Building from one generation to the next
Family excavation business KKLA Contractors grows by forming solid relationships with clients in and around the Portland metro area
Moving dirt has always been a part of Kirk Wardius’ life. During summers when he was growing up, he worked with his father, who was in the excavation industry.
“I knew this is what I wanted to do from a young age,” said Kirk. “I also knew that I wanted to work for myself. In 2002, my wife, Kim, and I took the chance and started KKLA Contractors. Since then, we have been doing practically anything associated with earthwork and site preparation.”
During KKLA Contractors’ early days, Kirk worked the field, and Kim handled bookkeeping. As the company grew, Kim transitioned out of the business, but their sons, Louden and Alyas, came on board. Louden oversees estimating and office management, and Alyas is a field superintendent.
The four family members’ first names make up the company moniker, KKLA.
“Like me, they grew up in this, and we’re proud that they decided to join the business full time when they got out of school,” shared Kirk. “They have taken on a lot of responsibility and helped the company grow.”
Alyas, who started full time about 10 years ago, added, “I don’t think we saw ourselves doing anything else. We loved going out to the jobs with Dad growing up, and as soon as we were old enough to work, we were helping out. Louden and I are both overseeing jobs, and Dad kind of floats between projects and works in the office on estimates and bids. It’s awesome being a part of a family business where everybody knows everybody, and nobody feels like a number.”

Full site prep
Based in Clackamas, Ore., KKLA Contractors started out doing much smaller projects. Through the years, the Wardiuses built the business by developing solid relationships with general contractors and developers in and around the Portland area, and now KKLA Contractors has additional locations in Ridgefield, Wash., and Vancouver, Wash. With a staff of about 20 employees, it usually has one or two jobs going on at once and completes multiple projects annually that are typically in the $6 million to $8 million range, mainly within a 100-mile radius of Clackamas.
“Our focus is on site development packages that include everything from any needed demolition and tree removal to finish grade.”
“Our focus is on site development packages that include everything from any needed demolition and tree removal to finish grade,” explained Louden, who joined the business full time in 2021. “We handle the stripping, mass excavation, cut and fill, underground utility installation, and detention pond construction. We work with the concrete contractors to do structural excavation building foundations, cut subgrade for landscapers and place rock on the subgrade for paving companies. If we take down trees, and the project calls for it, we will also bring in a grinder
and turn them into mulch. If it has to do with earthmoving, we handle it.”
Louden continued, “On the public works side, we’ve developed a niche of doing water lines. We have one in Beaverton that’s about 2,500 feet, and we recently came off one in Hubbard that was 3,400 feet. On the private side, subdivisions are mainly what we work on.”
Alyas added, “Every day is different. One day we’re laying pipe, and the next we’re digging footings, then blading roads. It’s forever changing, and I think that’s what we really like about this type of work.”
Saving with IMC
KKLA Contractors uses its Komatsu PC360LCi-11 intelligent machine control (IMC) excavator with integrated GPS grade control to dig trenches, mass excavate, set pipe and install trench boxes on all types of projects.
“When we’re mainlining on utilities, the intelligent excavator is phenomenal because the operator always knows where they are in relation to the target elevation; once they get there, the machine won’t let them dig any deeper,” stated Kirk. “That keeps you from overcutting and putting in expensive fill material, so there is little to no overage on bedding material. The grade is exactly where it needs to be, and you don’t have to have someone with a grade rod constantly checking.
In addition to utilities, excavators allow one operator to dig out a foundation and do structural excavation for a building by themselves.”
KKLA Contractors began using IMC machines about five years ago when it purchased a D51PXi-24 dozer for tasks such as stripping to finish grade, and the company has seen significant savings in time, material and labor costs.

