The I-10 Marsh Station project is located between mileposts 289 and 292. The project encompassed the construction of a new traffic interchange that can accommodate most commercial truck traffic, the extension of Marsh Station Road and drainage improvements. The project also includes realigning approximately 3 mi. (4.8 km) of the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) line to the north side of I10. The $10 million endeavor was made possible by American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds, which, in 2009, appropriated $27.5 billion for U.S. highway and bridge projects. Work on the interchange began in November of 2009. The interchange was opened to traffic Dec. 20, 2010. As the new ramps opened, the old interchange closed. Additional work, such as painting and landscaping, were finalized in February 2011. The old Marsh Station Bridge was removed on April 8th. FNF Construction Inc. of Tempe, Ariz., was the prime contractor. They were in charge of grading and hauling of material, paving the new ramps and mainline I-10, and construction of the new bridge. FNF has been in business since 1984, working mainly in heavy-highway construction and general engineering work. Subcontractors include Fierro Utility Construction Services Inc. of Phoenix; Hunter Guardrail & Fence Inc. of see PROJECT page 12

WASHINGTON (AP) Builders broke ground on more new homes in March, giving the weak U.S. housing market a slight boost at the start of the spring buying season. Home construction rose 7.2 percent in March from February to a seasonally adjusted 549,000 units, the Commerce Department said April 19. Building permits, an indi-
cator of future construction, rose 11.2 percent after hitting a fivedecade low in February. Still, the building pace is far below the 1.2 million units a year that economists consider healthy. And March’s improvement came after construction fell in February to its second-lowest level on record dating back more than a half-century. Millions of foreclosures have see CONSTRUCTION page 38

HONOLULU (AP) Gov. Neil Abercrombie said he’s spending $300 million for Hawaii construction projects modernizing airports, repairing schools, improving hurricane shelters, building school libraries and fixing roads. The Democratic governor said in a statement April 7 these projects will create jobs and stimulate the economy. The money for these projects comes from the state’s capital improvement budget, which is backed by bonds and doesn’t directly affect Hawaii’s projected $1.3 billion estimated budget deficit over the next two years. The Legislature previously appropriated money for the projects, but the governor must release it before it can be used. Abercrombie said he wants to build vital infrastructure for the state and invest in its workforce. Abercrombie also is asking the Legislature for another $1.7 billion in capital improvement money over the next two years.

Coast Crane Adds a Dozen Grove Rough-Terrain Cranes
Manitowoc and Coast Crane Company, a ubsidiary of Essex Rental Corp., recently celbrated a major order of Grove rough-terrain ranes. The order was for a variety of rough-terrain ranes for a total of 12, including two new RT9150Es, the newest RT from Grove aunched last year. It is the largest rough-terrain rane currently in production globally. “Coast Crane made a major investment in its ental fleet and in its continuing relationship with Manitowoc Cranes,” said Dave Hull, senor vice president of sales of Manitowoc, North America. Hull said the RT9150Es specifically would e a major benefit to Coast Crane’s business. “We’re confident that these state of the art ranes will help us significantly grow our rental usiness and provide a strong return on investment because of the cranes’ class leading reach nd capacity,” said Terry Howard, executive ice president and COO of Coast Crane. The RT9150E combines the main boom each of 197 ft. (60 m) with the largest capaciy on the market, 150 ton (136 t). Coast Crane bought the cranes from Manitowoc as part of its relationship with Manitowoc as a direct customer. For more information, visit www.maniowoc.com.

I-10 Marsh Station Project to Conclude Later This Year PROJECT from page 1
Glendale; Pacific Coast Steel, also of Glendale; Revegetation Services DBA East Valley Golf of Higley; Royden Construction Co. of Phoenix, and Temcon Concrete Construction Co. of Tempe. Excavation included 1 million cu. yds. (801,312 cu m) of balanced earthwork was for the new Marsh Station TI/road and UPRR rail-road tracks. The UPRR bridge required 702 cu. yds. (537 cu m) of concrete, and the Marsh Station bridge used 937 cu. yds. (716.8 cu m) of concrete for construction. Approximately 16,407 tons (14,881 t) of asphalt was used for the new Marsh Station TI and road. The Benefits • The new Marsh Station traffic interchange has been constructed to accommodate trucks with a clearance of 16.5 ft. (5 m) Currently, trucks over 15 ft. must use State Routes 83, 82 and 90 as a detour off I-10. The 67-mi.(107.8 km) detour goes through the town of Sonoita. The detour is costly and time consuming for trucks along this important interstate route, and the cost of the detour gets passed on to the consumer. The project will enable efficient travel, and save money for the consumer through trucking cost reductions. • State Route 83 is a winding and hilly two-lane highway, and the many large trucks using the detour back up traffic as they slowly maneuver along this roadway, frustrating drivers along this scenic route. The project will enhance safety for many drivers and allow those traveling along scenic SR 83 to enjoy the drive. • ADOT constructed a level bed for a new railroad align-
ment that will run north of I-10 and used the excavated earth in constructing the new traffic interchange. This was a costeffective way to use materials wisely. • The Union Pacific Railroad will remove the old railroad

