The Wyoming State Capitol is one of less than 20 current state capitols listed as a National Historical Landmark. And yet until recently, some feared the massive stone building with its domed top was perilously close to condemnation. “We were literally at a point if building code officials really wanted to they could have condemned the Capitol,” said Suzanne Norton, Wyoming state architectural project manager. “We did some smoke evacuation modeling and learned that if you didn’t get out in less than four minutes you probably wouldn’t have made it out.” Now, work is under way on a project budgeted at $299 million to restore and renovate both the Capitol, built in three phases from 1888 through 1917, and the newer neighboring Herschler Building, built in 1983. It’s involved moving 770 employees to temporary spaces. “We’ve been trying to do this project since at least 2003,” Norton said. “We started saving money in 2003 to fund one big repair project. Someone said this is just a bandaid. Let’s just hold onto that money. In 2008, we started a savings account. On other construction projects where we saved money, that money reverted to

New Mexico Officials Celebrate Elephant Butte Dam’s 100 Years ELEPHANT BUTTE, N.M. (AP) Elephant Butte Dam officially turned 100 years old and officials are celebrating with everything from tours of the towering structure to a fireworks show and pie-eating contest. Neal Brown operates Elephant Butte Lake’s three marinas and the Dam Site Recreation Area. He told the Albuquerque Journal that it’s fitting to celebrate the dam’s centennial because it has had a lasting impact on the state. “All over southern New Mexico, people have benefited from the dam, not only from flood prevention but also through irrigation and recreation,” Brown said. When completed in 1916, Elephant Butte Dam was the second-largest dam in the world, surpassed only by the Aswan

Dam in Egypt. The dam provides flood control for the lower Rio Grande and irrigation water to 178,000 acres of farmland in New Mexico and Texas. It also created the state’s largest lake and has been a playground for boaters, anglers and hikers for decades. Congress authorized construction of Elephant Butte Dam in February 1905. The Bureau of Reclamation oversaw construction of the dam over a five-year period. During construction, two towns sprang up: one where workers lived and merchants set up shop and another above and east of the dam site where administrators and other officials were housed. There also was a hotel on the hill. At the height of the project, about 4,000 people occupied the

towns. Brown’s company, Lago Rico Inc., has been working to preserve many of the buildings that were built by Civilian Conservation Corps crews in the 1930s, most of which make up the Elephant Butte Historic District. Federal and state officials along with representatives of the International Boundary and Water Commission and local irrigation districts plan to gather next week to celebrate the centennial. There will be more tours of the inside and top of the dam and a special plaque was unveiled on Oct. 19. Case Unveils G Series Wheel Loaders at Tomahawk Facility Case Construction Equipment unveiled its new G series wheel loader to the press at its 500-plus acre Case Tomahawk Experience Center located in Tomahawk, Wis. The unveiling kicked off with a presentation by Andrew Dargatz, brand marketing manager, wheel loaders, Case Construction Equipment. “This is a very exciting time for many groups throughout CNH Industrial,” said Dargatz. “Our teams represent the best in hydraulics thermal engineering, ergonomics, and our teams have been perfecting SCR engine technology both in on-road and off-road technology for years. Our world-class manufacturing plant in Fargo, N.D., and of course our commercial group work with dealers and customers to better understand market demand and opportunities. Our groups work together as a cohesive team to ensure that the G Series wheel loaders lowers the total cost of ownership.” The all-new G Series wheel loader line consists of seven new models scaled for a variety of applications, from supply yards, building construction and agriculture, to quarries and mass excavation. These loaders address key factors to lower the total cost of ownership. Productivity and Efficiency “Wheel loaders are the ultimate production machines, said Dargatz. “Whether they are running 12 or 14 hours a day in batch plants, pits and quarries, loading trucks at feed lots all day at corporate dairy farms or keeping us safe, running all day and all night in the coldest of conditions plowing streets and parking lots.” With this in mind, Case designed the G Series wheel loader FPT engines that feature SCR technology to meet Tier IV Final standards. Case was the first to introduce SCR into heavy construction equipment and has the industry’s most practical SCR experience in the field, according to the manufacturer. Each loader leverages the best in hydraulic and electronic technologies to fully optimize machine output and performance, providing a comprehensive solution that achieves exponential fuel savings compared to the competition

and older equipment. These systems combine to provide the operator with a choice of four operating modes that best match engine output to application, ensuring the machine only expends as much fuel and power as required for the job. SCR also allows the engine to breathe cooler and cleaner, ensuring optimal productivity and helping to minimize wear associated with excessive heat and the see CASE page 10

