Crews are onsite in Norman, Okla., on a federally-financed project that includes, widening I-35 from four to six lanes, reconstructing interchanges at SH-9 East and Lindsey Street and building new on-
ramps and off-ramps. Workers will reconstruct the north half of the I-35 and SH-9 East Interchange with new ramps and connect Ed Noble Parkway from Lindsey Street to SH9 East. Braided ramps will be constructed to reduce merging conflicts.
They will reconstruct the I-35 and Lindsey Street interchange as a single point urban interchange featuring longer on-ramps and off-ramps and a wider bridge. A single array of traffic signals will be built on top of the bridge to allow large volumes of traf-
The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, AAA and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, announced the finalists in the 2016 America’s Transportation Awards competition. Twelve projects from 10 state departments of transportation are competing for the national Grand Prize and the People’s Choice Award. “From a record 84 nominated projects last spring, we’re down to 12 finalists competing to be called the very best transportation project in America,” said Bud Wright, AASHTO executive director. “This competition shows the excellence in project delivery we see, year after year

State Completes Inspections Following Quake All bridges on the state highway and turnpike system are open to traffic and safe for travel. The Oklahoma Department of Transportation inspected 180 state bridges after a 5.6-magnitude earthquake early Sept. 3 near Pawnee. As part of ODOT’s policy to inspect state highway bridges following an earthquake of 4.7-magnitude or higher, bridges within a 30mi. (48 km) radius of the epicenter of the earthquake were inspected. The department was able to complete these inspections across six counties in less than six hours after the
event. While minor cosmetic damage was noted on two bridges, these bridges are open to traffic and safe for travel. “We are pleased with the speed and efficiency of our crews in their response to this event and dedication to ensuring public safety,” Mike Patterson, ODOT executive director, said. “We offered bridge inspection assistance to cities and counties within the 30-mile radius and in a few instances our offer was accepted.” The department recently went through a rigorous process to develop an earthquake
inspection policy and manual beginning with a 5-mi. (8 km) radius on a 4.7 magnitude. While bridges are designed to withstand a certain amount of vibrations, a 5.6 magnitude is one of the strongest earthquakes the state has experienced. The department will continue to be alert and ready to perform inspections should any aftershock or other fractural disturbance occur in the state. Preservationists Focus on Old Vegas Neighborhoods By Jackie Valley LAS VEGAS SUN
LAS VEGAS (AP) There’s a place in Las Vegas where postal workers still deliver mail door to door, where towering trees cast shadows across large yards hugging houses in spring shades of pink, blue and green — a tapestry that, despite its oddities, feels harmonious. Never stray from a major thoroughfare, and you’ll miss it. These neighborhoods east of Las Vegas Boulevard buck the city’s love affair with newness, reported the Las Vegas Sun. Older than 50 years, the homes conjure an era when families gathered in the street to watch mushroom clouds rise from the desert. Casinos were sprouting, and the growing postwar community needed places to live out the American dream. While much of the original Strip has been razed, these vessels of wood, plaster and classic design remain. “We will never have a building from the 1800s, but the only reason cities like Los Angeles and Boston and Chicago look the way they do is because at some point, someone said, ‘Hey, that building is now 50 years old,’’’ said Heidi Swank, founding director of the Nevada Preservation Foundation. Swank said that before the foundation’s launch nearly three years ago, Las Vegas — the fastestgrowing metropolitan area in the 1990s — was one of only a few U.S. cities without a nonprofit group dedicated to preservation efforts. That might make sense to those who think the city is just implosions on the Strip and explosions of stucco suburbia. But with two full-time employees, 240 members and a bevy of volunteers, the foundation is educating away that myth. “It’s not all about cool buildings,’’ Swank said. “It’s about buildings that embody our history.’’ Recent preservation efforts in southern Nevada have focused on neighborhoods built during or right after World War II, as they harbor midcentury modern architecture or

earlier styles and echo a pivotal era in Las Vegas. The value is less about any individual home and more about the collective feeling. Front porches. Carports. Decorative breeze block. Wood siding embellished with stone and brick. Intricate metal fences lining front yards. Not every house is immaculately kept or a mirror of the past. Many are, but they might share the sidewalk with one sporting a Japanese theme complete with a lawn pagoda. Still, nostalgia persists. “We can look at this neighborhood and say, ‘There were people who lived here in the 1950s. People of our past,’” Swank said. Residents in a slice of ’60s-era Paradise Palms (the region’s first master-planned community and home to many famous Las Vegans back then) are seeking designation as Clark County’s first historic neighborhood. Nearby, residents in an area known as Beverly Green are trying for the Las Vegas Historic Property Register. The Las Vegas Planning Commission recently approved a request from the Beverly Green Neighborhood Association to become a historic district. The final step would be approval from the City Council at a meeting Sept. 21. If it clears that hurdle, Beverly Green will become the second neighborhood to earn the designation since John S. Park did in 2003. Beverly Green sits mere blocks from the Stratosphere. Drive through and you’ll find ranch homes with striking rooflines — pitched, sloping, asymmetrical — and wider footprints, front porches and decorative concrete blocks, all textbook midcentury. All but two houses in the area