bridge in late 2011, once the new railroad is constructed. When both old bridges are removed, over-height trucks will be able to safely pass through the new traffic interchange, and they will no longer need to use the detour. Aesthetic Treatments • Joe Salazar, ADOT landscape project manager and landscape architect, designed the artwork found on the traffic interchange. The colorful artwork reflects the riparian area surrounding the interchange. Water patterns/ripples are represented on the bridge piers and barriers. • A water bird, representative of water bird motifs found on ancient pottery in the area, can be found on the wing walls of the bridge. The artist’s personal interpretation of the bird, with its head and beak held downward, symbolizes the riparian area as the bird appears to be perhaps diving into water for fish. • A tan and southwestern brick palette on the artwork blends with the area’s environment. • Hundreds of cactuses were removed from the site and placed in a nursery nearby. The cactuses were replanted in the project area. Irrigation will be used for two years to reestablish the vegetation. “There were a few minor delays on the project for transplanting plants, holiday traveling lane restrictions and leadbase paint removal on the bridge. Rain and wind also set us back a couple of days, but the crews are caught up at this time,” said Jeremy Moore, ADOT resident engineer. The project will conclude later this year with the demolition of the old UPRR bridge. CEG

Ritchie Bros. to Begin Building New Site in Napavine, Wash. After nearly 40 years of conducting unreserved public auctions in the state of Washington, Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers officially closed on the purchase of a new 200acre auction site in Washington State — in Napavine, Lewis County. The new Napavine property, located approximately 22 mi. south of Olympia and 70 mi. north of Portland, Ore., will replace the company’s current Washington permanent auction site in Olympia, which yields only 37-acres of equipment display area. Construction of a new auction facility, complete with a full-service refurbishment facility and a larger equipment yard, will commence in May, with an expected completion date targeted for the summer of 2012. “Closing on our new Napavine property in Lewis County is good news for Ritchie Bros. and good news for our customers,” said Rob Giroux, divisional manager, Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers. “Over the coming year we look forward to the construction of a new auction facility and larger equipment yard that will provide our customers in the region with a more accessible, comfortable and convenient space to buy and sell their
equipment.” Ritchie Bros. held its first unreserved public auction in the state of Washington in 1972, and its first unreserved auction at its current Olympia auction site in November 1991. Since then, the company has conducted a total of 84 auctions in the Olympia area or roughly four auctions per year. Since 2000, Olympia auctions have attracted more than 100,000 bidder registrations from 79 countries and featured more than 84,000 lots. In 2010, to accommodate increased customer demand, Ritchie Bros. conducted five auctions at the Olympia site. “We are very excited about Ritchie Bros. officially becoming a member of the local business community here in Lewis County,” said Dick Larman, executive director, Lewis County Economic Development Council. “The company's auction events will generate direct and indirect jobs and have a ripple effect for Lewis County restaurants and hotels during auction time, as well as generate significant state and local tax revenue.” Approximately 100 acres of land at the new Napavine site will be improved to house auction facilities and equipment dis-
play area, with 80-acres being developed as open green space with large berms, landscape, buffers and storm water ponds. Ritchie Bros. plans to build a 33,000-sq.-ft. auction building—with seating capacity for 750 people. The auction facility also will feature a second auction theater with a virtual ramp and seating capacity for 300 people. In the virtual ramp theater, photos of equipment are projected onto a large screen in front of a seated bidding crowd for them to bid on. The new Napavine permanent auction site also will include 10 timed auction lot (TAL) kiosks for customers to bid on smaller consumer items, attachments and assets. The service is currently available at the company’s Olympia auction site and allows customers to place bids a few days before and during the live auction, either online at rbauction.com, using on-site internet kiosks, mobile devices, or by proxy. Free wireless internet for customers will be available to support TAL and online bidding at the site. Additional site facilities scheduled for construction include a new full-service 16,000-sq.-ft. refurbishment facility, complete with an equipment wash area and
painting and blasting booths, and a 2,800sq.-ft. check-in building. Other amenities include an on-site catering facility offering food services and a 10 acre customer parking lot. “The development team from Ritchie Bros. has been one of the most professional groups I have ever worked with in my 28year career,” added Larman. “They have gone beyond what has been needed in an extraordinary way. I look forward to continuing our strong relationship with them through this next phase of the project.” Ritchie Bros. will continue conducting unreserved auctions at its Olympia auction site until the new auction site in Napavine is complete. The next auction to be held in Olympia is scheduled for June 16, 2011.The company has started to explore different options for disposition and/or redevelopment of the current Olympia property. Lewis County dignitaries, friends and associates will join Ritchie Bros. management for an official ground breaking ceremony at the Napavine site on May 12. AGC Names Firms as Nation’s Safest Construction Companies The Associated General Contractors of America named 39 firms as the nation’s safest construction companies. The association, which oversees the Construction Safety Excellence Awards, an annual ranking of construction safety programs, noted that these companies were recognized for the strength of their safety programs and their overall safety performance during 2010. “For the construction industry, protecting employees is a top priority,” said Ted Aadland, the association’s past president and the CEO of Portland, Ore.-based Aadland Evans Constructors Inc. “Completed projects don’t mean anything if worker safety is compromised.” Aadland said that these companies were selected because of their strong commitment to safety. He noted that the companies were dedicated to the development and implementation of premier safety and loss prevention programs. The companies also demonstrated outstanding leadership in safety and occupation health management, risk control, safety training, work site hazard identification and control, and safety program innovation. The following companies received first place for their safety programs: Miller Bros. Construction Inc. of Archbold, Ohio; Austin

