Point of Conflict Allen Butler Construction Corrects Trouble Spot in Lubbock, Texas Texas’ oil and gas industry supports millions of jobs statewide while its thriving windfarm industry employs tens of thousands of Texans. In fact, it’s been reported that if Texas were a country, it would rank number 5 in the world in total wind energy generation. Then there’s the state’s leading cash crop: cotton, a $5.2 billion industry that represents 40 percent of total cotton production in the United States. These three industries have a huge presence throughout the South Plains and Permian Basin areas in western Texas. So much so that traffic safety and mobility issues along heavily trafficked thoroughfares and at busy intersections are being aggressively addressed by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). One example: the U.S. 87/Farm to Market (FM) 41 intersection, where a 3-year construction project began in October. “Over the past few years, as more folks moved into southern Lubbock County and northern Lynn County, both U.S. 87 and FM 41 have seen an increase in traffic and, unfortunately, a rise in crashes at the intersection,” Steve Sisneros, TxDOT’s Brownfield area engineer, said. “The new bridge, a grade separation structure — always an improvement to any intersection — will eliminate the conflict point between the U.S. 87 mainlane traffic and FM 41 traffic. Also, the slower minor road FM 41 traffic will no longer have to travel across the high-speed U.S. 87 mainlanes, eliminating any stop-and-enter traffic and the related queuing issues.” Allen Butler Construction (ABC) Inc., a mid-sized heavy highway civil construction company in Lubbock founded in 1978 and known for its road and bridge infrastructure construction, is serving as the general contractor. ABC equipment being used for the U.S. 87 bridge project includes milling machines, scrapers, motor graders/maintainers, cranes, drill shafts,

belly-dumps and laydown paving machines. When finished, motorists will benefit from a new bridge that will take them over FM 41 as well as new entrance and exit ramps, turn-arounds and safety lighting, said Sisneros. How the three-phase project is approached has much to do with safety issues, Sisneros said. “The safety of the traveling public and construction crews is always our top priority, so for about eight months during Phase 1 of the project, FM 41 traffic will not have direct access to U.S. 87 and will be detoured see LUBBOCK page 64

The ink is still drying on the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) as the construction industry awaits bid-letting and Congress turns to the reconciliation budget bill. After a long, hard-fought battle for funding, the industry is ready to get to work on these broad-spectrum infrastructure projects, which will color

the national construction picture for years to come. “America finally has a generation-defining infrastructure bill — and if the reconciliation budget comes through, too, America will begin a building spree larger than what happened during the New Deal,” observed Brookings Institution. It’s “worth pausing to consider” the enormity see INFRASTRUCTURE page 46

Attendees look over and learn about the Cat PM825.

Travis McClung (L) of Caterpillar goes over the PM825’s ease of operation with Joe Neilso of B. Jackson Construction in West Jordan, Utah.

Caterpillar Hosts Event to Showcase Its Cold Planer Models

C

aterpillar held an event Dec. 1, 2021, in Clayton, N.C., to showcase its lineup of cold planers.

Before the equipment walk-arounds and demonstrations began, however, retired United States Army Staff Sergeant Travis Mills of the 82nd Airborne delivered a keynote address to all attendees. Mills’s larger-than-life personality, sense of humor and incredible spirit for life engaged the attendees from the moment he took center stage. Mills is a recalibrated warrior, motivational speaker, actor, author and an advocate for veterans and amputees. Mills’s New York Times bestselling memoir, “Tough as They Come,” is currently available on sale in bookstores everywhere. Despite losing portions of both arms and legs from an IED while on active duty in Afghanistan, Mills continues to overcome life’s challenges, breaking physical barriers and defying odds. Mills lives by his motto: “Never give up. Never quit.” After his address, the equipment then took center stage. Five years ago, Cat brought a fresh roster of cold planers to the market and has been continuously working on improvements to the product line ever since. The 2021 product release marks the third update to these models since they were first introduced. For dealers and contractors throughout the United States at the event, Caterpillar discussed its

Caterpillar dealers and contractors from across the United States gathered in Clayton, N.C., to learn about the manufacturer’s line of cold planers.

PM312, PM622 and PM825 cold planer models and provided several demonstrations of the PM825. The PM312 is an efficient, highly maneuverable milling machine with a cutting width of 48.2 in. (1,225 mm) that performs controlled full-depth removal of asphalt and concrete pavements in a single pass. The PM622 is a high-production, half-lane milling machine with a cutting width of 88 in. (2,235 mm) that performs controlled full-depth removal of asphalt and concrete pavements in a single pass. The PM825 is a high-production, half-lane milling machine with a cutting width of 98.6 in. (2,505 mm) that performs controlled full-depth removal of asphalt and concrete pavements in a single pass. The models meet U.S. EPA Tier IV Final, EU Stage V and Korea Tier 4 Final emissions standards and are optimized to reduce fuel burn with a high-capacity cooling system that keeps the engine at ideal temperatures for optimal fuel efficiency and lower emissions. New expanded LED lighting enhances nighttime and low-light operation. The new wide-dispersion LED work lights come standard and provide an improved, well-lit work area for ground crew. LED perimeter lights also can be added to further illuminate the rotor chamber, cutting path and work areas around the machine for increased visibility. According to Cat, the integrated Cat GRADE with Grade and Slope system takes the guesswork out of producing accurate and repeatable cutting results and includes automated features like obstacle jump and programmable cut transitions to aid in milling precision. Cat cold planers also can be enhanced with full 3D milling operation. The cutting system is designed to withstand tough applications and is built to last with heavy steel construction and reinforced alloys to resist abrasion, according to Cat. Available in a wide variety of spacings, the durable Cat System K rotors deliver high-performance with efficient material flow and an excellent cutting pattern. Kicker paddles are reversible for extended life, and the tapered dual retention toolholder design eliminates the need for retaining bolts, pins, or setscrews, reducing replacement time by up to

50. A reliable track undercarriage system with well-engineered track geometry provides high tractive effort and better load distribution when milling deep cuts or through hard materials. High-capacity conveyors provide efficient removal of milled material with outstanding discharge control. The belt also reverses for faster clean-up, while magnetic vinyl covers provide quick access to inspect the rollers for wear. Optional dust ventilation and spray bar systems maximize dust removal. Longer lasting conveyor flashing, improved rotor drive access, corded pendant for the rotor turning device and an added wear shoe for the inboard ski are just a handful of the many improvements included in this product update. Cat milling machines are designed with long maintenance intervals, large service doors, and power hood for walk-in access to critical components and systems. Track pads are easy to replace, while track chains and other undercarriage components are maintenance-free up to 4,000 hours. When time to replace high wear components, Cat dealers provide specialized support with repair kits, convenient parts availability, and service options for both the machine and the engine.  CEG

