Food security is among the most basic of human needs, but contemporary issues preventing equitable access to food are extremely complex. According to a 2018 study from the USDA, an estimated 1 in 9 Americans were food insecure, including more than 11 million children. In light of the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, The United Nations World Food Program warns that the number of people experiencing food insecurity globally could double.
Food Justice: Growing a Healthier Community through Art showcases cutting edge works by 15 nationally and internationally recognized artists who address topics such as economic inequality and structural racism, corporate agricultural practices, food waste, climate change, and geopolitics in their practice. The exhibition will highlight innovative artworks rooted in traditional craft materials and techniques, as well as works that explore where craft intersects with painting, sculpture, conceptual, and installation art.
