THE ROAD FORWARD Asphalt Industry Comes to Grips With Goals of Net Zero Emissions
By Chuck MacDonald CEG CORRESPONDENT
Society, regulators, environmental groups and private citizens are clamoring for a greener future. They are seeking ways to reverse climate change and look for sustainable efforts to make that happen. The asphalt pavement industry, led by the efforts of the National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA), took a step in that direction by releasing a report that clearly defined goals, activities and gaps in technology that will be involved. The report is titled, “The Road Forward: A Vision for Net Zero Carbon Emissions for the Asphalt Pavement Industry.” The report outlines the actions aimed at enabling the industry to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. “This is one vision for the entire industry to point us where we need to go to proactively lower emis-
sions and accelerate beyond the industry’s past efforts in environmental stewardship and sustainability,” said J. Richard Willis, Ph.D., NAPA’s vice president for engineering, research and technology. Willis headed the industry coalition that authored the report. Acknowledging the challenges that lie ahead of reaching such an ambitious goal, Willis said, “We as an industry are going to step up and make a difference.” Big Goals The plan focuses on four major goals: • Achieve net zero carbon emissions during asphalt production and construction by 2050; • Partner with customers to reduce emissions through pavement quality, durability, longevity and efficiency standards by 2050; • Develop a net zero materials supply chain by 2050; and • Transition to electricity from renewable energy
4
providers in support of net zero carbon electricity by 2050 and reduce electrical intensities. The goals were reinforced with 19 tactics and eight research and implementation gaps. “I see asphalt longevity as the most important goal,” said Brittany Blacklidge of Blacklidge Emulsions. “One of the most environmentally friendly things we can do it to make our asphalt pavements last longer.” Blacklidge was part of the 21-person group that crafted the report. Longer-lasting pavements equate to fewer repairs, fewer trucks on the road and less emissions. The asphalt industry has highlighted long-life pavements in practice and in the research done by National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT) in Auburn, Ala., and at other entities. But reaching the lofty goals set by the report will require embracing new technology, including an increased reliance on electricity from renewable energy providers.
“We have been a family-owned business for nearly 100 years,” said Dan Gallagher of Gallagher Asphalt in Thornton, Ill. “We recognize that we will need to educate ourselves and to embrace new technology in order to reach these goals. When an equipment manufacturer asked us if we would be interested in an electric roller, we said, “Sure.’ Our team is now driving electric vehicles and have ordered an electric semi for hauling some of our mixes.” Gallagher, who was the vice president of the 21-member team that produced the report, recognized that some of the breakthrough technologies necessary to reach the goals are aspirational. “Don’t count us out,” he said. “Once a challenge like this is put out there, our industry can get innovative and tackle things that were previously believed to be impossible.” The asphalt pavement industry has been using many “green” practices like recycling and warm-mix asphalt for some time. A recent survey completed by NAPA and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) revealed that annually the industry reclaims 97 million tons of recycled asphalt pavement for current and future paving activities. Promising Developments Still, reaching goals of this magnitude will require technological leaps. Raven Adams, sustainability manager of Granite Construction in Watsonville, Calif., sees that some technological advances have shown promise while others will need significant outside resources to be developed. see FORWARD page 8

“I have seen some exciting developments involving agricultural waste and food bi-products in the asphalt industry—things like bio-based additives that function as binder rejuvenators that support the use of higher percentages of RAP content,” said Adams. “I’m fascinated by experiments with things like cashew nut shells being used as bio-additives to improve asphalt binder performance. What if we could make asphalt out of bio-based materials with-
out the use of any petroleum products? That’s the type of potential technology that intrigues me the most.” Adams sees continuing research and funding as crucial for these and other developing technologies. “I think lack of funding is the biggest barrier to developing the innovations needed to support net zero construction materials,” Adams said. “The scale of research and development we need is vast, and the industry cannot carry this burden alone. We will need collaboration between all types of stakehold-
8
ers and access to resources and funding to propel the kind of technological advancements needed to decarbonize the asphalt industry. I think the timeline for this transition will depend greatly on funding. If we can find the motivation and willingness to collaborate for the common good, we could achieve great things more quickly than some might imagine.” For more information about “The Road Forward,” visit AsphaltPavement.org/climate. WORLD OF ASPHALT LAUNCHES APP FOR 2022 SHOW IN NASHVILLE WORLD OF ASPHALT released the official app for the 2022 show in Nashville, Tenn., March 29 to 31, 2022.
