from the publisher Opiate addiction versus marijuana addiction OH, WAIT … THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS “MARIJUANA ADDICTION.” A former United States Marine, I have witnessed first-hand the addiction to prescription painkillers and been addicted to these pharmaceuticals, myself. Veterans Affairs literally would hand us painkillers like M&Ms … not so much since they recognized the damage they caused. So why won’t the feds (aka the VA) allow cannabis as an alternative? They won’t even recognize the benefits that cannabis has over, let’s say, Percocet. In the United States, 46 people die each day from opiate overdoses, and that number is growing weekly at an alarming rate. Could marijuana be what’s missing from addicts’ recovery, or could marijuana be the solution to replace opiates? A 2014 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association connected access to medical cannabis with significantly lower opioid-overdose mortality rates at the state level. States with medical-marijuana laws showed, on average, a 25-percent lower annual rate of death from opioid overdose compared with states lacking medical-marijuana laws. While addiction specialists have characterized switching from opiates to marijuana as “changing seats on the Titanic,” users’ success stories suggest otherwise. Fact: The pharmaceutical companies control the opiate distribution throughout this country. Fact: There is more money to be made in opiate-addiction and recovery clinics than there is from any other drug-recovery program. More people are addicted to opiates than cocaine! So can it be said that, in turn, the government literally is controlled by the pharmaceutical companies and held at bay by this …? It’s really all about money and control. If the federal government and the pharmacy companies could figure out how to arrange, control, monitor and make money off cannabis, in my opinion, their efforts would end the opiate epidemic almost overnight. Here is how: They could restrict opiate distribution, as well as offer cannabis as an alternative for pain, thus putting fewer opiates into circulation across the United States. Americans have been waiting months for life to return to normal, and the successful rollout of the COVID vaccine has many optimistic for the return of music festivals and concerts this summer. Music fans should celebrate, as dozens of music tours have been announced for summer 2021, with some even extending through parts of 2022. Concert goers should be aware that different cities, states and venues will have varying social distancing and mask requirements, and those are likely subject to change as time goes on (and as more people get vaccinated). Full Spectrum Vs

Because full spectrum products contain compounds in addition to CBD, such as THC, they may maximize the entourage effect If you’ve shopped for CBD products recently, then you’ve likely come across the terms full spectrum CBD and broad spectrum CBD. What does that mean? There are basically three different types of cannabinoid spectrum choices: full spectrum CBD, broad spectrum CBD, and CBD isolate. Each type has unique benefits, so you should be aware of these before you buy. Although much of the research into CBD is still in its early stages, many people are eager to try CBD products. Anecdotal evidence suggests that some people have found CBD helpful in relieving ailments such as anxiety and pain. Cannabis synthesizes more than 100 phytocannabinoids, with CBD and THC being two of the most well-recognized cannabinoids from the plant. Each spectrum identifies various other components that work synergistically with the CBD molecules, enhancing the overall benefits. Whether CBD is full spectrum or broad spectrum depends on how it’s processed after its extraction. When raw hemp goes through the extraction process, cannabinoids, flavonoids, and terpenes are stripped from the plant and then infused into a carrier oil; however, the cannabinoid profile of the CBD oil may be different based on the strain of cannabis used during the process.

Hemp-based extracts, for example, will usually contain less than 0.3 percent THC — making them non-intoxicating and retaining high amounts of CBD. Other times, cannabis extracts are pulled from strains that have an equal CBD-to-THC ratio or THC content that’s higher than 0.3 percent. There are three main ways to extract CBD from the cannabis plant. These are: • Carbon dioxide extraction: This method uses CO2 to separate CBD oil from the cannabis plant. It is a popular extraction method for CBD products and is capable of successfully producing high concentration CBD. • Steam distillation: With this method, steam helps separate the oil from the plant material. It is a popular method for extracting essential plant oils, but it is not as effective as the CO2 method. • Solvent extraction: Although this method is effective if solvents are left behind, the process does pose a potential health risk. Solvent extraction can also affect the flavor of the extract. • Lipid extraction: This process is gaining popularity, as some companies are now trying to avoid CO2 and solvents. After extraction, the resulting CBD oil is considered full spectrum. Hemp-sourced CBD will have a THC concentration of 0.3% or less. The extract must go through a cooling and purification process to obtain a CBD isolate product. Further processing leaves behind a crystalline isolate, or CBD crystals.

What CBD manufacturers do with the extracted cannabinoids will determine whether the final product is full spectrum or broad spectrum — and in some cases, just a CBD isolate. Here’s what each cannabis spectrum means:

What is Full Spectrum CBD? Full spectrum CBD means that it uses all of the phytochemicals found in Cannabis sativa; this includes cannabidiol along with terpenes, essential oils, and other cannabinoids, including THC. The THC content, however, can still be under 0.3 percent. Full spectrum CBD typically allows consumers to experience the “entourage effect,” which requires the combination of whole-plant cannabinoids and additional terpenes, and it is quite different from a CBD product that uses CBD isolates only. But that doesn’t mean that all full-spectrum products will make you feel intoxicated. Small doses of lower potency products are unlikely to produce any euphoric effects. Finally, since fullspectrum products contain THC, you may run a higher risk of testing positive should you take a drug test. If you don’t mind a bit of THC inside your CBD oil, or you live in a state that legalizes cannabis for adult use, then full spectrum CBD might be your preferred choice. Other than CBD, full spectrum extracts will contain additional cannabinoids, including: • Cannabinol (CBN): a cannabinoid made from oxidized THC. The longer raw cannabis matures, the more CBN it will create from THC. It’s known for its relaxing qualities. • Cannabigerol (CBG): a non-intoxicating cannabinoid produced from cannabigerolic acid during decarboxylation. • Cannabidivarin (CBDV): a minor cannabinoid with a molecular structure similar to that of CBD. • Cannabidiol acid (CBDA): the 2-carboxylic acid form of CBD and an essential ingredient found in raw cannabis. • Cannabichromene (CBC): a cannabinoid that particularly comes from tropical-region cannabis; it is useful for a variety of beneficial reactions. With full spectrum CBD, the added terpenes and cannabinoids can affect cannabinoid receptors — either blocking or allowing other cannabinoid molecules to bind or communicate with the connectors.

