands. Kesley’s passion for the animals was contagious, and her knowledge transformed the tour into an experience that was both educational and magical.
As if the day had not already been perfect, dinner was served early so everyone could saddle up once more for a sunset ride across the ranch. Golden light stretched across the rolling terrain as horses and riders made memories few would soon forget.
Sunday brought another incredible morning ride through a different section of the ranch, offering entirely new scenery and fresh adventures. Later in the day, the group visited the ranch museum, where history came alive through Texas Ranger artifacts, frontier memorabilia, longhorn bloodline exhibits and stories of the legendary Schreiner family dynasty. Jimmy ensured every guest was entertained and engaged, making sure there was never a dull moment throughout the weekend.

Whether your passion is horseback riding, wildlife encounters, birdwatching, hiking, pickleball or simply unplugging from everyday life, the ranch creates an atmosphere where guests can reconnect with nature, friends and family in a meaningful way.

The landscape of firearm ownership in Texas has shifted dramatically over the last few years. Many of our members have a passion for outdoor sports, personal safety, and enjoy community tranquility. Understanding changes in gun laws is more important than ever.
Between state-level legal overhauls and the current cultural climate, the choices surrounding how we carry and train have fundamentally evolved. The biggest point of confusion for many Texans is the difference between the traditional License to Carry (LTC) and the current state of Constitutional Carry (no permit).

1. The Carry Rule (Constitutional Carry)
Texas allows eligible adults to carry a handgun, either concealed or openly in a holster, without a permit. While this expanded firearm access across the state, it did not change where you can legally carry. In fact, open carriers face stricter boundaries and face steeper trespass penalties if they cross onto private property displaying a firearm where prohibited.
2. The Open Carry Evolution
When open carry was first popularized, the law required a very specific "belt or shoulder holster." Today, the law is simpler: a handgun carried openly must simply be in a holster, whether that is an appendix rig, a chest holster or a holstered bag. However, displaying a firearm in an aggressive manner "calculated to cause alarm" remains a criminal disorderly conduct charge.
3. Why the LTC Course Still Matters
With a permit no longer mandated by the state, why has interest in the LTC course remained incredibly high at Cordillera Ranch? Because an LTC provides vital advantages that open carry simply cannot match:
• Reciprocity: An LTC allows you to legally carry when traveling across more than 30 other states.
• Private Property: Private clubs use specific legal signs (30.05 for open carriers, vs. 30.06/30.07 for LTC holders). Having an LTC often grants you access to venues that bar the general public carrying without a license.
• No NICS Background Check: Showing a valid LTC allows you to bypass the FBI background check delay when purchasing a new firearm from an authorized dealer.
• The Critical Knowledge Base: The 4-to-6-hour state course doesn't just teach you how to shoot; it explicitly covers conflict resolution, civil liability and the strict legalities of nonlethal vs. deadly force.
How do these sweeping legal changes interact with life inside our 9,100-acre Hill Country community? It comes down to balancing individual rights with the shared peace of the community.
While Texas is highly permissive of firearm carry in public spaces, private property owners retain full legal authority to dictate their own rules. The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch operates under strict private club regulations.
Carrying open firearms while playing a round of golf, visiting the Clubhouse or dining is not permitted. This boundary ensures that all members, whether gun enthusiasts or not, feel entirely safe and relaxed.
The current social and political climate has naturally driven a surge of interest in personal defense. However, at Cordillera Ranch, the philosophy is that safety is rooted in proficiency, not just possession.
Our Gun Club provides a controlled, expert-led environment where members can transition from simply "owning a gun" to masterfully understanding it. Through the network of professional shooting instructors available at the Club, members don't just check the box on a state law, they actively practice situational awareness, weapon retention and safe storage practices necessary to protect their families.