Terex TL310 Wheel Loader Offers Powerful Performance Making its debut in North America, the new Terex TL310 wheel loader handles bucket capacities of 4 to 6 cu. yds. (3.0 to 4.5 cu m) and has a bucket breakout force of 34,534 lb. (153,600 N). Features include the Terex loading system, a spacious operating cab and a powerful cooling system with reversible fan, similar to that on the company’s TL210 and TL260 wheel loaders. Powered by a 203-hp (151 kW) Cummins turbocharged diesel engine, the TL310 meets the latest Tier III emission standards. The loader’s transverse-mounted design protects the engine from job site debris and damage during operation. The traction, provided by the load-limit-controlled hydrostatic VarioPower system, makes the power loader capable of accelerating to 25 mph (40 kmh) quickly. The hydrostatic drive also functions as a wear-free brake when the machine is in forward and reverse drive. The TL310’s high-performance hydraulics include a load-sensing flow-distribution function. These key components help ensure highly coordinated, responsive and smooth working cycles in every phase, even at low engine speeds. In addition, the hydrostatic technology contributes to better fuel efficiency, according to the manufacturer.
Boasting an operating weight of 38,801 lb. (17,600 kg), the TL310 is built for powerful performance with a straight tipping load of 29,101 lb. (13,200 kg), an articulated tipping load of 25,352 lb. (11,499 kg) and incorporates bucket-rigging points directly on the lifting frame. The Terex machine’s SP-kinematics combine the advantages of Z kinematics (power at the bucket) with those of P kinematics (precise parallel handling of the bucket and loader equipment over the entire lifting height). Furthermore, lifting and tipping cylinders are fitted with wear resistant end-position damping. To manage challenging job site conditions, the TL310 offers several standard features including versa steering mode (allowing easier operation in applications requiring multiple steering movements) and automatic self-locking differentials on both axles (enhancing traction in difficult ground conditions). The hydraulic center-pivot steering on the TL310 features a rear-axle oscillating function, offering effective, stable and costefficient operation. The frame of the TL310 is designed with a short tail for maneuverability. The cooling system on the TL310 is designed with a wire screen installed in front
of the high-volume cooler to protect from dust and debris. For system cleaning and to remove fine dust and debris, the fan automatically switches to “reverse” to help clean out the system, requiring less maintenance. An added benefit is that the air intake is located in the dust-free zone behind the driver’s cab. The cab of the new Terex TL310 wheel loader incorporates a removable ROPS/FOPS steel frame and provides the
operator rear visibility through large, tinted windows. Ergonomically designed controls help reduce operator fatigue resulting in increased productivity. This cab also features two doors for easy access, an operator’s seat with hydraulic shock absorption and standard air conditioning. All service points are easily accessible, reducing downtime for maintenance. For more information, visit www.terex.com.

Paving
SECTION Caterpillar Releases AP1000E, AP1055E Asphalt Pavers Pages 31-37
Caterpillar Inc. has added the AP1000E and AP1055E asphalt pavers to its paving products machine family. Mobility, visibility and a powerful C7.1 or C6.6 engine with Acert technology are just some of the features of these new asphalt pavers. In markets that require U.S. EPA Tier IV and E.U. Stage IIIB interim standards, the AP1000E and AP1055E will feature a Cat C7.1 engine with Acert technology, while machines that are only required to meet U.S. EPA Tier III or E.U. Stage IIIA emission standards come equipped with the Cat C6.6 engine with Acert technology. Both engines deliver 225 hp (168 kW) of power. The Cat C7.1 engine utilizes the building blocks of Acert technology including the Cat NOx reduction system and Cat clean emissions module in order to comply with Tier IV Interim/Stage IIIB emission standards. This combination yields clean combustion and continues to deliver steady power in all operating conditions with enhanced fuel efficiency, according to the manufacturer. Other features include dual operating stations with the advisor monitoring system (AMS), tilting consoles, Mobil-Trac undercarriage or wheel undercarriage system, high ambient temperature cooling system, 25 or 35 kW generator, and material handling system with independent auger and conveyor controls. A top-mounted cooling system with high ambient temperature capability provides cool intake air in order to maximize fuel efficiency and minimize emissions. Exhaust air exits toward the hopper providing a cool engine compartment and cleaner working environment for the crew. Dual swing-out stations, tilting consoles and low profile design of the cooling system provide good forward visibility that enables the operator to communicate effectively with the truck driver while monitoring mix in the hopper. Extending the stations beyond the machine frame also enables good jointmatching capability and optimal rearward visibility to the auger chamber. The advisor monitoring system located on the left operating station provides an interactive, text-based interface to assist the operator. It is available in multiple languages for today’s diverse paving crews.