possibility of thermal events. As an aftertreatment system, there is no recirculation of gasses, no excessive exhaust temperatures related to burning off captured particulate matter and no downtime for regeneration. With the exception of adding diesel exhaust fluid (DEF), there are no new or intensive maintenance activities required of the system. This all results in a greater percentage of the machine’s power and fuel burn going to productive efforts, according to Case. Overall Quality of Operation The G Series wheel loaders feature the most intuitive, comfortable and easy to operate/manage environment of any Case wheel loader ever produced. Inspired heavily by automotive design, the new cab features the latest in electro-hydraulic controls, ergonomic design and operator interfaces that make operation simpler and more efficient. This includes a solid-state controller that provides software control over electrical power distribution and basic vehicle functions — all while eliminating fuses and relays, and significantly lowering the amount of wiring throughout the machine. A membrane keypad replaces a series of rocker switches for common machine functions, and a new steering console mimics the driver controls — from lights and wipers to turn signals — found in most cars/trucks, according to Case. “The G Series leverages ergonomics to improve operator comfort, combat operator fatigue and overall increases the operator’s efficiency and productivity and provides the intuitive practical technology that allows the operator to quickly climb in the cab understand all the benefits and resources at their disposal, ” said Dargatz.

An optional five-speed transmission with lock-up torque converter is available on this 721G as well as the 821G and 921G wheel loaders.

A new, one-piece rounded windshield, a rear grid defroster and redesigned external mirrors increase visibility to all sides of the machine. These loaders also feature an allnew HVAC system that achieves the fastcab cool-down, and excellent heating/defrosting/defogging capabilities. The operator environment is further accentuated with new automotive-style plastics on the inside that are more durable and resistant to scratches, and easier to clean. A new Bluetooth radio with full streaming, satellite radio (with optional equipment) and music device compatibility also is available to enhance the operator experience.

Total Cost of Ownership Every system in the new G Series wheel loaders is engineered together to help produce the greatest amount of production, at the highest rate of uptime, for the lowest total cost of operation. Much of this is achieved with the efficiencies of the engine and related systems, the intuitiveness of the operator environment and the ease of service, according to the manufacturer. “Maintenance is a key factor of the total equation. Over three years ago, Case led the way when they introduced ProCare,” said Dargatz. “ProCare is a comprehensive program that addresses maintenance, warranty

and telematics. It embodies our commitment to our customers to lower total cost of ownership.” ProCare includes a three-year Advanced Case SiteWatch telematics subscription, a three-year/3,000-hour full-machine factory warranty and a three-year/3,000-hour planned maintenance contract. The Case 521G wheel loader features a standard limited slip differential that equally supplies torque to each side of the axle and automatically applies additional torque to the gripping tire.

The 521G through the 921G wheel loaders, including this 621G, feature the Case-exclusive mid-mounted Case cooling module, which features coolers positioned in a cube design that ensures access to clean and cool ambient air, while also limiting debris buildup and providing easy access for routine cleaning.

Terex Stand Alone Core Barrel: No Need for Auger Drill

The Terex stand alone core barrel increases productivity when drilling hard rock, such as limestone material.

Terex Utilities announced a new auger tool for digger derricks — the Terex stand alone core barrel. It fits directly onto a standard Kelly bar and can be stowed like a standard auger on the boom, eliminating the need for any attachments or having to remove for transportation. When a flighted auger will no longer do the job, the new Terex stand alone core barrel can increase productivity when drilling hard rock, such as limestone material. For applications requiring drilling to begin at ground level, a removable pilot bit can be used to stabilize the stand alone core barrel in order to start a hole. Once initial penetration is achieved, the pilot bit can be removed. The optional pilot bit is important for achieving a straight starter track. In addition, the stand alone core barrel is designed for easy plug removal, increasing drilling productivity. A unique tooth pat-

tern allows the rock plug to easily fall out of the barrel when the operator ratchets the rotation of the tool. Other core barrels require workers to physically hammer the core out of the barrel. “Terex is the only digger derrick manufacturer that also manufactures tooling. We understand how to design auger tools for maximum productivity and efficiency for the entire application. The new stand alone core barrel is an example of applying a new concept to barrel tools for better job site performance,” said Dale Putman, auger tooling product support manager. The stand alone core barrel is available in various diameters ranging from 18 to 30 in. (45.7 to 76.2 cm) and features a barrel wall of 5/8 in. (1.5 cm). The heavy duty hex hub is either 21/2 or 2-5/8 in. (6.3 or 6.6 cm) and it comes with a Dom ST5 23/4 in. (7 cm) shaft. The overall length of the tool is 104 in. (264 cm). Access to the C-10 bullet

