Golden State Bridge Inc. crews began work on the replacement of the Hunter and Panther Creek bridges along U.S. 101 north of Klamath, an unincorporated community in Del Norte in northern California, in October 2020. The plan is to complete the project by next spring. The $38 million California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) project is replacing aging structures that were built a few decades ago. The old Hunter Creek Bridge, a concrete girder-type structure —105-ft. long and has one lane in each direction — is being replaced with a 130 -ft. long post tensioned slab-type bridge, with two x-lanes in each direction, 8-ft. shoulders on either side and a 6-ft. wide path for pedestrians and cyclists. The old Panther Creek Bridge, a concrete girder-type structure, is 137-ft. long and has two lanes in each direction, is being replaced with a 168-ft. long steel tied arch structure-type bridge, with two lanes in each direction, 8-ft. wide shoulders on either side, and a 6-ft. wide path for pedestrians and cyclists. The new bridges Driven piles required approximately 50 percent more length than originally planned. are on the same alignment as the old ones. see SPANS page 48

Lighting It Up On Job Sites Using Illuminating Strategies for Improved Jobsite Safety By Lucy Perry CEG CORRESPONDENT
Optimal lighting is crucial to a hazard-free and efficient construction site. The right lighting not only keeps workers safe, but it can streamline workflow, which saves on construction cost and time. In planning for the proper lighting of a job site, the best place to start is an assessment of your working conditions to set a baseline. From there you can build a lighting usage and maintenance plan. You also should consider adding floodlights or task lighting to improve visibility in specific zones, said surveillance system provider Mobile Video see LIGHT page 40
A lighting placement strategy involves time and planning in order to achieve optimal conditions for safety and efficiency.

Takeuchi US to Make Full Lineup of Compact Track Loaders By Eric Olson CEG CONTRIBUTING EDITOR
After almost six decades as one of Japan’s foremost makers of construction machinery, Takeuchi Manufacturing Co. Ltd. is recognized worldwide for its production of compact machines such as mini-excavators and track loaders. The company has built and shipped its products across the globe from Nagano, Japan, since its founding by Akio Takeuchi in 1963. In the past 45 years, the company began to recognize that North America was becoming its most lucrative market. As a result, it started Takeuchi US in 1979 to distribute its products to contractors via U.S. and Canadian dealerships hungry for its compact equipment. Eventually, that led Takeuchi to acquire factory space in Moore, S.C., just south of Spartanburg, in April 2022 with the intention of dedicating it solely to the manufacture of compact track loaders (CTLs). By last September, production officially began on the machines at the 156,000-sq.-ft. facility, and in mid-April of this year, the equipment maker had turned out its 1,000th compact loader at the site, a model TL12R2. Currently, four Takeuchi compact track loaders are coming off the assembly line in Moore: the TL6, TL8, TL10 and the TL12 models. “For us, this plant represents a natural progression,” said Jeff Stewart, president of Takeuchi US. “When you look at CTLs, the U.S. consumes about 95 percent of Takeuchi’s production. They were made in Japan to begin with, but it just made sense to get the production closer to the most consumers. We started looking for a place to build a plant and we were very fortunate to find this facility here in South Carolina. After we bought it, production on our CTLs began as soon as possible.” The decision also eliminated the need to ship CTLs from an overseas facility to North American dealers and customers. As Takeuchi’s global markets expand, the company expects to export some machines from the United States to other countries. Stewart said that, for the foreseeable future, all Takeuchi CTLs built in Moore are strictly for U.S. consumption. Short term, the company wants to be able to assemble all CTL models in the upstate South Carolina plant by the end of this year. “Our goal in the next 24 months is that we will make all Takeuchi compact loaders for the worldwide market from this plant and then start exporting them to other countries,” he said. “The places that we primarily export to are Australia and New Zealand, and our sister company in France is selling a lot of them there. Each of those areas outside of the U.S. are where our CTLs are gaining in popularity.” Founder Creates Mini-Excavators, Invents CTLs Prior to launching Takeuchi Manufacturing, Akio Takeuchi was a supplier of machine components for other big companies in his native country. Several years after his company was established, Takeuchi introduced the first compact excavator in 1971 after having been asked to create a small excavator that could work specifically on house foundations. “A plumber friend of his out digging holes around houses wondered whether Mr. Takeuchi could make the job easier on him,” said Stewart. “So, Mr. Takeuchi adapted the large excavator design by shrinking it down and putting it onto a 360-degree swivel platform so they could work closer to

homes.” What he came up with was a versatile mini-excavator able to perform better than its larger counterparts, Stewart said, setting the stage for one of the highest growth product segments ever introduced in the compact equipment market. Later, Takeuchi continued to lead the compact industry with the introduction of the first CTL in North America. According to Stewart, the company began selling that machine in 1986. “Most people don’t know that Mr. Takeuchi was the inventor of the compact track loader.” Since then, the popularity of Takeuchi CTLs has grown to the point that they are now the machine of choice for many contractors, Stewart said. “We made a dedicated CTL,” he said, “as well as purposebuilt the frame of the machine, added the tracks to it and got the stability where it needed to be. When it comes to compact loaders, that design is our biggest claim to fame.” Electric Over Hydraulic CTLs Takeuchi also is working to begin building its first electric over hydraulic compact loaders, starting with the TL11 model. Stewart said the company’s equipment dealers are eagerly awaiting the new product, engineered to allow for much more flexibility regarding attachments and operator preferences. The TL11 is not an electric machine, he clarified, but a diesel CTL controlled by electric over hydraulic functionality. “Right now, all of our machines, except for our truly dedicated electric mini-excavators, have hydraulic pilot controls, meaning when an operator moves the handle it pushes a plunger that causes the pilot pressure to go down through the control valve to make the machine move,” Stewart said. “The TL11 will be different in that it will be electronically controlled with a pressure-sensing switch that will detect what it needs to do. It will send a pulse to the brains of the machine to change the control valve. That also gives the