This year marked an exciting new chapter for junior golf at Cordillera Ranch with the launch of Team Cordillera — an advanced junior program created for young golfers who are competing and aspiring to take their game to the next level. Designed as an extension of the Club’s established junior golf initiative, Linkstars, the program provides players with the opportunity to experience competitive golf in a structured, team-oriented environment.
Throughout January, junior golfers participated in qualifying rounds to earn a place on the inaugural spring roster. Those selected began weekly Saturday practices while also representing Cordillera Ranch in inter-club matches at premier courses throughout the area. From the very beginning, the enthusiasm surrounding the program was evident, with players and families embracing both the competitive and developmental aspects of the experience.
Team Cordillera was created with a vision rooted in personal experience and inspired by the powerful role team golf can play in a junior player’s development. While golf is traditionally viewed as an individual sport, the team environment introduces an entirely different dynamic — one that motivates players, builds confidence, and teaches invaluable life lessons. For many young golfers, it also serves as a stepping-stone toward future opportunities in high school, and for those who aspire beyond that, collegiate golf.
Perhaps the most rewarding aspect of the program so far has been watching the players build friendships, encourage one another, and take pride in representing their Club together. The camaraderie developed through practices and matches has created an environment where players are pushing each other to improve, while genuinely enjoying the experience along the way. Seeing the excitement surrounding practices, team events and competition has reinforced exactly why the program was created.
As the team continues practicing throughout the summer, preparations are already underway for the fall season. Qualifying for the fall roster will take place throughout June, July and August, with fall practices and matches resuming in September. To qualify, juniors must submit a 9-hole scorecard from the teal tee box signed and attested by an adult golf member. The lowest scores submitted will be considered for the team. The coaching staff looks forward to continuing to grow the program while creating opportunities for junior golfers to compete, develop, and create lasting memories through the game.
The launch of Team Cordillera represents far more than a new competitive program — it reflects a continued commitment to developing not only better golfers, but confident teammates and young leaders as well.

Cordillera Ranch vs. Dominion Country Club (Away)
Team Cordillera opened its inaugural season in impressive fashion with a victory on the road at Dominion Country Club on March 21.
Leading the way in the Tiger Division were Carson Crites and Gardner Hall, who fired an outstanding one-under-par 35 to claim first place. In the Scottie Scheffler Division, Carson Gulley and Ryan Hale matched the performance with another stellar one-under-par 35 to secure their division title.
Additional strong performances helped seal the overall victory for Cordillera Ranch. Tuk Langford, Gage Morris and Benjamin Sprencel posted a solid 38 to earn second place, while Merit Snow and Tessa Gonzalez contributed valuable points with a determined round of 51.
The season-opening victory set the tone for what would become a remarkable spring campaign.
Cordillera Ranch vs. Dominion Country Club (Home)
Following a successful debut on the road, Team Cordillera returned home on May 2 and once again showcased the depth and competitiveness of the program.
Gardner Hall and Carson Crites continued their exceptional play, capturing the Silver Division title with an impressive score of 39. The Teal Division featured particularly strong competition, with the winning team posting a score of 40. Gage Morris, Tuk Langford and Benjamin Sprencel delivered another excellent performance, narrowly missing the top spot after carding a 44. Carson Gulley and Tessa Gonzalez followed closely behind with a solid 45 to earn a third-place finish.
The home match further demonstrated the team’s consistency, growth and competitive spirit throughout the season.
Cordillera Ranch vs. The Club at Sonterra (Away)
Team Cordillera closed out an exceptional spring season on May 9 with a final road match at The Club at Sonterra.
Carson Crites and Gardner Hall capped off a flawless season in style, finishing tied for first after an even-par performance. Benjamin and Christian Sprencel paired together for the first time and immediately found success, posting an outstanding 39 to earn a tie for second place. Rounding out the day, Carson Gulley and Tuk Langford delivered another steady performance with a 43 to finish fifth in a competitive field.
As the inaugural spring season came to a close, the success of Team Cordillera was evident not only in the scores, but also in the enthusiasm, teamwork and friendships developed along the way. The players embraced the team environment, supported one another throughout the season, and proudly represented Cordillera Ranch both at home and on the road.
With fall qualifying underway this summer, and competition resuming in September, the future of junior golf at Cordillera Ranch looks exceptionally bright.

