DunRite Sand & Gravel Company Inc.’s mining operation delivers a wide range of standard and custom material blends for the region

Customer snapshot

Company: DunRite Sand & Gravel Company Inc.

Location: Vineland, New Jersey

Established: 1968

Employees: 22

Area of expertise: Aggregate production

Komatsu equipment:  WA500 wheel loaders; WA500 yard loaders; HM400 articulated trucks; D65PX dozer; D65PXi-18 IMC dozer; PC490LC excavators

Komatsu technology: Smart Construction 3D Machine Guidance; intelligent machine control (IMC); My Komatsu

DunRite Sand & Gravel Company Inc. has been a steady presence in southern New Jersey’s aggregate market since its founding in 1968. The company began with a modest 300-acre farm in Sicklerville, N.J., and has steadily grown to its current 1,200-acre mine site in Vineland, N.J.

“The original site had just five guys who would bring their own tools from home,” shared Project Manager Chuck Pinotti. “There wasn’t a work boat, and there were barely enough loaders to keep the operation viable, but they kept pushing forward and grew the company to where it is

today. It’s a big operation, but we’re still family owned. The Galetto and Calovi families remain actively involved, and there’s a real commitment to take care of the land and the people.”

Over nearly six decades, DunRite has developed an impressive scope of work, supplying aggregates across a wide territory with 22 employees. Its sand and gravel products support concrete companies, bagged cement producers, and major infrastructure projects, primarily from New Jersey to Lancaster, Pa., but DunRite will also ship to other states.

“On any given day, we’re sending out bulk products, topsoils, infield mixes, thermal sands, your basic sand and gravel, bar sand, and concrete sand," noted Pinotti.

DunRite also offers unique, custom blends to meet its customers’ various requirements.

“We’ll tackle any engineered design a customer brings us.”

- Chuck Pinotti, Project Manager, DunRite Sand & Gravel Company Inc.

“We’ll tackle any engineered design a customer brings us,” stated Pinotti. “From baseball infield mixes to burial sand for high-voltage lines in New York City, we make sure they get exactly what they need. Any products or engineered designs come here, get looked at, processed and designed; we make them, and we ship them out. That’s given us an edge over many of our competitors who aren’t doing all those aspects of aggregates to move them out the door. We will take any challenge, sit down as ownership and management, look at it, evaluate it, and figure out how to do it. That’s a big key to why DunRite has become the company that it is today.”

Saving with Smart Construction

DunRite’s Vineland site includes a massive dredge pond with towering banks that require precision mining and reclamation. The team also uses dry mining to reach materials that the dredge can’t access. Meeting that level of demand takes robust equipment. Years ago, DunRite made the switch from a mixed fleet to a fully Komatsu fleet, driven by reliability and long-term performance.

An operator can load a tri-axle truck in just two passes with a Komatsu WA500 yard loader at DunRite’s mine site in Vineland, N.J.

“Komatsu has been a huge part of our success,” Pinotti emphasized. “I keep detailed records on all of our equipment — from fuel efficiency and service costs to warranty claims. It’s important to know exactly what each machine is costing us over its lifetime. Komatsu consistently stands up better in our tough environment compared to other brands of equipment, and that reliability makes all the difference. We use them for 10 hours every day.”

“Komatsu has been a huge part of our success.”

- Chuck Pinotti, Project Manager, DunRite Sand & Gravel Company Inc.

DunRite’s fleet of Komatsu equipment includes six WA500 wheel loaders, two WA500 yard loaders, two HM400 articulated trucks, a D65PX dozer, a D65PXi-18 intelligent machine control (IMC) dozer, and two PC490LC excavators, one of which is equipped with Smart Construction 3D Machine Guidance.

“The WA500 loaders handle everything from feeding portable screeners to loading trucks with aggregate and sand,” Pinotti described. “The two WA500 yard loaders have 10-yard buckets, so we can load 90% of our trucks in just two passes. They’re essential machines to

our operation and provide the versatility and reliability we need.”

The PC490 excavators are used for various tasks around the facility.

“The first use is loading trucks with just regular fill dirt in and out,” Pinotti explained. “The second use is loading haul trucks to send extra product to the plant for production.

DunRite relies on a Komatsu D65PXi-18 intelligent machine control (IMC) dozer to grade banks and set new ground for infrastructure.
DunRite primarily uses its Komatsu PC490LC excavator to load its Komatsu HM400 articulated trucks.

