Is your construction fleet ready for winter? As cold weather arrives, it’s critical that your heavy machinery runs when you want it to, even if that’s not until the weather turns warm again. Will you operate your equipment through the colder

months, or will you store it for the winter? That will dictate how you winterize it. Ice can build up quickly in cold, wet weather. Failing to take precautions to prevent the destruction of equipment from extreme elements can cost you in parts replacement and down time when your equipment won’t fire up. see WINTER page 30

Road & Bridge Department Improves County in Texas The world’s first rodeo was held in Pecos, Texas — the current county seat of Reeves County — on Independence Day in 1883. At that time, all roads leading to the historic event were made of either dirt or gravel. Nearly 140 years later, there are still several miles of those roads in the approximately 2,600-sq.-mi. area that makes up Reeves County. Its Road & Bridge Department is maintaining them, while also actively working to reduce their numbers. In 2015, it began a program to rehabilitate and pave. “We started with 4 miles the first year and have increased the number annually, so now we’re between 70 to 80,” said Anthony Lopez, road crew foreman. “Our plan for 2021 is almost 100 miles. The process involves regrading and compacting, followed by chip sealing. It creates a much better, longer-lasting surface for county residents.” Along with Lopez, key individuals of the Road & Bridge Department field crews include Maintenance Foreman Jaime Mendoza and Maintenance Fleet Foreman Joe Baeza. County Engineer Curtis Wilson and Administrator Gary Rumbaugh are part of the leadership team. Permit Supervisor Joel Martinez, Office Manager Karen Baxter, Administrative Assistant Monette Baeza and Permit Inspectors Desi Duarte and Aurelio Lopez also ensure things run smoothly.

In total, the Reeves County Road & Bridge Department is charged with maintaining, rehabilitating and improving more than 580 mi. of roads. In addition to its scheduled plans, it responds to emergency situations, including emergency street repairs. It also cleans and maintains cattle guards, mows public property such as rights-of-way and medians, maintains cemetery maps and a complete list of county cemeteries, and advises historical preservation groups and local government entities on state laws that protect historic cemeteries. Increasing Efficiency A state grant Reeves County received in 2015 allowed the Road & Bridge Department to work on road improvements and gave it the ability to purchase equipment for the chip sealing process, as well as loaders and dozers to process its own materials. Recent additions include several products from Kirby-Smith Machinery Inc. Among

Operator Ian Hunt compacts materials with a Hamm HP 280i pneumatic tire roller. “It’s a nice machine, and I like the comfort in the cab. It’s a smooth ride,” said Hunt.

Operator Roy Lozano blades a road in preparation for chip sealing with a Komatsu GD655-6 motor grader. “It drives and handles well, and I like the visibility to the blade, so that I can easily see the road and materials,” said Lozano. “It increased production and efficiency.”

Continued Improvements The rodeo in Pecos, Texas, has continually been held each year since its inaugural event. Since 1936, it’s been held at the Buck Jackson Arena. Today, visitors have better roads to bring their livestock to the spectacle. “The grant for road work was for 10 years, and we are hoping that the work lasts beyond that,” said Lopez. “Our commitment is to make our residents’ lives better with improvements, and the Road & Bridge Department is a big part of that.” 

Stretching Dollars Maintaining and rehabbing roads are a couple of ways the nearly 60-member Road & Bridge Department team services the approximately 17,000 residents of Reeves County. Additional workers also service the oil and gas industry in the area. Lopez noted that having county crews — it currently has a dirt crew and a chip seal crew — perform the work saves costs and offers greater flexibility than contracting out the work. “It stretches taxpayer dollars and allows us to get more done each year,” stated Lopez. “Additionally, traffic can change from month to month. We may have a road that is in the schedule for some time in the future. If we see that traffic is way down in that area, we can quickly mobilize and start the rehabilitation process instead of waiting until the scheduled date. If we contract that road, we may have to wait for quite some time before the contractor gets to it. That’s not to say that contracting out work is bad. A few roads are done that way each year, but the bulk is handled by the Road & Bridge Department.”

them was a Komatsu GD655-6 motor grader used to blade roads and build the base for chip sealing. “It’s very dependable, which is essential for us,” said Lopez. “Our operators like the visibility to the blade, so they can easily see what they are grading, which increases efficiency and productivity. It really helped last winter when we had a freak storm that dumped about two feet of snow. We drove it into town and helped the city and state plow and open roads. It worked great.” For some general compaction and chip sealing, Reeves County added a Hamm HP 280i pneumatic roller. “Like the motor grader, it’s very reliable and proKirby-Smith Machinery Inc. governmental sales representa- ductive,” said Lopez. “The operators appreciate the tive Dan Thompson (second from R) meets with Reeves ergonomics and how much room they have in the cab, County Road & Bridge Department personnel (L-R) Manny as well as the visibility. It’s a great finish roller, so it Guerrero, Anthony Lopez and Jaime Mendoza. “Dan visits two or three times a year, but he calls or emails weekly to gives us a good surface on the chip sealing.” Additional equipment from Kirby-Smith includes a make sure everything is running smoothly, and if we need Ledwell 4,000-gal. water truck and a JLG SkyTrak anything, he or someone else at Kirby-Smith responds right telehandler. away,” said Lopez.

“We are very pleased with those,” said Lopez. “The SkyTrack is a good general-purpose lift, and the water truck lets us do quite a bit of roadwork before it needs to be refilled. We recently used it to fill firetrucks during an emergency. Both are easy to operate.” Dan Thompson, a governmental sales representative of Kirby-Smith, assisted Reeves County with the purchases and checks in regularly. “Dan visits two or three times a year, but he calls or emails weekly to make sure everything is running smoothly, and if we need anything, he or someone else at Kirby-Smith responds right away. Dan also gives us an opportunity to demo new equipment to see if it is something that will suit our present or future needs. They are knowledgeable about the products, so they help in determining what works best for our needs.”

Operator Sammy Natividad sprays a road prior to blading using a Ledwell 4,000-gal. water truck. “It’s very easy to operate — just a couple of buttons,” said Natividad.