Doosan Unveils New DD100 Dozer, Much More for 2022 Doosan Infracore North America introduced its new products for 2022 during a media event at its Real Operations Center (ROC) in Arizona the first week of December. The company’s next generation crawler excavators, miniexcavators and new -7 series wheel loaders were featured in presentations by the respective product specialists. Doosan also unveiled its DD100 dozer, which it said will be available through dealers in 2022. Technological upgrades also were introduced, including the “Transparent Bucket.” The transparent bucket is a system that allows the wheel loader operator to see blind spots in front of the bucket through the monitor in the cockpit. The innovative system records images in front of the wheel loader with cameras installed at the top and bottom of the equipment and shows combined images in real time using a curved projection method. The front of the wheel loader has been considered an area prone to major safety issues due to its blind spots. With the transparent bucket function, however, the operator can easily check the blind spot in front of the bucket through the monitor and prevent accidents. Another advantage is that it can significantly improve work efficiency by enabling a forward-view perspective during loading/unloading or when carrying soil and sand, according to the manufacturer. DD100 Dozer Doosan’s 122-hp DD100 dozer delivers powerful pushing performance, fuel efficiency and all-day operator comfort, according to the manufacturer. The DD100 features a dual/single flange-type roller with several track guard options. Designed with operators in mind, the DD100 features the 8-in. Smart Touch display, giving operators complete control from a convenient, easy-to-read touch screen. It also offers enhanced visibility with minimized front pillars, maximum glass area and a standard rearview camera — plus LED lights and front, rear and side wiper blades. The DD100 features a Doosan engine with convenient maintenance access points and does not require the use of a diesel particulate filter to meet current emission standards. Doosan DD100 owners can add the 3D Machine Guidance

Volvo Prototype LX03: Intelligent Future of Construction The LX03, a fully autonomous, battery-electric prototype by Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) is the first real-world example of a self-learning concept wheel loader with the brains to make decisions, perform tasks and interact with humans. It also is the first time ever a LEGO Technic model has been turned into a real machine. While not commercially available, engineers expect that valuable insights from the LX03 will feed into applications for today and tomorrow. Inspired by a concept devised by Volvo CE and LEGO Technic engineers and designers, the Volvo LX03 is a remarkable milestone breaking new grounds in smart construction technology. It represents both the next stage in Volvo CE’s exploration into machine intelligence and its determination to decarbonize the construction industry. Melker Jernberg, president of Volvo CE, said, “We need to transform the construction industry with

smart and more sustainable solutions that will have an impact on a global scale. The unveiling of the LX03 prototype today represents just that — and is testament to the incredible expertise of our engineers and our united commitment towards positive change. Together with the LEGO Group, we are pushing the boundaries of both technology and imagination and the result is beyond anything the world has seen before.” Lars Stenqvist, chief technology officer of Volvo Group, said, “As transport and infrastructure leaders, we have a vital role to play in taking action on climate change and stepping up the pace of innovation needed to deliver on emissions targets. We believe in working with driven and creative partners who, like us, are focused on making innovation real and moving beyond just words.” Pioneering Partnership What started out as an exciting project between designers and engineers at the two companies, to

explore the potential for future construction, evolved over time with the help of a team of smart children into the successful launch of the 42081 LEGO Technic Concept Wheel Loader ZEUX. The LEGO Group’s Head of Product for LEGO Technic, Niels Henrik Horsted said, “Our two companies have enjoyed an extremely successful partnership

over the years in which we have collaborated on several LEGO Technic models. But this is the first time we are making a real machine based on a model and not the other way around — and that is what makes this a truly unique project.” Collaborative Machines The prototype LX03 has been built by a dedicated team of engi-

neers, programmers and workshop technicians from Volvo CE sites in Eskilstuna, Sweden and Konz, Germany, in collaboration with the design team in Gothenburg, Sweden. It is a 5-ton wheel loader that has been developed as a modular concept, with the capability of being made larger or smaller with just one or two changes to the manufacturing process. It also shares its driveline with the L25 Electric, making it a zero emission, lownoise machine with a runtime of up to eight hours depending on its application. It is designed to be a smart and safe worker, equipped with a brain that has the capacity to adapt to different scenarios, make decisions in real-time and most importantly collaborate with humans. It can be programmed by customers to complete heavy, repetitive or dangerous tasks, reducing the need for a human on site. Contractor Discusses What Qualities Weeks-Long John Make for Highly Successful Dredge Deere Strike Ends After New Pact The new agreement will boost hourly wages by 10 percent and increase retirement benefits. When Gerke Excavating needed a highly powered customized cutter head dredge, it turned to DSC Dredge.

Dredging…what is it? Dredging, by definition, is the process of removing the sediment from a water body (reservoir or channel), transporting, and depositing it at another location far away. For some, dredging is undertaken for a variety of reasons, including mining, navigation, environmental remediation, flood control and the emplacement of structures (e.g., foundations, pipelines and tunnels). The question now is what makes a company or service a success story when it comes to dredging — is it only the equipment, or does it extend further? According to Taylor Hancock, quarry organizations supervisor of Gerke Excavating Inc., “It’s the ability to provide quality service while building long standing relations,” goals that her family’s company has stood on since 1946. Gerke Excavating, located in Tomah, Wis., offers services that include not only excavating, site grading and trucking, but also crushing and decades of experience in various mining techniques. So, after much industry research, this familyowned business made the decision to purchase a customized dredge from DSC Dredge. Wayne McGinnis, mining operations supervisor of Gerke Excavating Inc. said, “After speaking with Charles Johnson, DSC’s director of domestic dredge sales, I knew immediately that DSC was the right choice. “Throughout the entire process I never felt like I was a bother, or asking too many questions. He was always accessible, and his response time was exactly the way we would operate with our clients — it felt like home.” DSC Dredge is a family-owned dredge manufacturing company based in Reserve, La., whose customized technology and dredging solutions lead the industry throughout 50 different countries, according to the company. While Gerke was no stranger to dredges, it was made clear that the current dredge they were utilizing just wasn’t cutting it. The materials they were attempting to liberate were too hard and required a highly powered customized cutter head dredge. Specifically, a Custom 10300 Series Electric Marlin Dredge with Digging Jet, which includes DSC’s highly innovative, user-friendly bottom visualization system, DSC VISION. According to McGinnis, “DSC Vision has been a phenomenal system, it is very helpful for the operators and has

exceeded all expectations. The software is incomparable to anything else we have ever utilized. “The entire process, from delivery to set up and support has been phenomenal,” said McGinnis, noting that from the beginning his team was made to feel like family, not just another customer. “To know I can pick up the phone and call Bill [DSC’s coowner, EVP of product development and CTO[ and get immediate feedback is a great feeling.” Hancock echoed similar sentiments. “Throughout my own family, across all generations, starting with my great grandpa Allan who started the company and then through my dad, it was always taught, ‘you have to take care of your customers and community’ and this is the feeling I get every time we interact with DSC. The feeling of continuous support; that we have nothing to worry about.” She recalled how much it meant to everyone when Bill Wetta came out to their site to just “check in” on their jobs. That personal touch demonstrated that DSC cared not just about the delivered dredge and its performance, but also about the Gerke team and their own success, she said. “To know there are other companies out there that value their clients the way we do means a lot. It showed us everyone has boots on the ground and are ready to interact. The experience of the two teams working together — DSC’s product support guys and our dredge operators, was so positive that it was honestly one of the best experiences we’ve had.” Gerke Excavating has a strong foundation with well over three decades of experience mining limestone and over a decade with frac sand. While they have been dredging for six years, future expansion is already being discussed. “DSC values our partnership with the Gerke family. As they have shared, our business models are very similar, and our values are aligned which made this a win-win relationship all around. We are excited to be a part Gerke’s continued growth in the dredging industry,” said William J. Wetta, DSC Dredge. DSC Dredge operates from three manufacturing facilities located in Reserve, La., Poplarville, Miss., and Greenbush, Mich. For more information, visit www.dscdredge.com. 