The system includes fuel saving features including engine speed control that automatically adjusts engine rpm when the propel lever moves to and from neutral. An ecomode feature also conserves fuel by lowering the engine speed to 1,650 rpm when less demanding operating conditions exist. The display provides project-planning calculators, start-up checklists, engine operating conditions and service code information that also can be easily accessed for quick problem-solving capability. The Mobil-Trac undercarriage on the AP1055E provides enhanced flotation and limits disturbance on soft base materials, ensuring uniform mat thickness. Large oscillating bogies and hydraulic accumulators progressively overcome surface irregularities with minimal tow point movement limiting the effects of mix piles and manholes for a smoother mat. The Mobil-Trac undercarriage can be equipped with one of two belt designs. The tread-bar design provides better traction when grade conditions are soft, while the smooth belt provides more contact surface for good performance when pushing trucks and less base disruption when turning, according to the manufacturer. Whether most of the paving applications take place on hard surfaces or soft base materials, the non-directional radial drive tires of the AP1000E provide a large ground contact area for good flotation, stability and traction. A position sensor located in the left steering cylinder helps maintain consistent travel speeds when making turns by adjusting the drive speed of the propel motors according to the steering angle of the front wheels, leading to better mat quality and less wear on the drive system. The front wheel assist option provides power to the rear bogie wheels for added traction, while the all-wheel drive option provides power to the front and rear bogie wheels, maximizing traction in all conditions. The Cat system is equipped with three propel/steering modes: pave, travel and maneuver. The pave mode enables the automatics for mix delivery, while the travel mode maximizes speed. When operating in maneuver mode, the AP1055E enables the
machine to rotate within its own footprint, while the AP1000E permits an inside turning radius of 1.5 ft. (0.5 m) for mobility in confined areas. Automated controls and well-designed components reduce segregation potential and maximize efficiency for higher mat quality. The system utilizes four individual pumps that enable each conveyor and each auger to deliver the exact amount of mix to the screed. The left and right conveyors in addition to the left and right augers are controlled independently ensuring mix demand is met when increasing or decreasing paving widths. The system can be equipped with a two sonic sensor design or four sonic sensor
design; depending on customer preference. Each of these systems signal the augers and conveyors to run faster or slower when changing paving widths, thus keeping the head of material at the set level. When paving around obstacles the system automatically makes the necessary adjustments for uniform delivery. These machines can be equipped with a 25 or 35 kW hydraulic generator that provides quiet power for the electric screed heat, auxiliary lights and job site tools. The 25 kW generator is sufficient for most applications, however when utilizing large lighting packages, the 35 kW generator and additional auxiliary power panel will deliver the power you need. The 7 kW auxiliary power panel is equipped with six, 120-volt receptacles and one, 240-volt receptacle, for all job site power requirements. Rigid supports, reliable heating systems
and easily adjustable screed plates make Cat screeds a popular choice of high-production contractors. These screeds utilize the electric heating system that provides fast warm-up, simple operation and reliability, according to the manufacturer. The AS2302C vibratory screed features narrow front-mounted extenders. The extenders utilize 9 in. (23 cm) wide screed plates, allowing it to work close to obstacles and reducing the need for handwork when changing paving widths. The AS3301C vibratory screed features rear-mounted extenders with heavy-duty support tubes that stabilize the extenders and provide rigidity for even material flow when paving wide widths. This screed performs well on interstates, airports and other high production applications. The AS4252C screed utilizes vibratory screed plates as well as tamper bars in order to maximize density behind the screed. This screed with double extending support tubes delivers stability and can pave up to 26 ft. 4 in. (8 m). Cat asphalt pavers can be equipped with the Cat grade and slope system. This system is a factory-integrated guidance system that helps remove irregularities from the surface and control mat thickness for increased production, lower operating costs and higher profitability. It is entirely supported by Caterpillar; ensuring the grade control system and paver are setup to optimize performance and meet job site requirements. The optional product link system provides accurate, timely and useful information about the location, utilization and condition of your equipment. The system streamlines diagnostic efforts, maintenance scheduling, and costs by providing communication flow of vital machine data and location information between the dealer and customer.

