Bunker Hill Community College is the largest
community college in Massachusetts and
sits on 33 acres of land in the Charlestown
neighborhood of Boston. Current landscape
maintenance practices include regular mowing
of the nearly 20 acres of lawn, daily irrigation,
and planting annuals in the spring. An ecological
landscape plan for the college proposes to reduce
chemical inputs such as fertilizer and pesticides,
treat stormwater running off impervious
surfaces, decrease need for additional irrigation,
and reduce overall landscape costs. The plan also
incorporates community requests for shaded
seating areas, outdoor learning spaces, and
aesthetically pleasing plantings with multi-season
interest.