We use the PC490 with the Smart Construction to taper our banks, so when we’re finished pumping in an area of the lake, we can put the D65PXi and that PC490 on the edge of the bank, and we can keep grade with that machine, so we don’t have to go back and do it again. We can actually put the elevations that we want into the program, and that machine will keep us within tolerance of where we need to be, so we do it once, and we move on.”

Pinotti added, “We love the D65PXi machine, and it saves us so much time and money on reclamation of the ponds, putting our banks where they need to be, setting flat level ground for new concrete infrastructure, new buildings. That’s all part of what’s helped make us successful.”

Along with Komatsu’s Smart Construction solutions, DunRite uses My Komatsu — a comprehensive digital hub that allows 24/7 access to machine telematics data, parts manuals, service manuals, software and parts ordering — to monitor its fleet daily.

“My Komatsu is fantastic,” declared Pinotti. “It lets us see exactly what’s going on. It tracks hours, fuel burn and location for every piece of equipment we run. We even get alerts for

By the numbers

• 1,200-acre mine site

factory upgrades or any issues, so we can catch problems early and keep production moving smoothly. It’s a great product.”

Reliable support

Support from Komatsu Company-owned Dealer East (Komatsu East), and particularly sales representative Jared Nutter, has been another factor in DunRite’s success. Pinotti credits Nutter for keeping things simple and straightforward.

“Jared is a great guy, and he does what he says he’s going to do,” Pinotti said. “He’s on time when he says he’s going to be on time. He comes with the right numbers on the machines. He backs you if you do have a question or a problem.”

Reliable support means DunRite’s machines regularly reach impressive lifespans. One Komatsu WA500 still runs daily with more than 26,000 hours on its original engine and transmission.

“It’s all about maintenance and the right partnerships,” Pinotti commented. “Komatsu backs us up, and that gives us predictability. Knowing we can count on these machines for the long haul gives us confidence to keep pushing production forward.”

“Nothing happens without sand, and nothing moves without yellow iron — and for us, that means Komatsu.”

- Chuck Pinotti, Project Manager, DunRite Sand & Gravel Company Inc.

Long-term operation

That reliability lets DunRite plan confidently for the future, with enough material on-site to sustain mining operations for decades to come.

“We’re always looking to grow, find new land and expand into other industries,” Pinotti reflected. “I see nothing but bigger and better things ahead.”

At its core, DunRite believes its success is built on its people, its quality product and its trusted machines.

Pinotti concluded, “Nothing happens without sand, and nothing moves without yellow iron — and for us, that means Komatsu.” ■

• 90% of trucks can be loaded in 2 passes with Komatsu WA500 yard loaders equipped with 10-yard buckets

• 26,000+ hours of operation have been logged by a single WA500 wheel loader still running on its original engine and transmission

Careers built to last

From novices to experts, shop and field techs find growth, support and long-term opportunity

The technicians at Komatsu Company-owned Dealer East (Komatsu East) help keep customers satisfied across 11 branches throughout the region. Their work blends hands-on skills, continuous learning, and a strong team culture that elevates new and seasoned techs alike.

“We’re the people customers remember after the sale,” said Service Manager Jim Painton, who has been with the South Plainfield, N.J.,

shop for 11 years. “When problems surface, we calm things down and fix them the right way. Solving those big issues is the most rewarding part of my job.”

Painton oversees field and shop operations, but he credits the technicians on the front line for Komatsu East’s success. He sees their customer interactions as the heartbeat of repeat business.

“When customers think of Komatsu, it’s often the tech who shows up when a machine is down.”

- Jim Painton, Service Manager, Komatsu Company-owned Dealer East

“Our field mechanics are the face of the company every day,” Painton emphasized. “When customers think of Komatsu, it’s often the tech who shows up when a machine is down.”

Kenny Sanchez, a newer field mechanic, moved from the shop to the road this year. He handles everything from basic repairs to heavy work and says the pace suits him.

“A typical day starts with coming into the shop for any parts I need, then I go to wherever the machine is that needs attention, do the repair, then go to another machine and so on,” Sanchez explained. “The best part is the people you meet at each stop. Every job and customer teaches you something new.”

Backed by teamwork

Inside the shops, momentum comes from shared problem-solving. Zachery Fackler, a shop technician who joined Komatsu East’s Laurel, Del., location last year, recently completed the branch’s first rebuild.

“We planned early, organized every document and leaned on each other when questions came up,” Fackler described. “No one hoards information here — we troubleshoot as a team. It’s a great team effort, and I’ve never seen anything like it at other places I’ve worked.”

Laurel Service Manager Michael King added, “Zach did a great job, and he came in under time. He made Laurel look good, and I think

we’ll get many more rebuilds because of that. Technicians are the lifeblood of the company.”

