Transportation Construction…

OSHA COVID Safety Rules Offer Flexibility to Firms New guidelines from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) grant transportation construction contractors and other businesses the flexibility to adopt COVID safety protocols that fit their specific workplaces, according to the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA). “Today’s OSHA announcement is a wellreasoned approach that will let the transportation construction industry continue to provide safety protections tailored to its workers as they build our roads and keep our country moving during the COVID pandemic,” said ARTBA President and CEO David Bauer. OSHA announced June 10 a new Emergency Temporary Standard (ETS) aimed at protecting workers from COVID19 that applies only to the health care industry. For other sectors such as road and bridge construction, the agency updated existing

guidance, enabling those sectors to continue best practices designed specifically for transportation workers. Transportation construction workers primarily work outdoors in all kinds of weather. The new rules allow for relaxed requirements related to face coverings and other health protocols for workers who are fully vaccinated. OSHA’s decision not to create a nationwide ETS applying to all industries acknowledges the drawbacks of a “one size fits all” approach to new COVID regulations. In a series of meetings and letters since December, ARTBA has urged incoming Biden Administration officials to “consider the specific attributes and existing safety protocols of particular industries, with the objective of not undermining those protections to the detriment of their workers.” For more information, visit www.artba.org. 

Investment Yields $200B in Economic Activity for Calif. Federal, state and local infrastructure funding yields nearly $200 billion in economic activity in California and creates 700,000 jobs each year for the Golden State, according to a new report from the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA). In the next 10 years, government investments in California’s transportation infrastructure will grow from $40.4 billion in 2021 to $52.6 billion in 2030. That means that every $1 spent on infrastructure in California creates $4.30 in economic activity, ARTBA said. “With California so dependent on transportation infrastructure, our research shows that investment in roads, bridges and transit systems clearly yields significant benefits, helping underwrite the Golden State’s continuing economic expansion,” said ARTBA Chief Economist Alison Premo Black, who conducted the research. The release of “The Economic Impacts of Highway, Street, Bridge, & Transit Investment in California” is accompanied by the launch of a new, searchable online database that breaks down the economic benefits of infrastructure spending in every California county. “There’s no question that construction, maintenance and operation of California’s highway, street, bridge and transit infrastructure is a major economic driver that benefits every sector of the economy,” said Michael Quigley, executive director, California Alliance for Jobs. “This is a groundbreaking report that, for the first time, takes all transportation revenue streams into account — local, state, federal — and quantifies the economic benefits of these investments on California and local economies.”

According to ARTBA, California highway, street, bridge and transit investment will support $200 billion in annual benefits over the next decade, including: • Generating nearly $101.5 billion annually in economic output as businesses throughout the economy sell goods and services to both other businesses and consumers — totaling $1 trillion over 10 years. • Contributing $52 billion per year to the Gross State

