The first of several phases to completely reconstruct the I-35/I-240 Crossroads Interchange has begun in south Oklahoma City under the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT). This phase started in May and is expected to continue until the summer of 2017. The $12 million contract with financial incentives for early completion was awarded to an Allen Contracting Inc./Shell Construction Inc. joint venture. Both companies are based in Oklahoma City. The project includes federal funding and about $1 million in state funding. “This phase is unique because it is essentially ‘reversing’ an on- and off-ramp,” said Cody Boyd, ODOT media and public relations. “This will convert Santa Fe Ave. to a full interchange to accommodate the I-240 traffic that currently uses the existing interchange at Shields Blvd., which must be removed in a future phase in 2019 due to its close proximity to I-35.” This phase also includes construction of new decorative retaining walls along I-240 under Shields Blvd. ODOT is currently working with the local business community on the design for the artwork. Specifically, this first phase reconstructs I-240 from Santa Fe Ave. about .5 mi. (.8 km) east past Shields Blvd. and constructs a new westbound I-240 off-ramp to Santa Fe and a new eastbound on-ramp to I-240 from Santa Fe. It will remove the existing eastbound I-240 off-ramp to Shields and the westbound I-240 on-ramp from Shields. ODOT noted that traffic in this area has far exceeded see INTERCHANGE page 56

Nevada’s $1B ‘Project Neon’ Comes to Vegas By Lori Tobias CEG CORRESPONDENT

Its catchy name might conjure flashy lights, glitter and glitz, as befits a project in Las Vegas. In fact, Project Neon isn’t flashy at all, but at a nearly $1 billion

investment, it is Nevada’s largest and most expensive public works project ever undertaken during the state’s 152year history. “Project Neon will widen 3.7 miles of Interstate 15 between Sahara Avenue and see NEON page 18

Caterpillar Inc., Chairman and CEO Doug Oberhelman.

After more than 41 years with Caterpillar Inc., Chairman and CEO Doug Oberhelman has elected to retire, effective March 31, 2017. During his time as Chairman and CEO, Oberhelman has reinvigorated the company’s focus on serving customers while also driving a culture of quality and safety. Oberhelman led the company to its highest sales and revenues peak in its 91-year history in 2012, and,

since that time, has successfully led the company through the unprecedented downturn affecting our key industries. During Oberhelman’s tenure: • Product quality levels have reached historically high levels. • Market position for machines has significantly increased. • New Lean Management processes have simplified and sped production capabilities, improving

product availability for dealers and customers. • The company has increased its quarterly dividend by 83 percent since 2010. • The balance sheet is strong, and at the end of the second quarter of 2016, Caterpillar’s Machinery Energy & Transportation debt-tocapital ratio was 39.0 percent, with $6.764 billion in cash as of June see CATERPILLAR page 32

The power boost button on most excavators can deliver the extra force you need to break through – but only in short bursts. We knew there had to be a better way, so we took our jobsite experience and collaborated with our engineers. The result is an untimed power boost that comes standard in all KOBELCO conventional excavators from the SK210LC to the SK500LC. It provides all the extra muscle you need continuously so you can power through the toughest jobs without interruption.

Hotel Tax Rises...

Governor Signs Bill to Finance NFL Stadium in Vegas LAS VEGAS (AP) Nevada’s governor signed a bill Oct. 17 clearing the way for a Las Vegas stadium that could be home to the Raiders, although NFL owners still need to approve the team’s move from Oakland before Sin City becomes a football town. Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval and Raiders owner Mark Davis joined hard hat-wearing construction workers and maskwearing Raiders fans for the ceremony at UNLV, whose football team would also use the 65,000seat domed stadium. Cheerleaders shook pompoms and a marching band launched into “Viva Las Vegas” after Sandoval inked the deal. “Las Vegas is ready for this. Nevada is ready for this,” Sandoval said in an interview afterward. “The best brand on the planet is coming together with one of the best brands in professional sports. It is truly one of those situations where 1+1 equals 3.”

“The best brand on the planet is coming together with one of the best brands in professional sports. It is truly one of those situations where 1+1 equals 3.” Gov. Brian Sandoval Nevada

Nevada lawmakers narrowly approved a deal in a special session that increases hotel taxes in the Las Vegas area to raise $750 million for a stadium and more than $400 million to expand and upgrade the Las Vegas Convention Center. In raw dollars, it’s the largest public contribution ever toward an NFL stadium, although the public’s share of the total costs — 39 percent — is on par with stadiums in other similarly sized cities. Billionaire casino mogul Sheldon Adelson is putting $650 million toward the project, while

the Raiders and the NFL will kick in $500 million. Critics called the deal a “total scam,” saying it prioritizes the legacy project of one of the world’s richest men over Nevada’s school and mental health needs. Any relocation needs approval from three-fourths of NFL team owners — a historically conservative bunch that has shied away from Las Vegas because of its legal sports betting. Davis said he won’t guess whether enough owners will jump on board. Davis denied speculation that

supporting the Las Vegas plan was a way to force Oakland, which also is trying to keep the team, to build a new stadium. He emphasized that he prefers to move his team to Las Vegas over Southern California, which also is an option. “I made a commitment to the governor of Nevada,” he said after the ceremony. “I’ve never used another city as leverage.” Beyond the Raiders, a stadium close to the Las Vegas strip would be a boon for UNLV, which plays at a field seven miles from campus. UNLV has been trying to break out

from its reputation as a commuter school and elevate its academic and sports programs. “We’re entering into a renaissance here for the university, and you could definitely feel that here today,” UNLV President Len Jessup said. The deal faced headwinds in the Nevada legislature, but it cleared that hurdle with persuasion from workers in the Laborers’ Union, who are eager for some of the 25,000 construction jobs expected to come from the stadium and convention center. The construction industry tanked during the recession and hasn’t fully rebounded. “It means the world for our families,” said union organizer Kenneth McLin, who wore a hard hat and fluorescent shirt to the ceremony. “The stadium is going to be the hero for everybody.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s website at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)

State Loan & Investment Board...

