At Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska, construction is under way on a $22 million F-35A Lightning II flight simulator facility. The simulator will allow the initial F35 pilots, who arrive at Eielson approximately six months before the first aircraft arrive, to maintain many of their flying currencies and skills. It also enables them to train against modern threats in a highly-realistic environment. In 2015, the Air Force tapped Eielson Air Force Base to become the first operational overseas location for the F-35A Lightning II. In March 2017, an official ceremony was held. “The groundbreaking for the flight simulator is the first major military construction project in the F-35 beddown,” stated 1st Lt. Brett Brunner, the 354th Civil Engineer Squadron F-35 construction project manager chief. “The ceremony is both for this facility and the entire project at large.” “The F-35A Lightning II flight simulator facility groundbreaking marked the beginning of construction projects to support the F-35 mission,” said Kevin Blanchard, 354th fighter wing F-35 program integration office director. “It was attended by the Eielson airmen, the project’s general contractor, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Fairbanks-

Northstar borough leaders.” In addition to the F-35 flight simulator building project, roughly three dozen buildings will be built or renovated, adding more than 420,000 sq. ft. of infrastructure in the overall base. Fiscal year 2017 will include renovations to current hangars and two additional hangars, renovating squadron operations, weapons storage facilities and missile mainte-
nance facilities. “So far, two military construction projects have been awarded,” said Blanchard. “The F-35 simulator building project was awarded to Watterson Construction, and the Munitions Storage Facility project was awarded to Callahan-Watterson joint venture.” Alaska District, USACE, is the Air Force’s construcsee SIMULATOR page 40
RENO, Nev. (AP) Scientists at a Nevada earthquake lab recently tested new bridge designs with connectors they said are innovative and created to better withstand violent temblors and speed reconstruction efforts after major quake damage. University of Nevada, Reno, engineers performed the experiments on a giant “shake table” to simulate violent motions of an earthquake to rattle a 100-ton (91 t), 70 ft. (21 m) bridge model to determine how well it would hold up. The tests, conducted a day after a big quake struck Mexico, shook large concrete columns and beams back and forth for about 30 seconds at a time, displacing some nearly a foot before returning largely to their original spot. Graduate students measured and marked indications of tiny fractures but no major structural damage was observed in the initial review of the experiments. “The bridge has done better than we expected,” said Saiid Saiidi, a professor of civil and environmental engineering who served as the project leader. He’s done related research for more than 30 years. Bridges are already designed not to collapse in earthquakes but often are unsafe for travel after big quakes. He said the designs that were tested employed special types of connectors to link prefabsee QUAKE page 56

Wyoming Transportation Commission...
WTC Awards $30.3M in Highway Contracts in September The Wyoming Department of Transportation will reconstruct 2 mi. of WYO 789 (North Federal Boulevard) in Riverton. The Wyoming Transportation Commission awarded S & S Builders LLC, of Gillette, a $13.9 million contract for the work at its meeting in September. The commission awarded that and 10 other contracts totaling $30.3 million. WYO 789 is a state road that runs through Riverton in Fremont County. WYDOT is doing the reconstruction to improve the driving surface. The last time WYDOT recon-
structed that road was in the 1980s. Besides reconstructing the road, the contract includes sidewalk upgrades, utility work, storm sewer work and new traffic signal installation. The work on the 2 mi. of WYO 789 will complete the reconstruction of the entire road in Riverton. WYDOT reconstructed another portion of that road about five years ago. The contract completion date for the road work is Oct. 31, 2019.
The other contracts the commission awarded included road surfacing work, sign installation, bridge repairs and rumble strip installation. Kilgore Companies, of Rock Springs, was the low bidder on a $7.5 million 6-mi. Interstate 80 eastbound lane surfacing contract between Granger Junction and Green River in Sweetwater County. WYDOT is doing the work to improve the pavement surface. During construction, WYDOT will divert eastbound traffic to the westbound lane. Both directions will then be down to a single lane in the construction zone. The contract completion date is Oct. 31, 2018. 71 Construction, of Casper, won a $2.4 million asphalt patching contract that will take place on various locations such as I-25, WYO 258 and WYO 251 in Converse, Natrona and Platte counties. WYDOT does asphalt patching, chip sealing and crack sealing as part of its road maintenance. The contract completion date is Oct. 31, 2018. New Generation Projects...
Xcel Energy, Other Groups Unveil Colorado Energy Plan Xcel Energy filed a stipulation with a broad coalition of 14 diverse groups, asking the Colorado Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) to approve a process that could lead to $2.5 billion in clean energy investments in rural Colorado, if there is no additional cost to the company’s electricity customers. In order to accommodate cleaner energy generating resources for the state, the proposal also calls for the consideration of the early retirement of two coal generation units in southern Colorado. The “Colorado Energy Plan” proposes a proactive and widely supported electricity generating portfolio to augment the company’s current 2016 Electric Resource Plan (ERP). In addition, the Colorado Energy Plan would only be advanced if the resulting portfolio of resources reduces, or at least does not increase, the cost of energy to Xcel Energy’s Colorado customers. The new generation projects will be identified and selected through a soon-to-be initiated competitive acquisition process, targeting a mix of utility and independent power producer (IPP) owned facilities, with Xcel Energy having a targeted investment of 50 percent of the renewable generation, and 75 percent of the natural gas-fired, storage, or renewable with storage generation resources in the portfolio. Portfolio estimates are up to 1,000 megawatts of wind, up to 700 megawatts of solar and up to 700 megawatts of natural gas. “We have a responsibility to meet our customers’ energy needs. Our customers expect us to provide low-cost power and increase the use of cleaner energy. As the state’s largest utility, it is important to us that we also support rural areas in Colorado, and this proposal’s investment will accomplish this goal,” said David Eves, president, Xcel Energy — Colorado. “The proposal could increase renewable energy to 55 percent by 2026, save customers money, and dramatically

Alaska... Through fall, major roadway reconstruction will continue on Second Street/Glendale Avenue between Kietzke Lane and east McCarran Boulevard.
