Project planners believe the new development will allow the airport to meet passenger demand and improve the customer experience. Since 1990, IAH passenger traffic has nearly quadrupled. Future of Vehicle Fueling Will Jobs Follow Work From Federal EV Infrastructure Blueprint? By Lucy Perry
This month (June), the FHWA released a blueprint for states to develop half a million charging stations, part of the Biden administration’s goal of moving from gas- to electric-powered vehicles. The White House believes that in the process the plan will create jobs for steelworkers, electrical workers and laborers to build, install and maintain the network. The vision is the installation of EV fast-charging stations every 50 miles, give or take, across the country. A uniform system drivers can use anywhere they drive, much like the highway infrastructure system, is the end of the rainbow. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said the administration wants a system that is accessible, user-friendly and available regardless of the type of vehicle or where the user lives.

Arizona Officials Allocate $18B, New Construction Included PHOENIX (AP) Arizona’s legislature approved a bipartisan $18 billion spending plan early recently that will make substantial investments in building new highways in the region. Lawmakers in the House and Senate ended a months-long impasse, working through the night to approve the budget. Only a handful of dissenters from each party voted against the package of bills, and Republican Gov. Doug Ducey was expected to approve it. “This is what our state, where voters are nearly evenly divided by party affiliation, has long asked of us — to work together,” said Rep. Reginald Bolding of Laveen, the top Democrat in the House. The improbable bipartisanship was enabled by an unprecedented surplus topping $5 billion, allowing for a broad array of new spending and savings. That includes $544 million for border security (roughly half of it for a wall) and $1 billion for highway construction, including widening Interstate 10 north of Casa Grande. State employees will get a raise, many for the first time in a decade. Hundreds of millions are set aside for water infrastructure as the state faces prolonged drought. The budget also makes a $1.1 billion deposit into the pension fund for public safety and cor-
rections officers, paying off the state’s unfunded liability for future retirement benefits. And it puts another $425 million in the rainy day fund to help the state weather a potential recession. The package of budget bills passed with overwhelming support, highly unusual in the modern era. Ducey hailed the deal, saying his policies of limited spending and regulation cuts can be credited for the surplus, although massive federal COVID-19 relief money also was a major contributor. “The result is a booming economy with record revenues,'” Ducey said in a statement. “With this budget, we’re putting those dollars to good use and investing in priorities that Republicans and Democrats alike can agree on.” Their agreement also adds $80 million in combined additional funding for Arizona State University and Northern Arizona University, bringing their funding boosts in line with additional money already allocated to University of Arizona. Lawmakers also agreed to technical changes in a formula for distributing money to schools and $4 million each for school testing and 2022 election costs. A proposed expansion of a tax credit to subsidize private school tuition was removed from the must-pass budget, likely dooming it.

Colorado Commission Approves I-270 Critical Bridge Project The Transportation Commission (TC) took an important step towards accelerating delivery on the first phase of several improvements planned for the Interstate 270 corridor, a longtime priority for statewide freight needs and partners in Adams County, Colo. Accelerating this phase of the project, which includes replacement of aging infrastructure that has exceeded its planned service life, is the first step of a multi-part approach to delivering the full project included in the Colorado Department of Transportation Ten Year Plan. The TC action meets one of several new transparency and accountability requirements in Senate Bill 21-260 for large projects procured using alternative delivery methods. In compliance with these requirements, CDOT recently held a virtual public/industry meeting with 142 members of the construction industry and the public to gain understanding of what went into making the decision to use the Construction Manager/General Contractor (CM/GC) method to rebuild eight aging bridge structures along I-270 between York Street and Vasquez Boulevard. The public and the construction industry were invited to provide comments and input on the decision to use

