Trimble Launches Financial Software for Contractors Trimble announced on July 20, 2026, the availability of Trimble Financials software in the United States. The new construction-specific financial management and job costing solution is designed to simplify accounting operations for small-business contractors. The software provides real-time visibility into project and overall company performance, enabling contractors to monitor profitability and make smarter business operational decisions. “Contractors running small businesses don’t want to — and shouldn’t have to — become accounting pros,” said Jon Fingland, vice president of Trimble. “Trimble Financials is ideal for growing beyond financial management and analysis limitations of paper or spreadsheets and for businesses that may not need all of the features of more advanced, enterprise financial management platforms. The construction-specific capabilities of Trimble Financials also provide usability and job costing advantages over generic, off-the-shelf accounting options.” Trimble Financials is purpose-built for business owners and companies without in-house accounting or bookkeeping expertise and with annual revenues around $10 million or less. The software helps contractors manage projects and financials from proposal through reporting and closeout. Users can quickly create project cost proposals, track expenses by job, phase and cost type and streamline billing with customizable schedules and customer invoicing. As work progresses, financial data from Trimble Financials can populate dashboards that provide a clear view of estimated versus actual costs and the overall status

requirements. Additionally, built-in AI capabilities allow contractors to access support for the Trimble Financials application through real-language prompts. Trimble Financials also integrates with Trimble solutions for estimating and performance tracking, including employee timekeeping. This connectivity can unify office, field, and financial operations in a cohesive industry ecosystem to reduce manual processes and improve real-time data sharing and visibility across critical construction workflows.

Abernethy Relies On John Deere, Strong Dealer Partnership Abernethy Contracting of Charlotte, N.C., is working in Huntersville, N.C., where crews are transforming 70 acres of raw land into a commercial development featuring two tilt-up buildings totaling nearly 10 acres under roof. Serving as the site contractor on the Axial Commerce project for general contractor Evans General Contractors, Abernethy Contracting is responsible for every phase of site development, including grading, underground utilities, curb and gutter, sidewalks, paving and construction of six stormwater ponds. The turnkey contract showcases the company’s ability to manage every aspect of complex site preparation while maintaining an aggressive construction schedule. Work began in March 2026 and is scheduled for completion in March 2027. By securing the grading permit ahead of schedule, crews were able to begin earthmoving early, helping offset weather-related challenges and keeping the project on track. Katherine Petrik

CEG SENIOR EDITOR

Scope of Work Is Substantial. Crews will move nearly 350,000 cu. yds. of material across the site while installing several miles of storm drainage and underground utilities, including a private lift station. The project also includes approximately 19,000 lin. ft. of curb and gutter; 22,500 sq. ft. of sidewalk; roughly 32,000 sq. yds. of asphalt; and more than 40,000 tons of stone. Approximately one-third of the grading work has been completed. Fifteen employees are dedicated to grading operations while another 10 are installing underground utilities, with that workforce expected to grow as utility work intensifies. One of the project’s biggest early challenges involved establishing erosion control while excavating steep drainage areas containing poor soils. Crews also experienced a tremendous amount of weathered rock that was difficult to excavate and hard blue rock which required blasting. Despite the project’s size, Abernethy Contracting has worked to minimize impacts on neighboring businesses and motorists.

Crews will move nearly 350,000 cu. yds. of material across the site while installing several miles of storm drainage and underground utilities, including a private lift station.

When complete, the development is expected to create new commercial opportunities while supporting continued economic growth and future job creation in the Huntersville area. Large Fleet for Large Project Equipment has played a critical role in maintaining production on the massive earthmoving operation. Much of the fleet was supplied by James River Equipment, Abernethy Contracting’s local John Deere dealer. Equipment on the project includes a new John Deere

The John Deere 670 P-Tier hydraulic excavator has become one of the project’s most valuable production machines. Weighing approximately 154,000 lbs. and powered by a 462-hp John Deere Power Systems engine, the production-class excavator is designed for high-volume earthmoving and demanding rock excavation.

As grading progresses and underground utilities continue expanding across the site, Abernethy Contracting expects the project to be complete early 2027.

This John Deere 750 dozer works on grading for the project.

The machine features three power modes, a high-capacity hydraulic system and enhanced digging forces that allow operators to maximize productivity while maintaining fuel efficiency. Depending on bucket configuration, it can be equipped with buckets exceeding 9 cu. yds., making it well suited for mass excavation applications like the Axial Commerce project. On the Huntersville job, the 670 P-Tier has been excavating weathered rock, constructing stormwater ponds and moving large volumes of material across the site. Its size and digging power have enabled crews to excavate significantly more rock mechanically rather than relying on additional blasting. In harder ground conditions where smaller excavators would struggle to maintain production, the larger machine has helped Abernethy Contracting save both time and operating costs while keeping work moving. Company leadership was evaluating a significant fleet investment but, rather than making the decision from a conference room, they turned to the people responsible for delivering the work every day. “We asked a simple question: ‘What do you need to be successful on this project?’” said Kevin Hyatt, chief financial officer of Abernethy Contracting. The answer was John Deere. Partnership Relies On Trust, Support Based on that feedback, Abernethy Contracting invested in a dedicated John Deere fleet supported by James River Equipment. Today, those machines are helping crews meet key production goals while maintaining the schedule on the

