GRANTS PASS DOWNS OPENS MAY 9TH LOOKING FOR SOMETHING FUN to do with your friends and family this Spring? The Grants Pass Downs Oregon’s premier racing facility located at the Josephine County Fairgrounds opens May 9th. Following the permanent closure of Portland Meadows in 2019, Grants Pass Downs has become the epicenter of Oregon racing, securing a 99-year lease agreement with the Josephine County Fairgrounds. Under the leadership of entrepreneur and Grants Pass native Travis Boersma, Grants Pass Downs has made substantial upgrades throughout the 64-acre facility located west of downtown Grants Pass. “It’s a great sport that we have,” says Boersma. “I think there’s a way to do it in a classy way, and I have a straightforward plan — show some TLC to the horses and the people who care for them. When people love on each other, good things happen.” Grants Pass Downs has played host to many of the top-ranked thoroughbred and quarter horses in the Pacific Northwest. Our racetrack family includes generations of local horsemen who call Grants Pass Downs home, year after year. Our jockey colony continues to grow and includes a sizable contingent of regular female riders. Visit the website at www.gpdowns.com

“We flew past our $250,000 fundraising goal!” The Mt. Ashland Association would like to say thank you to all donors to the Local Mountain Fund for helping them reach this milestone. And a special thanks to the Sid and Karen DeBoer Foundation, which matched all donations dollar-for-dollar up to $125,000! In just three weeks, they received more than $260,000 in gifts from 270 different families and organizations supporting the project. The additional funding will help support further improvements planned at Mt. Ashland in 2022.

Alley Beautification Art Installation

THE OSPREY ALLEY between 5th and 6th streets, next to The Haul restaurant is receiving an artistic facelift. Joseph Johnson, artist and owner of Natural Creations, has constructed 10-foot-tall metal flowers that have been strategically placed amongst the landscape that currently snakes through the paved walkway. Boulders and unique signage complement the finished project. The flower species, all native to Southern Oregon, were chosen by the Committee on Public Art’s subcommittee. The subcommittee met extensively with the artist to ensure the alley would reveal a sense of wonder and something to interact with. There will be sensor lights connected to the flowers that will turn on when people walk through the alley. The sensor lights will not only provide safety but will also create ambiance and interaction for the community to experience at night. The alley project and concept were recommended to the City Council and received approval in May of 2021. The Committee on Public Art works to engage the community and enrich public spaces through the placement of original artwork, creating a unique sense of place, enjoyment, and pride for all.

Kitchen Krafts www.kitchenkraftsbykaitlyn.com (541) 226-6286

KITCHEN KRAFTS BY KAITLYN LLC specializes in creating unique and delicious grazing boards for all events. It started with Kaitlyn Begg just trying to feed her family and keep them happy around one table. It then grew into creating choices for everyone (and their friends and families) to enjoy together while sparking good conversations. For two people or 150 people, with a wide variety of foods and flavors, Kitchen Krafts aims to satisfy every guest in one way or another. They have many options on their menu to feed enough for a small event or larger scale events. Charcuterie spreads bring such a fun yet elegant touch to any event. You can view the full menu on their website at kitchenkraftsbykaitlyn.com.

Our goal here in the kitchen is to bring as many SMILES as possible. I want people to come together and remember how much they enjoy each other while getting lost in conversation and exciting their taste buds — all at the same time. As the company continues to learn and experience so much in the Rogue Valley, they take pride in sourcing almost all items on their boards from local farms and vendors. That is another way they feel they can bring people together and more of the community into your homes. In the last year of making grazing boards for clients, Begg has participated in many unique community events for local schools, EMS, and the wives of GPPD, along with donating proceeds in May to the Blue Dot project for Maternal Mental health awareness, and the Oregonwine experience. Begg also works closely with Rogue Picnics, offering charcuterie for elevated picnics at local wineries and at Lithia Loft in Ashland. One of her favorite things to do is in home workshops. If you and some friends want to learn some tips and tricks on how to up your charcuterie game, schedule your workshop with her now. She has been in the food and beverage industry for almost 13 years and is excited to go even further and help bring people together by combining creativity, food and local love all on one board for everyone to enjoy. gp

food REVIEW

The Wing Ding STYLE: FRANKS REDHOT WINGS The name says it all. Great flavor slightly crispy; our advice is to ask for the wings grilled after fried assuring the best version in our opinion. Not as spicy as you would think even though they are made with Frank’s RedHot in a traditional, non-breaded buffalo style. We tried ours with a side of ranch and it did not disappoint.