were built between 1951 and 1964, and many retain the look of that era. Adding to the appeal, residents say, is the fact that most of the homes were custom. “The real hallmark of vintage Vegas is that even if [properties] were built as tract houses, 60 years later, they don’t look like the house next door,’’ said Jack LeVine, a member of the Historic Preservation Commission and a real estate agent specializing in the charming residential side of old Las Vegas. Swank lives in a Beverly Green home designed by Hugh Taylor, the architect behind the nowdemolished Desert Inn. “I often say I live in Mayberry, because it’s the kind of place where you know everyone on the block,’’ she said. That atmosphere can ripple. From May through July, one robbery, one burglary and several disturbance-related issues were reported to Metro Police in Beverly Green, according to the department’s Crime Mapping tool. Most incidents occurred along the perimeter, and far more reports dot the map directly to the east and south, closer to the tourist-heavy corridor. Whether home buyers are swayed by aesthetics or the insulation of a tight-knit community, the appeal of these older neighborhoods isn’t necessarily widespread. Or maybe it’s not about consumer taste as much as awareness. Scott Beaudry, president of the Greater Las Vegas Association of Realtors, said many people simply don’t know neighborhoods like Beverly Green exist. The local historic designation, he said, might generate awareness of Las Vegas’
picturesque older pockets. Just don’t expect mass migration. “People like shiny and new,’’ Beaudry said. “It’s a very particular subset of buyers who will buy into those neighborhoods.’’ In other words, the residents generally appreciate the historic charm. The Beverly Green Neighborhood Association collected written support from 51 percent of property owners to seek local historic designation, meeting the majority threshold to move forward. Only three property owners were opposed. Swank thinks opposition stems from misconceptions. The designation does not establish any sort of artificial homeowners association, she said, meaning there are no added fees or burdens placed on residents. They can still renovate their bathrooms and paint the exterior whatever color they choose. The goal is to preserve the original integrity of the structure. Historic district design guidelines address exterior features only, such as the type of roof, window or door associated with the architectural style. Guidelines of the city ordinance don’t prohibit the development of access points to buildings required by the Americans with Disabilities Act. It’s “about maintaining what was already there,’’ Swank said. And the foundation isn’t stopping after Beverly Green. If residents show interest in adjacent neighborhoods, such as Huntridge, Mayfair and Biltmore, foundation members plan to help them gather support, navigate the governmental process and go historic. Preservation aside, LeVine said the distinction benefited homeowners because it would result in better-maintained homes, stabilize
property values during downturns and foster a greater sense of community. “It’s really what we want for Las Vegas,’’ he said. In a city that has long looked forward, buoyed by explosive growth, are these neighborhood efforts ushering in a new era of nostalgia? Maybe. As Swank pointed out, “We really only blow up stuff on the Strip.’’ Any conversation about preservation is a step in the right direction for younger cities like Las Vegas, said Christina Morris, the Los Angeles field director for the nonprofit National Trust for Historic Preservation. Just as libraries and walkable markets improve residents’ lives, so does meaningful architecture, she said. Buildings, structures and neighborhoods can evoke emotional responses, usually due to the history they embody. So preservation goes hand in hand with quality of life. Morris said planners in cities big and small should consider this question: “What kind of place are you trying to build and maintain, not just for this decade, but for the next 50 years?’’ It’s a question Swank already is pondering. Las Vegas’ outsize growth in the ‘90s and early 2000s resulted in rows and rows of homes sandwiched together on suburban streets, like one big mass of stucco and tile. Critics may deride these buildings as the byproduct of unbridled expansion, but nonetheless, the homes represent a piece of southern Nevada’s story. The trick will be deciding which neighborhoods and individual homes deserve historic designation. It wouldn’t be possible — or logical — to include everything. “Once those houses get old enough, I think there are going to be some very interesting conversations in preservation,’’ Swank said. “I don’t have an answer yet.’’ Maybe in three or four decades. Mini-Loader Extension Mount Delivers Auger Drive Performance to Reach Tough Areas Unique design capabilities coupled with practical field experience drove the introduction of Digga’s new Mini-Loader Extension Mounts. Designed to provide maximum machine reach into tough-to-reach areas, the new extensions, manufactured by Iowa-based Digga North America, allow mini-loaders to carry the full line of powerful planetary-drive DSS Series on their compact equipment. The extra boom length allows the operator to gain an additional reach of up to 2 ft. (.6 m) depending on the application. The mini-loader extensions will decrease the need for additional auger extensions and accommodate longer 4-ft. (1.2 m)