A five-week-long strike at John Deere ended Nov. 17 as United Auto Workers (UAW) members approved a new sixyear contract with the agricultural and construction equipment manufacturer. The new agreement will boost hourly wages by 10 percent and increase retirement benefits. In addition, the company will maintain its health insurance program, in which workers do not pay premiums, the Register reported. The pact was approved by approximately 61 percent of UAW voters. The 10,100 John Deere workers in Iowa, Illinois and Kansas had rejected two previous contracts, setting off the first strike against the company since 1986. “UAW John Deere members did not just unite themselves,” Ray Curry, president of UAW International, said in a statement. “They seemed to unite the nation in a struggle for fairness in the workplace. We could not be more proud.” In his own statement, Deere CEO John May said, “I’m pleased our highly skilled employees are back to work building and supporting the industry-leading products which make our customers more profitable and sustainable.” Deal Reached On Third Contract Proposal The contract approved Nov. 17 was much the same as an agreement that 55 percent of members voted down Nov. 2. After that vote, company officials said they would not offer any further wage or benefit increases. The strike began as Deere celebrated the prospect of record profits, with executives projecting in August that the company would earn $5.7 billion-$5.9 billion for the fiscal year that ended Nov. 1 — a 62 percent bump over 2013 earnings, the company’s previous record year. In the first contract introduced in early October, Deere offered up to 6 percent pay increases and re-introduced quarterly cost-of-living adjustments, a feature of previous Deere-UAW contracts that the company eliminated in 2015. The equipment maker also offered workers $3,500 bonuses if they ratified the contract. Additionally, the company proposed a boost to the pension program that would have given a 25-year employee about $100 extra each month in retirement and offered lumpsum payments of $20,000 to $50,000 for workers when they retire, depending on their length of service. At the same time, Deere proposed to eliminate the pension program for workers hired after Nov. 1. 

Fisher Sand and Gravel Begins $52M Ariz. Bridge Project BULLHEAD CITY, Ariz. (AP) Siteclearing work has begun for a $52.4 million bridge construction project to provide a long-awaited second road crossing over the Colorado River between Bullhead City, Ariz., and Laughlin, Nev. Actual construction is expected to begin by the end of the year and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2023. Fisher Sand and Gravel, of Tempe, Ariz., is the primary contractor for building the four-lane bridge that will span 724 ft. (221 m) and include a path for pedestrians and bicyclists. “Bottom line, the new bridge project is underway after many, many years of dialogue and debate,” said Bullhead City Manager Toby Cotter. “It's going to happen. It’s starting to happen now.” The project is a partnership between Bullhead City and Clark County, which includes Laughlin, an unincorporated casino and resort community. The two communities across the river from each other share a local economy, with many Bullhead City residents working in

Laughlin. “The need for a second bridge connecting Laughlin and Bullhead City has been discussed and planned for decades, with federal funding first committed in the 1990s,” said Clark County Commission Michael Naft, whose district includes Laughlin. “This bridge is an important transportation element and it is also critical for emergency responders.” The bridge will link the Bullhead Parkway in southern Bullhead City to Needles Highway in Laughlin, the Mohave Valley Daily News reported. The existing Laughlin Bridge, paid for by Laughlin founder Don Laughlin in 1987 and deeded to the states of Nevada and Arizona, has served since 2001 as the only span crossing the river within the Bullhead City limits. The new bridge will be about 8 mi. (13 km) south of the Laughlin Bridge and about 6 mi. (9.6 km) north of the Veteran’s Memorial Bridge linking Fort Mohave to Laughlin near the Avi Resort Casino. The next-closest bridge is at Needles. Before the Laughlin Bridge was built, the

bridge at Davis Dam was the only link between Bullhead City and Laughlin. That bridge was closed to public access following the 2001 terrorist attacks against New York and Washington, D.C. Work recently started with clearing brush

and other debris from the project area, constructing a pond near the Colorado River Nature Center on the Arizona side and staging equipment near the work site. Clark County is contributing $27.1 million, the federal government is providing $20.8 million and Bullhead City will pay

$4.5 million. The bridge has long been in the planning process, with then-U.S.-Sens. John McCain of Arizona and Harry Reid of Nevada pledging support well before the turn of the century and Bullhead City and Nevada officials working with the Federal Highway Administration to identify an appropriate site. The original favored site was discarded in 2008 because construction would have infringed on a public park, precluding federal funding. It then took Bullhead City several years to come up with its current preferred site. But Laughlin officials didn’t like the site, and said it was too far south of Laughlin's business and casino districts and that the location would require construction of a new roadway to connect the bridge to Needles Highway. At one point, the Laughlin Town Advisory Board asked if there were other projects of greater benefit to Laughlin that could benefit from county money earmarked for the bridge. 

David A. Mehrtens

David A. Mehrtens, 61, of Lenexa, Kan., passed away Dec. 3, 2021. He worked in the construction equipment industry for more than 40 years, most recently serving KirbySmith Machinery as its director of remarketing and used equipment.  Message from Ed Kirby, John Arapidis The entire Kirby-Smith family is still in mourning over the news last Friday regarding the passing of our dear friend and colleague David Mehrtens. Chairman of the Board Ed Kirby and President John Arapidis have prepared the following statement: As we mourn the loss of David Mehrtens, our sincerest condolences go out to his wife Robyn, his daughters, and the entire Mehrtens family in this difficult time. David had no trouble integrating himself into the Kirby-Smith family when he left Kansas for Oklahoma City to become our Director of Remarketing and Used Equipment in 2017. Indeed, he endeared himself to everyone he encountered and exemplified the best of our principles in his selflessness, honesty, loyalty, and friendship. David loved to teach others and had the gift

of making learning fun. He invested so much time into so many of us, and in doing so has established a strong foundation that will continue to shape Kirby-Smith Machinery long after his passing. As a professional, the impact David made on this company was both sizable and immediate. His wealth of experience at pricing and trades, along with a penchant for always finding the right equipment for customers, allowed him to gain the trust of our salesforce overnight. One of the most respected used equipment managers in the entire industry with a network of contacts second to none, David’s presence helped elevate our used equipment business to new heights. He was a great teammate who was passionate about selling equipment and helping others, and he continued to serve as a valuable resource and mentor into his final days. In closing, we reflect on how much David loved being a part of Kirby-Smith Machinery, and how much this company loved him for being here. Though we have all lost a good friend, we are incredibly fortunate to have had someone with the character and integrity of David Mehrtens in our lives, and he will be deeply missed. 

Soil Connect — a digital marketplace connecting those who have soil, aggregates and other building materials with those who need it — has added time tracking to its growing e-ticketing platform, eTickets. The new time tracking feature has been seamlessly integrated into the Soil Connect eTickets platform and allows users to easily reduce timesheet errors and make accurate and timely payments to haulers. An automatically geo-tagged punch-in and punch-out function enables users to analyze route efficiencies and provides a clear picture of the route, along with the complete data set provided by the platform. “We are always looking for ways to solve the many age-old day-to-day problems encountered by contractors in the material hauling and dirt moving world,” said Cliff Fetner, founder and CEO of Soil Connect. “eTickets was designed with the small- to