In Holbrook, N.Y., Senior Technician Ryan Cronin has spent a decade rising through the ranks. He mentors others and still chases difficult diagnoses.

“To me, the most gratifying part of being a technician is figuring the problem out.”

Ryan Cronin, Senior Technician, Komatsu Company-owned Dealer East

“To me, the most gratifying part of being a technician is figuring the problem out,” commented Cronin. “The technology keeps shifting, and that’s what keeps me going. I like how Komatsu lays everything out in a service manual compared to other equipment that’s out there. They make it a little more user-friendly for a technician.”

Learning opportunities are abundant, which new mechanic Emily Hubbard appreciates. She started as a yard helper and stepped into the Holbrook, N.Y., shop this spring.

“I came in as a very green technician, but Komatsu took a chance on me and has sent me to school,” Hubbard shared. “Now, I’m

helping with a WA600 engine swap and seeing the job through end to end. Every week, the terminology and systems click a little more.”

Place to grow

Work-life balance shows up in different forms — coaching youth sports, caring for dogs, fishing or racing on the weekends. Managers support military commitments and family schedules without drama. Komatsu also offers employees opportunities to move into different positions within the company, depending on their interests and career goals.

“This is a place where people stay and grow,” Painton reflected. “We’ve celebrated 40- and even 50-year careers. Komatsu supports us a hundred percent with the ability to advance, with parts, with service support, with training. It’s a very good place to work. If you enjoy this industry, there’s no reason to leave once you’re an employee here.”

For new techs, the appeal is straightforward: real responsibility, experienced mentors and modern equipment. For veterans, it’s the satisfaction of solving problems that matters on jobsites and highways.

“I like being outside, moving and figuring things out,” Sanchez said. “Simple jobs aren’t always simple, and that keeps you learning. That’s why I’m here.” ■

A complete approach to earthmoving, utilities and development sets Kirila Earthworks Inc. apart in the Mid-Atlantic

Customer snapshot

Company: Kirila Earthworks Inc.

Location: Bowie, Maryland

Established: 2015

Employees: 10

Areas of expertise: Complete site development, stormwater management, underground utilities and duct bank installation

Komatsu equipment: PC240LC-11 and PC88MR excavators; D51PXi-24 IMC dozer

Komatsu technology: intelligent machine control (IMC); My Komatsu

Kirila Earthworks Inc. was founded in 2015 as a small, family-owned stormwater management and underground utility contractor based in Virginia. Over the past decade, it has evolved into a full-service site development firm operating out of Bowie, Md., with a growing reputation for quality and reliability across the Mid-Atlantic.

“My wife and I started with a project called Clean Water Partnership, which was to facilitate underground retentions and ponds throughout Maryland, and we just kept building from there,” recalled Dave Kirila, Vice President of Construction. “Back then, we did about $200,000 in revenue. This year, we’re projecting $10 million.”

Kirila Earthworks now covers a sizable territory, handling projects from Frederick, Md., to Manassas, Va. The company’s work spans complete site development — clearing, earthwork, utilities and retention systems —

with a growing niche in duct bank installation for data centers.

“We like to be turnkey,” Dave explained. “From erosion control to final grading, our goal is to hand over a fully completed site, so general contractors don’t have to juggle multiple subcontractors. Schedules and costs can be met, which is important.”

Kirila Earthworks currently maintains a steady staff of 10 employees but leverages union affiliations to scale as needed for each project. This flexibility ensures the business can handle jobs ranging from $2 million to $15 million without compromising quality or schedule.

As the company grew, it maintained its close-knit roots. Dave and his wife, Jami — the president and owner of Kirila Earthworks — co-founded the business, and their son, Sam, joined shortly after. The result is a truly family-run operation with all three Kirilas involved in day-to-day management.

“When you call Kirila Earthworks or Kirila Construction Services, a Kirila picks up the phone, and we really pride ourselves on service and quality.”

- Sam Kirila, Project Executive at Kirila Earthworks, Owner of Kirila Construction Services

"I grew up my father's right-hand man in a family-owned company, and it's great to have my son as my right-hand man," shared Dave.

“I wouldn’t have it any other way,” said Sam. “When you call Kirila Earthworks or Kirila Construction Services, a Kirila picks up the phone, and we really pride ourselves on service and quality. We like to focus not so much on being the lowest price but on being the most efficient, effective, qualified earthworks, site contractors and workforce developers that we can be.”