There were not hubs or string lining. That’s a huge amount of time saved.”
In addition to GPS grade control IMC machines, KKLA Contractors uses Komatsu PC238USLC-11 and PC138USLC-11 tight tail swing excavators.
“We purchased the tight tail swing excavators for public works jobs because we are in the street a lot, and there isn’t a large counterweight, so we

don’t have to worry about swinging into traffic,” noted Kirk. “We can spin 360 degrees within the width of the tracks, so that’s a huge asset, as is the fact that we can use them in open areas to dig and get good production.”

KKLA Contractors also runs a standard Komatsu PC210LC excavator, a Komatsu WA270 wheel loader and a Dynapac CA2500 roller that can be used with a smooth or padfoot drum. Like the IMC and tight tail swing machines, all were purchased from Modern Machinery with the help of Territory Manager Mike Stepan.

Potential for added growth
Louden said implementing GPS, along with solid leadership by Kirk, has coincided with growth for KKLA Contractors. Kirk indicated that with Louden and Alyas in leadership roles, there is added potential to expand.

“I see us probably doubling in size in the next few years now that they are involved at the level they are,” remarked Kirk. “Before, it was just me. Now, we can spread our wings, and we have key personnel that we all trust. We are always looking ahead. That includes looking at other markets such as roadwork and bore pits for underground micro tunneling. We think the future is very bright.”
Louden added, “We have a small concrete division now that’s done some slabs and paving on the water line projects. We have some guys who worked for us with paving experience, so we’re looking into that as a potential growth area.” ■

Komatsu’s new versatile WA475-11 and WA485-11 wheel loader models are designed to move material efficiently and effectively, helping to increase productivity while providing improved operator comfort and easy maintenance. Sharp focus has been put on reducing total cost of ownership (TCO).

The WA485-11 offers up to 12% lower fuel consumption, 21% more engine power and 13% faster climbing speed than its predecessor, the WA480-8. The WA475-11 provides up to 7% lower fuel consumption, 18% higher engine power and 40% greater climbing speed than the WA475-10.
Both loaders now include Komatsu Hydraulic Mechanical Transmission (KHMT) engineered
for improved fuel efficiency and productivity. Operators will appreciate the large, comfortable four-pillar cab, angle feedback joystick steering and independent work control to help reduce fatigue on long operating days. The new wheel loaders also feature standard rear object detection and a deluxe LED light package to promote enhanced jobsite safety.

Spring Demo Days 2025 gave attendees a firsthand look at Komatsu’s new solutions and the opportunity to operate equipment
Komatsu’s Customer Center in Cartersville, Ga., buzzed with energy during Spring Demo Days 2025, as contractors, fleet managers and heavy equipment operators from across North America gathered for three days of hands-on experiences, technology previews and one-on-one conversations with Komatsu specialists.
From intelligent machine control (IMC) 3.0 and other Smart Construction solutions like drone surveying tools, the event underscored Komatsu’s commitment to innovation — and more importantly, to the companies and individuals across the construction industry who put that technology to work.
“Spring Demo Days 2025 showcased a range of our Komatsu and partner brands’ products — from our IMC 2.0 dozers and 3D Machine Guidance excavators to the WA485-11 and WA475-11 wheel loaders and Smart Quarry solutions,” said Ethan Staples, Product Demonstration Specialist, Komatsu.
“The highlight this week has been the new Komatsu PC220LCi-12 excavator. As the newest excavator that Komatsu has released, its redesigned cab, integrated technology and jobsite versatility make it a standout for construction companies across the board.”
Customer feedback
According to Staples, the event is structured to give customers value from the moment they arrive.
“Every day starts with a safety and product briefing in our theater, then we rotate attendees through stations — dozers, excavators, loaders, trucks and Smart Construction solutions,” explained Staples. “We station Komatsu team members at each area to inform customers about each machine’s capabilities and offer the customers an opportunity to get real answers to real questions from our experts.”