ARTBA Names Inaugural Leadership Impact Awards Winners The American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) Foundation is marking the 25th anniversary of its Industry Leader Development Program (ILDP) with the launch of “Leadership Impact Awards” to honor ILDP graduates. The ILDP annually provides attendees with a solid understanding of industry economics, how transportation work in the United States is funded and financed, how actions by the federal government impact the industry, and how they — and their company or agency — can become politically engaged. Nearly 800 professionals from all eight ARTBA membership divisions representing 200 firms and public agencies have completed the program since 1996. The winners of the 2021 Leadership Impact Awards, announced during the association’s national convention in Pinehurst, N.C., were evaluated on these key criteria: • demonstrated contributions to national, state or local transportation design and construction associations or professional societies in at least one of three areas: infrastructure funding or regulatory advocacy, safety, innovation, technology or communications/marketing; • proven track record displaying visionary thinking, driving change or solving problems that helped improve operational performance; • measurable examples serving as a mentor to firm/agency colleagues or industry peers, and/or driving efforts to promote diversity and inclusion. The winners, followed by the year they completed the

Deere Special Application Vehicles Help First Responders For several years the fire fighters in Silvis, Ill., tried unsuccessfully to find funding for a Special Applications Vehicle (SAV) to fight grass fires and other community emergencies. That’s why when they recently received a SAV, donated by John Deere, it created so much excitement in the department, Silvis Fire Chief John Winters said. “It was a great surprise to be presented with the SAV,” Winters said. “John Deere has always been a great supporter of the local community and this, once again, shows the company’s dedication and support of emergency services.” Winters said the vehicle will be used at controlled burns to ensure fires don’t get out of control, to fight brush and grass fires, and it will be used to respond to emergencies at the annual John Deere Classic golf tournament. “In the past, if there were a fire, it would have been necessary to drive a fire truck across the golf course,” Winters explained. “With this SAV on site, hopefully, we can get to the fire and extinguish it prior to having the need for a full-sized fire engine.” Deere also recently donated SAVs to the Silvis Police Department and Unity Point Health, a hospital system in the Quad Cities,

to help first responders do their jobs effectively. The four passenger Police vehicle for the Silvis Police Department comes equipped with a fully enclosed Tektite HVAC cab, cargo bed, TOMAR emergency lighting suite, siren and PA. “We had a missing child a couple of years ago — she was found — on one of our

nature trails,” said Silvis Police Chief Mark VanKlaveren. “This vehicle would have been perfect for this detail. We would allow other towns to use the vehicle for similar functions.” The EMT vehicle for Unity Point Health features an extended cargo bed designed to accommodate various full-length stretchers with an integrated L-Track for secure trans-

port. Additionally, this SAV features an emergency lighting package, a forward-facing attendant seat with direct patient access and an integrated vehicle Occupant Protection System (OPS) to ensure the safety of all on-board passengers. Adam Sowells, UnityPoint Health – Trinity EMS Systems Coordinator, said the vehicle will be used to provide emergency care at special events, such as the Quad Cities Marathon. “This special John Deere SAV is truly a great solution in providing pre-hospital and emergency care,” Sowells said. “It offers first responders the tools they need to quickly treat and transport patients to an appropriate site of care.” The Silvis Fire Department’s vehicle features a uniquely designed extended cargo bed. The front of the bed houses a QTAC fire suppression skid while the rear of the bed allows for additional firefighting gear and equipment. Additionally, the Fire SAV comes equipped with emergency lighting and heavy-duty winch. Winters said there was one thing he didn’t expect and that was the SAV’s fire-truck red color. “I was surprised to see that it wasn’t green,” he said with a laugh. 

Ritchie Bros. Set to Go Live Feb. 21 to 26 for Annual Florida Auctions in Orlando Ritchie Bros. is now accepting consignments for its next massive annual Orlando auction on Feb. 21 to 26, 2022, which will host live bidding onsite for the first time in two years. Early consigned items may be pre-listed on Ritchie Bros.’ Marketplace-E solution, attracting more buyers for the equipment, with an opportunity to sell before year-end. Any item not sold by Jan. 15, 2022, will cascade directly into the February Orlando event. “We are attracting record levels of demand today, resulting in strong pricing across almost every single asset category — it’s a great time to sell,” said Kari Taylor, chief revenue officer, Ritchie Bros. “If you contact us today, we can get your items pre-listed on our Marketplace-E solution with Make Offer and Buy Now prices. If your items don’t sell on Marketplace-E, we will simply cascade them into our February Orlando auction. It’s the best of both worlds.” Over the past year, Ritchie Bros. has seen a steady growth in demand, with 160 million visits to its online marketplaces. Contractors today need equipment and are being extremely aggressive in their bidding. According to Ritchie Bros.’ latest Market Trends Report, truck tractor prices are up 46 percent year over year in the United States (for the three months ending Sept. 30, 2021), while medium earthmoving, vocational truck, and aerial equipment pricing is up 38 percent, 35 percent and 34 percent respectively. Prices are strong and consignors with surplus equipment are being rewarded. With items pre-listed on Marketplace-E, consignors will benefit from a team of multilingual Marketplace-E Specialists who leverage Ritchie Bros. analytics and demand data to help find the right buyer. If an item is not sold by Jan. 15, it will shift into the company’s biggest auction of the year. “Orlando is our premier global auction, with equipment and buyers from across North America and around the world,” added Jeff Gillmer, vice president, sales. “Last February we sold 12,000 items in Orlando for more than 1,000 companies, achieving $191+ million in gross transaction value. We attracted 22,000 bidders from 80 different countries, all participating online and in real time. “We are also very excited to welcome customers back to Orlando for auction days in February. This destination event has always been a huge networking opportunity for our customers, and we are happy we can be together again soon.” For more information about Ritchie Bros. upcoming Orlando auction, including details about pre-listing items on Marketplace-E, visit rbauction.com/Orlando2022. Companies and individuals looking to consign should contact their local sales representative or the Orlando site directly at 855/331-5789. 