teeth provides for easy removal and replacement. Terex Utilities completed field testing of the stand alone core barrel in June 2016 with Big Sandy RECC out of Eastern Kentucky. “We occasionally will have rock holes that our standard augers will not cut,” said Kirby Castle, line superintendent. “The Terex stand alone core barrel cut

through the rock in a matter of minutes. We like the fact that the auger will cut through the rock that we encounter and that it will save us some time on the jobsite.” For more information, visit www.terex.com/utilities. New Cat Tilt Buckets Handle Precision Grading Tasks

The tilt buckets are equipped with two horizontal cylinders — sized to provide forces matched to the machine — that allow the operator to position the bucket and maintain grade without moving the machine.

A new line of Cat tilt buckets is available for Cat crawler-excavator models 311 to 325 and for wheel excavator models M314 to M322. The new buckets, available in both pin-on and coupler configurations, hydraulically tilt 45 degrees from vertical, right and left, to provide added capability when working on angled surfaces or performing precise grading. The buckets install easily and are designed for such applications as ditch cleaning, landscaping and various construction tasks. In addition, the buckets can be used for conventional excavating in lowimpact soils, including top soil and clay. The tilt buckets are equipped with two horizontal cylinders — sized to provide forces matched to the machine — that allow

the operator to position the bucket and maintain grade without moving the machine. The horizontal-cylinder design allows a low-profile for the bucket, while protecting the cylinders from material flow. Grade-Control Ready The new buckets are drilled and tapped to accept the bolt-on sensor and clips required to make them “plug-and-play” compatible with Cat Grade Control 3D. Grade control provides visual and audio positioning guidance for the operator via the machine’s incab monitor, enhancing the speed, accuracy and material-movement efficiency of excavating and grading tasks.

Bucket Protection Tilt buckets feature a reversible, wearresistant, bolt-on cutting edge that protects the base edge and provides extended service life. In addition, bucket surfaces subject to heavy wear, such as corners, are protected with replaceable, weld-in inserts of premium-grade steel (400 BHN). Caterpillar supports its work tools with a comprehensive range of pre- and after-sales services, from advice about work-tool selection to operator training, equipment management, and financial and insurance products. Firms’ Relationship Grows Specially designed for the new small-frame G-Series skid steers (312GR, 314G, 316GR, 318G) and compact track loader (CTL) (317G), the grading-heel bucket attachments are ideal for customers performing final grading applications.

John Deere is expanding its lineup of easy-to-use Worksite Pro attachments with the new grading-heel buckets. Specially designed for the new small-frame G-Series skid steers (312GR, 314G, 316GR, 318G) and compact track loader (CTL) (317G), the grading-heel bucket attachments are ideal for customers performing final grading applications. The grading-heel buckets are similar in style and dimensions as standard dirt buckets, but feature a squared-off heel for backdragging applications. The bottoms of the buckets are smooth, with no lifts or edges, which allow the bucket to create a flat surface with ease. These features make the grading-heel bucket an ideal option for a variety of jobs, including land shaping, dirt leveling and installation of new landscape for sodding, irrigation and drainage. The grading-heel buckets are available in two sizes — 60- and 66-in. (152 and 167 cm) — for use with most compact models in the GSeries lineup. “We’re seeing construction spaces getting tighter, especially in the residential building

industry, and customers are seeing the value of operating smaller machines in these areas,” said Gregg Zupancic, product marketing manager, John Deere Construction & Forestry. “Add an attachment like the new grading-heel bucket, and contractors can work comfortably and efficiently in tight quarters without sacrificing productivity.” Worksite Pro buckets, like the gradingheel options, are ideal ways to take advantage of skid steers’ and CTLs’ steep dump angle and high bucket rollback, according to the manufacturer. With the universal, self-cleaning QuikTatch easy attachment system found on all John Deere skid steers, CTLs and compact excavators, the machine can easily add and remove the grading-heel bucket in no time. The new attachment series also is backed by John Deere parts, service and warranty coverage. For more information, visit www.johndeere.com. $57M Yellowstone Dam, Bypass Best Options for Fish

RUN STRONG.

