Embodied carbon is the sum impact of all greenhouse gas emissions of a material throughout its life. Concrete uses the highest amount of embodied carbon, followed by steel, then ceramics. Replacing concrete with a material such as fly ash can cut down on embodied carbon on a job site.
The coronavirus pandemic has changed a lot about how the construction industry operates these days. It’s driven crew members further apart from one another. It’s also clogged the flow and hiked the prices of construction materials. But, it’s propelled sustainability to a place of higher priority on job sites. The timing couldn’t have been better.
“In the midst of the global pandemic and economic crisis, there was also a notable shift toward reversing decades of damage and a renewed focus on addressing climate change,” said Bob Lester, president and CEO of DuraSeal. He believes it has put builders under a microscope for sustainability practices. They’ll now have to prove to customers and investors that they take the future of our planet into considersee SUSTAINABILITY page 38

Industry Hails Senate Passage of Historic Infrastructure Bill The U.S. Senate passed the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act Aug. 10 by a wide bipartisan majority vote, 69-30. Nineteen republicans joined all 50 democrats in passing the bill, which now will head to the House, though that chamber may not take up the bill until fall, after its August recess. Construction industry associations are lauding the milestone legislation, which will, if passed by the House, allocate $1.2 trillion for roads, bridges, rail, transit and the electric grid. Here are the statements released by industry associations so far: AEM “Equipment manufacturers commend the U.S. Senate for passing a bold and bipartisan bill that will make a transformational investment in our nation’s infrastructure. The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act will create nearly 500,000 new manufacturing jobs over the next three years, including more than 100,000 high-skilled, family-sustaining jobs in the equipment manufacturing industry. Investing in our infrastructure also will help us respond to our biggest challenges in ways that improve the quality of life for all Americans, reinforce our global economic standing, and protect our planet,” said Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) senior vice president of government and industry relations Kip Eideberg. “We applaud the steadfast leadership and bipartisan work of the Senate negotiators and committees to reach agreement through a collaborative and transparent process. Senators Kyrsten Sinema and Rob Portman worked tirelessly to steer the bill through the Senate and overcome a myriad of obstacles, and we are grateful for their dogged focus on bipartisanship. The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act is not only a once-in-a-generation opportunity to rebuild our nation’s infrastructure, but an opportunity to restore our economic competitiveness, enhance equipment manufacturers’ ability to meet the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century, and improve the lives of all Americans. We urge the House of Representatives to put policy ahead of politics and pass this bill as soon as pos-
sible. “For years, equipment manufacturers have the led the charge for a historic investment in our nation’s core infrastructure needs. The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act not only reflects many of our industry’s policy priorities but is also proof that members of both parties can work together for the benefit of all Americans.”
partisan, spending bill. The last thing Washington should do is hold a muchneeded, bipartisan infrastructure bill hostage to partisan politics. Delaying action on the infrastructure measure will hurt the economy and deny workers opportunities to start high-paying construction careers. It is time to put people back to work instead of paying them to stay home. That is why we are urging the House to quickly pass the bipartisan AED infrastructure bill and send it to the “AED commends the U.S. Senate’s President for signature.” approval of the Infrastructure Investment & Jobs Act. NAPA “This bipartisan bill represents a giant step forward in bringing greater access and mobility to the American public, brings our highways and roads to good condition, sparks ongoing innovation in the asphalt pavement industry, and secures good-paying jobs for hundreds of thousands of American workers, not to mention improves their safety while on the job,” said Audrey Copeland, NAPA’s president and CEO. “NAPA thanks the President and the Senate, especially those negotiating in good faith on behalf of the American people to pass a bipartisan infrastructure funding bill in a timely manner, enabling much-needed construction and maintenance for America’s critical highways, roads, and bridges,” said James Winford, NAPA 2020-21 chairman. USW “The USW commends the bipartisan work of the U.S. Senate in passing a badly needed infrastructure bill. Our nation’s critical infrastructure is long past due for significant upgrades, and this bill is an important step toward both making our communities more secure and creating millions of good, family-sustaining jobs,” said United Steelworkers (USW) International President Tom Conway. “USW members from across every corner of our union already provide the essential building blocks of a modern infrastructure, from the steel that goes into our bridges, to the pipes that carry our water, to the fiber optic glass that keeps us connected and much more. “A comprehensive infrastructure investment that draws on the goods and services American workers supply will promote widespread job growth and economic opportunity. USW members and their families will further benefit from this investment as their workplaces and communities become safer and more efficient. “As this bill moves to the U.S. House, we cannot let the momentum falter. We urge Congress to continue working together in overhauling both our physical and social infrastructures until they finally meet our modern needs.”

Case and CNH Industrial employees volunteered during the week of Aug. 2 in support of a variety of construction projects.
Case Construction Equipment employees are volunteering as part of Racine Habitat for Humanity’s first ever “Women Build” project — a Racine homebuilding project drawing particular attention to housing inequality and the challenges faced by women who are first-time homebuyers. Each home is priced at fair market value, and loans are interest free with mortgage payments targeted to be below 30 percent of the homeowner’s monthly income. “We are committed to supporting more affordable housing opportunities, and fully support diversity, equity and inclusion in our communities,” said Athena Campos, CNH Industrial Foundation board member, and also head of market development, Case Construction Equipment. “We see the Women Build project as something that is extremely beneficial for Racine, and critically important in building strong and resilient communities that support family growth and development.” The CNH Industrial Foundation is pre-
senting sponsor of the event, and Case and CNH Industrial employees volunteered during the week of Aug. 2 in support of a variety of construction projects. “Single women can pay up to two percent more for their homes and sell them for up to three percent less than single men due to implicit bias and prejudice built into the homebuying process,” said Grant Buenger, executive director, Racine Habitat for Humanity. “Our projects ensure affordability regardless of gender, and protect women from paying higher costs for their homes. Our homeowners start their home ownership journey with no deficit and gain the strength, stability and self-reliance needed to care for their families.” “The support of the CNH Industrial Foundation, and CNH Industrial and CASE employees makes all of this possible,” said Buenger. Whitfield Quickly Climbs Corporate Ladder at MB America As Regan Whitfield sat in her office at the MB America Inc. headquarters in Reno, Nev., she reflected back on her short yet impactful journey as she climbed her way up the company ladder. What started out as a career as a telemarketer of MB Crusher, the Italian manufacturer of crusher buckets, four short years ago has now turned into the prominent role of CEO, a title she earned in January 2021. Whitfield currently works out of the Reno-based office, however, her journey to this role actually began more than 6,000 mi. away in Italy. “I was initially hired as an assistant for the American branch for MB Crusher, which is the main company headquartered in Italy,” Whitfield said. “In that position I would say I was a telemarketer. I would assist the American sales team as much as possible, remotely, working from Italy.” She notes most of the staff in Italy is comprised of women of different backgrounds and cultures. “They give women the opportunity to grow at every level,” she said. “Just seeing that opportunity given and just the chance to try my own thing, that’s definitely
what inspired me.” Whitfield worked for two years overseas before getting the call to come back home, when she was asked to work as the sales director in 2019. Due to her hard work and dedication to the company, she succeeded in that role up until her most recent promotion to CEO. “I was at the right place at the right time,” Whitfield said. “I moved to a small town where the headquarters of the company are located, and was looking for a new career and they were looking for an American citizen that also spoke Italian that could work as an assistant Regan Whitfield for the branch.” All the stars seemed to have aligned to begin her career path with MB. Her experience in Italy, academic background and enthusiasm for the industry was exactly the type of credentials MB was looking for in its hire for the U.S. branch. “I had the opportunity to learn the traits of
his job, and I had this beautiful opportunity to learn about the construction industry in the U.S., but from the European standpoint” she said. “Being immersed in a multicultural environment where I was exposed to people from all nations — and working for this company that stands for recycling on the job site — I was able to visit job sites, attend trade shows, even doing the telemarketing, being able to speak directly with customers to understand their point of view. How are they dealing with the dayby-day hassles of a construction site?” Whitfield credits her passion for the construction industry from her experience at MB Crusher. “Being able to help customers perform their jobs under budget, within their set deadlines, while respecting the environment, gave me a view of things that I didn’t have before.

