We’re also proud to provide janitorial and customer service jobs to individuals with disabilities through federal and state contracts — offering not just a paycheck, but a path to self-sufficiency and dignity. In fact, over 75% of our contract employees are individuals with disabilities. Together, these locations help create more than 750 jobs each year, for individuals who face barriers to employment,

including those with disabilities, limited education, background concerns or other challenges. EMPOWERING ADULTS THROUGH EDUCATION FOR THE PAST 10 YEARS! Education is a core pillar of our mission. In 2015, we launched The Excel Center — a free high school for adults who are ready to return and complete their education. The Excel Center doesn’t just help adults graduate—it helps them thrive. Dear Greater Memphis Community,

his issue of Greater is FOR MEMPHIS, and so is everything we do at the Greater Memphis Chamber.

◗ When I stepped into the role of Chairman, I did so with a deep and abiding belief in this city. I see Memphis for what it is today, and I see clearly what it can become tomorrow. That vision is grounded in four priorities that guide my tenure: economic development, workforce development, downtown, and our narrative. ◗ Economic Development is the heart of what the Chamber does. Over the past several years, Memphis has experienced unprecedented economic growth, from transformative investments like SpaceXAI to the continued expansion of homegrown companies that have made Memphis their home for generations. Our project pipeline is stronger than it has ever been, with billions in potential capital investment and thousands of new jobs on the horizon. I intend to keep that momentum going. ◗ Workforce Development goes hand in hand with economic development. We cannot attract world-class companies without world-class talent, and that pipeline starts with our students. Through our Prosper Memphis 2030 plan, we are building pathways that prepare Memphians of every background to seize the opportunities coming our way. A stronger workforce means a stronger Memphis. ◗ Downtown is our front porch. A vibrant downtown is the clearest indicator of a vibrant city. Though it makes less than 1% of our city’s landmass, downtown stands as one of the most powerful drivers of our tax base, an outsized economic impact that deserves our continued investment and our personal presence. I encourage each of you to get downtown often. Dine and shop. Hold your meetings and conferences here. Show up for the arts, the music, and the culture that make Memphis unlike anywhere else in the world. ◗ Changing the Memphis Narrative is essential to the success of every other goal. There are good stories all around us, positive things happening every single day that too often go untold. That is why I launched a weekly newsletter, FOR MEMPHIS, to shine a spotlight on the people, events, and achievements making our city GREATER. I ask each of you to do the same: share the good news of Memphis with your networks, here at home and far beyond our city limits. ◗ Memphis is on the move. The momentum is real, the opportunity is here, and the future belongs to those willing to build it together. FOR MEMPHIS. The Chamber’s Chairman is striving each week to shift the stories we tell about our city.

n January, when Duncan Williams began his term as Chairman for the Greater Memphis Chamber, he immediately set to work. Duncan is on a mission to change the narrative about Memphis. As he wrote, “I’m not talking about spin. I’m talking about sharing the good news that’s plentiful in our community while acknowledging the challenges we face.” And every week since, he has done just that. On Tuesday mornings, at precisely 9:01 a.m. (get it?), Duncan shares the city’s wins big and small in his “For Memphis” newsletter through the Greater Memphis Chamber. He asks recipients of the good news to share the

messages with employees and teammates, friends and family, people near and far, to help balance the story we tell about Memphis. “For Memphis” is a welcome dose of positivity on Tuesday mornings — a moment to stop and smile about all the good happening in Memphis. And now that the newsletter has been rolling for several months, and Duncan’s idea has gained momentum, the weekly wins being celebrated can be added together to create an inspiring new view. And so that’s just what we are offering in this season’s cover story: an opportunity to let the good news rise to the surface, while never losing sight of the work ahead.

We’ve had positive news from our local schools and universities— the talent of our young people is incredible. Built on a Love of Memphis

Blues City Tours Transportation keeps Memphis close to heart. BY TOBY SELLS

he love of Memphis helped found Blues City Tours Transportation. Sharing that love with others created a thriving business. The company hit the road for the first time in 1988 when Melvin Bledsoe bought a church van. He later exchanged that van for a bus, and one bus expanded into a fleet of eight that now criss-cross hotspots for Memphis visitors and even the University of Memphis band. “He pushed Memphis. That was his love,” said Monica Holley, Bledsoe’s daughter and now the owner of Blues City Tours. “Showing people the city and all the great attractions that we have here in the city.” Bledsoe helped open Graceland as an attraction, Holley said, and worked for another tour company that, ultimately decided to get out of the business. So, Bledsoe decided to start his own. That launch made Blues City Tours Transportation the city’s first private, local, African-American-owned tour bus company. Holley grew up inside the business. She remembers passing out brochures and greeting guests as they boarded the buses. She moved away to Atlanta for many years, until she got a call from her father. He asked if she’d be interested in returning to Memphis, and taking the reins of the business. Upon her return,

