As the newly appointed Executive Director of GPAC, I am honored and humbled to serve this outstanding organization and to lead its remarkable team. With deep respect for Paul Chandler, who led GPAC for the past 13 years and left an indelible mark, I aim to build on his legacy so that GPAC thrives well into its next decades.
What’s the plan? With an unshakeable belief in the power of the arts to inspire, connect, educate, and even heal, we will create spaces where people can either dip their toes or immerse themselves completely in a wide variety of artistic genres—from bluegrass to jazz, from dance to classical music, from concerts to art classes. We will have something for everyone, and we will continue to proudly welcome folks from all walks of life and the entire Mid-South region to our world-class performance hall right here in the heart of Germantown.
We will shout from the rooftops our commitment to excellence, and we will continue to deliver the absolute best customer service—values in complete alignment with our most important partner, the City of Germantown. We will loudly celebrate the City’s strong commitment to the arts, and we will amplify its support to enhance the quality

of life of its families for generations to come by diversifying programming, creating more local arts partnerships, and nurturing greater community support.
GPAC’s 31st season brings international superstars to the main stage in the Highland Capital Performance Hall and amazing local talent through the Concerts in The Grove Series presented by SouthWorth Capital Management. We are also introducing a visionary new chamber music series called On Stage with Iris Collective and a new tap dance class for adults. During this extraordinary season, I invite you to come experience the magic that happens when a community gathers around music. Engage your senses, try something new and unexpected, and collectively create lifelong memories with us.

Finally, I thank you for your dedication and your financial support. We cannot succeed in any of this without YOU.

With excitement for the future, Parke Kennedy

Executive Director

Dear Friends of GPAC,
I often say that the spirit of collaboration, combined with the pursuit of excellence, is one of the City of Germantown’s greatest strengths. The very special public and private partnership that created GPAC thirty-one years ago is a great example of what we can do together to create and sustain the kind of community where families want to live, learn, stay, and prosper.
Our shared commitment to the arts is one of the many reasons Germantown continues to stand out as a community of choice. City leadership over thirty years ago and city leadership today share an unshakeable belief in the high return on its investment in GPAC and the value public funding for the arts brings to our culture, economy, and quality of life. Since its inception in 1994 when Ray Charles took the stage and set the highest standards for excellence, GPAC has made us proud. With its magnificent array of talented artists, wide range of performances and art forms, creative arts education programming, and unwavering e orts to serve local nonprofits, the schools, and the city, GPAC not only serves as the artistic center of this premier community but is also widely recognized as a premier performing arts center.

SATURDAY JAN 31 8PM
Coming together once again as they did in Georgia on My Mind, a celebration of the genius Ray Charles and his incomparable catalog, all-star performers Take 6, Clint Holmes, and Nnenna Freelon collaborate to laud two of their favorite singer-songwriters with Withers to Wonder: Celebrating the Songs of Bill Withers and Stevie Wonder
When Stevie Wonder inducted Bill Withers into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, they discussed collaborating on a show. With Bill Withers' passing, that dream never materialized—yet the inspiration behind it drove these singers to take on these songs! Take 6, Clint, and Nnenna wondered, "What if…?," and a show was born.
The songs of these legendary artists reflect life's experiences—the tapestry of our lives. For Take 6, Holmes, and Freelon, Withers' and Wonder's music holds a place of reverence and deep love, a passion they couldn’t contain until they created this special collaboration. Each contributing musician has had a unique relationship to the songs of these great artists, and the storytelling elements of each come through as they bring all your favorite hits by Withers and Wonder to life!

Stevie Wonder, a dear friend and mentor, has often appeared with Take 6, and Freelon herself felt his admiration when he reached out with support as she recorded his songs for her Tales of Wonder album.
With ten Grammy awards, ten Dove Awards, and a Soul Train Award and as members of the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, the musical phenomenon Take 6 has six virtuosic voices united in crystal-clear harmony against a backdrop of syncopated rhythms, innovative arrangements, and funky grooves that bubble into an intoxicating blend of genres.
Captivating and versatile, Clint Holmes is a musical chameleon, a jazz singer who can do, and has done, just about everything. With an electrifying stage presence and a voice that envelops any space, Holmes has been mesmerizing audiences on some of the most prestigious stages in the world for years.
A woman of countless talents, six-time Grammy Award nominee Nnenna Freelon is a compelling artist, writer, composer, and producer who captivates audiences in any setting and in any genre. No stranger to the music of master singers, Freelon toured with jazz legends Ray Charles, Al Jarreau, George Benson, Ellis Marsalis, and many more.