auger bits while also adding a unique cradle positioned for stability while transporting the drive on site, according to the manufacturer. The new mini-loader extensions are designed to accommodate the Digga DSS Series of compact high-torque planetarydrives, with a sleek compact design that ensures that the drive can fit into a 10-in. (25.4 cm) diameter hole, providing deeper penetration without the need for additional extensions for more efficient operation. In addition, the DSS Series includes a two-piece shaft design that isolates the planetary gears from the pushing, pulling and bending forces without increasing the
load on the bearings. With a high shaft pullout rating and an output shaft that can be replaced without disassembly of the planetary gearbox, the DSS Series will experience less machine downtime than other models, according to the manufacturer. All Digga DSS Auger Drives are covered by warranty protection that includes a 5-year warranty on the planetary gearbox, a 3-year warranty on the hydraulic motor, with lifetime shaft pull-out warranty for extra protection. Innovative Attachments That Are Real Time, Labor Savers GECON Attachments (Giberson Enterprises) has always scoured the globe for cutting edge attachments that are standouts in their areas of application. Being the “Application Specialists,” GECON knows when they have a winner and these two roadwork attachments are no exception. The PL-C is a cold planer in 18, 24 and 40-in. (45.7, 61 and 101.6 cm) sizes, but all with a built in conveyor — the only of its kind in the U.S. market. According to Larry Giberson, owner GECON Attachments, the PL-C “cleans

out the trench 90 to 95 percent,” leaving little clean up that is normally not labor friendly. It saves on brooms and sweepers getting beat to death, too,” he Available in 18, 24, and 40 in. (45.7, 61 and 101.6 cm) sizes, the added. “Once someone see the planer, knows and recogPL-C is the only cold planer on the market with a built in connizes what it is, then sees the built in conveyor and veyor. realizes the [milled] material will get discharged out of the way, it changes everything.” The PL-C is a top-of-the-line quality planer already, and the conveyor simply makes it the “better mouse trap,” according to the manufacturer. The planers will run on any brand skid steer with high flow. To make the unit even better, Simex (the manufacturer) added a performer feature to the machine. This easily visible slider-bar measures the force, resistance and speed at whatever depth is being cut, and clearly shows the optimum level of performance at which the operator should be moving. It takes the guess work out of user judgment and not knowing if the milling process is going too slow. The three models can mill up to 7 in. (17.7 cm) deep. The other attachment that GECON has been selling quite well is the ST200 asphalt float. This is a basic low-flow piece that saves considerable manpower and really speeds up jobs, according to the manufacturer. It’s used to spread fresh asphalt after it’s dropped for small patches or repairs. With a floating screed, or mole-board, it spreads the asphalt uniformly at an easily adjustable height above grade. The hydraulically adjustable wings in the front allows it to corral and push the skimmed off asphalt forward and continue to cover and spread the asphalt in a specifically defined area before compaction. The side-shift feature is advantageous so the skid is not running over the asphalt or if there may not be a drivable path for the skid. The wings can be adjusted at different angles as well. “A lot of the guys really like that side-shift functionality, especially being able to shift it over 5 feet or more,” said Giberson. “It’s excellent for backfilling the dirt into trenches, too. The videos on our website make it really easy to see just how beneficial and simple the asphalt float is.” “The simplicity is just awesome. We’ve sold next to no
The ST 200 asphalt float features side float functionality for shoulders and trench work.
spare parts or wear parts on these things. There’s just very little to go wrong. We sell them and then rarely hear back from our customers, except for the occasional exuberance about the ST. That’s how trouble-free they are. Then we call them and find out their crews are fighting over their ST200. “The affordability of these attachments makes it harder for me to keep them in stock,” added Eric “Woody” Woodward, of GECON Attachments. “The ROI on these is so rapid. I had one customer sum it up to me like this: ‘The [ST] saved me 2 ½ men this past year and allowed me to train them in other areas that made my operation stronger. That’s always great to hear back from our customers. Anytime you can help customers save money or add considerable profitability back into their business it’s a Win-Win.” GECON Attachments will be displaying these two money saving units and other cutting edge roadwork attachments at the upcoming NY State Highway & Public Works Expo in October in Syracuse and at the UTCA show in Atlantic City prior, in September. “I expect it to be tremendous show in New York,” said Giberson, “since half of our asphalt float sales have been to government agencies who are always under pressure to save [budgeted] money and become more efficient.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s website at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)

UNM Plans $180M in Construction Over Four Years ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) The University of New Mexico is planning $180 million in construction projects on campus over the next four years, including a proposed building that has been described as “a new public face” for the university. It’s planning six new projects over the next four years that will bring new buildings and updated classrooms to the campus, The Albuquerque Journal reported. The most expensive project calls for the destruction of a decades-old water reservoir that will be replaced with a building that will house astronomy, physics and other science programs. In total the new science facility will cost $66 million. University architect Amy Coburn has said the planned building will come to redefine the campus.