SLIB Approves Funding for Seven Wyoming Projects The State Loan and Investment Board (SLIB) approved funding for seven projects at its quarterly board meeting in Cheyenne, Wyo. SLIB awarded three companies $41 million in Economic Development Large Project loan requests. Going forward, the state treasurer’s office will work with the businesses on terms like loan rate and number of years for repayment. Standard Alcohol, Atlas Carbon and Cody Laboratories have until the end of 2016 to show they have the funding to cover the difference between the loan amounts and project costs. Gov. Matt Mead has final approval of the Economic Development Large Project loans. The state board also approved $4.2 million in Business Ready Community (BRC) grant and loan requests for two new projects

and two projects partially funded in April. The state board comprises the five statewide elected officials: the governor, secretary of state, state auditor, state treasurer and state superintendent of public instruction. Each project is evaluated by staff at the Wyoming Business Council (WBC), the state’s economic development agency. Staff recommendations are presented to the WBC Board of Directors. The board forwards its recommendations to the SLIB for final approval. Economic Development Large Project Program The WBC provides recommendations for the Economic Development Large Project program. The governor has final approval of the projects after SLIB, state treasurer and attorney general reviews. Through the program, the state treasurer is authorized to lend

funds for the benefit of Wyoming businesses. Loans may finance purchase, construction and installation of buildings or equipment, which will add economic value to goods, services or resources within the state. A loan amount may not exceed an increase in assessed valuation created by a project. • Standard Alcohol requested a $25 million loan to help build its $76 million production facility in Cheyenne for turning natural gas and carbon dioxide into mixed alcohols for use as a fuel additive. The project is expected to create 32 new jobs paying an average hourly wage of $43.57. The project will add value to the state’s natural resources. SLIB approved partial funding of $15 million. • Atlas Carbon requested a $25 million loan to expand its activated carbon plant in Gillette. The project build-out will cost $25 million. The company revised its request to

SLIB for $15 million to cover one new production line. The expansion will allow the company to double its production from 16,000 pounds to 32,000 pounds of activated carbon annually. It would also provide an overall economic benefit to both Campbell County and the state of Wyoming by adding value to the region’s natural resources. SLIB approved partial funding of $15 million. • Cody Laboratories requested a $33.750 million loan to expand its pharmaceutical manufacturing process in Cody. The $45 million project would more than double production to 12 tons (11 t) per year. The company would increase full-time employees from 117 to 156, paying an average hourly wage of $21.57. SLIB approved partial funding of $11 million. (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s website at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)

Nevada Invests Big in ‘Project Neon’ — to Widen I-15

Project Neon is Nevada’s largest and most expensive public works project ever undertaken during the state’s 152-year history. NEON from page 1

the ‘Spaghetti Bowl’ interchange in downtown Las Vegas,” said Tony Illia, public information officer of the Nevada Department of Transportation. “It’s currently the busiest stretch of highway in Nevada with 300,000 vehicles daily, or one-tenth of the state population, seeing 25,000 lane changes per hour. Traffic through the corridor is expected to double by 2035.” The project began in April and is set to be complete in 2019, creating 4,000 high-paying local jobs in its course. It is being funded through the state’s bonding process, but will be reimbursed by the federal government in future years. Kiewit Infrastructure West Co. is the design-build general contractor under a $559.4 million contract, which carries up to $20 million in early completion incentives plus millions in potential late penalties. Atkins North America Inc. is the project’s lead designer. Those incentives are key to keeping traffic flowing as much as possible while the

work is being done, said Dale Keller, senior project manager of NDOT. “That’s one thing we spent a lot of time on, to understand limitations of construction and really focus the contractor on minimizing impacts through incentives and disincentives. There are incentives to get out of corridors that are highly traveled. On I-15, there is a $5 million incentive associated with contractor finishing on time. During March through November, they are allowed to limit traffic for one construction season. We also set the time frame around special events, making sure we are avoiding impacts to those major events. It’s the same for U.S. 95. There are great incentives for the contractor to get the work done. It’s the heart of Las Vegas and we understand accessibility is essential. If we’re impacting one east-west local street, then the adjacent street will be functional.” The centerpiece of Project Neon is an 81ft. (24.7 m)-tall, 2,606-ft. U.S. 95 to southbound I-15 that also accommodates carpool traffic from northbound I15 to U.S. 95 northbound, said Illia. The project additionally converts the two existing I-15 express lanes into a general purpose and HOV lanes, thereby creating 22 consecutive mi. (35 km) of carpool lanes between I-15 and U.S. 95. The HOV lanes will allow carpoolers and rapid transit downtown Las Vegas access with the Neon Gateway interchange between Charleston Boulevard and

Oakey Avenue. In addition, the project will create a full diamond interchange at Charleston Boulevard for easier access to downtown, the Medical District and Symphony Park, and several “ramp braids” will reduce merge and weave traffic on Interstate 15. Meanwhile, Martin Luther King Boulevard will become a feeder-like roadway parallelsee NEON page 36

$6.3B Purple Line Extension Under Way By Chuck Harvey CEG CORRESPONDENT

Work is under way on the first section of Los Angeles County’s $6.3 billion Metro Purple Line subway extension that will speed passengers from Los Angeles west to popular destinations like Miracle Mile, Beverly Hills, Century City and Westwood. Built in three phases, the line will stretch about 9 mi. (14.5 km) and include seven new subway stations. Metro (Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority) is the public transportation operating agency for the County of Los Angeles formed in 1993 due to a merger of the Southern California Rapid Transit District and the Los Angeles County Transportation Commission. The Purple Line is one of Metro’s priority projects. The Metro Board of Directors approved a $2.8 billion contract with Skanska, Traylor and Shea, a Joint Venture to design-build the first phase and section of the project. Cost for the remainder of the project is estimated Besides the tunnels and stations, the project includes train conat $3.5 billion. trol and signals, communications, traction power supply and see SUBWAY page 22

Voters Could Have Say on Mega-Projects By Ellen Knickmeyer ASSOCIATED PRESS

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) A proposition that a prosperous farmer brought to the California ballot would threaten two ambitious water and rail projects that Gov. Jerry Brown is pushing, requiring voters’ OK before launching any state building project requiring $2 billion or more in revenue bonds. Proposition 53, if voters approve it on Nov. 8, could force Brown’s administration to hold statewide votes on funding for two controversial mega-projects that he is trying to get well under way before he leaves office in 2018. Those are a $68 billion Los Angelesto-San Francisco bullet train, and a $15.7 billion plan to build two giant tunnels to carry water from Northern California’s largest river south, mainly for use by Central and Southern

California farms and cities. While Brown has not spoken publicly on farmer and canner Dino Cortopassi’s measure, the governor has made defeating it one of his priorities for the November election, according to a fundraising letter that the state Democratic Party sent lobbyists and others in his name in August. California is known for ballot initiatives compelling public votes on financing issues that make populists applaud and government budget-makers cringe, as with the landmark Proposition 13 in the 1970s. That measure limited increases in property taxes. When it comes to securing up-front money for big building projects, like bridges, dams or prisons, California already requires a public vote on general-obligation bonds, which are repaid by the taxes that Californians pay. Proposition 53 would add the

statewide-vote mandate to projects financed by more than $2 billion in revenue bonds, which use revenue from tolls or other user fees to repay. California’s bipartisan Legislative Analyst’s Office, in its review of Proposition 53, calls it “unlikely there would be very many projects large enough to be affected” if the measure passes. The tunnels and high-speed rail projects likely would be, the analysis said, and “it is possible other large projects could be affected in the future, such as new bridges, dams, or highway toll roads.” While the tunnels may be the main project at stake, both sides on the revenue-bond measure insist their stand isn’t primarily about the tunnels. Cortopassi is a former Republican and a former contributor to the conservative Koch brothers who has since see PROP page 25