“There has been a jam band-sized hole in bluegrass over the past few years, and Yonder Mountain String Band returns just in time to lift the genre up once again.”
Yonder Mountain String Band, a driving force in roots music for nearly three decades and a key player in the progressive jamgrass movement, is kicking o a new chapter with their latest project, Nowhere Next. This new venture follows their 2022 album Get Yourself Outside, which received a Grammy nomination for Best Bluegrass Album, adding depth and momentum to Yonder’s rich musical legacy.
Deemed “one of the leading practitioners of modern bluegrass” by Bluegrass Today, Yonder is credited for their “astute combination of melody and musicality” which allows the group to emulate “the way today’s musical tastes inform bluegrass music’s contemporary impact.”
Nowhere Next showcases the musical talents and collaborative writing e orts of founding members Adam Aijala (guitar, vocals), Dave Johnston (banjo, vocals), and Ben Kaufmann (bass, vocals) alongside multiinstrumentalist Nick Piccininni (mandolin, banjo, fiddle, vocals), a five-year veteran whose contributions as a singer and instrumentalist
shine throughout the record. Coleman Smith (fiddle) makes his studio debut, adding a vibrant layer that complements the band’s overall dynamic, and Grammy-winning Dobro legend Jerry Douglas brings his signature style to three standout tracks: “Here I Go,” “Wasting Time,” and “Didn’t Go Wrong.”
Featuring original songs inspired by the lived experiences, people, and places that have shaped them, Nowhere Next is a mix of bluegrass, indie rock, and country with soulful, funky grooves that call for a good time. This most recent release balances nostalgia and innovation as it transitions from reflective storytelling to adventurous, genre-defying excursion, paying homage to Yonder’s storied past and breathing new life into two classics from their catalog—“River” and “Didn’t Go Wrong”—reaching back over two decades.
Nowhere Next brings together the unique voices and visions of each member, allowing their individual contributions to resonate with a shared openness. This collective synergy forges a powerful bond within the band, making each track feel both grounded and alive with their connection. Edgy, heartfelt, and full of surprises, Nowhere Next stands out as one of Yonder’s most compelling albums yet, inviting listeners to experience the band at their most vibrant and unrestrained.

“Kandace Springs’s voice is undeniable. It’s one of those generational voices; from the first note, you know it’s special.”
– The Washington Post
Since the release of her debut album Soul Eyes in 2016, Kandace Springs has solidified her position as one of the premiere jazz/soul singers of our time. Her musical journey began when her father brought home an old upright piano that a family friend was throwing out; within weeks Springs had taught herself to play the theme from Soul Train. Suitably impressed, her father arranged for lessons from friend and neighbor Reggie Wooten, of the renowned Wooten Brothers.
Springs spent her early years absorbing both jazz and classical standards by ear and intuition before cutting her teeth as a musician. Fresh out of high school, Springs parked cars for a hotel in downtown Nashville, where she had the opportunity to sing and play piano in the lounge in the evenings. It was during this time that she developed her mastery of the jazz ballad, as shown on her 2024 album Run Your Race.
Described as having “a voice that could melt snow” by her late mentor and collaborator

Prince—who personally invited Springs to perform with him at Paisley Park for the 30th anniversary of the seminal album Purple Rain—the Nashville native has racked up an impressive list of accomplishments. As her live performing career has grown, Springs has found herself in front of audiences around the world, in storied venues such as London’s Royal Albert Hall and at legendary jazz festivals including Newport and Monterey.
Springs has also collaborated with greats like Norah Jones, the Wu-Tang Clan’s Ghostface Killah, drummer/producer Karriem Riggins, Roy Hargrove, Christian McBride, and David Sanborn. A special talent, she embodies the same spirit and soul of the great vocalists of the past on whose shoulders she stands, from legendary vocalists Ella Fitzgerald and Carmen McRae to Nina Simone and Roberta Flack.
Springs now embarks on her most ambitious tribute yet, with the 2025 album release and accompanying tour of Lady in Satin, her recreation of Billie Holiday’s iconic album. Together with the world-renowned 60-piece Orquestra Classica de Espinho, Springs has lovingly reinvented and reimagined the album in its entirety.

“One of the best jazz bands in NY today.” – Forbes
Fueled by the belief that classic jazz feeds the heart and soul, the Hot Sardines are on a mission to make old sounds new again and prove that joyful music can bring people together in a disconnected world.
In the talented hands of this New Yorkbased ensemble, music first made famous decades ago comes alive through brassy horn arrangements, rollicking piano melodies, and vocals from a chanteuse who transports listeners to a di erent era with the mere lilt of her voice. On French Fries & Champagne, the Hot Sardines’ recent album for Universal Music Classics, the jazz collective broadens its already impressive palette, combining covers and originals as they e ortlessly channel New York speakeasies, Parisian cabarets, and New Orleans jazz halls.
Bandleader Evan Palazzo and lead singer Elizabeth Bougerol met in 2007 after they both answered a Craigslist ad about a jazz jam session above a Manhattan noodle shop. The unlikely pair bonded over their shared love for
pianist and organist Fats Waller. Influenced by such greats as Dinah Washington, Louis Armstrong, and Billie Holiday, they began playing open mic nights and small gigs. By 2011, they were headlining Midsummer Night Swing at New York’s Lincoln Center.
The Hot Sardines have been featured at the Newport Jazz Festival and the Montreal Jazz Festival, and they have sold out NYC venues from Joe’s Pub to the Bowery Ballroom and countless tour dates from Chicago to London. The Hot Sardines’ self-titled debut album, named by iTunes as one of the best jazz albums of 2014, spent more than a year on the Billboard Jazz Chart, debuting in the top 10 alongside Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga’s album Love for Sale.
Their most recent project, Banned Jazz, which debuted as part of Carnegie Hall’s Fall of the Weimar Republic Festival in spring 2024, celebrates the unifying power of music and joy as an act of resistance and weaves it into an electrifying live-music experience.
In the hot jazz movement, the Hot Sardines stand apart for the innovation, verve, and sheer joy they bring to music, both new and old.