STYLE: JACK’S ORIGINAL (MANY FLAVORS AVAILABLE) JD’s offers many flavors of their wings, including an insanely hot version that will require you to sign a waiver before consuming (try at your own risk). Back to the traditional version; it’s served to you crispy without having to make a special request. The sauce is very bold although it’s not carrying the heat of the other versions. Tangy with a little sweet, and very tasty! These are very saucy, so prepare to make a mess, and ask for extra napkins.

STYLE: ALL SAUCES MIXED TOGETHER The Laughing Clam offers a variety of flavors; we got creative one day and asked them to mix all the sauces together, giving them an amazing thick coating with a distinct flavor all the way through. Our advice is to ask for them grilled after fried as the sauce is very thick. It allows the flavors to stick better once grilled. This is a flavor experience you don’t want to miss.

STYLE: TRADITIONAL You may be asking yourself, a Mexican Restaurant? Yes! We were just as surprised when we saw them on the menu, so we tried them. First off, they have no sauce on them, none! They are crispy almost like shake and bake, but so much better. They are perfectly crispy and delicious, A side of homemade buttermilk ranch dressing makes them taste even better. If you’re feeling daring, try dipping in their habanero salsa, which makes the flavors explode. They are unique for sure.

STYLE: DRUMSTICK (BBQ) Wow, these wings are huge! Not your traditional style wings whatsoever. They are large and in charge of bold, yet spicy BBQ flavor. We asked for ours grilled after fried and that seemed to add some very good char flavor and amplified the BBQ flavor. They had a little spicy zing to them. must try. Two is all you need.

Six Reasons Why Exercise Is Better on Weed BY ANTHONY FRANCIOSI

THE WORDS “MARIJUANA” AND “EXERCISE” may not go together upon first glance, but they actually go hand in hand. The marriage of the two is something you may have not considered, but if you’re looking to get ripped, you really should. Listen up. Did you know that weed is actually the best thing you can do for your workout routine? Sure, we know pot has the power to relieve pain and stress, but did you know it can also improve focus, increase metabolism, and make you BETTER at your favorite sports?

22 |

gp MAGAZINE | WINTER 2022

Let’s look at the facts. Some of the most incredible athletes are actually pot smokers. Don’t believe me? This may sound crazy, but think about it. Remember Michael Phelps? He has 22 Olympic medals and, as we all know, he’s a big fan of the reefer. Okay, so he got in trouble and whatever, but seriously: If Phelps can smoke weed and be that great at swimming, wouldn’t you think it might play some part in his athletic achievement? If that’s not reason enough to introduce pot into your fitness regime, I’m really not sure what is.

But, in case you do need a little more convincing, here are six concrete reasons why exercise is better on weed:

1

WEED RAISES YOUR METABOLISM Let’s start with the basics so we can get the ball rolling on an explanation as to why you should be ROLLING a fatty before hitting the gym. Marijuana can help speed up your metabolism so you can actually get a fat-burning boost before hitting the elliptical. According to a study recorded in Men’s Journal: “The compounds THCV and cannabidiol found in marijuana may help raise metabolism, speed fat loss, and lower cholesterol.” So, if you’re looking for a little something extra pre-workout, smoke a little weed. This might seem counterintuitive but, nope, it really does help. Pot smokers are just thinner. As Wellspring notes: “American Journal of Medicine researchers have discovered that pot smokers actually have 16% higher levels of fasting insulin in their bodies than those who abstain from marijuana. In addition, the study indicated that cannabis users have 17% lower insulin resistance levels as well as significantly smaller average waist circumferences than their non-smoking counterparts.” Controlled insulin levels are key to energy and weight-loss. Pot is good for insulin levels which means pot is good for your body.