70-acre development. What stood out wasn’t the equipment itself. It was that leadership trusted the recommendation, backed the people closest to the work and followed through with the investment. According to Abernethy Contracting, dependable dealer support has been just as important as the equipment itself. The company worked closely with James River Equipment’s Jesse King, territory manager, and Kyle Cohoon, general manager, to assemble the equipment package needed for the project. As project requirements evolved throughout construction, the dealer consistently adapted equipment deliveries to meet changing jobsite demands. “The Axial Commerce project is more than just another project,” said Kurt Abernethy, vice president of team development. “We are working for a very large general contractor that has a proven history of expectations on delivery, performance and safety. The needs for this project have been fluid to the point where many times what we asked for was no longer needed. Not once did we hear or see James River complain about the changing equipment environment. They simply delivered.” That partnership extends well beyond equipment sales. “We spent more time together in the beginning talking about life, family and hobbies than we did about equipment needs,” said Hyatt. “This pattern has continued since then and we continue to cultivate the relationship not just with equipment needs but also from a personal relationship capacity.” Long-term support has always been the dealership’s priority.

“We’re celebrating our 100th anniversary this year, so we’ve been around since 1926,” Cohoon said. We’re not looking to just drop some equipment and move on. It’s all about support. When these guys go down, we go down. Partnership goes a long way.” Cohoon added that supporting customers means making sure operators have the tools they need to succeed every day. “Support comes not only from the dealership but also from the guys in the field putting hours in the seat every day,” he said. “We want to make sure they’ve got what they need to be successful.” Because Abernethy Contracting experienced excellent uptime with John Deere equipment on a previous project, choosing the fleet for the Axial Commerce project was a natural progression. “This team had a really good experience with John Deere equipment on the previous project,” said Abernethy. “Across all the brands, that was their favorite because it seemed to have the most uptime. So, when we approached the team, we asked, ‘What do you want? What do you need to be successful on the job?’ They wanted a John Deere package.” As grading progresses and underground utilities continue expanding across the site, Abernethy Contracting expects its combination of experienced crews, high-production John Deere equipment and responsive dealer support to keep the project on schedule for completion in early 2027. John Deere P-Tier Loaders Receive Technology Updates

John Deere photo

With the launch of its next generation 524 P-Tier, 544 P-Tier and 624 P-Tier wheel loaders, John Deere is delivering smart solutions that help boost productivity and support operator confidence on the job site.

With the launch of its next generation 524 P-Tier, 544 P-Tier and 624 P-Tier wheel loaders, John Deere is delivering smart solutions that help boost productivity and support operator confidence on the job site. Built on the foundation of the current P-Tier lineup, these updated models are loaded with technology and job readiness features that empower contractors to do more with less, support safety and help drive down operating costs. “With the latest updates to the P-Tier wheel loaders, we’re delivering more than just performance,” said Katie Voelliger, product marketing manager, John Deere. “When operators arrive at the job site, they know their machines are ready to work. Thanks to simplified routine maintenance, they spend less time on prep and more time on the task at hand. We focused on the details that give our customers a competitive advantage on the job site.” Designed to make job sites more productive, the P-Tier wheel loaders feature an integrated suite of smart systems that simplify maintenance and aid in getting machines ready to run, according to John Deere. With on-board diagnostics, including daily fluid checks, fluid loss detection and battery health monitoring, all easily accessible through the in-cab display, operators can manage uptime with confidence. The John Deere exclusive QuadCool cooling system is a highlight in durability and serviceability in the updated P-Tier wheel loaders. Redesigned rear hoods, grilles and cab roofs eliminate the need to climb on the machine for maintenance, while side-access planes simplify cleaning of the condenser and radiator. The newly relocated axle cooling system is now easier to access and maintain and a reverse fan clears debris out through the side doors, designed to minimize buildup beneath

the machine. In addition, the rear door opens independently from the sides, making daily maintenance more convenient. Inside the cab, operators will now benefit from the new, next generation primary display, a 7-in. primary touchscreen that offers a larger interface and intuitive navigation that helps to enhance operator focus and simplifies operation. This display enables a new in-base rear camera view and supports the ability to run two applications simultaneously, including the backup camera. Also, physical buttons have been removed from the display face to improve user experience, while key machine functions remain easily accessible. An optional G5 secondary display is available to further enhance operator control and customization, offering expanded functionality in a dualscreen layout. To further boost job site performance, the P-Tier models can now be equipped with SmartDetect from the factory. This optional camera-based system enhances operator awareness by detecting objects and people near the machine and provides visual and distinctive audible bystander alerts on the in-cab display. When equipped with SmartDetect, the G5 display acts as a secondary screen, while the next-generation primary display remains the main interface. Combining cameras, radar and machine learning, SmartDetect aids in improving situational awareness and productivity on the job site. Lastly, to support greater material handling efficiency, the P-Tier wheel loaders are now available with new high-strength steel buckets featuring extended lips. These redesigned buckets increase material holding capacity by approximately five percent, allowing customers to move more material per pass and finish jobs more quickly. Ontario International Airport Gets Repaved Taxiway ONTARIO from page 1