Crews Complete Major Rebuild of I-10 Tuscon Interchange The Arizona Department of Transportation and its construction crews have completed a major interchange reconstruction project in northwest Tucson. The larger, modern interchange provides more traffic lanes to reduce delays while improving safety by eliminating the need for drivers to wait up to 40 times a day for trains passing through this busy area of Tucson. ADOT began the $129 million project in January 2020 and completed work ahead of schedule. The project’s major improvements include: • Widening I-10 from three to four lanes in each direction; • Switching the interchange configuration with new bridges that carry Ruthrauff Road/El Camino del Cerro over I-10 and the Union Pacific Railroad tracks, which eliminates an at-grade crossing and frequent delays; • Widening Ruthrauff/El Camino del Cerro at I-10. The

The project’s major improvements include widening I-10 from three to four lanes in each direction; switching the interchange configuration with new bridges; widening Ruthrauff/El Camino del Cerro at I-10; and constructing an underpass to carry Davis Avenue/Highway Drive under Ruthrauff Road.

new structure features two lanes in each direction for Ruthrauff/El Camino del Cerro and a pair of dual left-turn bays; • Constructing an underpass to carry Davis Avenue/Highway Drive under Ruthrauff Road, with traffic using local roads and the newly-constructed Maryvale Avenue and Chester Way to connect with Ruthrauff Road. All ramps and frontage roads linking Interstate 10 to Ruthrauff Road/El Camino del Cerro are now fully open. ADOT kept I-10 open through the entire reconstruction while maintaining access to businesses. Ruthrauff Road/El Camino del Cerro and the interchange ramps were closed for most of the project, with Ruthrauff Road reopening across I10 in July. Since summer, ADOT has gradually reopened ramps and frontage road segments as crews have completed

building those project elements. While crews have completed all major construction, residents may notice several weeks of minor work and occasional traffic restrictions. The project is part of the Regional Transportation Authority’s roadway improvement plan, managed by the Pima Association of Governments. It is ADOT’s fourth recent major I-10 traffic interchange project in Pima County that allows drivers to cross I-10 without waiting for trains, following similar projects at Prince Road, Twin Peaks and Ina Road. ADOT’s other current Tucson-area interchange project at I-10 and Houghton Road is also nearing completion. The $24.4 million project is expected to wrap up by the end of 2021. ADOT Signs Developer for I-17 Improvement Project The Arizona Department of Transportation has signed an agreement with the developer team that will design, build, operate and maintain the Interstate 17 Improvement Project from Anthem Way to Sunset Point. The total project cost is $445,940,000, which includes the construction cost by the developer team, along with ADOT’s cost to administer the project. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2022 and is expected to take approximately three years. Now that the contract is signed, work can begin on this highly anticipated project that will include 15 mi. of widening from Anthem Way to Black Canyon City and eight miles of flex lanes from Black Canyon City to Sunset Point. The developer team is Kiewit-Fann Joint Venture. Key members of the team include Kiewit Infrastructure West Co.; Fann Contracting Inc.; Kiewit Engineering Group Inc.; DBI Services LLC; CONSOR Engineers LLC dba Apex Design; T.Y. Lin International; Lee Engineering; Terracon Consultants Inc.; Wheat Design Group, Inc.;

Y2K Engineering; and Pinyon Environmental Inc. The KFJV developer team was selected over two other finalists after an extensive review by ADOT with oversight from representatives from the Federal Highway Administration and the Maricopa Association of Governments. All three developer team finalists were encouraged to use innovation and develop alternative concepts to reduce project time and impacts to the traveling public and community while construction is underway. Interstate 17 between Anthem Way and Sunset Point is a major stretch of highway that sees more than one million travelers every year. Once complete, the I-17 Improvement Project will help alleviate congestion and improve safety and traffic flow north of the metro-Phoenix region. This project will improve 23 mi. of I-17, including 15 mi. of roadway widening, two bridge replacements, one bridge deck replacement, 10 bridge widenings and the installation of an 8-mi. flex lane system. 

AGC Names Pepper Construction Most Innovative Business in Industry Chicago-based Pepper Construction was named the most innovative construction firm in the country for developing a virtual reality safety training program by leveraging tools and staffing resources that were already in place to create a “real life” safety learning environment. As a result, Pepper Construction was named as the grand prize winner of the AGC Innovation Awards, sponsored by Autodesk. “In order to make construction projects great, firms must innovate,” said Bob Lanham, the association’s president and president of Williams Brothers Construction Co. Inc. in Houston, Texas. “These award winners have mixed hard work and ingenuity to strengthen their firms and produce outstanding results.” Through collaboration between the safety and virtual technology depart-

ment, the Pepper team developed a virtual training program by customizing it using their own statistics reinforced with industry data with an option to make changes as the data evolved. This process allowed the team to eliminate the need to hire a consultant or purchase new software minimizing financial investment. The team combined BIM models and point-cloud scans that were already in use in their programs with Unreal Engine, a creation engine used to build video games, to immerse employees within a replicated job site with real hazards in an authentic yet safe way. In addition to Pepper Construction, Richardson, Texas-based Skiles Group received the second-place prize for development of its own app, Smart Safety, which provides field staff and

project administrators with one-click access to site-specific emergency protocols and resources on all active job sites. Dunkirk, Md.-based PATRIOT was awarded the third-place prize for creating individualized treatment units to support both the healthcare industry and patients suffering from COVID19. The association presented Pepper Construction with a $7,000 grand prize during its annual convention in Orlando. Lanham noted that the association created the AGC Innovation Awards to inspire members of the construction industry to craft innovative solutions to pressing industry challenges. Lanham added that the Innovation Award showcases free thinkers within the construction industry to provide solutions to construction challenges we face. 

Consider Daily Maintenance Checks During Winter Season Something as simple as a tarp covering the vehicles will keep the temperatures slightly warmer, adding further protection from the cold, said the Cat dealer.