Product (GSP), adding up to $520 billion over 10 years. This accounts for nearly 2 percent of total GSP. • Supporting nearly 700,000 jobs on average each year throughout the economy, with 86 percent of the employment outside of the construction industry. This includes an estimated 220,000 jobs in transportation and warehousing, 80,000 jobs in manufacturing and trade and 68,000 jobs in professional and business services. • Earnings for workers of nearly $30.3 billion in wages annually, totaling $303 billion over 10 years. • Adding $21.2 billion in tax revenues each year, totaling as much as $212.2 billion over 10 years. This includes $6 billion in annual state and local tax revenue from payroll, business, income, sales and use taxes, totaling $60.9 billion over 10 years, and $15 billion in annual federal payroll, income and business taxes, totaling $151.3 billion over 10 years. The economic activity is driven by construction spending as well as expenditures on transit operations, planning and design work, right-of-way purchases, construction support, administration and research. The ARTBA report uses a series of sophisticated models to quantify both the immediate economic activity from increased highway, street, bridge and transit program spending levels in California and the longer-term user benefits that accrue from improving the transportation system. The report was released by the California Alliance for Jobs (CAJ), California Transit Association (CTA), California State Association of Counties (CSAC) and the League of California Cities (Cal Cities). CDOT Officials Form Incident Command for I-70 Mudslide Glenwood Canyon, a 12.5-mi. canyon in western Colorado, was closed on July 29 due to a severe mudslide in the Grizzly Creek burn scar area. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) highway maintenance personnel have been working to secure the roadway and protect life safety, but the combination of the fires from last summer and the extreme rain resulted in substantial damage to the roadway, necessitating a longer-term closure of the Interstate. CDOT is still assessing significant damage to both the lower and upper decks of I70 in sections near the Hanging Lake Tunnel, Executive Director Shoshana Lew said during a news conference with Colorado Gov. Jared Polis. Large rocks and other debris fell down the canyon in recent days and parts of the eastbound lanes remain underwater, she said. Glenwood Canyon typically receives an average 2.4 in. of rain in July. Over the course of five days, more than 4 in. of preThe July 29 mudslides stranded more than 100 people in their vehicles overnight cipitation fell on the burn scar area. and caused extensive damage that closed Interstate 70. season begins. To accomplish this challenging objective, it will take a focused team dedicated to the task at hand, and the kind of coordination and cadence of mission that only an ICS can provide. Region 3’s Mike Goolsby, who has been managing the incident up to this point, will temporarily leave his post to assume the role of Incident Commander until further notice. He will continue to serve as a member of the CDOT EMT in that capacity. Goolsby will make sure the IC is seamlessly integrated with CDOT’s executive management team (EMT) structure to ensure all of the organization’s resources are being leveraged so that crews are continuing to work as one team. Deputy Chief Engineer Keith Stefanik will serve as part of the IC as deputy incident commander and will report to CDOT Chief Engineer Steve Harelson, who will continue to oversee all of the engineering and structural analysis being conducted through the IC. Division of Maintenance and Operations Director John Lorme will continue to manage movement of resources throughout CDOT to ensure that the response has sufficient resources from the maintenance side. 

Crews Working to Replace Post Office Canyon Bridge On State Route 73 in the Fort Apache Reservation, alongside the North Fork White River, ADOT is in the process of replacing an old bridge deck. By the standards of the region, the Post Office Canyon Bridge, built in 1968, isn’t quite a senior citizen at 53 years. But if it could talk, it would tell you the top song that year was “Hey Jude,” by The Beatles, minimum wage was $1.60 an hour and a Big Mac was 49 cents. The single span, steel girder bridge rises more than 1 mi. above Post Office Canyon at 5,912 ft. By ADOT engineering measurements, the bridge is safe, but because ADOT specifications and standards have evolved, it’s time to replace the current deck with reinforced concrete 8-in. thick and to replace deck drains, deck joints and bridge barrier transitions, among a host of other improvements. The project will reconstruct and significantly extend the life of the bridge. The project is in full swing and crews are demolishing and replacing the old decks. When residents cross the newly refurbished span, they now know they will be 1 mi. high, on the White River Scenic Road and a Rural Major Collector Road — and on a passage whose history

Officials from the Arizona Department of Transportation are in the process of replacing the current bridge deck with reinforced 8-in. thick concrete and to replace deck drains, deck joints and bridge barrier transitions, among a host of other improvements.

began in the 1800s. According to the project website, the following restrictions are in place from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week through September: • SR 73 is narrowed to one lane of alternating north- and southbound travel near the Post Office Canyon Bridge (mileposts 348349).

• A temporary traffic signal helps drivers travel through the construction area. • 12-ft. vehicle width restriction in the work zone. • Reduced speed limit in the work zone. Bridge Background It is located nearly half-way down an 11-mi. stretch of SR 73,

between Indian Pine near State Route 260 and the Alchesay National Fish Hatchery, that was designated in 1993 as the White River Scenic Road. The route is a U-shaped loop, about 40-mil. long with one end on U.S. 60 north of Carrizo and the other near Indian Pine and State Route 260. According to the state-published Arizona Memory Project, SR 73