3

2

WEED REDUCES ANXIETY AND GETS YOU REVVED UP TO WORKOUT

Strangely enough, weed is actually the key ingredient in pumping you up for a workout. After smoking, we feel more heightened and ready to take on the gym by storm. As Stanford Medical School professor Keith Humphreys told Outside Magazine, “We have cannabinoid receptors throughout our brains, and when the THC hits those receptors, it triggers a system that reduces anxiety. That you would feel more aggressive is a natural reaction to the drug.” So, while you might think that weed would chill you out and force you to complacently melt into the couch, forgoing the gym completely, it actually can help you get ready for your routine. It reduces anxiety and pumps you up! Who knew?!

WEED CAN MAKE YOU BETTER AT SPORTS Marijuana can literally make you better at the games you love to play. While participating in activities DRUNK might impair your judgment and compromise your performance, smoking weed will actually IMPROVE your skills. In an interview with Men’s Journal, well-known triathlete Clifford Drusinsky, a Colorado gym owner who actually holds sessions where everyone gets high, said, “marijuana relaxes me and allows me to go into a controlled, meditational place. When I get high, I train smarter and focus on form.” Since you’re relaxed after smoking, you’re automatically more aware of the tasks at hand, which of course is crucial to sports aptitude. According to Business Insider, Outside Magazine correspondent Gordy Megroz said weed actually made him better at skiing. He said that once he got high, he felt really pumped up and was ready to take on all of the slopes. So, there you have it, smoking weed improves sports and science says so. Take that, mom and dad!

GRANTSPASSMAG.COM |

gp MAGAZINE | 23

4

WEED HELPS YOUR MUSCLES RECOVER You know what seriously blows about a super hardcore workout? Being super sore the next couple of days after. Luckily, the answer is even simpler than eating a ton of protein and having a trusty spotter: get high AF. According to Megroz, smoking weed actually helped his muscles recover more quickly than going at it alone. He reported that when he did squats while high, he wouldn’t get as sore. Smoking weed means the end of the muscle pain after workouts. Wouldn’t that make you just want to workout more? Hell yeah.

5 6

WEED KEEPS YOU IN THE ZONE

On top all the aforementioned, magical things weed can do to help improve your fitness strategy, it can also help you stay ultrafocused during your routine. As Wellspring points out, “many longdistance runners admit to using vaporizers or edibles before participating in a marathon, because the cannabis enables them to remove the monotony and stay in a steady rhythmic zone for keeping at a competitive running speed.” So if you’re looking to stay in the zone and improve your longevity like so many top performers (cough, Michael Phelps, cough) just light up! gp

24 |

gp MAGAZINE | WINTER 2022

WEED DOES THE SAME THING AS EXERCISE

STONERS, REJOICE! Here’s another zinger. Weed actually has a similar effect on your body that the gym has. According to Wellspring, marijuana can activate the same areas of the body that exercise can — “As a group of lipids, fats, and cell receptors that THC bind to when smoking weed, the endocannabinoid system plays a prominent role in the neurological system for maintaining homeostasis for overall human health. In short, the endocannabinoid system is responsible for easing our pain, controlling our appetite, relieving our stress, influencing our mood, and even regulating our memory.” So, think about combining exercise AND pot! It’s like a recipe for happiness, wellness, and delight.

THE MAKING OF

By Melinda Sheckells and Charlotte Angin

30 |

gp MAGAZINE | WINTER 2022

WHEN THE FLYING LARK opens in Grants Pass in 2022,

it will be Southern Oregon’s premier dining, entertainment, and equine art destination. As the most significant private

investment in Grants Pass in decades, the land-mark project ushers in revitalizing the regional economy and renewing

the equestrian legacy in one of Oregon’s most beautiful river towns. Grants Pass is one of Oregon’s uncut gems—balancing a deep appreciation of all that is historical with the pleasures

of year-round outdoor activities. Boasting a superb mountain

backdrop, its lush valleys are pleasingly segmented by the “Wild and Scenic” Rogue River. Grants Pass residents delight

in the beautiful climate for which the region is well-known. The storied history of Grants Pass is steeped in the heritage

of horse-human relationships. From pioneers who, alongside their horses, carved a new life in the wilderness to the proud heritage of racing horses on a dirt oval, Grants Pass has had a

lasting love affair with horses. The very heart and soul of The

Flying Lark venue begins with the formation of Grants Pass Downs at the Josephine County Fairgrounds