FRIDAY

“With Ladysmith Black Mambazo, reverence never means sadness or melancholy. Theirs is among the most distinctive and uplifting choral sounds around.”
– NPR
As a boy growing up on a farm during the Apartheid, Ladysmith Black Mambazo founder Joseph Shabalala dreamed of creating the best group of traditional South African singers his country had ever known. Now, 65 years since the group’s origination, Ladysmith Black Mambazo has not only won over all of South Africa but has also become a worldwide phenomenon, receiving more Grammy wins (five) and nominations (19) than any other World Music group in history.
During the dark years of the South African Apartheid, Ladysmith Black Mambazo followed a path of peaceful protest through songs of hope and love. Nelson Mandela said that the group’s music was a powerful message of peace that he listened to while in jail, and, when awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993, Mandela asked the group to join him at the ceremony, calling them “South Africa’s Cultural Ambassadors to the World.”
The group sings a traditional music style called isicathamiya (Is-Cot-A-Mee-Ya), which
was developed by Black workers taken from their homes and families to work in the mines of South Africa. Poorly housed and paid, the mine workers would entertain themselves after a sixday work week by singing songs into the wee hours on Saturday night and Sunday morning. When the miners returned to their homes, this musical tradition returned with them.
In the mid-1980s, American singer-songwriter Paul Simon famously visited South Africa and incorporated the group’s rich harmonies into his renowned Graceland album, a landmark recording considered titular in introducing world music to mainstream audiences. This brought the group to the attention of music lovers all over the world and began a global musical career that shows no sign of ending.
After leading his group for over fifty years, Joseph Shabalala retired in 2014, passing the leadership on to his three sons, Thulani, Sibongiseni, and Thamsanqa Shabalala, who joined their father’s group in 1993. Now, carrying their father’s dream into the future, Shabalala’s sons—along with Msizi Shabalala, Albert Mazibuko, Abednego Mazibuko, Mfanafuthi Dlamini, Pius Shezi, and Sabelo Mthembu—continue the group’s success for all the world to hear.

Generous community support, individual donors, and volunteers make it possible for GPAC’s musical and educational programs to grow and flourish. There are many ways to take part in the life of GPAC. Explore the following opportunities and get involved.
Since 2006, GPAC has reached over 40,000 children through a variety of arts education programs both at GPAC and in the surrounding community. In order to sustain current arts education programs and support new initiatives, the GPAC Arts Education Fund was launched in the spring of 2016. The fund supports GPAC’s education and outreach programs, scholarships for the GPAC Youth Symphony Program, and art grants for Germantown nonprofits.
Please contact Parke Kennedy, Executive Director, at 901-751-7505 or parke@gpacweb.com for information or to make a donation.
The Germantown Performing Arts Guild is an organization of women who share the common interest of promoting the arts in our community. Guild members o er their time, talents, and consistent support for the many varied activities at GPAC. In addition to supporting the arts, the Guild members also support the community; a favorite activity is an annual dinner, prepared by members, to recognize and honor our First Responders. The Guild meets at GPAC the third Monday of each month.
For information about joining this innovative group, contact Roberta Hefley, Guild President, at 404-441-4861

EVENINGS 7:30 PM APRIL 10, APRIL 11

Intimate passion and sweeping social forces infuse every breathtaking moment of Artistic Director Steven McMahon’s version of Shakespeare’s tragic love story. Set to the sublime score by Prokofiev, the exploration of external pressures influencing who we can love and the price we pay for following our hearts shows perfectly how the story of the star-crossed lovers endures still today. This audience favorite, which debuted in 2012 and was last performed in 2019, returns for the very first time to the GPAC stage.

When the National Civil Rights Museum’s Legacy Building reopens in Spring 2026, it will do more than welcome guests into updated exhibitions—it will usher them into an urgent and immersive journey through the unfinished business of civil rights. What once served as the Lorraine Motel’s opposite façade now becomes the movement’s modern-day front line. Don’t just visit the past—help shape what comes next.
From legacy to liberation, our future we build together.