started out as little more than a foot trail: “With the establishment of a military camp in 1870 that would be renamed Fort Apache in 1879, the development of rough trails into passable packed-earth roads became necessary. In 1929, the old trail that would become SR 73 allowed horse-riding soldiers and mule-drawn freight wagons to reach the remote garrison from both the north and the south.” The Post Office Canyon Bridge was named after the canyon it crosses, the Post Office Canyon, said Navaphan Viboolmate, the ADOT engineer who is overseeing the deck replacement, of ADOT’s Bridge Design Section. Before 1968, an earlier bridge across the canyon had a deck built from timber, Viboolmate said. It was torn down to make way for the current bridge. “It was an open design,” he said. “Driving on it you could see side rails and cross rails.” Located in Navajo County between mileposts 348 and 349, the bridge sits on a section of SR 73 that is classified as a Rural Major Collector Road. “It connects to local communities, including Fort Apache, Whiteriver and Cedar Creek,” Viboolmate said. “It connects State Route 260 and U.S. 60.” 

Rockfall Mitigation Project Starts On State Route 80 Construction crews from the Arizona Department of Transportation have begun the $3.5 million rockfall mitigation project. The project will involve excavating rock from slopes along SR 80, which will create a wider “clear zone” on both sides of the highway to decrease the risk of debris landing on the roadway. This safety improvement will take place near the intersection of SR 90 near Pintek Road, at milepost 334. Preliminary work began in the first week August as work crews began mobilizing equipment and preparing the site. By mid-August, drivers should plan for consistent alternating lane closures with flaggers directing one lane of travel through the work zone at a time. The work will occur during daytime hours, with delays of up to 15 minutes. To limit traffic impacts, work crews will

attempt to remove rock with heavy equipment. Blasting may be necessary, which would require a full closure of SR 80 near the work zone. The project is expected to continue into mid-2022. Six New Cat Pulverizers Deliver Concrete Demolition Caterpillar’s new generation of primary and secondary pulverizers deliver up to 52 percent faster cycle times, producing more tons-per-liter of fuel burned. The new Cat Pulverizer line includes three new rotatable primary models — P318, P324 and P332 — which feature 360-degree rotation, and three new fixed secondary models — P218, P224 and P232. Both pulverizer series are designed to fit 19.8 to 55 ton (18to 50-t) machines. The new pulverizer design is built around the same SpeedBooster technology found in Cat multi-processors. This feature quickly closes the jaw when there is no load. When the jaw comes into contact with material, the SpeedBooster hydraulic valve automatically switches to power mode for maximum power, quickly shattering concrete. Up to 26 Percent Greater Performance Delivering efficient and profitable demolition of concrete structures, new Cat primary pulverizers balance speed and power by offering up to 52 percent faster cycle times and 21

percent higher force than the previous models, according to the manufacturer. Bidirectional 360-degree rotation for the P300 series models positions the jaw to grab material from any angle for producing material properly sized for further processing. Integral rebar knives quickly shear through pipes, rebar and other embedded materials to improve demolition efficiency. Grab Material From Any Angle Cat secondary pulverizers deliver up to 44 percent faster cycle times and up to 20 percent better force in concrete demolition, resulting in up to 15 percent greater performance in secondary material processing applications, the manufacturer said. Wide jaw openings allow operators to grab more material from any angle, increasing processing speed and improving overall material throughput. More Time Working Delivering the production, reliability, durability and value

expected from Cat products, both new pulverizer series feature bolt-on wear components that can be quickly replaced in the field with no hard-face welding required for maintenance, so the pulverizers spend more time working. Increasing reliability and longevity, all hydraulic components are protected inside a housing with a bolt-on removable panel that provides complete access for servicing. Integrated into all new pulverizers, Cat asset tracking is available for quick attachment locating. Easy-to-establish site boundaries increase attachment security by sending an alert if the asset is moved beyond a set perimeter. Asset tracking allows for efficient management of the entire attachment fleet, quickly viewed through VisionLink with Product Link subscribed equipment. Capable of working on a range of excavators, these new pulverizers are designed to increase efficiency when powered by Cat hydraulic excavators. An integrated solution, Cat Next Gen excavators include pulverizer settings in the controls, allowing the excavator to quickly recognize the attachment and automatically establish the proper operating settings. Along with Cat excavators, these new pulverizers are covered by Cat dealers. For more information, visit www.cat.com. 