That personal attention left an impression on Valentine Cortese, owner of AWS Landworks in New Jersey, who recently finished a project two months ahead of schedule thanks to his new Komatsu D71PXi IMC dozer.
“The machine’s performance and the smart grade system really helped with efficiency, wear and tear, and gave us a finished product we were proud of,” Cortese commented. “We’re here today to look into the IMC excavators and drones. The drone presentation was very educational. Demo Days is a great tool for us owners to look at the new technology, future purchases and just the performance of the machines.”
Brandon Wilson, the owner of Wilson Excavation in Utah, added, “This is my first time here, and I would absolutely recommend coming out to Komatsu Demo Days. Where else do you get to play in a big sandbox and try different machines that you can use on your jobsites and for your equipment? It’s great.”
Wilson also noted that his team already runs about 20 Komatsu machines, including several IMC dozers and excavators.
“We love the IMC machines for their cost-effectiveness,” emphasized Wilson. “You move the dirt once, put it in the right place the first time and track production accurately. That translates into stronger bids and better pricing for our clients.”

Technology solutions
Attendees also received a firsthand look at the latest innovations in Smart Construction technology, including faster drone data processing tools, new scheduling and resource-tracking platforms, and cloud-based dashboards that enable contractors to manage assets in real time.

Dynapac introduced its new CP28 pneumatic tire roller to the North American market during the World of Asphalt Show & Conference and AGG1 Aggregates Academy & Expo. As the heaviest ballastable pneumatic tire roller on the market, the CP28 is designed for superior compaction performance, and its flexible rubber tires and adjustable air pressure system allow operators to achieve consistent density while minimizing surface damage.
The versatile CP28 is ideal for various applications, including finishing asphalt layers to create a smooth, even surface with best-in-class tire overlap. It also excels at compacting different soil types, from granular to semi-cohesive materials.

The CP28 is engineered with operator comfort and control in mind. It offers a choice between symmetric and asymmetric cab configurations, providing exceptional visibility from within the cab. The newly designed right-foot brake pedal enhances responsiveness for improved maneuverability.
One of the CP28’s standout time-saving and efficiency-boosting features is the Air on the Run system, which inflates all tires from 0 to 120 psi (pound-force per square inch) in 12 minutes.
Additionally, the roller features front and rear suspension systems designed to optimize tire-to-surface contact. The front suspension allows for a 4.5-degree lateral oscillation and 1.5-degree tilt to both the right and left, while the new rear suspension enables a 2.0-degree tilt in both directions. This ensures constant ground contact for superior compaction results.
Versatile ballast system
The CP28 is equipped with a watertight frame, allowing for a flexible ballast system that can go from 21,000 pounds to 62,000 pounds. Using a forklift, operators can easily adjust the weight by adding or removing steel plates in the front and rear ballast compartments. For even greater flexibility, the machine can be ballasted with wet sand, water, steel shot or scrap metal.

Komatsu showcases new mining machines and Smart Quarry solutions at Quarry Days, offering a unique opportunity for attendees to operate the equipment
Komatsu’s Quarry Days 2025 brought a record-breaking number of attendees to the company’s Arizona Proving Grounds near Tucson. The annual event highlighted a diverse range of Komatsu’s heavy equipment and introduced new products tailored specifically for quarry and mining operations.
Bruce Boebel, Komatsu’s Director of Product and Services, expressed enthusiasm about the successful event.
“We’ve had a great turnout this year — in fact, it’s a record turnout,” Boebel declared. “Customers from many different areas in North America attended, so it’s a very diverse group. We saw great interaction this week.”
Quarry Days primarily showcased Komatsu’s mining support gear, including significant offerings like large excavators and dozers. Throughout the week, attendees had the opportunity to explore and test over 20 products and solutions, guided by Komatsu’s team of experts.
Highlights included live demonstrations of Komatsu’s latest releases, the HD605-10 and WA700-8, and an exclusive preview of the upcoming WA475-11 and WA485-11
wheel loaders. These new machines reflect Komatsu’s commitment to delivering solutions that help operators boost productivity and efficiency at quarry sites.
For instance, the new WA485-11YL is available in a yard loader (YL) configuration. The new WA485-11YL adds unique features to the standard base model, specifically designed for demanding quarry and aggregate applications. It is equipped with a large-capacity bucket and counterweight. This makes this purpose-built wheel loader a great choice for handling, stockpiling and loading processed material onto commercial trucks with three passes.