From the beginning, I knew I wanted to take on a very big role in this industry. I definitely seized the opportunity once I got in.” Filling Big Shoes “There are challenges, of course,” Whitfield said of being a woman in the construction sector. “Never any that I had a problem dealing with. But if you are a woman and are slightly younger than the average CEO or higher person in this industry, it’s definitely getting the trust from your customers or trust from your employees that you know what you are doing and are prepared for the role.” That said she believes that her many accomplishments and growth in the company speak for themselves. So she encourages other women to follow a similar career path and push on regardless of adversities. “I would definitely suggest it,” Whitfield said. Younger women should find the courage to join the team. It definitely builds character.”

Six Seemingly Small Ways to Make a Big Jobsite Impact
When both excavator operators and truck drivers are logged in to the system, a notification alerts the excavator operator when there is a truck available for loading nearby. During the loading process, the excavator measures the weight of the load to the most accurate degree and only once the goal weight is reached, is the truck driver told to drive to its specific destination.
Connected solutions are getting smarter by the day. While you are working hard on the job site, hundreds of thousands of data points are doing their own job quietly in the background to allow you to work more safely, efficiently and sustainably than ever before.
Volvo Active Control boosts digging accuracy allowing jobs to be completed up to 45 percent faster.
Operator coaching gives operators of Volvo’s L110H to L260H wheel loaders realtime information so that they can better understand how their actions influence output.
Electric machines may be the face of our net-zero future, but when it comes to a more sustainable way of working, the real heart of a construction site is the connectivity that is filtering the numbers, pumping out vital information to every part of the site and keeping operations flowing smoothly. Being part of this digital ecosystem is not only a vital tool to achieving our goal of building a better world, by unlocking efficiencies right across the value chain, but also allows for more effective communication in our individual roles. We are only just scratching the surface of what technology can achieve, but let’s look at some of the most recent innovations significantly contributing to increased safety, uptime and fuel efficiency. 1: Prevent downtime with virtual realtime tech support To diagnose and resolve potential machine issues even faster than before, Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) is enabling dealer field technicians to connect directly to their back office product specialists, as well as Volvo product experts and engineers, through live augmented reality video feeds. Via a real-time tech support app on their mobile phone, field technicians can initiate an interactive video call with their dealer back-office staff and invite a Volvo product expert and engineer, if required, to provide more expertise in diagnosing and resolving
an issue. Preventing frustrating downtime for the customer and multiple visits to the job site for field technicians, this new support speeds up fault-tracing, minimizes travel and gets the machine back on the job much sooner. 2. Reduce transport emission with efficient loading As part of a new digital service called efficient load out, trucks and excavators are now able to communicate more effectively with each other on the job site, increasing the efficiency of their work flow and therefore reducing transport emissions. After successful field tests with construction company NCC, a first for this type of service, it proved possible to secure between 96 and 100 percent load utilization for each transport, compared to the typical 87 percent. Data shows that 350,000 tons have been excavated and transported in 11,000 trips during the pilot run. The connected process helped reduce the number of trips by 1,600 — and it’s expected to save around 8,000 transports once the whole project is completed. When both excavator operators and truck drivers are logged in to the system, a notification alerts the excavator operator when there is a truck available for loading nearby. During the loading process, the excavator see TECHNOLOGY page 62

Springs Road. In addition to the challenging construction, the DSB-Geneva Rock joint venture had to navigate an intricate array of government entities who gave oversight to the project. Key project team members included U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highways Division, Central Federal Lands Highway, U.S. Forest Service and Wasatch County. While not a project requirement, the contractor opted to create a CAD-based model, which was utilized in the excavation and grading equipment. On the Scenic Drive section, where no roadway design was provided, this model allowed the finished roadway to be reviewed before it was constructed. By using this process, the contractor identified several areas that could use slight adjustments to improve final roadway smoothness. The scope of the project consisted The Cascade Scenic Drive and Cascade Springs Road project created a serpentine road that allows of rehabilitating and paving 5.3 mi.
A bird’s-eye view of the Cascade Scenic Drive and Cascade Springs Road near Midway, Utah, revealed scenic grandeur that drew thousands to view the changing colors and majestic vistas. For the drivers, however, the experience was less pleasant. Sections of the road were made up of dirt and so steep that drivers’ tires would spin before catching hold and inching up a 12 percent grade at 8,000-ft. elevation. Blind curves and steep drop-offs were common along the drive. In addition, snow in the winter and other weather loosened rock, which would tumble down the mountainside and end up in the roadway. A joint venture of DSB Construction and Geneva Rock Products, based in American Fork, Utah, took on the $13.6 million project to match scenery with safety on Cascade Scenic Drive and Cascade drivers to enjoy safely the beauty of a scenic drive.