Rock Boulevard south of Glendale Avenue reopened and the Second Street off-ramp from southbound I-580 closed as roadwork advances on the Nevada Department of Transportation’s Glendale Avenue reconstruction project. On Sept. 6, the off-ramp from southbound I-580 to Second Street closed to traffic 24 hours a day, seven days a week through approximately Sept. 21 as crews reconstructed Second Street in the area. Marked detours will be available. Other freeway ramps have opened after being temporarily closed for construction during recent weeks. On Sept. 7, Rock Boulevard south of Glendale Avenue reopened. The road has been closed to through traffic from Glendale Avenue to just north of Freeport Boulevard since July 7. The road closure helped fast-track installation of more than 2,000 yds. of concrete to create a more durable concrete roadway surface at the heavily-traveled Rock Boulevard and Galletti Way intersections. The closures cut the time of reconstruction in half compared to leaving major areas of intersection open to traffic. Through fall, major roadway reconstruction will continue on Second Street/Glendale Avenue between Kietzke Lane and east McCarran Boulevard. The road will remain open to traffic, but both directions of traffic will be shifted through the road work zone as crews excavate approximately 16 in. of road surface and then rebuild and repave for a smoother roadway. Sidewalk and roadway drainage improvements also will be made. At least one access to each business remains available during business hours, but on-street parking will not be available throughout construction. Motorists are advised to reduce speeds and follow all road work signage. Construction is nearly 50 percent complete on the approx-

Caltrans Builds New Roadway Over Monumental Slide By Chuck Harvey CEG CORRESPONDENT
California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has determined that the best way to repair and ultimately reopen coastal Highway 1 at Mud Creek near Big Sur is to build a road over the massive landslide covering a quarter mi. of the highway. Mud Creek is in the southern portion of Big Sur State Park. Bulldozers and compactors will create a sturdy roadway surface atop the fallen material. Then asphalt will be applied for a new section of highway. Initial work on the project began on Aug. 3 with contractor John Madonna Construction of San Luis Obispo, Calif., about 15 Caltrans workers and 20 support staff on duty. The two-lane road has been closed
since May 20, when the hillside above the highway gave way, dumping more than 5 million cu. yds. of mud and rock onto the highway and the ocean below. It was the largest slide ever recorded along the Big Sur coast. see CALTRANS page 18

The slide cut off northbound travel to much of Big Sur State Park.
The new road will cross over the landslide material. Bulldozers and compactors will create a sturdy roadway surface atop the material.
USDOT Finalizes $629M TIFIA Loan for OC I-405 Project The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Build America Bureau said it will provide up to a $628.93 million TIFIA loan to the Orange County California Transportation Authority to cover about a third of the estimated cost to expand both general highway capacity and add 16 mi. of express toll lanes along Interstate 405. The bureau said the loan is at a 2.91 interest rate with a term of 35 years after substantial completion for the I-405 Improvement Project. As previously reported, the OCTA board voted June 26 to sign final documents for a low-interest loan of about that size under the Transportation Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act, for the authority’s largest construction project. The I-405 is a major and heavily traveled highway in Southern California, a major link between Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties and part of the Federal Highway Administration’s “Primary Freight Network.” It offers direct access to the nearby ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, which comprise the nation’s largest port complex by volume.
The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Build America Bureau said it will provide up to a $628.93 million TIFIA loan to the Orange County California Transportation Authority to cover about a third of the estimated cost to expand both general highway capacity and add 16 mi. of express toll lanes along Interstate 405.
The project the TIFIA loan will help finance will add one new general-purpose traffic lane and one new toll lane in each direction. The USDOT announcement said the new tolled express
lanes will combine with existing high occupancy vehicle lanes to create two express lanes in each direction in the I405 median from SR 73 to I-605. The work will replace 18 bridges and includes construction of new and widened bridges, improvements to the auxiliary lanes, utility relocations, new sound walls and additions to traffic management systems. Backers estimate that in its opening year of 2023 the project will reduce annual vehicle hours of delay along the corridor by two million hours, the USDOT said. The county authority has said the low cost of the TIFIA loan will save it about $300 million over the loan’s life, compared with financing that debt in the regular bond market. Other project funding, the Orange County Register has reported, includes $1.1 billion from “Measure M,” a halfcent sales tax for transportation improvements, plus $89.7 million in state funds and $45.6 million in federal funds. RDO Equipment Holds Grand Opening at Riverside Store
D
oors are open at the new RDO Equipment Co. store in Riverside, a full-service dealership featuring equipment from manufacturers including John Deere, Vermeer and Topcon. On Sept. 13, the team opened the store to celebrate its grand opening, an event that included a ribbon cutting, store tours, and lunch. Store Highlights The Riverside store is at 20 Iowa Ave., in the same footprint as the previous store. The new building’s site was chosen to keep the prime location that offers easy customer access, and plenty of space for parking and equipment. At more than 40,000 sq. ft. of space, it’s one of the top 10 largest RDO Equipment Co. facilities. One of the highlights of the new
store is the addition of Vermeer equipment, parts and service. The former RDO Vermeer location in Fontana moved to the Riverside space to offer customers more solutions under one roof. Led by Riverside team members, the tour highlighted all areas of the new store, including the 3,500-sq.-ft. retail area, as well as offices, small meeting rooms and large conference rooms. Also featured were the 11,000-sq.-ft. parts warehouse and mezzanine, and 30,000-sq.-ft., 18-bay service shop. The Riverside store was built with several special features and unique design choices. Interior finishes are made of low-emitting green materials to improve indoor air quality. A fan system in the shop and parts warehouse continually circulates air through the spaces
without air conditioning and offers cooling to offset the California heat. Along with unique aspects of the Riverside store, the team pointed out some of the hallmarks of new RDO Equipment Co. buildings, including LED lighting, and in the service shop, overhead doors with full-view glazing panels to allow maximum natural light and a drive- through, open air wash bay. Impacting Customers and the Community A customer appreciation luncheon wrapped up the day. Ronald D. Offutt, founder of RDO Equipment Co., and Christi Offutt, chief executive officer of RDO Equipment Co. spoke to the packed luncheon crowd — filled with customers, manufacturing partners and team members.
“It gives me a lot of pleasure to come here and spend time with our customers and team members,” Offutt said. He continued, offering credit and appreciation to the Riverside team for their role in making the new store a success. “This is a dream store. And stores are not possible without a dedicated customer base and dedicated employee base,” he said. “We have people who are innovative, work hard, and truly want to take care of our customers.” Christi built on Ron’s message of gratitude to team members, saying, “Nothing makes me prouder than all the people here today in shirts with the RDO Equipment Co. logo. Your customer-focused commitment sets us apart and is what makes RDO Equipment Co. a company we’re all so proud of.”