Komatsu further demonstrated its commitment to innovation through its Smart Quarry and My Komatsu solutions. These digital solutions, applicable to Komatsu and competitor equipment alike, provide actionable insights to help optimize quarry operations.
“Our Smart Quarry Site system lets you monitor machine interactions, fuel efficiency, and identify operational bottlenecks,” explained Boebel. “It’s a great resource that can be integrated across a mixed fleet to help enhance site optimization.”
Hands-on opportunities
During Quarry Days, attendees had the opportunity to operate the showcased equipment with the guidance and supervision of experienced Komatsu trainers and employees.

“Some other OEMs don’t allow customers on-site to operate equipment; that’s one unique aspect Komatsu prides itself on,” stated Boebel. “Customers can safely operate machines with headsets and trainers in the vehicles, providing an interactive, valuable experience.”

Bonus depreciation returns to 100%
The One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) has restored 100% bonus depreciation for qualified property placed in service after Jan. 19, 2025, provided that it is acquired under a binding written contract executed on or after that date.1
This reinstated 100% bonus depreciation encourages businesses to invest in capital improvements by providing a full tax deduction in the first year the asset is placed in service. However, the eligibility depends on the execution date of the purchase agreement — contracts signed prior to Jan. 19, 2025, are only eligible for 40% bonus depreciation, even if the asset is placed in service later in the year.2
Higher amounts for Section 179
One key advantage of bonus depreciation is that it has no cap on the amount that can
be deducted. Businesses can also combine bonus depreciation with Section 179 expensing, another powerful tax-saving tool, although Section 179 does include an annual limit. Section 179 may be particularly useful for smaller capital equipment purchases such as machinery or software. ■

Komatsu Supercoolant helps provide better protection against corrosion and a longer life to reduce downtime and costs
Your equipment can face a range of temperature extremes. Without proper protection against high heat and extreme cold, corrosion could occur in the engine, which leads to performance issues. The new Komatsu Supercoolant delivers a formula designed to better protect components against the elements and premature failure.
Komatsu Supercoolant uses advanced POAT (phosphated organic acid technology) with corrosion inhibitors. The new formula has been certified for use in Cummins heavy-duty diesel engines and meets CES 14603 standards. This means it can be used in all Komatsu equipment and other all-makes equipment with Cummins engines.

In addition to better protection, the new Komatsu Supercoolant formula has a longer replacement interval — up to 12,000 hours with regular KOWA (Komatsu Oil and Wear Analysis) sampling and adding an extender additive after 6,000 hours.
“KOWA should be performed at every maintenance interval as it’s similar to a ‘blood test’ that can identify issues that need to be addressed before they become catastrophic,” Laskero said. “With this new Komatsu Supercoolant, at 6,000 hours, you should perform a KOWA, and if everything is in good working order, you can add the extender to prolong life. An additional KOWA should be performed at 9,000 hours. At 12,000 hours, it’s time to flush the cooling system and add new Supercoolant.”
When switching from the previous Komatsu Supercoolant formula, a cooling system flush is not needed. However, it should not be mixed with other coolant brands.
“If you are using a different brand of coolant currently, it is advised that you perform a coolant system flush before using Supercoolant for the first time,” stated Laskero. “Once you have Komatsu Supercoolant in your machinery, you get extended interval replacement, which can help reduce downtime and maintenance costs. A bonus is you can use it in non-Komatsu equipment with Cummins engines.”
Komatsu Supercoolant is available in 1-gallon jugs, 5-gallon pails, 55-gallon drums and 320-gallon totes through your Komatsu distributor and on My Komatsu. Consult your machine’s operator and maintenance manual (OMM) or distributor representative for the proper fluid level. ■

