New police station design to be locked in

BY ALEX PURCELL

THE Cooroy community is invited to a second consultation to discuss the design of the replacement police facility for Cooroy. Local citizens are being asked to have their say on the design of the new $4 million police facility, which will replace the current split-level station on the corner of Maple and Gar-

net streets. Minister for Police Mark Ryan and Queensland Police Service Commissioner Katarina Carroll met with the community in July to discuss initial designs for the new facility, which will replace the existing station built 55 years ago. Cooroy Police Sergeant Mal Scott said all the feedback from the community on the initial design was

provided to the project manager. “We gathered all the feedback and provided it to the project manager. They’ve gone away and will come back with a redesign of the station based on that feedback. “The general consensus from the first consultation was that the police station needs to have more of a heritage look rather than a

modern look. “As the building at the gateway to our CBD, many feel a heritage look would be more in keeping with the character of Cooroy.” While the external design is up for consultation, Cooroy officers and Queensland Police Property and Facilities team are working together on the facility layout which

will include an office for the officer in charge, a general duties day room, an equipment store, a holding cell and an interview room. “Police stations have to be purpose-built with interview rooms and cells, so while the exterior design can be tweaked a little bit, the facility has to be a purpose-built police station,” Sergeant Scott said.

Construction on the replacement facility is scheduled to start in early 2023 with completion due in 2024. The project manager, architect, Queensland Police Property and Facilities team and local police officers will be at the second community consultation being held on Tuesday 23 August at 2 pm at the Cooroy Hotel.