“Taxiway S is a major south-side parallel taxiway that plays an important role in moving aircraft between the runways, aircraft parking/staging areas and the cargo/airfield areas,” Michael Bishara, vice president of capital development of Ontario International Airport, told Construction Equipment Guide. “It provides an east-west aircraft movement route on the south side of the airfield, generally serving aircraft operating to and from Runways 26L and 26R. It accommodates ADG VI aircraft, including very large cargo aircraft. “This project reconstructed the full-strength taxiway and shoulder pavement along Taxiway S, east of the Cucamonga Channel. It was divided into multiple phasing areas to maintain operation on the south side at all times.” Burns and McDonnell designed the Taxiway S project and also is designing the airport’s next major runway project. ”The challenges included maintaining runway operations and access to cargo and terminal facilities,” said the design team, “minimizing impacts to existing drainage, coordinating around FAA communications, electrical and NAVAID utilities and redesigning the project from rehabilitation to full reconstruction after investigations revealed more extensive pavement deterioration.” The lifespan for the runway pavement will have a similar lifespan to that of Taxiway S. It will be constructed sing the same materials and drainage system. The taxiway reconstruction follows a $90 million runway rehabilitation project completed in December 2024 by Coffman Specialties. That two-phase project involved rehabilitation of the airport’s southernmost Runway 8R-26L, which is approximately 10,000 ft. long and 50 ft. wide. Crews removed approximately 45,000 tons of concrete and placed 80,000 sq. yds. of new concrete. The work also included rehabilitation of Taxiways K, L and Q, elimination of Taxiway P, construction of a new South Vault and Taxiway S8 and installation of LED lighting and other improvements. The airport’s improvement program will continue in January 2027, when construction is scheduled to begin on the 2,600-ft.-long Keel Section of North Runway 8L-26R. The project also includes rehabilitation of Taxiways N, U and W. Both projects are being financed through a combination of federal Airport Improvement Program funds and local funding. Fast-Paced Reconstruction Security Paving’s Taxiway S work includes removal and replacement of the 17.5-in. Portland cement concrete taxiway pavement, asphalt concrete shoulders, cement-treated subgrade, a double 60-in. drainage system, electrical components, joint seals and striping. Most major construction operations are complete. Crews are concentrating on punch-list work, project closeout, final electrical work, minor spall repairs and remaining bid items. “One of the biggest construction challenges is performing the work within an active airport environment while minimizing impacts to ongoing operations,” Thomas Mattivi, Security Paving’s project manager, told CEG. “Access restrictions, security requirements, limited work windows and the need to coordinate construction activities around aircraft movements all add complexity to what would otherwise be a straightforward construction operation. “These challenges are being overcome through detailed planning and constant coordination between the construc-

tion team, airport personnel, and other project stakeholders. Work is carefully phased so that crews, equipment and materials can move efficiently while maintaining the required separation from active airport operations.” The project moved quickly, with the taxiway reconstruction taking place from March 14 to July 31. “The progress of the work all happened extremely fast as it was around a four-month project,” Mattivi said. “With that said, there have been challenges within the project to meet those dates.” The existing taxiway was removed during March and April. Because the work was divided into several phases, the duration varied from two days for the smallest phase to approximately two weeks for the largest. “Because the project was divided into multiple phases of significantly different sizes, the duration varied by phase,” Mattivi said. “Our largest phase took approximately two weeks to complete, while our smallest phase was completed in approximately two days. Our approach was to sequence the demolition and removal operations so that concrete breaking, excavation, loading and hauling could operate continuously and efficiently. Maintaining production was particularly important because all of this work controlled the remainder of the subsequent operations. “One of the biggest challenges was the sheer size and thickness of the existing pavement, combined with the logistical constraints of working at an active airport,” he added. “The work also had to be performed without damaging pavement or infrastructure that was designated to remain. Maintaining the planned sequence was critical because delays in one operation, whether breaking, excavation, trucking or disposal, could affect the entire removal operation.” Crews removed pavement ranging from 17.5 to 23 in. thick using multiple sawcuts and a tumbler to break up the concrete. Three to four excavators typically worked during a shift. “If necessary, a small amount of the subsoil was removed,” Mattivi said, “but the majority of it was mixed with cement to create a CTB [cement-treated base] and used as our underlying section of the concrete.” After demolition, site preparation crews installed mat rebar before placing new P-501 Portland cement concrete designed to achieve a compressive strength of 650 psi at 28 days. “We completed all pours in 15 individual pours, which were a mix between a 42.5-ft.-wide concrete paver and hand pours,” Mattivi said.

Drainage, Electrical Work A major component of the project was installation of a storm drainage system consisting of two side-by-side 60-in. polyethylene pipes. The pipes, totaling 1,395 ft., were installed approximately 14 ft. below grade on the infield side of the taxiway. Multiple crews worked simultaneously during seven runway closures. “We had multiple crews working simultaneously to keep the operation moving efficiently,” said Mattivi. “One crew handled the excavation, with one excavator removing the material and passing it up to a second excavator that loaded the trucks. Another crew placed and prepared the aggregate beneath the pipe, while a separate crew set the pipe. A fourth crew followed behind, backfilling and compacting the material over the newly installed pipe. see ONTARIO page 48

The project as it looked when it just started.

An asphalt coating is applied.