Vögele Super Wheeled Paver 1303-2 Makes Its Debut The Super 1303-2 wheeled paver from Vögele America Inc. made its first North American appearance at Conexpo-Con/AGG 2011 in Las Vegas. Just like its similarly sized tracked Super 1300-2 paver, the wheeled Super 1303-2 is a highly versatile paver of the compact equipment class which, due to their small sizes, can handle a wide range of the most varied paving tasks, including combined footpaths and bike paths, residential streets, and parking lot applications, but with the mobility advantage that rubber-tired propulsion enjoys over tracked machines, according to the manufacturer. The powerhouse is driven by a modern Deutz engine rated 100 hp (74.5kW) @ 2,000 rpm. By achieving a maximum laydown rate of 390 tons (354 t) per hour, the Super 13032 is a high-performance machine when it comes to tackling major paving jobs. The paver combines with an AB 340 extending screed in its V version. Like all machines in Vögele’s dash 2 generation, the ErgoPlus control system lends
this in conjunction with a length of just 6 ft. As a result, it can be driven nearly anywhere and fit through almost any gap. Yet it can still pave up to a width of nearly 15 ft. (4.6 m), with a small outside turning radius of 15.7 ft. (4.8 m). To save fuel, its ECO Mode (86 hp at 1,800 rpm [64 kW]) is sufficient for most paving applications. The engine’s noise emission is further decreased when working in ECO Mode. In addition, ECO Mode reduces fuel consumption and wear. Its powerful three-phase A.C. generator is managed to control generator output in compliance with the pave width. Heating the screed to operating temperature takes just a short time. The large cooler assembly provides for optimum cooling, even when operating at full load, thus increasing the service life of the paver systems, according to the manufacturer. For hydraulic functions, powerful separate drives are installed operating in closed circuits. This solution allows engine output to be transformed into hydraulic paver performance.
The wheeled Super 1303-2 can handle a wide range of the most varied paving tasks, including combined footpaths and bike paths, residential streets, and parking lot applications.
greater safety to the job site, and higher quality to the paved product. With ErgoPlus, handling the paver is simple and intuitive, according to the manufacturer.
No component on the Super 1303-2 protrudes beyond its slim silhouette. With the hopper sides folded up, its basic transport width comes to no more than 6 ft. (1.8 m),

The winter training season at Roadtec took place in the brand new training facility completed just in time for the first customer schools in January 2011. The 11,500 sq. ft. (1,070 sq m) facility houses an auditorium large enough for 100 people. It has been designed so that actual Roadtec product can be driven onto the stage. The new addition to the Roadtec facilty
also includes a dining facility, a fully outfitted kitchen and separate classrooms for specific courses. Roadtec holds customer trainings each winter. These courses regularly sell out and existing space simply could no longer accommodate demand. With the new facility Roadtec hopes to serve its customers’ inhouse training needs for some time to come.

Sany America to Team With Sany Electric for Calif.’s Wind Power Expo Sany America is teaming with Sany Electric at the Wind Power Expo in Anaheim, Calif., on May 22 to 25. Sany’s booth (number 2167) is one of the largest at the show and will have both wind turbine equipment on display as well as information on the newest Sany Crawler Crane products designed specifically for the wind power industry. Sany Electric offers a 2mW and 3mW wind turbine plus tideland construction and offshore wind turbine installation equipment, in addition to the grid wind-PV-battery complement hybrid power generation system. The 2mW wind turbine will be on display at the show as well as a model of a turbine. Sany America recently has added to its crawler crane lineup serving the Sany Electric offers a 2mW and 3mW wind turbine plus wind power industry. In addition to the tideland construction and offshore wind turbine instal- SCC3000WE and the SCC6500WE lation equipment, in addition to the grid wind-PV-bat- crawler crane, the SCC8300 was tery complement hybrid power generation system. unveiled at Con-Expo with its new
wind energy fixed jib attachment. The SCC3000WE was the first wind energy crane in Sany’s fleet. It features a Cummins QSM11 engine with a maximum horsepower rating of 400 hp. (298 kW). The main and auxiliary winches use 1 in. (2.5 cm) wire rope and have a maximum line pull of 30,800 lbs. (13,971 kg). The main boom is 282 ft. (86 m) long and when combined with the 23 ft. (7 m) fixed jib extension used for wind mill erection can reach to 312 ft. (95 m) tip height. Even at this height, the SCC3000WE can lift more than 80 tons (72.5 t) at 45 ft. (13.7 m) radius. The SCC6500WE was designed for the bigger, taller towers and can reach with its 335 ft. (102 m) main boom and 40 ft. (12 m) jib 400 ft. (122 m) tip height. At this height with its jib at 0 degrees offset the crane can lift more than 120 tons (109 t); at 20 degrees offset, it still lifts 94 tons (85 t). This crane
features a 440 hp (328 kW) Deutz engine, 1.1 in. (2.8 cm) wire rope and 36,000 lb. (16,329 kg) line pull. For maximum flexibility, though, the SCC8300 offers six other boom configurations in addition to its 59 ft. (18 m) wind energy jib. This crane can do the work on the windmill farm, then be transported easily to other jobs. Its width is less than 10 ft. (3 m) and its main body breaks down to less than 100,000 lbs. (45,359 kg). The crane’s maximum tip height is more than 515 ft. (157 m). It comes with a 400 hp (298 kW) Cummins QSM11 engine, 1.1 in. (2.8 cm) wire rope and 33,000 lb. (14,968 kg) line pull. With its roomy, Porsche designed Ultracab, the SCC8300 was designed for operator comfort and maximum visibility to aid the operator in high lift, high capacity situations found on a wind energy farm, according to the manufacturer. Strong 1Q Increases Hopes New-Home Construction Rises PROFITS from page 14