Nearly 400 customers, manufacturing partners and team members attended the event. The Riverside store is the 15th RDO Equipment Co. location in the state of California and 77th in the company’s network of dealerships across 10 states. About 90 team members work at the store; roughly 35 of those employees are new to the area, transferring from the former RDO Vermeer store in Fontana. The store currently has open positions and anyone interested is encouraged to visit the Careers page of the RDO Equipment Co. website for details. For more information, visit rdoequipment.com. Caltrans Begins Clean Up on Highway 1 at Mud Creek CALTRANS from page 15
Caltrans expects to have cost details as well as a timeline for reopening the highway by the end of August. Engineers from Caltrans had a big decision to make in how to deal with the monster slide. They considered various alternatives including tunneling through the landslide material, building a structure around the slide or reutilizing the original roadway surface by pushing huge amounts of dirt and rock into the ocean below. The roadway is covered by about 40 ft. of material and the width of the slide is about one-third of a mi. Traversing the landslide was considered a workable, less costly alternative. The new roadway will be realigned across the landslide and will be buttressed with a series of embankments, berms, rocks, netting, culverts and other stabilizing material. Highway 1 is mainly used by motorists in cars and recreational vehicles seeking a more scenic route along the central coast of California. “The highway is not suitable or

very efficient for big-rig trucks, which you do not see,” said Jim Shivers, public information officer of Caltrans District 5. “Smaller trucks can make deliveries to the businesses in the area and of course many RVs use the highway.” “Our staff has been working hard to tackle the weather-related
challenges faced by Highway 1,” said Malcolm Daugherty, director of Caltrans, in a release. “We have made tremendous progress on Pfeiffer Canyon, have opened Paul’s Slide and now have good news on the slide at Mud Creek. Our goal is to reconnect the areas impacted by winter storms as quickly and safely as possible.” Tim Gubbins, district director of Caltrans District 5, agreed. “Our emergency contractor continues working dawn to dusk every day and will continue until we can safely reopen the highway.” John Madonna Construction has broad experience in earth moving and grading including numerous
landfill projects requiring specialized water containment and grading to accommodate proper drainage. Subcontractor Associated Traffic Safety of Atascadero, Calif., is supplying flaggers and spotters. Other subcontractors are said to be on duty at the Mud Creek site. Caltrans recently sent its rebuilding plan to various state, local and federal resource agencies and continues to work with the Big Sur community. As part of the plan to traverse the landslide, extensive bulldozing will be needed to smooth out the surface for the new roadway.
“Graders, loaders and other equipment will need to work at the site extensively to create the subgrade for the new roadway,” said Susana Cruz, public information officer of Caltrans District 5. “In this respect, it will be like a typical realignment project.” Additional equipment includes excavators, motorgraders and dump trucks of various sizes. Once the new roadway is completed, motorists will climb just under 100 ft. from south to north at the site of the mudslide. “The entire section of roadway was lost due to the slide, so all of it will be replaced,” Cruz said. Cruz added that existing rocks will be used to buttress the roadway. “Yes, many are being mined from the body of the slide,” she said. Heavy Winter Rains The slide, which followed a wet winter in the area, adds to multiple problems on the route that has not been fully passible for months. Highway 1 also is known as SR1 and Pacific Coast Highway. Mud Creek is about 2 mi. southeast of the small town of Gorda and 60 mi. south of Monterey and 9 mi. north of the San Luis Obispo-Monterey County Line. The slide cut off northbound travel to much of Big Sur State Park. Big Sur is situated on a rugged stretch of California’s central coast see CALTRANS page 20

During the mudslide, debris fell from as high as 1,000 ft. above the highway, creating 16 acres of new beachfront that now extends 250 ft. beyond the shoreline into the Pacific.

Winter Rains Cause Multiple Problems for Caltrans on Hwy. 1 CALTRANS from page 18
between Carmel and San Simeon. Bordered to the east by the Santa Lucia Mountains and the west by the Pacific Ocean, it’s traversed by narrow, two-lane SR-1, known for winding turns, seaside cliffs and views of an often-misty coastline. The sparsely populated region is known for hiking, camping and beachcombing. During the mudslide, debris fell from as high as 1,000 ft. above the highway, creating 16 acres of new beachfront that now extends 250 ft. beyond the shoreline into the Pacific. In 1983, a slightly smaller slide closed Highway 1 for more than a year. In terms of the current slide, crews have assessed the soil at the site and radar equipment has been used to assess movement of the slide. Crews also used drones to conduct aerial reconnaissance to formulate a strategy for repairs at Mud Creek. The first order of business is to ensure the slide site is safe enough to work on, Shivers said. Prior to the decision to traverse the Mud Creek slide, Shivers reported that some of California’s most breathtaking coastal scenery will be off limits for a year or possibly longer. Mudslides have been a problem in coastal California, especially along the coast and in hillside areas where recent brushfires have stripped away vegetation. A variety of strategies have been tried to reinforce potential slide areas including use of wire mesh, rock curtains, plastic mesh reinforcement, rock-fill buttresses, retaining walls, concrete-filled pile walls and seeding of the hills above roadways. “Most of these applications have been installed between Ragged Point and Monterey,” Shivers said. Ragged Point is in the southern stretch of Highway 1 on the central coast. It is just north of San Simeon and Hearst Castle. Monterey is about 150 mi. north of Ragged Point.

Repairs are planned after a huge landslide buried a quarter-mile section of scenic state Route 1 at Mud Creek on the Central California coast in the southern part of Big Sur.
Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge Meanwhile, work has begun on replacing a SR-1 bridge located about 30 mi. northwest of Mud Creek at the north end of Big Sur. Winter rains and shifting earth caused the original Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge to crack and collapse. Caltrans reports that the new bridge should open in mid- to late September. The Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge project will cost $24 million. Caltrans has been working on an expedited schedule to complete the new bridge on the scheduled date. The original bridge, built nearly 50 year ago, was demolished in May and crews are installing a single-span, steel girder bridge in its place. On July 28, Caltrans announced that the first steel girders for the new bridge were being trucked in from a paint yard near Stockton, Calif. A 15-truck convoy brought the girders to the Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge site. Each truck was escorted by the California Highway Patrol as it carried a 62-ft., 62-ton steel girder. Contractor for the bridge project, Golden State Bridge of
Clearing Paul’s Slide In addition to the huge Mud Creek slide, heavy winter rains led to another landslide called Paul’s Slide, 12 mi. north of Mud Creek. “I have not seen a number about the amount of debris which came down,” Shivers said. But some construction equipment was at the repair site in July. “Other than large trucks and backhoes, I’m not sure about other equipment,” Shivers added. The contractor for Paul’s slide repairs is CalPortland Construction of Santa Maria, Calif. CalPortland Construction has grown to be a major player on the Central Coast of California. Its main focus has become major highway overlays and new construction projects for Caltrans. In recent years the company has applied nearly 250,000 tons of asphalt each year. Projects for Caltrans range from as large as 125,000 tons of asphalt while smaller county, city and private projects vary in size. The company also is no stranger to earthwork and trucking, performing dirt moving projects that have involved 500,000 cu. yds. of material. Federal Reimbursement The Pfeiffer bridge, Mud Creek and Paul’s Slide projects are not eligible for FEMA funding, but each will likely qualify for Federal Highway Administration reimbursement. “FEMA does not reimburse on bridges and the other two incidents occurred outside the funding window, which they created,” Shivers said. Liebherr USA Co.’s mobile and crawler cranes and foundation equipment divisions in the western region. The opening of the Lodi location is the latest development in support of the manufacturer’s rapid growth in the United States under the newly formed mixed sales organization. The integration of the divisional activities allows Liebherr to expand and increase the presence of its diverse product portfolio in the U.S. market and is a tremendous benefit to customers, providing access to Liebherr parts, services and equipment, according to the company. Case Construction Equipment, Sonsray Machinery, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and Team Rubicon teamed up for a heavy equipment operator training and improvement project at the San Diego National Wildlife Refuge. Sonsray Machinery provided four machines — two CX80C excavators and two SR210 skid steer loaders — and Team Rubicon brought in four instructors and nine volunteers from across the United States for the event, which involved classroom instruction as well as practical hands-on training in safety and machine operation. Located on the southern rim of San Diego Bay, the Refuge is an important stopover for migratory birds, and supports a diverse array of natural habitats for a variety of wildlife including rare birds, butterflies and other wildlife that are critical to the area’s ecosystem. In addition to training nine new heavy equipment operators, Team Rubicon also made improvements to an access road, and removed more than 50 tons of concrete from an old dairy complex within the Refuge. For Team Rubicon — an organization that unites the skills and experiences of military veterans with first responders to rapidly deploy emergency response teams for disaster relief — the training preps their volunteers for operating heavy equipment during disaster response deployments, and also makes them eligible to assist the National Wildlife Refuge System on future projects. Team Rubicon has partnered with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to create opportunities to provide heavy equipment training. A key component is Team Rubicon’s partnership with Case, which provides both training and heavy equipment through its dealer network. LAS VEGAS (AP) A long-mothballed, unfinished casinohotel on the Las Vegas Strip has been sold for $600 million, eight years after construction halted on the 63-story tower amid the recession. A partnership led by New York-based real estate company Witkoff bought the Fontainebleau Las Vegas, a hulking bluish tower that was 70 percent finished when construction stopped and has since served as a training site for firefighters. “[The property] is one of the best physical assets in the country, which is one of the reasons we were attracted to it,” Witkoff’s chairman and CEO Steve Witkoff said in a statement. He added that the company wants to “unlock” the property’s growth potential, though he didn’t say exactly what will be the fate of the nearly completed tower on the north end of the Las Vegas Strip. The site near the Circus Circus and SLS casino-resorts, as well as the Las Vegas Convention Center, has been dormant since 2009, about two years after privately held Fontainebleau Resorts LLC began work on the $2.9 billion, 3,900-room project. Gaming Acquisition LLC, bought the property out of bankruptcy in 2010 for $150 million. The property is away from the heart of the Strip and near another halted casino-resort project. Should Witkoff choose to open the property as a casino-resort, its location will influence how quickly it becomes profitable. “Properties that are closer to MGM properties and Caesars properties tend to do better on average daily rates,” said Alex Bumazhny, gambling analyst of Fitch Ratings. “Fontainebleau is a little bit outside of critical mass. SLS ... struggled to ramp up to profitability arguably because of its location.” He added that the success of the property also will depend on how long its owners can support losses until it becomes profitable, which can take years, and whether there’s a hiccup in the economy. “They probably want to open sooner rather than later to catch the current wave of the good economy,” Bumazhny said. tion agent for the F-35 military construction program at Eielson AFB. USACE administers the construction contracts, performs daily quality control during construction and manages the program to ensure timeline and budgets are met to provide facilities for the F-35 aircraft and for the personnel supporting the aircraft and the mission. Monica Velasco, F-35 program manager, Alaska District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. said the elements have been a concern from the beginning. “Due to our unique Alaskan climate, it’s incredibly important to begin construction as soon as feasible in late April or May, in order to get as much work completed prior to winter. There hasn’t been anything unpredictable to the weather. “The biggest challenge with any project at Eielson AFB is the sub-arctic environment, where temperatures can reach -60 degrees Fahrenheit and where the sun allows for only a few hours of daylight during the winter months. Challenges in this sub-arctic condition include limitations on excavation due to frozen ground, which then allows for only a few months to prepare the ground, place foundations, set the structure and get the building envelope constructed so to enclose the facility prior to winter setting in.” Because of the sub-arctic climate and the depth of frost at the northern Alaskan military base, it took a while to break ground for the flight simulator. Following groundbreaking, the main focus during construction was implementing the soil improvements.

At Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska, construction is under way on a $22 million F-35A Lightning II flight simulator facility.
Due to high seismic activity in Alaska, the soil improvements for the flight simulator included excavating, backfilling and performing deep dynamic compaction. Deep dynamic compaction consists of dropping a heavy weight (30,000 lbs.) from a crane in a repetitive pattern in order to densify the liquefiable sands and gravels in order to minimize deferential and total settlement induced by an earthquake. Other construction under way this summer at the base includes an earth-
covered magazine project; and the F-35 program has two more projects — an aircraft hangar and a field training detachment facility. As for the challenges when dealing with multiple construction projects, said Velasco. “There are several projects that are in close proximity to one another and that rely on each other for utilities and other infrastructure. These projects have required close planning and coordination during design, and will continue requiring close coordinasee SIMULATOR page 56

Volvo A60H Artic Truck Makes Its North American Debut In 1966, Volvo introduced the industry’s first articulated hauler — the 10-ton (9 t) DR 631, known as Gravel Charlie. Fifty years and 50 tons later, the A60H marks another Volvo milestone. Built upon the same engineering advancements as its smaller, industry-leading counterparts, the A60H provides the same offroad capability, now with an impressive 60-ton (54 t) payload capacity. This new-to-industry hauler class opens increased production opportunities and cost savings potential not previously possible with smaller articulated haulers or rigid trucks in the 60-ton size class, according to the manufacturer. “The A60H is a perfect fit for contractors who typically run multiple articulated haulers on long-term earthmoving projects. In many cases, customers could expect reduced operating costs by replacing two smaller trucks with one A60H,” said Eric Fatyol, product manager, GPE products at Volvo Construction Equipment. “The A60H could also open up new areas of production for mine and aggregate sites by providing access to areas of the site that were previously inaccessible with rigid trucks. Similarly, the A60H could extend the production season in harsh-weather regions and also eliminate the need for hiring outside contractors to handle overburden work.” True Volvo Versatility Powered by a 673-hp Volvo D16J engine and built upon the Volvo platform, the A60H goes where others can’t. The active hydraulic front suspension, hydro-mechanical steering and high ground clearance at the articulation joint enable the A60H to easily and comfortably navigate severe terrain, and the rotating hitch design makes the articulation joint virtually maintenance-free. Automatic traction control (ATC) and 100-percent differential locks continue to be a competitive advantage for Volvo. The no-slip, no-wear differential locks work in 4x6 and 6x6 drive combinations. This industry-unique design employs the front two axles in full-time, and the back axle kicks in as necessary — allowing unmatched off-road performance while reducing fuel consumption and tire wear. With oil-cooled, wet, multiple disc brakes on all three axles, stopping distance is impressively short — even on steep, muddy gradients, according to the manufacturer.
