Welcome to Season 31 at GPAC!
As the newly appointed Executive Director of GPAC, I am honored and humbled to serve this outstanding organization and to lead its remarkable team. With deep respect for Paul Chandler, who led GPAC for the past 13 years and left an indelible mark, I aim to build on his legacy so that GPAC thrives well into its next decades.
What’s the plan? With an unshakeable belief in the power of the arts to inspire, connect, educate, and even heal, we will create spaces where people can either dip their toes or immerse themselves completely in a wide variety of artistic genres—from bluegrass to jazz, from dance to classical music, from concerts to art classes. We will have something for everyone, and we will continue to proudly welcome folks from all walks of life and the entire Mid-South region to our world-class performance hall right here in the heart of Germantown.
We will shout from the rooftops our commitment to excellence, and we will continue to deliver the absolute best customer service—values in complete alignment with our most important partner, the City of Germantown. We will loudly celebrate the City’s strong commitment to the arts, and we will amplify its support to enhance the quality

of life of its families for generations to come by diversifying programming, creating more local arts partnerships, and nurturing greater community support.
GPAC’s 31st season brings international superstars to the main stage in the Highland Capital Performance Hall and amazing local talent through the Concerts in The Grove Series presented by SouthWorth Capital Management. We are also introducing a visionary new chamber music series called On Stage with Iris Collective and a new tap dance class for adults. During this extraordinary season, I invite you to come experience the magic that happens when a community gathers around music. Engage your senses, try something new and unexpected, and collectively create lifelong memories with us.

Finally, I thank you for your dedication and your financial support. We cannot succeed in any of this without YOU.

With excitement for the future, Parke Kennedy

Executive Director

Dear Friends of GPAC,
I often say that the spirit of collaboration, combined with the pursuit of excellence, is one of the City of Germantown’s greatest strengths. The very special public and private partnership that created GPAC thirty-one years ago is a great example of what we can do together to create and sustain the kind of community where families want to live, learn, stay and prosper.
Our shared commitment to the arts is one of the many reasons Germantown continues to stand out as a community of choice. City leadership over thirty years ago and city leadership today share an unshakeable belief in the high return on its investment in GPAC and the value public funding for the arts brings to our culture, economy and quality of life. Since its inception in 1994 when Ray Charles took the stage and set the highest standards for excellence, GPAC has made us proud. With its magnificent array of talented artists, wide range of performances and art forms, creative arts education programming and unwavering e orts to serve local nonprofits, the schools and the city, GPAC not only serves as the artistic center of this premier community but is also widely recognized as a premier performing arts center.

“Elias’ strengths as a jazz artist, combined with her roots in São Paulo, make her one of the most impressive interpreters of jazzlinked bossa novas, sambas and choros….” – Los Angeles Times
Award-winning pianist, singer, composer, and arranger Eliane Elias’ distinctive musical style is one of the most unique and immediately recognizable sounds in jazz and Brazilian music. She blends her Brazilian roots and alluring voice with her virtuosic instrumental jazz, classical, and compositional skills while consistently displaying her pianistic mastery and ability to integrate the many artistic roles she takes on.
With the release of her 2024 recording Time and Again, Elias proves that she remains a multifaceted, groundbreaking artist who continues to reach new heights in a brilliant career spanning decades. The music on Time and Again reflects the same level of artistry and ingenuity Elias has demonstrated throughout her career, surprising us time and again with her creative ability, this time producing an entire album of her own compositions with lyrics in English and Portuguese.

To date, Elias has won two Grammy Awards and two Latin Grammy Awards and has been nominated in five categories, having received 11 Grammy and Latin Grammy nominations thus far. With 32 albums and over 2.5 million sold to date, Elias has toured in 78 countries and is a four-time Gold Disc Award recipient, a three-time Best Vocal Album winner in Japan, and a winner of the 2018 Edison Lifetime Achievement Award in Holland. Melding her immense talents in jazz, Brazilian, classical, and pop music, Elias is, as Jazziz magazine has called her, “a citizen of the world” and an “artist beyond category.”
Her performance will be a tribute to Memphis’ own jazz giant, the late great radio personality Malvin Massey, who was an avid supporter of GPAC and an even greater fan of Elias. JAZZ