From Firehouse to Full-Service Waste Solutions

For his next act, William Muhammad builds a waste-management company. BY TOBY SELLS

unk Jumpers launched in 2019 when a firefighter started looking ahead to retirement. William Muhammad has been fighting fires for 27 years. Upon his retirement in two years, he’ll go full time as the founder of a waste-removal service, in an industry in constant demand. The idea for Junk Jumper came when Muhammad was helping a friend who had taken over a junk-removal service. The business seemed right for him and, again, he was in the market for a future opportunity. He turned to what he calls “YouTube University,” studying the junk removal industry and researching others in the business. “I went ahead and I prayed about it,” Muhammad says, “and then things started falling into place.” He owned a truck, but needed a trailer. What happened next felt providential. A family friend who initially declined to sell him a trailer called back months later. Instead of the 16-foot trailer he expected, it was a 20-foot utility trailer. For $600. Muhammad hooked it up, without knowing exactly how to properly maneuver a trailer. However, after the drive from Batesville, Miss. back to Memphis, “I was pretty good at it.” From there, he hustled. 26 | G R E A T E R

But while her corporate career was thriving, her calling was quietly shifting. “My passion for design became more intense, and my passion for the corporate world was less and less,” she says. Tekila Restaurant Group innovates with each next step. BY TOBY SELLS

hat began as a single TexMex restaurant in Cordova has grown into a diverse and ex panding family of concepts across the Mid-South. The Tekila Restaurant Group started as a nightclub/restaurant called O’Cielo on American Way. That business was started by Jose Gomez and his brother, Alex. They decided they liked the restaurant side of the business and worked to open the very first Tekila Mexican Bar & Grill on Germantown Parkway. One successful year later, they opened a near-identical version of the Cordova location in Jackson, Tennessee, according to Tekila controller Ricardo Rivera, Jose’s son. That early success laid the groundwork for growth. In 2020, the group began construction on what is now the Tekila in Southaven. When it opened in 2022, it represented a shift for the restaurant group. “That concept is upscale casual,” Rivera said. “It’s got Tex-Mex touches. But we did want it to be a little nicer.” Tekila owners wanted to change how MidSoutherners thought about Mexican cuisine. For Jason Weatherford, CEO and multi-store owner of the Midasautomotive.com brand of Midas locations, there is a clear approach to running a business: family, community, and company. Taking care of one directly impacts the other, forming a symbiotic relationship geared toward success. Jason puts his family first and foremost on his list of priorities because, to him, family is everything. He lives in Tupelo with his wife Corrie and their three children: Grace, 13, Ava, 9, and Patton, 8. After leaving Tupelo nearly two decades earlier, Jason was called back to the area. The journey included stops in multiple states and a significant risk to come full circle.

“Midas would not be here without my wife Corrie. She’s truly the one that has made it possible because she believed in all my wild ideas, even when I doubted myself.” - Jason The biggest of those ideas was to leave the finance world and buy a trio of Midas locations in their hometown region. “We started in the Tupelo, Columbus, and Oxford area just over three years ago,” said Jason. “We took over some stores that were not communityinvolved stores. They were not really something that

the residents in those areas could say they were proud to have in their community.” Growing up in Tupelo, Jason saw firsthand what meaningful community involvement by business owners looked like. Those business names were well known, and they were engaged with the local schools and organizations. That visibility and commitment left a lasting impression—one that continues to shape how he leads today. Jason found himself a victim of the “brain drain,” or the exodus of skilled, educated individuals to other areas in search of opportunities. Now that he’s back, he is using community involvement to combat the issue and help the communities Midas serves grow in the process. From reopening local dirt track raceways to supporting civic clubs and school fundraisers, Jason views Midas as a way to give back and strengthen the communities Midas calls home. “We reinvest everything back into our team and our growth in the community,” he said. “We’re just doing what we can to be that staple within the community. To show that Midas is here not just to fix your cars, but to take care of the community as well.” That dedication seems to have paid dividends, with Midas being locally recognized for the best

auto care, oil changes, and best company to work for in Tupelo. Jason believes the most crucial facet of any business, the one that ultimately makes it or breaks it, is its employees. At Midas, happy employees lead to success. It’s this sentiment that governs Jason’s style of management. “Our family is not just my wife, my children, brother, sister, mom, or Dad; it’s this entire organization,” he said. “Everybody on our team is our family. Our customers are our family.” Jason describes himself as a servant leader. Rather than managing from an ivory tower, he remains actively involved in day-to-day operations, often working on-site at one of the locations. Jason does his best to make sure the technicians have the latest and best tools. Ultimately, he wants his employees to have the support they need to succeed, which not only strengthens the Midas family but also benefits the community as a whole.

“I like to give everybody an opportunity to be successful. Happy employees take care of other employees, and they take care of customers. Happy customers give you repeat business. Then you just keep repeating that cycle, and you keep developing your people to become better versions of themselves.” - Jason In 2024 and 2025, Jason’s chain of Midas locations underwent an expansion of six new locations in the Memphis market. Expansion is key for the future success of Midas, but improving the existing locations is equally important. “We’re looking for opportunities for growth,” he said. “We can do a lot with the stores that we have. It’s not just about increasing the number of stores. We are focused on growing and maximizing opportunities.” Recently, the Tupelo and Oxford locations doubled their capacity, and the Columbus location nearly doubled. Ultimately, Jason wants to make sure the business doesn’t lose sight of what’s truly important, which is the communities that they serve. “We pride ourselves on being involved in the community and want to make sure we don’t lose that as we grow,” said Jason. Weatherford and his team were recently awarded the Mark Smith Community Award at Midas 70th Anniversary Convention in Savannah, Georgia.
