Trends & Outlook 2026 What we expect to see across the Asian content landscape, amid global uncertainty, is the likely resurgence of uplifting, feel-good content following years of more intense stories. Second, socially-relevant stories that engage with real issues will remain important for buyers. Finally, with advertising revenues still under pressure, many broadcasters and platforms will continue leaning on acquired and cross-border content to help sustain their programming slates.”

Asia focus in 2026 As we elevate the scale and quality of our productions, we aim to expand into new territories while deepening our presence in markets where we have strong audiences. Ultimately, our goal is to create stories unbound by borders while staying authentically Filipino.”

Our drama slate spans various genres from romance to family, to thrillers, crime, and action. We also produce LGBTQ+ stories reflecting diverse perspectives and experiences. Film-wise, we cater to a broad spectrum of audiences with titles covering romance, family, horror, and comedy.

First seen on Netflix Philippines, IT’S OKAY TO NOT BE OKAY – the Philippine adaptation of the hit Korean drama from CJ ENM and Studio Dragon – debuted at number one on the platform, consistently topping the viewing charts. The series follows a cynical author who is forced to confront her emotional wounds upon meeting a man who challenges her worldview. Romantic thriller THE ALIBI centers on the heir to a media empire who hires an escort to serve as his alibi after being accused of murder; their agreement turning into a dangerous dance within a web of secrets. The series successfully launched on Prime Video ahead of its TV release, consistently ranking #1 in the Philippines during its run. Strengthening our partnership with Prime Video, we’ve developed a new original series called THE SILENT NOISE that follows a family left fractured after a deaf young boy misinterprets his mother’s affair and causes a tragic accident. Launching March 20 th in the Philippines and in more than 240 territories worldwide, the series explores the cost of accountability, while aiming to raise awareness for the deaf community. As global platforms continually trust us to help build their local slates, we remain ever grateful and equally excited to share even more entertaining and thought-provoking stories with the world.

Genres Our content strategy is anchored in a 360-degree content approach, ensuring that every title is designed to thrive across multiple platforms – film, TV, OTT, social media, and immersive unpirateable on-ground experiences. This multi-platform mindset allows us to deepen audience engagement while unlocking diverse monetisation opportunities. Astro produces a wide range of genres including TV shows, films, sports, kids programming, animation, travel, live music competitions, and talent search formats. This genre diversity enables us to cater to different audience segments while maintaining creative and commercial agility.

Original production/co-production Co-productions have worked well in the film space enabling us both domestic and regional exposure for our films and well as strong support from sponsors. We place strong emphasis on original productions, with standout titles such as Aadhira, First Wives, and Big Stage Alpha, a boyband/talent discovery format that has already produced two music hits and built a loyal fanbase. We actively produce and co-produce across film, drama and non-scripted formats, including live shows. Our collaborations with clients and partners often involve developing creative solutions tailored to their audience and brand objectives.

Asia focus in 2026 Looking ahead to 2026, our primary focus in Asia will be guided by relevance and audience behaviour. We aim to champion local IPs and stories that extend beyond Malaysia, unlocking better monetisation and distribution opportunities with regional partners. Live original formats will remain a core offering, while we continue building a pipeline of digital and social-first content designed for engagement and monetisation.”

Trends & Outlook in the next 12 months

Agnes Rozario, Chief Content Officer, Astro

First, generative AI and hyper-personalisation will be leveraged on more by platforms to tailor experiences, enabling more dynamic and responsive storytelling. This will not only enhance viewer satisfaction but also open new avenues for data-driven monetisation. Sports remains one of the genres that consistently delivers real-time audience attention but will be the focus of fewer platforms given the costs as well as expertise to deliver that best-in-class experience. Third, we foresee a surge in on-ground experiences that are both un-piratable and monetisable – meet-and-greet events with K-stars, concerts, and fan activations and extensions of big hits eg Netfliux’s K-pop Demon Hunters Sing Along in cinemas. These formats offer unique value propositions for both audiences and brands.”

Trends & Outlook 2026/2027 Asia is a market constantly evolving, creating trends and technologies that often go on to expand worldwide. The key trends shaping Asia’s audiovisual market will be driven by the continued migration from linear to digital. We will see more AVOD/SVOD hybrids evolving into new models, as FAST evolved from AVOD, expanding digital channel opportunities on platforms such as YouTube and Bilibili in China. In my opinion, vertical drama will reach its peak and begin to decline by 2027. Its growth has been incredibly fast, but so has the supply, which is now beginning to match audience demand. Genre’s preferences will remain relatively stable, with drama, thrillers, horror and sci-fi dominating clicks and audiences continuing seeking escapism through stories where love and kindness prevail, and the good people always win.

Genres

Romance and romantic comedy Feel-good romance and romantic comedies designed to appeal to broad audiences and provide strong repeat value, especially made for daytime TV and suitable for all ages. Christmas and holiday A sweeping catalogue of Christmas and holiday movies ranging from romantic Christmas stories and royal celebrations to family-oriented festive entertainment. The Christmas offering is one of the company’s strongest international propositions. Thrillers A substantial collection of female-skewed thrillers, mystery, and crime dramas, including contemporary “woman in peril” narratives, domestic suspense and true-event inspired stories, along with book to screen movies. Series An expanding series slate including crime, thriller, drama and comedy titles.

Co-Production: Building International Scripted Partnerships STUDIO TF1 AMERICA is also expanding its role in international co-production. The Sunshine Murders marks an important step in this strategy, bringing together STUDIO TF1 AMERICA and New Zealand-based Cork Films on a scripted crime series commissioned by Channel 5 in the UK. Set between Athens and New Zealand, the series follows two very different half-sisters who form an unlikely crime-solving partnership. The Sunshine Murders is currently on Amazon Prime Video, trending in several countries, including UK, New Zealand and Europe.

Genres Unscripted and scripted, spanning short-form and longform formats for brands, studios, broadcasters and digital platforms.

Latest Productions Man of the Hour (season 1)

TRENDS & OUTLOOK 2026 “Over the next year, Asia’s content landscape will be shaped less by individual formats and more by how projects are structured and financed. Crossborder co-productions are requiring clearer creative alignment earlier in the process, while tighter timelines and margin pressure are forcing producers to rethink scale, speed and consistency. These conditions are also accelerating more disciplined use of technology – particularly virtual production and AI – not to replace creativity, but to reduce friction and risk across production and post.” ASIA FOCUS IN 2026 “Our primary focus is a dual-track expansion, scaling our premium internal coproduction slate while leading a dedicated push into the micro drama space. We are not just testing the waters, we are leveraging our unscripted and scripted expertise to define the premium standard for short form storytelling. This allows us to capture the full spectrum of viewership, from cinematic streamers to mobile first audiences.” CREATIVE/TECHNICAL INNOVATION IN 2026 “We’re most interested in how virtual production and AI can shift decision-making earlier – helping creative teams resolve look, scale, and world-building before productions become costly to change. The impact isn’t just visual; it’s organisational. Earlier clarity leads to smoother shoots, fewer late adjustments, and more predictable post-production, which is increasingly critical in a fast-moving, multimarket production environment.” Karen Seah, Founder & CEO

Man of the Hour is an 8-episode adventure hosted by Wei Koh, taking viewers deep into the heart of watchmaking. From legendary watchmakers, skilled artisans to bold tastemakers, Wei reveals the stories, passions, and craftsmanship driving horology today, while exploring the traditions, innovations, and personal philosophies behind them. Each episode blends adventure, cultural discovery, and expert insight, showcasing not only the artistry of fine timepieces but also the places and people that define them. Genre: Docu-reality Handled full production cycle: Development/Production/ Post Filming location: Geneva, Paris, L.A., Singapore Airing on: Discovery Asia, Discovery+ U.S. and Prime Video

With the help of an artificial intelligence program, Rama and his father embark on a journey of reconnection and healing. (Co-production with Indonesia’s Base Entertainment)

Upcoming Productions Man of the Hour (season 2) In its second season, Man of the Hour delves even deeper into the captivating world of horology, exploring the legacies of some of the most iconic and legendary watch brands. Filmed across new locations around the globe – from the shores of Lake Geneva to the ateliers of Paris, the timeless streets of Rome, and the vibrant pulse of Singapore – the series offers unprecedented access to the stories behind names that have become synonymous with luxury and craftsmanship.

We Will Be Fine In a near-future island city ruled by an authoritarian regime, a family who make their living organising the belongings of the dead are abruptly forced into hiding. As they evade a government that tolerates no secrets, the family begin uncovering buried truths hidden within past cases – discoveries that challenge their understanding of power, memory, and whether confronting the past can still change the future. F

un fact: The top film on Netflix in Vietnam at the moment is American romantic dark comedy “Anora” about a street-smart sex worker from New York City who marries the son of a Russian oligarch. Did we expect Vietnam to be the only country in Asia where viewers watched this film enough to make it #1 for two consecutive weeks (24-30 Aug/31 Aug-6 Sept)? No. For both weeks, the film beat Vietnamese director Trấn Thành’s drama “Bunny!!”. Admittedly, “Bunny!!”, in its 14th week on Netflix’s Vietnam charts in early September, is nearing the end of its run, so the downward curve is natural. Also, Vietnam is not yet a priority market for Netflix the way Thailand or Indonesia are, so choices of domestic fare and marketing are limited. But still, during the latest week, “Anora” beat a mix of new and old titles in Vietnam, perhaps most surprisingly heartwarming Thai drama “Gohan” about a white, pink-nosed stray dog as he moves through various owners. “Gohan” placed 6th in its second week on Vietnam’s film top 10, behind U.S. crime thriller “The Whisper Man” (#2), and the 10-year-old American Western “The Magnificent Seven”. What’s our point? While theatrical skews heavily to domestic titles, Vietnam’s film tastes range as broad and wide as the most open of markets when it comes to streaming. Vietnamese films’ share of local box office this year is around 70%, according to industry stats; output is soaring, with projections of about 80 features in 2027 from ASIAA CC NTENT NTENTASI

less than 50 in 2025; production budgets are rising and there’s lively interest in coproductions. Although challenges – including IP protection and formal training – are clear, no one says Vietnam hasn’t earned its place around the world’s film table. Television? Not so much. For the most part, heavy regulation, high compliance costs and relatively low returns have wiped out much of international distributors’ initial enthusiasm for a market with a population of 100+ million. The death of Canal+’s long-running and dogged K+ platform, which closed January 2026 after 16 years and losses of US$225 million by mid-2025, didn’t help. At the same time, recent developments have given rise to cautious optimism, and talk of market potential is returning along with rumours of a domestic telcobacked Coupang-style e-commerce, content platform. Somewhere in the middle of despair and hope, there’s the formats sector. Once Asia’s bright spot, Vietnam’s adaptations of regional and international titles fell 74% from 19 productions in 2024 to 5 in 2025. A possible revival is led by the local adap-

tation of NBCUniversal Formats’ “Top Chef Vietnam”, produced by TV Hub, on Vietnam’s VTV3 in August. “Top Chef Vietnam” is the second big-brand adaptation announced in Vietnam this year. “The Face Vietnam” is also returning in a deal with Multimedia JSC after a three-year hiatus. The 10-episode fifth season airs on Vietnamese broadcaster VTV9 in October. A nice uplift. 49