GRANTSPASSMAG.COM |

gp MAGAZINE | 31

A DREAM TAKES FLIGHT The story begins in 1934 when Grants Pass Downs held its first race meet during the annual county fair. In the 1950s, visionary Don Jackson formed the Southern Oregon Horse Racing Association, and in 1968, the track began to offer parimutuel wagering. In 1969, Jackson acquired a colt named Flying Lark, who would become his prized horse and the inspiration for improvements to the half-mile track and its surrounding land. In the 1980s, the talented Flying Lark piqued the curiosity of the horse racing world, leading the nation in wins for two years, and his identity and stallion pedigree would help put Grants Pass Downs on the map. After his racing days were over, Jackson brought Flying Lark to his ranch in Grants Pass. The horse ultimately would become one of Oregon’s most famous stallions. Jackson’s undying commitment to cultivating a racing legacy in Southern Oregon created the foundation for Grants Pass Downs’ present and future success. Carrying that torch forward, Grants Pass native Travis Boersma, co-founder and Executive Chairman at Dutch Bros Coffee, writes the next chapter. Following the closure of Portland Meadows in 2018, Boersma assumed the state’s only commercial horse racing license. Forming TMB Racing, LLC in 2019, Boersma has made a significant investment in updating and enhancing the facilities and amenities at Grants Pass Downs.

BY THE NUMBERS AND MORE The Flying Lark venue has the unique opportunity to create a legacy, putting Grants Pass and the Josephine County Fairgrounds on the map as a year-round destination. Together with Grants Pass Downs, they will help restore the horse racing industry in the Pacific Northwest. The beneficiaries of this endeavor include horse owners, trainers, veterinarians, jockeys, and a wide range of vendors and suppliers across Oregon. As a result, there is a positive cycle of spending and impact between gaming and horse racing. Boersma and his team set out to beautify Grants Pass Downs with the addition of a lush green infield (used for youth soccer,) landscaping, barns, and various upgrades to the vintage grandstand. Over the past two years, 2,000 tons of new dirt was added to the track, making the surface one of the safest in the industry. In addition, a new safety rail was repurposed from the Los Angeles County fairgrounds and installed at the facility. Amenities, however, don’t overshadow the people whose lives have been touched.

LEFT: An artist’s rendering of The Flying Lark BELOW: Artist Trevor O’Tool creating his equine art piece for the Wonder Walk BOTTOM: Don Jackson and The Flying Lark

Meet Hector Magallanes, who worked a 40 hour a week job and trained horses another 40. Sleep was a luxury he couldn’t afford if he wanted to live his dream and still feed his family. After surviving a near-fatal car accident, he quit his job and started a new journey as a trainer. Magallanes went to California to try his luck running against some of the best quarter horses in the country. Pedaling to the Next Level Tips on turning your next mountain bike outing into an adventure

YOU’VE BEEN RIDING ALL YEAR, and your standard trail has gotten routine. You’ve decided it’s time to push yourself to the next level. There are two dimensions you can explore when moving from novice to advanced riding: duration and technical ability. DURATION Duration, which can mean either actual mileage or time spent on the bike, is the easiest dimension to push through. Most mountain bikers measure their rides in terms of hours instead of miles. This is because a 20-mile ride uphill is a lot harder than 20 miles on the flats. Consuming plenty of food is essential to riding longer. Stick with roughly the same food you used for your shorter rides, just make sure you eat often. Maintaining glycogen

levels during exercise is key. When they drop off, you’ll “bonk,” or run out of energy as it is called. Once you have bonked, it is hard to return to normal. Dehydration can drastically limit your endurance. When you get dehydrated, you can lose power and endurance. As with food, drink a lot of fluids, and often. The rule of thumb is that if you are thirsty, you already are dehydrated. Most serious mountain bikers use a back-mounted hydration system (BMHS), which is essentially a backpack containing a water reservoir and long drinking tube. The main advantage of a BMHS, such as the Camelbak Mule, is the ability to carry as much as three liters with ease. It is not uncommon to consume three liters during a three- or four-hour ride. Riders using a BMHS tend to drink more, and more often, than those not using a BMHS. As a result, they tend to ride longer.