struction, mining and logging. Its first-quarter profit reflects an industrial sector that is growing again, with most of its sales growth coming from the sale of big machines. When the recession hit in 2007, construction and mining companies cut back their spending on heavy machinery first, Mike DeWalt, Caterpillar’s director of investors told analysts April 29. For more than two years, companies held back their investment. But now they appear to have no choice but to replace aging machinery, boosting Caterpillar’s sales, DeWalt said. That means spending will likely continue as companies replace more vehicles and even expand on growing demand. “Let’s be clear: This is not some kind of bubble,” DeWalt said. “We believe [companies are] essentially buying enough to keep their fleets from continuing to degrade.” The Peoria, Ill., based company said its net income climbed to a record $1.23 billion, or $1.84 per share, for the quarter ended March 31. That’s up from $233 million, or 36 cents per share, a year ago. Revenue rose 57 percent to $12.95 billion from $8.24 billion a year ago. Analysts had expected earnings of $1.30 a share on revenue of $11.43 billion. Revenue at Caterpillar’s machinery and power systems division surged to $12.29 bil-
lion from $7.55 billion during the same period last year. Based on its higher-than-expected sales, Caterpillar boosted its 2011 outlook, forecasting revenue between $52 to $54 billion and net income between $6.25 and $6.75 per share. It previously forecast revenue above $50 billion and net income of roughly $6 per share. The company said its projection does not include its recent acquisitions of MWM Holding GmbH or Bucyrus International Inc. because the deals haven’t closed yet. Caterpillar said its outlook would have been higher if not for the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, which damaged many of its suppliers. Supply disruptions and delays will likely cost the company $300 million on lost sales and $100 million in lost profit. Still, the underlying economics look good for future profit increases at Caterpillar, said Bill Selesky, an analyst with Argus Research. As global demand increases, mining, construction and timber companies should all need to buy more equipment. “You have a big, multinational company with a global footprint all around the world seeing greater demand,” Selesky said. “That gives me hope that we’re dealing with a growing economic recovery that hopefully is sustainable and that will get better as time goes by.”
CONSTRUCTION from page 1
forced home prices down. In some cities, prices are half of what they were before the housing market collapsed in 2006 and 2007. And more foreclosures are expected this year. Tight credit has made mortgage loans tough to get. Many would-be buyers who could qualify for loans are reluctant to shop, fearing that prices will fall even further. A sign of the battered industry is the number of new homes finished and ready to sell dropped in March to a seasonally adjusted 509,000 units, the lowest level on record dating back to 1968. And the number of homes now under construction has fallen to a fourdecade low. “Housing starts remain at an extraordinarily depressed level,” said Dan Greenhaus, chief economic strategist at Miller Tabak + Co. “To put this in further perspective, a doubling of [new homes] from here would still put starts at the lowest level of any other recession.” Single-family homes, which make up roughly 80 percent of home construction, rose 7.7 percent in March. Apartment and condominium construction rose 14.7 percent. Building permits increased to its highest level since December, spurred by a more than 28 percent jump in permits granted for apartment and condo buildings.
That increase in permits could signal a turnaround in the coming months, said Steven A. Wood, chief economist with Insight Economics. New homes typically take six months to build and the number of new permits is higher than the number of homes starting construction. The increase in home construction activity was felt in most regions of the country. It rose 32.3 percent in the Midwest, 27.6 percent in the West and 5.4 percent in the Northeast. Construction fell 3.3 percent in the South. New homes can spur job growth. Each new home built creates the equivalent of three jobs for a year and generates about $90,000 in taxes, according to the National Association of Home Builders. The trade group said April 18 that its index of industry sentiment for April fell one notch, to 16. That followed a one-point increase in March and four straight months of 16 readings. Any reading below 50 indicates negative sentiment about the housing market’s future and the index hasn’t been above that level since April 2006. Most economists expect home prices — and by extension home sales and construction — to slip even further in 2011 before a modest recovery takes hold.

Richardo Lopez (R) and his son, Raul, of Fresno, Calif., claimed the winning bid on a 210LE 4 x 4 skip loader and are ready to use it in their landscaping business.
Sales Stay Strong for Bar None Auction in Sacramento AUCTION from page 39
The new center consolidates the Modesto, Calif., refurbishment center and the Sacramento, Calif., service center.
Robert Lincoln of Carson City, Nev., has been coming to the Bar None auctions since the company’s beginnings in Diamond Springs, Calif., and is happy to pick up a 2004 John Deere 410G 4x4 loader backhoe this time.
Tim Jackson of Ross Equipment, Cottonwood, Calif., is happy his stepson brought him to the sale as he walked away with a 2005 Case 570MXT 4x4 skip loader.
Bobby Bouck of 3B equipment, Elk Grove, Calif., was the winner of a 1995 Cat 322L excavator and can’t wait to put it to work.
