Work is under way on a $15 million project to provide a new and roomier 38,403-sq.-ft. headquarters building for the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation in Oklahoma City. Crews also will construct a 7,825-sq.-ft. warehouse to replace the one currently in use. It will house the department’s communications manager who installs radios in department vehicles for law enforcement. The warehouse also houses lawn equipment, data storage and equipment used for the department’s Wildlife Expo. The new building site is at NE 18 and N. Lincoln Blvd. It will stand three stories tall and provide more room for wildlife conservation staff. It’s slated to be completed in July 2018. building’s parking area resulted in some additional cost and a few design changes. CMS Willowbrook, based in Oklahoma City, was selected through a competitive bid process

CDOT Trains Local Talent for Central I-70 Project The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), Mayor Michael B. Hancock, Speaker Crisanta Duran, members of Denver City Council, city officials, Gary Community Investments (GCI), Community College of Denver (CCD), Emily Griffith Technical College and construction training providers gathered to celebrate the opening of a new Neighborhood Career Training and Resource Center in the Elyria-Swansea neighborhood. A new, unique investment from GCI also will bring additional job training and support programs to local residents along the I-70 East corridor. The training center and foundation investment will support a first-inColorado local hire program requiring
that 20 percent of the Central 70 work force — the equivalent of approximately 350 local residents — be hired from 15 local neighborhoods adjacent to I-70 in Denver and Aurora. Last year the U.S. Department of Transportation gave CDOT — one of only nine other transportation agencies nationwide — permission to pilot a local-hire program for Central 70. “The Central 70 Project is by itself a major economic driver for the entire Denver-metro region. CDOT wanted to also ensure that these economic and job opportunities were made available to local residents,” said Shailen Bhatt, CDOT executive director. “CDOT is one of only see TRAINING page 26

Emergency Repairs...
As Temperatures Rise, Roadway May Be Affected
THE
END IS NEAR
Colorado Department of Transportation maintenance crews have had to conduct emergency repair work on CO 83 between Belleview and Stroh Road to clean-up broken concrete.
As temperatures rise and stay above 85 degrees, concrete pavement can either break or buckle. Recently, the Colorado Department of Transportation maintenance crews have had to conduct emergency repair work on CO 83 between Belleview and Stroh Road to clean-up broken concrete, gut the damaged section of roadway out and lay asphalt pavement as a temporary repair. Currently, crews are conducting emergency repair work on CO 83 at East Valley Drive. This is necessary to protect motorists from loose concrete and prevent further damage to the roadway. Each summer, CDOT is constantly on the lookout for loose or buckling concrete. CDOT asks motorists to report any signs of damaged roadway to its customer service representatives so they can alert crews immediately. Concrete pavement is often more durable and can have a lifespan of up to 30 years. This is largely due to the fact that concrete is constantly moving allowing for heavy traffic without causing major damage. With extreme heat, however, the concrete starts to expand and the expansion joints meant to allow the concrete to move lock-up. If the concrete expands too much, it has nowhere to release the pressure and ultimately breaks or buckles. Motorists are reminded that they can be penalized for failing to move over and/or slow down when approaching stopped emergency and maintenance vehicles. The Move Over for Cody Act stipulates that failing to move over carries the possibility of 12 to 18 months in jail and a fine up to $5,000. AASHTO Names Western Winners in 10th Annual Contest State department of transportation projects that restored essential highways following devastating landslides and improved safety for motorists and wildlife are among the winners in the western regional America’s Transportation Awards competition. Celebrating its 10th year, the competition attracted 30 project nominations from 12 western states. Eight projects from five of those states received top awards. “Every project nominated in this competition represents the hard work and dedication of state DOTs across the country to meet the transportation needs of the communities we serve,” said David Bernhardt, president of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials and commissioner of the Maine Department of Transportation. “For 10 consecutive years, the America’s Transportation Awards have given state DOTs the recognition they deserve for providing the essential connections that keep people, goods, and our economy moving forward.” Sponsored by AASHTO, AAA and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce the competition recognizes transportation projects in three categories: Quality of Life/Community Development; Best Use of Technology and Innovation; and new this year, Operations Excellence. Two state DOTs took home awards in the Quality of