Five Excavator Technologies to Improve Your Bottom Line While technology has been enhancing excavator performance for more than a decade, end-user demand for certain features has accelerated in the past few years. AEM talked with leading manufacturers to get their take on those innovations that provide the typical construction company with the best bang for the buck — innovations that allow excavator operators to: • Dig and grade faster • Eliminate guesswork • Reduce fuel consumption • Enhance operator comfort • Improve safety Get to Grade in Considerably Less Time Ryan Neal, market professional and product application specialist for large excavators at Caterpillar, said 2D grade control has been a game-changer. The operator simply selects target depth and slope, and sensors and onboard processors provide real-time guidance on the distance to grade. That eliminates all of that in and out of the cab to set up stakes and lasers, oftentimes slicing an operator’s productivity in half. Matthew McLean, product manager of GPE products at Volvo Construction Equipment, said interest in 2D indicate systems has exploded over the past two years. Demand was initially driven by the typical contractor’s desire to save time. More recently, it is all about the industry-wide challenge of finding skilled workers. “A newer operator might not be as fast, but at least they’ll be on grade because the monitor screen in the cab will let them know both visibly and audibly,” McLean said. “Volvo’s system, Dig Assist is also designed to be easy to use, which is why we’ve made it standard on our 22- to 55-ton excavators. On virtually all other models, Dig Assist is an option.” Semi-Autonomous Digging, Grading Volvo calls its system Active Control and offers it as standard equipment on five excavator models: the EC220E, ECR235E, EC250E, EC300E, and ECR355E. “We’ve gone electric-over-hydraulic in the controls because we now have joysticks talking directly to computers and the valve and pump,” McLean said. “When Active Control is turned on, once you get within a window of 4 inches you can just pull back on the arm lever and the computer helps you dig.” At the basic level, Active Control controls the boom to prevent operators from overdigging. But it also can be set up to control bucket angle and can even control a tiltrotator. Operators can allow the system to control back grading and also can specify if they

need to achieve a finer or rougher (normal) grade. Finally, functionality such as swing control and swing fence help operators dig and load more efficiently while avoiding side obstacles. On that note, Caterpillar has made its swing-control technology, 2D E-Fence, standard on its excavators. This safety system uses data from position sensors to automatically stop motion when the front linkage reaches the operator-defined boundaries. Calculating Material Weight Caterpillar’s Neal points to one other game-changing technology that has come to excavators in recent years. Cat Payload uses cylinder pressure data and machine sensors to continuously calculate material weight while the excavator works. Neal recalled visiting a contractor in the Boston area recently. The contractor was using a Cat 395 excavator to dig a massive foundation. “The contractor was using both the 2D grade control and the payload system — just as we’d intended for them to be used,” Neal said. “The contractor said they loaded 136 trucks and were within 2 percent accuracy

on all of them. That almost brought a tear to my eye.” Higher Production, Lower Fuel Consumption With the right equipment and technologies, improved productivity also can result in reduced fuel costs. Doosan excavators feature two innovations that can reduce machine fuel consumption. The D-ECOPOWER system, an option on select models, features an electronically controlled pump, a closed-center main control valve and nine sensors that electronically detect and control the precise amount of hydraulic oil required to perform a task. “The exact amount of oil required is metered instead of a fixed amount continuously being forced through the system,” said Aaron Kleingartner, product and dealer mar-
keting manager of Doosan Infracore North America. “The hydraulic system output requirements are optimized with engine horsepower. The resulting efficiency reduces fuel consumption and improves productivity substantially. Improved feedback through the controls also results in an outstanding level of operator comfort and much smoother machine management.” A second innovation from Doosan is its Smart Power Control. Controlled by the ECU (engine control unit), this technology is implemented through two systems, variable speed control and pump torque control, that work together to improve efficiency while maintaining productivity. “Smart Power Control can save as much as 5-7 percent in fuel consumption,” Kleingartner said. Camera Systems Cameras also are taking excavator productivity and safety to another level. For instance, Caterpillar excavators come standard with two cameras, one on the right side and one at the rear. A four-camera system also is an option for contractors who want to maintain a 360-degree view around the excavator. Over the past five years, Doosan’s Kleingartner said technological innovation has accelerated with respect to cameras. Doosan offers a standard rearview camera and an optional side view camera. Operators can view one or both (side-by-side) on the LCD screen in the operator’s cab. “At ConExpo-Con/AGG 2020, Doosan previewed its newest camera system, an allaround view monitoring system [AVM], that gives operators a 360-degree view of their surroundings,” Kleingartner said. Five unique perspectives can be seen from the separate AVM monitor: top view, rear view, top-right view, rear-corner view and 3D view. Volvo’s McLean also agreed camera systems have come a long way. The company began adding backup cameras more than a decade ago. Most recently, in 2020, Volvo Smart View was developed and has since been made standard on Volvo general purpose excavators (EC140 and larger). Now the industry is beginning to work on a camera system that warns the operator when certain movement is detected, McLean pointed out. Additionally, the future of excavator tech is likely to include increased adoption of things like 3D grade control, remote control operation, and even certain levels of autonomous operation. But as of right now, more construction contractors are making better use of game-changing technologies that have been available and continually improved for years.