operator flexibility to change various other functions and set it to work exactly as he or she wants it to.” Takeuchi US Works On More Eco-Friendly Products In recent years, Takeuchi has been moving toward engineering construction equipment that relies on electric vehicle (EV) technology and, as a result, has seen good sales numbers from its first EV battery-operated mini-excavator, the TB20e model. That has led the manufacturer’s designers to put three more electric excavator models on the drawing board, including five-, four-, and one-ton machines, said Stewart. Takeuchi’s efforts are part of its green initiatives and a desire to be a good steward of the global environment. For instance, he noted that the equipment maker has invested more than $3 million just this year to install solar panels in its American facilities, with goal of becoming carbon neutral by the midpoint of next year. He cautions, though, that EV technology is still in its infancy and there are challenges that need to be overcome. “The construction equipment industry is behind the car industry when it comes to EVs, but we are catching up with them,” Stewart said. “The problem that we have, obviously, is the cost. You can make a car battery larger and do different things with it but trying to fit a battery that we need into a compact excavator raises that cost substantially. Of course, our engineers are working tirelessly to adapt and make batteries smaller, thereby reducing the cost. Right now, though, that is the biggest barrier I see to full entry into the market. “We have made our TB20e probably more friendly than anybody else’s,” he added. “You can charge it on a 110 triple charge while you run the machine, you can charge it on 220 volts to power it up at night, or you can do it on an off-board 480-volt charger. So, we have put the time and energy required to power our machines into the consumer’s hands.” CEG (All photos courtesy of Takeuchi US.)

Liebherr Holds Earthmoving, Material Handling Seminar Liebherr USA Co. Earthmoving and Material Handling Technology held an onsite sales and training seminar for both internal and external distribution network participants to receive extensive product knowledge and hands-on machine time featuring the bulk of the product segment’s offerings. The event consisted of five classroom sessions for participants to learn extensive product information from Liebherr experts, followed by tours of the Liebherr USA Co. headquarters and the neighboring Liebherr Mining Equipment facility. The Liebherr team and all participants were then transported to a local Liebherr quarry to allow for seat time on a wide range of Liebherr’s earthmoving and material handling technology products. “In a more and more digitalized world, inperson trainings continuously serve as the dynamic heartbeat of distribution networks, forging of connections, and conveying essential information about Liebherr earthmoving and material handling equipment,” said Kai Friedrich, divisional director of earthmoving and material handling technology. “The value lies not only in the dissemina-
tion of knowledge, but also in the intangible magic of human interaction, sparking innovation and simply having a good time together.” Classroom The first half of this event provided all participants with five in-depth classroom sessions held by the Liebherr product management team based in the USA and Europe. Each session focused on a different earthmoving and material handling machine including crawler excavators, wheel loaders, dozers, material handlers and the TA 230 articulated dump truck. Each session was run by two product managers who specialized in the featured machine providing in-depth knowledge to equip the distribution network participants with essential information about the equipment, thus enhancing their own sales forces. Hands On At the quarry, the whole product range was featured during the hands-on sessions including crawler excavators, wheel loaders, dozers, material handlers and the TA 230 articulated dump truck. These hands-on ses-
sions allowed participants to utilize what they learned in the classroom and put their new field knowledge into practice with Liebherr certified product managers on-site to support. This training also serves as a great opportunity for Liebherr’s distribution network to get seat time in a wide variety of Liebherr machines. This was the first in-depth training on the TA-230 where participants were able to get under the hood and behind the wheel with product experts on-site to explain the latest Liebherr technology. The Liebherr Earthmoving and Material Handling Technology team look forward to expanding this product line within the next decade, the company said. Network. Operate. Execute “This sales and product seminar plays a vital role in empowering our dealer sales force with the essential tools and knowledge required for successfully selling Liebherr equipment. The event serves as a catalyst for the product management team to consistently furnish informative resources, comprehensive support, and