Leveraging IMC technology

On the equipment side, Kirila Earthworks has embraced Komatsu machines through its partnership with Komatsu Company-owned Dealer East (Komatsu East). That relationship has become central to the company’s success on the jobsite.

(L-R) Komatsu East Territory Manager Shane Pinzka provides support to Kirila Earthworks Inc.’s Sam Kirila, Jami Kirila and Dave Kirila.

“Our Komatsu PC240LC-11 excavator is the most versatile machine we’ve added,” Dave commented. “We needed that extra reach for utility work, and the PC240LC-11 hit the sweet spot. We demoed a larger machine, but Shane Pinzka, our rep from Komatsu, steered us back down to this size. It was a true collaborative effort to try to get us in the right niche for what we needed.”

The company also invested in a Komatsu D51PXi-24 intelligent machine control (IMC) dozer with integrated GPS. Initially hesitant to adopt IMC technology, Dave changed his mind after testing the equipment in the field.

“As a longtime operator, I was skeptical, but after running it for a few weeks, I was stunned by how accurate and efficient it was,” shared Dave. “Now, I wouldn’t go back.”

The Komatsu D51PXi-24 IMC dozer has become a key part of the fleet for stone installation, grading and site prep. Having the ability to handle multiple tasks with one machine has helped streamline operations. For Dave, the equipment’s comfort and control layout, as well as the Smart Construction technology, have had an immediate and measurable impact, especially on utility and grading work.

“Before, we would have been using strings and grade stakes,” said Dave. “Now, the D51PXi-24 does it all — cuts, fills and fine grades —

without us having to swap out machines. The cab design, the visibility and the way the controls are placed — it’s just a great machine to run. I didn’t expect to like it this much, but I do. We’ve seen a 25% to 35% jump in productivity. It’s definitely the right choice we made. We’re really happy with it.”

“Before, we would have been using strings and grade stakes. Now, the D51PXi-24 does it all — cuts, fills and fine grades — without us having to swap out machines.”

- Dave Kirila, Vice President of Construction, Kirila Earthworks

Support and digital tools

Beyond equipment performance, Kirila Earthworks values Komatsu East for its responsiveness. From equipment delivery to tech support, Komatsu East comes through consistently.

“We’ve never waited more than 24 hours for a service tech to come out here after we’ve called,” Sam noted. “We’re too small of a company to have a mechanic on staff ourselves, and the biggest sale for Komatsu is their service department. Komatsu is on the ball ahead of time. Before our services are due, the service department calls us and says, ‘Hey, is the equipment here? Can we come out and service it?’ They are making sure that all of our warranties

and everything like that are still intact, and the equipment lasts as long as possible.”

According to Dave, it was Territory Manager Shane Pinzka’s consultative approach that won him over: “He never pushed a sale. He just asked for a shot to earn our business. That stuck with us.”

“The My Komatsu app has made it easier to plan ahead and keep our equipment running at full strength.”

Sam Kirila,

Executive at Kirila Earthworks, Owner of Kirila Construction Services

Sam added, “As a salesman, he really kind of just connected with us on a small business level, and now he’s hopefully along for the ride as we grow.”

The partnership has extended to financing and ongoing machine training. Kirila Earthworks now uses Komatsu’s digital tools to manage

service intervals and machine usage data across jobsites.

“The My Komatsu app has made it easier to plan ahead and keep our equipment running at full strength,” Sam acknowledged. “From tracking utilization to ordering parts, it’s all in one place.”

Goals for the future

Moving forward, both Kirila Earthworks and Kirila Construction Services plan to grow at a sustainable pace while maintaining the integrity and service-first approach that have brought them this far.

“My goal is to pass this company on to Sam and see him continue to build it the right way,” Dave said. “There’s a lot of opportunity out here, and we want to be positioned to take advantage of it.”

For Sam, the focus is on solving workforce challenges and growing the impact of Kirila Construction Services: “We’re trying to train and place skilled labor throughout the region. That helps other contractors succeed, and it helps raise the overall standard of the industry.” ■

Offer provides exceptional value

Komatsu is including Smart Construction solutions with the purchase of IMC equipment now through March 31

Komatsu is giving customers added value when they purchase an intelligent machine control (IMC) dozer or excavator through March 31, 2026, by offering three Smart Construction solutions complimentary for a year. All customers who purchase a new IMC-equipped product receive Smart Construction Dashboard and Smart Construction Remote, and those buying a PC220LCi-12 IMC 3.0 excavator will also receive Smart Construction Fleet Lite.

“We want to help our customers get better exposure to technology that enables them to get more out of their IMC machines.”