Michael C. Liptak, Founder of ALL, Passes Away at 91 The principal architect of the heavy lift equipment rental category and driving force behind The ALL Family of Companies has passed away. Michael C. Liptak was 91. Together with his wife, Marvine, and brothers, Lawrence and Jake, Mr. Liptak founded ALL Erection & Crane Rental in Cleveland, Ohio, with just a single crane in 1964. Through the decades, it grew into the largest privately held crane rental company in North America, boasting 33 branches across the continent, a fleet of more than 3,500 cranes and an employee roster totaling more than 1,500. At the time of ALL’s founding, most contractors had to purchase and maintain their own cranes. Mr. Liptak and his inner circle saw a customer need, bought their own crane, and began renting it. In the process, they created a new category — crane rental — and backed it with hard work, reliable products and outstanding customer service, according to the company. Mr. Liptak was a blue-collar guy from a blue-collar city, and he built his business through sweat, time and a handshake that was his bond. In the world Mr. Liptak and his brothers grew up in, nothing came easy, but he wanted to make life a little easier for the working people who relied on heavy lift equipment to do their jobs — because he was one of them. Up until his final days, Mr. Liptak was still involved in daily life at ALL, visiting branches and offering his advice and expertise. He was well known to weigh in on critical — or even seemingly mundane — business issues, because even if he had handed off the mantle of responsibility, he never stopped carrying the weight of his life work. He pushed those around him to be the best they could be. And he could be that type of leader because there wasn’t a thing he hadn’t done. “Before there was an ALL Crane, there was a man driving
dump trucks in a quarry,” said Mr. Liptak’s son, Michael L. Liptak, current CEO and president of the company. “He drove trucks, operated cranes, fixed cranes when they broke and saved enough to buy new ones when they were needed. From that foundation, he built everything we know here at ALL.” Known to many as “Big Mike,” he never stopped being excited about the basics of the business, perhaps best characterized by the kid-like way he felt compelled to go out and operate any new crane the company had acquired. You can’t keep an operator out of the seat, and Mr. Liptak was an operator at heart. Mr. Liptak was about balance, too. “Everything Dad did was for the thousands upon thousands for whom he provided jobs over the years,” added Michael L. Liptak. “That was never lost on me or the rest of the second- and now third-generation family working at ALL. We were all lucky to have the shade of his mighty shadow.” Liptak credited his father’s vision for helping to guide the company to its current success. Always about balance, he said his father knew that steady growth coupled with impeccable quality were the keys to longevity. His instincts proved correct, as the company he founded approaches its 60th year. Liptak also recalls a driven man who always had time for family. “Everyone here is treated like family — and many actual families make ALL their life’s work,” he said. “The family feeling extends to our customers and suppliers as well. That all started with Dad. He created a place where everyone was welcome, and the sky was the limit as far as advancement. He’s my inspiration, both as a leader and a person. To say he will be missed is a monumental understatement.” Michael C. Liptak was preceded in death by his brother, Jake, who died in 2021.