Funding for that project comes from severance tax bonds, UNM institutional bonds and a general obligation bond awaiting voter approval. Another project is renovation of what’s arguably the most walked-on area of campus, the Smith Plaza outside the library. Program planning officer Tabia Murray Allred said the plaza is showing the wear and tear of hundreds of thousands walking across it and needs repairs. That project will cost $4 million and will be paid for with an institutional bond. “Smith Plaza is right in the middle of our campus and needs to also be the heart of campus,” Bob Frank, president of UNM said. “I envision it as a gathering space or common area for students, faculty, staff and visitors to enjoy. It needs to be updated, not only to make it more accessible and inviting, but also to make it more functional and fun.” Other renovations include a $35 million expansion to Johnson Gym, which is a recreation center, updates to the Farris Engineering Center, a new health education building and replacing the Anderson School of Management building. The Anderson project will be funded through $24 million from private donors and institutional bonds. $21.5M Project...
CDOT Awards Crossroads Bridge Project to Sterling Construction Co. Sterling Construction Company Inc. announced that its subsidiary, Ralph L. Wadsworth Construction Company LLC (RLW) was selected by the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) to reconstruct the Crossroads Bridge on I-25 in Larimer County, Colo. Sterling’s contract is worth approximately $21.5 million. Construction is scheduled to begin September 2016 and be completed by the end of 2017. Sterling will be responsible for the reconstruction of the I25 interchange at Crossroads Boulevard and the associated roadway. The work includes the removal of two existing three-span bridges, and their replacement with two wider single-span bridges. In addition, approximately 1.5 mi. (2.4 km) of the I-25 roadway will be reconstructed. Traffic on I25 will be maintained through the use of a temporary paved crossover and a temporary bridge structure. Paul J. Varello, Sterling’s CEO said, “We are proud to be selected by the Colorado Department of Transportation to replace the Crossroads Bridge on I-25, which will help to alleviate a traffic flow squeeze under the I-25 bridges across
Crossroads Boulevard. “The two-lane road under the bridges is often congested, especially during rush hour and periodic special events in the area. Replacing the I-25 bridges with wider-span bridges and a wider road beneath will certainly reduce the inconvenience drivers experienced in the past. This is one of several projects that we have under way in Colorado, which is on the leading edge of the transportation infrastructure upgrades so urgently needed throughout the United States.” Sterling is a heavy civil construction company that specializes in the building and reconstruction of transportation and water infrastructure projects in Texas, Utah, Nevada, Colorado, Arizona, California, Hawaii and other states in which there are construction opportunities. Its transportation infrastructure projects include highways, roads, bridges, airfields, ports and light rail. Its water infrastructure projects include water, wastewater and storm drainage systems. Kewalo Basin’s $20M Improvement Plan Includes Fuel Dock, Security Cameras HONOLULU (AP) A $20 million improvement plan is moving forward at Kewalo Basin. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports Howard Hughes Corp. leases the state-owned harbor and intends to install a fuel dock, security cameras and new Wi-Fi system. Docks will be replaced, water, sewage and electrical systems will be improved, and 70 new slips will add to the 144 already at the harbor. Hawaii Community Development Authority recently voted 6-2 to approve the plan. The harbor began as a wharf in 1920 and started to fall into disrepair under Department of Transportation management. About a third of the slips were either condemned or unfit to use in 2007 when the state agency prepared to take over and improve the harbor. Almar Management was contracted to run daily operations and occupancy rose from 40 percent to almost full after state-funded improvements. Hughes Corp. became the tentative pick for renovation work in 2014. Its

lease said the corporation has to pay the authority $550,000 initially and an estimated $14 million in rent over 30 years. The corporation’s 60 acres nearby is becoming a community with condos and retail called Ward Village. Hughes Corp. is also working on a separate $6 million plan on either side of the harbor that will include parking and lifeguard operations. “There is much needed work for safety, security, and overall improvement to the piers and infrastructure at Kewalo Harbor that this approval will allow us to undertake,” said Todd Apo,
Hughes Corp. vice president of community development, in a statement. “As we move forward, we are excited to bring these upgrades to the community, creating an exceptional experience for Kewalo Harbor businesses and visitors.” Construction on the three-year project is expected to begin by early 2017 at the latest. The new Hydrema U.S. Inc. headquarters is located at 4515 Hemmingway Trail, Cumming, Ga.