Life/Community Development category. Nevada DOT won in the small category (projects that cost under $25 million) for its Cave Rock Tunnel Extension and Stormwater Enhancements project. The winner in the medium category (projects costing between $25 million and $200 million) was Montana DOT’s Kalispell BypassU.S. 93 Alternate Route project. Two state DOTs won in the Best Use of Technology and Innovation category. Idaho Transportation Department won in the small category for its U.S. 20 Thornton Interchange project. Colorado DOT’s SH 9 CO River South Wildlife and Safety project won in the medium category and CDOT’s U.S. 36 Express Lanes project won in the large category (projects costing more than $200 million). JLG Offers Diverse Selection of Telehandler Attachments By Rogério dos Santos SPECIAL TO CEG
Telescopic handlers, also known as “telehandlers,” entered the market nearly 40 years ago and are now among the most versatile equipment in the construction industry. Originally, telehandlers were designed to only lift loads on a simple carriage. However, with a plethora of different attachments, telehandlers excel in a variety of tasks across many industries, from agriculture to industrial. The possibilities when designing attachments are endless. Engineers are always thinking of ideas for attachments that would serve new applications. Customers also have pitched ideas to manufacturing firms and original equipment manufacturers, explaining the type of work that would be accomplished with the attachment — helping design engineers develop a piece that gets the job done. JLG Industries Inc. offers more than 25 telehandler attachments to satisfy the bulk of end-users. Many of the attachments are common among manufacturers, but others offer a variety of unique attachments to meet new needs. Some of the more unique telehandler attachments include the pipe grapple and the 180degree swing carriage.
long pipes from one end of the job site to the other. If items are not completely centered on the attachment, pipes could fall off and travel speed could be severely limited. Recently, contractors in the oil and gas industries requested an attachment that would hold pipes in place and help operators meet time constraints. The pipe grapple was designed for this purpose — to handle various pipe diameters and lengths without failure. Resembling a carriage, the pipe grapple has two arms that fold down onto the pipes, securing and preventing the load from rolling off or tipping sideways. This allows operators to transport pipes securely from point A to point B. If no items need to be held down, the arms can be placed in an idle, vertical position. The telehandler can then be used for typical palletized loads. While the pipe grapple is known for its use in the
gas and oil industries, it has been used in many other trades. With its ability to carry regular loads and pipes across a job site, the attachment is ideal for a variety of jobs. 180-Degree Swing Carriage Telehandlers are large vehicles, but sometimes need to get loads into minuscule areas. The 90-degree swing carriage was designed as a solution to this problem, but is limited in its swing (45-degree swing to the left and right). To give operators more flexibility while working in tight spaces, the 180degree swing carriage was developed. The 180-degree swing carriage is an offset pivoting attachment, allowing operators to rotate outside the machine’s wheels. If the attachment was centered on the end of the boom, the load may interfere with the machine’s structure or the operator would need to lift the boom to avoid interference. Instead, the swing carriage is designed to allow operation when the boom is extended and retracted. The 180-degree swing carriage was designed to permit the maneuvering of
loads through openings and tight spaces, like windows and scaffolding. If the telehandler is unable to fit through a restricted space, such as between two buildings, this attachment allows operators to manipulate the load at the end of the boom and place it in the desired location. Attachments are the key to telehandlers’ usefulness, versatility and low total cost of ownership. All the finest features — such as high gradeability and great fuel efficiency — can be included on the machine, but the proper attachment is key to getting the job done efficiently and effectively. A wide array of available attachments lend telehandlers to countless tasks across many industries — it’s no wonder they are considered “the Swiss Army knife” of construction equipment. Rogério dos Santos is the director of engineering of JLG Industries Inc. (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s website at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)

Endangered Long-Snouted Pallid Sturgeon...
Judge Blocks Montana Dam Again Over Threat to Fish By Matt Volz ASSOCIATED PRESS
HELENA, MONT. (AP) A judge blocked construction of a $59 million irrigation dam because of the potential threat to an ancient fish species in Montana’s Yellowstone River just three months after he lifted a previous injunction on the project. In his order reinstating the injunction, U.S. District Judge Brian Morris wrote that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ new analysis of the proposed dam and a separate channel to allow pallid sturgeon to swim around the dam likely violated federal environmental laws. The long-snouted pallid sturgeon, which evolved from fish that were alive in the age of dinosaurs, are cut off from their spawning grounds by a wood-and-rock irrigation dam in eastern Montana. They now number about 125 wild fish, and U.S. government officials

have acknowledged that the species could go extinct if action isn’t taken. Their solution was to propose the new dam and a bypass channel for the fish, a project expected to take between two and three years to build.