Looking at Construction Industry Trends in Concrete Paving By Seth Ulmer SPECIAL TO CEG
From new technology and safety enhancements to shortages in the workforce and supply chain, the construction industry is consistently evolving in response to developments and challenges in the marketplace. Concrete paving is no different. Just as contractors have been perfecting the art of placing and finishing concrete for years, their businesses are shaped by the market conditions around them. Concrete equipment has evolved as well, and new developments provide great solutions for contractors looking to respond to industry challenges and trends. Let’s take a look at some of the biggest questions contractors facing in the concrete paving industry today. What trends are impacting the concrete paving industry? The concrete industry — like many others — is facing strong demand while also experiencing limited access to equipment and raw materials. Concrete contractors have more logistical limitations than they have had in the past, one being yardage limits on concrete from the plants that produce it. Contractors must often wait weeks to access concrete, while in the past they could schedule it within a few days. This requires contractors to be on top of their game when it comes to scheduling and efficiency. It’s becoming even more important for concrete contractors to work with efficient standardized equipment that can expand the amount of yards poured they can complete within their limited time slot. Additionally, equipment has increased in cost and availability has become a challenge. Concrete contractors are looking for manufacturers that can ship quickly and equipment that can expand their capabilities and reduce their costs with minimal maintenance and downtime. This is one of the reasons Curb Roller Manufacturing has introduced its new Lynx roller screed system. With connectable pipe sections, the screed is versatile and can handle a variety of pour widths without needing to purchase specific pipe lengths. This can be a big cost saver with the rising cost of aluminum. It’s also easier and less expensive to transport because the pipe sections can disconnect to reduce the overall length, allowing a contractor to carry it in the back of a standard pickup truck or on a pipe rack. How can contractors address workforce shortages? Advancements in concrete equipment provide ideal solutions for contractors who are impacted by labor shortages. Simply using equipment that is intuitive and doesn’t require in-depth training can help contrac-
tors accomplish a high-quality product with less experienced crews. Roller screeds, for example, reduce the expertise that’s often required with concrete labor. Because the roller screed rides on predefined rails or forms, it gives the supervisor or foreman on a crew the ability to ensure the job is being done correctly to achieve a flatter finish. As long as the screed is running on both of the screed rails or form points, a uniform flat surface is almost guaranteed. Other methods, like vibrating or wet screeds, require higher supervision because they can be difficult to operate and tend to produce inconsistent results when operated by less experienced crew members. With equipment that is adjustable, convenient and easy to operate, contractors also can take on more jobs than they may have previously. With the right equipment, contractors can react quickly to what they are seeing in the market and broaden their horizons through mechanization rather than needing to hire additional employees. What safety advancements are being incorporated into concrete paving equipment? Roller Manufacturing’s curb roller One trend related to safety is that Curb CM4000, a single-operator machine for shaping contractors are turning to smaller, concrete, reduces the labor of shaping curb and manually operated concrete equip- gutter pours, allowing crews to complete work ment. Many job sites aren’t up to twice as fast as manual methods or face released entirely when it’s time to forming. do the concrete work — there are other contractors, subcontractors and trades- tors looking to purchase new equipment as people working on other aspects of the job at well as those who need parts for repairs. the same time. The ability to use smaller Curb Roller Manufacturing has invested in equipment produces a safer work environ- the supply chain and still has the ability to ment in highly congested job sites. An area of safety Curb Roller Manufacturing has focused on is reducing operator fatigue. Equipment is designed to work in the standing position, which is easier on an operator’s back, knees and arms. This also is another advantage of roller screeds, in addition to the curb roller. Most screeding platforms are drug across a surface and use sheer force to move the concrete. Curb Roller’s equipment cuts and moves the material with a spinning motion, which leaves the operator less fatigued. Finally, manufacturers are incorporating safety enhancements related to the specific type of machine. For example, battery operated screeds can have increased safety during transport with a portable design that removes access to the power source when folded, as well as by reducing onsite cords and hydraulic hoses while in operation. How are supply shortages impacting The new Lynx modular roller screed from Curb Roller Manufacturing concrete paving equipment manufactur- system removes the need for purchasing dediing? cated pipe lengths to offer easy adaptSupply shortages are impacting contrac- ability for a multitude of pours.

match strong demand in the market. It has seen some contractors leveraging its equipment when their larger equipment breaks down and they aren’t able to have it repaired in a timely manner due to the inability to access parts and labor. By using smaller machines to supplement their equipment lineup, contractors can keep projects moving even when they experience equipment malfunctions. With potential approval of the infrastructure bill on the horizon, what impact do you anticipate for the concrete paving industry? Infrastructure work requires a high level of accuracy and consistency. It’s important for contractors to use equipment that is designed to help them ensure a high-quality product. Concrete contractors should look for shaping equipment that is designed to accurately meet concrete shape specifications while reducing the time and labor needed for projects. This also is a great time for contractors to diversify their business. With the right equipment, contractors can make a relatively small investment to be able to self-perform on a broader scope of work. Contractors that are more heavily invested in other areas, such as asphalt, can expand into concrete work to meet infrastructure demand without needing to hire a subcontractor. It’s also likely that more dollars will go toward handling solutions for water sources, including ditches and flumes that are made of concrete. Contractors can benefit from unique equipment solutions for these niche projects that handle water placement and movement. These pours are often handled manually or with a large machine, but companies like Curb Rollers provide solutions that can make this safer and much less labor intensive. Steep Drop-Offs Make for Challenging Construction CASCADE from page 23
of Cascade Springs Road and 6.8 mi. of Cascade Scenic Drive, beginning at State Route 92 (Alpine Scenic Loop Road) and ending to the east at the entrance to Wasatch Mountain State Park, approximately 4 mi. outside of Heber City, Utah. “The unpaved section of the road was the most challenging, but also was a place where we could improve drivability and safety the most,” said Chris Robbins, project manager of DSB Construction. “Using the 3D modeling showed us the best place to realign the roadway. In some places, we realigned it 20 feet from its old location. This helped us to move forward efficiently and also helped us track the quantities of materials we would have to use.” Building the new road involved much more than just paving. “We rebuilt the slopes in four different spots,” said Robbins. “Some spots had dangerous drop-offs, which the joint venture team helped fix by adding shoulders as well as safety features like guard rails. In other areas, the team had to remove part of the cliff, so the paving equipment could manage the curves of the pavement. Building the new road also required blasting rock to remove it from where the newly aligned road was supposed to lead.” A subcontractor anchored chain mesh on certain cliff faces to catch any rocks dislodged in the future that could endanger drivers. Creating Two-Lane Roadway The first phase of the project, the 5.3 mi. of Cascade Springs Road, required workers to transform the path from a beat up, narrow, dirt road to a safe two-lane pavement. During the second phase, the Geneva Rock team pulverized the 6.8 mi. of Scenic Drive and used the crushed fragments of the old road to form a strong aggregate base. In total, both section of new road required 30,000 tons of an aggregate base and 30,000 tons of fresh asphalt on top. Workers paved the new road with two lifts of 1.5 in. of asphalt for a total of 3 in. of asphalt. The asphalt mix was a standard Federal Highways composition, using limestone as the aggregate. The unusual nature of the project forced special safety precautions. “Because the road was so narrow with steep drop-offs, we gave our truck drivers hand-held walkie-talkies