Power Meets Portability in McCloskey’s A Different Look... New I4C Compact Impact Crusher IROCK Crushers Launches Its New Website, New Logo

The 44-in. impact crusher has been designed with a deeper chamber, creating greater tramp release space. With an aggressive blow bar and apron design, four-bar variable speed rotor and three crush zones with an optional fourth strike, the I4C can be set up as a primary or secondary crusher in some of the toughest materials.

McCloskey International has unveiled the I4C, the latest entry into McCloskey’s impact crusher line. In a class of its own, it brings the power and productivity of an 44.3 in. (112.5 cm) impactor to a compact footprint for maximum maneuverability. Taking the original impact crusher design and transforming it into a heavy duty compact product that is even more flexible and productive, the new mobile crushers maximize the efficiency of any project site, according to the manufacturer. Built to the same high standards as full-size crushers, the new I4C delivers additional convenience and choice to suit every customer’s needs. McCloskey engineers have adapted the design to meet the evolving requirements of today’s projects and operations by developing more compact products while maintaining the same high standard of McCloskey durability, reliability and quality. The I4C compact impact crushers have a number of features that enhance their operation. The 44 in. impact crusher has been designed with a deeper chamber, creating greater tramp release space. With an aggressive blow bar and apron design, four-bar variable speed rotor and three crush zones with an optional fourth strike, the I4C can be set up as a primary or secondary crusher in some of the toughest materials. A new asymmetric feeder reduces bridging that can occur in some applications and, combined with the single unit feeder-hopper construction, delivers better motion and vibration for the material as it moves into the impact chamber. Maximum efficiency of material flow is delivered end-toend with the I4C — from the feeder to the new curved belt on the main conveyor that better manages material delivered to its 4m high stockpile. With quick release and ground level access, the conveyor belt also is easy to maintain and service. As with all McCloskey equipment, safety is paramount,

and the I4C is equipped with a number of features to ensure the workplace and the operator are secure. A chamber door safety sensor, built in safety shutdown functions, chamber safety arm and an innovative platform for changing blow bars all contribute to the safe operation and maintenance of the equipment. Simplicity is key, with ease-of-use and safety considerations built into the low voltage electrical system, hydraulics and control panel. Higher engine power delivers cost efficiency by delivering maximum production levels and is, size-for-size, McCloskey’s most powerful impact crusher, according to the manufacturer. “Listening to our customers is a core element of our design engineering across all product lines. We are bringing to the I4C to market to respond to the demand for a heavy duty, high production impact crusher with high mobility and enriched safety features. The I4C is an exciting entrant to the category, and we look forward to working with our global dealer network to fulfill the demand for these products,” said Toni Laaksonen, senior vice president, McCloskey International. For maintenance ease the vast majority of components are identical between models to simplify spare parts. Ground level access allows for quick service and maintenance, reducing the downtime for the operation. These compact, mobile crushers are suited particularly to construction and demolition recycling, asphalt recycling and aggregates. The new impactors deliver high performance and expanded versatility in a highly mobile lineup to customers around the world. With their fast set-up time and ability to nimbly move around in tight spaces, the crusher’s small footprint is uniquely suited to heavy duty applications where mobility and high production are key. JSC Aluminum Alloys Rely On Sennebogen 825M for Projects On-site logistics for JSC Aluminium Alloys.

There’s no time for downtime at JSC Aluminium Alloys, one of the largest aluminum alloy producers in Russia. Operating conditions at the mill are challenging and the three material handlers that take on most of the site’s loading and logistics tasks are on the run around the clock. That’s why Andrey Tsidenov, the general director of the plant, chose Sennebogen 825 M machines for the job. Tsidenov said his mill is no place for equipment that relies on sensitive electronics to keep producing efficiently. Sennebogen’s full line of material handlers is purpose-built for just such working environments. In these machines, smart hydraulics take the place of computers and black boxes to lift and carry loads smoothly, quickly and cost-effectively. Keeping Equipment Up-to-Date Located in Podolsk, near Moscow, JSC Aluminium Alloys employs 320 people and produces approximately 49,600 tons per year of finished aluminum products. Up to a half of the company's production is exported to Asian countries and North America. The raw material is used in profiles for aluminum frameworks, special tools and even engines. Tsidenov attaches great importance to the continual updating of production technologies and equipment. In 2010, the company acquired a rotary kiln system, which opened opportunity and a new revenue stream including slag processing. Following this addition, the company began upgrading its material handling fleet with its three Sennebogen 825 M material handlers. The third of these went into operation in Spring of last year.