By Matthew Brown ASSOCIATED PRESS

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) U.S. government agencies plan to push ahead with a $57 million dam and fish bypass on Montana’s Yellowstone River despite concerns among scientists that it won't meet its goal of helping an ancient fish species, officials said. A new 3,700-page, government-sponsored study of the project calls for no significant changes from an earlier proposal that a federal judge had blocked, according to representatives of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Bureau of Reclamation. The dam northeast of Glendive would provide irrigation water for more than 50,000 acres of cropland in eastern Montana and western North Dakota. The accompanying bypass is meant to allow endangered, dinosaur-like pallid sturgeon to reach upstream spawning grounds, by traveling up a two-mile-long channel. But an independent scientific-review panel and Montana wildlife officials have questioned whether it would work, since no such project has been built with sturgeon in mind. In response to those concerns, government officials cited research that showed pallid sturgeon elsewhere in the country successfully using natural side channels and bypasses that were built for other purposes. That suggests “a high likelihood” the new bypass would work, according to the government study. Its design would mimic the characteristics of a natural channel. Since early last century a rock weir across the Yellowstone has blocked sturgeon in the Yellowstone from moving upstream, preventing them from reproducing even as the population dwindled to just 125 fish. The dam and bypass, first proposed in 2010, were meant to solve that dilemma. Pallid sturgeon was listed as an endangered species in 1990. Believed to date to the days when Tyrannosaurus rex walked the Earth, the population has declined sharply as dams and other obstructions were built along the Missouri River system, which includes the Yellowstone. U.S. District Judge Brian Morris blocked construction of the dam and bypass as it was set to begin last year, forcing the agencies involved to do an extensive environmental impact analysis. Government attorneys must take the finalized proposal back to Morris before construction proceeds, said Army Corps project manager Tiffany Vanosdall. Defenders of Wildlife and the Natural Resources Defense Council have sued to stop the project. They argue the best option would be to remove the existing rock weir and provide irrigation to area farmers using pumps in the river. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will review the new environmental study. A final decision by the bureau and corps is expected in December. UNTIMED POWER BOOST: STRENGTH ON YOUR SCHEDULE We know what it’s like to sit in the operator’s seat when you hit solid rock. The power boost button on most excavators can deliver the extra force you need to break through – but only in short bursts. We knew there had to be a better way, so we took our jobsite experience and collaborated with our engineers. The result is an untimed power boost that comes standard in all KOBELCO conventional excavators from the SK210LC to the SK500LC. It provides all the extra muscle you need continuously so you can power through the toughest jobs without interruption.

Retired Caterpillar Inc. Chairman, CEO, Glen Barton Passes Away at 77 Glen Barton, former Caterpillar Inc. chairman and chief executive officer (CEO), died Oct. 24 in Peoria, Ill., at age 77. Mr. Barton retired in 2004 after nearly 43 years of Caterpillar service, spending the last five as chairman and CEO. “The Caterpillar family is extremely saddened by Glen’s passing,” said Caterpillar Chairman and CEO Doug Oberhelman. “Glen’s legacy of leadership extends far beyond Caterpillar’s walls. His commitment to Peoria and our communities was remarkable. I’ll start with his Caterpillar leadership. He rose through the Caterpillar ranks, starting in 1961 as a college graduate trainee. Under his leadership, Caterpillar fully embraced 6 Sigma. It brought remarkable improvements throughout the company, including an intense focus on quality and safety. We continue that focus today, and 6 Sigma remains our foundation for continuous improvement. We are forever indebted to him for his commitment to making Caterpillar a stronger company. “And just as important is his unprecedented generosity to the Peoria area. Glen’s dedication and hard work will continue to leave a positive impact for many, many future generations. Together with his wife Polly, Glen was the epitome of philanthropic leaders. He was the driving force behind Quest Charter Academy and a tireless leader and supporter of the Peoria Zoo, the Peoria Playhouse, WTVP and Illinois Central College. Our deepest condolences are extended to Polly and the entire Barton family.” Mr. Barton joined Caterpillar in 1961 and held numerous marketing and general management positions. After two tours with Caterpillar Overseas S.A. in Geneva, Switzerland, where he served in various marketing capacities from 1964 to 1968, and from 1972 to 1975, Mr. Barton became manager for South American Sales. In 1977, he became manager of Merchandising Division General Offices. Mr. Barton moved to Mentor, Ohio, in 1983 to become the U.S. sales and product support manager for the industrial lift truck division of Caterpillar. From 1984 through 1986, he was manager of Products Control, involved in product development and strategic planning. In 1987, he was elected a