A BMHS also removes weight from your bike, which will help when you tackle the next dimension of improvementtechnical riding. Some riders also carry an extra bottle for squirting on their heads when they get hot. This simple trick is surprisingly refreshing when you’re on the fly. TECHNICAL ABILITY Increasing your technical ability on a bike is a bit harder, and potentially more dangerous, than increasing the duration of the ride. There are a number of books on riding technique that can help with the basics, but the best way to get better is to practice. Practice your bikehandling skills during your normal commute or on the way to the store. Hit that curb or go off that little ledge. The only way you’re going to get better is to do it. Other helpful hints include practicing at the local park, where you can simulate sharp corners and switchbacks with road cones, or getting a stick and a few bricks to practice bunny-hopping those pesky logs. The stick will stay if you clear it, and you won’t be risking precious skin if you don’t. Another trick for increasing your bike-handling skills is to try to pick up a water bottle on the ground while riding. This will help with your balance on the bike, which is essential for negotiating those tight and demanding trails. Once you have practiced and are ready to implement some of your newfound skills, pick a trail that has short sections that you can repeat if you don’t clear them clean. The object is to go through without “dabbing,” or touching a foot or other body part to the ground. You are probably going to fall a few times, so pick a section that looks relatively safe. Scout out a path through it first. Then go for it! Have a riding partner spot you on the hard sections. The spotter won’t keep the rider from hitting the ground. The object is to direct the fall toward a safe area. It is a good idea to designate this safe area with your partner before attempting it. It is also a good idea to practice spotting before you hit the trail. It is not an easy thing to do, but when done right it can reduce the risk of injury and the fear factor. Speaking of fear, mental conditioning is an often overlooked element of riding on both longer and more technically demanding routes. Familiarity with the type of terrain expected on the ride helps alleviate any apprehension. The best advice is to stay positive and focused. Wheels down, head up and have fun. gp

Pole Fitness

A New Variety of Dancing Art and Fitness is Introduced to Rogue Valley IT IS OBVIOUS to a long-term resident of the Rogue Valley, that our small town of Grants Pass has been significantly growing. Recently, we have not only seen an expansion on new families, but new businesses as well. With the increase of a younger demographic comes the delightful abundance of unique and artistic businesses to add to our, already, cultured small town. One new business in particular has caught the attention of our local women residents, and has been making quite the positive impact on their personal lives. SkyDance Pole Fitness opened their doors in March of 2020, amidst the pandemic. But that hasn’t stopped them from fulfilling their purpose. Women of all ages, sizes, and walks of life have been taking the leap into a new fitness regimen, and marking their calendars for the next pole class. So, what is SkyDance Pole Fitness, and what are they offering? SkyDance Pole Fitness is a local dance studio, offering a tiered curriculum and group classes in pole fitness. From Intro up to Advanced — no existing skills required. SkyDance will train you from start to finish. Pole Fitness is a unique and specialty method of training your body that involves strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, body knowledge, and a sense of timing and rhythm. Along with strength training, it’s also great for your cardiovascular system. Pole Fitness is acrobatic and dance oriented, and can be compared to sports like swimming or tennis. In one hour, athletes can burn 280 calories and confirmed a rate of perceived exertion (RPE) of 6.3 (on a scale from 1 to 10) according to a 2019 study analyzing pole dancing for fitness. Pole Fitness is considered a part of aerial gymnastics, which also includes silks, trapeze and lyra. Along with that, pole fitness has been considered for inclusion in the Olympics in the near future. Long story short, Pole Fitness is a great workout, and most of all, it is FUN! Each class feels like dancing, and you are more motivated to show up for a workout when it doesn’t feel like a workout. What SkyDance is offering is an opportunity to harness your fire, and take back your confidence and build your self love through your accomplishments. You will be challenged, broken down, and enhanced.

“It isn’t just about getting rid of extra fat, toning up or cutting in abs,” said owner Kelsie Beaudin. “It’s about loving your body as you are, and acknowledging your very own astonishing qualities.” Beaudin says the benefits of pole fitness go way beyond the toning of your body. The benefits of having a loving and supportive community, especially in today’s times, will reflect on who you are as a person. With the obvious benefit of strength, flexibility and mobility, members also gain body awareness (recognizing how you move your body through space, including balance), rhythm and elegance, work ethic (pole fitness is very demanding, requiring dedication and consistency to improve), and self confidence.