Volvo Construction Equipment once again reinvents the category of articulated haulers with the A60H — a first-of-its-kind, 60-ton-capacity, fully articulated hauler that invites customers to rethink the way they’re moving material.
New Features Come Standard The Volvo A60H also offers a range of new standard features borrowed from the latest Gseries model updates, each contributing to improved safety, productivity, efficiency and ease of serviceability. Hill Assist is a new safety and convenience
feature that holds the hauler in place on steep slopes without the need to engage the parking brake. The feature automatically activates when arriving at a complete stop on a hill and is disengaged when the operator accelerates. Dump Support System allows the operator to see the percentage side inclination of the truck and set allowable parameters for safe operation. This new feature adds to the already user-friendly dumping process aided by Volvo’s load and dump brake technology with automatic hold and float tipping lever, which provides precise control for faster cycle times. On-Board Weighing now comes standard and is fully automatic. Three load indicator lights alert both the hauler operator and the excavator operator when nominal load has been reached and can warn the operators of overloading. The hauler operator also can see, in real-time, the actual tonnage displayed on the in-cab Contronics display, which also includes a new Econometer feature showing fuel economy in the form of gallon per transported ton, per work cycle for the last 10 cycles. This data is also shared and remotely accessible by the fleet manager through CareTrack, Volvo’s telematics system, allowing for complete payload management and improved fleet utilization. Serviceability improvements include a redesigned belly plate that can be electrically lowered and raised with the same hydraulic lever that is used for the engine hood, which opens to a full 90 degrees for easy, unrestricted access. Another improvement to the A60H is the no-grease tipping cylinders, which are maintenance-free, allowing for greater uptime and productivity. New orange accent colors on handrails, grill step and cab entrance now provide contrast for additional safety. Protected for a Lifetime The A60H is not just powerful and off-road capable — it’s incredibly durable, which is why it’s backed by a Lifetime Frame and Structure Warranty. The A60H’s frame and articulation/oscillation joint are protected for the entirety of the initial period of ownership or for the life of the machine — whichever is less. Further support for the A60H is offered from Volvo’s extensive dealer network, who can develop customized customer support agreements with everything from maintenance plans and machine monitoring reporting via CareTrack and MATRIS, to uptime guarantees and full machine warranty options. Komatsu Introduces HD325-8, HD405-8 Rigid Frame Trucks Komatsu America Corp.’s HD325-8 and HD405-8 off-highway trucks are equipped with an EPA Tier IV Final certified engine and feature increased horsepower and a new Komatsu Traction Control System (KTCS) to achieve improved productivity. These models have payload capacities of 40.3 tons (36.5 t) and 44.1 tons (40 t), respectively. They replace the HD325-7 and HD405-7 models. The new trucks’ Komatsu SAA6D140E-7 engines have increased to a net 514 hp (383 kW). Fuel consumption is down for the HD325-8 by as much as 9 percent, and by as much as 6 percent for the HD405-8, compared to predecessors. Also, access is better, with sloped stairs and handrails in front, to replace the previous ladder configuration. For HD325-8 and HD405-8 machines, Komatsu traction control system (KTCS) is now standard. KTCS automatically applies independent brake assemblies to achieve optimum traction in varying ground conditions. Because the system operates without the need for differential lock-up, steering performance is not compromised, according to the manufacturer. Other new standard features for both truck models include a quiet 78 dB(A) cab, 7-inch, LCD color monitor, dedicated rearview monitor, fast-fill fuel system and a premium heated and ventilated operator’s seat with air suspension. In addition, the tire size for the HD405-8 truck has been increased from 18.00 R33 to 21.00 R33, for extended wear properties. “The updated truck models retained their industry leading steering performance and retarding capacity for maximum production,” said Rob McMahon, product marketing manager of Komatsu America. “The addition of Komatsu’s latest fuel saving technologies and the all-new cab, lower the cost to maximize production and significantly enhance operator comfort at the same time.” Tier IV Final Certified Engine Technology • The powerful SAA6D140E-7 engine provides a gross power rating of 518 hp (386 kW). • The hydraulically actuated exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and variable geometry turbocharger (VGT) ensure precise operation and quick engine response. • Maintenance of Tier IV Final engines is simplified with enhanced monitor panel capability and service features. • KOMTRAX and the monitor panel provide critical information for easy monitoring and key data for production management. • Komatsu diesel particulate filter (KDPF) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) are
designed in conjunction with the engine for efficiency and long life. • More than 98 percent of KDPF regeneration is performed passively, with no action required of the operator and no interference with machine operation. • Power and economy modes allow the operator to optimize the performance required for operation. New In-Cab Enhancements/Features • Air-suspension, high-back, ventilated and heated seat softens machine vibrations for added operator comfort and cast frame members increase strength. • Seven-inch, full color, high resolution monitor delivers a sharp picture and vivid colors, even in harsh light. • Komatsu auto idle shutdown can reduce idle time and save fuel. • Separate, full color, rearview monitor with improved line-of-sight. • Pioneering KOMTRAX telematics system and monitor provide key machine met-
rics, including KDPF status and fuel consumption. Performance information can be collected and sorted by operator ID. • Auxiliary jack and two 12 volt ports. Additional Features/Benefits • New angled front access stairs with handrails are now standard for both sides of the machine. • Tight turning radius with MacPherson strut front suspension. • Hydropneumatic suspension system for a smooth ride. • New Komatsu traction control system (KTCS) automatically provides optimum traction in all ground conditions without operator input. • Komatsu advanced transmission with optimum modulation control system (KATOMiCS) adjusts shifting performance according to demand for a more comfortable ride and reduced material spillage. • Automatic retard speed control (ARSC) automatically maintains a selected downhill travel speed (rather than engine RPM) that is
appropriate for the grade. • Enhanced Komatsu integrated payload meter (PLM) data is available on the machine monitor and remotely via the web. • New ground level accessible battery box for easy maintenance. Komatsu CARE The HD325-8 and HD405-8 are covered by the Komatsu CARE program for the first three years or 2,000 hours, whichever comes first. Komatsu CARE for these models includes complementary scheduled engine maintenance and two complementary Komatsu diesel particulate filter exchanges in the first five years. Komatsu CARE lowers ownership costs, raises resale value and improves equipment uptime and availability. For full program details, refer to the Komatsu CARE reimbursement letter. Mining contractor Barhaul has purchased a new 30.8 ton (28 t) capacity TA300 articulated dump truck, for use in a barite mine near Aberfeldy in Perthshire, Scotland.