continuous training to the dealer sales channels,” said Nick Rogers, general manager, product management and sales support. “We firmly believe that by developing a deeper comprehension of our product lines and their distinctive features, sales representatives will be better positioned to engage customers with confidence, presenting solutions that ensure optimal results.” Throughout the event, each attendee was able to participate in industry networking opportunities with Liebherr staff as well as the rest of the distribution network. The team also held an on-site barbeque at the quarry with games and entertainment for participants to enjoy. “Beyond the scope of training, the sales seminar fosters connections among dealerships nationwide, affording representatives the opportunity to network, exchange ideas and share effective solutions that have been employed to overcome challenges encountered in their daily operations,” noted Rogers. Reducing Noise, Dust Emissions for More Sustainability Excessive noise and dust emissions result in damage to health in the long term. To protect not only employees on building sites, but also human and animal life in the surrounding area, Kleemann continuously develops new measures for reducing and efficiently containing noise and dust emissions. Kleemann machines of the latest EVO2 generation thus work with a lower sound power level than their predecessor models. Less Noise in Urban Areas Particularly on construction sites in intra-urban areas, many people are Kleemann plants with water spraying system in different positions. exposed to noise emissions. Comprehensive noise protection is therefore all the more important here. However, regulations of local authorities with regard to the sound level of construction sites are not standardized. In order to optimize noise protection for residents and the construction site team independently of this, in the past Kleemann has dedicated a lot of develop work into the emission reduction of its plants. As a result, the basic versions of the current machines operate at sound power levels up to 6.2 dB lower than the predecessor models — the perceived noise is thus 75 per-
cent lower. This is a clear improvement not only for users but also for residents. Kleemann Solutions The standard version of the Kleemann machines of the latest EVO2 generation already operates at 87/88 decibels (dB) at the operator’s stand. Optional noise protection packages reduce the sound power level of the complete plant by a further 3 dB and halve the perceived noise level once again. Categorization aid: An average pneumatic drill reaches approx. 120 dB, a vacuum cleaner 70 dB. Sustainability in the Series As the fan speed is regulated according to load, ambient temperature and degree of cooler contamination, even the basic configuration of the mobile jaw crusher MOBICAT MC 110(i) EVO2 is very low-noise. With the additional noise-protection package, the plant can be operated without noisedamping headsets — depending on the ambient conditions and local regulations. Even without the noise protection package, only 90 dB are measured directly at the machine. The noise protection package results in around 85 dB in the direct vicinity of the machine.
Effective Dust Containment Not only efficient noise protection, but Kleemann plants: Less noise and dust for more sustainability. also containment of the dust development benefits employees, residents and the complete environment. This protects user and residents — and, ultimately, such measures also ensure greater acceptance of urban building sites. Kleemann, with a special belt cover and a water spraying concept, has developed two measures that contribute to dust reduction. Water pump systems can be connected to the intelligently positioned water spraying system so that, among other things, standing water bodies or tanks can be used. The cover means that the fine dust particles are no longer blown away but rather remain Noise-protection concept MOBICAT MC 110(i) EVO2: on the conveyor. Montabert Opens Its New Distribution, Rebuild Center By Katherine Petrik CEG EDITORIAL ASSISTANT
Aaron Scarfia (L), GM Montabert USA, and Michael Gidaspow, vice president products, service and solutions Komatsu America, with a Montabert V56 hammer.
Montabert USA held an open house on Sept. 28 to celebrate the opening of its expanded distribution and rebuild facility in Nashville, Ill. This expansion will enhance the company’s factory-certified rebuild system, as well as allow more space to store parts and repair larger hammers with the new rebuild pit. “We’re here today in Nashville, Ill., to launch our new rebuild and reman facility,” said Aaron Scarfia general manager of Montabert USA. “This has been our distribution center since April 2019, and we’re excited to bring our rebuild capabilities in house. This really expands our abilities to service our customers with repairs or, if they have an older or aged Montabert breaker, to trade in.” Amanda Carpenter, customer service, warehouse and rebuild manager, said the facility is all encompassing. “We ship out all United States orders from this location and store all parts and equipment in house as well,” she said. With the rebuild process brought in house, including all customer repairs, servicing machines out in the field, break downs, etc., customers can send their hammers in to be diagnosed, repaired and returned to them in a more efficient manner. “The advantage of bringing the rebuild process in-house is that all the parts are available, it cuts down on turn-around time, technicians are on site and quality assurance is on site,” said Carpenter. This new facility services the entire United States dealer network of 20 to 30 certified dealers. All orders come through the Nashville distribution center. Customers can send hammers to be rebuilt, or if they want to trade older hammers for newer models,
Montabert will buy back the old ones to refurbish and resell. “For customers looking buy a new Montabert breaker, we’ll buy the old breaker back from them, sell them a new breaker and install it on their machine so they can start producing,” said Scarfia. Rebuild Pit “In this area, we take in customers’ hammers, tear them down and inspect them, diagnose any problems and send a report. If they want us to proceed with putting it back together, it is rebuilt in this area and sent back out to the customer,” said Carpenter. The new facility has a 10-ton crane that can lift the biggest hammers and equipment; a lift table that can lift the hammer up and down in various positions and levels so the technician can work safely; and a test bench to test hammers once they are rebuilt. “Our technicians have everything they need to rebuild a hammer,” said Carpenter. Rebuild Capabilities As part of Montabert’s “reman” program, the company will purchase older, used models from customers, rebuild them and sell them as remanufactured equipment. “We buy back older hammers, bring them to the warehouse and rebuild them, repaint them and resticker them,” said Carpenter. “We sell them as remanufactured equipment to other customers at a discounted price with a six-month warranty. All remanufactured inventory stays in house.” CEG (All photographs in this article are Copyright 2023 Construction Equipment Guide. All Rights Reserved.)