– Ron Schwieters, Senior Manager, Smart Construction, Komatsu

“We want to help our customers get better exposure to technology that enables them to get more out of their IMC machines,” said Ron Schwieters, Senior Manager, Smart Construction, Komatsu. “IMC is a great investment based on the semi-automatic features alone, but there’s more production and efficiency to unlock with these and other Smart Construction solutions. The complimentary bundle equates to about a $9,000 value per year, plus productivity and efficiency gains.”

Smart Construction Remote provides 3D data file transfer to a machine from anywhere with an internet connection, enabling project managers and others to update design changes without the time and costs of driving to the jobsite. They can also view the operator’s screen remotely and see exactly what the operator sees, if needed for troubleshooting or questions. Smart Construction Remote is compatible with the latest IMC, Smart Construction 3D Machine Guidance, Topcon and Trimble GNSS systems.

“Remote is an easy solution that’s proven to reduce costs,” noted Schwieters. “Updates can be done anytime and from practically anywhere. If it’s sent after hours, the update will occur the next time the operator starts the machine. It’s seamless and requires no input from the operator.”

Visualize data at any time

Smart Construction Dashboard combines as-built data from IMC and other machines,

plus design and drone data, to create a 3D virtual twin of your jobsite. This solution has many essential features and operational benefits:

• Users can quickly measure cut-and-fill

• Job completion is automatically calculated

• 2D/3D cross-sections help users check elevation changes

• Progress logs help users understand overall completion from chart to timeline

• Heatmap visualizations show completed and remaining work, as well as cut/fill and overcut/overfill

“It’s a great tool for visualizing data and tracking progress at any time,” stated Schwieters. “That can help you make faster decisions that affect production and potentially save costs. For instance, if you see that you are behind on a project, you can allocate additional resources. If you are ahead, you can put resources into other places. It’s also easy and fast to create accurate reports for customers or regulators.”

Smart Construction Fleet Lite is a simple payload tracking solution for machines with an integrated payload meter. Payload history is sent back to the office every day, so project managers know how much material was moved and how that impacts the projected schedule and budget.

“At this time, the PC220LCi-12 is the only one, but more will be coming in the future,” said Schwieters. “These are all great solutions that provide real value. Customers can work with their local dealers’ Smart Construction teams to learn more about them and how to get the most out of them for their operations.”

Smart Construction solutions, such as Smart Construction Dashboard, help project managers see as-built data in near-real time.

Make the most of your telematics data

My

Komatsu

gives you an easy way to collect, view and monitor machine information from Komatsu and non-Komatsu

equipment

Telematics data can help drive results for business operations, but only when it’s collected and analyzed efficiently.

My Komatsu, Komatsu’s comprehensive digital hub, analyzes telematics data from your on-machine technology — including Komtrax, Komtrax Plus and ISO API 15143-3 (AEMP 2.0) data from other OEMs — and displays it on easy-to-read dashboards. With My Komatsu, you can access data that’s generated by Komatsu and non-Komatsu equipment anytime, from anywhere.

“It’s a huge benefit in time and cost savings that you can monitor an entire fleet on a single platform, regardless of OEM.”

My Komatsu minimizes your logins and helps you see your data all in one place. ISO integration and analytics are included as standard features with your registration. ISO API 15143-3 (AEMP 2.0) computer code allows fleet managers to integrate new digital telematics data into existing fleet management systems, letting you see your complete fleet, pull operation reports and set alerts.

“It’s a huge benefit in time and cost savings that you can monitor an entire fleet on a single platform, regardless of OEM,” said Tommy Hergenreder, North American Manager, Digital Product, Komatsu. “Another is that Komatsu doesn’t charge for connecting other APIs, which some OEMs do. Currently, there is a long list of other manufacturers that you can get API credentials for, and it’s growing all the time.”

Komtrax data flows to Komtrax storage, while ISO 15143-3 (AEMP 2.0) facilitates the extraction

and raw data to your choice of database. My Komatsu connects telematics data from all machines or accesses it through monitoring and analysis services to create powerful analytics dashboard views.

Benefit your bottom line

With My Komatsu, you can:

• Get actionable information to monitor machines and help guide decisions

• Quickly view and manage data on one dashboard

• Receive maintenance alerts and order parts

• Troubleshoot to minimize downtime

• Monitor for theft and unauthorized use

• Benchmark machine performance

• Track fuel consumption and manage fuel efficiency

Available data points with My Komatsu vary by OEM and machine applications, but they generally include last known location, engine status, cumulative operating hours and more.