With confidence in the investment returns that Terex Trucks’ machines offer, mining contractor Barhaul has purchased a new 30.8 ton (28 t) capacity TA300 articulated dump truck, for use in a barite mine near Aberfeldy in Perthshire, Scotland. Supplied by Terex Trucks’ UK distributor, TDL Equipment, the TA300 has consistently impressed Barhaul with its ability to power through the harshest environments. “Over the years, Barhaul has regularly purchased Terex Trucks’ TA300 articulated haulers, as the company has a very good history with both the product and TDL in terms of our ability to support the product when required,” said John Black, sales director at TDL Equipment. Fitted with a tailgate and reverse color camera, the versatile machine is currently carrying out a number of jobs for Barhaul, one of which involves handling material removed from a barite mine that is owned by the world’s largest oilfield services company, Schlumberger. Heavyweight Mineral Easily identified due to its high specific gravity and derived from the Greek word “barus”, meaning heavy, barite is the naturally occurring mineral form of barium sulphate. Due to its density, the environmentally-friendly material is suitable for a wide range of industrial, manufacturing and medical uses. More than 75 percent of barite is used as an additive for drilling mud in gas and oil exploration — with the USA, Middle East and China as the largest consumers. Not classified as hazardous waste, barite is particularly beneficial to drilling muds as it can be applied to deep, hightemperature wells. Here it prevents damage to the tools used during the drilling process, serving as a lubricant to improve mud displacement and stabilizing high-pressure zones by increasing the thickness of the slurry, thereby averting blowouts. The mineral also has the ability to shield x-ray and gamma-ray emissions, acts as a weighted filler for cloth, paper, plastic and rubber, and used as a pigment in paints; barite is truly unique among its contemporaries. “Barite is an extremely dense material so it requires a robust and reliable vehicle to do the work of moving it around in the mine — it’s not an easy life for any truck,” said Black.
Time-Honored Trust Set to make for the perfect collaboration between machine and mineral, the TA300 is a proven design and has the capability to overcome the most demanding conditions and move material as quickly as possible due to its traction and effective power-to-weight ratios, according to the manufacturer. Created to work harder for longer, the machine offers minimum cost of operation and maximum productivity. With fully independent front suspension as standard, tyre/ground contact is maintained on tough terrain, increasing tractive effort and reducing cycle times, while also providing operators with a comfortable haul. Built in Motherwell, Scotland, the TA300 is mastered by a fuel-efficient five cylinder Scania DC9 engine, which develops gross power of 370 hp (276 kW) and maximum torque of 1,880 Nm. In addition, the transmission retardation system in combination with engine exhaust brake support the fully-enclosed oil-cooled multidisc brakes for enhanced protection of the brakes, resulting in less maintenance and a longer life span for the brakes. Black said: “The Barhaul order for the TA300, which was to replace an existing unit, was delivered straight to the site and is carrying out the work it was purchased for. Alongside the sale coming with a short lead time, Barhaul’s decision to remain with the brand was influenced by the level of quick responses received from the manufacturer and dealer no matter the request. “As is normal business practice, Barhaul was looking at competitor brands but one of the key elements of retaining its business with Terex Trucks and TDL is the excellent working relationship that has been established over the years.” Patrick Bradley, director of Barhaul, said: “We have purchased Terex Trucks’ articulated dump trucks for a number of years and have been very pleased with their performance as well as the excellent aftermarket support provided by TDL — a winning combination.” For more information, visit www.terextrucks.com. Alaska AFB’s F-35 Flight Simulator Due to Complete in 2018 SIMULATOR from page 40
tion by USACE and the multiple contractors once construction commences.” The F-35 flight simulator has a scheduled completion date of September 2018. Earthwork and deep dynamic compaction are complete. “The site was a fairly flat grassy area, with a single birch tree at the location of the building. It was actually the site of a previous building which had been demolished awhile back. There really wasn’t much of a clearing effort on this site. Excavation work took the bottom of the excavation very close to the groundwater level, since Eielson AFB has a fairly shallow groundwater table,” he said. According to Major John Hammett, Eielson F-35 resident engineer, Alaska District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, “There are many definable features of work required to carry out and construct this flight simulator building, including earthwork, foundation construction, structural steel, building envelope, roof construction and interior systems construction.” Approximately 11,400 cu. yds. of clean soils and 3,600 cu. yds. of
contaminated soil were moved during excavation activities. “During earthwork activities, the main heavy construction equipment were bulldozers, excavators, dump trucks and crane which performed the deep dynamic compaction,” said Hammett. “During structural steel placement the main piece of equipment will be a crane. In terms of tonnage, the main materials used in the construction of the flight simulator are concrete, structural steel and concrete masonry units.” For the design team, working on the project has been gratifying and educational. “The architecture’s curved roof and angular canopies are inspired by the form of the F35 fuselage and tail,” said Michael Carlson, principal architect, McCool Carlson Green Architects. “The multi-shaded exterior concrete block walls evoke the mottled coloration of the F35’s composite skin designed to be invisible to radar detection. Bold interior graphics celebrate the F35 and the Air Force’s global mission. “Multi-agency cooperation was essential to the success of the project. Intense work sessions with Lockheed Martin, USACE and
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Alaska District photo
In addition to the F-35 flight simulator building project, roughly three dozen buildings will be built or renovated, adding more than 420,000 sq. ft. of infrastructure in the overall base.
“The North Pole and Fairbanks communities have been extremely supportive as the F-35 program has evolved throughout the last several years, and we look forward to sharing our maturing mission with our broader audience.” Col. David Mineau 354th Fighter Wing
various arms of the USAF assured that the design team fully understood the technical requirements of the facility, while adapting them to the harsh climatic conditions at
Eielson Air Force Base. Carlson said the extremely technical facility houses some of the most sophisticated pilot training simulators in the world.