Versatile, Powerful The 825 M is a rubber-tired 57,600 lb. (26,127 kg), 197 HP (145 kW) machine. Equipped with a Sennebogen K12 boom, it has a reach of almost 40 ft. (12 m) and the machines are able to move between workstations on the 9-acre mill site at speeds up to 12.5 mph (20 kph). Tsidenov’s Sennebogen fleet supports all transport and logistics processes at the mill. The machines work three shifts every day unloading the raw materials and distributing them to sorting plants, loading scrap for remelt and loading finished products for shipment. Compact Maneuverability The mill’s head of transport, Andrei Frolushkin, agrees that Sennebogen’s “computer free” engineering is essential for the working conditions in the factory. The design of the site, originally built in the 1950s, also attracted the management to the compact size of the 825s. Road height is low and limited by masts and pipes. The 825s’ low travel height and maneuverability allow it to travel through the difficult paths with the boom and stick fully extended in transport position. After seven years of experience with Sennebogen, Frolushkin is sure that Sennebogen technology is the best choice for JSC Aluminium Alloys. “Their reliable maintenance, robust construction and simplicity definitely convinced us," he said. Weather Warranty Helps Contractors With Unforeseen Costs, Project Delays Weather events can wreck construction sites and timelines. In fact, many contractors lament it is the leading cause of project delays. Inclement weather can create unsafe working conditions, damage equipment, delay material deliveries, block jobsite access points, move materials, deposit debris and lead to potential legal issues. And these obstacles can extend project timelines, waste time and materials, and increase construction costs. Even when contractors do everything right when it comes to planning for weather events and mitigating their effects, severe or inclement weather can cause unforeseen delays. Severe weather events and natural disasters have become more frequent and intense. According to the Insurance Information Institute, there were an average of 520 natural catastrophes per year between 1989 and 2018. In 2019, there were 820 of them — a nearly 60 percent increase from the average over the past three decades. Weather events can increase construction costs. In total, weather-related delays cost the U.S. construction industry $4 billion annually. When companies rent equipment, and there is a project delay due to an unforeseen weather event, they often need their rentals extended to accommodate the new schedule. So, while contractors clean up their sites and try to get back on track, they also need to scramble to extend their equipment rentals or rent other equipment if the original rental isn’t available beyond the return date. And, they have to secure the equipment rental when other contractors in their area are in the same situation, which leads to a demand surge as contractors compete for the same equipment. Weather Warranty provides a weather protection add-on for equipment rental customers. The company provides equipment renters an automatic extension of their rental agreement (or enough store credit to rent again when the weather clears) when severe weather causes unexpected delays. It lessens the impact of bad weather in advance by enabling the customer to lock in rental extensions if they pay a small fee at the time of the rental. The service works similar to travel insurance when you book a flight. If

Built-in bad weather protection plan eliminates the contractor’s worry that bad weather will push the job schedule out longer than their rental, and it removes the budget-busting potential of normal extensions, since Weather Warranty pays the full cost.

something goes wrong, and you can’t fly on those dates, you’re taken care of and able to rebook at a later date without having to pay full price for a new ticket. When you request Weather Warranty on your equipment rental, and weather delays your schedule, the rental gets extended automatically. This built-in weather protection plan eliminates the contractor’s worry that bad weather will push the job schedule out longer than their rental, and it removes the budget-busting potential of normal extensions since Weather Warranty pays the full cost. When Weather Warranty polled contractors about automatically extending equipment rental due to project delays caused by bad weather, 75 percent said they would pay extra for the service. And, it’s not only the contractors who benefit. Weather Warranty pays rental dealers to provide additional days with the equipment if a jobsite experiences extreme rain, wind or cold temperatures, and there is no charge to the rental company for partnering with Weather Warranty. “Weather Warranty is my new secret weapon. Like everybody else, I’ve been competing in the market on my equipment, my price and my reputation, but at the end of the day, I’m still always looking for that one thing that’s going to set us apart from every other rental dealer. When I discovered Weather Warranty, I knew I’d finally