vice president of Caterpillar and president of Solar Turbines Incorporated, a wholly owned Caterpillar subsidiary in San Diego, Calif. In 1989, he became executive vice president with responsibility for worldwide marketing. Effective July 1, 1990, Mr. Barton became group president with responsibility for the design, development and production of most of Caterpillar’s extensive line of forest, mining and construction equipment. His responsibilities also included marketing and sales operations in North America, South America, Latin America and Japan. On Feb. 1, 1999, he was named chairman and chief executive officer. Mr. Barton, a native of Alton, Mo., graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1961 with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. He completed the Stanford University Executive Program in 1977. He previously served on the Dean’s Engineering Advisory Council at the University of Missouri-Columbia and

the boards of directors of Inco Limited and Newmont Mining Corporation. He also was a global advisor to The Conference Board and a trustee of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award Foundation. Mr. Barton also served as a member of the Business Roundtable, the Illinois Business Roundtable and the U.S. President’s Export Council. In 2012, Mr. Barton was recognized for helping pave the way for the company’s leadership in the global mining industry with his induction into the National Mining Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame credits him with the foresight to more heavily involve Caterpillar in mining: “Glen Barton’s passion changed the mining industry. His leadership made Caterpillar the world’s leading provider of mining equipment by creating the roots that support the organization today.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s website at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)

Caelus Energy Confirms Large-Scale Discovery on the North Slope of Alaska Caelus Energy Alaska LLC announced that its subsidiary, Caelus Energy Alaska Smith Bay LLC, has made a significant light oil discovery on its Smith Bay state leases on the North Slope of Alaska. Based on two wells drilled in early 2016, as well as 126 sq. mi. (326 km) of existing 3D seismic, Caelus estimates the oil in place under the current leasehold to be 6 billion barrels. Furthermore, the Smith Bay fan complex may contain upwards of 10 billion barrels of oil in place when the adjoining acreage is included. Due to the favorable fluids contained in the reservoir, Caelus expects to achieve recovery factors in the range of 30 to 40 percent. Additional drilling and seismic should improve estimates of oil in place via delineation of undrilled fan lobes and channel complexes imaged on the original 3D seismic. Caelus CEO Jim Musselman said, “This discovery could be really exciting for the state of Alaska. It has the size and scale to play a meaningful role in sustaining the Alaskan oil business over the next three or four decades. Fiscal stability going forward is critical for a project of this magnitude. Without the state tax credit programs, none of this would’ve happened, and I’m not sure Caelus would’ve come to explore in Alaska. We’re proof that the credit programs work.” The Smith Bay development has the potential to provide 200,000 barrels per day of light, highly mobile oil, which would both increase Trans-Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS) throughput volumes and reduce the average viscosity of oil

in the pipeline, extending its long term viability. The two exploration wells, Caelus-Tulimaniq #1 (“CT-1”) and step-out Caelus-Tulimaniq #2 (“CT-2”), targeted a large Brookian submarine fan complex spanning over 300 sq. mi. (777 km). The fan was successfully drilled and logged in both wells, encountering an extension of the accumulation 5.25 mi. (8 km) northwest of the CT-1 discovery at the CT2 location. Gross hydrocarbon columns in excess of 1,000 ft. (305 m) were encountered in each well; with CT-1 and CT2 logging 183 and 223 ft. (56 and 68 m) of net pay, respectively. Neither well was flow tested due to seasonal time constraints, but extensive sidewall coring and subsequent lab analyses confirm the presence of reservoir-quality sandstones containing light oil ranging from 40 to 45 degree API gravity. Caelus is currently planning an appraisal, program, which will include drilling an additional appraisal well and acquiring a new 3D seismic survey over outboard acreage. The appraisal program will enable Caelus to confirm reservoir continuity, optimize future drilling locations, and ultimately increase reserves. In parallel, Caelus is studying and planning the facilities’ build-out, which will process and transport the oil to TAPS. For more information, visit http://caelusenergy.com/. The project, designed to improve highway capacity, is currently on schedule and on budget.

About 19 subcontractors are assigned to the project. Between 20 and 25 construction workers are on the job each day in various locations. The project is located in rural New Mexico. It spans 31 mi. (50 km) and consists of two separate projects. The first phase, finished on June 22 of this year, started at milepost 22 and proceeded east to milepost 31 near the junction of U.S.-62/180. The current second phase is from milepost 0 (U.S.-82) east to milepost 22. It includes cold mill and overlay of the driving lanes, installation of 8-ft. (2.4 m) shoulders, replacement, cleaning or repairing of existing drainage culverts and improvements at key intersections. Intersections are being reconstructed to provide better sight distance and mitigate congestion. In addition, merging lanes are being built at major intersections. The project also adds new passing lanes to make the highway safer. The improvements are designed to accommodate heavy oil field traffic in the area. “This was one of the most heavily traveled in southeastern New Mexico,” Arnett said. The last maintenance project on NM 529 took place in 2007.