mid-size contractor in mind, and this new feature provides business owners a time tracking solution that can improve driver and subhauler accountability, without being constantly mired in additional administrative duties, invoice disputes, etc. This can make a real impact on a company’s bottom line.” eTickets is a contactless, easy-to-use e-ticketing platform designed to eliminate the use of paper tickets and allow users to easily capture customer information, type of truck, destination, pictures, eSignatures, type of material, load count and more. eTickets provides a better ticket management solution for any industry that hauls and manages loads, eliminating the human error associated with traditional paper tickets and ultimately helping contractors get paid faster. LHC Reaches Compaction in Fewer Passes, Lower Cost For more than 50 years, LHC Inc. has provided construction services to Montana’s Flathead Valley. It has completed and is currently working on some of the Treasure State’s largest, most complex and high-profile projects, including the construction of a nearly $34 million bypass around its home city of Kalispell. LHC’s services include design, engineering and construction of all types of infrastructure undertakings, as well as site work for commercial and other properties. It selfperforms nearly every aspect of a project, including mass earthwork, utility installation, subgrade prep and asphalt paving. LHC supplies the materials for the latter from three strategically located gravel pits around the Flathead Valley. LHC recently added its first two Dynapac CC6200 VI rollers to its asphalt paving operations. With an operating mass of 27,340 lbs. and 84-in. drum width, the CC6200 VI is the largest in Dynapac’s tandem rollers lineup. Operators Dustin Yeadon and Stanley Appelt said the machines have increased productivity and efficiency. “We call them the Swiss Army knives of compaction because they actually work great in all three paving stages: breakdown, intermediate and finish,” said Appelt. “Typically, we just use them for the latter two because you can do both virtually simultaneously with a CC6200 VI. You can do more in one pass than with competitive machines.” Yeadon added, “The ability to get the job done with fewer passes gives us time, labor and fuel savings. We basically can run all day on less than half a tank. And, if we can handle two stages with one machine, that eliminates the need for additional rollers, which increases the savings.” Adjustable Vibration Frequency, User-Friendly Operation Dynapac designed its CC asphalt tandem rollers for high vibration frequency with low amplitude in order to maintain high efficiency on modern, thin asphalt layers. This allows them to compact quickly without crushing the aggregate material. They also can be used for thick layers with high ampli-

lead roller behind the paver, it takes a good, long time for the water to run out. We typically put down 400 to 500 tons between fill ups.”

LHC recently added its first two Dynapac CC6200 VI rollers to its asphalt paving operations. With an operating mass of 27,340 lbs. and 84-in. drum width, the CC6200 VI is the largest in Dynapac’s tandem rollers lineup.

tude and a “normal” vibration frequency. A wide frequency and amplitude range provides optimization in any application. “Being able to adjust the vibration frequency increases versatility,” said Appelt. “We used the CC6200s on everything from smaller parking lots to large-scale highway projects. You can set your numbers to what you need, and it will tell you the range of where you need to be speed-wise for optimized production. That helps with efficiency.” Vibration frequency is set through the new instrument panel and controls that were designed with simplicity in mind. A bigger touch screen ensures maximum visibility. The latest technology simplifies roller operation and ensures optimized handling, thus increasing the quality of the compaction job. “It’s very user-friendly with a dynamic screen that gives you instant feedback with information such as where you’re at in terms of impacts per foot,” said Appelt. “You can input your numbers pre-workday, so you can get right to work when it’s time. If you do need to make a quick adjustment, it’s two or three buttons and you’re back to rolling.”

The swiveling operator’s module in the CC6200 VI allows a 180-degree turn of the seat, instruments and levers. It also can slide from side to side, making it possible for the operator to see drum surfaces, sprinkler nozzles and drum edges. “Sliding and turning is all done with one handle, as opposed to numerous ones like other rollers I have run,” said Yeadon. “You can instantly slide over and get on point. It’s effortless and speeds up operation.” Appelt added, “The visibility is outstanding with the open-cab design. There are no bars in the middle of the cab that you have to look or lean around to see as you go forward. The seat sits up higher than others, so you can see right down in front of you.” Yeadon and Appelt can set how often water from the high-capacity water tank is sprayed on the drums with the control panel and a joystick button. The tank can be filled from both sides of the roller, and there is a two-bar setup on both drums. “If you want water on demand, just push the button; otherwise, you can adjust how often it sprays to match the job,” Yeadon pointed out. “In most cases, even if it’s the

Expanded Partnership That Helps More Contractors LHC Inc. purchased the Dynapac CC6200 VI rollers from Modern Machinery with the assistance of Territory Manager Ben Ralls. Modern has a long history with Dynapac in Montana and Idaho, and earlier this year, it added Wyoming, Washington and Oregon to its territory — making it one of North America’s largest Dynapac dealers. “Modern is well-respected in the market and a perfect fit for Dynapac,” said Dynapac North America Vice President of Sales Jamie Roush when the expansion was announced. “This partnership will enable us to strengthen our brand presence and customer support even further in this region.” Ralls and Modern set up a demo with one CC6200 VI so LHC could put it to the test on a highway paving project. Dynapac representatives, including Western Region Manager Steve Cole, were on hand to answer questions and provide training and support. “They gave us a walk-around and showed us every aspect, which gave us a leg up before we started,” said LHC Inc. Superintendent Cruz Smith. “That was a huge help, and they have followed up since we purchased the machines to make sure everything continues to run smoothly. We are looking forward to doing more business with them after purchasing these rollers and seeing how they increase our productivity.” Ralls emphasized that others could see similar results. “I have seen these and other Dynapac rollers get compaction where other brands would struggle. Having equipment like Dynapac, that’s backed by great manufacturer service and support, plays a strategic role in Modern Machinery’s ability to build trust with customers. Both companies are excited about the partnership expansion, as it gives us the ability to help other customers like LHC be more productive, efficient and profitable.” For more information, visit www.dynapac.us. 

NAPA ‘Pave It Black’ Podcast Highlights Tech Innovations By Tom Gresham NAPA

New technologies are reshaping the asphalt pavement industry, and the pace of change is accelerating as high-tech tools grow both more sophisticated and accessible. During Season 3 of “Pave It Black,” NAPA’s podcast covering the people and issues affecting the industry, hosts Richard Willis and Brett Williams interviewed industry experts to dig deeper into the innovations that are most affecting the realm of asphalt pavement — and that promise to change the way the industry operates long into the future. Episode 1: “What Is Innovation?” In Episode 1, Nicholas Webb, founder and CEO of LeaderLogic and the keynote speaker at the 2020 NAPA Annual Meeting, detailed his thoughts on the concept of innovation and how it promises to impact the asphalt pavement industry. Episode 2: “It’s Electric” Dan Gallagher, president of Gallagher Asphalt, discussed the growing electrification of vehicles and how that affects the asphalt industry — an industry funded in part by gas taxes through the Highway Trust Fund. Episode 3: “Innovation = Business Opportunities” Katie Peabody, senior business analyst with Lakeside Industries, joined “Pave It Black” to discuss the far-reaching impact of new developments in computing technology. “Everything is definitely evolving,” she said. “As an organization, we realize the importance of these technologies in order to continue to thrive in the industry, even though it isn’t always easy to adopt and utilize technology.” Episode 4: “Big Data in the Asphalt Industry” Dan Ridolfi, president of California-based LASTRADA Partners, dove into how data analytics and artificial intelligence can help operators “focus on what matters.” Ridolfi explained, “What we have the ability to do today is expand the databases, and that’s kind of what’s exciting about our world.” Episode 5: “Temperature, Temperature, Temperature” Brent Carron, president of Valley Paving in Minnesota, explained the benefits of thermal profiling, a tool not widely used in the industry, but one that offers an opportunity for contractors to ensure high-quality asphalt pavements. Episode 6: “Going Paperless”

Hosts Brett Williams (in foreground) and Richard Willis discuss technology issues on NAPA’s “Pave It Black” podcast.