T
his summer was busy for the staff of Hydrema U.S. Inc. as they moved the company’s headquarters in Alpharetta, Ga., northward to a new purpose-built facility in Cumming, Ga. Cunningham & Associates based in Dawsonville, Ga., was selected as the general contractor for the construction project. The facility, which was built with exposed frontage on major roadway thoroughfare GA400/U.S. 19, was completed on time with minimal construction challenges. The front portion of the structure features two stories of office/conference room space and a mezzanine, and the remaining two-thirds of the overall square footage to the rear of the facility is devoted to a parts warehouse, machine prep area and shop space. Company officials said that being in a larger facility allows for enhanced parts stocking capabilities, including the ability to stock large quantities of tires for all Hydrema offroad truck models. The increase in overall acreage of the property provides additional areas for stocking whole goods, including the Hydrema 912HM side-dump off-road truck. The new facility is located at 4515 Hemingway Trail, Cumming, Ga., 30041. For more information, call 404/614-1747 or visit www.hydrema.com. UNTIMED POWER BOOST: STRENGTH ON YOUR SCHEDULE We know what it’s like to sit in the operator’s seat when you hit solid rock. The power boost button on most excavators can deliver the extra force you need to break through – but only in short bursts. We knew there had to be a better way, so we took our jobsite experience and collaborated with our engineers. The result is an untimed power boost that comes standard in all KOBELCO conventional excavators from the SK210LC to the SK500LC. It provides all the extra muscle you need continuously so you can power through the toughest jobs without interruption.

fic to negotiate the area. Crews also will erect a sound wall and retaining walls along the I-35 construction site. I-35 will be widened from south of Main Street to the South Canadian River, completing a larger project to widen the highway from Oklahoma City to Norman. As part of the project, the city of Norman is partnering with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation to construct a drainage structure and add artwork and landscaping to the new Lindsey Street bridge to reflect the Cherokee Gothic style of architecture at the University of Oklahoma. About $4 million in local funds from the city of Norman will pay for bridge aesthetics and construction of a drainage structure. Construction on the I-35 project ODOT photo started in March 2015 and work is expected to conclude in spring of 2017. Sherwood Construction Co. Inc. of Tulsa is contractor for the project. Partners on the project include Oklahoma Department of Transportation, CEC Infrastructure Solutions of Oklahoma City for lab and project administration assistance, city of Norman and U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration, Oklahoma Division for project coordination and contract compliance. Current heavy equipment on site includes cement trucks, cranes, bulldozers, backhoes, scrapers and pile drivers. Highway Improvements Will Ease Congestion Along I-35 IMPROVEMENTS from page 32
Traffic Impacts Two lanes of northbound and southbound I-35 will remain open to traffic in each direction during construction, as well as most onramps and off-ramps. However, some nighttime lane and ramp closers are planned. The Lindsey Street bridge over I-35 and the Lindsey Street on-ramps and off-ramps will be closed until early 2017. “The major impact to the community is the closure of the Lindsey Street interchange for reconstruction,” Boyd said. “Lindsey Street is a major commercial corridor, so detouring traffic to SH-9 east and back to Lindsey Street is a challenge. Fortunately, ODOT and the city of Norman have worked closely together on this project to keep the public informed and preserve access to business.” Drivers can expect congestion and delays on I-35, especially during morning and
were originally constructed in 1967. They have exceeded their design life and traffic capacity, Boyd said. He added that safety will be improved with the project. “The ramps at Lindsey Street and SH-9 east did not meet current design standards and interchanges could not handle the traffic demand,” Boyd said.
ODOT photo
“The contractor removed the old Lindsey Street bridge and is currently working on construction of the new single-point urban interchange and tying the ramps in with nearby SH-9 east interchange,” Boyd said. “Reconstruction and widening of mainline I-35 is also being done concurrently with the two interchanges,” he said.
More than 155,000 vehicles travel I-35 in the Norman area daily. I-35 and the interchanges at Lindsey Street and SH-9 east were originally constructed in 1967.
evening rush hour. To avoid traffic, they can use U.S.-77 and SH-77H (Sooner Road) as detour routes. “The contractor has a very aggressive schedule and has performed a lot of night work to lessen the impact to I-35 traffic during rush hour,” Boyd said. “Some of the work, including the removal of the old Lindsey Street bridge and hanging of new bridge beams over I-35, requires night work since the interstate must be intermittently closed by rolling roadblock.”
Growth, Traffic Necessitate Improvements The Oklahoma City metro area has experienced significant growth along the I-35 corridor south to Norman and beyond. In 1979, ODOT began widening I-35 to six lanes from downtown Oklahoma City to the South Canadian River in Norman and this project completes that effort. More than 155,000 vehicles travel I-35 in the Norman area daily. I-35 and the interchanges at Lindsey Street and SH-9 east
Project Designed to Improve Access The project will increase capacity in a very congested area and improve interstate access. Reconstruction of the SH-9 east interchange included a connection to the Ed Noble Parkway on the west side of I-35, providing new access to a major retail and entertainment area of Norman. Weather Proved Challenging “Heavy rains in May and June 2015 caused some flooding in the work zone and the unusually wet summer slowed the pace of work on SH-9 east,” Boyd said. “This isn’t expected to significantly delay completion of the project.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s website at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.) Overhead Power Achieves Indoor Mobility With Sennebogen Economical. Efficient. Long service life. Low maintenance costs. The advantages of an electric material handler are easy to understand. For many operations, though, the question of mobility presents a challenge. Many electric-drive machines are connected to their power source by a length of cable, but the cable itself may be an obstacle in confined work spaces. At the Nickelhütte Aue metalsprocessing plant in eastern Germany, managers and the team from Sennebogen looked up, and found a solution. Sennebogen recently delivered an electric-drive 825 M model material handler to the Nickelhütte large indoor facility, where it recycles and remarkets a wide range of non-ferrous metals. The 825 performs loading tasks throughout the 480 ft. (146 m) long structure. Due to an overhead power solution, the
As Nickelhütte ships a wide range of non-ferrous metals to customers in 45 countries, the overhead power supply allows the Sennebogen 825 M the flexibility to roam and sort orders efficiently.