“It isn’t just about getting rid of extra fat, toning up or cutting in abs... It’s about loving your body as you are, and acknowledging your very own astonishing qualities.”

SkyDance’s instructor group consists of five women, trained and certified in an accredited pole fitness program (X-PERT) on top of years of prior pole dance experience. “We bring the skill and training, you bring the community,” Beaudin says. “I originally opened up this space to designate a spot for us to train, and share the wonderful and rewarding benefits of the sport. But my studio soon became much more than that. Our community is what keeps us here. What it turned into is smiling faces greeting you at the door, the entire class cheering you on when you finally nail that tough trick, staying late after class to talk about our struggles, and everyone getting told happy birthday and Merry Christmas, etc. Our studio is a judgment-free zone, and includes women of every demographic. SkyDance is a place for us to take a break and get away. Pole dancing is a skill that brings you in, but our community is what keeps you here.” SkyDance is slowly making a name for itself in our small community. You may see staff members perform at local events, or hosting workshops at their dance studio. With the knowledge of all the benefits of this sport, and pole fitness being a growing trend, we are so happy to have an outlet in our small town of Grants Pass. They welcome you to reach out, or pop in for an intro class if you are curious about pole fitness. gp

tee TIME

Meet Our Golf Pro I PICKED UP GOLF when I was five years old. I was influenced greatly in part by my father. It runs in the family and even my grandfather is an avid golfer. For me, the most important thing about the game is that it is first something enjoyable. Not that it doesn’t come with its own challenges, because it does put your patience to the test, but it can be an experience that you crave and makes you feel good. As a golf instructor, I value communication and use that to build a relationship with my clients. To make the lessons enjoyable there needs to be a connection. I value learning from mistakes that happen along the way and try to apply this philosophy in each lesson. For example, a bad shot can be bad, but a lot of good things can manifest from it. It’s all about perspective. I recognize that in anything you dedicate yourself to or invest your time into, there will always be learning curves. Ben Hogan once said golf is “20 percent talent and 80 percent management.” The idea of a golf lesson is to make that 50-yard miss that goes left and right, into a 20-yard miss. You’ll hit more greens and be closer to the hole to lower your scores. Nobody has ever perfected this sport, so having real expectations is something I believe everyone needs. As we progress through lessons, I like to focus on my students’ strengths. Where our attention goes, energy flows — so if the focus is on the strengths, we have somewhere to continue building from. I’ve played golf for more than 20 years and feel like I still improve every year. The beauty of this game is there is not one single way to play it. The goal is to just get the ball into the hole in the least number of strokes. Your approach to the game is everything. You can use your imagination and your own personal experience to your advantage — it is a blank canvas each time you play, and you are the creator.

Score!

The short game is often overlooked, but perfecting chip and pitch shots can reduce scores by eight to 14 strokes DURING THE COURSE of a normal golf outing, the average golfer will find the ball lying less than 120 yards from the pin on numerous occasions. For an amateur golfer, it may happen on every hole. The proper use of the short irons — 9-iron, pitching wedge, sand wedge and lob wedge — can lead to lower scores. That is why the short irons are often referred to as “scoring clubs.” As important as the short game is, very few individuals practice this aspect of the game. Yet, the short irons may be one of the simplest parts of the game to master. The shorter shaft makes them relatively easy to swing. Plus, you can practice pitch and chip shots in your backyard, or at a nearby park. Instead, when individuals warm up at a practice range they become obsessed with the driver and often ignore the short irons altogether. Each short-game shot requires a slightly different swing, yet the object is the same — hit the ball as close to the pin as possible. The short game is all about consistency. Practice, practice, practice.

TRY THE FOLLOWING TIPS FOR A MORE EFFECTIVE SHORT GAME

CHIP The two primary short-game shots are the chip and pitch: CHIP: Is a low-trajectory shot that maximizes distance traveled on the ground yet minimizes loft. A chip shot increases topspin. The object is to roll the ball, almost like a putt. PITCH: A higher trajectory shot that maximizes loft yet minimizes distance on the ground. A pitch shot increases the backspin. The object is to drop the ball on the green with little roll.

Use a narrow stance with 80 percent of the body’s weight on the

front foot. The majority of the weight should remain over the front foot throughout the swing.