On Sunday, April 26, the Cordillera Cares team had the privilege of welcoming Kinetic Kids and their families to The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch for a special afternoon of golf instruction and fun.
More than 10 children and their families joined us at the Practice Park, where they enjoyed a one-hour golf clinic led by their trained Golf Instructor. Participants had the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of the game while practicing both chipping and driving from the back dock of the Practice Park.
The smiles, laughter and excitement throughout the afternoon were a wonderful reminder of the impact that inclusive recreational opportunities can have on families. It was truly a joy to share our Club and the game of golf with these incredible children. The families expressed how much they enjoyed the experience, and our team was honored to help create lasting memories for everyone involved.
As part of our ongoing commitment to giving back through Cordillera Cares, we are excited to announce our next partnership event with Kinetic Kids.

Courts and will feature crafts, games, pickleball activities and plenty of opportunities for families to connect and enjoy time together. One of the evening's highlights will be a visit from a snow cone truck, which is sure to be a favorite among the kids!
Members of the Cordillera Cares team will be on hand throughout the event to help with setup, activities, games and cleanup, ensuring a memorable experience for all who attend.

Taught at Champion High School but open to students across both Boerne ISD high schools, is a unique program reshaping how teenagers think about business, creativity and themselves. The Entrepreneurship Pathway isn’t just another elective sequence. It’s a hands-on, mentor-supported platform where students learn to build real products, pitch real ideas, and develop the confidence to navigate real-world challenges.
Called Incubator.edu, the program began in the 2020-2021 school year under the direction of Jenny Breuer, whose commitment and genuine passion led to the success of the program and the students she inspired. “This program got off the ground because of Jenny’s genius and perseverance. So many kids (and mentors!) have benefited because of her dedication,” noted Sharon Ramey, a mentor for the program. “I love that Jenny starts with ‘find a problem’ ... then moves onto ‘find a solution for that problem’ … then ‘could you create a business around solving that problem?’: i.e. ‘do others have that problem and would they be willing to pay you for a solution?’ Wow, what would this world be like if kids were taught that within every problem, there's a wonderful solution?” suggested Ramey.
Breuer retired at the end of this school year and passed the torch to Dalton Fraley who explained in detail how the program works. Unlike many specialized academic tracks, the business and entrepreneurship pathway requires no formal application. Any student with curiosity and initiative can join. In fact, many Boerne High students travel regularly for class, and transportation has never been a barrier. Participants move through four courses — Intro to Business, Entrepreneurship I, Entrepreneurship II and finally Business Practicum, a work/study experience that places students directly in the world they’re preparing to enter.
Students rarely enter the program with a polished business idea or the confidence to pitch it. Most arrive unsure of how to handle failure or how to speak with authority in front of a room. Those two skills become the program’s first priorities. “We want them to learn to fail fast and not treat it as the end of the world, and we want them to be able to walk into any room and command it,” said Fraley.
Alongside these foundational skills, they gain something many adults never do: the ability to build something from scratch and the insight to know when a recalibration is needed. “When you discover that your potential customers don't like your solution as
much as you thought they would, then you don't have to keep it — you can pivot, make changes or go in an entirely different direction,” explained Ramey.
The growth students experience is profound. They begin with a vague idea and end the year with a functioning prototype, real-world testing under their belt, and a polished 10-minute pitch delivered on stage. “Watching that transformation happen over the course of a school year is one of the most rewarding things about teaching this program. The growth is honestly hard to overstate,” Fraley shared.
To begin, teams are formed based on business interests, working styles, compatibility and shared vision. Fraley expanded, “We also ask them directly who they work well with and who they do not. Real business partnerships live or die on the people involved, so we take this part seriously.”
Students then brainstorm and refine their ideas to pitch to mentors on Mentor Match Day. From there, they compete for seed money, build prototypes, test them, gather feedback and keep refining until their final pitch and presentation. This isn’t theoretical learning. It’s the real entrepreneurial process, lived out over the course of a school year.