Intersections are being reconstructed to provide better sight distance and mitigate congestion.

Historic Wyoming Capitol Undergoing Unusual Renovations CAPITOL from page 14

for use by the statewide elected officials when not in use by the Legislature. Contractors also have reopened the original quarry from which the building stone was mined to quarry an additional 15,000 cu. ft. (424.75 cu m) of sandstone for the project. There also is work to be done on the dome — one of only 13 state capitols to feature domes with gold leaf. “When the Capitol was constructed the dome was covered with copper, over time the copper discolored,” Norton said. “The dome was gilded with gold leaf the first time in 1900 and has been regilded several times since, most recently in 2009, at a cost of approximately $1.3 million. The gold leaf is purchased in rolls 67 feet long and 3.5 inches wide. Less than one ounce of gold is needed to cover the entire dome. The dome is visible from all roads entering the city.” The top organization of the cornices are also made of metal, requiring a contractor to erect “special scaffolding” to try to figure out how to save as much of the decorative parts as possible. Perhaps one of the most significant and unusual aspects of the project involves restoring the view to and from the Capitol. It means demolition of the center of the Herschler Building. “The center of the Herschler Building was a four-story atrium,” Norton said. “It is a massive space, with a skylight at the top. It is inefficient space, and expensive to heat and cool and most importantly, it blocked the view of the Capitol from North Capitol Avenue and it also blocked the view from the Capitol to the historic train depot. “Right now there is a 480-ton crane on the property demolishing the center of the Herschler Building. And there is a whole bunch of shoring sitting on top of the underground parking garage to hold up that load.” Other equipment includes backhoes, lifts, excavators and excavator-mounted jackhammers The project is set to be complete in advance of the 2019 Legislature. The construction project is expected to add 1,000 jobs in Laramie

County, and when finished, is expected to generate $1.35 million in additional revenue from tourism. Most importantly, the project will restore a landmark known not so much for its architecture, but for its significance in history. “We became a state in 1890 just a few months after our capitol was complete. The constitution was signed in one of the rooms we are restoring,” Norton said. “Wyoming is known as the ‘Equality State’ because of the rights women have traditionally enjoyed here. Wyoming women were the first in the nation to vote, serve on juries and hold public

office. The Wyoming Territorial Legislature gave women the right to vote late in 1869, and Gov. John Campbell signed it into law on Dec. 10 — 50 years before the rest of the nation. In 1889 the Wyoming Constitutional Convention delegates retained women’s suffrage by incorporating it into a provision of the Constitution that was debated and signed in the Supreme Court Chamber in the Capitol.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s website at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.) Volvo Helps Extract Rich Reward at Treasure Mountain Cited as a rival to the Italian marbles of classic notoriety, Colorado’s Yule marble is celebrated as one of the purest marbles ever quarried, and has adorned many legendary monuments and buildings, including the Lincoln Memorial and Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Although its almost snowy whiteness and uniformity once made it a sought after stone, quarrying the Yule marble was deemed uneconomical due to its remote location. By the midtwentieth century, production in the state ceased and remained dormant for nearly 50 years. However, excavation of the exquisite stone is experiencing a renaissance, due to Carrara-based R.E.D. Graniti. As the leading stone producer in Italy, R.E.D. Graniti assumed ownership of the Colorado Yule marble quarry in 2011. R.E.D Graniti operates the quarry, located in the aptly named city of Marble, Colo., under the name of Colorado Stone Quarries. Today, the company holds all mineral rights to a 26-hectacre section of land, known as Treasure Mountain, rich in high-quality marble. Diamond in the Rough During the assessment of the quarry, general manager Daniele Treves and quarry master, Stefano Mazzucchelli located a new vein of stone. To access this new source of stone, the Lincoln Gallery, named after the Lincoln Memorial, was unearthed. This new vein, Calacatta Lincoln, is now the topselling stone worldwide for R.E.D. Graniti.