Asphalt paving professionals can download the app from the Apple App Store or Google Play before leaving for the Music City, and plan their visit based
on the live map and exhibitor directory. “The World of Asphalt app is the easiest way for asphalt paving pros to make the best use of their time at the show,” said World of Asphalt Show Manager Brittany Weltcheff. “Not only does it help attendees plan before they get there, but it also helps them find their way around once on the show floor. Attendees who download it before they leave for Nashville can land ready with a plan.” World of Asphalt, and the co-located AGG1 Aggregates Academy & Expo, will showcase 500 exhibitors and 120 education sessions and asphalt paving pros can use the app to explore the show before they register. Registration is 15 percent off through Feb. 26. “Registering now not only guarantees the lowest price for asphalt paving professionals,” said Audrey Copeland, president and CEO of NAPA, majorityowner of the show. “It also gives attendees the best selection of education opportunities at the People, Plants and Paving Conference.” For more information on World of Asphalt, visit www.WorldOfAsphalt.com.
WOMEN OF ASPHALT RETURN TO IN-PERSON WORLD OF ASPHALT IN NASHVILLE WORLD OF ASPHALT is bringing back the Women of Asphalt Roundtable, a regular favorite roundtable discussion, when it returns in-person to the Nashville Music City Center March 29 to 31, 2022. Part of the People, Plants and Paving Conference organized by World of Asphalt and the National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA), Women of Asphalt brings six women together for a lively discussion to include the audience. “Women of Asphalt is both a great organization, as well as a great roundtable discussion, for everyone involved in the asphalt pavement industry,” said World of Asphalt Show Manager Brittany Weltcheff. “Too many people think this industry is mostly men, but women are finding many great opportunities to work in the industry and connect through this organization, which is critical for giving everyone a voice.” One of 120 education sessions available to asphalt paving professionals, the
Women of Asphalt Roundtable is part of a group of education sessions geared toward helping the industry find and retain the talent it needs to keep North America’s highways and byways moving. “The Women of Asphalt Roundtable is a session everyone at World of Asphalt can learn something new and benefit from,” said Audrey Copeland, president and CEO of NAPA, majority-owner of the show and a founding member of Women of Asphalt, currently serving as secretary of the organization’s board. “With a discussion focused on diversity and inclusion, attendees will gain insight into ways to attract and retain diverse employees.” Women of Asphalt have been representing the growing number of women leading and entering the asphalt paving industry since 2017, with founding members from NAPA, the Asphalt Pavement Alliance, the Asphalt Institute and multiple asphalt paving product makers. CALVIN GROUP
Michael Pentz (L) and Mark Pentz of the Calvin Group.
MARK PENTZ, PRESIDENT OF CALVIN GROUP INC., remembers telling his father, “I’m gonna sell big iron when I grow up.” His father would adamantly reply, “No, you’re not. You are going to get a professional job.” But that never stopped Pentz. After selling “big iron” for more than 30 years, he still has the same enthusiasm for the industry as when he was a kid. Growing up in central Pennsylvania, Pentz was in the business from a young age. His father, Marlin, ran a Blaw Knox, Case and Dynapac dealership. One of Mark’s first jobs was sweeping floors there. “I was a kid sweeping floors and doing every mundane job you could do in a dealership, but I grew attached to the equipment,” Pentz said. “Especially the road widener at that young age, probably because of its simple design.” He tried the “professional route” just out of college, and he didn’t enjoy it. That early passion for paving equipment never faded. It’s a familiar story in the industry and that passion is still front and center. Just ask him. He loves the thrill of finding equipment and building new relationships. “There is just something about a road widener,” he said with a grin. That’s also one of the reasons Pentz gives when asked why his company sells only paving equipment.
Scott Chalmers, territory sales manager of the Calvin Group.
After a decade selling dirt equipment, Pentz returned to his roots and started his own company, Calvin Group Inc., in 1996 with a focus on used commercial paving equipment, like the road widener. The company has broadened its market from its early days in Ohio and Pennsylvania to a national
piece of equipment,” Pentz said. “We’ve been very blessed to be able to have the relationships we do with our customers.” So far that philosophy has worked out well for Calvin Group, and its reputation for honesty and integrity has spread internationally with the name Calvin Group synonymous with quality used commercial paving equipment. That philosophy permeates Pentz’s family and the company, which includes son Michael, who is responsible for marketing and day-to-day details as well as sales, has been with the company more than a decade. The Calvin team also includes Scott Chalmers, who is a territory sales manager. Michael Pentz “We aren’t here to compete with anyCalvin Group Inc. one else. We are here to augment everyone’s business,” Michael said. “We honestly don’t look at other folks that sell paving equipment as competitors. We try to be an and even global focus, serving customers in North asset to everyone in the industry. tive prices,” and “The best way to sell is to make it convenient to buy,” have been in effect for 65 years. Over the years, equipment sold and rented by Hayden–Murphy has been on major projects across North America, including wind projects, the 35W bridge in Minneapolis, the new Stillwater, Minn., bridge, US Bank Stadium and countless others. In 2021, Hayden-Murphy announced a major expansion when it opened a new facility in Twin Ports (Proctor), Minn. “The large yard, rental and sales possibilities in this area are growing,” said Don Knackstedt, president of Hayden-Murphy, at an event held to celebrate with customers, staff and friends in 2022. “There is a need for equipment in the mining, forestry and aggregate sectors in this area, and we also have some really great people that will be working here.” Hayden-Murphy knows the challenges its customers are facing caused by supply chain issues, but the company is working hard to overcome those problems not only at its Twin Ports location, but at its other facilities, as well. “We know how hard it is to find equipment, but we have plenty of new equipment coming in 2022,” the company said. “We are committed to having plenty of inventory available in 2022.”