found it. Now I’m the guy that can say to my customer ‘If you rent from me, you don’t have to worry about the weather’. How cool is that? Big win,” said Mike Travis, former owner and general manager of CER Equipment Rental (CER). “CER and Weather Warranty help me to solve a real problem that I face daily. I feel like I can finally sleep at night. After a while, I just said to CER, ‘This is a no-brainer. Just include it on all my contracts,’” said Dick Charleau, president, Mid-Mass Renovating. Every machine and every rental is eligible for Weather Warranty. No exclusions. And, by offering Weather Warranty, shops like CER average 5 to 8 percent extra revenue per rental. Founded in 2020 — in a year of a record-breaking number of tropical storms to affect the United States — Weather Warranty is a new solution to an old problem. “If project-delaying weather events are a contractor’s greatest enemy, then the rental dealer who can provide them with what they need, when they need it, and in a way that does not blow up their budget becomes the contractor’s biggest ally,” said Rick Wilmot, cofounder and product lead at Weather Warranty. “Help your customers plan for the unexpected and offer them what no one else can — an equipment rental experience without the weather worries.” 

Eco Log Introduces Series of Harvester Heads to Lineup Eco Log has added its own series of harvester heads, consisting of four models, to the existing line-up. This makes Eco Log a complete forest machine manufacturer, offering machines and solutions for profitable and high-productive forestry all over the globe. The new series of Eco Log harvester heads is based on the technique of SP Maskiner, which has now been adjusted and optimized to make a perfect match for Eco Log harvesters. All models are designed according to the low-friction concept, where the combination of five different innovations result in harvester heads with impressive productivity, high durability, minimal maintenance and fuel consumption, according to the manufacturer. Eco Log harvester heads also have been equipped with Eco Log saw control, a system optimizing every cross-cut regardless of conditions such as tree species and type of felling. As the new harvester heads along with Eco Log Saw Control are now being launched, Anders Gustafson, Eco Log CEO, said that the results exceed expectations. “Our new harvester heads are working great and the reactions from customers who have tried them tells us that they are incredibly fast and have highly-dependable length measuring. “The foundation of the design is the result of 40 years of development, quality and knowledge that have now been customized and further developed to achieve highest efficiency in combination with Eco Log harvesters. We know from before that our harvesters are characterized by their high productivity. With our new series of harvester heads, we are now taking productivity to yet another level,” said Gustafson. During the past two years, Eco Log has been growing steadily and successively increased the range of harvesters as well as forwarders — something that has resulted in a comprehensive line-up. Now, the new series of harvester heads is the next step of a long-term development and growth-strategy. “We believe a lot in our new harvester heads and it feels really great to present them along with Eco Log saw control to the mar-

ket, widening our range even more. Naturally, we will also continue to offer Log Max harvester heads like before. This gives customers who choose Eco Log access to a very wide range with a great variety of options — exactly as it should be,” said Gustafson. Facts About Eco Log Series of Harvester Heads Eco Log harvester head series consists of four models: • Eco Log 461 LF — a versatile and rapid low-weight harvester head that easily handles thinning even in the most hard-to-reach areas. • Eco Log 561 LF — a highly-productive all-round harvester head that handles everything from thinning low-grade timber to basic final felling. • Eco Log 661 LF — a strong and versatile high-performance harvester head for any kind of final felling. • Eco Log 761 LF — a powerful and reli-

able harvester head that handles even the toughest final felling operations with high capacity and maximum performance. All models are designed according to the Low Friction concept (LF) consisting of five different solutions developed to achieve maximum production, optimum fuel and energy consumption and minimal maintenance costs. The harvester head always delivers optimum pressure and carrying capacity in relation to the stem, resulting in high speed and minimal friction. Eco Log Saw Control — a system ensur-

ing that every cut is optimized regardless of external conditions. Due to feedback between the base machine and the harvester head, every cut is performed with highest efficiency without any need for manual adjustments in the settings from different tree species made by the operator. In mixed forests or tough final fellings, Eco Log Saw Control optimizes every cut for time-efficient and productive forestry, according to the manufacturer. Rototilt Broadens QuickChange Coupler Program to Include Growing Compact Machine Sector

QuickChange can now be provided on tiltrotator models R3 to R8, as well as on QuickChange machine couplers in the 6.6 to 35.2 ton (6 to 32-t) range.