Volvo MC115C Skid Steer Makes Its Mark in Golden State The first painted highway centerlines were inspired in 1911 by a leaking milk wagon, dribbling a white trail down the middle of a dirt road. More than 100 years later, road surface markings rank alongside inventions like threepoint seatbelts, airbags and traffic lights in helping keep motorists safe. While the use of milk may have scored highly for creativity, the ensuing decades have brought sophisticated materials and processes to amplify the visibility and add durability to road markings, including the use of thermoplastics, anti-skid markings, 3M traffic tape and reflective pavement markers. Payco Specialties, a familyowned road marking company, has established itself as a key-player in the industry, with some 40 years’ experience. Located in the San Diego suburb of Chula Vista, Calif., Payco’s primary focus is on permanent and temporary stripe application and removal, reflective pavement markings, cutting custom stencils, parking lots and airport striping. Paint Your Wagon “In the late 1970s, no one built custom road striper trucks,” said Jeff Llewellyn, vice president of Payco Specialties. “Even today, there are only a few companies committed to building these machines.” Responding to the need to meet specific application requirements, the company began fabricating and

customizing equipment in-house. “We were the first company to install video guidance cameras on our paint trucks to ensure straighter lines,” he said. “We even added operator seats four inches from the ground, giving reflective pavement marker operators greater access to their work.” Payco also developed a short, narrow-bodied long line thermoplastic striper truck. The machine is suited to the confines of city streets and has the capacity for high-paced freeway work, paving the way for more job opportunities. Nocturnal Artistry With roads busy during the day, 95 percent of local paving and associated resurfacing work for the California Department of Transportation (CalTrans) occurs at night to avoid causing traffic congestion. In the San Diego area alone, motorists spend an extra 42 hours per year in traffic delays, according to the 2015 Urban Mobility Scorecard. Any delay in production is subject to severe penalties that could throw a project off-road. “On most major CalTrans jobs, in the first minute you are late, they can fine you up to $10,000 and $1,000 for every minute after that,” said Llewellyn. “Being just five minutes late can mean giving up the entire job.” Responding to the pressure to perform quickly, Payco looked to Volvo CE’s Services’ branch in nearby Lakeside for support. Llewellyn compared side-by-side

powder, a job previously performed by a compact wheel loader. Satisfied with the skid steer loader’s performance, durability and versatility, Payco added a second Volvo MC115C to the fleet to grind off thermoplastic striping from roadways during relining projects.

specs of skid steer loaders from different manufacturers, looking for the one with the strongest hydraulic flow and greatest visibility from the cab. “Volvo skid steers have a very high rate of flow and head speed,” he explained. “For example, in second gear, we reach around 13 to 14 mph. Compared to the competition, the MC115C has the ability to cut the time taken to remove reflectors from a four-mile freeway closure by half. Plus, we benefit from a fully enclosed cab with air conditioning and heated seats for less than the closest competitor.” Road to Success Nighttime motorists snaking along the I-5 highway may have spotted the Volvo MC115C skid steer loader hard at work. Clipping along the center double line, the skid steer loader is used to remove the reflective pavement markers from the asphalt and pop them into the 60 in. (1.5 m) bucket. To enhance performance, Payco’s industrialist team developed a proprietary modification to the skid steer loader that uses a specially-fitted plate welded to the front bucket edge. As a result, the MC115C removes the reflectors more efficiently at high speeds. The MC115C also comes standard with two forward and two rear lights, enabling operators to see clearly at night. “I like the price, and the operator likes the performance,” Llewellyn added. In addition to providing good

visibility from the cab and easy side-door access, the single arm design of the skid steer loader is built with high tensile steel to withstand the shock-load of repeatedly popping reflective markers from the pavement. Over the past three years, the machine has racked up almost 2,000 hours. Powered by a 74 hp (55 kW) Tier IV Final Volvo engine, the MC115C has a hydraulic flow rate of 33 gpm (125 Lpm) and a 2,600 lb. (1,179 kg) lifting capacity, making the machine suitable for multiple applications. Digging holes for roadside signs, for example, is completed with the use of an auger attachment. The machine also is fitted with forks to load 2,000 lb. (907 kg) pallets of thermoplastic

Full Speed Ahead Company president, Rebecca Llewellyn, is a pioneer for women in the male-dominated construction industry. Of his mother’s achievements, Jeff Llewellyn said, “She serves on the Caltrans Small Business Council to make sure they understand how a $170 million infrastructure project whittles down to the smallest contractor. It’s important they hear that voice when they are crafting their policies and procedures.” Payco remains a private, familyowned company with around 20 employees. To cope with the evergrowing volume of work, Payco relies on Volvo machines that work quickly and efficiently. Strong machines and an equally strong work ethic form the foundation for the company’s success. “Our reputation is our best product,” said Llewellyn. “That’s why Payco is still here nearly half a century later.” For more information, visit www.volvoce.com. Subway Will Connect L.A. County’s Biggest Job Centers

The first section of the extension project includes nearly 4 mi. (6.4 km) of subway westward from the Wilshire-Western Station. SUBWAY from page 19

Besides the tunnels and stations, the project includes train control and signals, communications, traction power supply and distribution, and fare collection systems. The Skanska, Traylor and Shea bid was the highest one for the phase 1 of the project. But Metro staff determined that the threecompany venture offered the best opportunity to deliver the project on time and on budget. Brian Freund is project manager of Skanska, Traylor and Shea, a joint venture. The extension features more than 50 subcontractors. Some of the major ones include Condon Johnson & Associates of Ontario, Calif. for pile installation; Malcolm Drilling Co. Inc. of Baldwin Park, Calif. for ground improvement and stabilization; Dynalectric of Los Alamitos, Calif., for electrical work; and Group Delta of Irvine, Calif., for geotechnical monitoring. About 250 workers will be on site during peak production. They include laborers, operators, carpenters, ironworkers and teamsters. Project Will Connect L.A. to Westside The extension is considered vital to the area known as Westside for its location just west of Los Angeles. Overall, the project is a critically-needed subway extension along Wilshire Boulevard, one of the busiest urban corridors in the nation,” said Dave Sotero, communications manager of L.A. Metro. “When it ultimately reach-

es Westwood-VA, the subway will enable Angelenos to travel between downtown L.A. and Westwood in 25 minutes, a feat that is nearly impossible during the peak rush hour periods.” It also will connect the two biggest job centers in L.A. County, downtown and Westside. Sotero said the expansion project is currently on schedule and on budget. The project has kicked off with construction under Wilshire Boulevard. The first section of the Purple Line Extension is funded by local Measure R Funds, approved by voters in November 2008 along with federal “New Starts” matching funds and a low-interest loan from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act program. Metro is already working with the federal government to secure matching funds for the second project section. Metro also is pursuing additional funding to accelerate the entire project through a proposed half-cent sales tax measure that would be on the L.A. County ballot in November. Concrete & Dirt Removal Crews will pour about 170,000 cu. yds. (129,974 cu m) of structural concrete; 5,500 cu. yds. (4,205 cu m) of concrete pavement; and 25,000 tons (22,680 t) of asphalt. Also dirt removal will be done on a large scale and will be disposed of off site. Workers will remove 400,000 cu. yds. (305,822 cu m) of dirt for station excavation and 200,000 cu. yds. (152,911 cu