Two wildlife and conservation groups successfully sued to block the project in 2015, arguing that there was no evidence that the fish would use the proposed bypass channel. They want the government to remove the existing dam and have a free-flowing
Yellowstone River that will allow the pallid sturgeon to spawn without manmade obstacles. In April, Morris allowed the dam project to proceed after the Corps, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service conducted a more in-depth review of the dam and fish channel on the sturgeon than their original analysis. Defenders of Wildlife and Natural Resource Defense Council filed new claims that even the indepth government review fell short of the requirements of the Endangered Species Act and the National Environmental Protection Act. Morris agreed. In his order, the judge noted that the U.S. government estimated about 41 percent of the fish would use the bypass channel, but didn’t analyze what effect those low numbers would have on the overall population. Government officials also couldn’t demonstrate that the proj-
ect would “improve a situation that they concede to be dire,” Morris wrote. Chris Fassero, the Corps’ project engineer for the dam, said the construction contractor had been waiting to begin work until now, the end of the pallid sturgeon migration season. “The Corps and the other agencies involved need to reconvene and decide how to proceed,” he said. Aaron Hall, Defenders of Wildlife’s Rockies and Plains representative, said the pallid sturgeon can’t wait a decade on construction and analysis to determine whether the bypass works. “Like the government, we agree that this is a time-sensitive matter,” he said. “We really feel like there’s a win-win solution here that we would love to get to.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s website at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)

Brand-New Bell Trucks Put in Heavy-Duty Hours at Quarries By Eric Olson CEG CORRESPONDENT
Hauling rock out of a quarry is about as heavy-duty as any job can get. The people that do it have to be tough and stay sharp for hours each day both to stay safe and to keep the material moving. But they also cannot accomplish their task successfully without the right kind of equipment. Mining and hauling demands stout and reliable machinery. It is hugely important, too, that material hauling be done efficiently to keep fuel costs low for the company moving the rock out of the pit. Ray Lambert did a lot of research before he found a new truck that met all these criteria and, so far, he has been very pleased with the results. Lambert operates Lambert Sand & Gravel Co. in McDonough, Ga., just south of Atlanta. Currently, his firm is working as a subcontractor for Vulcan Materials to haul overburden out of its Stockbridge, Ga., quarry. To help him with the decision on which truck to purchase, Lambert turned to the professionals at Central Atlanta Tractor, based in nearby Austell, Ga. The full-service dealership was founded in 1995 by Charles Spooner and is now operated by his son, Chuck. In the end, Lambert this year chose the Bell B50E off-road truck, a brand-new model on the market — so new that his B50E was the very first of its kind sold in the United States market. In addition, Vulcan Materials bought a Bell B60E this spring for use at its Dalton quarry in northwest Georgia — also from Central Atlanta Tractor. That machine was the first one sold by Bell Trucks east of the Mississippi River and the fourth sold overall in the country. The huge B60E, owned by Vulcan, also is the first model delivered to a quarry and the first used in the aggregates business. Reliability, Efficiency Needed The job of moving overburden from a pit is one that is a bit more complicated than it sounds. “In our line of work, you are always going to burn a lot of fuel,”
Lambert said recently from the Stockbridge quarry site. “We’re climbing out of a hole and we have got about a 1.4-mile round turn. To do it, we have to stop, make a 160degree turn and then start back up a hill again. We are under a full load probably about 30 percent of our run, meaning we are going to be on the high end of our fuel burn — approximately 10 gallons per hour.” His operators are also working close to 12 hours a day, five days a week to pull hundreds of thousands of yards of rock out of the quarry to reach the valuable blue granite underneath. That type of hard, continuous labor is a true test of a machine’s brawn and resiliency, Lambert said. He said the trucks he uses