Dan Ganoe, vice president of operations for Lindy Paving in Pennsylvania, discussed the implementation of e-ticketing and how to move to a paperless world. Episode 7: “Robots Help in the Work Zone” During National Work Zone Awareness Week, Todd Hendricks, Jr., president of Ohio-based Pioneer Industrial Systems, shared that his company is pursuing two robotics solutions for road maintenance projects: sealing cracks on roads and setting and picking up cones in work zones. Episode 8: “Efficient Fleet Management” Mike Wills, area manager for Californiabased Granite Construction, said technology is allowing for much more efficient deployment of trucks to sites, such as through an app that Granite uses with drivers. Episode 9: “The Dynamics of Asphalt Plant Management” Ben Adomyetz, sales representative and estimator for the Rogers Group in Alabama, described how software can help asphalt operators plan, track, and communicate, such as during the transition from the bidding process for a project to the project itself. Episode 10: “Doing More with Drones” Carl Pittman, a civil engineer with Apac Mississippi, and Jessica Lewis, a graduate student at Mississippi State, provided their insight into the ways that drones have increased safety and efficiency at project and plant sites. “The real success in a drone program is going to come down to how you use that data,” Pittman said. “You can go collect all the data you want. If it sits in an Excel spreadsheet, and never goes anywhere, you’re not really doing much with it.” (Reprinted with permission from the National Asphalt Pavement Association) 

Flynn Brothers Inc. became an employee-owned company in 2004 and its operations have continued to grow. Major projects include a total pavement replacement on a heavily trafficked stretch of Interstate 65 in Louisville; excavation, clearing and sanitary line installation for the 40-acre Buechel Basin Wastewater Storage Facility; and site work, underground utilities and asphalt paving for the Paddock Shops, one of Louisville’s largest shopping centers. Flynn Brothers currently has three Rock Commander drills in its fleet: a JD1400E-II and two JD800E-II drills.

Jim Slinker, head of Flynn Brothers’ drilling and blasting division, was on site in October to begin the project. Slinker estimates that there are 80,000 yds. of mass rock along with storm sewer, sanitary sewers and water supply line access that requires drilling and blasting. Rock Commander JD800E-II The newest addition to the Rock Commander lineup — the JD800-II — is smaller than the JD-1400E-II but shares a majority of the large machine’s components. The JD-800EII features a large cab design and tilt console and can operate with T45 or T51 drill steel and can handle hole diameters ranging from 2.75 to 4 in. The JD800-II is powered by a Cummins QSB6.7, providing power for operating the hydraulics, compressor and the YH80A drifter. The JD-800E-II is used by construction and development contractors that need to drill a mid-size hole without breaking the bank. With more than a year’s worth of work complete on this project, downtime has been kept to a minimum due to Soosan’s simple to maintain systems. Rock Commander drills are front and center on Flynn Brothers’ latest project, as well as hundreds of other projects currently under way throughout the United States and Canada. Require Innovation The construction industry has burst into a flurry of activity as the most aggressive infrastructure spending initiative since the 1950s was signed into law on Nov. 15. Combined with a skilled labor shortage, the $550 billion bill calls into question whether contractors have the capacity to meet rapidly growing demand. Innovative contractors across the nation are turning to new technology for help. Robots as a new class of equipment are showing to be an effective complement to human crews and may prove essential to completing the projects laid out within the infrastructure bill. Woman owned Disadvantaged Business Enterprise, Shelby Erectors, is an example to contractors across the country on the effective usage of robotics on the job site. Contracted for rebar installation on the 512,427 sq. ft. I-95 Express Phase 3C project in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Shelby elected to utilize TyBot by Advanced Construction Robotics to boost crew productivity. TyBot, a rebar tying robot, leverages cutting edge artificial intelligence to tie together the rebar grid that commonly reinforces concrete surfaces. While TyBot is actively tying rebar, Shelby’s laborers are free to handle more skilled tasks better suited for human hands. Shelby stands tall in the industry as an example of how to adapt to modern challenges, and its president, Jennifer Nix, is positioning her company to meet the labor demands of the new infrastructure bill. “As the labor gap in construction continues to grow with increasing demand, it is crucial to incorporate solutions like TyBot to mitigate the effects. We have found that TyBot saves at least 25 percent on our rebar tying schedule. This provides a crucial edge when bidding projects, and project owners, typically DOT, often like to see innovative tech used,” Nix said. “TyBot is definitely a lifesaver when labor availability is lacking. It provides a level of consistency that’s difficult to match and is why we’re currently using it on three separate concrete bridge construction projects across Florida. “TyBot removes the repetitive, back-breaking work that can cause serious long-term injuries, and anything we can do to improve our crews’ health and safety is a huge priority for us. TyBot allows us to safely stay on schedule while shorthanded and to move our workforce on to higher skilled tasks or to another jobsite where they can be better utilized,” said Nix. “ACR was founded for moments like this. Our robots will continue to solve today’s construction challenges assisting the workforce to meet rapidly growing demand, such as what will generated from the infrastructure bill,” said Searock, cofounder, ACR. Infrastructure Spending May Exceed New Deal Investments INFRASTRUCTURE from page 1

of the total investment if both proposals become law, said the think-tank: The current House reconciliation version proposes roughly $500 billion in new infrastructure spending over 10 years, the organization noted. “Combined with IIJA, the federal government could be spending $160 billion above baseline for the next five years. That would push federal spending above New Deal investments in infrastructure — as measured by federal spending as a percentage of GDP — but likely to fall short of the historic federal peak around the late 1970s.” After non-stop lobbying for a broad infrastructure bill, the construction industry’s reaction to its signing was enthusiastic but cautious. ARTBA dubbed the IIJA “the most significant measure in more than 50 years to meaningfully address the condition and performance of the U.S. transportation network.” Dave Bauer, ARTBA CEO said Congress “demonstrated not only the importance of federal transportation infrastructure leadership, but that policymakers can find common ground and govern on matters of national concern.” Bauer saluted President Joe Biden, House members Nancy Pelosi and Steny Hoyer and Peter DeFazio; Senate members Chuck Schumer, Mitch McConnell, Tom Carper, Shelley Moore Capito, Kyrsten Sinema and Rob Portman for leading the effort, along with other members of Congress who voted for final passage. “Members of Congress have taken tangible action that will benefit every state and community across the nation,” Bauer said. Ward Nye, ARTBA chairman and CEO of Martin Marietta, was present at the White House, standing on behalf of the association and its members. “The bipartisan infrastructure law is a victory for all Americans,” he said. “Let’s get to work delivering transportation project outcomes that will boost the economy and make our roadways and railways safer.” Biden tapped Mitch Landrieu, former New Orleans mayor, to coordinate IIJA implementation. Working with experts, Landrieu will verify that jobs are created, the nation’s global competitiveness is strengthened, supply chains are opened and inflation is stanched. “Our work will require strong partnerships across the government and with state and local leaders, business and labor to create good-paying jobs and rebuild America for the middle class,” Landrieu said. “We will also ensure these major investments achieve the president’s goals of combating climate change and advancing equity,” Landrieu added. The National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) has long supported a bi-partisan federal highway funding program, said Audrey Copeland, association president and CEO. “NAPA and like-minded organizations in the transportation construction industry, along with our engaged member companies and State Asphalt Pavement Association partners, have advocated for adequate and consistent federal highway funding for a very long time,” she said. “Asphalt pavement is already America’s most recycled product, and our industry is embarking on a bold vision toward net-zero carbon emissions,” she added. “We will, as we always have, do our part for our communities and our country, including our shared climate.” Generational Shift The IIJA is not another stimulus effort; it represents a generational shift in how and what types of projects get done,