First Section The first section of the extension project includes nearly 4 mi. (6.4 km) of subway westward from the Wilshire-Western Station. New

stations along the extended line will include Wilshire-La Brea Station, Wilshire-Fairfax Station and Wilshire-La Cienega Station. Metro officials expect the first section to be operational in 2023. Two subsequent sections will add four more stations at downtown Beverly Hills, Century City, Wilshire-Westwood and WilshireVA Hospital. Once the subway extension is complete, commuters will travel below ground from downtown Los Angeles to Westwood. The project begins with excavation of a portion of Wilshire Boulevard and replacing it with concrete deck panels that will allow traffic flow to continue on the street while a station is excavated below. Heavy Equipment for Section 1 Current heavy equipment on site includes a Liebherr 885 crane; Liebherr 895 crane; 80T Link-Belt crane; Caterpillar 335 excavator; Caterpillar 305 excavator; Caterpillar 938 loader; and a 33K forklift. Specialty equipment includes two new tunneling machines that are being constructed in Germany and a tower crane for La Brea Station construction. Each station is about 800 to 1,000 ft. (244 to 105 m) long and 70 ft. (21 m) wide. It contains at least one elevator, two escalators and stairs between the upper and lower levels. Stations are usually 50 to 60 ft. passenger circulation from the station platform to the surface. Preparing a site for station construction usually begins by protecting or relocating any underground utilities like power lines, water lines, sewers, gas pipes, cable-telephone lines and storm drains. Sections 2 and 3 Section 2 will run 2.6 mi. (4.2 km). Work on Section 2 (phase 2) is scheduled to begin in 2019 and is slated to conclude in 2026. Section 3 will span 2.9 mi. (4.7 km), with construction is scheduled to start in 2027 and finish in 2035. Tunnel Construction Tunnels are about 20 ft. (6 m) in diameter. Crews build two parallel tunnels for train travel in each direction, with a separation of about 20 ft. (6 m). Tunnels are an average of 50 to 70 ft. (21.3 m) deep, although they can be built deeper between stations. Some portions of the Purple Line Extension will be built at a depth of 130 ft. (39.6 m). Tunnels between stations will be dug using tunnel boring machines that are lowered into the ground by cranes through a large shaft known as the TBM launch site. The machines tunnel at an average rate of 40 to 50 ft. (12 to 15 m) per day. Portions of Wilshire Blvd. Closed On June 10, crews began closing portions of Wilshire Boulevard in the Miracle Mile area in a process that spanned 22 weekends.

The Wilshire closures were conducted in three phases: three weekend closures between Detroit Street and La Brea Avenue, three weekend closures at Wilshire and La Brea intersection and 16 weekend closures between La Brea Avenue and Highland Avenue. Local access for businesses and residents was maintained and sidewalks have been closed intermittently. “Our construction relations (team) has done an excellent job in helping to mitigate construction impacts with local communities,” Sotero said. He said the team has conducted hundreds of meetings with community members. Transportation, Economic Benefits of Subway Extension Los Angeles County is expected to grow by another 750,000 people over the next 10 years. Metro believes it’s important to provide more highway and transit alternatives and improvements to keep services in good operating condition. Based on the analysis conducted during the final environmental impact report, the Purple Line Extension to the Westwood-VA Hospital station will generate about 49,300 daily weekday boardings at the seven new stations. Also, construction of the Purple Line Extension is projected to generate 52,500 jobs within the region. become a Democrat. With his family he funded the morethan-$4.5 million petition-circulating campaign that brought the revenue-bond measure to the ballot. The proud child of Italian immigrants who made his fortune partly by canning Central Valley tomatoes, Cortopassi opposes the tunnels, but said his ballot measure is about stopping the state from launching into giant projects, with murky financing, at will, through revenue bonds. “I call it cockroach debt,” Cortopassi said. Cockroaches and revenue bonds, he said, “are born and expand in the dark. You want to get rid of cockroaches? Turn on the light.” Opponents of Cortopassi’s measure contend it could force purely local projects to seek statewide voter approval, which Cortopassi’s camp denies. Opponents also argue the measure could limit urgent rebuilding after an earthquake or other disaster. “It’s one of the most complex and unsexy initiatives on the ballot but it’s probably one of the most important,” said Steven Maviglio, a spokesman for the campaign to defeat Proposition 53. Maviglio calls the measure unworkable. “The main thing is it will hold up a lot of [local] infrastructure projects by letting other cities vote on it.” Speaking of Cortopassi, Maviglio said, “if he had wanted to kill the tunnels he should have written something that would kill the tunnels, instead of a hundred other projects.” The state Democratic Party, the state Chamber of Commerce, the California State Building and Construction Trades Council, and scores of local chambers, construction and other industry associations, unions and other groups have come out against Proposition 53. 30, 2016. • Global safety metrics for employees have dramatically improved, with the recordable injury frequency improving each year. • Caterpillar has been granted nearly 7,300 patents worldwide. • The company dramatically expanded its commitment to lower owning and operating costs for customers by connecting new and existing equipment through digital technology and data analytics. “Our people have heard me say many times that my greatest responsibility as chairman and CEO is to manage Caterpillar for today and position the company and its future leaders for long-term success,” Oberhelman said. “It has been an honor and a privilege to lead this company, and I am confident

in the choice of my successor, Jim Umpleby. “During the last four years, Caterpillar has faced unprecedented global economic conditions that have significantly impacted the industries served by our customers, as those industries and economic growth in many regions around the world have slowed or severely contracted. Faced with these challenges, our employees have responded like champions. We have improved our market position and grown our field population. Our product quality is at historically high levels, and I believe we are leading the industry in digital capabilities. I am confident that Caterpillar is stronger than ever, with product quality, power, technology and innovation that is the envy of our competitors. Early in his career, he held numerous positions of increasing responsibility in engineering, manufacturing, sales, marketing and customer services. Umpleby lived in Asia from 1984 to 1990, with assignments in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. ing the I-15 for improved performance and accessibility. Other planned upgrades include extending Grand Central Parkway over the Union Pacific Railroad tracks as well as connecting to Industrial Road for improved resort corridor access and mobility. There also will be aesthetic and landscape upgrades, improved drainage, and 50 Active Traffic Management (ATM) signs, with the largest ones measuring 12.5-ft. (3.7 m)tall by 77-ft. (23 m)-wide. In addition to the cash incentives, the contractor also is helping to speed work along by using precast segments, Keller said. “We are very focused on the impact to the community. A lot of segments are precast — precast walls, precast I girders for the bridges, precast deck. It’s all focused on speed and schedule and getting out of the corridors, and for the equipment to get in and get out. We also have a big regional flood control