“One API credential from the OEM covers all of that manufacturer’s machines that you may have and want to input into your My Fleet page on My Komatsu,” said Andrew Casey, Digital Solutions Analyst, Komatsu. “This is a very cost-effective, convenient solution to managing a mixed fleet without any additional cost to implement My Komatsu.” ■

Prepare your fleet for winter weather

Follow these best practices to keep your equipment serviced, protected and operating reliably throughout the cold-weather season

No matter where you operate, cold weather could potentially affect your jobsites. Preparation helps ensure your machines are protected, so they can continue to give you good production or are properly stored against the elements.

Service your equipment

As temperatures drop, it’s a great time to bring your equipment in for scheduled service and take advantage of programs like Komatsu Care. Routine maintenance performed by certified technicians through your local Komatsu dealership helps identify cold-weather vulnerabilities. Our seasoned technicians can help check filters and fluids are properly winter-ready, and do the work to keep machines operating at peak reliability. Komatsu Care provides complimentary factory-scheduled maintenance on eligible machines for the first three years or 2,000 hours, helping you protect your equipment and reduce unexpected downtime through the winter season.

Fluids are essential

It’s recommended that you switch to a winter-blended diesel fuel to help protect your engine and its components. It’s essential that the automatic DEF line is purged before shutting down for the day or for months. Contact your local Komatsu dealer to get this service performed.

Visual inspections are key before startup

Before operating, make sure to do a thorough visual inspection of the machine to check for any irregularities, and address them before starting the machine to prevent potential damage. Start the machine, and let it warm up to proper operating temperature before you begin the workday.

Keep track of the undercarriage

Pay special attention to your equipment’s undercarriage during cold conditions. Brush off any snow that may have accumulated overnight or during breaks before entering the machine to reduce the chance of slipping. It’s especially vital to keep tracks cleaned to prevent an accumulation of mud and debris that could freeze and damage crucial components. Consider replacing your equipment’s undercarriage at your local Komatsu dealer to prepare your machine for spring.

Don’t overlook the cab

Cabs are often not thought of when it comes to cold temperatures, but they should be. To keep operators comfortable, ensure that the heater is in proper working order, as well as the heated seat if the machine is equipped with one. ■

Wear parts that work as hard as you do

Komatsu delivers OEM-quality components, expert support and long-term reliability

From bucket teeth and cutting edges to undercarriage components and crusher belts, wear parts are the backbone of every machine’s performance. They endure constant friction, pressure and abrasive materials, and when it comes time for replacement, quality matters. That’s why contractors across the Northeast trust Komatsu Company-owned Dealer East (Komatsu East) to keep their fleets running with genuine OEM wear parts and unmatched product support. Ground engaging tools (GET) can vary by environment/job, so customers should speak with their PSSR to identify the right GET for the best wear and longevity.

“Wear parts cover a large variety of components,” explained Steve Mazzarella, Product Support Manager, Komatsu East. “It could be ground engaging tools on excavators, cutting edges on dozers or milling teeth on road build equipment. These parts are designed to wear over time, and replacing them with high-quality components is critical to maintaining performance and reducing long-term costs.”

Because wear rate depends heavily on the material and environment, Komatsu East maintains expansive inventories.

“If one of our customers needs a wear part, we have them stocked on the shelf, and if not, we’ll get them fast,” declared Mazzarella. “Our goal is to always minimize downtime and keep machines producing.”

“OEM parts are top-quality products that are built to meet or exceed factory specs, and they come with the assurance programs and warranty support that only Komatsu can provide.”

- Steve Mazzarella, Product Support Manager, Komatsu Company-owned Dealer East

Komatsu East partners with trusted brands to provide a complete lineup of wear parts engineered to OEM specifications. That focus on quality and compatibility delivers peace of mind, especially when compared to aftermarket alternatives.

“When you buy online, you really don’t know what you’re getting,” warned Mazzarella. “Not long ago, a customer bought a non-OEM hydraulic seal kit online, but when he compared it to ours, there was a visible difference in the product. If he had used the cheap kit and it failed, it could

have contaminated the system and caused significant costs in damage. It’s not worth the risk. OEM parts are top-quality products that are built to meet or exceed factory specs, and they come with the assurance programs and warranty support that only Komatsu can provide.”

Service to match

In addition to quality products, Komatsu East customers benefit from expert service and field support. Mazzarella manages a team of 12 product support representatives across five states who inspect machines, identify wear trends and help customers make smart replacement decisions.

“We educate customers on when parts truly need replacing,” Mazzarella stated. “If you can safely get another 80 or 100 hours out of teeth or another 200 to 300 hours out of an undercarriage, that’s real savings.”