825’s mobility is completely unrestricted. A ceiling-mounted trolley crane delivers power to the material handler, keeping the electrical cables out of the way of floor operations. According to Nickelhuette, “This solution is unique, but it’s easy to implement.” A rotary feedthrough on the upper carriage ensures that the cable is securely connected with the machine. The supply cable is guided along with each movement of the machine via a ceiling crane, automatically tracking the deflection of the cable to move anywhere it’s needed.
The management of the Nickelhütte facility said “Electric drives are the future for us, not the least because we generate electricity ourselves at the plant.”
Future-Oriented Technology Saves Energy and Protects the Environment “Committed to progress — connected to tradition” is the motto of Nickelhütte Aue, founded in 1635. The firm’s progress led to today’s see Nickelhütte page 38

their service standards. With this purchase, we feel confident that our production efficiency will increase by as much as 30 percent compared to a traditional solution. The 12-hour set-up time is extraordinary,” said Udit Mittal, director, M/s M G Contractors Pvt Ltd. Unique Design Features Increase Production and Cost Efficiency Setting up a conventional portable crushing and screening plant normally takes at least a week and often requires preparations with foundations and other site conditions. In addition, equip-
ment transportation can be difficult and require special arrangements. The NW Rapid is the first and only compact wheel-mounted crushing plant on the market that fits compactly into standard 40-ft. (12 m) containers, allowing it to be easily transported from one place to another by sea, rail or truck. Fast installation and dismantling is facilitated with hydraulically fineadjustable support legs, hopper walls and screen lifting. “Cost-efficiency achieved by easy set-up and flexibility serves our customers in the emerging markets particularly well, since it is important to be able to swiftly
move production to where the construction projects are situated,” said Julius Mäkelä, product manager, Portable Solutions, Metso. The NW Rapid Series includes equipment for multiple aggregate production needs, such as portable jaw crushing, cone crushing as well as horizontal and vertical shaft impactor plants. With these products, customers can set up multistage crushing and screening plants for high-quality end products as well as for ballast production. The NW Rapid crushing and screening plant can be fed by excavator, wheel loader or dump trucks. Ready-made layouts cover screen
feed and cone feed applications, with and without surge hoppers and field conveyors. The increased capacity is mainly achieved by the powerful Nordberg GP220 cone crusher and the new four-deck dual-slope screen, enabling higher screening performance. The whole process can be precisely adjusted by a process control system. “The new Metso IC50C process control system forms a seamless combination between the primary crushing stage and the secondary crushing & screening stage of the plant. The whole process, including field conveyors, can be started and stopped with the push of a single button, making daily operations safe and easy,” said Mäkelä. The NW Rapid complies with European safety standards, and it can be issued with a CE marking. For more information, visit www.metso.com. Firm Estimates Sennebogen 825 M Helps Achieve 50 Percent Savings Nickelhütte from page 35 specialization in the export of chemicals, metallic salts, nonferrous scrap metals, copper-alloy blocks and concentrates, shipping to 45 countries worldwide. Its electric-drive material handler sorts, loads, and moves many types of metal scrap through its storage halls. The company estimates that it achieves a 50 percent savings in energy and operating costs when compared to diesel machines. Indoors, the electric equipment has the added advantage of working quietly and trouble-free in a high dust environment with no filter changing needed and no exhaust gases to overcome. Current Supply From the Ceiling for Maximum Mobility The setup is extremely simple and could easily be retrofit into existing structures. The ceiling crane is controlled by sensing the deflection of the cable. Regardless of the direction in which the machine moves, or how the carriage is slewed, the deflection of the cable directs the crane bridge and crane trolley to follow, while the operator remains focused on the loading work. Henry Sobieraj, the managing director of the Nickelhütte facility, is enthusiastic about the implementation by Sennebogen. “Electric drives are the future for us,” he said, “not the

Terex Implements Plan for Fuchs Material Handlers Terex Corporation continues to implement a series of strategic moves and investments to better position its purpose-built Fuchs material handler business for global expansion and sales growth. Recently, the business was rebranded “Fuchs – A Terex Brand” in key markets for consistent global brand recognition. The Fuchs line also transitioned to the Terex material processing segment, which is a better strategic fit for the business within the broader Terex portfolio. Additionally, multiple new machine introductions were made at key international trade shows during the first two quarters of 2016, including the ISRI 2016 Convention in Las Vegas, Nev., and bauma and IFAT 2016 held in Munich, Germany. “The purpose-built Fuchs material handlers are integral to the long-term Terex business strategy and a natural fit in the materials processing segment,” said Kieran Hegarty, president of Terex Materials Processing. “We intend to grow and expand the Fuchs business globally beyond the line’s traditional scrap markets into such markets as timber, recycling and ports.” Commenting on several recent strategic sales and support actions taken to increase material handler customer support, Ron de Vries, general manager of the Fuchs business globally, said, “In conjunction with the transition to materials processing, we appointed Jon Van Ruitenbeek as the new business line director for Fuchs in North America, and we have announced several key sales and support management appointments for key North American and European markets, which will give Fuchs more interaction with customers during the sales process and provide customers with a higher level support from the factory. Additionally, we are con-