box that is being constructed. There are dual boxes that run adjacent to the freeway. It doesn’t rain a lot but when it does it comes down fast and quick and flows to center of valley. The boxes help with flood control.” Specialty equipment on the job includes a Komatsu PC1250 excavator; a Guntert & Zimmerman S850 “Stringless” concrete paver; and Liebherr LR1200 crawler cranes. Future work will call for more than 35 Caterpillar machines “Project Neon, upon completion in summer 2019, will reduce travel delays by 28 percent for a $110 million annual savings through increased productivity,” said Illia. “It will also improve air quality due to less idle time and vehicle exhaust while enhancing motorist safety from reduced merge and weave traffic.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s website at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.) Discussions are held throughout each year, and today’s announcement is the result of these ongoing and deliberate board discussions,” Rust said. “I am certain Jim will continue the superb leadership, which is the hallmark of Caterpillar, in the years to come. I especially want to thank Doug for his strong and outstanding leadership of the company throughout his tenure, particularly in the last four years, when the global economic environment has created unprecedented challenges for Caterpillar. We wish Doug all of the best for a successful retirement following a distinguished and successful 41-year career.” Calhoun has been a member of the Caterpillar board of directors since 2011. In addition to his role with the Blackstone Group, he was previously executive chair of Nielsen Holdings N.V. (2014-2015), served as chairman of the executive board and chief executive officer of The Nielsen Company B.V. (2006-2013), vice chairman of General Electric Company and president and chief executive officer of GE Infrastructure (2005-2006). “I am honored to take on these new responsibilities with Caterpillar, an iconic and global leader,” Calhoun said. “Following a deliberate succession process, the board confidently elected Jim as Caterpillar’s next CEO. Case M Series Dozers Feature Increased Horsepower The Case Construction Equipment M Series line of dozers includes five models ranging from 92 to 214 net hp. M Series dozers were designed from the ground up and take into account extensive customer research, testing and feedback related to durability, productivity, controls, comfort and serviceability. Key features found on M Series dozers include best-in-class drawbar pull, increased horsepower ratings, the first selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology built into a dozer, fuel savings up to 14 percent, industry leading visibility, versatile controls and a pressurized cab for optimal comfort. The models include the 750M (92 hp), 850M (112 hp), 1150M (127 hp), 1650M (150 hp), and 2050M (214 hp). Pushing Productivity M Series Dozers deliver power and productivity through best-inclass drawbar pull (models 750M through 1650M), increased horsepower ratings, proven SCR engine technology, a hydrostatic drive system and an advanced load management system. The advanced load management system automatically reduces track speed (increasing torque) with a heavier load on the blade and increases track speed (reducing torque) with a lighter load on the blade, ensuring the machine is working at optimal power and efficiency. Exclusive Tier IV Interim Technology for Dozers The engines on models 850M through 2050M are built by Fiat Powertrain Technologies (FPT) and offer advantages in terms of maintenance (no regeneration or diesel particulate filter to maintain) and fuel efficiency (some models experience fuel savings up to 14 percent). One of the greatest advantages of SCR in this application relates to machine performance. SCR is well-suited for dozers because it lets the engine run at peak performance under variable loads without compromising the power or drawbar pull that achieves the brute force required for earthmoving. The 750M, designed primarily for the rental market, features a cooled exhaust gas recirculation

(CEGR) engine also produced by FPT. This emissions treatment requires diesel particulate filter maintenance but no end-user involvement in filling diesel exhaust fluid (DEF). Giving Control to the Operator Control customizations allow the operator to better tailor machine performance to jobsite conditions, including the ability to set blade sensitivity (1150M through 2050M), steering sensitivity and shuttle sensitivity to smooth, moderate or aggressive. This allows the operator to adjust machine responsiveness and controls to their preferences and ground conditions. An electrohydraulic joystick further simplifies operation by providing better feel and responsiveness to the operator. Fingertip blade shake allows for quick blade cleaning,

and a grading mode reduces blade speed by 40 percent for increased accuracy. Each M Series dozer also is compatible with blade control technologies from Leica Geosystems, Topcon and Trimble to match operator preference. Cab Built for Visibility, Comfort The models feature a cab-forward design with floor-to-ceiling glass doors to provide enhanced visibility down to the blade. A sloped hood and the position of the operator in the cab provide visibility to the ground in front of the machine. M Series dozers feature a sealed and pressurized cab that helps keep dust and other materials out of the operating environment. Noise is significantly reduced over previous generations down to 75 dBa, helping to reduce operator fatigue.

Amenities such as a factoryinstalled radio and environmental controls further make this the most comfortable Case dozer cab. Built to Last — Easy to Maintain The M Series dozers were designed to withstand the harshest of environments. This includes a box-style C-frame built for heavy earthmoving and a cooling system that is tested under maintained heavy load conditions and designed to optimize engine and hydraulic temperatures. Additional components, including cylinders, the electrical system and the rippers have been engineered to work in the toughest conditions, according to the manufacturer. All daily service checks — including hydraulic components, filters and electrical components –— are accessible from the ground and do not require hand tools for

access. Case ProCare Provides Peace of Mind All M Series dozers come standard with Case ProCare, heavy machine coverage. ProCare includes a three-year, 3,000-hour full-machine limited factory warranty; three-year, 3,000-hour planned maintenance contract; and a three-year Advanced Case SiteWatch telematics system. Case ProCare, when combined with Case’s extensive REMAN and undercarriage offering, help businesses acquire new equipment with confidence knowing that operating costs will be predictable for the first three years of ownership. The 750K and 850K incorporate a PowerTech 6.8-L Final Tier IV diesel engine with 165 and 205 hp, respectively. Both models feature Eco mode, which automatically adjusts engine power and transmission settings based on load while maintaining ground speed, to help optimize fuel economy.