WINTER from page 1

Preparing your fleet for extreme temps can be a complicated process, and sometimes it’s best left to a professional. A local service provider with a certified technician on staff will make sure proper fluids are used and at the correct levels, points out Fairchild Equipment. “Take advantage of the service technician’s equipment inspections to check the machine for other issues that can be serviced on a single visit,” said the Green Bay, Wis., material handling equipment dealer. Fairchild also suggests working with a provider that offers road service. If bringing equipment into the local shop isn’t an option, road service is a convenient alternative for you and will prove less disruptive to your operation. Worst-Case Scenarios As heavy machinery sales and rental company Wheeler Cat points out, not winterizing your equipment has several dire consequences, depending on how much the preparation lacked. “Don’t let these scenarios apply to your fleet. Properly winterize all your equipment for either long-term storage or use through the winter.” Covered areas protect your heavy equipment from damaging snow, ice and freezing weather. So, it’s best practice to keep your machinery protected from the elements whether you intend to use it over the winter or not. “If you park your equipment outside, you may find yourself needing to dig the vehicles out of snow banks,” suggested a winterization blog post by Wheeler, based in West Valley City, Utah. Something as simple as not changing the oil also can affect your heavy machine during colder months. Oil does not last forever, said the company. “Forget the myth you may have learned that oil cannot wear out. It can. And if you continue to use dirty oil, it will not lubricate your engine as well.” Plus, if you use a high viscosity oil in freezing weather, it will move too slowly and draw more power from the engine, making starting harder and wearing your engine’s components. Not completely warming your equipment’s engine? Beware: Diesel engines should not be operated while still cold, especially in the winter, warned the Cat dealer. Failing to wait for the engine to properly warm to operating temperatures could cause the exhaust valve or the intake to stick. Ice crystals, formed from moisture in the air, can prop open your tire valves when you don’t fill your tires with dry nitrogen. Wheeler noted that an open valve will cause your tire pressure to drop. Also, regular air will lose pressure in freezing temperatures more readily than dry nitrogen. “Tires with low pressure reduce fuel efficiency by making the engine work harder,” according to Wheeler’s blog. If you don’t correctly lubricate moving parts before the winter, rust can infiltrate immobile parts on your machine. Save your equipment and avoid headaches by properly winterizing your heavy equipment, the blog urged. It’s a “significant” undertaking, and one that might require professional help, said Wheeler. Beating Winter Blues There are simple steps you can take to keep both your heavy and compact machinery in working order through the winter and back into the warmer months. Winterizing starts

Diesel engines should not be operated while they’re still cold, especially in the winter. Wait for the engine to properly warm to operating temperatures or either your exhaust valve or intake may stick.

with a thorough inspection of the machinery. Tending to multiple systems is part of the process, noted Wheeler, and how you prepare the equipment will depend on whether you will use it or store it before the spring. “Though the steps needed to ready equipment for storage and use over the winter differ slightly, both processes are critical for maintaining your company’s heavy equipment,” said the equipment sales and rental company. If your company does not operate during the winter, your fleet will need to be prepped for storage. Wheeler Cat pointed out that long-term storage in the cold can be just as harmful to your heavy machinery as using it during the winter. Remove any attachments from the equipment for storage in a separate place at room temperature. Lubricate the accessories and the machinery if they haven’t already been treated. “A high-viscosity lubricant will not drip off your equipment in the cold, and it will coat the parts better than a lowviscosity grease,” according to the blog post Blue Diamond Machinery suggested that contractors should “watch that your tires don’t freeze to the ground, as this can result in tears and drive train damage.” You can prevent this from happening by parking your machinery on raised planks, Reannon Muth wrote in a Blue Diamond blog on winterizing heavy equipment. “We also recommend that you keep buckets and blades on raised surfaces as well.” Next, drain all liquids from the engine, including the fuel. Removing the fuel with the engine running ensures you get all the diesel out. Wheeler also suggested removing the battery and storing it at room temperature to keep it from losing its charge. “If any systems in your heavy equipment store water or fluid, drain those and dry them thoroughly to keep the storage tanks from freezing.” Place a tag clearly labeling each machine as stored and not ready for use, said Wheeler. The labels will prevent someone from inadvertently attempting to take the equipment out before it’s prepared for warmer weather. Cover the equipment, if you have covering, to protect the machinery from dust and scrapes during the winter.

Working Through Cold If you are operating your heavy equipment during the winter season, “you’ll need to exchange a one-time pre-season maintenance with daily and weekly tasks,” said Wheeler. “Freezing weather and ice can take their toll on the diesel engines in your heavy equipment. If you don’t care for your machinery daily, you could pay to replace the vehicles instead. A small amount of prevention will go a long way toward keeping your business running.” Blue Diamond suggested operators check heaters and defrosters before cold weather hits. If you wait until winter to check your atmospheric system, you may find yourself in for an unpleasant surprise, Muth wrote. Make sure your operator confirms that “compartment heaters and defrosters are in working order before the first days of fall and make any needed repairs ahead of time,” she said. Wheeler suggested that during winter, on a daily basis, operators should check the following: Battery: If the temperatures freeze in the storage area, remove the battery and keep it at room temperature to prevent draining it excessively. A warm battery operates much better than a cold one. When temperatures drop below freezing, it’s vital you check your batteries, wires and hoses to verify they haven’t frozen or become stressed due to the frigid temperatures, urged Blue Diamond. Not only will a frozen battery not function, but it’s also likely to explode if you attempt to charge it or jump start your equipment with it, according to the dealer. “What’s more, hoses and wires can become brittle in the cold. To prevent permanent damage, give your equipment ample time to warm up before operating.” Engine starting: Use an engine warmer to warm the engine. The warmer will thaw out the engine block and make it easier to start. Starter fluid will help even more. Before beginning operation, run the engine until it reaches its full operating temperature. Never operate your equipment while the engine is still cold, or the exhaust or intake valves could stick. Air intake: At the end of the day, always check the intake for snow or ice, said Wheeler. In storage, the snow and ice can melt and later refreeze if taken back out. Tires: Clear off snow or ice from the equipment’s tires and park it on planks to prevent the tires from freezing to the ground. And check the tire pressure regularly. If the pressure drops, use dry nitrogen to refill the tires. Fuel: Refill the fuel tank at the end of each day. A full tank has less likelihood of producing ice in it than a partially filled one, according to the blog post. Also, switch to diesel for lower temperatures. Depending on how cold it gets where you operate your equipment, you may need to change from 2-D to 1-D diesel fuel or use additives. “Failing to switch to cold-weather fuel could cause the diesel to gel in the lines, clogging the fuel system and preventing operation,” warned Wheeler. Empty the water separator to keep the water from freezing and causing damage. Preparing before the cold weather arrives is critical to preventing costly damages in the future. It also makes the most of your crew’s time during the winter months.  CEG