have to withstand “a pretty severe application.” Lambert had previously used smaller trucks that gave him adequate production and economy. But when he felt he needed an upgrade, he carefully read and studied the specs on the Bell 50ton. He immediately saw several things that impressed him, such as the horsepower to weight ratio, the bed size, the automatic lube system and, most especially, the new Allison transmission. “One of the reasons that I even considered this truck was because the new ones are running an Allison transmission — obviously American made and one that has higher capacity with seven speeds,” he said. “I also liked the higher performance and great design of the Mercedes-Benz engine.” Those specs and his watching the equipment in action have told him that the 50-ton truck is a great niche machine. “We have to be extremely efficient in our work,” he said. “We saw that the 45-ton trucks are tirelimited because most people run
them with a 29.5-25 tire, which is the maximum size truck you can run on that tire. Bell, however, went to an 875/65 R29, which is a completely new tire design with a higher capacity, meaning that you cannot have a true 50-ton truck using the other tire. The Bell really is the first true 50-ton truck.” As far as capacity and cost, the Bell B50E is adding about 4 ½ to 5 yds more per load than the older trucks Lambert used, while keeping operating costs level. “When you are paying the driver the same amount as before, that is really what you want,” he said. “It especially shows up on these really long round turns and we have about a 12½-minute round turn right now. If it doesn’t cost any more to have that much more on the truck it actually can be a game changer.” Not to be overlooked is how operator-friendly the Bell trucks are. “When the operator comes out of the truck at the end of the day and looks like a hundred miles of bad road, then you obviously have see BELL page 26

Electric Car Maker Scraps Plans for $1B Nevada Plant CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) An electric car maker deserted its plan to construct a $1 billion manufacturing plant in southern Nevada, in a move experts said could spell trouble for the company and the broader niche electric automobile businesses. Stefan Krause, Faraday Future chief financial officer said the decision to scrap the plant was due to a shift in business strategy. The Gardena, Calif.-based company said in a statement that it will now look for an existing facility to produce its electric vehicles in California or Nevada. Faraday Future halted work on the project outside Las Vegas last November, at the time calling the stoppage a “temporary adjustment” that wouldn’t affect plans to begin production in 2018. It sunk more than $120 million into the project. “It can be somewhat hard to believe that a company that was so aggressively spending money and moving things forward in their claimed goals will suddenly
change direction and still get to where they want to get to,” said Karl Brauer, executive publisher at Autotrader and Kelley Blue Book. “You kind of don’t know — is this just an adjustment or is there going to be a freefall here?” He and others who closely watch the industry said the decision comes amid several industry changes that could drastically affect companies like Faraday and Tesla that offer uniquely all-electric lineups. Established car companies are releasing more electric options and it’s unclear whether President Donald Trump’s administration will continue tax breaks that incentivize the industry and motivate buyers. “I think the next 12 months are going to be very telling,” Brauer said. “It could drastically change the look of the electric car industry.” Faraday’s announcement came days after reports that a Shanghai court froze more than $180 million in assets belonging to one of the company’s biggest backers, tech
“Faraday has all the earmarks of one of those companies that promises you the world but doesn’t necessarily deliver it.” Karl Brauer Autotrader and Kelley Blue Book
billionaire Jia Yueting. The company said that Jia’s financial problems were not related to the decision. Jia stepped down last week from the helm of the publicly traded arm of LeEco, the Beijing-based conglomerate he founded over a decade ago. At the same time, he reaffirmed his commitment to Faraday Future. The company is attempting an exceptionally expensive feat — one that Tesla has not pulled off, said Michelle Krebs, Autotrader executive analyst. “Tesla has sold vehicles, but it’s not made any money, and that
whole segment is not doing particularly well,” Krebs said. “You’ve got an industry that is capital-intensive and you’ve got an electric vehicle market that is kind of shaky, so those two things probably are at play.” With electric vehicles in particular, she said, there’s no sign that there will be a big payoff anytime soon, “there’s just never enough cash.” Thousands of jobs had been anticipated to come with the construction and launch of the proposed plant on a 900-acre site at the Apex Industrial Park in North Las Vegas.