That partnership mindset extends beyond immediate sales. Komatsu East emphasizes education and relationship-building to help both veteran and next-generation equipment owners make informed maintenance decisions.

“We see a lot of younger managers coming into the industry,” noted Mazzarella. “It’s our job to build trust with them, teach them about proper wear management, and guide them toward solutions that protect their machines and bottom line.”

Komatsu also supports its customers through special financing programs, including 24 months of 0% interest on undercarriage replacements, helping contractors plan maintenance without straining budgets.

“At the end of the day, we’re not just selling parts,” said Mazzarella. “We’re a business partner. When customers choose Komatsu wear parts, they’re choosing reliability, quality and the service that keeps their equipment and their business running strong.”

Replacing wear parts with OEM-quality components helps maintain performance and reduce long-term costs.

Supporting careers in the heavy equipment industry

Educating and empowering the next generation of industry talent among youth and veterans

Komatsu Company-owned Dealer East (Komatsu East) is invested in educating the next generation about the heavy equipment industry and the various career opportunities it offers.

Alan “AJ” Binder, General Manager of Product Support, located out of South Plainfield, N.J., participated in a Career Day at the elementary school where his daughter, Brooke Binder, is a third-grade teacher. AJ gave his presentation, “Who is Komatsu and what kind of career could you have at Komatsu,” to the 75 students in the class.

AJ introduced the students to Komatsu and discussed the importance of safety in the workplace, showcasing the various equipment Komatsu manufactures. During the presentation, AJ explained the many job opportunities the kids could potentially take advantage of at Komatsu when they grow up, exposing these youngsters to future possibilities.

Mike Kubas, President, proudly shared his enthusiasm for AJ’s efforts and excellent

job sharing the value of the heavy equipment industry: “It’s not every day that kids get a firsthand look at the equipment and people who keep it moving. I’m sure you [AJ] made it fun, engaging and memorable for them. You represented Komatsu incredibly well, and I’m sure you sparked some curiosity along the way.”

Recruiting future talent

In addition to attending events at primary schools, Komatsu East participates in roughly one to two recruitment events per month, including higher education career fairs and military hiring events — such as Hire Our Heroes. This also helps spread the word that Komatsu is an official SkillBridge employer, a Department of Defense program.

“Simply put, SkillBridge allows active-duty military members to use the final six months of their service to work on-site at a Komatsu location,” stated Chadd Balbi, Senior Recruiter. “The goal is to bridge the gap from military to civilian life. It is through the hard work of John Lamkin from Komatsu that we were able to launch this program. It has allowed Komatsu East to offer employment to soon-to-be military veterans as they transition to civilian life. Much like our traditional internship, the end goal is to transition SkillBridge interns to full-time employees.”

Komatsu East’s traditional internship program was launched regionwide in 2024. Through the program, Komatsu East provides trade school students a period of time to earn real-world experience in the heavy equipment space.

“While our program is still young, we have found it successful and are excited to continue to build it.”

“It is open to all schools but was forged through a years-long relationship with Penn Tech and Komatsu East,” explained Chadd. “While our program mirrors Penn Tech’s curriculum, it is open to students from all schools. However, Penn Tech students can earn credits toward their degree by completing our program.”

The program employs students for a semester or more, allowing them to work side by side with some of the industry’s top technicians. During this time, they gain real-world experience, develop their skills, and learn from seasoned experts in the field. Once students successfully complete the program and earn their course credits, they are better off to take on full-time opportunities and ideally transition into a rewarding career.

Over the last two years, Komatsu East has employed five interns, with two of them transitioning to full-time employees and another remaining as an intern with the team.

The heavy equipment industry faces a growing demand for skilled technicians. Making the craft accessible and easy to learn is critical. At Komatsu East, a key focus is building awareness and educating the next generation of technicians, leaders and mechanics.

“While our program is still young, we have found it successful and are excited to continue to build it,” concluded Chadd. ■

Advanced formula with phosphates

Komatsu Supercoolant helps provide better protection against corrosion and a longer life to reduce downtime and costs

Your equipment can face a range of temperature extremes. Without proper protection against high heat and extreme cold, corrosion could occur in the engine, which leads to performance issues. The new Komatsu Supercoolant delivers a formula designed to better protect components against the elements and premature failure.

Komatsu Supercoolant uses advanced POAT (phosphated organic acid technology) with corrosion inhibitors. The new formula has been certified for use in Cummins heavy-duty diesel engines and meets CES 14603 standards. This means it can be used in all Komatsu equipment and other all-makes equipment with Cummins engines.