MB Crusher Lends Hand in Tight Construction Spaces It’s well-known that working in enclosed spaces multiples problems: it means facing challenges every day such as lack of access routes, little room to maneuver, managing incoming and outgoing trucks, managing materials and protecting workers. As a result of the challenges, time and the costs of labor increase, which puts companies in a difficult position. However, there are available solutions: knowing what they are means opening your eyes to a new way of managing tasks with excellent results and turning expenses into a revenue source. Hard to Access Areas, Limited Maneuvering No Longer Problem The most common challenges on construction sites in enclosed environments are hard to access and have limited maneuvering spaces. In quarries, tunnels, mines and construction sites inside factories or warehouses, managing incoming and outgoing materials are complex. MB Crusher’s attachments enter the tightest places and manage materials directly on site. The results are obvious: reduced waste, zero transportation costs and increasing the yard’s profitability. MB Crusher’s entire range is designed to work even where space is limited because each product attaches to any brand excavator, even mini-excavators, turning them into a powerful crusher. MB Crusher’s drum cutters make it even easier to work in enclosed spaces. Making it the most effective solution to process only the material they needed with precision. Companies equipped with MB Crusher’s units can independently recover and process waste materials, reduce costs and become more competitive, according to the manufacturer. Extracting Materials Without Explosives Another critical point of working in enclosed spaces such as quarries and mines is managing the explosives and the workers’ safety. In these situations, MB Crusher’s

MB Crusher’s attachments enter the tightest places and manage materials directly on site.

units have changed methods and how profitable companies are. For example, in a mine in Albania, extracting iron-nickel happened using explosives, which comes with the costs of the explosives and the safety measures. None of the operators were aware of an equally effective alternative method. By inserting MB Crusher’s units, they abandoned using explosives, and extraction happens with the MB-R700 drum cutter installed on an 18,000 lb. Bobcat 442. A drastic change for the company and also the entire sector. The same attachment has been used in many quarries and mines, solving the problems surrounding using explosives for extraction. Furthermore, MB Crusher’s drum cutters are an effective answer to mill only the nec-

essary material without generating waste material that they need to dispose of. They also avoid creating dangerous vibrations if they work underneath roads, excavations located in cities, or inside industrial warehouses close to other buildings. In Mexico, as a recent example, for them to build a drainage tunnel underneath a busy road, they couldn’t use a hammer since it would have created too many vibrations. However, an MB Crusher MB-R500 drum cutter installed on a mini-excavator solved the job without creating vibrations or cracks in the walls — they only processed the material they needed. Immediate Operational, Economic Benefits The units from MB Crusher’s range present a turning point for organizations working

in enclosed spaces to become faster and economically advantageous. Let’s look at an example of a job in South Tyrol in Italy, where an industrial warehouse’s floor had to be dismantled and redone. By inserting a BF120.4 crusher bucket on the Doosan excavator present on site, all of the inert material was crushed on-site and used to create the new layer for the new flooring. Easy to install and operate, MB Crusher’s attachments transform any material into a resource, even enclosed environments or on construction sites that are hard to access. With its products, MB Crusher has revolutionized the process and turned construction sites into autonomous crushing centers that yield excellent performance and increase profitability, the company said. Rockster R1000S Increases Bavarian Company’s Flexibility In early 2020, Anton Sedlmaier GmbH, from Starnberg in Bavaria, decided to purchase the 33 ton (30-t) Rockster R1000S impact crusher. The first location is a largescale project in the center of Tutzing, where a 6-story Roche Group company building was razed to the ground. With a team of 30 people and 50 years of history, Anton Sedlmaier GmbH is a wellknown address for any demolition and earthwork projects in the area of Starnberg and Munich. It is understandable that the Ehret & Klein planning office turned to the processing specialist from Starnberg when awarding the project in the center of Tutzing. Old Tutzing Era Is Coming to Closure This large-scale project concerns the demolition and preparation of the last Boehringer building in the center of Tutzing. The pharmaceutical company had shaped this part of Tutzing near the train station since the second World War. After taking over Boehringer-Mannheim in early 1998, the Swiss Roche Group also continued to operate for a few years. Roche closed the plant 18 years ago and subsequent attempts to revive it were unsuccessful. In 2019, the demolition of the last building was ordered and a completely new area with clinic and commercial real estate is to be built. Processing Demolition Debris Until February of this year, Sedlmaier rented mobile crushers to process the construction waste. The purchase of the Rockster R1000S with hydrostatic drive and an inlet opening of 37.8 by 28.3 in. (960 by 720 mm) was an important step forward. “Our machine operators are enthusiastic about the new mobile crusher, they praise the easy handling and the good accessibility for maintenance work. We are now much more flexible and efficient in processing demolition debris and natural stone,” said Sedlmaier. The Roche processing project is a test of toughness for the crusher. Sedlmaier’s site manager Markus Falschlunger has now been in Tutzing for a year. “The challenge at this construction site is on one hand the strong reinforcement of the concrete — a lot of iron was used in the construction of the building — on the other hand we are right in the center of Tutzing, where we have to keep the noise level as low as possible. “ The standard and height-adjustable magnetic separator of the R1000S crusher proved to be a valuable aid in the removal of iron parts. If necessary, the fine, earthy material is ejected with the hydraulically foldable side belt. “We mainly produce 0/50 mm final prod-

uct, which is used for the substructure. Because the proportion of coarse and fine material is optimal, the recycled concrete is well suited for road construction since it forms a solid foundation,” said Falschlunger. Machine operator Tobias Poschinger

praised the fully hydraulic crushing gap adjustment of the R1000S: “I can easily set the crushing gap on the display, it is quick and uncomplicated. I also think it’s great that almost all the functions of the crusher can be controlled via remote control.”