For Owen Labay, this year’s First Place winner at Pitch Night, his path was a little unconventional but not without lessons learned. Owen entered the program and was matched with mentor Sharon Ramey after the class was well underway, but he had a specific product already in mind and a desire to be a solo entrepreneur. “My idea was an injury prevention app called Preventify, designed specifically for tennis players. I was passionate about this project because I had experienced injuries myself, which led to lost opportunities and a frustrating rehabilitation process. Over time, through the Incubator class, I expanded the concept into a functioning app built around preventative training programs across multiple sports,” he explained. This included collaboration with experts across multiple disciplines, and months researching, testing and refining the app designed to equip athletes with sport-specific training plans, demonstration videos and adaptive programs that adjust based on their daily check-ins.
Ramey praised Owen’s determination, in the midst of being a competitive tennis player and an advanced student. “He would jump at any chance .... practicing and practicing until he felt confident. And I'm convinced that's what creates winners. He made it all the way to the top 11 Incubator contestants in the Nation!” she said.
“Ms. Ramey consistently pushed me out of my comfort zone, which made a real difference in my confidence. She taught me how to carry myself as a professional and as someone with integrity, while also giving me extensive feedback on my pitch and business. Beyond the Incubator class, she showed me the importance of kindness, professionalism and giving back to the community,” said Owen who also recognized Mr. Fraley equally for his support.
As for going solo, Owen said that from the experience he gained the skills to present himself effectively and problemsolve with confidence, but added,” I learned that building a successful company can never really be a solo effort. With the help of mentors, teachers, physical therapists, app developers and other professionals, I was able to take this idea further than I ever could have imagined. This experience taught me firsthand that it is okay to not have every answer, as long as you are willing to learn from the people around you.”
The experience also shifted the trajectory of his college goals. Owen said, “Before joining the program, I had some interest in becoming a physical therapist, but the Incubator showed me how much I actually enjoy entrepreneurship. The class gave me the confidence that this is something I can genuinely pursue as a career, and I plan to focus on business going forward.” He plans on using his $8,000 award to further develop Preventify.
Mentors are the heartbeat of the program. “The best mentors are the ones who genuinely want to invest in young people and can meet students where they are. Patience is huge because these are high schoolers working through real problems for the first time. Someone who has built something themselves and can speak honestly about the messy middle of that process tends to connect with students the most,” noted Fraley.
Students connect with mentors during Mentor Match Day at Das Greenhaus, an energetic, speeddating-style event where students pitch their ideas and mentors choose teams they feel inspired to support.
“Mentors can’t do the work for their teams. We can be available to guide and help them, but we can’t make them do well.
They have to really want to go beyond what’s expected to be successful. It’s the same in growing a real business. Entrepreneurship isn’t for everyone. It requires a lot of extra work. If students have the drive and work ethic to do well in the class and the competition, they will. If they don’t, they won’t,” said May McCarthy, a Cordillera Ranch resident who has mentored teams at the university level and young companies as an Angel Investor since the early 2000s. “About four years ago, my sister Sharon Ramey asked me to meet with her high school team to help them with financials and presentation skills. It was fun, so I continued to help in subsequent years,” McCarthy added, who began as a subject matter expert before assuming the role of mentor. McCarthy’s 2025 DOZE APPAREL team won the Incubator competition and received the fan favorite award at Texas A&M during the Texas High School Ideas Challenge.
To expand the program’s reach, more involvement from the business community is key. “There are a few different ways to do that depending on how much time you have. Team mentors work closely with one student team throughout the year. Team co-mentors support a team in a secondary role with a lighter time commitment. Coaches come in to work with the whole class or specific groups at key points in the year. And judges are needed for our pitch competitions,” Fraley explained.