– Miles Davis
A true icon of modern music who is now in the seventh decade of his professional life, Hancock remains where he has always been: at the forefront of world culture, technology, business, and music.
Hancock has been an integral part of every popular music movement since the 1960s. As a member of the Miles Davis Quintet, he pioneered a groundbreaking sound in jazz and developed new approaches on his own recordings.
His work in the 70s—with record-breaking albums such as Head Hunters, which became the first jazz album to go platinum— combined electric jazz with funk and rock in an innovative style that continues to influence contemporary music. By the mid70s, Hancock was playing for stadiumsized crowds all over the world and had no fewer than four albums in the pop charts at once. Throughout his explorations, he has transcended limitations and genres while maintaining his unmistakable voice.
in which he also appeared as an actor—and has received 34 Grammy nominations and 14 wins throughout his illustrious career, including awards for Album of the Year, Improvised Jazz Solo, Best Contemporary Jazz Album, Best Jazz Instrumental Solo, and many more.

“Few musicians today are as versatile as Marcus Miller: bassist, keyboardist, bass clarinetist, film composer, producer and more.” – NPR
At the top of his game for over 40 years, bassist Marcus Miller is a two-time Grammy Award winner, winner of the 2013 Edison Award for Lifetime Achievement in Jazz, and winner of the 2010 Victoire du Jazz, and he was appointed as a UNESCO Artist For Peace in 2013.
His characteristic bass sound has left an indelible mark on a limitless catalog of musical hits, from Bill Withers’ “Just the Two of Us” to Luther Vandross’ “Never Too Much,” as well as songs from Chaka Khan, David Sanborn, Herbie Hancock, Eric Clapton, Aretha Franklin, George Benson, Elton John, and Bryan Ferry, to name a few.
With his distinctive style—a unique combination of funk, groove, soul, and pure technical skills—Miller has been referred to as one of the most significant bass players in jazz, R&B, fusion, and soul. Bass Player Magazine includes him on its list of the ten most influential jazz players of this generation.
Miller has a rich and very deep resume of

outstanding collaborations, including a 15year songwriting and production partnership with Luther Vandross, resulting in 13 consecutive platinum-selling albums of which Miller produced seven. After several years of touring in Miles Davis’ band in the early 80s, Miller developed a close professional and personal relationship with Davis, which led to his collaboration on three critically acclaimed albums. Notably, Miller composed, produced, arranged, and performed on the groundbreaking album Tutu and its title track, which is widely regarded as a significant addition to the canon of contemporary jazz music.

On top of his collaborative work, Miller has been a prolific artist and bandleader in his own right for well over 20 years, having released over a dozen albums under his name. His latest studio album, Laid Black, features special guest performances by Trombone Shorty, Kirk Whalum, Patches Stewart, Take 6, Jonathan Butler, and guest vocalist Selah Sue.
In 2022, Marcus composed the score for the documentary film Sidney for Apple TV+, produced by Oprah Winfrey, which tells the story of legendary actor, filmmaker, and iconic civil rights activist Sidney Poitier.

“Everything that we’re looking for on this show just walked onto that stage.”
– Howard Stern, America’s Got Talent
Catapult is a shadow-illusion performance company that launched into the limelight and into the homes of millions of people around the world as finalists on America’s Got Talent in 2013. Since then they have been busy touring the world with their smash hit show Magic Shadows. Heidi Klum and Howard Stern were two of their very first fans, and now they’ve added many thousands around the globe, transporting audiences into fantastical worlds made simply out of light and the human body!

Catapult’s shows are an amalgamation of dance, theater, acrobatics, illusion, and storytelling. Their stunning visuals coupled with whimsy, heart, and athleticism create a spellbinding show perfect for all ages. They’ve been featured in music videos for rappers, performed for royal families, helped non-profits such as the Girl Scouts and United Way, filmed for HBO, and currently tour all over the U.S., Europe, and Asia.
Catapult’s impact on the audience doesn’t end with their stage show. The company also provides imaginative workshops, residencies, and abbreviated school shows combining art and science for maximum immersion and impact with every community.