With major reconstruction operations complete, Security Paving is focused on final electrical work, minor repairs, punch-list items and closeout activities ahead of the scheduled September completion.

Shaft Screener Builds Better, More Durable Mountain Trails

MB Crusher photo

Every road starts with a solid foundation. The same principle applies to mountain bike trails.

Carbon frame. Race suspension. Highperformance tires. Every mountain biker searches for the perfect set-up. The most important element isn’t the bike at all – it’s the ground beneath it. Comfort, traction and flow all depend first and foremost on the quality of the trail surface. A well-built trail must withstand weather, repeated use and natural erosion while delivering a consistent riding experience year after year. Achieving that starts long before the first rider arrives. It begins with the excavator and an MB Crusher shaft screener, according to MB Crusher. Start With the Right Ground Italian trail-builder Tasso Trail knows that a durable trail starts with properly prepared material. To prepare the base for new trails, the company chose an MB-HDS207 shaft screener mounted on a Caterpillar mini excavator. Rather than importing aggregates, excavated material is processed directly on site. Soil containing rocks of varying sizes is screened to produce a consistent gradation, creating a stable, free-draining base ready for

final shaping. The result is a trail structure that is easier to compact, offers improved drainage and delivers greater long-term durability, according to MB Crusher. Building Trails Every road starts with a solid foundation. The same principle applies to mountain bike trails.

MB Crusher photo

To prepare the base for new trails, Tasso Trail chose an MB-HDS207 shaft screener mounted on a Caterpillar mini-excavator.

The foundation must carry repeated loads, shed water efficiently and remain stable throughout the seasons. Material preparation is therefore one of the most critical stages of the project. “We used to spend a lot of time raking the soil and bringing in additional material,” said Emiliano Pinzi of Tasso Trail. “Now we can prepare exactly the gradation we need right on site. That allows us to work faster while

achieving a much more consistent result.” By removing oversized rocks and producing a uniform material, the finished base distributes loads more evenly, improves drainage and helps the trail retain its shape for much longer. It’s the same engineering principle used in road construction, adapted to the specific demands of mountain bike trails. see TRAIL page 34

Making the Most of Onsite Material As investment in mountain bike parks and recreational trail networks continues to grow, sustainability has become an increasingly important consideration for contractors and local authorities alike, according to MB Crusher. Processing excavated material on site reduces the need for imported aggregates, limits truck movements and significantly cuts material handling. Instead of becoming waste, excavated soil is transformed into a valuable construction resource. For contractors working in mountainous or environmentally sensitive areas, this approach offers clear advantages: less hauling, fewer material movements and a more efficient job site, according to MB Crusher. The benefits become even greater on remote projects, where transporting material

can be both expensive and logistically challenging. Every truck trip takes time, increases costs and impacts the surrounding environment. Producing specification–ready material directly on site simplifies operations while helping preserve the surrounding landscape. Beyond Traditional Construction Sites Trail construction demonstrates how a shaft screener can deliver value far beyond conventional construction projects. The same equipment used every day in construction, demolition, quarrying and landscaping also enables contractors to deliver specialist trail-building projects efficiently and sustainably. For contractors, this means expanding the range of jobs their excavators can handle. For trail builders and landscape contractors, it provides complete control over material quality without relying on imported aggregates. 

Finlay Launches New I‑130, I‑130RS Impact Crushers Finlay, a global manufacturer of mobile crushing, screening and conveying equipment, expanded its horizontal impact crusher range with the launch of the I‑130 and I‑130RS. Positioned between the I‑120/I‑120RS and the larger I‑140/I‑140RS, the new models address demand for a machine that delivers strong impact performance while being easier to transport and configure across a wide range of applications. The I‑130 models were developed for quarrying, recycling, asphalt and demolition operations where efficient reduction, consistent product shaping and simplified material flow are required. At the core is a 1065mm x 1245mm (42-in. x 49-in.) four‑bar rotor with twin hydraulic aprons, delivering aggressive reduction and consistent shaping across a broad range of materials. A direct‑drive system with soft‑start provides smooth engagement, fuel efficiency and reduced wear on drivetrain components. Material is delivered to the chamber via a heavy‑duty vibrating grizzly feeder, with the option of an independent pre‑screen to remove fines ahead of the chamber, reducing wear and improving overall efficiency. Beneath the chamber, an optional under‑pan

feeder provides additional belt protection, managing rebar and directing material safely onto the main product conveyor when used in conjunction with the optional overband magnet. Designed for operators who do not require onboard screening and recirculation, the I‑130 offers straightforward operation, strong service access and durable components, making it a practical solution for high‑output crushing across multiple applications. For operations requiring closed‑loop crushing and on‑board screening, the Finlay I‑130RS integrates a high‑capacity two‑deck afterscreen and recirculation system within the same mid-range platform.

The large two‑deck afterscreen is the biggest in its class, which provides high throughput, screening capacity and flexibility of configuration. Both decks can be recirculated for closed‑loop applications, or operators can divert bottom‑deck oversized material to produce a mid‑grade product, increasing output flexibility without the need for a separate screener. The 500mm (20-in.) recirculation conveyor slews up to 90 degrees, allowing material to be efficiently stockpiled when required. For recycling and C&D applications, an optional windsifter can be fitted to the afterscreen to remove light contaminants such as wood, paper and plastic, improving final product quality.