John Deere is building on its lineup of SmartGrade crawler dozers with the integration of the machine control offering on the 750K and 850K models. Adding SmartGrade availability on these larger machines will improve job site accuracy and quality of work through the complete integration of the Topcon 3D-MC2 grade control system. The system is fully incorporated into the machine cabin, structures and software — delivering precise grading performance while eliminating vulnerable external masts and cables. “The launch of our 700K SmartGrade dozer was a huge hit earlier this year, and many of our customers asked for the grade control technology to be integrated into our larger offerings,” said Liz Quinn, product marketing manager, John Deere WorkSight. “The 750K and 850K SmartGrade dozers answer that call. They’re easy to set up and are highly productive earthmoving and grading machines intended for road building, site development and residential building applications. Like the 700K SmartGrade dozer, these models are purpose-built and ready to work the moment they roll off the dealer lot.” The 750K and 850K incorporate a PowerTech 6.8-L Final Tier IV diesel engine with 165 and 205 hp, respectively. Both models feature Eco mode,

which automatically adjusts engine power and transmission settings based on load while maintaining ground speed, to help optimize fuel economy. Since SmartGrade is integrated into the machines, it removes the need to install blade-mounted sensors and components daily, reducing setup time and allowing operators to get to work. Eliminating external cables to the masts reduces breakage, and the removal of the masts from the blade eliminates vulnerability to damage and theft. A key feature of the integrated machine control is Auto SmartGrade. This allows the operator to easily adjust the system when moving the machine from one soil type to another, unlike an after-market system, which often requires the GPS manager to make a trip to the machine to recalibrate the system. Particularly helpful to new operators, Auto SmartGrade automatically lifts the blade over heavy loads before track slippage occurs, then returns the blade to grade. SmartGrade also limits the number of passes required, reducing the pace of wear on the undercarriage. The John Deere SmartGrade dozer is nearly 7 percent more accurate across the entire speed range of the dozer when compared to conventional masted systems, according to the manufacturer.

Another benefit of the SmartGrade technology is that machine dimensions are preloaded into the grade control monitor, reducing the time required to calibrate the dozer to about 30 minutes. The easy-to-use system is beneficial to new operators in that it can get them up and running quickly. The SmartGrade integration into the 750K and 850K dozers also allows for enhanced diagnostics. Having the ability to get the grade control system and diagnostic information over the John Deere JDLink telematics system provides valuable uptime information to customers. Fleet managers looking to get the most out of their 750K and 850K SmartGrade dozers can rely on their John Deere dealers to provide Ultimate Uptime featuring John Deere WorkSight. With Ultimate Uptime, owners receive pre-delivery and follow-up inspections; three years of JDLink telematics, machine health prognostics and remote diagnostics, and programming capability; and the ability to add dealer-provided uptime solutions to customize the package to individual needs. 1922. By 1936, the company was designing tractor equipment for Caterpillar, and within the next year, Trackson created a loader attachment specifically for Caterpillar tractors that had the innovation of cable-operated vertical lift capabilities. Known as “Traxcavators” they were mounted above the tractor hood, which often made the machine unstable. The next step was to replace the cables with hydraulics, and Trackson was able to create a lighter attachment that was wellreceived in the industry. In fact, Caterpillar purchased Trackson Company in 1951 and

Tracked (or crawler) loaders are machines with a tracked chassis and a loader that can be used for digging and moving/loading materials. They are a versatile component of any fleet, able to perform many tasks. These days, loaders are most often needed to move heavy materials on a construction site. They are well-suited for moving wood chips, sand, rock and recycled materials. Crawler loaders move on tracks, which can be manufactured using different materials and a varying number of grousers to make them capable of maneuvering various surfaces. Hydrostatic drives simplify the operation of the machines. The history of tracked loaders can be traced to the 1920s, when tractors were fitted with buckets that could be used for handling materials. Then in the 1930s, an English company, E. Boydell, created a small loader that included a tractor and a small bucket. While today’s crawler tractors are built as integrated units to provide the correct balance and strength for excavation, early models were manufactured as loader shovel attachments for specific tractors. These attachments are known to have been constructed as early as the 1930s, and were operated by cables and latches. Since that time, tracked loaders have reportedly had three notable evolutions in their design. The first versions, made from track tractors with scratch built loaders, were cable-operated like the bulldozers of that time. Both the loaders and the dozers lacked the ability to dig into hard ground, but

worked well when performing tasks like moving materials and loading duties, such as railroad cars and trucks. Hydraulic systems brought a major change for tracked loaders, increasing the power of the machine and allowing the application of down pressure to the bucket, which made it much easier to dig unworked ground with them. The next major change was the addition of hydrostatic drive systems. It is noted that one of the first companies to design crawler loader shovels was Trackson Company, which was founded in

adopted the Traxcavator name for all its crawler loaders. The company then began to build the loaders from the ground up rather than using attachments. The first integrated hydraulic crawler loader was released by Caterpillar in 1953, and was known as the No. 6 Traxcavator. In 1946, Tractomotive, a company based in Chicago, designed the first hydraulically powered bucket. It was supplied to AllisChalmers, which then went on to buy Tractomotive and build some of the largest crawler tractors in the industry. Around that same time, Bucyrus-Erie was building hydraulic attachments for International Harvester tractors. But it was Drott Company that was instrumental in helping International Harvester move into the crawler loader market. Drott designed a clamshell bucket that made the loader useful in four different ways as a loader, scraper, dozer, and clamshell. Hoover Machine Co. Ltd. and Caterpillar created an overhead dozer that worked by excavating from the front. The material was then lifted over the top of the machine so it could be released on the other side. For obvious reasons, overhead cab protection was a must with this design. By the 1970s, hydrostatic motors were introduced to crawler tractors, allowing them to be controlled by using a joystick for the tractor and another joystick for the loader. The first rear-engine hydrostatic crawler loader was introduced in 1971 by JCB. It reportedly set the standard for future crawler loaders. Since that time, hydraulic excavators have see HISTORY page 54

Tracks Allow Dozers to Have Ground-Holding Capability HISTORY from page 50

gained popularity and brought a downturn to the need for crawler loaders. However, many are so large that they are difficult to move to various areas, making crawler loaders popular for companies that need to do specific tasks. A bulldozer is defined as a crawler (continuous tracked tractor) equipped with a substantial metal plate (known as a blade). It is most often used to push large quantities of soil, sand, rubble, or other such material during construction or similar work. The machines are used in many different projects, including farming, engineering, mining, factories, and quarries. Although the term “bulldozer” refers to the actual blade, most people associate the name with the entire vehicle. The tracks allow the dozers to have good ground-holding capability and mobility over even rough terrain. They are wide enough that the weight is distributed across the machine, preventing it from sinking even when the terrain is soft. This makes them good choices for numerous applications in construction, road building, and land clearing. The first endless chain tread was reportedly developed by Benjamin

Holt in 1904 for his steam traction engine. Around that time, the Hornsby Company in England converted a wheeled steam traction engine to a crawler format. This

version was closer to what is known today as a bulldozer. because it was steered by controlling power to each track. Hornsby’s patents were sold to