Rotastar Boasts ‘Revolutionary’ Polyurethane Flexible Stars The Rotastar screening bucket is designed with revolutionary polyurethane flexible stars mounted to heavy-duty steel shafts that agitate and rotate material with no pinching or crushing inside of the rugged heavy duty steel bucket. Working on a concept very similar to a trommel screen, complete material separation is achieved. The Rotastar screening system has applications that are limited only by the user’s imagination, including topsoil production, separating waste, turf, roots, gypsum, wet heavy clay and many other materials. The ability to adjust the rotation speed of the polyurethane stars as well as adjusting the star spacing allows users to customize the output size of the material to meet their needs. Because the polyurethane stars are flexible, they absorb a tremendous amount of energy; as a result, the screening process is very quiet and larger particle sizes are handled with ease. The unit is not designed to crush or beat materials; rather, it’s designed to separate materials. Therefore, if you are working with separating dirty materials that includes paper, plastic or other garbage, it does not pull the garbage through the fingers and
attempt to shred it. Instead, it separates the garbage and leaves it in the bucket with the tailings. The Rotastar design is so advanced it only takes one pass through the screener to achieve complete separation of the desirable material from the unusable tailings, the manufacturer said. The owners of A & D Equipment are second-generation excavating contractors who use the product every day and are confident of the high production and durability that the product brings to the table. A & D Equipment is confident that the Rotastar will bring the following advantages: • Eliminate conventional excavating costs — When utilizing the Rotastar technology, the costs of loading, transporting, tipping and processing are significantly reduced. It is the first excavator-mounted polyurethane star screener in the United States. • Gain access to the toughest job sites — Compact and easy to transport, giving you great site access. Easy installation with no case line necessary and only one-way hammer circuit required. • Rugged construction with easy maintenance — Built with the best materials for
Donna LaFata, president, and Anthony LaFata, vice president, bring more than 50 years of excavating experience to A & D Equipment. Their first Rotastar is still in use on their job sites every day.
reliability. Easy to remove transmission guard, simple heavy-duty chain drive and the unique Rotastar design prevents shaft wear. • Screen wet or dry materials — The flexible Rotastar is gentle on fragile material and ideal for topsoil, waste, turf, roots, gypsum and many other materials. The Rotastar is ideal for utility contractors and pipeline contractors to create bedding right on site, eliminating the cost and space of bringing in a screening plant or paying to have bedding material brought on site. If you are doing some excavation but have no need for topsoil, you can use the Rotastar to make topsoil for resale. • Custom solutions available — You can tailor your output size with a variety of star, collar and spacer options, enabling any size company to take advantage of the right fit for them. • Add the Steelwrist tiltrotator — Achieve 360-degree attachment rotation with 45degree tilt, high flow hydraulics and the safety of Front Pin Lock technology. Rotastar screening buckets are available in a wide variety of sizes to fit your needs, from skid steers to mini-excavators all the way up to 30-ton excavators. Lightweight and flexible polyurethane stars rotate in one direction and agitate the materials without pinching or crushing, allowing for complete separation and quiet operation.

Kubota Tractor Corporation, Land Pride Esco Offers Wheel Expand Suite of Attachment Offerings Loader Buckets for Numerous Classes
Robust Design...
HD wheel loader buckets are available in 6.5 to 14.0 cu. yd. capacities.
Esco’s HD wheel loader buckets are available in 6.5 to 14.0 cu. yd. capacities for 300 to 800 hp class machines. The robust design delivers enhanced durability and comes standard with the Ultralok tooth system. Wear package options include full or partial liner kits for inside or outside the bucket, Toplok lip and wing shrouds, cast corner wear shoes, Infinity buttons and blocks, bolt-on skid plates and a rock guard. They are a dependable choice for tough construction or quarry applications, according to the manufacturer. Esco General Purpose (GP) Class Esco offers a competitive line of GP wheel loader buckets ranging from 2.0 to 9.0 cu. yd. capacities for 100 to 400 hp class machines. The buckets feature forward projecting side reinforcement plates to reduce spillage and AR400 protection in high wear areas; and come standard with a spill guard, bolt-on skid shoes and bolt-on cutting edge. Available with direct- pin or quick coupler connections; and option to include Ultralok points and bolt-on adapters. The bucket was developed for more production with lower fuel consumption than conventional designs. Esco Extra Heavy Duty (XHD) Class Available for all popular OEM wheel loaders used in tough aggregate and mining operations, ESCO XHD buckets feature heavier plate lug connections, beams and gussets to match extreme digging requirements. The XHD buckets feature the Ultralok tooth system — or for larger machines, the Nemisys N65 or N70 system. In addition to fully cast lip and wing wear protection, Esco offers custom engineered interior and exterior wear packages. The XHD loader bucket delivers exceptional durability and performance in extreme conditions with lower maintenance requirements, the manufacturer said. For more information, visit www.esco.weir.