State Treasurer Dan Schwartz, a critic of the project, blamed state officials for giving false hope that the plant “would magically create 4,500 jobs.” The state had pledged $335 million in incentives to the company, but had not yet spent any taxpayer money on the project, according to Steve Hill, director of the Governor’s Office of Economic Development. Hill said the state, recognizing both the opportunity and risk of the endeavor, required the company to invest at least $1 billion before it received the tax breaks and infrastructure improvements approved by state lawmakers in 2015. “The history of this industry is littered with grand startups that never came true,” Brauer said. “Faraday has all the earmarks of one of those companies that promises you the world but doesn’t necessarily deliver it.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s website at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)
WYDOT Closes County Bridge for Removal, Replacement As of July 5, The Wyoming Department of Transportation closed the Peru Cutoff Bridge over the railroad on County Road 4-37 near Green River Wrecking and Salvage Yard. Business accesses will be maintained over the duration of the project. Green River Wrecking will remain open, and local residents will be able to access the area by driving on WYO 530 South of Green River and then on to County Road 4-37. The area will not be accessible from Interstate 80. The old bridge will be removed and a new bridge will be constructed. The job will be completed this year, in one construction season. Time constraints have been put on the contractor to limit disruption to local residents. WYDOT is allowing the contractor to close the bridge for a 90-day window. The completion date is set for Oct. 31, although engineers expect most of the work to be completed before that time. “The closure is necessary because building the new bridge next to the old one would involve right of way (land) acquisition from the Bureau of Land Management and the Union Pacific Railroad. Also, we would have to realign the road to access the new bridge. These reasons would cause costs to increase substantially, extend the project’s planning phases and finish date, as well as draw out construction,” said Clint Lockman, WYDOT resident engineer. WYDOT has been working with the Sweetwater County Engineering Office to identify deficient bridges in Sweetwater County and the Peru Hill county bridge was noted as in need of replacement. Sweetwater County applied for funds from a WYDOT program called BROS, or Bridge Replacement Off System funds, where counties can apply for financial and construction assistance to replace deficient bridges. WYDOT awarded this job to DeBernardi Construction Co. last year for $1.3 million. For more information, visit wyoroad.info. (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s website at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.) The old Peru Cutoff Bridge will be removed and a new bridge will be constructed.

CDOT Announces 11 Members of 2017 Transportation Commission The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) announced the 2017 Colorado Transportation Commission. The Transportation Commission is comprised of 11 Colorado citizens who represent specific districts across the state. Each commissioner is appointed by Gov. John Hickenlooper, confirmed by the senate and serves a fouryear term. Newly appointed by Hickenlooper this year are two commissioners: Luella Chavez D’Angelo of Lone Tree, serving District 3; and Karen Stuart of Broomfield, serving District 4. Re-appointed by the governor to serve an additional fouryear term are three commissioners: Shannon Gifford, Denver, District 1; Sidny Zink, Durango, District 8; and Bill Thiebaut, Pueblo, District 10. Continuing and completing terms are the remaining six commissioners: Ed Peterson, Lakewood, District 2; Kathy Gilliland, Livermore, District 5; Kathy Connell, Steamboat Springs, District 6; Kathy Hall, Grand Junction, District 7; Rocky Scott, Colorado Springs, District 9; and Steven Hofmeister, Haxtun, District 11. The members of the commission also have elected Zink as chair and Gifford as vice chair. Both will serve in the com-
mission’s leadership positions for one fiscal year, which started in July. Shailen Bhatt, CDOT executive director, said the state’s transportation agency values the guidance of the transportation commission. “We have a high regard for the commission and the advisement its members contribute toward our long-range planning and strategy,” said Bhatt. “The commissioners offer unique perspectives resulting from their individual backgrounds, areas of interest and expertise. More importantly, they are the voice of the general public and the regional areas they serve.” The transportation commission formulates general policy for CDOT. Commission members meet regularly to offer guidance and oversight to the management, construction and maintenance of public highways and other transportation systems in the state. The commission also works to ensure that the preservation and enhancement of Colorado’s environment, safety, mobility and economics is considered in the planning of all transportation projects. Alaska Project Reaches Design Phase The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) joined the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) in signing the Gravina Access Project Record of Decision and Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement. This milestone clears the way for DOT&PF to begin final design and start construction associated with the Gravina Access Project. The purpose of the Gravina Access Project is to improve transportation between Ketchikan and Saxman on Revillagigedo Island and the Ketchikan International Airport and developable land on Gravina Island. The selected alternative, G4v, includes: • the reconstruction of existing airport ferry berths; • improvements to pedestrian facilities at the airport ferry terminals; • a new heavy freight mooring facility and new ferry layup dock on
Gravina Island; • shuttle vans for transportation to and from the airport; • upland improvements to Gravina pedestrian access; and • replacement of the Airport Creek bridge and reconstruction of portions
of Seley Road. DOT&PF is working closely with the Ketchikan Gateway Borough on design details of the various projects.
Once those agreements are completed, DOT&PF can begin final design with a goal of starting construction before 2019 and completing by 2021. Last fall, Gov. Walker committed to investing in Ketchikan the $96.8 million originally allocated to the project. Estimated cost for the Gravina Access Project is $45 million. Additional potential linked developments on Gravina and Revillagigedo Islands would use the remainder of the original project funds. Federal money previously set aside for improving Ketchikan’s connection to the airport will be used to finance design, construction and related activities. For more information, visit dot.alaska.gov. a few DOTs in the nation to implement local hiring and we are doing this not just by setting hiring goals but by actively reaching out to our partners to create a comprehensive support system that makes a career in construction accessible for everyone.” “This is a phenomenal collaboration between CDOT, the city and so many great Denver partners that begins to fulfill the promise to our residents to open up access to the opportunities that are created by the reconstruction and development planned in this area,” said Hancock. “I believe public projects should invest in their communities and that is the value we see in action today. This workforce center is a critical step to providing local, long-time residents with good homes, access to resources to live healthy lives, and training that will equal job placement. This center is a beacon of empowerment for our people and critical support for our neighborhoods.” This spring, GCI joined in this

work by investing more than $1 million in job training and support programs, marking the first time CDOT has partnered with a private foundation. “GCI takes a two-generation approach to investing that includes helping low-income families increase their financial security,” said Dave Younggren, president & CEO of GCI. “We are proud to partner with CCD, CDOT and others who are working hard to ensure that residents living along the I-70 corridor benefit from the economic development happening around them. By providing access to job training and support services, this program will help local families increase their earning potential, which will positively impact their children’s education, health and
future economic outcomes.” The neighborhood career training and resource center will offer six courses with a flexible training schedule in a facility with three work bays, four hands-on training rooms and a yard designated for heavy equipment. The center also will host networking opportunities, including job fairs for construction careers, access to CDOT maintenance job listings and, beginning in 2018, outreach for Central 70 job openings. Funding from GCI will support additional training classes along with support programs, like child care, that are critical to securing and retaining jobs in the construction industry. The efforts began in early 2017 so that local residents will be qualified to apply for Central 70 jobs as
they become available when construction starts in 2018. Also in partnership with CDOT, the city and GCI are the National Western Center, CDD, Emily Griffith Technical College, Colorado Contractors Association and Associated General Contractors. About the Central 70 Project The Central 70 Project will improve safety, mobility and community connections along one of Colorado’s most congested interstate corridors. The project includes removing the 50-year old viaduct, lowering a section of I-70 below grade and constructing a 4acre cover over the interstate. One new express lane in each direction will be added between Brighton Blvd. and Chambers Road. A Record of Decision (ROD), completing a 14-year study process, was released on Jan. 19, 2017, approving the project to move forward with construction. Construction is anticipated to begin in 2018.

These trucks have a very smooth ride and it is a good feeling to know that you can put an operator in one and he doesn’t feel like he has been in a rodeo all day.” Central Atlanta Tractor Help is Never-Ending Lambert worked with Chuck Spooner and Matt Cantrell of Central Atlanta Tractor not only to get the equipment he needed, but also to help train his people on how to use the trucks. In addition, Lambert Sand & Gravel also has a service and maintenance contract with the dealership and monitors, via GPS, the performance and production of the new Bell trucks using the Bell Fleetmatics online service.
“Bell Fleetmatics keeps up with approximately 30 different aspects of the performance of the truck, as well as the number of hours it is working so that we know when it is time to service and we can call Ray and schedule a time to come out,” said Spooner. “Both the dealership and the customer can check the information at any time online,

MB Crusher — A Game Changer for Colorado Company When Avalanche Excavating Inc. was awarded a project in April 2015 that dealt with 11 blocks of underground utilities, storm sewers and water lines in Salida, Colo., the company knew it would not have much room to navigate the spoils it would encounter. Both Howard Houghton III and Tabitha Hapl of Avalanche Excavating foresaw the challenges of hauling off the waste material to be processed. So, they set out to search the web for a solution and came across the MB crusher bucket through YouTube. Houghton and Hapl were impressed by the machine crushing large piles of concrete and rocks. Soon, they contacted MB Crusher America Inc. to find out more about the product.
Tabitha Hapl (L) and Howard Houghton III, of Avalanche Excavating Inc. explain the benefits of purchas-ing the MB Crusher BF90.3 crushing attachment.
The BF90.3 crushing attachment is a mid-sized MB jaw crusher designed for excavators weighing more than 46,300 lbs.
“A lot of people have never seen anything remotely similar to what this machine is capable of doing,” Hapl said. “Feasibly, we save money by not having to buy land to set up a crushing service when you can do it right on the job site.”
With the BF90.3 crushing attachment, Houghton and Hapl could use the unit to crush the waste material on-site without having to transport it to a processing facility — solving their concerns with their 2015 project. The
The company also has begun to sell part of its Class 5 and Class 6 product as structural fill.
BF90.3 crushing attachment is a mid-sized MB jaw crusher designed for excavators weighing more than 46,300 lbs. Houghton and Hapl purchased the BF90.3 crusher bucket for their Salida project, and then later used
it to produce product that classified as Class 5 and Class 6 material. “[Our Class 5 product] is straight from the spoils that we had tested through [a] certified lab and it came through our gradation [and] passed it with flying colors,”
Houghton said. Hapl added, “[The crusher bucket] also has helped us with not having to buy Class 6 [and] Class 5 from an outside source and bringing it into our projects, so we don’t have to haul as much [and we can] stay on the job site. [We are] able to do everything right then [and] right there, and move it around and shuffle it to where we need it to be.” Once Avalanche Excavating began using the crusher bucket regularly, the company started to see an increase in savings, not only from creating its own Class 5 and Class 6 material. “We have saved tremendously from our total trucking purchasing, our hauling, our overall expenses, our fuel, everything by at least 30 to 35 percent,” Houghton said. “We typically use the unit daily, anywhere from eight to 10 hours. Weather doesn’t really shut us down.” The company also has begun to sell part of its Class 5 and Class 6 product as structural fill. Since its initial purchase of the BF90.3 crushing attachment, Avalanche Excavating has added a MB-S14 trommel screening attachment to its equipment line-up to further cut costs. Its MB-S14 screening attachment will screen the already crushed material to create more product the company also is selling. The MB-S14 is one of MB’s screening models designed for excavators weighing between 19,900 and 44,000 lbs. It is built with several different screening panels to accommodate the needs of the job or project. For more information, visit youtu.be/rtqcAkjuITY and mbamerica.com. Lokotrack® ST2.8™ exceeds expectations in making a clean cement additive That’s how we make the big difference, the Metso Way.
A Lokotrack ST2.8 mobile scalping screen is helping a cement plant produce a clean additive for its production process, resulting in significant cost savings. The operator is saving up to $20 a ton by producing the additive using the ST2.8, rather than buying it from an outside source. The Lokotrack ST2.8 has a larger throw than most machines in its size class, which allows it to produce a cleaner end product. The unit’s powerful Caterpillar C4.4 diesel engine meets the latest emissions standards, and a new hydraulic system helps to reduce fuel consumption. Atlas Copco Hydro Magnets Pick Profit From Concrete Demolition Waste Atlas Copco’s hydro magnets quickly and easily separate valuable iron and steel from concrete waste for subsequent recycling. The hydro magnets can be used with carriers that have existing uni-directional auxiliary circuits with a signal line to power and control the magnet, so there is no need for a generator or electric cables from the carrier. They are available as fixed or mobile units where the magnet is attached by the use of a chain. The hydro magnets can magnetize and demagnetize as much as 25 percent faster than conventional magnet controllers and handle 617- to 16,535-lb. loads, according to the manufacturer. The hydro magnet features a flow divider that provides flow and pressure to an onboard hydraulically driven generator. Highly activated voltage rapidly reaches the magnetic strength to attract a large amount of ferrous material and hold it firmly in place. A rapid alternation of the polarity accelerates demagnetization, resulting in fast material drop and a magnet plate free from even small pieces of steel. The optimized power/weight ratio and intelligent interaction between all integrated components in the attachment offers optimal handling performance. This results in faster collection and loading processes. The electronically controlled generator is made of corrosionfree alloy and has a digital controller in a waterproofed body. Atlas Copco’s digital generator control technology gives a magnetization and demagnetization process cycle that is up to 25 percent shorter than conventional magnet controllers. This, in turn, lowers fuel consumption and increases the volume of
processed material. The digital controller also protects the hydro magnet against the risk of damage caused by short circuiting, overheating or excessively high or low revolutions of the generator. All key components of the hydro magnet are integrated into a compact design, and the magnet plate is made to handle harsh environments. A hermetically sealed steel case protects the magnet coil against mechanical and environmental effects, and an external Hardox steel ring protects against wear. The large steel surface compensates for temperature increases. A multi-functional diagnostic panel in a waterproofed body indicates current working status and potential faults for troubleshooting. No special maintenance is needed apart from periodic inspections of the mounting hardware and electrical cable connections between the generator body and the magnet plate. Using hydro magnets to collect ferrous material remaining in the demolition pile not only means more profit but also reduces the risk of damage to crushers, conveyor belts and other jobsite equipment, according to the manufacturer. Additional responsibilities include project scheduling and control of the scope of work to avoid delays, changes, disputes and cost overruns. CMS Willowbrook began demolition work on the previous Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation building in December 2016. Workers used jack hammers to break up the old concrete; Track hoes tore through the existing walls; and cleanup crews hauled away used rebar and concrete. However, the demolition crew left reinforced concrete beams and a foundation that will be used for the new, larger building on the site. The demolition phase has now been completed along with most of the earthwork. Initial construction on the base of the building is now complete. Walls have gone up and footings and concrete pours have been made. Numerous trucks, backhoes and dirt moving equipment are at the construction site and the project area is fenced and secured for safety purposes. According to Angelo Bradford, CMS Willowbrook’s project manager, the company is using 35 subcontractors.