and numbered the curves,” said Mike Summers, project manager of Geneva Rock. “This enabled the drivers to tell the other drivers which curve they were on to avoid collisions. Our safety manager conducted regular site inspections with safety meetings held on-site to address concerns.” The two-year project began with earthwork first and included installing culverts to divert the rain and snow away from the roadway, again increasing safety for the drivers. Truckers hauled the asphalt from Geneva Rock’s plant located in Draper. The completed project drew rave reviews. Dallin Koecher, executive director of Heber Valley Tourism, Economic Development, said, “Now that Cascade Springs Road has been finished, it provides effortless access to Heber Valley. In the past, people sometimes didn’t travel it if their vehicle didn’t have high ground clearance. Many people didn’t
want to drive on a dirt road. Because of that, they would miss seeing some of the beautiful spots in this area. My family has taken this new road many times and we enjoy the smooth travel. The Wasatch Mountain State Park and Cascade Springs areas are beautiful. Now they are easily accessible to many more people.” Robbins looked back with satisfaction at the two-year project completed in spring 2021. “Driving the new road for the first time was amazing,” he said. “The road is exponentially safer than it was before. The job was one of the most challenging and gratifying projects I have done in my 25-year career in construction.” The major subcontractors for the job included QC Testing for quality control; Rock Supremacy for anchor wire mesh; B Jackson Construction for pulverizing; Diamond Tree for tree removal; B&K for guard rail; Express Environmental for erosion control; and Overman Concrete for concrete. Experts Urge Sustainability to Gain Competitive Edge SUSTAINABILITY from page 1
ation. That goes for contractors as well. “To remain competitive in the construction market, owners must adapt,” said Lester, in an AGC Constructor article on a sustainable approach to construction. Rajeev Mittal, a managing director of software developer Autodesk, has a similar perspective. In his mind, the pandemic allowed sustainability to gain “some unexpected traction.” Mittal wrote for LinkedIn that broken supply chains proved how vital localization was in achieving business continuity. “With many raw materials becoming impossible to source, indigenous businesses accelerated innovation in local, sustainable alternatives,” he explained. “The construction sector also witnessed a surge in the interest for 3D printing, generative design and prefabrication.” All considered to be more sustainable options, he added. “Climate action is everyone’s responsibility.” Lester maintained that with more frequent uneven weather patterns and increased temperatures due to climate change, builders are approaching new projects with climate resilience in mind. “As engineering improves, construction companies should continue staying up to date on methods to build for the long-term that will withstand extreme weather conditions,” he stressed. “This will reduce the number of repairs needed on a project and, in turn, the fuel consumption and waste that comes with these fixes.” He suggests using high-quality products specifically tailored for each project to minimize emissions and decrease carbon footprint on a job site. “When an asphalt job is done well, it will decrease the need for larger, more expensive repairs in the future,” he explained. “With this approach, excess emissions from unneeded jobs are virtually eliminated, not to mention client satisfaction is improved.” Green Approach Lester’s first suggestion is to prioritize the sustainable materials allocated for a project. For example, choose high-quality asphalt, additives, crack fillers and pavement sealers. Avoid going straight to materials that may be cheaper but are worse for the environment. Better materials “not only protects employees, it is better for the environment,” he added. Talk to your suppliers. “There are many ways to obtain greener materials as well. Start by speaking directly to your suppliers to figure out how and from where they’re
sourcing their products,” suggested Lester. “If you’re ordering in large quantities or know other businesses who buy products from the same supplier, you may be able to convince your supplier to work with more sustainable partners.” Working with local suppliers also can reduce emissions as a result of shorter transports to your job site. In a webinar, Charlie Cichetti, co-founder and CEO of Sustainable Investment Group, gave a list of 10 steps companies can take to “green up” construction sites. Obtaining green materials was high on the list. “This one may seem like an obvious point but using green materials for both permanent and temporary structures at a jobsite is necessary for creating a green building,” he said. He urged site owners and contractors to “go above and beyond on finding cost-effective yet rapidly renewable materials.” Choose recycled materials over items without recycled content, even focus on green materials for temporary materials used during construction, suggested Cichetti. How materials are used matters. Cichetti commented that using prefabricated or preassembled pieces in a project can be environmentally friendly. Many times, a project owner or contractor will bring in a surplus of materials to ensure crews have enough supply to complete the project. “Using prefabricated materials can reduce this waste because the piece is delivered whole, preventing the need for extra resources,” he noted. Preassembled pieces can also reduce carbon emissions in addition to being more cost-efficient, since they require a single shipment only. But potentially most important, noted Cichetti: Using these prefabricated materials instead of assembling pieces onsite can reduce the risk of injury and ensure crew members’ safety. Lester believes construction managers must also ensure their crews are knowledgeable about working sustainably. He suggests recommending ridesharing to staff to reduce transmission emissions. “You could also help organize a ridesharing system for your employees to reduce transportation carbon emissions while getting to and from a work site.” In the same vein, Cichetti pointed to preferred parking for electric vehicles and HOV lanes for carpooling. “Why not use these same incentives for employees traveling to a job site?” posed Cichetti. “Providing people who participate in these alternative transportation methods with closer and more accessible parking spaces can help to reduce carbon emissions by cutting down on transportation-related emis-
sions on the job site.” Lester suggests making your machinery a friend of the environment by using it wisely. He noted that instead of allowing equipment to run nonstop to reduce downtime between tasks, green construction sites reduce equipment usage time to save energy. Clean up your site. Lester also noted that job sites by nature can produce a large build up of waste. “One way to ensure the project is more environmentally friendly is to dispose of waste properly.” Rethink what you’re hauling away from the site. “Many materials that might be considered waste can actually be recycled or reused in future projects,” he pointed out. Recycling and reusing can actually save
To obtain greener construction materials, start by speaking directly to your suppliers to figure out how and from where they’re sourcing their products.
your business money and time on a future project. “Consulting with a waste removal service can also aid in ensuring your site is removing waste in the most efficient way possible,” he added. Cichetti believes tracking job site waste electronically is vital for maintaining a green construction site and diverting some of this waste. “Completing a waste audit can help to show where waste is going and how waste management can be improved.” Universal Rewards Cichetti sustainability webinar participants heard him talk about greening-up in terms of the global LEED green building rating system, but his ideas and suggestions could be beneficial for any job site. He suggests performing an audit of utility usage on the construction site. He considers it vital for knowing where major cost sinks and carbon sources are on site. “Additionally, logging information about fuel and gas is important as it has a larger footprint than other utilities on a job site.” He believes that following jobsite best practices can help to green up any construction site. As an example, Cichetti pointed out how LED temporary lighting can not only reduce the amount of electricity used on a
project, but can be transferred from project to project to reduce costs. “Furthermore, putting timers or sensors on the lights can increase these cost and sustainability benefits,” he added. Other best practices for sustainability can include just providing reusable water bottles to the crew or team; having compostable containers/plates/utensils as well as a compost bin; creating and growing a garden for projects with long timelines; and improving signage for dumpsters and sorting materials. “These are all examples of simple and cost-effective changes that a green team can implement to greatly reduce the carbon footprint of a construction site,” said Cichetti. Virtual meetings came in with the coronavirus pandemic and stayed. So many people working remotely and communicating via video conference has actually helped reduce carbon emissions by cutting down on travel, he observed. “Of course, some site visits will be essential, but for those that aren’t, virtual meetings can help to reduce carbon emissions as well as cut down on time while still sharing information.” He pointed out that video conferencing can even be used to look at equipment or data as a team without everyone having to travel to the project site. Number one on Cichetti’s list of steps companies can take to “green up” is learning about embodied carbon. Embodied carbon is the sum impact of all greenhouse gas emissions of a particular material throughout its life cycle. It is responsible for 11 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. Cichetti believes that between now and 2050, embodied carbon is projected to account for almost 50 percent of total new construction emissions. He also believes by that 2035 we will see a shift of emphasis onto embodied carbon instead of operating carbon, which is focused on efficiency. For example, concrete uses the highest amount of embodied carbon, followed by steel, then ceramics, he said. “Therefore, replacing concrete with something like fly ash can cut down on embodied carbon on a job site.” Lester, of Dura-Seal, believes that in the long-term, sustainability practices will continue changing due to regulation and innovation. “But construction companies that adapt early on will attract customers who want to work with partners who have a proven track record,” he said. “By kickstarting your company’s sustainable construction methods in 2021, you’ll gain a competitive edge for years to come.” CEG

CNH Industrial Reports Record First Quarter of 2021; Up 37 Percent From 2020
ROMCO Equipment www.romco.com
CNH Industrial reported first quarter consolidated revenues of $7.5 billion (up 37 percent compared to the first quarter of 2020), net income of $425 million and adjusted EBIT of Industrial Activities of $545 million (up $693 million), with strong performance from all segments yearover-year. Industrial Activities net cash was $0.6 billion as of March 31, 2021, with free cash flow seasonally negative by $0.4 billion. “Our robust start to 2021 reflects both elevated demand from our end markets and the impressive performance of this entire CNH Industrial team,” said Scott Wine, chief executive officer. “We overcame unprecedented supply chain challenges, rising commodity costs and the persistent impact of COVID-19 to deliver solid revenue growth and margin expansion, also above Q1 2019 performance, which testifies to the commitment, drive and ingenuity of our global workforce. “Consistent with our emphasis on customer and dealer satisfaction, we made new technology investments in Monarch Tractor and Augmenta and are excited about the innovative products and services we will bring to market. All our businesses and brands executed well, and we were particularly encouraged by the strong results Agriculture delivered. And with our refocused efforts on the spin, the outperformance of Iveco and our On-Highway business was timely. With healthy momentum in our markets, agile and improving execution across our businesses, and an
ambitious but achievable strategy in place, the CNH Industrial team is well-positioned for the rest of the year and beyond.” General improvement in market demand and in customer sentiment reflected increased economic activity globally and stronger commodity prices. CNH Industrial said it remains cautious about the future impacts on its end-markets and operations of restrictions on social interactions and business operations to limit the resurgence of the COVID-19 pandemic. Rising demand is adding pressure to the supply chain, requiring diligent coordination to keep its production at desired levels. Adverse market trends in raw materials (particularly steel), freight and logistics costs have impacted product cost performance in Q1. Increasing input costs are expected in Q2, and pressure is likely to continue throughout the remainder of the year, the company said. The company’s order book in Agriculture more than doubled year-over-year for both tractors and combines, driven by strong growth in North America for tractors, and in South America for combines. Construction order book was up year-over-year in both Heavy and Light sub-segments, with increases in all regions. Truck order intake in Europe was up 96 percent year-over-year, with light duty trucks up 95 percent and medium and heavy-duty trucks up 101 percent.
ARTBA Redesigns Its Website to Spotlight Safety Training Toolkits, Video Resources The American Road & Transportation Builders Association Transportation Development Foundation (ARTBA-TDF) has redesigned its website to spotlight the educational accomplishments of the children of fallen highway workers, emphasize critical safety training toolkits and video resources, and showcase the faces and achievements of industry leaders. “The ARTBA Foundation’s programs and services highlight the many impacts of strong federal transportation investment,” said HNTB Director Paul Yarossi, who serves as the Foundation’s chair. “With the new website, we aim to put a human face on our scholarship students and the industry professionals receiving our valuable safety training.” The site’s content has been consolidated into four major areas, is easier to navigate and features enhanced use of digital media. It also offers users an easy way to make a tax-deductible donation. Among key topics covered: • Scholarships & Awards. Established in 1999, the Lanford
Family Highway Worker Memorial Scholarship Program provides posthigh school financial assistance to the sons, daughters or legally adopted children of highway workers killed or disabled while on project sites. The site features testimonials from some of the students about how the program has helped them. Nearly $700,000 in scholarships have been awarded to 202 students nationwide since the fund’s inception. The awards section includes three different honors that recognize women leaders in transportation design and construction, and contractor safety program excellence. • A revamped Safety Center provides training and information to improve the well-being of roadway users and workers on transportation construction project sites. It has a catalog of safety training/certificate courses and events, empowering users to find training materials, videos, a class or event they’d like to attend, and then schedule or register from one convenient location. • The Transportation Development Hall of Fame, launched in 2010, honors individuals or families from the public
and private sectors who have made extraordinary contributions to U.S. transportation development over their lifetime and demonstrated exceptional leadership and innovation. There is a picture and short video about each inductee. • Leadership Development. The Industry Leader Development Program (ILDP) provides rising industry leaders with a solid understanding of industry economics, how transportation is funded and financed and how to become more politically engaged to help shape transportation policy. The ILDP is held annually each spring in conjunction with ARTBA’s Federal Issues Program and Transportation Construction Coalition Washington Fly-in. More than 800 professionals from more than 200 industry firms, state contractor chapters, and public agencies have completed the program. The website was developed by a team of ARTBA and ARTBA-TDF staff, led by Senior Digital Communications Specialist Justin Russell. For more information, visit www.artbatdf.org.