Kubota’s newest grapple, the CGC1040 compact claw grapple, is made from high-tensile AR400 steel and performance-matched specifically for Kubota SCL1000 stand-on compact loader power unit.
Kubota Tractor Corporation and Land Pride announced the introduction of new construction attachments at this year’s World of Concrete show to include a new line of performance-matched vibratory compactors, grapples and snow blowers, which will be available at authorized Kubota dealerships this spring. “Kubota and Land Pride work hand-in-hand with product development,” said Michael Butler, Land Pride product manager. “Together, our equipment is performance-matched so as Kubota is refining, upgrading, and expanding its power units, Land Pride is engineering with the same quality and innovation on complementary attachments. This year, we are adding three more attachment lines to our already diverse suite of construction equipment and attachments.” New 2023 Kubota by Land Pride attachment introductions include: • Vibratory Compactors AP-PC400 / 700 / 1000 — The new line of plate compactors are matched to Kubota excavators, in the 3- to 8-ton size range. These versatile tools effectively compact soil and aggregate in open trenching, leveling, and embankment construction applications. These compactors are durable and ready for everyday use by construction crews in concrete applications and municipality work. Available at Kubota dealerships now. • Compact Claw Grapple AP-CGC1040 — Kubota’s newest grapple, the CGC1040 compact claw grapple, is made from high-tensile AR400 steel and performancematched specifically for Kubota SCL1000 stand-on com-
pact loader power unit. At just over 300 lbs. and 40 in. wide, the CGC1040 is ideal for landscapers looking to move brush and limbs or even set large stones as a landscape feature. The narrow width of the claw grapple, paired with the narrow width of the SCL, allows for easy access through most residential gates for higher productivity. The CGC1040 Compact Claw Grapple will be available at Kubota dealerships starting in May 2023. • Snow Blowers AP-SBL3074 / 3084 & AP-SBL3574 / 3584 — New in 2023 are the introduction of two snow blower models, the SBL30 and SBL35. Kubota’s new snow blowers are available with hydraulic flow rates to match a number of Kubota power units, including the SSV and SVL lines. The new snow blowers feature optional bolt-on wings that add an additional four inches of width, to bring more snow into the machine, plus an optional fold-over chute can be added to direct snow more precisely. The SBL30 Models feature two motor options to accommodate lower flow machines, while the SBL35 Series has one motor available and matches the high-flow capabilities of the SVL97-2. Kubota’s new snow blowers increase options for snow removal companies, landscapers, farmers and ranchers. Kubota’s new construction equipment attachments will be available at Kubota dealerships nationwide in spring 2023. Specifications for all models can be found at LandPride.com. Lighting Placement Must Be Precisely Choreographed LIGHT from page 1
Guard. And you should think about access to natural lighting wherever possible, said the Bowie, Md., company, as it can help cut electricity usage and costs. “Overall, being proactive and regularly assessing the lighting situation on your construction site can ensure optimal conditions,” the company added.
ronmental regulations, noted Mobile Video Guard. “These include addressing the need for the proper placement and installation of lighting equipment.” The NFPA also helps ensure the best possible design and use of lighting products to reduce risk of injury resulting from darkness or shadows.
Shedding Light On Safety Better lighting improves safety conditions on the job site by reducing the possibility of slips, trips and falls, for starters. Optimal visibility through proper lighting keeps employees productive and safe in performing their duties. According to Mobile Video Guard, the right light technology also can promote ontime and in-budget project completion. All this “while still ensuring that construction sites meet safety requirements and operate at maximum efficiency,” said the company. And having lighting that is properly designed, installed, operated and maintained helps workers to make the right decisions more quickly with reduced risks. “Improved lighting also increases worker morale by making the workplace environment more pleasant and comfortable,” said Mobile Video Guard. OSHA requires that all employees who work during nighttime shifts have adequate lighting for the job they are performing. In fact, OSHA standard 29 CFR contains the minimum requirements on lighting, according to video security system provider Stealth Monitoring. Stealth writes that OSHA also considers standards and recommendations from other agencies such as American National Standards Institute (ANSI). The original practice for industrial lighting from ANSI standard A11.1-1965, R1970 contains recommended values of illumination. OSHA recommends that employers use this standard to determine sufficient lighting required to provide for the safety and health of employees in workplaces. “OSHA standard 1926.56(a) only provides minimum illumination requirements for a construction site,” according to Stealth. “Your construction site might also have more stringent occupational safety requirements for exterior lighting.” The security system company urges contractors to also know the regulations for their particular state as well as those of the state they’re working in. In addition to ANSI, the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) has established lighting standards that apply to construction. NFPA standards address issues from potential sources of hazardous materials to envi-
Brighter Lighting Strategies Traditional incandescent bulbs are still common on job sites because of their affordability and easy installation. “The warm glow of an incandescent bulb can be attractive, but they don’t always provide the best light for construction,” according to Mobile Video Guard. They must be used in conjunction with other lighting sources to achieve a higher light output and optimal lighting conditions. “LED lighting has become a must-have for construction sites, providing a range of benefits that are almost too good to pass up,” said the company. “With LED lights, you can reduce energy costs and gain excellent levels of illumination.” They are more resistant to vibration and breakage because they are built around solid-state technology. “That makes LED lighting ideal for construction sites, where harsh conditions can test the limits of traditional lighting fixtures.” And with their long lifespan, maintenance staff won’t be replacing them often, so all the areas of the construction site can be properly lit for longer periods. “LEDs also provide bright white light directly to the work area, which significantly enhances visibility,” said the company. Lighting placement on construction sites must be carefully planned to achieve optimal conditions for working safely and effectively. Lighting should cover all areas, said the security consultant, including all spots where workers will be present and where materials and equipment are stored. “It’s also important to ensure that there are no shadows where workers may be directly exposed, as this can be a safety hazard.” And lighting should be placed optimally to minimize glare in order to reduce any discomfort for workers. “Poorly placed lighting can result in a lower level of productivity due to decreased visibility and strain on the eyes.” Plus placement must be properly and precisely choreographed to meet all safety and productivity requirements. Natural sunlight can be a cost-effective way maximize lighting while minimizing energy costs, noted Mobile Video Guard. Many contractors find the cost of installing and running electrical lighting is a significant chunk of the operating budget.