CBD isolates are the most concentrated form of CBD.

What is CBD Isolate? A CBD isolate means pure CBD: it contains no other cannabinoids, terpenes, or flavonoids. And even though pure CBD oil uses cannabidiol isolates exclusively, its extraction requires a great deal of additional work. The extracting process of raw hemp materials pulls out all of the active ingredients inside hemp, along with its terpenes and flavonoids. The extraction to isolate CBD from all the other cannabinoid compounds goes further than usual to ensure safe human consumption. CBD isolates are the most concentrated form of CBD. A single isolate typically is up to 90 percent CBD, making it potent in CBD content but not necessarily having more benefits or better results. There’s no substantial risk of an intoxicating high or euphoria with pure CBD oil, and it’s unlikely to register a positive drug test reading. CBD isolates are ideal for cooking or mixing with food and beverages. But because CBD oil containing only CBD isolates doesn’t utilize the full hemp plant, it can’t offer the more extensive benefits created from the entourage effect.

What is Broad Spectrum CBD? Like full spectrum, CBD oil labeled broad spectrum also uses cannabidiol with all the other compounds found in hemp. However, there’s one active ingredient that gets removed after the extraction process: THC. Broad spectrum CBD retains several of the different cannabinoids, such as CBN and CBG. And because broad spectrum also uses additional terpenes and flavonoids, it can generate some entourage effect without THC. So you may decide to use broad spectrum CBD if you’re looking for wholeplant benefits without any THC content or you live in an area in the U.S. with stricter cannabis laws. It uses compounds from the whole hemp plant minus the THC, so it’s also less likely to cause any false positive drug readings.

One potential plus of broad-spectrum CBD is that you keep a clear mind — no THC means no “high” feeling. A drawback, though, is that CBD sans THC may not be quite as effective as the two together. More research is needed, but the entourage effect suggests they may work best together. Hemp-derived CBD products with less than 0.3% THC are legal federally but still illegal under some state laws. Cannabis-derived CBD products, on the other hand, are illegal federally but legal under some state laws. Check local legislation, especially when traveling. Also, keep in mind that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have not approved nonprescription CBD products, which may be inaccurately labeled. The choice between broad spectrum and full spectrum CBD should be determined by which one better meets your needs. An individual’s physiology, lifestyle, and health history will influence how their body reacts to each spectrum.

Like CBD isolate, broad spectrum has no risk of any psychoactive effects, but like full spectrum CBD, it also offers benefits from the entourage effect. It may also provide greater benefits than just CBD isolates.

POT-PEANUT BUTTER It’s easy to scale up this recipe by simply using an additional 1/4 cup peanut butter for each 1/2 gram of extra marijuana. INGREDIENTS • 2 grams marijuana from your local dispensary • 1 cup peanut butter (may substitute almond or cashew butter) DIRECTIONS: 1 | Preheat oven to 325 F. 2 | Remove and discard the marijuana’s seeds and stems; grind up marijuana as ﬁ nely as possible. A coffee grinder works really well! 3 | Divide about .5 g marijuana among wells of a mini mufﬁ n tin. Add about ¼ cup of the peanut butter to each well. Using a spoon directly in pan, mix well. 4 | Cover pan with aluminum foil and bake in preheated oven for 20 minutes. 5 | Remove from oven and use at once or let cool. 6 | Once cooled, peanut butter will keep for a few months in the refrigerator.

WEED MAC ’N CHEESE INGREDIENTS • ½ pound elbow macaroni or shells • 5 tablespoons cannabis butter • ½ cup all-purpose fl our • 2 ½ to 3 cups milk, warm • 4 ounces smoked mozzarella, grated (1 cup) • 8 ounces medium cheddar, grated (2 cups) • 1 teaspoon kosher salt, plus more for pasta water • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika • ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg • 1 cup breadcrumbs • 1 tablespoon canola oil, (using cannabis-oil is optional) • 2 ounces sharp cheddar, grated (½ cup) DIRECTIONS: 1 | Heat oven to 375 F. 2 | Fill a large pot with water and at least 1 tablespoon salt. Bring to a boil, add the macaroni and cook according to package directions Drain well. 3 | In a small saucepan, melt the cannabis butter. Add the fl our and cook, whisking continuously, for 5 minutes. Add the warm milk and cook for a minute or 2 more, until thickened and smooth. Add the mozzarella and medium cheddar cheeses, the salt, paprika, pepper and nutmeg. Add cooked macaroni; stir well. Pour into 6 to 8 buttered ramekins. 4 | In a small bowl, combine the canola oil with the breadcrumbs and sharp cheddar. Sprinkle on top of fi lled ramekins. Bake in preheated oven for 25 to 35 minutes or until sauce is bubbly and macaroni is browned on top.