AEC Pros Focus On Driving Biz With 360-Degree Cameras
Technology is playing an important role in multiple workflows across the architecture, engineering and construction industries, with most frequent usage for project management and oversight, building design and building construction.
The pandemic has driven the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industries to adopt new technologies in order to keep projects on track and a step ahead in an increasingly digital world. One technology being quickly adopted by this professional set are 360-degree cameras — which according to a new survey conducted by RICOH THETA are owned or used by almost half of all respondents, with 79 percent of them utilizing the cameras for work. The survey, fielded by Dynata to industry professionals, explored the usage of tech devices such as cameras, smartphones and other platforms/software commonly used by AEC professionals. Technology is playing an important role in multiple workflows across these professions with most frequent usage for project management and oversight (72 percent), building design (54 percent) and building construction (51 percent). However, despite an increasing reliance on general photography and video technology, these devices often fall short on delivering the professional’s desired results. Some key issues identified in the survey when it comes to more traditional imaging include: • Lack of high image quality (30 percent) • Cumbersome image sharing processes (28 percent) • Insufficient image capture range for properly capturing an entire space (26 percent) Addressing some of these challenges, 360-degree
cameras are compact, beginner-friendly devices with simple interfaces that can capture entire spaces with a single button press. Image quality is often quite high among quality 360-degree cameras, with some models containing sensors that capture highresolution imagery even in dim or poorly lit environments. Another common feature among recent 360 cameras is pairing with smartphones via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth that enables easier image viewing and sharing. Given these features, the survey identified that more than ¾ of respondents believe that 360degree cameras would work better for them, particularly for: • Documenting jobsite progress (57 percent) • Recording site environment (55 percent) • Sharing details/progress with colleagues (52 percent) • Sharing details/progress with clients (50 percent) “At RICOH THETA, we are continually working to innovate products that meet the needs of our core customers,” said Shinobu Fujiki, general manager of RICOH Company’s THETA Business division. “We recognize that the AEC market is ripe for 360-degree technology adoption, so we conducted this research to better understand workflows, and in turn, find solutions that help design professionals do their jobs more effectively.” For more information, visit theta360.com.