noted Brookings. Federal agencies, including DOT, DOE and EPA, have to oversee the surge in funding, including administering new grants and designing new programs. “States and localities, from transportation departments to water utilities, have to identify and execute needed projects on the ground. And this federal, state and local coordination all comes amid continued challenges overseeing other expanded funding from the American Rescue Plan earlier this year,” said Brookings. Passage of a comprehensive infrastructure investment bill also has been a tier-one priority for the American Trucking Association (ATA), which believes IIJA will bolster highway safety, make long-overdue investments in roads and bridges and help grow and strengthen trucking’s workforce. ATA was represented at the White House, and association President and CEO Chris Spear praised the recognition by Congress that “roads and bridges are not political — we all drive them.” A majority in the House and Senate “realized this truth and did what’s right for the country, not themselves,” said Spear. “From farmers to truckers, the millions of hard-working people who make this country great won today.” He said that ATA members can finally see the fruits of their labor in the form of a 38-percent increase in road and bridge funding and an infusion of talent in the trucking sector’s workforce. “Those lawmakers who put their constituents before themselves have now cemented a lasting legacy that the American people will see, feel and use for many decades to come,” added Spear. The types of projects pursued, and the programs channeling resources to projects, will dictate the pace at which funds reach their targets, noted Brookings. State-of-good-repair projects obviously happen faster than new system expansions. “Funding in existing federal programs, including those distributed by formula, also tends to move faster than funding in new competitive grant programs, which involve new rulemaking,” wrote the think-tank. American Public Works Association (APWA) representatives also witnessed President Biden sign the IIJA into law. Like other industry leaders, APWA CEO Scott Grayson stressed how hard association members worked to see the act become reality. “From roads and bridges to better protecting communities against natural disasters to modernizing our water infrastructure network, this new law will deliver significant upgrades in every state and benefit every person,” he said. “The commitment of $550 billion in new federal spending over five years represents a generational improvement that still recognizes the need for local decision-making.” An Enormous Undertaking The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) listed six priorities the Biden administration expects to follow during the legislation’s implementation: • Invest public dollars efficiently, avoid waste and focus on measurable outcomes for the American people; • Buy American and increase the competitiveness of the U.S. economy, especially via “Made-in-America” purchasing requirements, while also bolstering domestic manufacturing and manufacturing supply chains; • Create good-paying job opportunities for Americans by focusing on prevailing wages and the free and fair chance to join a union; • Invest public dollars equitably, including through the “Justice40 Initiative,” which seeks to make 40 percent of

the overall benefits from federal investments in climate and clean energy flow to disadvantaged communities; • Build resilient infrastructure that can withstand the impacts of climate change and helps combat the climate crisis; and • Effectively coordinate with state, local, tribal and territorial governments in implementing IIJA’s critical investments. According to AASHTO, USDOT Secretary Pete Buttigieg said the 24 projects that received $905 million via the Infrastructure for Rebuilding America discretionary grant program are the types of projects his agency aims to support through the IIJA. Projects slated to receive $1 billion worth of fiscal year 2021 discretionary grants via the new Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity program later this year would also exemplify the focus for infrastructure investments. “That’ll give you a sense, but we’ll have so much more to work with” via the IIJA, Buttigieg added. Jim Tymon, AASHTO executive director, said association members and state DOTs want to work with USDOT to implement the law as soon as possible. “State and local transportation agencies are eager to get to work on the multi-modal projects that will provide real benefits to the people of every community across the country.” AGC praised the IIJA for its benefits to the supply-chain system, saying because of the bill’s vote, state and local officials can invest in a more efficient network. “They will also be able to improve roads and bridges to make them safer and more reliable,” said Stephen Sandherr, CEO of the AGC. The American Society of Civil Engineers recently graded the country’s infrastructure system at a C-. “Metro areas will be able to better maintain and expand transit systems,” Sandherr added. “And water authorities will be able to further safeguard the quality of local drinking water, among other improvements funded by this bill. The measure also provides needed investments to make infrastructure more resilient to extreme weather events.” Michael Bellaman, president and CEO of Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) lauded the bill for the opportunity it presents to modernize the nation’s infrastructure, and said ABC members are ready to bring the infrastructure system into the 21st century. But Bellaman tempered his praise, saying ABC is wary of some of the bill’s exclusionary provisions and Biden administration statements that could restrict the eligibility of American workers to compete for and participate in construction projects. And Doug Carlson, CEO of the National Utility Contractors Association (NUCA), said, “never before has the American utility construction industry been given by Congress resources of this magnitude to improve thousands of communities across America.” “An extraordinary achievement” is how Carlson described the passing of the bill and its level of funding. And like the rest of the construction industry, NUCA members are eager to get to work. “They’ll be the ones excavating trenches for new water and wastewater lines,” he said of his association’s membership. “They’ll be the ones replacing dangerous lead pipes to bring clean drinking water to communities across the nation. They’ll be building stormwater systems and new water treatment plants. They’ll also be laying new fiber-optic broadband cables, and helping to build modern ports, highways, railroads, and airports.”  CEG

Hummerbee Makes Good Impression On Mich.-Based Excavator Contractor

At a recent equipment demonstration, Bob Best took notice of the stout, compact articulated loader busily feeding Bandit machines and was immediately impressed.

Rich Droste (L) of Hummerbee and Bob Best, owner of Best Excavation, with the Hummerbee 721R 4-wheel drive compact articulated loader.

At a recent equipment demonstration hosted by Bandit Industries near its headquarters in Remus, Mich., the manufacturer’s extensive line of tree chippers and stump grinders weren’t the only machines to catch the attention of Bob Best, owner of Best Excavation, based in Alma, Mich. Best took notice of the stout, compact articulated loader busily feeding the Bandit machines and was immediately impressed. As it turned out, the loader was on loan from another Michigan-based manufacturer, Hummerbee Rough Terrain Equipment. Brian Kulling, president of Hummerbee, also was on hand at the Bandit demo event and Best sought him out to learn more about the company and its compact articulated loader. Over the 35 years that Hummerbee has been in business, the company has gained a worldwide reputation as a premier manufacturer of rugged and reliable 4-wheel drive articulated forklifts for the beekeeping industry. With the rising popularity of compact machines in the construction, tree care, farming, forestry, landscaping and municipal maintenance industries, Hummerbee saw an opening for a U.S.-made, heavy-duty, compact articulated loader. Applying its decades of experience in the design, engineering and production of rough-terrain machines, the company set about the development of a telescopic, compact articulated loader that would bridge the gap between skid steer loaders / mini wheel loaders and full-sized wheel loaders. The goal was to design a compact loader that is costeffective yet rugged enough to meet the challenging demands of wide-ranging work applications. The result is the Hummerbee 721R, a 4-wheel drive compact articulated loader equipped with a 126-in. telescopic, dual- arm boom, 4,500-lb. tipping load, and is capable of getting around the job site at a speed of up to 14 mph. Powered by a Tier IV Final, 74 hp Kohler turbo diesel engine, Hummerbee’s articulated loader employs a 2-speed hydrostatic transmission with on-the-fly shifting. Best Excavation specializes in post construction site work to prepare projects for final landscaping. Much of the company’s work consists of backfilling around foundations and site development, material placement and leveling on projects within a 40-mi. radius of the company’s home base. Established in 1987 by Fred Best, he grew the company into what it is known as today. Best Excavation is now owned and managed by Fred’s nephew, Bob Best. As the new owner, he brings a new scope to the projects that Best