“On suitably sunny days, natural light can help to reduce glare and create the optimal lighting environment for construction workers,” said the security consultant. To maximize natural light’s benefits, install large sections of glazing and use white reflective surfaces to encourage light reflection, they suggested. “It is also important to pay attention to the sun’s path and the effects of shading.” Lighting placement should be adjusted throughout the workday. Mobile Video Guard believes that one often underestimated tool in achieving optimal lighting conditions is the use of reflectors. “By strategically placing reflectors around the worksite, the amount of available light can be vastly increased,” said the company. The increased light will cast away unwanted shadows at certain areas while providing lighting to a previously invisible space in others. “Reflectors can be especially beneficial when working on a tight budget or with limited sources of power,” said the company. “Furthermore, reflectors are easy to set up and cost-effective, making them a great option for any construction site.” To achieve optimal lighting, the type of lights needed should be determined based on the requirements for different tasks and materials being used. The lights should be strategically placed to maximize light coverage and to reduce shadows and dark areas, according to Mobile Video Guard. Lights also should be adjustable in both intensity and height, depending on the changes in the work site. They should be long-lasting, resistant to shock and weather conditions and require minimal maintenance. Traffic Safety Warehouse says a construction zone lighting plan starts with the understanding that its development is a process that will take some time. “There are a lot of environmental factors for you to consider,” said the online safety store. • Draw Out the Project Area Carefully assess and draw out the designated work zone, creating a detailed, scaled
image of the entire site to note where you’ll need to place certain things. “Make sure that you’re marking the locations of all workers, machinery, and even your traffic control equipment,” said the company. Get as clear of a picture as possible so to most effectively arrange lights. Section off zones by station and shade out places with possible obstructions. “This blueprint will provide you with an idea of what areas might need a bit more light than others.” • Determine Required Level of Light According to Traffic Safety, there are three main levels of lighting to consider, depending on your circumstances. Level I is the type of illumination necessary for all general working tasks — setup, takedown and moving between locations. Level II is a bit brighter, effective in areas near large, moving construction equipment. Level III is the highest illumination for those in road construction, essential in regions undergoing intricate repairs and utilizing very powerful equipment. “These areas must have an average light radius of 20 foot-candles, while Level II and I zones must register at only 10 or 5 footcandles,” said Traffic Safety. Once you have light levels planned for your job site you can move on to choosing the lighting technology you’ll use. Some lighting devices may make a better fit than others depending on the task, so be aware of all options to make the most informed decision. Traffic safety lists four main kinds of lighting setups — portable light plant towers, balloon lighting, roadway luminaries and equipment lights. Because towers and illuminates allow you to mount additional lighting to them, they’re great for creating a wide radius of illumination. They’re also ideal for providing more directed light downward when necessary. Balloon lighting also generates a larger area of evenly distributed light but works best when mounted to slow-moving equipment, perfect for Level II regions. “On the other hand, equipment lights are smaller in size and fastened to signs and barricades,” said Traffic Safety Warehouse. “They’re better for providing focused light along a smaller area and directing traffic safely through the construction zone.” Field testing is crucial to ensure lighting equipment provides the right amount of coverage for your needs. “In fact, failing to perform this initial trial can even leave your team without light in one of the most critical zones,” said the company. NFL Hall of Famers to Speak at Work Truck Week 2024 Jerome “The Bus” Bettis and Emmitt Smith, two of the National Football League’s greatest running backs, will team up as Work Truck Week 2024 keynote speakers at NTEA’s annual meeting on March 7, 2024. With four Super Bowl victories between them, the pair have plenty to share about teamwork, persistence and success. Work Truck Week, North America’s largest work truck event, returns to Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis March 5 to 8, 2024. It encompasses The Work Truck Show, Green Truck Summit, NTEA Annual Meeting, Ride & Drive, educational sessions and more. Green Truck Summit is March 