InSite Software Prepares Students for Real-Life Modern Construction Sites InSite Software’s Elevation earthwork take-off and GPS modeling software is now part of the Southern Utah University (SUU) curriculum; its adoption is expected to better prepare students for the modern construction site. The software is now being used in three courses that are taken by students in the university’s Construction Management, Civil Engineering and Engineering Technology programs. InSite Software’s design and features are a fit for the university’s Estimating and Bidding course, which covers three important aspects of estimating and bidding: • Efficient calculations to perform A screenshot of InSite Software’s elevation tool. Contractor Adds Additional Bridge for Mobility35 Program Construction crews from the Dan Williams Company are well on their way to completing a crucial project that will largely benefit Texas and surrounding areas. The project — overseen by the Texas Department of Transportation — involves replacing the existing two-way bridge at I-35 and Ronald Reagan Boulevard (Theon Road) with two new one-way east and westbound bridges. Construction began on June 17, 2019, and the finished product should be delivered in November/early December of this year. The project, part of the overall Mobility35 Program, is taking place in the city of Jarrell (Williamson County), and has seen the completion of the 242-ft. long eastbound bridge, while work is continuing on the westbound bridge. Each bridge will accommodate one travel lane, a bike lane and a 6-ft. sidewalk. Crews also are realigning the road with CR 311 in order to connect to the newly constructed bridges. “Lack of mobility on I-35 threatens the economic livelihood of Texas,” said Diann Hodges, TxDOT’ Southwest communications director. “With more than 92,000 vehicles traveling on this segment of I-35 each day, this project will improve mobility, safety and connectivity for all modes of transportation along I-35.”
By Irwin Rapoport
CEG CORRESPONDENT
Construction Details The project is based on three construction phases. Phase I (eight months), included setting up the work zone, installing temporary signage and the start of construction for the eastbound bridge. Phase II, which is ongoing, includes the construction of the eastbound bridge, which was opened to the public last June, and upgrades to the north and southbound I-35 frontage roads, which is occurring now. Phase III has crews constructing the westbound bridge, which should be complete by late 2021. “The contractor performed as much work as possible without impacting traffic on the existing Ronald Reagan Bridge,” said Hodges. “They also worked simultaneously on the new eastbound bridge elements, as well as traffic detours, for future construction phasing.” Dan Williams Company worked around the clock to demolish the existing bridge structure that was built in the early 1960s.
Crews demolished the existing bridge structure that was built in the early 1960s.
“The overall bridge demolition took two days to complete,” said Hodges. “They utilized equipment to break the old deck and rail down into bite size pieces, and used protective mats with equipment below to protect the integrity of the roadway.” The project is all about phasing, which had construction of the eastbound bridge begin in spring 2019. “Due to the new vertical profile of the proposed eastbound bridge, traffic was detoured for approximately a week until bridge header build ups were constructed in order to put traffic on the new structure” said Hodges. “Currently, two-way traffic is on the new eastbound structure, while the contractor continues constructing the new westbound bridge, as well as other roadway improvements in the area.” Space was not an issue for Dan Williams Company crews, who were able to use TxDOT right-of-way on either side of this portion of I-35, which has two lanes in either direction and a shoulder on each side; a concrete median barrier separating traffic adjacent to the ROW was a site used to store

materials. Some of the road improvements are occurring on the gently-sloped ROW, which had excavators and dozers prepping the site. This element involved creating temporary dirt road to permit equipment to reach the bottom to support the bridge construction operations. Peak days have nearly 20 construction workers on-site, with local and regional subcontractors pitching in. The tallies for the amounts of materials that were generated via excavation and demolition and for new materials that are being delivered on-site, are still being finalized. Additional equipment includes various loaders, miniexcavators and pick-up trucks. Dan Williams Company purchases and rents equipment from regional and local dealerships. Binkley & Barfield Inc. designed the new bridges. “The project involves the construction of two bridges where only one existed,” said Kyle Russell, TxDOT’s assistant Georgetown area engineer. “This required the design team to align the roadway with the new eastbound bridge. And because bridge heights were increased, there was levelup work on the frontage roads.” There have been some traffic impacts due to the work. “We appreciate drivers being patient during construction,” said Hodges. “Demolition of the existing bridge required lane closures on I-35. Beam sets will also require mainlane closures.” Project Background The project’s development was funded by the Williamson County Road Bond Program and the $12.3 million construction cost is funded by TxDOT and the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization. “These much-needed improvements will make it safer and easier for all modes of transportation in a growing area of Williamson County,” said TxDOT Georgetown Area Engineer Bobby Ramthun at the groundbreaking ceremony. Williamson County Judge Bill Gravell Jr. agreed: “These overpass improvements will continue to make Williamson County an amazing and safe place to live.” “The I-35 at Ronald Reagan Boulevard project is a crucial link in Williamson County’s long-range transportation plan,” said Williamson County Commissioner Valerie Covey. “It is vital to the safety and mobility of a fast-growing area within the county.” CEG

Ditch Witch All Terrain Directional Drill Ups Productivity To enhance utility contractors’ productivity while drilling through hard rock, Ditch Witch has introduced the AT32 all-terrain horizontal directional drill (HDD). The newly designed mid-size drill replaces the AT30 and provides greater power and easier system operation for increased operator efficiency and profitability, according to the manufacture. The AT32 features 4,200 foot-pounds (5,694 N·m) of outer rotational torque and 1,200 foot-pounds of inner rotational torque — 29 percent and 50 percent more, respectively, than its predecessor — to help contractors stay productive on the job. With 32,000 lbs. of thrust and pullback, the AT32 provides the power and stability necessary for efficient installations through tough ground conditions, according to the manufacturer. The drill is powered by a 155hp Cummins Stage V diesel engine that meets European emissions standards for a cleaner job site. Further improving productivity downhole, the AT32 features a new rod loading system that gives operators the ability to carry 450 ft. of AT drill pipe on board — 30 percent more than the AT30 — and manually insert additional sticks of pipe when running low. In addition, a higher-powered fluid
pump helps contractors get the most out of their machine by providing 40 percent more fluid flow to help operators stay productive on longer bores with larger diameters. It also allows for better efficiency with less wear and tear on downhole tooling, according to
the manufacturer. “The AT32 is in a class of its own,” said Jeff Davis, Ditch Witch HDD product marketing manager. “It fills a gap in the mid-size HDD market, bringing full-size power to the job site without the full-size footprint. The

result is a more accessible, compact and versatile machine that provides boosted productivity on a variety of rural and urban job sites.” The AT32 follows the same modern design evolution as the latest Ditch Witch directional drills to enhance operator comfortability and ease operator use. The consistent design also makes it easy for current customers to step into the machine and instantly be familiar with its controls, features and operator platform, which boosts uptime. The drill also comes with Ditch Witch’s Orange Intel Fleet Management System. This system delivers centralized fleet and machine information, maintenance indicators and critical performance insights to help operators more efficiently and proactively monitor their fleets. In the coming months, Ditch Witch plans to release the JT32, a direct replacement for the current JT30 model. Drill operators will notice many of the same improvements found in the AT32, such as more power and increased operator comfort in a compact footprint for job sites with softer soil types. GPR for Utility Locating Offers Safety, Revenue Benefits Residential and commercial inspectors, plumbing and utility contractors, and electricians are finding the use of ground penetrating radar (GPR) provides a host of safety, efficiency and revenue benefits. Rather than relying solely on the national 811 call-beforeyou-dig phone number to avoid unintentional digging into an underground utility line, general contractors, subcontractors and inspectors are adding GPR units to their locating toolbox and integrating them with other locating tools to enhance accuracy on the job site. GPR Technology Addresses Wider Needs In the past 20 years, GPR utility locating equipment has been more readily adopted by surveyors and engineers. Already accustomed to deploying electronic equipment during the construction process, surveyors and engineers successfully used GPR to augment the 811 process. In more recent years, engineers and project managers for subsurface utility engineering (SUE) contracts began routinely specifying that contractors do more to prevent unknown problems from buried underground utilities. GPR service providers established a niche serving electricians, plumbers and contractors tasked with establishing utility locations. Now, with many powerful, high quality and lower cost utility locating GPR equipment, inspectors, electricians, plumbing and utility contractors are asking why they are paying to use GPR equipment when they can purchase a unit and do it themselves. Utility Locating Tools — 811 System, EM, GPR Before contractors begin their projects, they utilize the 811 system to get the approximate location of all public utilities by marking them with spray paint or flags. Making that call technically satisfies a contractor’s legal responsibility. Nonetheless, many believe that the 811 system is simply not adequate — the safety implications of hitting a gas line and the expense of idling their workforce has driven them to be more proactive in identifying underground utility lines. Most utility locators use an electromagnetic (EM) line
standard is GSSI’s UtilityScan system, released in 2017. UtilityScan was originally designed for municipalities, electrical contractors and utility installers, but has since been adopted for use in environmental and archaeology applications due to its size and cost.
The trend in the GPR utility world has gravitated towards the use of small, portable and inexpensive units.
locator to check for active utilities. Electric lines are harder to trace with GPR than EM, making EM much quicker and easier to use than GPR. While EM is faster, its positioning is not as accurate as that of GPR, which can provide horizonal and vertical position within a couple of inches. These two methods complement each other, since GPR works better for non-metallic objects and EM for metallic objects. If both tools indicate the presence of a pipe, it provides a higher level of confidence. GPR Technology for Utility Location, Depth That Won’t Break the Bank The trend in the GPR utility world has gravitated toward the use of small, portable and inexpensive units. Leading this
UtilityScan Features UtilityScan is the smallest utility locating GPR system on the market, making it very simple to deploy. Weighing in at only 34 lbs., the UtilityScan is built for quick assembly, scanning and break down. When folded down, the system can fit in the back of a small vehicle. The compact size makes it extremely portable and easy to maneuver around obstacles on busy streets and construction sites. One key feature of UtilityScan is the robust wireless antenna tested for rugged job sites. UtilityScan incorporates GSSI’s HyperStacking technology, which has proven to increase depth penetration in challenging soils while also providing high near surface data resolution. UtilityScan is rugged, built to withstand any job site around the world. This system is IP 65 rated, making it the right tool to handle rain, snow and muddy conditions, according to the manufacturer. Another feature of UtilityScan is that it can be equipped with LineTrac, which helps locate specific power sources situated underground, including AC power and induced RF energy present in conduits. LineTrac has coils that detect power radiated from electrical cables, combined with GPR radar into a single box. This feature lets users produce an overlay on the radar data that represents the presence of AC power and/or induced RF energy present in conduits. UtilityScan then integrates the EM and GPR readings and produces the image on the screen. UtilityScan uses a wireless tablet-based system with a bigger screen, better viewing experience, and a simplified Android app-based user interface (UI). Perhaps the biggest shift into mainstream adoption has been the ease of use. Using a modern, user-friendly interface means operators need less technical experience to collect and interpret data, leading the way to faster onboarding than previously available.

Yet, while rules between European and American cities differ, metropolitan cities globally all have the same needs: that of growing vertically by replacing energy-consuming, structurally obsolete buildings by erecting higher, eco-friendlier, anti-seismic and extraordinary skyscrapers. Because in Europe explosives are banned in most densely populated urban areas, Despe decided to create an innovative, safe, eco-friendly and swift solution for the controlled demolition of urban skyscrapers: TopDownWay, a modular self-descending machine that can be adapted to suit the requirements of all types of structures to be demolished. It is an intelligent containment system as it retains all the material generated by the demolition works within the structure (glass, rubble, debris, noise, vibrations, dust and sprayed water). TopDownWay allows operators to work simultaneously on the three floors it occupies, in which it is possible to carry out different operations at the same time, such as the dismantling of the façades, the demolition of the floor and the removal of debris. As the work progresses, the platform descends in a controlled manner until it reaches zero level, and the building has been completely demolished. Assembly and disassembly of the structure takes place in situations of total safety for the environment and very swiftly: the different parts of the TopDownWay are assembled on the ground, hoisted with a crane and then assembled directly on the top of the skyscraper. After completing the demolition work, the structure is dismantled and disassembled. There are many advantages when using the TopDownWay system: • Improves safety for those who live in the city, safety for the surrounding buildings and monuments, safety for the roads, safety for the employees working at great heights and safety for the environment.• • Improves speed — using the example of a building of 25 floors, Despe’s system can be assembled in 20 days and in three months has completed the demolition. measures the weight of the load to the most accurate degree and only once the goal weight is reached, is the truck driver told to drive to its specific destination. There also is significant value in being able to access all load data through the cloud based portal — allowing for convenient monitoring to ensure the project delivers on time. And without the need for administrators to manage this process, it allows for a significant cost saving. 3. Automated grading for double the productivity The perfect grade is in reach with an ingenious machine control system that automates boom and bucket movements to achieve the exact depth and angle at the touch of a button. Volvo Active Control boosts digging accuracy allowing jobs to be completed up to 45 percent faster. With single-lever grading, the arm speed is manually adjusted by the operator while the machine automatically adjusts boom and bucket movements to maintain an even grade and create the desired shape. The steer-by-wire solution also can easily set swing fence, height limit and depth limit to avoid contact with side obstacles, over-
head obstacles such as power lines, and underground hazards such as pipes and cables. All of which not only helps operators be more productive behind the wheel, but also makes construction sites that much safer. 4. Stay on top of fleet management It’s easy for fleet managers to become overwhelmed by the mass of data being produced by modern construction machines. What good are all these numbers if it’s not easy to make sense of them and take actionable insights to improve the work environment? Volvo ACTIVE CARE has been rolled out globally to proactively take on the burden of monitoring and reporting machine health, freeing customers to get on with the job in hand. It is an intelligent telematics service that bundles together the monitoring of machine health and the provision of weekly reports that together help reduce downtime. Remote analysis delivers multiple benefits, including catching problems before they become failures and helping smooth service scheduling. By knowing what the problem is, dealer technicians need to make fewer trips to the customer site and arrive with the right tools, parts and expertise to increase the
opportunity for a first visit fix. This all amounts to increased uptime and reduced cost for the customer. 5. Get the full view with 3D modeling Volvo CE’s Dig Assist machine control application for excavators has been updated with new features that make it even faster and easier to create plans and put more information at operators’ fingertips — raising the bar once again on productivity, efficiency and safety in digging operations. Via the Dig Assist app on the Volvo CoPilot interface, operators can choose from 2D, In-Field Design and 3D tools right from the comfort of the cab. While the 2D app is intended for site levelling and profiling slopes, and the In-Field Design option allows operators to go from a paper drawing to a digital excavation model in minutes via GNSS and RTK navigation technology, it is the 3D option that is the ideal choice for complex and larger infrastructure projects. Providing full three-dimensional functionality, Topcon 3D-MC and Trimble Earthworks for Dig Assist allow designs to be uploaded directly into the Volvo Co-Pilot — this ability to offer both solutions is unique to Volvo. Simply import a project file and get to work.
6. Reach the next level with gamified operator training An app which helps operators make small but important improvements every time is taking its cue from the world of gaming. Operator coaching forms part of the Load Assist family and is now available in select markets across the world. The latest upgrade gives operators of Volvo’s L110H to L260H wheel loaders real-time information so that they can better understand how their actions influence output. A bit like chasing a top score on a computer game, the new feature allows operators to set targets and objectives for continual performance improvement. Even experienced and proficient operators benefit from the advantages of the new app, as early adopters have reported that it helps them to see their behavior reflected back in a nonjudgemental way, to analyze their productivity from a pure efficiency standpoint and then to suggest areas of improvement they would never have considered before. Operator coaching is just one example of how gaming trends are influencing the world of construction. For more information, visit www.volvoce.com.

SmartShell naturally shapes to the contours of the hand and flex points, helping to ensure maximum comfort and increased compliance. For extra durability, SmartShell is double-stitched in high-wear areas including fingertips, index finger and palm.
Some jobs need a glove that covers it all: impact protection, cut protection, excellent grip in wet conditions and high visibility. And it must do all of this without sacrificing comfort, because an uncomfortable glove is an unworn glove, and that is the ruin of compliance and safety programs. Brass Knuckle SmartShell is the nextgeneration, cross-functional glove that does it all. It’s loaded with features that are engineered to provide protection on multiple fronts, all while excellent flexibility and toprated ergonomic design make it one of the most wearable gloves in its class, according to the manufacturer. The winning formula for SmartShell BKCR4499 gloves starts with a machine knit, ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) with ANSI cut level A5 protection on the palms. Its strength-toweight ratio is 8 to 15 times higher than steel. Next, thermoplastic rubber (TPR) padding is sonically welded to the back of the glove for protection from contusions, smash injuries, object strikes, pinch-point injuries to the tips of each finger and other impact hazards. The gritty black nitrile palm coating offers excellent wet grip and the bright lime green shell color meets the requirements of American National Standard (ANSI/ISEA 107-2010) for high-visibility safety apparel.
SmartShell naturally shapes to the contours of the hand and flex points, helping to ensure maximum comfort and increased compliance. For extra durability, SmartShell is double-stitched in high-wear areas including fingertips, index finger and palm. “When designing SmartShell, our goal was to create the ultimate combination of safety and comfort in a protective glove,” said Jeff Cullman, vice president of sales of Brass Knuckle Protection. “We partnered with our valued distributors to collect a list of ‘must haves’ and set out to engineer a glove that brings together the right measures of impact protection, cut protection and ergonomics. It really is a next-generation type of glove. Once people try it, they’re immediately impressed by how well all of its features perform in real world environments.” SmartShell was engineered to excel in a variety of industries where impact protection, cut protection and a perfect fit are all priorities. It is ideal for assembly, agriculture, construction, forestry and logging, heavy equipment, machine operation, manufacturing, oil and gas and other petrol-based refining, mining, rigging and other heavy-duty work environments. Vantage Auctions returned to its first in-person, live auction since the onset of COVID-19 in early 2020. This $5,00,000 auction was held on July 24, 2021, where bidders were welcomed onsite to inspect the equipment, as well as to bid live at the event, while others were still able to bid virtually. Robert LaMarsh, president of Vantage Auctions, had great expectations for this first in-person auction in 17 months, and this one did not disappoint. Vantage hosted more than 500 on-site bidders, plus an additional 2,500 online bidders. With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in February 2020, and in response to the cancellation of in-person events, Vantage made the quick decision to go completely virtual and has continued that pattern throughout the pandemic, until restrictions were recently lifted in California. The lockdown affected the manufacturing of new equipment, bringing about a shortage. This led to an opportunity for auction houses like Vantage Auctions to boost its consignments and offer hard-to-deliver equipment to contractors. “The challenge over the last year has been keeping the flow of equipment coming as less and less became available,” LaMarsh said. “Traditionally, contractors would buy new equipment and sell their old, but with little to no new equipment being produced, this created the perfect opportu-
nity for Vantage auctions to provide much needed machines to the end users.” For this first in-person and virtual auction, the auction was well-balanced with inventory ranging from commercial trucks, construction equipment, rippers, attachments to a collection of antique Husqvarna motorcycles. LaMarsh was excited about all of it, and believes that when people take the time to attend an auction in-person and inspect a vehicle, it will typically result in a higher sales price – not always, but often. According to LaMarsh, what sets Vantage apart from other auctions is the people. “Ultimately, they are just people selling equipment in the dirt, but they make sure their buyers have the best experience, including customer service by answering their questions and being available to assist with photos and videos for their online bidders,” he said. “Vantage employees give them a sense of quality, help them feel like they are here at the actual auction. They want the buyer to feel most comfortable with their purchase.” Vantage Auctions will hold its next auction on Sept. 18, 2021.
October of that year. It currently has 14 employees on a site of 30 acres and holds auctions six times per year. These auctions have become a community event for its staff, for the construction community and for local vendors. For more information, call 951/228-9040 or visit www.vantageauctions.com. CEG