HAYDEN-MURPHY EQUIPMENT COMPANY is celebrating its 65th anniversary in 2022. The company was founded in 1957 by Hank Hayden and Chuck Murphy. The original location was at 4501 Hiawatha Ave. Minneapolis, in an old fire barn (there was still hay in the loft that was used to feed horses for the horsedrawn fire rigs of the day). At the time, the product lines ranged from water coolers to cranes, and just about everything in between. Then, in 1966, they relocated to their current location at 9301 E. Bloomington Freeway, Minneapolis, Minn. American Hoist and Derrick Company purchased Hayden-Murphy in 1979 from Bud Hayden (Hank’s son) and Chuck Murphy. They operated the company until 1984 as a factory store, when an investor group led by Jim Lupient purchased the company from American Hoist. In September 1988, Lupient hired Len Kirk as president and partner. Then in 2011, upon Jim’s passing, his wife Barbara, who had been a member of Hayden-Murphy’s board of directors for some time, assumed his ownership in the company. Two major themes have been the backbone of Hayden-Murphy since day one: customer support and employee retention. LAKE ERIE PORTABLE SCREENERS
All Pitbull machines and equipment are engineered and manufactured at the company’s headquarters in Lake City, Pa.
LAKE ERIE PORTABLE SCREENERS offers a full line of quality heavy-duty portable screeners, conveyors, static grizzly’s, feeders and separators for the mining, landscaping, recycling and construction industry. All Pitbull machines and equipment are engineered and manufactured at the company’s headquarters in Lake City, Pa. The Pitbull screeners and grizzly’s are built to separate or mix dirt, rock, topsoil, bark, sand, fertilizer, recyclables and many other types of material. To meet the demands of a wide variety of working environments, diesel power is standard with propane, gas and electric power options available for customized applications. The Pitbull screener line includes the Pitbull 2300, the Pitbull 2300B, and the Pitbull 5700 high power screening plant. All Pitbull screeners feature rugged construction and are manufactured with high quality structural tube steel. The Pitbull 2300 is equipped with high torque, hydraulic-driven conveyors, and world-class Deutz Tier IV-final diesel power. With hydraulic power to position axle and park jack, setup and tear down can be completed in 15 minutes or less. The Pitbull 2300B is lighter, more compact, and budget-minded compared with the Pitbull 2300 portable screener, with a size and weight that can be easily towed with a class 3 truck. The Pitbull 2300B is a box screener powered by a three-cylinder water cooled diesel engine. To maintain its light weight and lower cost, the 2300B comes without the conveyor system and four-cylinder engine.
Lake Erie Portable Screeners’ largest screening option, the Pitbull 5700 is a direct feed, severe-duty scalping screener equipped with a 60-in. wide conveyor system and 10-ft. x 7-ft. two-tier screen box, providing 140 sq. ft. of total screen area. Designed with durability, high output and ease of transport in mind, the Pitbull 5700 is manufactured with high quality structural steel tubing and heavy-duty H-beams. The Pitbull 5700 features two hydraulically driven conveyors that quickly and efficiently move material to the intended target. The conveyor’s operating 13-ft. tip height provides ample clearance for stockpiling materials or direct loading. Pitbull’s quick-change screen panels are available to screen soil, mulch, wood chips, asphalt, stone, gravel and more. Lake Erie Portable Screeners’ line of Pitbull Static Grizzly’s maintain the same rugged construction standards as the portable screener line and are available in 8-ft, 10-ft., 12-ft. and 14-ft. models. Designed to provide years of use in handling the toughest material, from rocks to demolition rubble, applications include work on construction and demolition sites, as well as landscape and municipal work. Pitbull Grizzly’s feature easy to adjust bolt-on culling bars, which can be quickly changed to accommodate different materials sizes. Bars are set on edge to promote self-cleaning while reducing the occurrence of processed material becoming lodged between the bars. For more information, visit www.pitbullscreeners.com.

FELLING TRAILERS
FELLING TRAILERS is showcasing its model FT-45-2LP paver, 26-ft. deck + 6-ft. double incline beavertail and air operated bi-fold ramps at World of Asphalt. These ramps are available on a wide range of air brake equipped trailers and allow the safe loading of most paving equipment with ease. Air operated ramps are far more reliable than those powered by an electric/hydraulic pump, making it a clear choice for many paving crews.”