5, educational sessions run March 5 to 7, and Work Truck Show exhibits are open March 6 to 8. Registration opens in October at worktruckweek.com. Work Truck Week is produced by NTEA – The Work Truck Association. The Annual Meeting keynote will be a question-and-answer conversation between Bettis and Smith moderated by Jason Ritchey, 2024 NTEA Convention chair, and president and owner of Curry Supply Co. Both Bettis and Smith left college after junior year to enter the NFL Draft. Each was selected in the first round. Bettis was drafted by the L.A. Rams in 1993. In his first season, he was named NFL Co-Rookie of the Year, Sporting News Rookie of the Year and Rams MVP. He was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1996. In his first season with Pittsburgh, he won NFL Comeback Player of the Year. Over the course of his career, he was voted to the Pro Bowl six times and was named first-team All-Pro twice. In 2001, he won the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award for his work with The Jerome Bettis Bus Stops Here Foundation that assists underprivileged inner-city youth. In 2006, Bettis retired from the NFL after helping the Steelers win Super Bowl XL in his hometown of Detroit. He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2015. Bettis wrote two autobiographies and has had a successful broadcast career as a football analyst for national sports networks and as host of The Jerome Bettis Show in Pittsburgh on WPXI-TV. Bettis returned to Notre Dame to complete his education, graduating on May 15, 2022, with a business

degree. Smith, who remains the NFL’s all-time leading rusher, was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in 1990. He spent 13 seasons with the Cowboys and two with the Arizona Cardinals, returning to the Cowboys for a day to officially retire with the team in 2005. Smith is the only running back to ever win a Super Bowl championship, NFL Most Valuable Player award, NFL rushing crown and Super Bowl Most Valuable Player award in the same season. He led the league in rushing and won the Super Bowl the same year three times, in 1992, 1993 and 1995. Smith was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2006 and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2010. Since retiring from professional football, he has built companies spanning real estate, construction, technology and renewable energy. His current businesses include E J Smith Enterprises; E Smith Legacy, a premier real estate development firm; E Smith Advisors, a majority-owned joint brokerage firm; EJ Smith Construction, a Dallas-based

Golden State Bridge Rebuilds Hunter, Panther Creek Spans
Golden State Bridge is in the process of replacing the Hunter and Panther Creek bridges along U.S. 101 north of Klamath, two aging structures that were built a few decades ago. SPANS from page 1
The new Hunter Bridge is 90 percent complete, with crews focusing on roadwork and the bridge approaches to deliver it. The Panther Creek Bridge is 70 percent complete, with the remaining efforts focused on the pedestrian walkway and hanger cable assemblies. Contractor at Work Robert Coupe, Golden State’s project manager, is taking on the challenges successfully as the project moves forward. “The fabrication of the components for the Panther Creek bridge occurred in several different locations by different firms,” he said. “Coordination of the components to assure proper fit was a challenge. Constant communication and coordination of shop drawings was required. Progress has been steady. Fabrication of the Panther Creek Bridge components took a long time given their unique nature and tight specifications. Fabrication was hampered by the pandemic causing production and delivery timeframes to become extended.” The work is taking place during the day. “At Hunter Creek, the existing ground conditions were different than anticipated,” said Coupe. “Driven piles required approximately 50 percent more in length than originally planned. Procuring the additional materials within the seasonal working windows was key to the successful completion of the work. Also at Hunter Creek, a stream diversion was installed during two consecutive seasons to allow removal of the old bridge and construction of the new bridge. At Panther Creek Bridge, an existing fiber optic cable needed to be relocated twice during the course of the work. Once to the temporary bridge and back to the permanent bridge. The utility crews worked concurrently with the bridge crews to not impact the progress of the work. “Golden State Bridge and Caltrans have been partners throughout the duration of the project,” he added. “We have worked closely together to solve problems as they arise to keep the project moving.” Before the reconstruction could begin, an 170-ft. long,
The plan of attack for Panther called for the construction of abutments with precast concrete components, support steel arches from the existing bridge on falsework during erection and castin-place concrete decks on stay-inplace steel deck forms.