Audiences everywhere have been delighted to enter Catapult’s amazing world of Magic Shadows, filled with apparently e ortless transformations, and have endlessly applauded the unbelievable images that appear on the stage. Using only music and shadows, Catapult performers can transform from a mouse to a full-sized elephant to a car with headlights in an instant. Not only is the show packed with hundreds of shape transformations, but it is also full of humor, emotion, and engaging stories.
Catapult’s creator, Adam Battelstein, has worked as a dancer, actor, choreographer, and writer for the past 25+ years. In addition to a half dozen television commercials, he has appeared on Good Morning America, Late Nite with Conan O’Brien, The Ellen Show, The Oprah Winfrey Show, and the 2007 Academy Awards. During his 19 years working for Pilobolus Dance Theater—where he served as a performer, choreographer, Creative Director, and Master Teaching Artist—Battelstein taught residencies and workshops for Pilobolus all over America.

SATURDAY JAN 31 8PM
Coming together once again as they did in Georgia on My Mind, a celebration of the genius Ray Charles and his incomparable catalog, all-star performers Take 6, Clint Holmes, and Nnenna Freelon collaborate to laud two of their favorite singer-songwriters with Withers to Wonder: Celebrating the Songs of Bill Withers and Stevie Wonder
When Stevie Wonder inducted Bill Withers into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, they discussed collaborating on a show. With Bill Withers' passing, that dream never materialized—yet the inspiration behind it drove these singers to take on these songs! Take 6, Clint, and Nnenna wondered, "What if…?," and a show was born.
The songs of these legendary artists reflect life's experiences—the tapestry of our lives. For Take 6, Holmes, and Freelon, Withers' and Wonder's music holds a place of reverence and deep love, a passion they couldn’t contain until they created this special collaboration. Each contributing musician has had a unique relationship to the songs of these great artists, and the storytelling elements of each come through as they bring all your favorite hits by Withers and Wonder to life!

Stevie Wonder, a dear friend and mentor, has often appeared with Take 6, and Freelon herself felt his admiration when he reached out with support as she recorded his songs for her Tales of Wonder album.
With ten Grammy awards, ten Dove Awards, and a Soul Train Award and as members of the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, the musical phenomenon Take 6 has six virtuosic voices united in crystal-clear harmony against a backdrop of syncopated rhythms, innovative arrangements, and funky grooves that bubble into an intoxicating blend of genres.
Captivating and versatile, Clint Holmes is a musical chameleon, a jazz singer who can do, and has done, just about everything. With an electrifying stage presence and a voice that envelops any space, Holmes has been mesmerizing audiences on some of the most prestigious stages in the world for years.
A woman of countless talents, six-time Grammy Award nominee Nnenna Freelon is a compelling artist, writer, composer, and producer who captivates audiences in any setting and in any genre. No stranger to the music of master singers, Freelon toured with jazz legends Ray Charles, Al Jarreau, George Benson, Ellis Marsalis, and many more.

Generous community support, individual donors, and volunteers make it possible for GPAC’s musical and educational programs to grow and flourish. There are many ways to take part in the life of GPAC. Explore the following opportunities and get involved.
Since 2006, GPAC has reached over 40,000 children through a variety of arts education programs both at GPAC and in the surrounding community. In order to sustain current arts education programs and support new initiatives, the GPAC Arts Education Fund was launched in the spring of 2016. The fund supports GPAC’s education and outreach programs, scholarships for the GPAC Youth Symphony Program, and art grants for Germantown nonprofits.
Please contact Parke Kennedy, Executive Director, at 901-751-7505 or parke@gpacweb.com for information or to make a donation.
The Germantown Performing Arts Guild is an organization of women who share the common interest of promoting the arts in our community. Guild members o er their time, talents, and consistent support for the many varied activities at GPAC. In addition to supporting the arts, the Guild members also support the community; a favorite activity is an annual dinner, prepared by members, to recognize and honor our First Responders. The Guild meets at GPAC the third Monday of each month.
For information about joining this innovative group, contact Roberta Hefley, Guild President, at 404-441-4861