The I‑130 models were developed for quarrying, recycling, asphalt and demolition operations.

A key feature of the I‑130RS is its modular design. The entire RS section can be quickly detached to reduce transport weight when screening is not required. Alternatively, the RS conveyor can remain in place while only the afterscreen is removed, giving operators the flexibility to configure the machine to suit specific job requirements. Both models offer easy access to service areas, with large platforms, clear walkways and straightforward maintenance points. Fully hinged crusher sections simplify blow bar changes and liner inspections, helping reduce downtime and improve safety. “Building on the market success of the I‑120 and I‑120RS, the I‑130 and I‑130RS were developed to meet demand for a more transport‑friendly impact crusher with increased configuration flexibility,” said Matt Dickson, business line director for Finlay. “The result is a machine that can be tailored to suit a range of recycling and quarrying applications, with options including use of a pre-screen, under-pan feeder, windsifter and onboard recirculation, while remaining easy to operate and maintain for efficient, low‑complexity production on site.” For more information, visit terex.com/ finlay/en/impact-crushers.  (Photo courtesy of Finlay.)

Simulator Training Can Shorten Trainee Learning Curve TRAINING from page 1

In lineman safety training, CM Labs found that every week a trainee spends on a heavy equipment simulator equates to two weeks or more in the field. Training times and safety improve simultaneously, said Daniel Cooper of the American Line Builders Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (ALBAT). In a joint webinar hosted last year, Cooper and CM-Labs’ Gary James discussed how simulation can change how workforce development is approached. Cooper and James both believe simulation technology allows trainees to make mistakes safely, learn faster and retain more. Keeping It Real With Less Stress In the webinar, Cooper said that his goal in adding simulation to ALBAT’s lineman training program was improved safety. “Our biggest training reason for bringing in simulation was that safety aspect,” he said in the discussion. “The movements feel real without the danger.” Heavy equipment simulators empower students to fail safely and learn from their mistakes, believes CM Labs. This approach reduces the stress and pressure of live equipment for trainees as they are still learning. Starting on real equipment straight from the classroom can be dangerous and cause serious accidents, said CM Labs. “So, using the simulator as a stepping stone during training helps with heavy equipment operator safety.” In the webinar, James agreed that simulation training allows students to learn from their mistakes in a safe and risk-free manner. “If you don’t do it wrong a hundred times, you’ll never get it right,” he said.

a more engaging experience. Plus, with simulators students can observe and learn from each other. Hands-on simulation lessons also can foster healthy competition between students, as they check who can get the better score or the fastest time. “You’ll have your star student telling another apprentice how to do it and why it’s done in that manner,” said Cooper. This leads to their retaining more information while fostering team building and making for a more enjoyable learning experience overall. The final point Cooper and James stressed in their webinar is that the use of simulation MIT photo for operator training has been a big shift for the construction industry. MIT and Sumitomo engineers want to shorten the learning curve for excavator operators with a new training interface and more Simulation affords those completely intuitive controller that resembles a miniature excavator’s arm and unfamiliar with the industry the opportunity bucket. to join the workforce and learn both safely and efficiently. Cooper said after just five minutes on the simulator, “Drop your bravado,” said Cooper. “Yes, we didn’t have ALBAT operators told him, “Oh, I can feel the seat. Heavy equipment operators must learn complicated mental maps to direct a digger to move rocks, grade soil, clear debris and dig foundations. In fact, it can often take years for operators to build up expertise in maneuvering the heavy machines.

Critical Starting Point for More Proficient, Safer Workforce Caterpillar simulators provide trainees a controlled environment to learn foundational skills, practice complex techniques and build confidence. And they experience these benefits long before they ever climb into a cab, according to a Cat Simulators blog post. Companies and training institutions are using simulation to reduce incidents, reinforce best practices and create consistent training standards, said Cat. “We want to make sure our people are safe,” said David Leonard group technical manager of McConnell Dowell. “Simulation helps us do that by letting them experience hazards before they encounter them on the job.” Cat believes Leonard’s perspective reflects a growing industry shift toward proactive, scenario-based safety training. “Safety training no longer begins on the job site — it begins in a risk-free environment where operators can make mistakes, correct them and improve.” In fact, in another blog post, Cat details how students at the Empower College & Career Center are gaining real-world skills through simulator training. The center’s heavy equipment operator (HEO) pathway in Jefferson, Ga., was one of the state’s first dedicated HEO pathways. Empower expanded its training environment with a Cat Simulators training package allows students to practice working together on a coordinated, simulated job site. see TRAINING page 48