Terex Aerial Work Platforms (AWP), a business segment of Terex Corporation (TEX), opened a new Terex service center in Stockton, Calif. The new center consolidates the Modesto, Calif., refurbishment center and the Sacramento, Calif., service center to create a new, high-capacity facility offering the latest customer service processes and technology. The new facility will service all makes and models of aerial, utility and construction equipment for western region customers. The 90,000-sq.-ft. facility is a full service location providing refurbishment and reconditioning of aerial equipment, installation and transfers of utility equipment and full repair services for construction equipment. The center offers advanced capabilities including a large paint booth, a small paint booth and a sponge blast booth. The large capacity of the new center provides customers with more services in a single location, decreasing equipment downtime and getting customers back in the field as quickly as possible. “The new facility provides improved access to maintenance, refurbishment and warranty services for our customers across the western region,” said Siva Balakrishnan, vice president and general manager of
Global Services, Terex AWP. “The new center combines the strengths of the previous locations with the latest advancements in customer services. This is part of our continued focus on providing value added solutions with the usage of the latest manufacturing processes and techniques.” There are 16 Terex service centers and more than 200 field and service technicians located throughout the United States equipped to provide maintenance repair and reconditioning services for various makes and models of aerials, cranes, telehandlers, utility equipment, winches, service bodies and portable lighting. Additional offerings include frequent and annual inspection services; maintenance contracts; warranty and service bulletin work; damage and routine repairs; and insurance estimates. Terex service centers are located in: Seattle, and Spokane, Wash.; Fontana, and Stockton, Calif.; Phoenix, Ariz.; Denver, Colo.; San Antonio, Waco, and Fort Worth, Texas; Portland, Ore.; Nashville, Tenn.; Birmingham, Ala.; North Little Rock, Ark.; Richmond, Va.; Fort Wayne, Ind.; and Charlotte, N.C. ISSA Names Pierre Peltier as Its 2011-2012 President
End users of the HP750 compressor can now choose a three-phase electric motor instead of a diesel engine.
New Electric-Driven Portable Air Compressor Introduced The International Slurry Surfacing Association (ISSA) has named Pierre Peltier as its 2011-2012 president.
The International Slurry Surfacing Association (ISSA) has named Pierre Peltier, general manager of marketing and business development at Terry Asphalt Materials Inc., as its 2011-2012 president. Peltier will focus on educating government officials about the value of pavement preservation and lobby to have a government funding stream put in place for it. He will use ISSA’s “Preserving Roads: Smart Now & Tomorrow” outreach program to show how pavement preservation extends the life of roads, saves money and is environmentally sustainable. Peltier will represent ISSA at several industry events, including ConExpoCon/AGG 2011 in March and the American Public Works Association’s 2011 International Public Works Congress and Exposition in September. He also plans to establish the chip sealing and crack treating processes as sound practices by helping ISSA’s Chip Sealing and Crack Treatments committees finalize work on creating guidelines that explain each process and its application. “ISSA’s current board of directors has a passion for further developing the pavement preservation industry,” said Peltier. “Education is key. We must educate government agencies about the money saving and
environmentally friendly benefits of pavement preservation so we can maintain our infrastructure, both now and for future generations.” Peltier has more than 30 years of experience in the pavement preservation industry. He started his career in the late 1970s with Ballou Pavement Solutions, one of the first companies to bring micro surfacing to the United States. At Ballou, he started out working on job sites and eventually worked his way into the corporation as the head of the marketing department. He also worked several years for Koch Pavement Solutions providing job site support and training for contractors as well as traveling across the country promoting micro surfacing. In the mid 1990s, Peltier joined the ISSA board of directors as a member of the industrial relations committee. More than 15 years after joining the organization, he will now apply his skills and knowledge of the industry as its newest president. Founded in 1963, the International Slurry Surfacing Association (ISSA) is a nonprofit association dedicated to the interests, education and success of slurry surfacing professionals and corporations around the world. For more information, call 410/267-0023 or visit www.slurry.org.
Doosan has a new electric-driven, 750 cfm portable air compressor, the HP750e. End users of HP750 compressor can now choose an optional clean, quiet, three-phase electric motor instead of a diesel engine. In the electric model, both power and cooling systems are controlled by a liquid cooled, variable frequency drive. The HP750e is 100 percent emissionsfree and ultra-quiet, making it ideal for applications that have grid power available or are already utilizing a portable generator, according to the manufacturer. Because the compressor is electric-powered and creates zero emissions, the HP750e is not subject to the EPA emissions regulations or Transport Canada fuel tank regulations. All major service points on the HP750e are easily accessible, meaning less time spent on maintenance of coolers, filters and fluids. By using the electric powered HP750e, service time and costs are less than would be spent on a traditional diesel powered compressor. The inconvenience of purchasing, storing, and transporting potentially hazardous diesel fuel also has been eliminated. A full-color digital display puts the operator in complete control of the HP750e.
Doosan Portable Power utilizes an easy-touse interface that also can be remotely monitored via a wireless connection and a smart phone, tablet or personal computer. The optional, customizable, full-gauge package features a dual-colored, LED backlighting system that provides enhanced operator visibility under any operating conditions. The HP750e is packaged in the same rugged and reliable enclosure as other Doosan Portable Power air compressors. The heavy-duty tandem-axle running gear on the portable HP750e is built with an extended-life slipper spring system that protects the unit during highway towing. The HP750e also offers a multitude of factory-installed options to customize the compressor to match the needed application. The IQ System aftercooler can be installed along with particulate and coalescing filters. This condensate disposal system allows for clean, drip-free moisture control. Optional dual-pressure regulation also is available with rated operating pressures of 100/150 psi. If multiple air outlets are required, additions can include up to one 2in. (5 cm) and three 1.25-in. (3 cm) valves. For more information visit doosanportablepower.com.