Top Service as Important Criteria Not only the crusher itself, but also customer support and after sales play a major role in the construction industry, because downtime is simply too expensive. Due to Schlei & Birkert Aufbereitungungsanlagen Service GmbH, a Rockster dealer of southern Germany, the Sedlmaier team feels to be in good hands. “We can really turn to Schlei and his people at any time for questions and get competent information and support immediately. The training was excellent and the delivery of spare parts also works perfectly,” said Falschlunger. After the completion of the demolition debris crushing project in Tutzing, the crusher was transported to one of the two company-owned gravel quarries. Sedlmaier was extremely satisfied. “The performance with this highly ironreinforced concrete is very good. The crusher is compact and will also be of great support in the gravel quarry, where we want to crush granite to 0/16mm.” Rockster dealer Sandor Schlei added: “With the Rockster R1000S, our customer has purchased a very sophisticated machine. Whether for his Recycling projects or in his gravel works, he can easily transport the crusher and use it extremely versatile.” For more information, visit www.rocksternorthamerica.com. 

As part of the ongoing process to integrate its legacy brands into One Komatsu, the newest drill model and technology was showcased on the Komatsu ZR122 with the new look and branding. This new look will transition legacy brands to the Komatsu brand this year, which includes the P&H 77XR. Designed to increase drilling time, the rack-and-pinion pulldown system reduces the maintenance time required to support the old cable or chain pulldown and the boxer style mast reduces downtime for structural inspections. To help reduce bit change downtime and worker risk associated with a manual changeout process, an advanced auto-bit changer carousel helps to flex into a new hole diameter rapidly so operators can seamlessly adapt the drill pattern to reach peak fragmentation quickly. The one-touch, auto-bit operation keeps productivity going with a five-minute change. Customers can elevate their mine’s productivity by improving drilling accuracy with high-precision GPS through autonavigation capabilities, allowing line-of-sight teleremote operations from up to one mile away. Golden Gate Bridge Utilizes Unique Falsework On Span BRIDGE from page 1

cerns of the permitting agencies with no temporary structures in the flowing water. An engineered bridge removal plan also was required to dismantle the old structure and prevent debris from falling into the river. The work took place near the city of Yreka, a Caltrans District 2 initiative, that also widened existing roads for today’s standards. The bridge is located at the junction of State Route (SR) 96 and State Route (SR) 263. Crews completed the new structure in 2020 and in 2021 realigned the highway to tie it in to the new bridge and removed the old structure. Construction Scope/Challenges Golden State crews focused their efforts on safety, production, quality and meeting all the environmental constraints to complete the project. “Challenges included extremely difficult pile installation due to high water table, loose overburden consisting of sand couples and boulders with 30 KSI bedrock below,” said Lukaszewicz. “Project plan errors in surveying the existing topography would have resulted in construction one of the piers in the flowing river. Incomplete staging plans resulted in the contractor restaging all the roadway realignment work and dismantling the existing structure due to its deteriorated unstable condition. “There was an existing utility that interfered with the pile driving — a 60 KV electrical line that had to be relocated,” he added. “It caused little bit of a delay. The CIDH pile installation was extremely difficult as we had loose soils over the very hard rock, consisting of sand, gravel and big boulders. Once we got through that, we struck bedrock was 30,000 PSI in water — it was the worst combination of everything for pile installations.” Crews had little room work space-wise. “It was extremely tight,” said Lukaszewicz, who praised Caltrans’ Andy O’Sullivan as being instrumental in working through changes for the construction plan. “We had to construct abutments first and then put our cranes on them. That was all we had for footprints.” Safety on the job also was paramount. “We have an in-depth safety program that we implement on all our jobs,” said Lukaszewicz. “We were dealing with live traffic, working at heights and figuring out pick-ups with our cranes. We have a very professional crew who take safety seriously.” Dealing with environmental concerns also were critical. “We had 360 pages of it,” said Lukaszewicz. “There were fish, birds, turtles — you name it. The river is designated as ‘wild and scenic’ and it has a salmon run, which comes under the jurisdiction of the many agencies involved as a cultural resource. A lot of people were concerned about the fishery. We were able to accomplish the job with a zero-take, aided by our means and methods. The impact on the river was minimal.” The new bridge is west of the old one and its location improved turning radiuses and sight distances and lowered the existing grade considerably. “This required moving a substantial amount of hard rock by blasting and excavation,” said Lukaszewicz. Work on the new bridge began in April 2019 and it was completed 18 months later. The construction of the new alignment was delayed due to the weather. “We had to come up with a new staging plan,” said Lukaszewicz, “but working with Caltrans’ Nicole Mallory,

we devised one with the least impact to the traveling public. The realignment was done in a 30-day period with the closure of 263 and one-way traffic on 96 last April. The demolition of the old bridge began last June and was executed by the end of July. “It was challenging due to the river and the fact that it was not built back in 1939 to have that much traffic,” said Lukaszewicz. “It was very deteriorated and our team of engineers determined that a typical dismantling of it would make it unstable, so we came up with a very detailed engineering plan that went really well and that everybody was happy with. Usually, with a concrete bridge, you take the deck off and drop the pullovers. This bridge had six independent spans, so we devised a method to pull over each span independently and we reinforced the existing structure. We built a hinge system and dropped it where we wanted on the ground. Early on, the use of heavy equipment was key. This included a Liebherr LR 1250 crane, a Grove 150 crane and Link-Belt 330LX hydraulic excavators. “We used the Grove on the north side to erect the strengthening elements and the Liebherr on the south side, which was placed further back, to erect the falsework, rebar and all the placing on this construction,” said Lukaszewicz. After setting up the flat locations for the cranes, the first

The project, which involved replacing and removing the current bridge structure at the junction of State Route (SR) 96 and State Route (SR) 263, was successfully delivered in October by Golden Gate Bridge by utilizing a unique falsework system.