On May 13, 2026, the Cordillera Ranch Property Owners Association (POA) held its Annual Meeting of the Members at Voss Middle School in Boerne. The evening drew a strong showing of property owners eager to hear updates on the Association's finances, active projects and the road ahead. Board President David Hill called the meeting to order alongside Vice President Charlie Hill, Director Mac Northington, and POA General Manager Kevin Koether.
Two valued community partners opened the evening with presentations on matters directly affecting life at Cordillera Ranch. Kendall County Commissioner Andra Wisian provided an update on roadwork and improvements along Highway 46 and the surrounding roads — investments that will benefit Ranch residents and the broader community alike.
Bergheim Volunteer Fire Department Chief Adam Hawkins addressed the continued growth in call volume the department has experienced as our region expands. He also shared the welcome news that Cordillera Ranch's ISO rating has improved — a development that can carry meaningful benefits for homeowners. The POA is grateful for the department's ongoing commitment to our community.
General Manager Kevin Koether presented the 2025 financials with encouraging results. The independent firm Armstrong, Vaughan and Associates — specialists in POA/HOA accounting who serve numerous San Antonio-area communities — conducted a full audit and found no irregularities. Only minor adjusting on journal entries were recommended, all of which were completed, resulting in a clean, unqualified opinion. The Association ended the fiscal year with a positive operating surplus and continues to maintain a healthy reserve fund, keeping the POA on solid financial footing heading into the year ahead.
The Architectural Review Committee (ARC) remains one of the busiest arms of the POA, meeting weekly to ensure
that new construction and property improvements uphold the design standards that define our community. In 2025, the ARC approved 31 new home starts and processed 233 ancillary submittals covering everything from pools and fences to landscaping and remodels. As of early May 2026, new home submittals were trending upward, with 43 homes either under construction or approved to begin and 35 more in the design review phase — a clear signal that Cordillera Ranch remains one of the most sought-after communities in the Hill Country.
The POA team has been active across multiple fronts this past year.
• Kreutzberg Entry Refresh — The Kreutzberg entry received a significant makeover blending aesthetics with sustainability. The irrigation system was upgraded for greater efficiency, droughttolerant Hill Country native plants were installed, turf grass was reduced, and river rock was added to combat erosion — all part of the POA's ongoing commitment to water conservation.
• Road Repairs — The POA initiated a competitive bidding process for road repairs in several neighborhoods, including Clubs Village, River Crossing, Sun River, Granadilla, Persimmon and Verde Point, with work ranging from crack sealing and seal coating to asphalt and base repairs. Areas of concern along Rio Cordillera are being evaluated by a geotechnical engineer. Updates will be posted to the POA website once a vendor and timeline are confirmed.
• Walking Trail Upgrades — A twophase trail enhancement is underway. Phase One will install GPS-verified mile
marker medallions every half mile along the Cordillera Trace and Rio Cordillera trails, with a downloadable Google Earth map to follow. Phase Two will add informational signage featuring native flora and fauna, with QR code links to expanded content on the POA website. The Cordillera Ranch Nature Club has generously contributed information and photography for the signage.
• Additional work completed includes underbrush clearing throughout the Ranch, drainage and sod improvements at the Cordillera Trace Mail Center, a camera upgrade to the Verkada system at all Mail Centers, and an increase in construction site inspections to twice per month to protect neighboring properties.
Upcoming projects include a native landscaping upgrade at the Joe Klar entry, a drought-tolerant refresh of the Highway 46 entry beds, and a stain and sealer application at the Rio Cordillera mail center. Each project reflects the POA's commitment to maintaining Cordillera Ranch as a community that residents are proud to call home.