Aggregate producer Harshman Construction uses genuine Komatsu Reman components to increase the life of its high-hour wheel loaders
Multigenerational family business
Harshman Construction LLC continues to serve customers with a wide range of aggregate products nearly 50 years after Frank Harshman and his sons Frank, Jeff and Warren started the operation. Today, the third generation of the Harshman family oversees 17 locations that produce hundreds of thousands of tons of materials each year.
“We have six crushing plants and a dirt crew that does all our own stripping,” elaborated Service Manager Burton Harshman, who leads the business with his brothers Sam and Casey as well as their cousins Katie, Trenton and Brendan. “We are strictly a material supplier, with products ranging from ag lime to riprap. Base rock, concrete stone and asphalt stone are our main products.”
With a fleet of more than 175 pieces of equipment that includes many Komatsu excavators and wheel loaders, Burton is responsible for fleet management that ensures the machinery continues to perform at a high level in order to maintain production.
“We pride ourselves on taking care of equipment, and because of that we have a large number of high-hour Komatsu machines that remain productive,” stated Burton. “We regularly service our equipment and change components as needed. A few years ago, we made the decision along with our Komatsu distributor to rebuild a couple of WA600 loaders with Komatsu Reman components as opposed to buying new. It proved to
be a very cost-effective way to maintain their productivity and extended the life of those machines.”
In addition to being more cost-effective, the quality of genuine Komatsu remanufactured parts and components is better than will-fit items. Plus, the Reman parts and components are backed with a one-year, unlimited-hour warranty and a quality assurance program of up to 10,000 hours on major components. With fewer raw materials used in remanufacturing, they also contribute to improved sustainability.
Easy decision
After seeing the high production the rebuilt WA600 wheel loaders delivered, the Harshman Construction team confidently decided to rebuild a Komatsu WA500 wheel loader on its own with Komatsu Reman components. Harshman Construction’s maintenance staff replaced the engine, transmission and pumps.
“The frame of the machine was really good, and the pins and bushings were still in excellent condition, even at 18,000 hours,” said Burton. “That, along with the cost savings of using Reman components and the warranty and assurance, made the decision to rebuild an easy one. Basically, we’re getting a like-new machine that we can run for several thousand hours. The savings allow us to invest more resources into growing our business.” ■

Control wear while driving productivity
Komatsu’s Parallel Link Undercarriage System aims to maximize machine life, minimize downtime and cut long-term operating costs
Awell-built undercarriage does more than support the machine — it can help protect uptime, help control costs, and assist performance in tough conditions. From bushing design to track tensioning, every detail matters when it comes to keeping equipment productive over time. That’s why Komatsu’s Parallel Link Undercarriage System (PLUS) is engineered with the goal of distributing wear evenly, simplifying maintenance and delivering long-term durability where it counts most.
“Undercarriage costs can represent up to 50% of a dozer’s lifetime maintenance,” said Raf Bukowski, Product Marketing Manager for HST Dozers, Komatsu. “That’s why Komatsu made durability and service life the top priorities with the PLUS undercarriage. We’ve focused on smarter wear distribution, simplified maintenance and materials that last. All of that [can] translate into real savings and less downtime for customers.”
Performance-focused design
The most notable innovation of PLUS is its rotating bushing technology. Unlike systems that require manual bushing rotation, Komatsu’s design allows bushings to float around the pin, promoting even wear with the goal of extending component life.
“With PLUS, you’re getting nearly double the life compared to traditional undercarriages before any major intervention is needed,” Bukowski explained. “Time is money in this industry. If you can run longer without pulling machines into the shop, that’s a huge win.”
PLUS also includes a self-adjusting idler that automatically works to maintain optimal track tension. This is designed to help minimize track slippage and premature wear, helping operators maintain performance while assisting to protect the system over time.
“It works like a cruise control for track tension,” stated Bukowski. “It’s snug enough to perform well but loose enough to help protect the components. That balance adds up over thousands of operating hours.”
With durability in mind, Komatsu also redesigned key structural elements. Carrier rollers now feature thicker material and updated flange geometry to promote even link contact, while segmented sprockets are shaped to shed material and resist packing in challenging terrain.
“Every inch of the system is purpose-built,” Bukowski declared. “We’ve made iterative
improvements based on field feedback. This isn’t the same undercarriage you saw five or six years ago.”
Smart technology integration
PLUS pairs with Komatsu’s intelligent machine control (IMC) technology to help control overall machine stress and promote extended undercarriage life. As the load increases during operation, the machine automatically adjusts the blade to help prevent track slippage, helping to control unnecessary wear on the system.
“Our dozers don’t just push dirt — they respond like experienced operators,” commented Tony Kosolofski, Komatsu IMC Product Manager in Canada. “With IMC 2.0, we’ve given the machine the ability to predict terrain changes and adjust proactively. That helps reduce operator fatigue and undercarriage strain.”