step was to build the substructure, place the piles for the abutments and install the thrust blocks, all of which was done in the first season. “We built the substructure, finished in October 2019, with the support from the cranes and then we started the installation of the falsework system for the arch,” said Lukaszewicz. “The next step was to build the falsework for the superstructure, columns and spandrel columns that came off the arch. The superstructure was complicated because when you land an arch, it has to lowered equally. This required us to pour the bridge deck starting from the center of the arch to the spring line. We had two crews working with two Bidwell deck finishing machines and a heavy mixer truck from Siskiyou and Shasta counties supporting the effort.” The concrete arches were cast-in-place. Mountain Ready Mix built a larger batch plant on-site to provide the concrete for the deck pour. “They went above and beyond to ensure that this phase was a success,” said Lukaszewicz. Other key subcontractors were Myers Earthwork for rock removal, paving and grading; Condon Johnson for the micro-pile work; and Pacific Steel Group for rebar. The new alignment, 1/3 mi. on the 263 side and approximately 1 mi. for the 96 side, initially started in the first season of the project when the bridge substructure was completed, but was then put on hold until substantial completion on the bridge was achieved. Myers Earthwork was responsible for the road work. “The 263 side went through a mountain of solid rock and on the 96 side, we lowered the existing road and had to go through the mountain on the north side, which consisted of 35 PSI limestone,” said Lukaszewicz. Golden State’s management team included company President Dave Riccitiello and Jim Banbury, project superintendent. “We plan and execute everything,” said Lukaszewicz. “We have detailed plans and when we execute them, we improve upon them. Our crew members are professionals. They travel with us from job-to-job and they are the best bridge builders in northern California. I work very hard to build a team dynamic and the work we do is very hard and some of it can be considered very dangerous if it is not done properly. Crews and management work together to execute difficult plans.” Peak days had nearly 30 to 40 Golden State and subcontractor employees on-site. A lot of Golden State’s employees live in Nevada and all over California and for this job, they stayed at local hotels and in RVs. New materials brought in consisted of 8,000 tons of concrete, 2,000 tons of steel, 8,000 tons of asphalt and 43000 tons of rock removal tons of earth and rock. The demolition of the old bridge generated 6,000 tons of concrete and 1,000 tons of steel. Other pieces of equipment that were employed included Kobelco SK500 and SK350 excavators equipped with Rammer breakers. “The hard rock tore up our drilling equipment, as did a lot of the earth work,” said Lukaszewicz. “Both GSB and Myers Earthwork had our own field mechanics. We knew the type of work we were doing and brought plenty of spare parts to do timely repairs and stay on schedule.” Golden State purchases and rents equipment from Hammer & Steel Inc. (drilling equipment), Cresco Equipment Rentals, I-5 Rentals in Redding and Tri-West Tractor in Livermore.  CEG

Kostreba Lands Winning Bid On ‘Trailer for a Cause’Auction Felling Trailers Inc. conducted its ninth annual online auction of an FT-3 drop deck utility trailer to benefit a non-profit organization: the Minnesota Fire Fighters Foundation (MNFFF). A winning bid of $4850.99 won the auction that ended at 7 p.m. on the 20th-anniversary remembrance of 9/11, Saturday, Sept. 11, 2021. The bid winner was Joe Kostreba of Sauk Centre, Minn. Kostreba, a local contractor, has participated in previous Trailer for a Cause auctions but never pushed for the winning bid. “This year it just made a little more sense for a few reasons. One reason was for business needs. I needed to replace my aging current FT-3 [2000 model year]. “The second was for personal reasons. When I was about five years old, my neighbor Dave Kane, a volunteer firefighter, was killed in the Arc fire [Noah’s Arc Restaurant in Sauk Centre, now Diamond Point]. I was young, but I still remember the day like it was yesterday, as the procession of cars showed up at the neighbor’s home to notify the family of the tragic accident of Kane and Zabel,” said Kostreba. David Kane and Doug Zabel, both volunteer firefighters for the Sauk Centre Fire Department, passed away when the structure they were standing on collapsed under the heat and stress of a raging fire, Jan. 7, 1985. “The Minnesota firefighters risk their lives every day to try and help everyone they can save, whether it’s fires or accidents they are called to. My wife [Blaine] was an EMT in Sauk for many years and worked alongside many firefighters.” Kostreba watched as the auction started on the 5th of September and was one of the first bidders to jump in on the bidding action. Over the next 7-days, the bidding action continued with 21 bids placed throughout the auction. Joe and his daughter Taylor watched together as the minutes counted down to the end of the auction. “With approximately seven minutes left in the auction, we watched the bid price not moving. We decided with a few seconds left to see if we could win the auction. With 5 seconds left, we entered our bid, only to have the confirmation screen pop-up with about 2 seconds left, prompting us to hit enter again. We were both very surprised that we won and congratulated each other with a high -five,” said Kostreba. Kostreba will be putting the FT-3 trailer to use hauling materials and equipment to and from job sites when needed. About three years ago, he bought the family business, Kostreba Contracting, from his family due to his father becoming ill and not being able to continue operating the business. “I had worked alongside my dad building the business since I was 14-years old. Twenty-seven years later, I’m still doing the same thing I grew up doing, helping families in Sauk Centre and the surrounding communities building new

homes, remodeling projects, and anything they may need to be done. The trailer is going to be very well taken care of, almost too nice to use,” said Kostreba. “The city of Sauk Centre has been a very great place to work and raise our family and operate our family-owned business with my wife Blaine and daughter Taylor.” The 2021 Trailer for a Cause FT-3 utility trailer was painted the signature fire engine red with custom fire engine gold pinstriping and bared the Minnesota Fire Fighters Foundation emblem. Several Felling Trailers’ suppliers joined to support the MNFFF through sponsorship of the trailer build, from lighting to tires and paint. The 2021 Trailer for a Cause sponsors were Trans-Texas, PPG, Dexter, Sealco, Peterson, Industrial Wood, Demco, Pacific Rim and Metal Crafters/Flexco. Felling Trailers wanted to generate awareness about the hidden health dangers and cancer risks firefighters face while serving and beyond. The auction ran for seven days, from Sept. 5 through Sept. 11, ending with Kostreba’s winning bid of $4,850.99. One hundred percent of the $4,850.99 will benefit the Minnesota Fire Fighters Foundation.