Holt about a decade later. A photographer working for Holt to take pictures of one of his crawler tractors commented that the rollers looked like a caterpillar when he saw the upside-down image through his camera lens. Holt reportedly liked the comparison, and used it as the name for his system. The Caterpillar Tractor Company was formed in August, 1925, by the merger of Holt’s company and its major competitor, the C. L. Best Gas Tractor Company. The first designs for the bulldozer were made in 1923 by farmer James Cummings and draftsman J. Earl McLeod, and a patent was issued on Jan. 6, 1925, for what was called an “attachment for tractors.” Tracked vehicles became common in the 1920s, such as the Caterpillar 60. They were equipped with thick metal plates in the front to enable them to complete earth-moving tasks. By 1929, attachments included three main types of bulldozer blades: a Ublade for pushing and carrying dirt for longer distances; a straight blade for spreading piles of dirt; and a brush rake for brush and roots. Over the years, dozers have

been modified to fit the jobs that they are needed for. One example of this is a smaller machine to be used in tight areas, such as in mining. As the size of the machines grew to meet the demands of the industry, they also became more sophisticated. This included the addition of automatic transmissions, hydraulic cylinders and electric motors, and grade control that was automatic. In more recent years, dozers have been outfitted with GPS technology, including systems made by Topcon Positioning Systems Inc., Trimble Inc. and Leica. Wellknown dozer manufacturers include Caterpillar, Komatsu, Liebherr, Case, and John Deere. what this interchange was designed to handle when it was constructed in the 1960s. More than 138,000 vehicles per day travel I-35, and nearly 104,000 travel on I-240 daily in this area. “This is the first of six phases in a long-term interchange reconstruction effort under traffic, so drivers in this area will be dealing with ongoing construction for many years,” Body said. “Specific challenges associated with this phase include temporary lane closures and lane shifts on I-240 and lane clo-

sures on the nearby service roads, which serve a large number of businesses along the corridor. Drivers also will be getting accustomed to using new I-240 on- and off-ramps.” Subsequent construction phases for the overall project are scheduled in ODOT’s Eight-Year Construction Work Plan for Federal Fiscal Years 2018, 2020, and 2021. Subsequent construction phases for the overall project are scheduled in ODOT’s Eight-Year Construction Work Plan for Federal Fiscal Years 2018, 2020, and 2021.

More than 138,000 vehicles per day travel I-35, and nearly 104,000 travel on I-240 daily in this area.

The project includes federal funding and about $1 million in state funding. ODOT noted that traffic in this area has far exceeded what this interchange was designed to handle when it was constructed in the 1960s.

The $12 million contract with financial incentives for early completion was awarded to an Allen Contracting Inc./Shell Construction Inc. joint venture.

The first of several phases to completely reconstruct the I-35/I-240 Crossroads Interchange has begun in south Oklahoma City under the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT).

Contractor Goes to Extremes to Complete Runway Rebuild By Jeff Winke SPECIAL TO CEG

Knik Construction Co. Inc., of Anchorage, Alaska, appears to thrive on the difficult construction, dredging, and paving projects that most would be intimidated to take on. A perfect example is a project in Yakutat, Alaska. Yakutat, as described by its own chamber of commerce, is “located along the rugged Alaskan Gulf Coast between Sitka and Cordova. Bounded by the Gulf of Alaska on the south, nearly impenetrable mountains to the north, and coastal glaciers to the east and west, Yakutat is about as remote as one can get in Alaska. There are no roads leading into or out of Yakutat. All commerce and access must occur via air or sea.” The project that took Knik to this picturesque village is the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Funding (ADOT&PF) Yakutat Airport Runway Pavement Rehabilitation project. In Alaska, the state DOT maintains all the airports. The Yakutat Airport (YAK) is a state-owned, public use airport located 3 mi. (6 km) southeast of the central business district of Yakutat. For the approximately 600 residents of Yakutat, this two-runway airport is critical. The FAA shows an average of 11,000 YAK airplane boardings annually. “Our project was the asphalt resurfacing of runway 11/29, A total of 6,000 tons which is 8,136 feet by 194 feet, (5,443 t) of millings plus a 300 foot taxiway,” said were removed. Amanda Gilliland, project manager of Knik Construction Co. “For the project, the runway was divid- plant, supplies and asphalt concrete material ed into three sections — raising the 29 end, had to be shipped via barge, which came to which tapered from the existing runway to Yakutat once a month. More than 3,000 tons an elevated 2.5 feet; a middle section where (2,721.5 t) of asphalt concrete material was the runways intersect, that required varied shipped to Yakutat with each cube of asphalt profile milling; and a final section that need- cement weighing about 27 tons (24.5 t). Knik started processing aggregate in ed .5-inch surface milling, which was March 2016 and began work on the runway enough to remove the texture grooves.” The four-month project was a logistical on May 1. It was opened up for use at the challenge. All the heavy equipment, asphalt end of August.

The existing runway served as the base for the paving.

There were two paving crews with six workers on each, plus eight locally-hired truck drivers.

“We needed to carefully plan our shipments, because if anything was forgotten, we were stuck until the next month’s barge, or we would need to fly it in,” Gilliland stated. “It also meant that we needed very reliable equipment with maintenance up to date — we wouldn’t want to send a truck over on the barge that needs new tires in a week.” Knik had a three-worker milling crew. They used a Roadtec RX900e with 12.5-ft.

(3.8 m) cutting drum. The machine features a Tier IVi Caterpillar C27 950 hp (700 kW) @ 1,800 rpm engine and 14-in. (35.5 cm) maximum cutting depth. A total of 6,000 tons (5,443 t) of millings were removed, which was mixed with 50 percent D-1 locally-produced aggregate base and reused as fill on the section of the see RUNWAY page 58

runway that required elevation to alleviate water issues. “Working in a remote location, it is beneficial to try to reuse immediately rather than stockpile, since the pile could sit for years or longer before it would be used as fill or RAP,” said Gilliland. “To ensure accurate milling depth, our cold planer is equipped with GPS machine control.” For the Yakutat Airport runway, Knik shipped a 400 tph portable double drum Astec asphalt plant; eight belly-dump haul trucks; two 8-ton (7.25 t) Blaw-Knox PF4410 tracked pavers; and two Roadtec SB-2500e Shuttle Buggy material transfer vehicles. There were two paving crews with six workers on each, plus eight locally-hired truck drivers. For the most part, the existing runway served as the base for the paving. The asphalt plant was located near the shipping docks. The haul trucks would collect loads and transport them 8 mi. (12.8 km) to the material transfer vehicles (MTVs) at the runway site. “Shuttle Buggies worked great — we rarely do any paving without them,” Gilliland stated. “They give us consistency of HMA temperature and ensure against segregation. We’ve been using them a long time and, quite honestly,

couldn’t imagine doing any large paving projects without them.” According to Gilliland, the two MTVs kept both pavers productive and in instances where there was not adequate space for the trucks to dump, the belly dump could offload in another area not far from the paving train and the Shuttle Buggy would pick up the pile from there and transport it back to the paver — without having to stop the paver. The Shuttle Buggy has 25 tons (22.7 t) storage capacity. The Yakutat Airport project required 62,000 tons (56,245.5 t) of HMA, making it the biggest paving project in Alaska for 2016. On a good production day, Knik Construction paved as much as 6,000 tons, leaving the top lift of the runway with very few transverse joints. The company used infrared cameras to shoot the pavement right after it’s placed to confirm that there are no temperature variations — cold spots in the mat. Minimal color variation in the infrared image indicates minimal temperature difference in the mix, a result of good remixing. “The Shuttle Buggy uses a triple auger mixing technology which equalizes temperatures and evenly mixes large and small particles,” Gilliland said. “The asphalt spec for the job,