Mammoet Announces Introduction of Dynamic Stability Mammoet announced the introduction of dynamic stability, a method for calculating the dynamic stability of hydraulic trailers. This method provides clients with a detailed assessment of the safety level of their project before it commences. The assessment deals with more relevant parameters than customary in the industry up till now. It therefore allows hydraulic transport projects to be executed more safely, according to the company. In some cases, dynamic stability also will contribute towards more efficient ways of using hydraulic trailers. Dynamic stability was developed in-house and has been verified and approved by classification society DNV. Mammoet will be using dynamic stability for all hydraulic transport projects from now on. Static Rules of Thumb “When you move a load using hydraulic trailers, you have to ensure two things: that the load is stable and does not tip over, and that the trailers carrying the load are strong enough to carry the load,” said Ludo Mous, director operations at Mammoet Europe. “Up until now Mammoet has always followed the industry standard for ensuring enough strength and stability. This standard is based on two rules of thumb: the 7- degree rule and the 2-degree rule. These rules stipulate that the center of gravity of the load needs to stay within a seven degree tipping limit and that it can tilt up to two degrees before a hydraulic group is overloaded.” Safer and More Efficient These rules have always allowed the industry to do its work safely. However, when they were implemented almost

40 years ago, they were based on static trailers. Since then, loads have significantly increased in size and weight. At the same time the axle load capacity of trailers has increased, making margins smaller and exact calculations more relevant. With this in mind, Mammoet concluded that it is time to reassess industry standards and develop a verified calcu-
lation method that incorporates the effects of multiple dynamic forces such as the acceleration and deceleration of the trailer, the forces exerted by the wind, the slope and camber of the road, and the surface on which the load is transported. Detailed Information “This means we thoroughly engineer what a trailer can and cannot do in each specific situation,” said Senior Engineer Jurjen de Vries, who was part of the team that developed dynamic stability. “Instead of giving a yes or no answer to the question ‘Are we within the allowable limit?’ we can provide clients, operators and other stakeholders with detailed information on the strength and stability margins for each individual transport project in a single, easy to understand graph.” All in all, dynamic stability can ensure a higher level of safety and provide clients with more detailed safety information for their projects. In some cases, it helps the user to come up with more efficient transport approaches as well, according to the company. Mammoet will be enhancing and expanding the dynamic stability method in the upcoming years. For more information, visit Mammoet.com. Isuzu Produces Its 40,000th N-Series Gasoline Truck Isuzu Commercial Truck of America Inc. announced that the 40,000th gasoline-powered Isuzu N-Series truck has been produced at the Spartan Motors Inc. facility in Charlotte, Mich. The truck rolled off the line June 8, 2017. “From April 2015 to June 2016 — a span of 15 months — we went from 20,000 to 30,000 gas-powered Isuzu trucks produced in Charlotte,” said Shaun Skinner, president of Isuzu Commercial Truck of America. “Now, only twelve months later, another 10,000 N-Series gas trucks have been built. That’s a testament to the increasing popularity and growing reputation of our gasoline engine, low-cab-forward trucks.” Assembly of Isuzu N-Series gas trucks began at Spartan in April 2011. Isuzu N-Series gas trucks are powered by a Vortec 6.0-L smallblock V8 engine that produces 297 hp at 4,300 rpm and generates 372 lbs.-ft. of torque at 4,000 rpm.