Development continues for Rototilt’s fully automatic quick coupler system QuickChange. Rototilt is expanding its line of next-generation quick coupler systems with three additional new sizes: QC45-4, QC45-5 and QC60-4, with delivery beginning May 2021. QuickChange can now be provided on tiltrotator models R3 to R8, as well as on QuickChange machine couplers in the 6.6 to 35.2 ton (6 to 32-t) range. And with the award-winning SecureLock safety solution as standard, the risk of accidents associated with improperly coupled quick couplers is reduced due to continuous monitoring of the quick coupler locking function in the machine coupler and tiltrotator. “We’re seeing a clear increase in interest among users of compact machines in using fully automatic quick coupler systems. We can now offer the latest technology for these

machines too, with the launch of QC45-4 and QC45-5,” said Sven-Roger Ekström, product manager. With Rototilt QuickChange for machine couplers, tiltrotators and tools, hydraulic and electronic tools can be changed without even leaving the cab. QuickChange is based on the S standard, which is compact and very robust. QuickChange is part of the common Open-S standard, which ensures compatibility between different manufacturers for the hydraulic interface between machine couplers, tiltrotators and tools. With Rototilt QuickChange, users can quickly disconnect the tiltrotator when the job doesn’t require tiltrotator functionality. The excavator becomes a full-fledged tool carrier that lets users work faster, smarter and with more precision, according to the manufacturer. For more information, visit rototilt.com. 

Early Planning Stages Help Contractor Reach Project Goal WINNER from page 1

secutively with the bridge widening work and timed it to be able to start inside lane paving as soon as the bridges were complete. That shaved about six months off the schedule by overlapping the stages. “For the Washington Bridge widening, we did an outside widening in the early stage and due to traffic restrictions there was a space in the middle where had to come back later on to complete the widening,” he added. ”We looked at the traffic pattern and striping plan and we were able to shift traffic around enough to where that work could be done at the same time as the final median stage. We were able to do them consecutively, which shaved off another five months. We had another stage to pave lane 1 and 2 that we were supposed to do at the end of the project, that would take three months. We were able to re-sequence that element and make it part of the median stage. That added up to about 18 months and led to the early completion”

The project required the general contractor to utilize a number of pieces of Cat iron, including backhoes: Cat 430Es and a Cat 430E; excavators: a Cat 308E2 CRSBs, M322Ds, 321Cs 328D, 330CLs, and 345Cs; rollers: a Cat CS563; loaders: Cat 938G IIs, 950Hs, 950Gs, 950 HQs, and 950Ks; and a skid steer —a Cat 259D CCE. Demolition and excavation operations generated large amounts of concrete, asphalt and steel. “We were able to recycle a majority of the demolition concrete and asphalt on-site,” said Roe. New materials included 90,000 tons of concrete and asphalt. Smooth Operation There were few design and engineering changes. “Most of everything was done according to the plan,” said Kevin Bui, the assistant resident engineer for the project. “We had anticipated possible issues with the subgrade at certain locations within the job limits. Flatiron went out ahead

Crews anticipated possible issues with the subgrade at certain locations within the job limits, so Flatiron went out ahead of time and drilled at several locations to see what the conditions of the subgrade were.

the exact limits of the work that would be done and every crew knew their specific tasks.” Bui stressed that the geographic information system (GIS) tool used to coordinate the pavement replacement, using Google Earth maps, was helpful in identifying access areas. ‘When you are working with lane closures, you have limited access to get equipment in and out of the site,” said Bui, “and if you don’t have enough access, it can get jammed up pretty quickly, which impacts production. This is a good tool to use on other projects.” The bridge work was completed in February 2020 with the demolition of the existing overhangs and final closure pours on the Hobart Bridge. “The lane replacement work was done around June of 2020 and from there we finished up the job doing the median replacement that was finished at the end of the year,” said Roe. “Some of the roadway work went on a little longer. Both Caltrans and Flatiron are proud of the awards recognizing their efforts.