• •

The stance should be slightly open to the target.

The ball should be placed inside the back foot. The handle of

the club is at a slight angle in front of the ball, called “de-lofting” the club.

• • • • • •

Use a short backswing and follow-through. The clubhead should never get above the waist.

The wrists should be kept firm. Probably the most common mistake of amateurs is flipping the wrists.

On the downswing, the hands should stay in front of the club. Strike the ball with a descending blow.

After impact, the follow through is shortened and the path of the club should remain low.

Change the club to change the distance. Use a 7-iron through a

loft wedge for the chip shot. The lower the loft on the club, the farther the ball rolls on the ground. A lower lofted club reduces

the angle of trajectory and backspin imparted to the ball. Practice your ranges.

PITCH

• • • •

Pitches generally require more backswing and follow-though, than a chip.

A pitch shot requires a slightly wider stance than a chip shot, approximately 8 to 10 inches.

Choke up the handle. Keep the forearms and shoulders relaxed.

Seventy percent of the body weight should be placed over the

front foot. Too much weight placed on the back foot causes you to get under the ball.

• • • • • •

The stance is slightly open and the ball should be placed in the middle of the stance.

The length of the backswing will determine the distance of the shot. The wrists should hinge, but not bend. Breaking the wrists will pull the club off target and throw off your timing throughout.

On the downswing, allow gravity to accelerate the clubhead gradually.

Strike the ball with a descending blow, this creates loft and backspin. Never scoop the ball.

After impact, the club should swing through. The swing tempo

should remain constant. Do not quit on the shot. The club should travel the same distance on the follow-through as the backswing.

There are several backswing combinations — quarter, half, threequarter and full — that determine the length of a pitch shot. Learn how far each travels. gp

Scoring Thrifty Finds

How to Source Deals for Home Staging and Design Projects

DWELL HOUSE is a full service staging and design company located in the heart of downtown Grants Pass. We believe good design in real estate has the power to create an emotional connection between people and spaces. Part of our styling process is finding pre-loved furniture and home decor through Facebook Marketplace, thrift stores, and antique markets. As a home stager and inventory buyer, I am fortunate I get to apply my thrifty know-how to my job. As a teen in the mid 90’s, I can wholeheartedly admit that the grunge era fueled my first thrift store ventures. My first memorable quest was for the ubiquitous “perfect flannel.” Three thrift stores into the hunt, I finally found the one — a men’s small, red plaid button down that was obviously more than slightly used. It had probably been some dude’s work shirt for a few years until it came into my life, but now it was mine! I beamed with unfettered satisfaction and first-dayof-school fashionista daydreams. Pairing this flannel with my size 8 Docs, I could easily channel Aerosmith’s “Cryin’” video and give Ms. Silverstone a run for her money. I left the store, head held high, took a sip from my blackberry Clearly Canadian and popped Vitology into the CD player as I sped off with my new found friends in tow. And I have been a thrift-store junky for ever after. Fast forward to present day and I can tell you that thrifting has come a long way since my high school days. The images of crunchy, picked-over items are fading and thrifting is now considered a savvy way to shop for trendy and vintage items. So if you’re looking for new items for your own home or you’re needing to find some inexpensive items to stage your home for sale, I am offering TEN TIPS on setting your mindset to purchase some sweet finds!

1

Avoid the notion that thrifting = used up and beaten down

Remember that people give away things for different reasons. Think about that decor piece your coworker or friend gave you that — while well intentioned — just didn’t flow with your decor vibe. What did you do with it? You took it to Goodwill — right? And for someone else, that item that you literally never used became a score for a fraction of the original price. Those diamonds in the rough are the stars of the show and, honestly, the fuel to my thrifting fire. 44 |

The two neutral colored mugs on the top shelf were just 79 cents each!

ABOVE: We added shelving, displays and tons of accessories to a corner nook in the kitchen to add a comfy feeling with on trend items. Several of the items were found at yard sales and thrift stores in the area. RIGHT: These are sourced items from second hand stores. The pineapple, pear and apple were all found for under $6 for staging inventory.