“The new Komatsu-specific formula adds phosphates that provide extra protection for components against corrosion. That protection helps ensure long life and that components don’t prematurely wear.”

- Tony Laskero, Senior Manager of Aftermarket, Komatsu

“The new Komatsu-specific formula adds phosphates that provide extra protection for components against corrosion,” explained Tony Laskero, Komatsu’s Senior Manager of Aftermarket. “That protection helps ensure long life and that components don’t prematurely wear.”

In addition to better protection, the new Komatsu Supercoolant formula has a longer replacement interval — up to 12,000 hours with regular KOWA (Komatsu Oil and Wear Analysis) sampling and adding an extender additive after 6,000 hours.

“KOWA should be performed at every maintenance interval as it’s similar to a ‘blood test’ that can identify issues that need to be addressed before they become catastrophic,” Laskero said. “With this new Komatsu Supercoolant, at 6,000 hours, you should perform a KOWA, and if everything is in good working order, you can add the extender to prolong life. An additional KOWA should be performed at 9,000 hours. At 12,000 hours, it’s time to flush the cooling system and add new Supercoolant.”

When switching from the previous Komatsu Supercoolant formula, a cooling system flush is not needed. However, it should not be mixed with other coolant brands.

“If you are using a different brand of coolant currently, it is advised that you perform a coolant system flush before using Supercoolant for the first time,” stated Laskero. “Once you have Komatsu Supercoolant in your machinery, you get extended interval replacement, which can help reduce downtime and maintenance costs. A bonus is you can use it in non-Komatsu equipment with Cummins engines.”

Komatsu Supercoolant is available in 1-gallon jugs, 5-gallon pails, 55-gallon drums and 320-gallon totes through your Komatsu distributor and on My Komatsu. Consult your machine’s operator and maintenance manual (OMM) or distributor representative for the proper fluid level. ■

Learn about Komatsu East’s dedicated branches, here to serve you

Have you wondered about the histories of Komatsu Company-owned Dealer East’s (Komatsu East) 11 locations? You can now read about each branch’s storied past and current services.

Laurel, Delaware

Founded in 1683, Laurel was established as a mill town along the James Branch of Broad Creek, which is why it is named after the laurel bushes that once covered the area. Komatsu East’s Laurel location offers service and parts to the local customers.

Baltimore, Maryland

Played a crucial role during the War of 1812, particularly at Fort McHenry, where the defense against the British forces inspired Francis Scott Key to write “The Star-Spangled Banner.” This location is a full-service facility located right in the heart of Baltimore.

South Plainfield, New Jersey

In 2025, the South Plainfield branch celebrated three employees on their 40-year work anniversary. Out of the 11 branches, it’s the largest facility with a 14,000-square-foot parts warehouse on 9.4 acres of land.

Winslow, New Jersey

The city was named after Edward Winslow, one of the passengers of the historic Mayflower ship that arrived in North America in 1620. Although it’s a smaller facility, it offers full services and counts with all the latest amenities.

Holbrook, New York

Founded in 1697 and located on Long Island, the branch supports the community that evolved from farmland into suburbs and has deep ties to the transportation and aerospace industries. Equipped to provide full services, it has the most walk-in parts customers out of all the locations.

Yonkers, New York

Often referred to as the “City of Seven Hills,” Yonkers is characterized by its hilly terrain. The Yonkers complex has a new motion picture facility named Lionsgate Studios, where our employees might appear as extras during filming.

Frackville, Pennsylvania

Placed in the heart of the Historic Coal Region, in the early 1900s this area would move an estimated 50,000 tons of coal daily long before the machines of today. The Frackville location provides parts to many local customers, including coal mine quarries.

Harrisburg, Pennsylvania

Located along the Pennsylvania Canal and later as a key stop along the Pennsylvania Railroad, Harrisburg has long been a hub of transportation and industry. The location is a full-service facility serving customers in the Dauphin County area.

Hatfield, Pennsylvania

Renowned for its mouthwatering cuisine — particularly its signature Hatfield hot dogs, which gained nationwide recognition for their exceptional taste and quality — Hatfield sits on 0.6 square miles but is one of Komatsu East’s larger facilities and offers full services.

State College, Pennsylvania

Technically located in Bellefonte — which was the second city in the United States to have streets lit with electricity, after New York City — State College is a smaller facility that also offers full-service support to its many local customers.

Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania

Wilkes-Barre is the oldest continuous Komatsu distributor in the United States. Originally operating under former ownership, the branch has been serving customers since 1941 and began selling Komatsu equipment nearly 40 years ago. ■