tinuing to focus on growing distribution globally, so customers will experience more responsive service and parts support locally.” Accelerated investment in Fuchs’ new product development with a number of new initiatives has resulted in multiple announcements of new models and model upgrades. Two completely new model class designs recently introduced — the Fuchs MHL390 F and MHL370 F — give customers more material handling options to fill a wider variety of application needs. Designed to deliver the long reach and high lift capacities required in port applications globally, the new Fuchs MHL390 F handler boasts operating weights ranging from 168,000 to 191,800 lb. (76,203 to 86,999 kg). It features a broad outrigger base to provide excellent stability when lifting heavy loads at extended reaches of up to 80.4 ft. (24.5 m). An available banana boom configuration enables the handler to effectively reach deep into a vessel’s hull for port applications. The new 120,000-lb. (54,431 kg) class high-capacity Fuchs MHL370 F handler boasts a reach of up to 59.9 ft. (18 m), giving the North American market a much needed machine to fill the production demands of large, high-volume scrap operations processing material with mega shredders. The MHL370 F delivers increased lift capacity over the smaller Fuchs MHL360 F material handler, while an elevating cab provides a maximum eye-level operation of 20 ft. (6.1 m) and independent cab forward movement of 7.2 ft. (2.2 m), which is critical for port applications, according to the manufacturer. Fuchs also introduced upgrades to its MHL320 F handler,
designed as an entry level unit for recycling, solid waste and small scrap operations who need the high lift capacities at extended reaches, efficient sorting capabilities and fast trailer loading/unloading only delivered by purpose-built handlers. Additionally, the business segment unveiled the new purpose-built Fuchs cab design at ISRI that will hit the market in the fourth quarter of 2016. The sleek new cab design incorporates more glass to advance visibility, new joystick steering control for improved maneuverability and a revised interior for more space and greater operator comfort. Another cornerstone to the Terex growth strategy for the material handler product line is to make more use out of the Fuchs application center at the machine manufacturing facility in Germany. It’s here where Fuchs team members work closely with customers to design one-off handling solutions. A complete team consisting of Fuchs distributors, sales representatives, engineers and technicians partner with the customer with one common goal in mind: custom design a machine for the best fit to a specific niche need of the customer. “These are exciting times for the Fuchs business,” said de Vries on the Fuchs expansion and growth strategy backed by Terex. “We are significantly strengthening the Fuchs team, increasing local support by growing our distribution network, broadening and updating our purpose-built handler line for the market, and customizing our equipment to meet specific application needs for our customers. It’s a good time to be a Fuchs material handler customer.” For more information, visit www.terex-fuchs.com. Titan’s New Unibody Hopper Trailer Has More Payload As factory staff prepared the newest engineering development from Titan Trailers, founder and president Mike Kloepfer set his mind back to the origins of his firm. “We started out with the newest ideas in grain trailers for local farm truckers. Forty years later, after everything Titan has built, here we are rolling out a completely unique concept in grain trailer design. Again.” The latest innovation from the fertile minds of Titan engineering is a hopper trailer that sheds more than 2,000 lbs. (907 kg) from the weight of previous trailers, offering operators the potential to earn dramatic increases in their profit-per-load, according to the manufacturer. Unibody: The Right Idea Kloepfer took on the effort to rethink hopper design early in 2012. Still closely connected to farm communities, he understood that lower weight was still their ultimate goal when purchasing a new grain trailer. “We didn’t set out to create a unibody trailer,” said Kloepfer. “We were out to see how much weight we could take out of a grain trailer without compromising strength
and performance. When we combined the modular hopper structure with our THINWALL aluminum body, we realized we had a unibody design. Unibody was the solution, not the objective.” At Home in Farming Country Kloepfer himself grew up in the small town of Harley, Ontario, located in the rich stretch of Ontario farm country that’s bisected by the Highway 401 corridor from Quebec to Michigan. Truckers and farmers have always been part of his daily life. A tireless builder with an inquisitive mind, he turned his barn into a workshop at a young age to begin hand-building trailers for friends, neighbors and even family. Hopper trailers were a new idea at the time, so Kloepfer made it his business to deliver them to local customers. New ideas are still the driving force behind the success that Kloepfer and his company enjoy today. Trimming Out a Ton of Excess Weight Unibody brings together Titan’s signature THINWALL extruded aluminum body and a new modular hopper design. In true uni-
body fashion, the outer skin welded to the internal hopper structure achieves uniform strength and resilience throughout the trailer, while discarding the weight of the traditional chassis. The efficient design allows Titan to prebuild its hopper sections and simplify final assembly with the THINWALL body. Its center section is a key point of the trailer’s strength. It acts as a 3 ft. (.9 m) high support beam that eliminates the need for heavy crossmembers. Further weight reductions were achieved with an aluminum 5th wheel assembly and landing gear. By eliminating crossmembers from the design, Titan was able to set the hoppers lower in the body and reduce the overall height of the trailers. With both the 4axle and 5-axle units that were at the Titan display in the Outdoor Farm Show in Woodstock, Ontario, the sidewalls are now 6 in. (15 cm) lower than previous models. The unibody feature provides better visibility into the trailer while being top loaded. As well, the trailers actually sit lower than the roof of the trucks, so there’s less wind drag and as a result, less fuel is consumed on the highway, according to the manufacturer.