Gehl Company Adds RS10-55, RS12-42 ARTBA Voices Its Telescopic Handlers to Product Line Support for House Bill on Coal Ash
Gehl Company has added model RS10-55 and model RS12-42 telescopic handlers to its already broad RS Series line-up. The RS10-55 telescopic handler has a rated lift capacity of 10,000 lbs. (4,535 kg) and a maximum lift height of 55 ft. (16.8 m). The RS12-42 boasts a rated lift capacity of 12,000 lbs. (5,443 kg) and a maximum lift height of 42 ft. (12.8 m). The booms of the new models RS1055 and RS12-42 telescopic handlers have a welded box-section design. Maximum operating capacity is achieved with standard outriggers on the RS10-55, and without the use of outriggers on the RS12-42. Outriggers are optional on the RS12-42 for added stability. “With additional lift height and capacity, the new RS10-55 and RS12-42 models provide superior performance in a wide variety of pick-and-place applications,” said Brian Rabe, Gehl product manager of telescopic handlers. “Operators will enjoy the same comfortable operator environment and exceptional value available on existing RS Series telescopic handlers, along with the additional reach and lift capacity. These new models round out the Gehl RS Series line-up, providing our dealers with products with the best performance per dollar in the industry.” The personnel work platform (PWP) safety system is available as an option on both new models. The PWP System allows the use of an ANSI/ITSDF B56.6-compliant personnel work platform, commonly used by framers, roofers and siding contractors. A rear axle stabilizer system improves stability by locking the rear axle in position whenever the boom is raised more than 60 degrees, or if the parking brake is applied or the PWP System is activated. Other design features include a heavyduty frame with reinforced C-channels, internal wet disc brakes for better stopping ability and longer life, and a SAHR (Spring-Applied, Hydraulic-Release) parking brake, which automatically applies the parking brake when the engine is shut off, or manually by pressing a rocker switch. The ROPS/FOPS canopy and cab provides a spacious operator’s environment with pilot-assisted controls that are easy to reach and easy to operate, allowing the operator to perform precise placements and increase productivity.
The American Road & Transportation Builders Association April 14 called for enactment of House legislation that would prohibit the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from classifying recycled coal ash as a “hazardous substance.” H.R. 1391, the “Recycling Coal Combustion Residuals Accessibility Act of 2011,” introduced by Rep. David McKinley (R-W.Va.), would prevent EPA from ending what has been an environmental success story. In a statement submitted to a House Environment & the Economy Subcommittee hearing, ARTBA explained that without coal ash, concrete would become more expensive and less durable — increasing the cost and environmental
In 2008 alone, more than 12.5 million tons of coal ash was use in the production of concrete. ARTBA said EPA’s own data has found that coal ash accounts for between 15 and 30 percent of the cement in concrete. (12.8 m).
“Operators will enjoy the same comfortable operator environment and exceptional value available on existing RS Series telescopic handlers, along with the additional reach and lift capacity.” Brian Rabe Gehl Company
The view from the cab is a full 360 degrees. For applications that require operator protection from the weather, these units can be equipped with the optional glass-enclosed cab with heater/defroster. A suspension seat is another option. And to further increase the productivity of these machines, a transmission de-clutch feature is standard and an additional work light pack-
age is optional. The new RS10-55 and RS12-42 telescopic handlers are powered by a turbocharged diesel engine with 115 hp (86 kW). Both models are equipped with a four-speed power-shift transmission, three steering modes and a quick-attach work tool-mounting system. For more information, call 800/6280491 or visit www.gehl.com.
footprint of vital transportation improvements. ARTBA stressed that rather than being touted as a construction material with a negative connotation, coal ash should be recognized as a valuable commodity. In 2008 alone, more than 12.5 million tons of coal ash was use in the production of concrete. ARTBA said EPA’s own data has found that coal ash accounts for between 15 and 30 percent of the cement in concrete. EPA also has noted using coal ash at such a level results in annual greenhouse gas reductions in concrete production of between 12.5 and 25 tons, and a reduction in oil consumption between 26.8 and 53.6 million barrels. The association statement cited a variety of successful transportation projects, including in Colorado, where the use of coal ash in 2008 reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 19,500 tons; North Carolina, where the use of coal ash is saving $5 to $10 million annually on transportation projects; and Minnesota, where coal ash was used in the concrete for the new I-35 bridge. ARTBA also pointed out that on four prior occasions (1988, 1993, 1999 and 2000), EPA found that coal ash did not warrant regulation as a “hazardous” waste. ARTBA stressed that no new scientific information had been presented since to justify EPA’s reaching a different conclusion now. For more information, visit www.artba.org.