Diamond Mowers Reveals Its American Manufacturing Process

Diamond Mowers is opening its factory doors to show how American-built equipment goes from raw steel to job site-ready performance that goes beyond the “Made in the USA” label. Through a behind-thescenes look at its Sioux Falls manufacturing operation, the company highlights the people, processes and quality standards that have shaped its mowing and vegetation management equipment for more than 25 years. “At Diamond Mowers, ‘Made in the USA’ isn’t just a label. It’s a promise,” said Nate Cleveringa, vice president of engineering and product management. “It means a commitment to engineering equipment that performs in the toughest conditions because it’s made by people who understand the demands of the job firsthand.” From Midwest-sourced steel to final testing, craftsmanship and performance come together to provide equipment that contractors and municipalities trust. From Midwest Steel to Job Site Performance Long before a machine reaches

the field, the work begins. It starts with steel sourced primarily from Midwest suppliers and chosen for its durability and consistency. From there, precision and purpose guide every step inside Diamond’s Sioux Falls, S.D., facility: Precision Cutting: Teams feed large sheets of steel through advanced laser cutting systems that run up to 22 hours a day. This ensures each component meets exact specifications, forming the foundation for consistent attachment performance and fit. Fabrication and Forming: Once cut, workers bend and shape components into the structural elements that define each attachment. This stage is critical for strength, balance and long-term durability. Welding and Structural Integrity: Skilled welders then bring parts together, reinforcing key stress points and confirming the structural integrity required for demanding applications like mulching, mowing and right-ofway clearing. Finishing and Protection: Each piece is painted and coated for protection against corrosion, wear,

any unit leaves the facility, it undergoes a run and evaluation process to confirm performance, reliability and readiness for realworld use. Delivery to the Field: From initial steel processing to final shipment, the full build cycle typically takes one-and-a-half to two months, reflecting a deliberate approach that prioritizes quality and performance over shortcuts. “The meticulous oversight our team displays throughout this manufacturing process pays off where it matters most: performance in the field,” said Cleveringa.

American-Built Products Offer Strong Foundation DIAMOND from page 44

Because it manages fabrication and assembly domestically, Diamond can keep a tighter grip on materials, production and quality standards. It also shortens the distance between engineering, manufacturing and customer support, so that what crews experience on the job can quickly shape what gets built next. Just as important, this process supports the workforce behind the work. Every machine represents the effort of employees who take pride in what they build and how it will be used. Larger Footprint in Field Over time, Diamond’s strategic focus on high performance, from fabrication to the field, has translated into measurable growth and a broader footprint across the industry. For more than 25 years, the company steadily expanded its reach while staying grounded in the same principles that built its reputation in the first place: • more than 40,000 units sold across a wide range of vegetation management

applications • more than 300 dealers supporting customers across the world • more than 25 government contracts, reflecting long-term trust from municipalities and public agencies This scale matters for customers because it means access to equipment, parts and expertise, all backed by a network that understands the complexity of the job. The work ahead will keep changing as demands on equipment continue to grow, from clearing rights-of-way and managing invasive species to maintaining infrastructure and reclaiming land. The one thing that won’t change? Diamond’s commitment to meet those needs by manufacturing reliable, purpose-driven equipment backed by people who stand behind it. “The promise behind ‘Made in the USA’ isn’t just part of our story; it’s the foundation of it,” said Cleveringa. Seven Separate Runway Closures Part of Project ONTARIO from page 42

“This work required seven separate runway closures,” he added. “During each closure, approximately 300 to 500 ft. of the operation was completed within a 24- to 48-hour window, requiring close coordination between the multiple crews to keep each stage of the work progressing efficiently.” Security Paving also installed electrical components to bring existing airfield infrastructure into compliance with current Federal Aviation Administration requirements. The work included centerline lights, edge lights and illuminated sign panels, along with runway edge and threshold lighting. Equipment, Materials The project was heavily equipment driven. During demolition, crews used a Fendt 500 Vario towing an impact roller, Cat 340 excavators equipped with H160 hammers and Cat 335 excavators with heavy-duty buckets. CTB placement and grading operations used a Cat 150 motor grader equipped with Trimble Earthworks, Cat 930 loaders, a Cat 613 scraper and a Cat 415F skip loader. Concrete production took place on site with a RexCon Model S batch plant. Placement equipment included a GZ850 slipform paver, GOMACO RTP 500 placers, a triple roller tube paver, a Multiquip SuperScreed and a GOMACO TC rig. Security Paving’s Recycled Base Materials subsidiary supported demolition and concrete recycling operations. The taxiway demolition generated approximately 80,000

tons of material. “No materials were recycled for use on site,” said Mattivi, “but we brought in our crushing division, Recycled Base Materials, which crushed 82,000 tons and then hauled it off for reuse elsewhere.”

The project required approximately 60,000 sq. yds. of new PCC pavement and 11,100 tons of asphalt concrete pavement. Additional equipment included Cat 336 excavators equipped with H160 breakers and P214 secondary processors, a Cat 988 wheel loader, a Terex Cedarapids JS3054 jaw crusher, a Cat 950 loader, a Cat TL1055 telehandler, a Schwarze M6 Avalanche sweeper and a McLellan 4K water truck. Peak staffing reached approximately 50 Security Paving and subcontractor personnel. Major subcontractors included Ensley Electric & Pavement Recycling Systems and Monzon and Sons, which provided trucking services. Equipment reliability also has been critical to maintaining the compressed schedule. “We have a dedicated team of 11 experienced mechanics who are prepared to mobilize to the job site at any time,” Mattivi said. “This allows us to proactively address equipment showing signs of potential failure, as well as respond immediately to unexpected breakdowns. Having this level of mechanical support available helps minimize equipment downtime, maintain production and prevent a single equipment issue from disrupting the overall operation.” With major reconstruction operations complete, Security Paving is focused on final electrical work, minor repairs, punch-list items and closeout activities ahead of the scheduled September completion. Mechanical Arm Allows Remote Operation for Training TRAINING from page 42