Excavation has been completing for more than 30 years. Best hopes to continue to find new ways to complete daily operations more efficiently and deliver the same quality service his uncle built the company around. That’s why the Hummerbee caught his attention, but will it fit the bill? Eager to test the new Hummerbee compact articulated loader in a real-world work application, Kulling readily agreed to provide Best Excavation one of its machines for an extended trial period. Best’s immediate impression when operating Hummerbee’s compact articulated loader was that getting accustomed to the machine was extremely easy. “The controls are like a cross between a wheel loader and a garden tractor,” said Best. “The forward / reverse rocker foot pedal, joystick controls and steering wheel are intuitive and very responsive.” Best also was impressed with how much weight the Hummerbee compact articulated loader could lift. The 721R can manage a 2,500- to 3,000-lb. operating load, depending on the tire size and counter weight package. “Unlike many machines of this size, the Hummerbee isn’t tippy or forward heavy at all,” he said. “The telescopic boom offers an advantage in loading a truck, providing access to the full truck bed as opposed to just the back half.” Best found that another advantage of the Hummerbee is that the location of the operator’s position, which is higher up, provides exceptional sight lines on the job site, making it safer to operate. Best also liked the fact that the Hummerbee is a wheeled loader as opposed to a track machine. “With a tracked machine, you have to watch how you turn to avoid tearing up the ground on a finished grade, we didn’t have that issue with the Hummerbee. And because it’s articulated, you can really operate in tight spots,” he said. A multitude of skid steer-style attachments are compatible with the Hummerbee compact articulated loader to equip the machine for a wide range of job functions. And the true, 21gpm auxiliary hydraulic oil flow extends the machines capabilities, which is a unique feature in the compact articulated loader world. “The Hummerbee articulated loader is easy to operate,” said Best. “An entry level person could jump on and go to work. It’s versatile and robust enough to meet the needs of professional contracting companies.” For more information, call Brian Kulling at 800/943-8677 or visit hummerbee.com.  CEG

Cat’s New 304, 305 CR Mini Hydraulic Excavators Increase User’s Performance Built to deliver an improved customer experience, the new 4.4 ton Cat 304 and 5.5 ton Cat 305 CR next generation mini hydraulic excavators deliver more power to the pumps, higher bucket breakout forces and deeper standard digging depths to increase performance by up to 20 percent over their E2 series counterparts. Their grease intervals and extended filter service life, combined with common components throughout the line and flat, easy-to-replace side panels, deliver up to 10 percent lower owner and operating costs, according to the manufacturer. The new 304 and 305 CR models are the final machines to be reengineered to the Cat next generation mini hydraulic excavator line concept. From the 1.6 to 11 ton class models, all 17 to 20 Cat mini hydraulic excavators in the range (depending on region) offer common features and consistent controls layout to simplify training and operator adaptation.

machine control by allowing the operator to switch from conventional lever/foot-pedal steering controls to low-effort joystick operation. Two travel speed ranges and standard cruise control facilitate moving around the job site with minimum operator interaction. Meeting U.S. EPA Tier IV Final and EU Stage V emission standards, the turbocharged Cat C1.7 Turbo engine delivers higher power than the previous C2.4 engine. Standard auto idle, auto engine shutdown and efficient load-sensing hydraulics with variable displacement pump help to lower fuel usage at the site for more affordable operation. High main-relief pressures, coupled with flow rates, generates the hydraulic capacity for high digging and lifting forces and more efficient use of a range of attachments. Complete with quick-disconnect lines, the standard auxiliary system provides the choice of one-way, two-way or continuous flow.

New 304 Increases Stability Built with a new reduced radius design, the 304 features a narrow, 66.9-in. track width, 10 in. slimmer than the 304 E2, for more versatility and access to confined spaces. While narrower, the new 304 design increases performance, balance and stability. Its reduced radius allows for greater stability, both 360-degree and when traveling with loads, while its extra counterweight option takes the model to an even higher level of stability.

Next Generation Comfort, Savings Common to most Cat next generation mini hydraulic excavators, the sealed and pressurized cab enclosure is available with heating and/or air conditioning for all-weather climate control. The cab’s large glass areas plus skylight afford all-around visibility. The large display with advanced touchscreen option provides intuitive machine function control and easy monitoring of critical operating parameters. A canopy option is available in some regions. Daily maintenance checks for the 304 and 305 CR are quickly made from ground level through side doors. Expanded use of common parts throughout the line plus their damage-resistant exterior construction help to reduce parts inventory investment and lower repair costs. Increased service intervals mean these excavators spend more time on the job and less time in the shop. For more information, visit www.cat.com. 

Compact Performance of 305 CR The new engine on the Cat 305 CR excavator delivers nearly 9 percent greater power to increase machine performance. Hydraulic system improvements provide higher breakout forces — 49.2 kN (11,061 lbf) bucket, 28.3 kN (6,362 lbf) standard stick and 25.2 kN (5,665 lbf) long stick — to improve digging efficiency in hard rock applications. It also offers 5.6 in. deeper dig depths than the 305 E2, giving it more application flexibility. Its compact radius swing reduces overhang when working to the side, while its 78-in. track width and new extra counterweight option help to optimize stability and lift performance in confined spaces. Advanced Efficiency Both excavator models now offer an angle dozer blade option to optimize machine flexibility in backfilling and finish grading applications. In addition to offering ample above- and below-grade travel with standard float function for easy clean-up, the angle blade moves 45 degrees left or right of center. Increasing efficiencies and reducing operator interaction with final grading, angle blade movement is controlled by the right-hand joystick, while the left joystick handles machine drive. Tailoring machine weight to job requirements, interchangeable counterweight packages offer the balance between low ground pressure and lifting performance. The Cat Stick Steer System simplifies

While narrower, the new 304 design increases performance, balance and stability. Its reduced radius allows for greater stability, both 360degree and when traveling with loads, while its extra counterweight option takes the model to an even higher level of stability.

Bobcat Debuts Two Reimagined Toolcat Utility Machines Bobcat has refreshed its utility work machine lineup with the all new UW53 and UW56 Toolcat utility work machines. These two models come equipped with a variety of enhancements — both inside and outside the cab. Replacing the previous models of the Toolcat utility work machine lineup, the UW53 and UW56 have the capability for increased attachment versatility, allowing operators to easily turn their equipment into multi-purpose hauling, lifting, mowing, towing and loading machines, according to the manufacturer. These new models have totally redesigned LED lighting, providing increased light dispersion and intensity using less power. The embedded road lights are integrated within the front fenders (instead of on the bottom of the front windshield), providing optimal protection and unobstructed illumination for better visibility in all directions. The rear work lights also have changed to LED, to optimize for better light dispersion. The newly updated dual-drive response system has been enhanced to provide smoother acceleration and deceleration, automatically recalling drive response settings. The first setting provides a smooth,