“We calculate that we have 1.9 million [cubic yards] of marble remaining here,” said Treves. Round the Clock To meet the growing demand of the Calacatta Lincoln marble, Colorado Stone Quarries employs a crew of 40 in its year-round operations. Because the stone is extracted with precision cuts, rather than blasting, the company relies on a fleet of 30 machines that includes Volvo L350F, L330E, L120E and L90E wheel loaders, an ECR58D compact short swing radius excavator, EC340D and EC480D crawler excavators and an A35D articulated hauler. Inside the Lincoln Gallery, crews work on two levels. On the lower level, after the initial cuts are made, a Volvo EC340D or EC480D excavator slides deftly into place and uses its bucket teeth To meet the growing demand of the Calacatta Lincoln marble, Colorado Stone Quarries employs a crew of 40 in its year-round operations.

The company relies on a fleet of 30 machines that includes Volvo L350F, L330E, L120E and L90E wheel loaders; an ECR58D compact short swing radius excavator; EC340D and EC480D crawler excavators; and an A35D articulated hauler.

The Volvo L350F wheel loader handles the marble blocks with ease due to impressive lifting forces.

to loosen the stones, gently placing them onto the gallery floor for the L350F wheel loader to load out. Once the large blocks are removed, a Volvo L90E wheel loader with pallet forks repositions the saw for the next round of cuts. On the second level, the marble blocks are skillfully sliced from the rock face and extracted using the block forks on the L350F. The two Volvo L350F wheel loaders are the mine’s workhorses, clocking up to 10 hours a day. “Both of the L350F loaders have the Volvo standard duty block handler kit and forks, which can carry up to 65,000 pounds,” said Troy Langston, of the Volvo CE dealership Power Equipment Company, based in near-by Grand Junction, Colo. The L350F is known for its high capacity and outstanding rim pull. The standard Volvo block handler kit boosts capacity for lifting and withstands the rugged conditions of block handling. Because these loaders use the same linkage systems as standard machines, they can easily swap tools and be used as bucket handlers to load trucks; an advantage over competitor machinery equipped with shortened booms.

Solid Selling Points Colorado Stone Quarries replaced its entire fleet of equipment when it purchased the mines. When the operations management reviewed bids, bottom line price was not the only factor taken into consideration. Total cost of ownership and dedicated dealer support influenced the decision to buy Volvo machines, especially due to the heavy duty cycling work of the loaders and the remote location. Langston added that the Volvo 3.5 gal. (16 L) engine produces higher torque at a low rpm. “On fuel costs alone, Colorado Stone Quarries can save $70,000 over four years on each L350F,” he said. Fuel economy sold the loaders to management, but the Volvo cab won the praise of the machine operators. “I move rock for 10 hours each day, so I like the comfort of the Volvo wheel loader,” said operator David Porter. “My back doesn’t hurt, and it is easy to steer with the joystick controls. We are picking up blocks weighing more than 50,000 pounds and the power is still there.” Two Power Equipment Company service technicians carry see VOLVO page 44

Sennebogen Electric-Drive Supplies Worry-Free Power When Buijs Groot-Ammers Overslag B.V. bought its ninth Sennebogen material handler, the company chose an electric-drive model for the second time to keep the environment healthy and to save on fuel costs. “Once electric, always electric,” said engineer Henk van den Dool. Buijs Groot-Ammers specializes in the trans-shipment of bulk and general cargo, especially raw materials for the feed industry, and Sennebogen purpose-built material handlers are an indispensable part of its business. The first electric model it tried was the Sennebogen 825 that put in about 15,000 hours within a short period of time without any problems. When the material handling demand increased, Buijs Groot-Ammers opted to upsize to a crawler-mounted Sennebogen 830 electric-drive. The 830 has a maximum boom range of 55 ft. 8 in. (17 m), compared to 42 ft. 7 in. (13 m) for the 825, which allows operators to reach the farthest edges of a barge without moving. In fact the 830 is now installed at the edge of the pier. “We decided to purchase an electric material handler again because it is completely emission-free and, ultimately, it saves money. As well, environmentally sound practices promote goodwill in the communi-

ty,” said Wim Buijs, director of operations. Being located on the historic Aa River, the Buijs Groot-Ammers operation is particularly sensitive to environmental contamination. With the electric-drive Sennebogen, not only

are there zero emissions, but there is zero chance of fuel leaks and the administrative nightmare that goes along with them. Of course, the electric-drive also contributes to fuel savings. Buijs reports a 50