At Paul D. Camp Community College in Franklin, Va., HEO students receive hands-on training and an industry-aligned curriculum. Learners range from recent high-school graduates to adults seeking new skills, a career change or the confidence to operate equipment safely on their property. After completing the eight-week NCCER Core Curriculum prerequisite, students attend classes two evenings a week for 10 weeks. They receive hands-on training on the college’s Cat Simulators — dozer, wheel loader and excavator central to the Level 1 HEO program. Students typically complete approximately 30 hours of simulator time. There’s flexibility for those who need more practice or advance more quickly. “The closer we can emulate the real equipment, the better prepared our students are.” Could Better Mousetrap Be Found? Excavator operators must learn complicated mental maps to direct a digger to move rocks, grade soil, clear debris and dig foundations. In fact, it can often take years for operators

to build up expertise in maneuvering the heavy machines. MIT engineers want to shorten the learning curve for excavator operators with a new training interface and more intuitive controller. Instead of using joysticks, the team has designed a controller that resembles a miniature excavator’s arm and bucket. Trainees grasp the device and use their arm and hand to make it move as an excavator does. Meanwhile a digital excavator projected on an immersive six-screen display mirrors the trainee’s movements in a virtual environment. “This is a more intuitive way to command the machine,” said Hermano Krebs, principal research scientist of MIT’s Department of Mechanical Engineering. “With this new interface, we can eliminate a lot of the mental maps that an operator would need to build in order to operate an excavator.” Jennifer Chu of MIT News reported that Krebs sees the interface as a faster way to train excavator operators. Krebs also envisions a new way to physically operate the machines, both on site and remotely. “Instead of having joysticks, you might

have this miniature arm on the side, where the operator would place their own arm, kind of like an exoskeleton.” This technology would allow them to operate the excavator in the cab, Krebs said. “If work has to be done in a difficult or unsafe environment, you could have an operator sitting off site in a trailer and using this arm to remotely tele-operate.” The team of Moises Alencastre-Miranda, Joao Buzzatto and Eran Beeri Bamani reported its results in the Journal of Computing and Civil Engineering. The trio worked with collaborators from Sumitomo Heavy Industries, industrial machinery manufacturer based in Japan. At MIT, Krebs’ group works on humanrobot interactions, with a long-time focus on physical rehabilitation. They accumulated knowledge about the ways in which humans control their limbs and how they can most intuitively interact with machines. Operators typically learn by driving actual excavators on a controlled driving course. As they operate the machine, novices must learn to relate the actions of the excavator’s joysticks with the movements of the arm, bucket and cab.

Coordinating these actions to carry out actual tasks adds another level of complexity that can take months to years to master. The team reasoned that if they could eliminate the need for this mental map, they might significantly shorten the training process. To do so, they looked for a more natural way to control the machine, as an alternative to the traditional joysticks and landed on the mechanical arm design. The resemblance to the digger’s arm and bucket could enable operators to mimic and control the excavator’s movements directly with less mental translation. The combination of the mechanical arm and virtual simulator constitutes a new training and control platform for digger operators, World-Space Interface. “‘World-space’ refers to everything in the world that is outside of yourself, or in this case, outside of the excavator’s cab,” Krebs said. Normally, operators must build a mental map of how to manipulate things in the world-space, he said. “But now, we can just mime picking up rocks or dirt, and the computer will do that translation to the world-space for us.”  CEG

Caterpillar Foundation Makes Donation to Earthquake Relief In response to the earthquake in Venezuela, the Caterpillar Foundation announced a $250,000 donation to the Center for Disaster Philanthropy’s (CDP) Global Recovery Fund to support rapid response and longterm recovery in Venezuela. CDP is collaborating with local nongovernmental organizations to deploy immediate needs, including food and water, medical supplies, temporary housing, relief kits and more. “Our thoughts are with the people and communities of Venezuela who have been impacted by this devastating earthquake,” said Asha Varghese, president of the Caterpillar Foundation. “The loss and disruption caused by disasters like this can be overwhelming, and recovery often requires sustained support from many collaborators. The Caterpillar Foundation is committed to standing with communities during times of crisis, and this donation will help provide critical relief and assistance to those affected.” In addition to this donation, the foundation is a member of the American Red Cross Annual Disaster Giving Program (ADGP).

This $1 million annual investment helps the Red Cross preposition supplies before a disaster strikes and provide emergency response after a crisis occurs. The Caterpillar Foundation’s commitment also extends to Red Cross International Services, helping offer hope and comfort to communities around the world. These vital funds support coordinating with the global Red Cross and Red Crescent network to prepare for and respond to emergencies wherever and whenever they occur. The global Red Cross network is on the ground supporting the Venezuela earthquake response.  (Photo courtesy of Caterpillar.)

The Auction Co. Joins Forces With Ritchie Bros. Debuts Yoder & Frey to Connect Calif. Clients Redesigned App With Native Mobile Bidding

The Auction Co. photo (L-R) are Jonnie Keys of Yoder & Frey and Euro Auctions and The Auction Co. co-founders Claudia Knopp and Steve Gorin.