The project is required to meet LEED Silver sustainability requirements. Design responses included storm water retention, highly insulated exterior walls and roofs, heat recovery ventilation systems and high efficiency LED lighting. Looking ahead, Col. David Mineau, 354th Fighter Wing Commander said Eielson will support 54 F-35s and roughly 3,500 airmen, contractors and their relatives. “We are expecting approximately 3,500 new Airmen and family members to Eielson by the end of 2021. This will include more than 1,200 active duty members with their families. The North Pole and Fairbanks communities have been extremely supportive as the F-35 program has evolved throughout the last several years, and we look forward to sharing our maturing mission with our broader audience. Having this fifth generation aircraft in the interior is going to be an excellent opportunity for our airmen and the community.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s website at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)

University of Nevada Performs Test on Shake Table After Mexico Earthquake QUAKE from page 1
ricated bridge parts, including ultra-high-performance concrete. “Earthquakes by themselves don’t kill people — it’s the structures,” Saiidi said. The elements have been tested on their own but never before combined in a bridge model subjected to realistic earthquake motions, like the 1994 Northridge, Calif., quake. The Sept. 20 test inside the University of Nevada’s Earthquake Engineering Laboratory simulated activity of a quake as large as magnitude 7.5. Some design work by the engineers has been incorporated into a highway off-ramp under construction in Seattle. It’s the first bridge in the world that uses flexible columns and reinforcement bars made out of a metal alloy with titanium that bends and then springs back into shape when quakes hit. Among other things, the innovative connectors allow for prefabricated concrete and other materials to be attached to an existing bridge foundation so as to speed repair and reconstruction Part of the research centers on a so-called “pipe pin” connection developed by the California Department of
Transportation’s bridge designers for use in connecting certain beam interfaces in bridge construction. The pin consists of a steel pipe that is anchored in the column and extended into a steel can embedded in the beam. A gap between the steel pipe and the can enables the extended segment to freely rotate inside the steel can and prevents bending of the protruded segment inside the can. The University of Nevada’s Earthquake Engineering Lab is the largest of its kind in the United States. The latest project is funded by the California Department of Transportation, which currently is developing plans for 10 pilot projects based on the developing bridge connector technology. “This study today is going to allow them to make observations of those designs,” Saiidi said. Wirtgen Develops Next Generation of Slipform Pavers Due to its versatility in inset and offset applications, the SP 60 series slipform paver is the new multi-talent for concrete paving. With its SP 61i, SP 62i and SP 64i models, Wirtgen has developed a new generation of slipform pavers that combines the diverse applications of the globally successful SP 500, with the modern technologies of the next larger SP 90 series. Engine Technology Means More Power As part of its modification measures to comply with new emissions laws, Wirtgen has equipped the SP 60 series with greater engine output. The machines that meet EU Stage 4 and U.S. Tier IV Final emissions specifications have a 241 hp (180 kW) Deutz engine, with about 40 percent more power than the SP 500 (+20 percent at EU Stage 3a/US Tier III). Despite the higher output, fuel consumption is reduced by the Wirtgen Eco mode, which automatically adapts engine output to power requirements. New Concept in Hydraulic Technology More features than ever operate hydraulically in the SP 60 series. Due to a new hydraulic concept, energy is now used much more efficiently, making it available for new equipment options, for example, trimmers and a large delivery screw for offset applications, or the four swivel arms used to switch the machine from transport to working mode faster. The system starts as a basic version, and grows along with the number of modular equipment options selected. Customers save by choosing only the options they want.
Intelligent Systems Control Technology Likewise, the intelligent machine control systems in Wirtgen’s slipform pavers are modern. Interfaces for the Wirtgen Group’s WIDIAG service diagnosis and WITOS FleetView systems support users, as does the optional Paving Plus package. Combined with this package, the swivel arms can actively circumnavigate obstacles during the concrete paving process, according to the manufacturer. The option of hydraulic rotational drives, available for all SP 60 series models, provides even better maneuverability. With hydraulic rotational drives, the 90 degree or 120 degree steering angle of the crawler tracks becomes a major advantage, for example when setting up the machine at a job site. Another new development is the option of choosing between two undercarriage sizes. For professional concrete paving at job sites with unpaved ground, the lanes for the pavers must be stabilized ahead of time. However, the larger crawler tracks exert less contact pressure per unit area, reducing the pressure on the ground, thus giving the slipform paver the stability it needs. This in turn has a positive impact on the quality of the paving results. Synergies Between Series Apart from integrating the latest technologies in the development of the new SP 60 series, Wirtgen also adapted userfriendly operation and synergies of the SP 90 series to the SP 60 line. Uniform Operating and Control Concept Various features make the machines both simple and flex-
ible to operate: a walkway that now extends across the full width of the machine for the first time, plus a standardized operating and control concept like that in the SP 90 series, comprises a central control system and four additional local control systems as standard. Intelligent interfaces support the plug-and-play connection of additional options. For example, remote controls can be connected to each of the crawler tracks to simplify and speed up setup of the slipform paver, such as the positioning and zeroing of the crawler tracks and swivel arms. Inset and Offset Mold Systems Like the modular system for the SP 94i and SP 92i, customers can now choose between different slipform systems for inset paving. The slipform modules are fully compatible with the SP 90 series. The SP 64i (four crawlers on swivel arms) and SP 62i (track steering) can thus pave concrete in widths of up to 20 ft. (6 m) and thicknesses of up to 18 in. (45 cm) or more on customer request. Even widths of up to 25 ft. (7.5 m) are possible if the machine is equipped with electric vibrators (without DBI). Also available are various offset molds and a variety of typical offset options, such as trimmers, different conveyor belts or augers. The three- or four-crawler version of the SP 61i can slipform medium to large concrete profiles to the left or right of the machine. Contours of almost any shape — roadway edging, concrete safety barriers, water gullies and paths up to 12 ft. (3.6 m) wide — can be produced cost-efficiently and in high quality. Due to their increased stroke, the lifting columns can now be raised up to 44 in. (110 cm), and have 17 percent more power than in the SP 500. This gives the user much greater flexibility, particularly in tight job site situations, for instance when lifting a slipform for a concrete safety barrier. Due to its higher power reserves, it can now handle heavier offset slipforms to expand its range of applications, according to the manufacturer. SP 60 Series: Link Between Inset and Offset Pavers With the new SP 60 series, Wirtgen has expanded the variety of applications in its class of machines for widths of up to 20 ft. (6 m) (inset paving) and increased the range of offset applications. The SP 60 series rounds out the high end of the offset line, comprising the SP 15i and SP 25i. In terms of inset pavers, it bridges the gap between the small and the mid-range models in the SP 90 series, with paving widths up to a maximum of 31 ft. 2 in. (9.5 m). For more information, visit www.wirtgengroup.com/america.