one-lane in direction temporary bridge was built to handle local traffic. “The temporary bridge was built in four months beginning in October 2020,” said Coupe. “The project specifications called for a contractor designed modular temporary bridge. The geometry of the bridge was depicted in the project plans [alignment, span length, etc].” The temporary bridge is a steel truss modular bridge with asphalt paved approaches, founded on cast-In-drilled hole concrete piles and precast concrete abutments. It was assembled with a Link-Belt 80-50 hydro crane and launched with a Kobelco SK230 excavator with the cantilever supported by a Liebherr LR1250 crane. The Hunter Bridge was demolished in two weeks, one week per-side. The Panther Bridge required one month. “For the Hunter bridge, we demolished it in place with excavators and protective covers; and for Panther, we used cranes to hoist out entire girders and then took out the bent caps in pieces, also with cranes,” said Coupe. Debris containment platforms were set up to capture material. Crews used a Kobelco SK230 excavator, a Liebherr LR1250 crane and a Link-Belt 238 crane. The reconstruction of the bridges, of which the Panther Bridge has an arch, is on schedule. The plan of attack for Panther called for the construction of abutments with precast concrete components, support steel arches from the existing bridge on falsework during erection and cast-in-place concrete decks on stay-in-place steel deck forms. “Traffic impeded movement within the project site at times but for the most part, had no impact,” said Coupe. “Traffic was controlled with temporary traffic signals, allowing traffic to flow in one direction at a time.” Work began on both bridges simultaneously. “Hunter was built in two halves with traffic being moved to the completed first half to allow construction of the second half,” said Coupe. “We drove drilled 30 steel pipe piles up to 150 feet at Hunter and, for Panther, eight cast-in-drilled-hole concrete piles up to 200 feet deep. All of the fabricated items

were unique to the project. Placing the pieces was not difficult, they just took a long time to get. “Hunter was all cast-in-place concrete,” he added.. “At Panther, the precast pieces are stitched together with cast-inplace closure pours and the deck was cast-in-place. Hunter deck was completed in two pours. The Panther deck was completed in one pour, but had to have two simultaneous pours from the center of the span working outward toward the abutments. The project was in a remote location, so material supply was limited and the logistics of getting prefabbed materials to the project site was complicated.” The Golden State management team includes Project Engineer Kyle Bommarito, Project Engineer/Project Superintendent Corey Dickens and Project Safety Manager David Blohm. “The team dynamic is awesome,” said Coupe. “We’ve worked together for many years on different complex projects. Our crews are dedicated to producing top quality projects wherever we build them.” Average days have 20 Golden State Bridge and up to five subcontractor employees on-site. The amount of material generated by the demolition operations has not been finalized, although the materials are being recycled. The numbers for new materials are still being tabulated. Golden State has one mobile mechanic that visits the site as needed. The company owns its own equipment, purchasing pieces of iron from local and regional dealerships. The company launched a line of commercial-grade snow blades for heavy-duty snow removal tasks. Additionally, Ignite beefed up existing snow tool lines to provide more efficiency. This includes an optional hydraulic rotation chute for its line of three-point snow blowers, allowing operators to effortlessly aim snow from the comfort of their tractor seat, and a new 10-ft. snow pusher for maximum efficiency. The new offerings deliver a convenient, confident online shopping experience with Ignite’s exclusive Fit Finder tool and fast, direct-to-you delivery so operations of any size can be prepared for winter work, the company said. Commercial-Grade Snow Blades Headlining Ignite’s winter tool lineup is the new snow blade series. The line is designed for commercial use and long life in the most extreme work conditions. Available in 72-, 84-, 94- and 108-in. models, these heavy-duty attachments allow skid steer and compact track loader operators to effortlessly cut through deep snow. It features a heavy-duty construction, with reinforced frame and attachment points, and a reversable hardened steel cutting edge for the confidence to tackle the heaviest snow year after year. Operators can position the blade 28-degrees left or right with single-cylinder operation for maximum efficiency with each pass. The snow blade line delivers fast ROI and a long service life due to high-quality components, including Faster Brand couplers and Parker hydraulic lines as well as 11-gauge steel construction. The adjustable spring-loaded blade trip helps protect attachment and machine from snow-covered obstacles to minimize downtime and repair costs.
Ignite Attachments launched a line of commercial-grade snow blades for heavy-duty snow removal tasks.
Standard blade guide markers boost visibility and snowclearing precision. Ignite snow blades work with standard hydraulic flow rates, allowing operators to use existing equipment and maximize versatility. Hydraulic Rotation Snowblower Chute Option For compact tractor operators, Ignite now offers an optional hydraulic rotation chute for its line of three-point snow blower attachments. This upgrade saves time and effort when blowing snow, allowing operators to change the direction of snow placement without stepping off their tractor.
The hydraulic rotation chute and three-point snowblower attachments operate off the tractor’s rear auxiliary hydraulics for better equipment utilization and ROI, according to the manufacturer. Snowblower models work with compact tractors ranging from 15 to 65 hp and are available in 50-, 60-, 66- and 74-in. working widths. 10-Ft. Snow Pusher Rounding out its line of snow tools for the 2023-2024 winter season, Ignite added a 10-ft. snow pusher option. The new width, like the existing 6-, 7- and 8-ft. models, is compatible with skid steer and compact track loaders and turns heavy snow into a lighter lift for the carrier. A replaceable rubber cutting edge provides a longer wear life and optimal surface protection. Reversible and replaceable skid shoes double useful life for a low total cost of ownership and extended equipment lifespan. The new 10-ft. working width is compatible with 50-95 hp compact loaders and 60-100 hp compact tractors. Ignite Edge Ignite Attachments offers quality-designed and manufactured tools that are easy to purchase, attach and use. In today’s fast-paced, connected economy, Ignite offers a reliable, cost-effective solution for compact equipment operators of any brand.