percent reduction in operating costs when compared to a diesel-powered machine. But it’s not just the fuel savings. There’s no downtime required for refueling. Maintenance intervals for electric machines are significantly longer, and the hydraulic components last longer than in diesel models. Buijs also can hear the benefits going electric. “The new Sennebogen is significantly quieter than our diesel machines,” he said. Operators appreciate the reduced vibration and noise of the electric drive material handler. In the elevated maXcab, they have the best possible view of the entire worksite for increased safety. A series of cameras and a comprehensive lighting system provide a 360 degree visibility day or night. With the recent enhancements to the maXcab, including optimized cab, comfort seat and ergonomically arranged joysticks and controls, the electric drive Sennebogen makes an ideal workplace, according to the company. Cummins Redefines Medium-Bore Engine Performance Cummins Inc. unveiled the next generation X12 Series engine, anticipating the productivity and performance needs of the North American Class 8 truck market. With the highest power-to-weight ratio of any engine in the 10-to-16-L class, the X12 enables regional-haul, intracity delivery and vocational trucks to operate at maximum payload with lower fuel consumption and more responsive driving than previously experienced from an engine of this size. The 12-L engine is rated up to 475 hp, and provides up to 1,700 lb.-ft. peak torque at

size and lower weight, but importantly, we achieved this with no compromise to structural strength, so that our next-generation 12liter comes with all the durability associated with a Cummins Heavy-Duty engine,” said Jim Fier, Cummins vice president — engineering, speaking at the X12 unveiling which took place at the Transportation Research Center (TRC) in Ohio. “We are really excited about how the next-generation X12 will complement our engine portfolio and provide to our OEM part-

“During the design process for the X12, we evaluated every opportunity to reduce size and lower weight, but importantly, we achieved this with no compromise to structural strength, so that our next-generation 12-liter comes with all the durability associated with a Cummins Heavy-Duty engine.” Jim Fier Cummins Inc.

1,000 rpm, which remains available to over 1,400 rpm, reducing the need for gear shifting and giving better low-speed lugging on grades. The architecture of the X12 results in a low engine weight — just 2,050 lbs. — enabled by a sculptured block design, which allows unnecessary mass to be removed, but retains high rigidity. Substantial weight savings also are achieved by the use of highstrength composite materials for the oil pan and valve cover. “During the design process for the X12, we evaluated every opportunity to reduce

ners a compact yet capable engine — an ideal fit for shorter-nose conventional cabs — while very low weight makes the engine a great power solution for sleeper trucks sensitive to front axle weight,” said Fier. A major installation and weight advantage also is realized with the new Single Module aftertreatment, designed by Cummins Emission Solutions to be 40 percent lighter and up to 60 percent smaller than current aftertreatment designs, according to the manufacturer. Customer-focused innovation resulted in a Single Cam In Head (SCIH) design with

roller valvetrain and high-efficiency intake ports to minimize complexity. The latest version of Cummins VGT Turbocharger incorporates reliability and durability enhancements, to boost transient response, and combines with an integrated low-weight engine brake, to provide strong engine braking at lower rpm. The next-generation X12 Series will be in full produc-

tion in 2018, following the completion of an extensive field-test program. The engines continue to benefit from ongoing fuel-efficiency improvements, and will be compliant with Phase 1 greenhouse gas (GHG) and fuelefficiency standards, to be fully implemented in 2017. The ISX12 G engine will continue as the heavy-duty platform for natural gas. Jamestown-Built The next-generation X12 will be built at the Cummins Jamestown Engine Plant alongside the latest X15 Efficiency Series and X15 Performance Series, as part of an

expanded X family occupying a 350 hp-to605 hp rating range. The X12 Series will offer a range of application-adapted ratings for regional-haul, vocational, refuse, motorcoach and fire trucks spanning the 350 hpto-475 hp range. For specific restricted applications, a higher 500-hp rating also will be available. Similar to the X15, the X12 will incorporate Cummins ADEPT, SmartCoast and predictive cruise control (PCC) functions for further fuel savings. Useful options for vocational and emergency truck applications include front power take-off (FEPTO), rear power take-off drive (REPTO) and a side-mounted drive. Over-the-Air Connections The X12 will be ready from the factory to take advantage of advanced solutions using Cummins Connected Calibrations family of applications, which will empower fleets to improve productivity when connected to a capable telematics system without a visit to the service bay. And with solutions using Cummins Connected Tuning applications, the X12 Series can be adjusted and optimized over the air, for improved costs of operation — without a trip to the service bay. A significant contribution to improving truck uptime is realized with Connected Diagnostics enabled through the engine's electronic control module (ECM) and the telematics system. Connected Diagnostics automatically processes fault code data, sending instant notifications from Cummins detailing probable cause, and providing recommended actions. The expert advice delivered by email, app or web portal enables the fleet manager to make informed decisions about continuing truck operations and when to schedule a service visit for the most convenient time, maximizing uptime.