The new SP 60 series from Wirtgen offers flexible solutions for premium inset and offset concrete paving.

Neal Manufacturing’s Generation IV pumps for retrofitting asphalt trucks easily handle high aggregate loads and feature simple maintenance steps. Neal also significantly modified asphalt truck spraybar designs, incorporating a pair of synchronized 6-ft. spraybars for the highest levels of efficiency and production.
Neal Manufacturing, a division of Blastcrete Equipment Company and a leader in asphalt pavement maintenance equipment, has launched its new Generation IV pumps. The pumps offer improved durability as well as enhanced spraybars and require less frequent routine maintenance than their predecessor, resulting in greater uptime and productivity. Road pavement maintenance contractors also save money since they can retrofit their existing asphalt trucks with the new Neal pumps Gen IV rather than purchase a new truck. “Customers are continually seeking ways to increase productivity, and once again we listened,” said Jim Farrell, Blastcrete CEO. “Our Generation IV pumps not only check all the boxes on our customers’ wish lists, but they also set the bar on aggregate load. No other pump handles more aggregates and larger aggregates than the Neal Generation IV pump.” Neal Manufacturing designed the Generation IV pumps with heavy-duty features, including robotically welded pump housings and industrial-grade hydraulic cylinders for extreme durability and longevity. These components offer enhanced reliability and last 50 percent longer than parts on the previous model, which means less downtime associated with rebuilds. “Most pumps in this industry last around 30,000 gallons before a rebuild is needed,” Farrell said. “We’ve had our first customer
hit 300,000 gallons on our Generation IV pump and it’s still going strong.” The Generation IV pump also comes with Neal’s new filtration system, which is 60 percent more compact than the previous system, more efficient and easier to maintain. The system’s compact filters weigh 98 percent less than the previous filters when full, eliminating the need for a crane during filter changes. Neal also designed the filtration system to give contractors fast and easy access to the filters, making routine cleanings more manageable, according to the manufacturer. Neal installs the system with dual spraybars rather than one. Each spraybar is synchronized with one 100-gpm Generation IV pump. The pumps and spraybars work together to provide optimal efficiency and output on road pavement maintenance projects. Gen IV pumps also offer enough volume for larger orifice tips to all but eliminate tip plugging with aggregates. To ensure its customers know how to properly operate and maintain the machines, Neal offers free training seminars at its Anniston, Ala., location. All machines are tested under load before being shipped to customers. For more information, call 770/830-1282 or visit www.nealequip.com. Vögele’s New Super 1700-3i, 1703-3i Pavers Feature ErgoPlus3 The 8-ft. (2.4 m) paver segment is of central importance to many road construction companies, because with these machines they can cover a wide range of applications, from small municipal job sites to highway construction and rehabilitation. With their strong performance and a uniquely compact design, the Super 1700-3i and Super 1703-3i pavers put Germany-based Joseph Vögele AG at the forefront of technology in this field. They also integrate the practical features that make the “Dash 3” generation of SUPER pavers synonymous worldwide with modern road pavers — most notably the intuitive and ergonomic ErgoPlus 3 operating concept. Pavers in the 8-ft. class are road construction machines that are designed to achieve maximum performance both in confined conditions and on highway job sites. What may sound like conflicting objectives has led Vögele’s design engineers to a future-oriented solution. The result is the new Super 1700-3i tracked paver and Super 1703-3i wheeled paver, ultra-modern machines that are compact but powerful, and thus meet the highest demands, according to the manufacturer. The Super 1700-3i and Super 1703-3i integrate many advantages that pay off under
demanding operating conditions. For example, the material handling concept that effectively counteracts thermal and mechanical segregation by such means as its cleverly designed receiving hopper, ascending conveyors and hydraulic augers, the height of which can be adjusted by 6 in. (15 cm). Maximum Ease of Operation With the Intuitive ErgoPlus 3 Operating Concept For Vögele, however, design means much more than just meeting the demands of construction companies and customers. Every Vögele development focuses above all on the user, as evidenced by the ErgoPlus 3 operating concept. It encompasses an ergonomic paver operator’s platform with numerous intelligent details, such as a hardtop with an extendable sunshade and comfortable seats that swing out to the side. The heart of the ErgoPlus 3 system is the operating consoles for the driver and screed operator. All functions are arranged here in logical groups, push-buttons support reliable operation even when wearing work gloves, and the backlit color displays make it easy to clearly read current settings, even at night or in bright sunlight. Strong Performance:
Ready to Give Their All A paver that has to master a variety of construction projects must be designed for the maximum required level of performance. For the new 8-ft. pavers, combined with the Vögele front-mounted extending screed and hydraulic bolt-on extensions, this maximum is at 19 ft. 6 in. (5.95 m). Strong performance, even when operating at this maximum paving width, is provided by a liquid-cooled 4-cylinder Cummins diesel engine, which even functions reliably under extreme climate conditions. The engine has an output of 173 hp (129 kW) at 2,000 rpm. When working in ECO mode, which is sufficient for most applications, the engine runs at a maximum of 1,700 rpm, further reducing noise emissions and fuel consumption. Laydown Rates of up to 770 Tph The entire material handling system of the Super 1700-3i and Super 1703-3i also is designed for high output, starting with the extra-large receiving hopper with a capacity of 14.3 tons (13 t), which supports the easy and rapid supply of mix from the trucks. Even a truck hitch is available. High-powered, separate hydraulic drives on the con-
veyor and auger deliver an optimum head of mix in front of the screed in every paving situation: They support high laydown rates of up to 770 tph (700 t/h). To transfer this performance onto the road, both pavers have outstanding traction. For the Super 1703-3i wheeled paver, customers have a choice between a 6x4 and 6x6 drive. Stability Combined With Variability Vögele views the paver and screed as a single system, and closely coordinates the two during development. This is evident in the combination of the Super 1700-3i and Super 1703-3i with the front-mounted VF 500 extending screed. It features extremely high stability for maximum evenness and great variability. With the ErgoPlus 3 screed console, the screed can be adjusted infinitely variably and rapidly in a range from 8 to 15 ft. 6 in. (2.45 to 4.75 m), or with bolt-on extensions to 19 ft. 6 in. (5.95 m).