Details for Strength and Productivity Conversations with his farm customers suggested more ideas to Kloepfer that he could incorporate into the new hopper design. The rear door opens and closes hydraulically with no gearbox to service. A redesigned top sill is now integrated into a one-piece extrusion with the top sidewall extrusion. The top rail also has been rounded to minimize wear on tarps. “The farmers I know tend to run from the field to the elevator in the summer, then from the elevator to the processing plant in winter, so we could really see the need to suit both applications in one design,” Kloepfer said. “We were able to decrease weight while we increased strength substantially by putting metal in just the right places. High-Lift Suspension System Standard The hopper trailers also take advantage of another Titan innovation to smooth out the bumps and rolls of travelling over farm lanes and fields. Paramax high-lift steering axle suspensions, introduced by Titan in 2011, provide a full 10 in. (25.4 cm) of lift to avoid damage to the trailer and extend tire life on rough terrain while providing a 30 degree turn radius on the road. SPIF compliant Paramax systems are specified as standard equipment on all Titan unibody hoppers. Expanding the Line-Up The first 4-axle and 5-axle models of the unibody hopper trailer will operate in Ontario, Quebec, New York and Michigan, and are recommended for a wide range of bulk farm materials including corn and grains, soy beans, sand, whole grains and meals. These units will soon be followed by new models including 6-axle and 7-axle trailers for Ontario and Quebec as well as tridem and B-Train models for use throughout North America. Gooseneck Model Line…
Felling Trailers X-Force SL Series Features ‘Super Low’ Deck Felling Trailers Inc.’s, X-Force hydraulic detachable gooseneck model line now offers a “Super Low” deck height with the X-Force SL Series. The X-Force SL Series provides an 18 in. (45.7 cm) usable level deck height with a 6 in. (15 cm) ground clearance, making it an ideal spec for carriers that specialize in extra-tall cargo/equipment transport. The low loaded deck height is ideal for a multitude of applications due to the full width level deck as opposed to a drop-side model. Felling Trailers designed and engineered the SL Series with versatility and functionality in mind, knowing that with changing markets, carrier’s cargo/equipment loads vary. The versatility offered with the 18 in. usable level deck height allows a carrier to transport cargo/equipment as asphalt milling machines, paving equipment, track excavators, etc. that have tall transport heights, ultimately keeping the carrier’s wheels and payday rolling, according to the manufacturer. The SL Series are offered in four capacities; XF-70-2 HDG-SL (35 ton [31.7 t] capacity), XF100-3 HDGSL (50 ton [45 t] capacity), XF-110-3 HDG-SL (55 ton [50 t] capacity), and XF-120-3 HDG-SL (60 ton [54 t] capacity). Elliott Complements Enpak, All-In-One Fuel Savings Fuel economy and reduced emissions are goals worth meeting. For customers running auxiliary power packs, the on demand loadsense system built by Elliott Machine Works Inc. will work in tandem to meet today's energy recommendations. Elliott’s hydraulic driven pumping system has an auto shut-down feature that allows the Enpak or Vanair All-In-One to start up and run when the control nozzle of an oil system is opened. Once the nozzle is closed, the system will shut down automatically, providing better fuel economy. This means the engine will only run during the oil pumping process, and not during the time it takes to change the filter, drain the old oil, climb on top of the machine, etc. Elliott Machine Works Inc. also has designed two carriers for these auxiliary power packs to solve mounting and space problems. Both are designed to bolt on to the truck frame rail and one is equipped with a slide out for accessibility and maintenance if mounted below a platform or van body deck.