Ditch Witch RT70 Ride-On Trencher Maximizes the Operator Experience To enhance utility and the fiber contractor’s experience, while tackling tough jobs on tight schedules, Ditch Witch has introduced the RT70 ride-on trencher. The newly designed trencher is equipped with features that increase operator comfort and visibility, helping to boost efficiency and profitability on the job site, according to the manufacturer. For example, the ergonomically designed operator station features an open layout with a 120-degree swivel seat, more leg room and intuitive controls. This enhanced visibility gives operators a full view of the machine — from front tire to back tire and the attachment — helping operators of any experience level increase productivity. The RT70 also includes a cooling fan to reduce temperature levels in the operator station by moving hot, uncomfortable exhaust out of the side of the machine rather than toward the operator like traditional fans. This helps keep workers safer and more comfortable during long days. “At Ditch Witch, we understand the challenges that electric and fiber contractors face daily,” said Steve Seabolt, product manager, ride-on tractors, Ditch Witch. “The RT70 is compact and maneuverable, yet powerful. This new unit, with its unique features, will allow the operator to tackle

tough jobs in tight conditions.” Powered by a 72 hp Yanmar Tier IV Stage V compliant diesel engine, and built with a narrow footprint of 73-in. wide, the RT70 rubber-tire trencher can handle heavy-duty jobs and still easily maneuver around tight job sites, corners and cul-de-sacs with ease. This makes it the perfect go-to trencher to take on even the toughest jobs, according to the manufacturer. It also is available with crab and coordinated steering modes, which allows operators to turn the machine with a steering wheel instead of using two separate levers. This makes it easier to use and frees them up to focus on other parts of the job. The machine’s modular design features a single base unit with the option to move from tires to tracks. And with different attachments, plus a variety of optional add-ons, operators can endlessly reconfigure their machine throughout its lifecycle to customize it for specific job site needs. The RT70 is built to increase operator productivity with daily maintenance points in one easy-to-access location and a single-piece, easy-open hood. Fast and simple maintenance means that operators can spend their valuable time where it matters most — on the job site. For more information, visit ditchwitch.com/ride-on/rt70. 

Toro’s Dingo TX 700 Ideal in Tight Spaces Toro has added the Dingo TX 700 to its already extensive Dingo line-up. Due to the Dingo TX 700’s small size and powerful punch, it’s the ideal machine for both homeowners and contractors working within the confines of tight spaces. It packs 700 pounds of rated operating capacity into its small footprint, bringing Toro-level power to everything it touches, according to the company. “The compact size and flexibility of the Dingo TX 700 is bound to be a game-changer for operators,” said Kyle Cartwright, marketing manager at Toro. “The fact that it’s small, but incredibly capable, increases the applications for the Dingo TX 700 on the job site. This Dingo has the potential to be the compact go-getter of the operation.” Featuring Dingo TX 1000 traction controls and a dedicated stand-on platform, the Dingo TX 700 is easy-to-use and boasts increased comfort and visibility. Even if the buyer is new to oper-

ating heavy machinery, it will quickly become second nature, the company said. The versatility of Dingos, or compact utility loaders, is well-known — and the Dingo TX 700 is no different. In fact, its small size further increases versatility by allowing it to reach areas other Dingos may not. It’s also compatible with dozens of attachments, meaning the machine can be used for a wide range of jobs. Attachments include multiple types of buckets, adjustable forks, a grapple, leveler, utility blade and more. Completing more work using fewer machines is a major advantage, plus, the Dingo TX 700 doesn’t require as much storage space as its larger counterparts. It’s easy on turf, too. The Dingo TX 700 is available in both narrow track and wide track configurations — the wide track option is equipped with the industry tested Camso track system. The system features a less aggressive

tread pattern that’s gentle on turf and minimizes damage, perfect for keeping pristine lawns intact. The new Dingo TX 700 will be available starting mid-year 2022. For more information, visit www.toro.com. 

Takeuchi-US President Jeff Stewart presents a check to staff at the Banks Jackson Food Bank in Commerce, Ga.

On Nov. 12, Takeuchi-US employees, including President Jeff Stewart, presented the Banks Jackson Food Bank in Commerce, Ga., with enough food for 200 Thanksgiving dinners and an extra $2,550 to buy additional turkeys to feed even more needy families. This generous donation, worth a total of about $4,000, started out as a simple accompaniment to a fun company event and morphed into something far more meaningful. In October, Takeuchi hosted employees and their families for Family Fun Day. Leading up to the event, Takeuchi had a food drive to collect both food and monetary donations for the Banks Jackson Food Bank. At Family Fun Day, approximately 200 adults and children enjoyed a pumpkin patch, food from local food trucks and numerous activities including bouncy houses, pumpkin painting, an egg race, a magician, corn hole games, a photo-

booth, a giant “Jenga” game and hayrack rides. One particularly popular event was “Meringue the Manager,” where employees paid money to throw whipped cream pies at their managers, raising an additional $600 for the food bank. Takeuchi then generously agreed to double whatever employees raised, which resulted in the total donation of 200 Thanksgiving dinners and $2,550 in additional funds. “We wanted to host Family Fun Day for our employees so that they could bond after a long year apart following the pandemic,” said Stewart. “It was also a great way for us to come together and do something for our community. I’m proud of how our employees stepped up and raised a significant amount of money that will help local families enjoy Thanksgiving dinners that they wouldn’t have otherwise been able to afford.” For more information, visit www.takeuchi-us.com. 

Ritchie Bros.: Wheel Loader Prices Up 13 Percent in Nov. Ritchie Bros.’ November Market Trends Report continues to show positive pricing trends across all its equipment indexes, with medium earthmoving equipment prices up 36 percent in the United States, while truck tractors and vocational trucks are up 45 percent and 34 percent respectively (for the three months ending Oct. 31, 2021). With this report, Ritchie Bros. has included a special focus on earthmoving equipment sales in the United States and Canada. According to Ritchie Bros. price indexes, wheel loader pricing is up 13 percent in the United States, while dozer pricing is up 10 percent. The free November report is available for download at: rbassetsolutions.com/market-trends-report. “Supply chain issues continue to disrupt the equipment market, resulting in volume declines and older assets with higher usage coming to market in 2021,” said Doug Olive, senior vice president (Pricing), Ritchie Bros. “This tightening supply combined with the unprecedented demand we are driving through our numerous marketplaces is

Conveniently located for sellers in the Permian Basin, West Texas, the Panhandle & New Mexico.

resulting in strong pricing across nearly all asset categories, including dirt moving equipment like dozers, loaders and articulated dump trucks.” Doug Rusch, managing director of Rouse Sales, added, “We continue to observe strong used equipment prices, with retail values rising a further 2 percent in October. Coinciding with this rise, we are also seeing a lingering slowdown in transaction volumes, as ongoing supply chain issues continue to drive cautious fleet management decisions. Retail values now stand 14 percent higher than in January 2021.” For more information, visit www.rbauction.com. 

facing and striping will be completed in October 2024. “Keeping traffic disruptions to a minimum as the project progresses continues to be TxDOT’s biggest challenge,” Sisneros said. “Determining the need and then executing such projects requires a team effort that involves our maintenance crews, area engineers, district staff and district engineer working together to maintain roadways and improve safety, mobility and connectivity.” DPS Sergeant Johnny Bures said in an interview with KCBD, “This is a very busy intersection. It has U.S. 87 that runs through here, and of course that’s a major corridor, which connects the Permian Basin to the South Plains. With 41 running east and west, sometimes early in the morning or when the sun is setting, you have impaired visibility, also. Not to mention, with the way the road is angled, we have a lot of bad crashes out here. “[The improvements are] going to cut down on a lot of the traffic that is travelling north and south that is going to have to interact with the traffic that is on 41,” Bures added. “They will be able to utilize that flyover, where they are not actually coming through this intersection unless they are needing to turn.” The U.S. 87 bridge project is 100 percent in-state funded, said Dianah Ascencio, TxDOT public information officer. “The state funds are a combination of Category 4 [connectivity corridors] funding,” she explained. “That is, $8 million from the Lubbock District for rural connectivity, $8 million from the Lubbock Metropolitan Planning Organization for urban connectivity, and $5.6 million from the Lubbock District’s preventive maintenance funds.”  CEG