2

Take a look at what’s on trend, especially if you are staging your home to sell

Before heading out to shop, peruse store websites that line up with your decor inspiration. These days we love getting ideas from West Elm, Urban Outfitters, Serena and Lilly, Lulu and Georgia, Homegoods and Potterybarn just to name a few. Get those images fresh in your mind so that when you’re out, you’ll recognize the current style when you see it.

The images of crunchy, picked-over items are fading and thrifting is now considered a savvy way to shop for trendy and vintage items.

4

Look (and smell) everything over several times

I usually look at something up and down, back and forth and all over, and if I like it, I put it in my cart. Before going up to the register though, I go through everything AGAIN to make sure I didn’t miss any imperfections that will prevent the sale. For furniture, open and close drawers and cabinets to check for proper functioning and imperfections inside. And any hint of unpleasant odor may offend and ultimately dissuade someone from showing interest in your home.

5

Give yourself time to do a little digging

I don’t bring my husband thrifting with me for two reasons — one, he gets bored and antsy; two, I feel rushed and ultimately annoyed. Digging is where the real gems can be found and where hard core thrifters like myself have moments of Earthly zen. Ommmm….

3

Make a list of items you are looking for

You can keep this list on a notepad or on your phone for easy access. Remember to record any specific measurements of frames sizes, spaces to fill, space limitations, etc. It’s also a good idea to take some pictures of your space that you’re decorating so that you don’t have to rely entirely on memory. Even professional designers can’t keep all the visual details of a space solely and completely in their minds. Keeping some photos of inspirational items handy is a good idea as well, kind of like an instant mood board, when you’re in the store bewildered by the bevy of choices. They will give you solid guidance when you don’t know if an item will work just right. Lastly, keep a measuring tape in your car or purse. Don’t miss out on the perfect piece because you just didn’t know if it would fit — a true thrift blunder.

6

Go as often as possible

Even if you just pop in to see what’s new, most bigger or popular thrift stores are constantly bringing in new merch. While I was shopping the other day, they kept bringing stuff on to the sales floor non-stop. Find your favorite stores and stop in when passing by, even if you have only a few minutes. You just might find your bargain item (and at half price to boot!)

7

Decide what needs to be pristine and what can have a few “love blemishes”

For home staging purposes, sometimes a little blemish is okay. For items like accessories for bookcases, a small blemish can be placed out of view or even fixed with some paint or a marker. Even thrifted tables don’t have to be absolutely perfect because you will probably be putting things on top of them anyways. The exception is fabrics — they can hold smells for a long time (refer back to rule #4).

Remember: at yard and estate sales YOU CAN HAGGLE!

8

ind out the store’s refund policy and save F your receipts

At the Goodwill in our town you can return items you purchased within 7 days (check with your local GW to see if the policies are the same). If you paid with debit or credit card you can get a full refund to the card. If you paid cash, you can only get store credit. Check in to these options wherever you are if it will make a big difference to you.

9

Scope out yard sales and estate sales on your local Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist

Map them out, check out the start times noting that estate sales often start on Thursday and sometimes on Wednesday. The early bird gets the most selection: The late bird gets the half-off deals. And remember: at yard and estate sales YOU CAN HAGGLE! If it’s the last day of a sale, go low with your offers. By this time, most people’s first priority is to just get rid of stuff — they don’t want to haul all of this back inside or to the secondhand store. Gather all the things you want first and then make a low, one price offer for everything in your lot. They will usually take your first offer — and happily at that! 10

$10 ABOVE: I found this black geometric side table at a thrift store for a steal at ten bucks! Looking on Wayfair they have a very similar version but for $128 — what a savings! I did have to pull out my black Sharpie in a few places on the edges of this table. Can you tell where I had to touch up? No you can’t — and neither could potential buyers or online viewers.

Keep an open mind and expand your creativity

After all of the accolades of thrifting are bestowed, it’s still a game of sifting through items to find a good deal and sometimes that means putting a little love and work into restoring your found treasure. Sometimes just a little rubbing alcohol, paint, or a good marker will fix those blemishes. I certainly hope this article gives you some thrifting inspiration and helpful tips for wading through the vast variety of decor items you’ll be sure to find when out on your own thrift-ventures! gp

Unless you really need to knock yourself out – then eat the entire candy. The taste is clean and creamy with little to no cannabis taste that is sure to satisfy.