After nearly three decades of serving California’s construction, transportation and industrial equipment markets, The Auction Co. is joining forces with Yoder & Frey, becoming part of the global Euro Auctions network. The collaboration brings together two established auction businesses with a shared commitment to customer service, industry expertise and professional auctioneering. For customers in California, the partnership creates access to a significantly broader national and international buyer network while preserving the local relationships and personalized service that have defined The Auction Co. since its founding. Founded in 2003 by Claudia Knopp and Steve Gorin, The Auction Co. said it has built a strong reputation for honest, professional auction services throughout California. The company operates auction facilities in Colton and Madera, with offices in Murrieta, specializing in construction and heavy equipment, rental fleets, trucks, trailers, vehicles and government surplus assets. The company said the heart of the business is a straightforward philosophy: Put customers first and deliver results through honesty, integrity and professionalism. That philosophy will continue under the new partnership. Knopp and Gorin will remain actively involved in leading the business, supported by the experienced team customers already know. The company’s existing

locations, local expertise and customer relationships will remain central to its operations. “Joining Yoder & Frey and becoming part of the Euro Auctions network represents an exciting next step in the development of our company,” Knopp said. “We have built The Auction Co. by putting our customers first, and it was important to us to partner with an organization that shares those same values. “Yoder & Frey and the wider Euro Auctions group have built a network of owner-operated businesses with strong local leadership, experienced teams and a genuine commitment to customer service. That made this a very natural fit for us.” The partnership gives The Auction Co.’s customers access to the broader Euro Auctions marketplace and international buyer base. With the addition of The Auction Co.’s California operations, the network now includes six auction sites in the United States, seven in Canada, five in Europe, one in the UAE and one in Australia. For sellers, the expanded network provides an opportunity to market equipment consigned in California to buyers far beyond the traditional regional marketplace. Greater exposure to national and international buyers can create increased competition for equipment and open new opportunities for sellers. For buyers, the partnership provides access to a wider selection of construction equipment, heavy

machinery, trucks, trailers and other industrial assets through an established California auction operation. “For our customers, it is very much business as usual,” Gorin said. “They will continue dealing with the same people, at the same locations and with the same level of personal service they have come to expect from us. What has changed is the reach behind the business. We can now introduce their equipment to a truly global marketplace and connect California sellers with buyers well beyond our traditional market.” Jonnie Keys of Yoder & Frey and Euro Auctions welcomed The Auction Co. and its team to the group. “The Auction Co. has built an outstanding reputation over many years, and the team shares the same customer-focused culture that exists throughout our network,” Keys said. “Their addition strengthens our presence on the West Coast while giving their customers access to buyers around the world. This collaboration combines local expertise with global capability. The Auction Co. remains a trusted California business, while benefiting from the scale, technology and international reach of a global industrial equipment auction group. “For customers, it is business as usual, only now with the backing of a global organization and an auction network that spans multiple continents. The future remains firmly rooted in California, but the marketplace has become worldwide.” 

Ritchie Bros. announced the launch of its redesigned mobile app, giving buyers the same bidding power on their phones as on their desktops. Developed in response to buyer feedback, the update transforms the app from a mobile browsing companion into a fully native bidding and transaction experience. The new Ritchie Bros. mobile app offers buyers a faster, easier way to search inventory, track watchlists and place bids directly from their mobile devices, according to the company. The mobile app redesign is the latest example of Ritchie Bros.’ investment in products, technology and capabilities to strengthen buyer engagement and create more value across its global marketplace. The update reflects how buyers increasingly expect to transact: with full access to the tools they need, whether they’re on a job site, in transit or off site. The redesigned app now brings bidding directly into the mobile interface, enabling Ritchie Bros. to deliver an improved experience for the more than 120 million annual visits to its’ marketplace, according to Ritchie Bros. Users will be able to better monitor their watchlists, confirm their bidding limits, securely place bids and participate in auctions from wherever they are. Early data also points to strong buyer engagement, underscoring the potential impact of the app’s redesign for Ritchie Bros. Buyers who participated in pre-launch testing converted from search to watchlist at more than double the rate seen on the web platform, and watch-listed items went on to receive a bid within 14 days. “Our buyers operate in fast-paced, high-stakes environments where split-second decisions dictate business success,” said Shiv Dutt, executive vice president and head of RB Marketplaces, Ritchie Bros. “Targeted investments like this modernize our technology to improve the customer experience and represent a significant step forward in enhancing access to our inventory. By engineering a native bidding ecosystem and integrating real-time auction trackers, we are giving our global buyer base the ability to view, compare, bid and buy from anywhere, without friction.” Key Technology and User Experience Enhancements: • Native Bidding & Bid Focus Mode: Buyers can place bids directly from search results and listings, with no browser redirect and see instantly whether they’re winning or have been outbid. • Live Auctions: Buyers can track closing lots in real time and bid with one tap. • Smarter Search & Browsing: Search suggestions and a revamped browsing experience help buyers find relevant inventory faster. • Enhanced Listings: Every listing now includes a revamped inspection report and full photo library, giving buyers more information before they bid. • My RB Tab: A single place to track bids, watchlist items and saved searches, with new matching inventory surfaced as soon as it’s listed. The updated Ritchie Bros. app is available now for iOS and Android through the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. 