Komatsu IMC dozers like the D71PXi-24 and D61PXi-24 use track mapping to capture real-time as-built data and apply features such as lift layer control, which helps promote consistent compaction thicknesses. That data integrates seamlessly with Komatsu’s Smart Construction Dashboard, enabling users to compare performance day by day.
“When we talk about undercarriage wear, we’re also talking about how you use the machine,” Kosolofski added. “Technology that limits unnecessary spinning, slipping or overworking helps stretch the life of every component.” ■

Modern Machinery featured several manufacturing lines with one of the largest exhibits at the 87th Oregon Logging Conference (OLC), including TimberPro’s (a Komatsu-owned company) new TN230D log loader. The 197-horsepower machine was built from the ground up based on customer feedback.
The TN230D offers a 36-foot reach and 58,244 foot-pounds of swing torque. It also features Power Max, which temporarily increases engine horsepower and hydraulic flow to support tough forestry tasks. It’s the first machine in its class segment to feature dual service platforms with electrically actuated platforms on the left and right sides, offering improved access for cleaning and servicing.
New benefits of the TN230D include easy access via a large, rear-entry cab with service walkways and safety railings, premium heated and cooled seats with adjustable armrests, an elevated cabin with large windows and a front-view camera to enhance visibility, LED lights, and a large overhead skylight.

Additional TimberPro equipment in Modern Machinery’s exhibit included a TL755D West Coast Edition feller buncher configured as a directional felling machine with a TimberPro harvester boom and arm combo. Vaughn said it’s a great solution for steep-slope felling and forwarding applications. He added that it sets up well for cable-assisted operation with Modern’s Falcon PC290LC-11W Winch Assist machine that is based on a new Komatsu PC290LC-11 excavator and offers benefits such as Komatsu Care and extended warranties.

“The combination has proven to be highly effective in sensitive applications when paired with a static/standing skyline yarder, keeping workers off the ground and out of harm’s way,” noted Vaughn.
The exhibit also featured a TimberPro TL755D feller buncher equipped with a Quadco (a Komatsu-owned company) 27V/360 disc saw and a TL775D SL self-leveling shovel logger.

Komatsu, Astec
Komatsu equipment on display included a purpose-built PC230F-11 processor with a Southstar (a Komatsu-owned company) QS600 grapple processor. The 197-horsepower processor has a rugged design, high and wide undercarriage, powerful swing motor, and is designed to withstand high-debris conditions with a robust wide-fine radiator that’s covered with heavy-duty forestry screens.
Modern Machinery also showcased a Komatsu D71EX-24 dozer with screens and a winch that can be used for roadbuilding and a variety of additional tasks, as well as an HM300 articulated haul truck that works well in rough terrain and features a 30.9-ton capacity.
Lastly, attendees could see an Astec FT200 mobile cone crusher. Astec uses a unique roller bearing design to help increase efficiency and reduce operating expenses by up to 50%. The 111,000-pound crusher features
a 36-inch-by-17-foot feeder. Mobile and stationary producers alike will benefit from quick, on-site movement, according to Astec.