About Minnesota Firefighters Foundation After receiving training on the Health Risk to Firefighters in 2016, a small group of individuals felt compelled to do more for their brothers and sisters in the fire service. The founding five members piled into a small room and knew at that time there needed to be more focus on the hidden health and cancer risk firefighters faced. In early 2017 The Minnesota Firefighters Foundation was formed, and its mission is simple: supporting firefighters and their families that have been affected by cancer and other health issues due to their involvement in the fire service. MNFFF’s primary campaign is HOODS 4 HEROES, which educates firefighters on how to protect themselves, along with giving them the tools and equipment to help mitigate the risk of cancer and other hidden health risks. The HOODS 4 HEROES campaign mission is to purchase particulate hoods for fire departments across Minnesota that cannot afford them. New Mulcher Helps Contractor Stack Deck in His Favor Todd Hyatt is familiar with forestry mulchers, having used them on land clearing projects, pasture clearing and around his own property. They tackle brush as well as felled and standing trees, leaving a carpet of mulch in their wake. They are a good “go-to” tool for an aesthetically pleasing project. He also knows that not every job requires the fine grinding that mulchers provide. So, when Hyatt purchased 20 wooded acres in south Louisiana, he wanted an ace in the hole. Hyatt opted for a Fecon FDM74 deck mulcher and an ASV RT-120 Forestry model to clear the Chinese tallow trees, oaks, elms, pines and all the underbrush that surrounded them. He was pleased when he got it cleared in record time, with much lower operating costs. Deck mulchers have been around for years. Armed with rotary blades, they are a good way to mitigate brush, eliminate small trees, and other vegetation management projects. Unlike other deck mulchers, the Fecon is designed and built with “heavy duty” in mind. Strenx performance steel forms the body, making it ideal for the rigors of forestry work. The bearing carrier houses a heavy-duty bearing with an oversized shaft. The beefy bearing easily accommodates the extra blade mass which increases cutting inertia, enhancing performance in thick materials. Hyatt likes how much sturdier the Fecon deck mulcher is than his previous mulcher heads, saying “If you hit a good log, it used to bend the housing [on his previous deck mulchers]. Now it’s built so heavy I don’t have to worry about that.” Anything too big to cut through still isn’t a problem due to the stump-jumper feature, which

allows the Fecon to ride over stumps or other debris without risking bolt shearing. This makes it much easier to clear areas that are unfamiliar and could have large rocks or cinderblocks or other various detritus scattered throughout. Riding over these obstructions saves time and money, especially compared to drum mulchers. When a drum mulcher hits a stump, it can break a tooth, which costs both time and money. Depending on the severity of the damage, the teeth may need to be replaced before it can he run. This downtime can be expensive both in

terms of actual costs, as Hyatt noted that the teeth are not inexpensive, and lost production time. Hyatt appreciates how forgiving this feature can be to users, commenting “If you hear the blade hit, you can back up and ride over it. If you hear other mulching heads hit it’s too late, you’ve already broken teeth.” By eliminating the threat of damage and repairs, the stump-jumper feature makes clearing areas much

faster and more economical. A 2-in. wider cutting area allows Hyatt to cover more ground with each pass, further enhancing his productivity with the Fecon deck mulcher. Serrated brush hooks pull debris in to clear piled material or fence rows faster. Specially designed two-sided blades effectively double service life without having to flip the blade. Easily accessible hydraulic hose connections allow Hyatt to reverse the

cutting direction to use the opposing side of the blade. Hyatt described the Fecon deck mulcher as “Tougher, and more forgiving to its user.” With built-in strength and durability, as well as the ability to ride over anything that it can’t cut, make the Fecon deck mulcher ideal for clearing areas of thick foliage quickly. According to Hyatt, “It doesn’t slow down. Unless you get into something really big, it’s as fast as you’re willing to ride it.” That toughness and durability gave Hyatt the peace of mind to load up his FDM74 and travel to central Texas where he cleaned up a ranch used primarily for recreational hunting. The mountain juniper, cedar, elm and black oak ranged from 3 to 8 in. in diameter, but neither they nor the hilly, rocky terrain were an impediment. It was

hard to determine productivity in acres/day because a lot of what Hyatt was mulching was fire lines and food plots rather than clear cutting or forest thinning. He estimated that the deck mulcher was 1/3 faster than a drum mulcher in actual mulching time, and on this project would be much faster because the rocky soil would wreak havoc with drum mulcher teeth. Hyatt was so astounded at how fast it operated on these projects that he’s got plenty of projects lined up for it. He splits his time — about half working his own land and half contracting out, including a 560-acre family ranch in Westhoff, Texas, where he’ll take the senderos, mesquite, elm and huisache trees from a riverbed. He’s excited at how easy the job will be, saying “It’s going to be a bunch of trees, probably four to six inches big around, and that thing ought to go right through them.” With six integrated tie downs and lift points, Hyatt has no trouble loading and securing it during transport between job sites. Secured to a Big Tex Flatbed Trailer, he hauls it anywhere and everywhere with his Dodge 1-ton truck. Hyatt bought the deck mulcher and the ASV RT-120F from Deep South Equipment in Baton Rouge, La., who he described as “Very knowledgeable and helpful during and after the sale.” Having the right tools in your toolbox can make all the difference in a land clearing project. Hyatt thinks of his Fecon FDM74/RT120F combination as his “ace in the hole” and knows that whether he’s clearing on a pipeline project, under-brushing ranch land for hunting, or cleaning up his own properties, with the FDM74 the deck is stacked in his favor. Four Dealerships Rebrand With One New Name, New Logo Since its establishment in early 2018, National Equipment Dealers LLC has grown to 13 locations across four states. Over the last few years, Four Seasons Equipment located in Texas, MAY-RHI in the Carolinas, Richardson Services 1991 Inc. — recently acquired in South Carolina — and Earthmovers Construction Equipment in Florida, have continued to operate under their original legacy company names. With additional future growth through mergers and acquisitions on the horizon, NED LLC decided to re-brand all the legacy companies under one name, National Equipment Dealers LLC (NED). “This is a challenging endeavor, but we are all very excited about growing our brand under one name,” said Corey Rogers, vice president of marketing of NED LLC. “With this change, we will have much cleaner messaging and improved brand recognition as we continue to grow.”

New NED Logo Part of the rebranding of the NED legacy companies includes a new logo. NED LLC re-designed the company logo with a crisper, cleaner look. “Our new logo is easier to read and will be easier to recognize on our equipment, when seen on jobsites,” explained Rogers. Branding Process NED is in the process of updating the current NED website — nedealers.com — to incorporate new branding, the new logo and additional products represented across all companies. By year end 2021, NED LLC will redirect all other websites to the NED site. Signage and other brand-related changes also are under way and will be updated over the following months. “Everything is the same. It’s just the name. We will continue to provide excellent customer service and products to our customers across all of our locations,” explained Rogers. For more information, visit nedealers.com. 