Cat Designs 815K Soil Compactor for Optimum Compaction The Cat 815K soil compactor, weighing 49,353 lbs. (22,386 kg) and equipped with a Cat C7.1 ACERT U.S. EPA Tier IV Final/EU Stage IV engine, is designed for heavy-duty compaction and dozing operations. This durable design, which lasts through multiple life cycles, provides optimum customer value with high production and low-cost operation. The Caterpillar built power train ensures reliability in this difficult application, and the 815K’s wheel design delivers high ground pressures. In addition, the available Cat Compaction Control system and Cat COMPACT technologies provide compaction-measurement and mapping capabilities that enhance the overall efficiency of the compaction process, according to the manufacturer. Structures and Wheels The 815K’s full-box-section rear frame resists torsional shock, twisting forces and heavy-duty steering-cylinder mounts that dissipate steering loads into the frame. Axle mounting is designed to provide increased structural integrity. This robust design combines with high-strength materials and robotic welding to ensure durability and overall machine strength. Four forces (pressure, manipulation, impact and vibration) combine with the 815K’s modifiedchevron, tamping-wheel tip design to provide optimum compaction results, meeting density requirements (typically 95 to 100 percent standard proctor) in fewer passes (whether forward or reverse), while delivering increased traction and a smooth ride. The 815K achieves compaction from the bottom of the lift to the top, and the tampered wheel tips “walk” out of the lift without fluffing the soil, leaving the top of the lift compacted with a relatively smooth and sealed surface. Haul units can maintain high speeds on the surface when delivering fill, which the 815K can spread without assistance, possibly eliminating extra onsite machines. Each wheel has two cleaner bars with hardened-steel, adjustable tips. Compaction Technology Available for the 815K is the Cat compaction control system, which

The 815K achieves compaction from the bottom of the lift to the top, and the tampered wheel tips “walk” out of the lift without fluffing the soil, leaving the top of the lift compacted with a relatively smooth and sealed surface.

uses machine drive power (MDP) technology to measure rolling resistance and to correlate resistance with soil stiffness. The MDP system works in both cohesive and granular soils. An optional 3D mapping system correlates compaction measurements with the machine’s location, providing a graphic, real-time view of compaction progress and a record of compaction results. In addition, available Cat COMPACT technologies combine an advanced compaction- measurement system with in-cab guidance and reporting capabilities to assist in consistently meeting compaction targets, uniformly, in minimum passes, saving fuel and rework costs. Also, Cat LINK technologies, Product Link, for example, wirelessly deliver pertinent operating data (such as machine location, hours, fuel usage, idle time, and event codes) via the online VisionLink user interface to assist in managing the

fleet and lowering operating costs. Power Train The 815K’s Cat C7.1 ACERT engine, developing 248 net hp (185kW), features innovative Cat electronics, fuel injection process, air-management system, and emissions controls, including the Cat NOx (nitrogen oxide) reduction system and selective-catalyticreduction and diesel- particulatefilter (DPF) after-treatment systems. The DPF regenerates (eliminates accumulated soot) without interrupting the work cycle. The high-pressure, common-rail fuel system contributes to fuel efficiency, as does the 815K’s automatic idle-shutdown system. The 3F/3R Cat planetary powershift transmission uses integrated electronic controls for smooth shifting. Advanced gear metallurgy and premium, durable clutch-disc material ensure long service life, according to the manufacturer.

Operator Amenities and Safety The 815K’s cab is isolationmounted to reduce vibration and sound, and a Cat Comfort Series III air-suspension seat adds to operator comfort. Temperature control is automatic, and a cabpressurization system uses filtered air to keep the cab environment clean and fresh. Expansive glass areas ensure all-around visibility, enhanced by a rearview camera. The 815K uses Cat STIC steering control, which allows singlelever, low-effort steering with simple side-to-side movements, as well as fingertip transmission control. An electro-hydraulic, singlelever implement-control system provides responsive, precise blade positioning. For further machine control, the left pedal acts as a brake, transmission neutralizer, and engine decelerator. The decelerator allows quickly overriding

the engine speed selected by the throttle lock to slow the machine when maneuvering. Serviceability Routine maintenance is performed safely and conveniently with the 815K’s ground-level or platform access. Service points are grouped, swing-out doors on both sides of the engine compartment provide easy access to daily service checks, and ecology drains help prevent spills. Sight gauges permit quick, visual inspection of fluid levels and minimize fluid contamination. The Cat VIMS (vital information management system) provides notifications that allow potential operational issues to be resolved in a timely manner. For more information, visit www.cat.com. J.J. Kane Auctioneers Hosts Sale in Waxahachie, Texas

J

.J. Kane Auctioneers held a used heavy equipment auction at its facility in Waxahachie, Texas, on Oct. 13.

A wide selection of power line and utility equipment, construction equipment, trucks, vehicles and trailers including bucket trucks and digger derrick trucks from: Asplundh Tree Expert Co., Entergy Services Inc., El Paso Electric, Pike Electric, Time Warner Cable, National Utility Equipment Company and many other consignors. Equipment manufactured by PosiTrack, John Deere, Vermeer, Kubota, Altec, Jarraff Industries and more was available for buyers to bid on. (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s website at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.) CEG

J.B. Slay (L) and Donnie Harrison of Slay Equipment, Samson, Ala., came a long way to check out this Jarraff Industries tree limb remover for swampy areas.

Christy (L) and Jamie Arebalo of Midwestern Electrical Contractors in Norman, Okla., chose this Altec Digger.

The bidding was hot and heavy for the lineup of service trucks.

John Fielder (L) and Lawrence Kinney plan to bid on this Altec pole placer for their new venture, J & L Communications in Granbury, Texas. Shawn Byrd, Byrd Communications in Fort Worth, Texas, is sure this Kubota KX71-3 will be just the machine to use for dirt work.

Brian Schneider of S&S Cable, Manor, Texas, needs this Vermeer T-655 trencher to help finish a current job.

Warren Snow of Snow Ventures Inc., Waxahachie, Texas, said “sometimes I buy things I don’t need and then I find I could not do without it.” This PosiTrack RC-100 fits that scenario perfectly.

Karen (L) and James Marrow of M-LINE Cable, Georgetown, Texas, just bought 25 acres of their own and this John Deere 553 loader will do what they need on the new property.