For its efforts on the Interstate 710 Pavement Rehabilitation and Bridge Widening Project, Flatiron and Caltrans earned Project of the Year and Freeway/Expressway Project of the Year.

of time and drilled at several locations to see what the conditions of the subgrade were. There were a few areas where it was not optimal and we were prepared for that. When we encountered those areas we had a game plan in place to help Flatiron excavate them out and recompact them to minimize the delays in production.” Roe noted that the subgrade issues fell within the unforeseeable conditions category. “The effort was coordinated between the two of us and it saved a lot of time and resolved problems on those early weekends,” he said. To ensure that the weekend work was maximized, Flatiron planning staff put together a layout of the benchmarks and the limits. “We overlaid those plans with Google Earth and we provided information on a printout to every foreman and inspector from Flatiron and Caltrans,” said Roe. “Everybody had

“We’re all very happy and proud,” said Bui. “We’re pleased to be able to show an example of how we can partner together and how partnering can create these successful outcomes,” said Eric Menjivar, public information officer of District 7. “We weren’t afraid to take some risks and combine stages, nor were we afraid to hear each other out. We were open to each other’s suggestions. We’re proud of what worked and hopefully it sets an example for other projects.” In southern California, Flatiron purchases and rents equipment from Ahern; Ecco; JT Excavating; Myles; Quinn; Savala; Sunbelt; Sunstate; Terry Equipment and United Rentals. “Coordinating equipment needs for each weekend was an extensive effort and we relied heavily on these companies to provide the necessary equipment.” said Roe.  CEG

Because most of our orders are custom work, each trailer is almost like a new product. We have a new product development team that is working all the time with our customers to develop the next big thing in the trailer industry. We are number one in the innovation space, and we come out with three to five new trailers every year. Our company is growing fast, and we have ambitions to double in size in the next three to five years. Henry Bros: XL 120 Hydraulic Gooseneck Trailer Delivers When it comes to job site equipment, a trailer that can adapt to many shapes and sizes is a game changer. Micheal Hulinsky of Henry Bros LLC can attest. After nine months with the XL 120 hydraulic gooseneck trailer, Hulinsky couldn’t ask for better results. Located in Casper, Wyo., Hulinsky hauls scrapers, dozers, rock beds for mines and more. The XL 120, which is the largest trailer in the Henry Bros lineup, is packed with the features and versatility that makes heavy haul simple, according to the company. It has a low overall height, plus it can be arranged in different configurations to adjust the weight. Hulinsky also enjoys the gooseneck, which makes the trailer easy to hook and unhook. “I honestly couldn’t ask for a better trailer to use for multiple applications,” said Hulinsky. “We are constantly changing configurations and the XL 120 makes my life so much easier when doing this. This is especially true when I’m out in the field. I don’t have to haul a crane out to move my load and can adjust it with the trailer itself.” XL Specialized Trailers offers a full lineup of low-profile hydraulic detachable goosenecks (HDG) for all construction hauling needs. These are available with the clas-

sic HDG gooseneck or the low-profile HDG gooseneck, with extendable and non-extendable decks. From 80,000 lb. to 160,000-lb. capacities, XL offers varying deck heights and specs to suit unique requirements. Some of XL’s most popular hydraulics are: • XL 110 low-profile HDG: paver style • XL 110 low-profile HDG: 15-in. deck height • XL 110 low-profile HDG: 18-in. deck height For more information, visit xlspecializedtrailer.com/construction-trailers/. 

Felling Enhances Fender Design for EZ-Tilt Trailers Felling Trailers has released an enhanced fender design for its ground-level loading, EZ-Tilt trailers. The new EZ-Tilt fender design offers a similar profile to Felling’s drop deck equipment trailer fenders, opening from the top to allow clearance for the wheels when the trailers in lowered to the loading position. The mechanism for lifting the top of the fender is the wheels/tires themselves. As the axles (rotating torsion axles) rotate, lowering the tilt bed to the ground, the wheels/tires push up against the top of the fender, lifting it and providing the needed clearance. The main body of the fender is constructed out of a heavy gauge material to maintain the structural integrity throughout the trailer’s life. Key Design Features:
