Dear Greater Memphis Community,
This issue of GREATER commemorates a historic moment for our Chamber — winning the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives’ Chamber of the Year award. This award is the highest achievement among chambers of commerce across the world. For our Grizzlies fans, this is like winning the NBA championship.
◗ The Chamber of the Year award recognizes excellence in operations, member services, and community leadership. The application was extensive. It was a project the whole team had a hand in. The judges wanted to know the ins and outs of our Chamber; they wanted to know our strengths and weaknesses. We submitted two of our recent initiatives for review: America’s River Crossing (now named King’s Crossing) and the Digital Delta. The judges were impressed, but not with us. With you.
◗ This award is not about us. It is about you, our members. Without you, none of this would be possible. The judges recognized the role our membership played in attaining the new bridge. They saw commitment from our business community in fulfilling our goals for Black tech talent and for creating the Digital Delta. Ultimately, it is the innovation, passion, and drive from our business community that allows us to do what we do.
◗ This award says that the Greater Memphis Chamber is the leading chamber of commerce in the country. The work we are doing — from our programs and events, to our strategic plan, to our members and investors — is the best of the best.
◗ But what does all this mean for Memphis? What does it mean for business? All eyes are on us now. Companies large and small are paying attention. We have unprecedented momentum, and it’s time for us to make a move. Not only should you expect to see advancements in our community, but this award validates what’s already been done. Now is our time, Memphis.
◗ Join us in celebrating not only what we already are, but what we will soon become.
◗ Let’s Be Greater!
Onward,
Ted Townsend PRESIDENT & CEO Greater Memphis Chamber

Meet the Chamber OF THE YEAR
Your Greater Memphis Chamber was recognized nationally, but the real honor is working for this business community.
BY JON W. SPARKS
July 23, 2025, was a day of high anxiety. And then unbridled joy.
The Greater Memphis Chamber had put extraordinary effort into going after the top prize among its peers in the arena of chambers of commerce. When the final announcement was made that day, by the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives, the Memphis contingent that won the 2025 Chamber of the Year award
It was not simply an acknowledgement of a single success, or of a very good year — though the Memphis Chamber certainly had had both — but moreover an awareness by people who know what business chambers are all about that this particular organiza-
tion had gone above and beyond. It was an appreciation of the range and effectiveness that can make a business advocacy group a powerhouse in planning, strategy, tactics, and vision. It was a recognition of a group that knows how to get things done.
As Greater Memphis Chamber president and CEO Ted Townsend put it, “It’s a national championship. We were proclaimed the best of the best out of 1,700 chambers in the top category.”
Officially, the award, sponsored by GrowthZone, recognizes excellence in operations, member service, and community leadership. And it requires considerable effort to make the case. The hurdles include
The Greater Memphis Chamber team gathered for a portrait after being recognized for excellence in Philadelphia.
a rigorous multi-stage evaluation with key performance metrics, followed by a comprehensive written application, and finally an in-person interview with respected chamber professionals.
That interview is a doozy. Townsend and Bobby White, the Chamber’s Chief Government Affairs Officer, sat for the questions. “It counts for two-thirds of the overall score,” Townsend says, “and you have 45 minutes to go over nine questions. If you don’t get to all nine, you’re disqualified. If you go over 45 minutes, you’re disqualified. We finished with 30 seconds to spare.”
In fact, the panel asked the Memphis team to stick around. “My peers wanted to hear more,” Townsend says. “They said they wanted to learn from us. They wanted to hear about the Chairman’s Circle, which is a really novel thing among other chambers.”
But it wasn’t a done deal until the award was announced in a ballroom in Philadelphia. Townsend has watched the video more than a few times and loves to see “the joy on everyone’s faces. It was truly profound for not just the Chamber, but for our city. And at a time when we needed a big win, we got one, the proverbial shot in the arm. It was a moment of pride I will never forget.”
For Townsend, it was important to go for the gold and get recognition for the Chamber. “For the last couple of years, I’ve known that our work is worthy, but if you don’t enter, you don’t win. So I was pushing and poking and prodding the team to consider at least getting in the game on some of these other awards. The first iteration of this was with the International Economic Development Council, of which we’re a member. We submitted multiple programs and initiatives and strategies, and we won several medals for that work.”
It was a tangible way to show the team and the rest of the world that the Greater Memphis Chamber was capable and worthy of recognition. “Then, fast forward and we won the 2024 Bronze Deal of the Year Award from Business Facilities Magazine, the only chamber to be recognized. That was a big, huge get.”
With those wins, it no longer seemed impossible to capture the Chamber of the Year award.
But this Chamber is not known for sitting on its laurels.
“The depth of the things that this organization sets its sight on and can accomplish is truly remarkable,” Townsend says. “We’ve set stretch goals and we’ve hit them while not sacrificing the team, their energy, and
“IT'S A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. WE WERE PROCLAMINED THE BEST OF THE BEST OUT OF 1,700 CHAMBERS IN THE TOP CATEGORY.”
—TED TOWNSEND PRESIDENT AND CEO, GREATER MEMPHIS CHAMBER
Ted Townsend, Bobby White, and colleagues celebrate receiving the Chamber of the Year award.
our resources. But I’m thinking, how far can we go? I’m not trying to test or break things, but I am very confident that we’ve got the team in place that can accomplish anything that we set our minds to. And it’s not just the Chamber, but it’s the business community that I feel like we’re carrying with us. There’s unmatched momentum that you can’t turn off now.”
He says that typical thinking runs along the lines of scarcity versus abundance. “But I’m trying to rewire so that we may not always be able to say, yes, we can do that, but let’s start with abundance and then figure out where we land from there.”
For more reflection on the Chamber’s present and future, we turned to a range of business leaders who have witnessed and contributed to the positive momentum.
Micheal Cristal is President of the Kroger Delta Division and serves on the Chamber’s Board of Directors.
Cristal has been with Kroger 40 years and showed leadership potential from the start. He started in Memphis and later had executive positions elsewhere in the country. In 2022 he was named to lead Kroger’s Delta Division, and his return to town showed him a different Memphis. “I had a vibe about the city when I came back,” he says. “It felt like things were very different than when I left in 2013. We were now part of the Chairman’s Circle.” Chamber President and CEO Ted Townsend asked him to join the board, and he was glad to accept.
Cristal notes that while Kroger is a Fortune 25 company and a top employer in the city, it has an intimate relationship with its customers who often are in Kroger stores several times a week. “We recognize and respect that we have a responsibility to this community,” he says. “We have an active role to support economic development,” and that ties in with the work of the Chamber that Cristal says is “so beneficial to this community.”
When the Chamber won the national recognition, Cristal was not surprised. “We have an awesome leader in Ted, and he has a talented team,” he says. “They wake up every morning with a tremendous amount of passion to really tell the story of Memphis. They also have really strong initiatives, whether it be Digital Delta, or Prosper Memphis 2030. And we’re being very intentional on saying we’re trying to get 50,000 STEM jobs with strong wages. We’re recognizing the demo -
above : Ribbon-cuttings are just one facet of the Chamber’s work, but they represent the momentum underway in this community.
graphics of this city and saying intentionally that about half of those jobs are going to go to people of color.
Cristal says that when he returned to Memphis, he saw how the city was on the cusp of taking off. “It looks like the community is coming together trying to deliver something greater than what I saw in 2013 when I left,” he says. “And for the Chamber to win that award, and then to look at BlueOval, to look at the Digital Delta, to look at the new bridge, and all those key initiatives — the Chamber has rallied this team to deliver and to win. Vision is one thing, strategy is another, but tactics are what gets it done. That’s what Ted and his team did. They had vision, they had strategies, but boy, they put the muscle to really bring that to life.”
Bobby White, Greater Memphis Chamber Chief Government Affairs Officer presented the organization’s application to the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives along with CEO Ted Townsend.
F or White, the award from the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives
has an elevated significance. “This is the recognition of peers. There are chambers of commerce around the nation trying to pull off a lot of the same things we are — recruit and retain talent, draw and drive economic development, make a difference. But we recognized we were in the middle of something special here with the run we’ve had. This recognition is not just a pat on the back. There’s a body of work that earned us this.”
White says it’s about far more than doing good work in a particular year. “It’s preparation,” he says, pointing to the Memphis Kings’ Crossing Bridge project that was
pandemic, and how hard it is with all of the competition now, with the implications of tariffs and how that impact has resonated for so many communities. And for us to do what we have done in the shadow of that and in spite of the criticism, I think just makes it all that much more special. It just gave us, again, a reminder that what we really have done really does deserve recognition and some of those voices we have heard are not wants to be really regarded.”
For White, the main idea is that there’s more to come. “We’re starting to see expansion with other companies. At this time in our history, it’ll be hard to miss the impact that the Chamber has had on our growth and our viability as a community, which is improving day by day.”
years in the making, even when it didn’t seem to be moving forward. The Chamber was ready when the moment came. White talks of “vision cast.” He says, “There’s a need for casting a vision that is beyond where you are right now. The story for me of this award and even xAI is not just the winning of xAI, it’s the casting of a vision when we were talking about Digital Delta before we had heard of xAI.”
And once something has been achieved, it’s never enough to think the job’s done. “Let’s not leave it there,” he says, mentioning the BlueOval City project. “Let’s see what it is to build on that and see what assets we have, not just to lure a BlueOval to our region, but to also see how we set ourselves up for the future.”.
That approach puts the award in perspective. “Our peers know how hard economic development is, even on the back of the
Duncan Williams is Chairman of Duncan Williams Asset Management. He serves as Chairman of the Chamber’s Board of Directors.
Williams has history with the Chamber as one of the initial forces behind the Chairman’s Circle. He knows what it’s like to get things done and is keen to enjoy a victory when it comes. So it was when the Chamber was named the 2025 Chamber of the Year.
“It’s a huge award, kind of our national championship, and we love a good national championship in Memphis,” he says.
Such recognition is one of the rewards of teamwork — and Williams says one of the huge strengths of the Chamber is communication. “That’s people digging in,” he says, citing the long push to get the Memphis Kings’ Crossing Bridge project underway, and the choice xAI made to locate here. “There are so many different things that, if the Chamber hadn’t been ready and we weren’t on full-attention to detail, they wouldn’t have happened,” he says. Further, these projects involve collaboration and cooperation at several levels, such as Ford’s BlueOval City that heavily involved the state of Tennessee, TVA, and other groups. “So many things that have to work together right now, but we’re on a hot streak. It’s a whirlwind and a lot of fun to be around.”
His vision for what the Chamber can do includes realizing the full potential of Downtown, being more proactive on workforce development, pushing the Digital Delta, and establishing a narrative about Memphis that emphasizes its achievements.
The Chamber of the Year award will help attain those goals, and Williams is quick to give credit where due: “I’m super proud of being part of the Chamber and watching this growth, but I’m more proud of the staff and what they did. We’ll take the credit being on the board and all that, but the staff really did an awesome job and the city should be super proud. I mean, it really is a world championship.”
Dotty Summerfield Giusti, owner of a recruiting agency, has long been involved in the Chamber, particularly its Small Business Council and Women’s Business Council and is serving on the Chamber Foundation Board.
Summerfield is a fourth-generation Memphian who is from a family of business owners. “I’ve been in this crazy recruiting industry since 1979 and opened my doors in 1989. I did two things in the first couple of years: joined the Chamber and joined the Better Business Bureau. As my business grew and I began to understand the things that small businesses don’t have, about 15 years ago, the Chamber came to some of us and said, do you think we need to start a component for small business?”
She says that small enterprises don’t have CFOs or legal departments or many of the advantages of big firms. “So we started the Small Business Council — and now 90-odd percent of Chamber members are small businesses.” That effort opens doors and makes introductions that boost the fortunes of smaller businesses.
Summerfield was instrumental in developing ideas to help small business resiliency, a project that evolved into the Chamber’s ambitious Prosper Memphis 2030 strategic plan that sets the organization’s sights on the future.
And the Chamber of the Year award is lifting all boats. “It shines a spotlight on us that we have not had before,” she says, “and is going to give us recognition. The Chamber recognized early on what not many people did: We’ve got the largest percentage of African-American tech talent in the country in Memphis, and the largest percentage of African-American women in technology in the country. Those technology changes that are coming to the city are only going to highlight that and let us move forward in better ways.”
She points out that the Chamber exists as member-driven and grant-driven, “which is
Duncan Williams
different than so many chambers across the country. We look to ourselves and determine the problems we need to solve and go out and figure out a way to solve them.”
Summerfield also has high praise for the Chamber’s get-it-done staff. “There’s a team of people down there that know what they want to do and they know where to go to get things done. I can turn to the Chamber with a question that sounds like a little thing, but they can get an answer. That’s because of preparation.”
Memphis would not be what it is without the Chamber, she says. “It’s the footprint that they leave day in and day out, the solutions they offer, the forward thinking they offer. When I look at what’s getting ready to happen, we know that workforce will solve more problems in this city than anything.”
That’s why Summerfield is upbeat. “Memphis gets in your blood. There is something joyful about this city and there’s something for everybody.”
Charles Harris, Realtor with Coldwell Banker Collins-Maury is one of the Chamber’s Ambassadors for a Greater Memphis.
In 2021, Harris made a pivot from a corporate job with a steady paycheck to what was, for him, a more interesting and challenging career in real estate. He got his license and started selling houses and the leap was terrifying. “Some days it’s still terrifying,” he says. “I had to find my own insurance and the whole shebang. I was suddenly a 1099 worker instead of a W2 employee.”
But it meant doing what he’d always wanted: owning a business in Memphis, which he feels is exactly the right-sized metropolis. “We’ve got all these big-city things that are really cool, and yet I can walk in a restaurant or Kroger and turn down an aisle and there’s somebody I know, which doesn’t happen in Houston.”
You won’t be able to buy a home from him without hearing about how great Memphis is. That naturally led to his wanting to be even more involved in the city, and he looked closely at the Chamber. “Lo and behold, they had a program called Ambassadors run by Terri Bosby.” The volunteer program puts enthusiasm to work representing the organization all around town.
As a committed booster of the city, he was thrilled by the Chamber of the Year award. While the application relied heavily on the Chamber’s significant triumphs with the
Digital Delta, the Memphis Kings’ Crossing Bridge project, bringing in xAI, and workforce development initiatives, Harris notes that the organization has made powerful strides in other areas. “There are all the other things that the Small Business Council promotes, that the Women’s Business Council promotes, all the ribbon cuttings, all the Grizzlies events. There’s so many when you talk about our community.”
Moreover, it’s not just about trumpeting achievements, but about acknowledging problems and looking for ways to work on them, from crime to education to poverty. “The Chamber hasn’t just tried to paint a rainbow story. And that’s part of the value of a Chamber — to not just tell the great story, but engage in the conversations on the challenges too.”
Neki Catron, Global Community Engagement Manager for Sylvamo, is a dedicated participant in numerous Chamber activities.
The global paper company is headquartered in Memphis and has about 300 employees here. And community is an essential part of its function, Catron says. “We are great steward of our community, and in fact, investing into our community is a part of our bylaws.”
It’s part of the Chamber’s Chairman’s Circle and has an interest in, as Catron says, “changing the narrative of a negative vision of Memphis. The Chamber has worked to
above : The Chamber works to create pathways to high-quality jobs by fostering a culture of success.
connect programs and innovations and has been instrumental in assisting Memphis to have that transitional and transformational change. That’s where they really thrive.”
She points out the investments that the Chamber has brought to Memphis and says, “As they continue to grow, we’ll be able to move forward in the educational space, in the entertainment space, what brings tourist dollars to our city and change what viewpoint that the world has for Memphis.”
And this ties directly to the impact of the Chamber’s award. “It has great consequences,” Catron says. “It puts us on the map. The Chamber has put us on a global scale from a marketing standpoint and from an investment standpoint, when you think of BlueOval City and xAI.”
Further, she says, “The Chamber bridges the gap for us to have a unified voice.”
The Greater Memphis Chamber devotes itself to advancing and celebrating you: local business leaders and forward-thinkers. We are grateful to the community that makes possible every ribbon-cutting, every big business move, every new initiative we are able to offer. Thank you for your belief and support in your Chamber. •

Stitching Success
This crochet business has become more than a side hustle.
BY TOBY SELLS
In a Facebook video, Chanielle Talbird crochets on a comfy-looking couch. Shot in the fast-forward, time-lapse style, complete sections of yarn flow quickly from under her needles, and she pauses only to hug and kiss her son who buzzes playfully around her.
“One of the reasons I decided to establish a Crochet with Chanielle business was my babies,” she explains in the video. “Look how peaceful I am. I’m in the comfort of my own
home. It’s therapeutic and my babies are literally within earshot of what I’m doing.”
The video concludes with Talbird showing off her creation, a beautiful green-yarn clutch purse with a gold-colored snap closure and chain-link strap, and a large, jaunty tassel dangling from one side. The design and craft are on-trend and expensive looking — not surprising, considering this is work from a third-generation fiber artist.
The mother of three recently went through a divorce and said she identified the need for a side hustle. But her work at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital already kept her plenty busy. She would need flexibility for a second job that also kept her close to her children. She also wanted something therapeutic.
This is how the former arts-and-crafts teacher returned to the contemplative practice of crochet. All of it together is the mix that makes Crochet with Chanielle work for Talbird — tradition, therapy, family, creativity, and hustling with purpose.
Talbird’s Jamaican grandmother, Inez, was a seamstress and taught her to crochet at age 9. Her grandfather was a tailor with his own Jamaican factory, where he created clothes and souvenirs for tourists. Talbird’s mother, Jennifer, is a sewing side-hustler, too, with her own online brand, Absolutely Uniquely Beautiful.
But the inspiration for Talbird’s purses? The multi-talented artist says they are “just God-given.”
“I don’t have a pattern for those,” she says. “I am the pattern.”
Talbird fuels the business side of Crochet with Chenielle with regular booths at popup shops, festivals, and her Etsy shop (ETSY. COM/SHOP/CROCHETWITHCHANIELLE). She also builds a crocheting community with regular in-person crochet sessions. And she’s busy on social media — Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram. The hustle is hard work.
“In business, you have to be a people-person,” Talbird says. “Regardless if you’re an introvert or an extrovert, you have to understand that you are creating a business solution for someone and you have to figure out whoever needs this product.”
She says her customer base comprises women between 18 and 45 years old, looking for something unique, and probably from the Memphis market. But they’re likely also pragmatists at heart. Talbird uses t-shirt yarn. So, her purses are machine washable and less likely to fall apart compared to some couture brands.
To arrive at this point, Talbird has been resourceful. She started with the Multicultural Entrepreneurship Accelerators program through the University of Memphis’ Crews Center for Entrepreneurship earlier this year. This earned her a free year of membership in the Greater Memphis Chamber. She then went through the Growing Relational and Occupational Wealth in West Tennessee Households program. She has also worked through programs at Epicenter.
Talbird said she hopes to employ others as she scales her business over the next three to five years. And, possibly, start a nonprofit for women who have survived domestic violence. •

Well Suited to Memphis
Milano’s Menswear is outfitting the community with more than just good threads.
BY TOBY SELLS
Alove of fashion in Lebanon grew into a successful business in Memphis — that in turn developed a love and respect for the city’s Whitehaven neighborhood.
Walid Rassoul opened the first Milano Menswear in Memphis in 1988. But this came after a career as an electrical engineer and some time spent living in Atlanta.
“I always liked clothing,” Rassoul says. “I’m Lebanese and the fashion industry that close to Europe was booming.”
He attended a few fashion-industry shows in Atlanta and found it all interesting, especially the suiting element. With this in mind, Rassoul came to Memphis, where he found a ripe market, opened his first store in the Southland Mall, and it “did extremely well.”
But why “Milano?”
“Milano [or Milan as Americans call it] is, basically, the fashion city in Italy and that’s where we first started getting our products from,” Rassoul says. “There was no globalization at the time, limited products. We got our product from Italy, so, that’s where Milano [as a store name] came from.”
Success for Milano saw the company’s Memphis footprint grow to four stores, then back to three as the Hickory Ridge Mall closed. Later, the chain would grow to 11 regional
locations. Covid and other factors closed Milano stores in Alabama and Arkansas, though Rassoul is considering his options in those areas. Milano stores can still be found in Missouri, Ohio, and, of course, Tennessee.
Suits comprise Milano’s core product line. Many sales are for the traditional black, navy, and gray suits worn to work, weddings, church, and special events. But Rassoul says about 20 percent of the business comes from high-fashion, statement pieces worn on stage for concerts and theater performances.
Milano’s slogan is “quality for less,” and Rassoul means it. He’s constantly hunting for the best-quality clothes at the best prices. He’s equally devoted to customer service. It’s something he says sets Milano apart.
Even though Rassoul closed the original Southland Mall store, he’s still very much committed to Whitehaven. Even though he had offers for other locations, he bought and remodeled a former Dollar General store on Elvis Presley Boulevard, in part because of his admiration for the area that is “truly, truly very close to our heart.”
“I owe it to the [Whitehaven] community to stay and keep that store in Whitehaven. We continue to have the same support here. It's an amazing community.”
—WALID RASSOUL CEO/PRESIDENT, MILANO'S MENSWEAR
“If you go to our stores, you can see we invest a lot in customer service,” he says. “This is a tremendous, unique approach in the market, especially in the last couple of years. Consumers find it very hard to find the level of customer service we offer.”
“I have refused to move out of Whitehaven because I always felt like the support that I received when I first came in 1988 and 1989 — it was overwhelming,” Rassoul says. “I owe it to the community to stay and keep that store in Whitehaven. We continue to have the same support here. It’s an amazing community. I love it dearly.”
Aside from jobs, vibrancy, and overall commercial support, Rassoud and Milano give back to Whitehaven schools with clothes donations — “a lot of clothes, to be honest.”
Rassoul said he wants to invest in Memphis, too. He has plans for Milano Academy, a school for anyone interested in learning the retail trade. •

At Hemline, women call the shots and research drives the decisions.
BY TOBY SELLS
It doesn’t get much more Memphis than the view from Hemline’s new office in the Cotton Exchange Building. It also may not get more Memphis than Hemline itself.
From the marketing firm’s bright and airy conference room, traffic slides by on the iconic Hernando de Soto Bridge. A barge floats south on the mighty Mississippi River. Construction workers hammer and clang to bring the new Memphis Art Museum out of the ground across the street.
This mix of history, the future, and a persistent forward momentum was a snapshot portrait of the city and a great metaphor for Hemline’s role in it. The firm now has a 20-year history in Memphis, shaping brands for Fortune 500 companies, entrepreneurs, and local favorites like the Memphis Farmers Market. Hemline also strives to keep talent in the city and to create a space for what they call the “sheconomy,” in which women can grow in business.
Hemline celebrated 20 years in business downtown with a very special “Hemline Huddle,” flying in its entire staff to Memphis for an annual retreat.
When Saatkamp and Morice founded Hemline, they saw a need for a more boutique approach to a marketing agency. That was “something that just really wasn’t happening here,” Saatkamp says. They found clients really liked having a 10,000-foot-view strategy but Hemline knew they needed more.
“We decided we were going to be an agency that was client-service and research-focused first. That would lead to the best creative.”
—CYNTHIA SAATKAMP PARTNER AND BRAND STRATEGIST, HEMLINE
Hemline was founded in 2003 by Cynthia Saatkamp and Kelley Morice. But they consider 2004 the real beginning. That’s when the firm moved into an office on South Main. Last year,
”What [clients] really also needed were people willing to get down in the trenches with them,” Saatkamp says. “People willing to do the hard work and say the things that they may not be able to say to a board of directors or stakeholders.
“So, we just leaned into it. We decided we were really going to be an agency that was clientservice and research-focused first. That would lead to the best creative — rather than saying, ‘Hey, beautiful logo! Now, let’s go make hay in the world.’ That's not the way we operate. We never have.”
It worked. For 20 years now, Hemline has
helped to launch Memphis staples like the Memphis Farmers Market and River Arts Fest. It has also supported a long list of Memphis staple groups and businesses, like the Community Foundation of Greater Memphis and Wiseacre.
This deep network continues to drive Hemline forward. Referrals create most of the company’s new business, says Andrea Wiley, a Hemline partner and director of client service.
“We hold our people close, and we treat them right,” Wiley says. “They get the benefits of that relationship. So, it grows, and the loyalty grows.”
Hemline also celebrated 20 years with a new achievement. The company completed the rigorous process to be certified by the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council, which calls the certificate “the gold standard for womenowned businesses in the U.S.” When Hemline started, they were among only a few womenowned agencies in Memphis, and the only one to be officially certified by the state.
Sometimes, the company struggled for invitations to decision-making conversations. But they continued proving their work, and Hemline now uses their seat at the table to hire and promote women. Saatkamp said the company helps their employees fall in love with Memphis so that they will stay local, and also urges them to get involved in nonprofits to make Memphis a better place. •

Tables and Lighting and Chairs, Oh My
At Event Rentals by Hicks, they orchestrate big events and special moments around the area.
BY TOBY SELLS
Memphians know and appreciate Event Rentals by Hicks, even if they don’t know exactly what the event outfitting group does.
The Memphis company has been the behind-the-scenes backbone of Memphis celebrations, festivals, and special events for 40 years. It’s likely you’ve sat in their chairs, danced on their floors, used their forks and spoons, and found respite from the heat beneath their tents. If you’ve ever been to a big, outdoor function in Memphis, you have likely experienced the work of Event Rentals by Hicks.
When company president Billy Hicks Jr. lists examples of where they work, it sounds like the high points from the annual Memphis social calendar. Mimosa Festival. The Lemon Drop Festival. The Indian Festival. Tiger Lane and all its University of Memphis tailgating. In-stadium hospitality at the Simmons Liberty Bowl. The Southern Heritage Classic. The St. Jude Memphis Marathon, both on race day and at the preceding runner’s expo. Church of God in Christ gatherings. The Delta Fair. The Mid-South Fair.
Billy Hicks Sr. dabbled in sound, his son says. So, when the company really began, it focused more on lights and speakers than on
tents and dance floors.
“Back in the early 1970s and 1980s, we were a production company, staging sound and lighting,” Hicks says. “We were the founding audio company for Memphis In May and the founding audio company for the WDIA Stone Soul Picnic down in Tom Lee Park.”
But Hicks Sr. got a call in 1984 that would point him in a new direction. A company called Total Exposition Concepts from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania knew Hicks had warehouse space in Memphis. They asked him to head up their convention services department for them here. He agreed and for a time, Hicks did both sound production and event services for the other company.
father. It was a craft food trade show at the old Concourse Hall at what was then known as the Cook Convention Center.
The company would add new clients like Kroger and Malone and Hyde. Then, someone would ask if the company had a moon bounce or a tent they could rent for a child’s birthday party. If they didn’t have it, they’d get it, Hicks Jr. recalls, and the company slowly grew its inventory.
“We just really want to make our city shine.”
—BILLY HICKS JR. PRESIDENT AND CEO, EVENT RENTALS BY HICKS
“Then, he thought, ‘I’m making these guys all this money and sending it back to Harrisburg,” says Hicks, Jr. “‘Maybe I should start my own deal.’ And that’s exactly what he did in September of 1986.”
Event Rentals by Hicks was born. Hicks Jr. remembers its first event, a family affair with him, his brother, sister, mother, and
“Now, we’re one of the only places in the Mid-South where you can go and get 20,000 black folding chairs,” Hicks Jr. says.
Saying ‘yes’ to customer requests is a hallmark trait of Event Rentals by Hicks. This kind of customer service is growing scarce. It sets the company apart, especially with a talented team of welders, electricians, carpenters, and more.
The pride in their work, too, comes from endeavoring to make Memphis proud.
“We just really want to make our city shine. So, we really try to go above and beyond, and that’s worked well for us.” •

PARTNERING WITH MEMPHIS FOR THE PAST 100 YEARS
In 1925, President Charles E. Diehl made the pivotal decision to move the college to Memphis, believing that relocating to a larger city would help secure its future. One hundred years later, Rhodes College proudly stands as everything Diehl envisioned when he sought the move: a world-class college, closely intertwined with its city, that continues to prioritize intellectual engagement and meaningful service to others. Our graduates and alumni continue that mission through their work in our city, around the nation, and throughout the world. As we celebrate the college’s 100th year in Memphis, we extend heartfelt thanks to our beloved city for our strong partnerships that have endured for decades and for the many ways you continue to champion and support Rhodes.
A proud sponsor of Rhodes’ 100 years in Memphis celebration