Mecalac North America Expands Sales, Service Teams
Mecalac North America’s sales and service teams continue to grow as the company celebrates five years in the United States and Canada. Team members pictured include (L-R) Gina Mazzotta, Vincent Talotta, Peter Bigwood, Adrien Thomas, Sarah Brixi, Greg Bouvier, Geoffrey Andrews and Mike Shireman.
Mecalac, a global designer, manufacturer and distributor of compact construction equipment for urban environments, celebrated five years as an incorporated company in the North American market. To support its rapidly growing dealer network and increased demand for the company’s compact and rail excavators, loaders, backhoe loaders and site dumpers, Mecalac North America has expanded its sales and service teams and is actively recruiting additional team members. “North America has been very receptive to Mecalac and recognizes the value our products bring to the market,” said Peter Bigwood, general manager of Mecalac North America. “As more dealers come on board and more machines are operating throughout the U.S. and Canada, it’s critical to continue delivering a high level of service and support. Now is the right time to expand our North American team.” As part of this growth, Manuel “Manny” Mendez has joined the sales team, bringing experience with major equipment brands, including Merlo and Manitou. Mendez started his career as a material handling specialist at Linder Industrial Machinery Company of Plant City, Fla. Bomag Unveils New Technologies, Easy Level System Bomag recently showcased multiple pieces of milling, paving and compaction equipment from its vast product portfolio, showing the depth of its commitment to the asphalt industry. With its 350-hp (260-kW) MTU engine meeting Tier IV Final/Stage V emissions standards, the new Bomag BM 1200/35-2 mill offers power and productivity. The new mill is more productive with its 164-ft./min maximum milling speed and gets around the site faster with its 410-ft./min transport speed. Machine design optimizes engine output to milling speed to increase milling efficiency, and three milling drum speeds — 85, 95 and 107 rpm — help fine tune cutting speeds to jobsite conditions. With Bomag’s easy level system, a large 7-in. screen displays all major operating parameters while milling to offer intuitive leveling and control of milling functions. The new BM 1200/35-2 offers a 47.2-in. cutting width and maximum 13-in. cutting depth. Material is efficiently moved from the cutter housing to haul trucks via 25.6-in. wide inside and 23.6-in. wide outside conveyors at capacities reaching 235 cu. ft. per hour. Offering a maximum discharge height of 224.4 in., the conveyor swivels 45 degrees to the left and right. The optional Bomag ion dust shield supplements dust extraction by capturing up to 88 percent of fine dust particles less than 10 µm. The BM 600/15-2 compact mill comes in 3- and 4-wheel designs and features machine leveling sensors integrated into the mill’s side plate cylinders. A 7-in. full graphic color display offers intuitive operation and leveling control for efficient mill set-up. With a range of quick-exchange drum designs available in widths from 3.15 to 23.6 in., the BM 600/15-2 offers a maximum 23.6-in. cutting width. technologies for complete compaction documentation. For Bomag rollers equipped with JOBLINK, BOMAP logs and transfers Evib values, temperature, frequency, amplitude and other compaction values. Integrating BOMAP into Bomag AsphaltPro enables the fully digital construction site, while BOMAP Connect offers parallel planning of different projects in BOMAP, including simple site and resource planning. With its 84.1-in. compaction width, the highway class BW206 AD-5 AM tandem vibratory roller features a large, 55.1-in. drum diameter that puts more impact surface area in contact with the asphalt to prevent mat pushing and shoving. Integrating the highly versatile asphalt manager (AM) compaction system, the BW 206 AD-5 AM can efficiently complete breakdown, intermediate and finish rolling on highproduction applications. Requiring the operator to input only layer thickness, the system continually measures compaction progress and automatically adjusts front drum vibration between true vertical and horizontal as mat stiffness increases. Setting vibration mode to oscillation makes the roller well suited to compact joints, bridges and around structures sensitive to vibration forces. Asphalt Paver Range Bomag offers a full range of pavers to tackle projects from cart paths and parking lots to rural roads and the mainline. The BF 200 C-2 track paver features a narrow 44-in. track width that fits in the cut of a 4-ft. mill to boost paving efficiency for mill-and-fill applications. It offers base paving widths ranging from 3.6 to 6.6 ft., while extensions with quick coupling technology and a locking wedge-and-socket design quickly increases paving widths to 11.2 ft (3.4 m). Bomag MAGMALIFE technology casts heating elements into a single aluminum block for superior thermal conductivity, resulting in fast screed heat-up time to paving temperatures with uniform heat distribution. A large 5-ton hopper capacity provides extended paving intervals between loads. Bomag’s highway-class 10-ft. paver, the Bomag CR 1030 T, features Smartrac, which automatically maintains proper track tension at all times to significantly increase track life and decrease downtime. Dual swing-out operator stations feature Bomag’s SIDEVIEW innovation that offers unobstructed views to the sides of the paver and screed end gate. Frame raise and three-point suspension mitigate segregation issues, improve mat quality and work to provide superior traction. Equipped with the Stretch 20 hydraulically extendible screed, the CR 1030 T offers infinitely variable paving widths from 10 to 20 ft. and a maximum 30-ft. paving width with extensions. Its screed assist system eliminates screed settling to improve mat smoothness. For more information, visit www.bomag.com/us.

Tips to Initiate Strategy...
How Sustainability Works for Your Contracting Company Sustainability is a growing concern for all segments of the economy, including construction and paving companies. Not only because of the environmental impact on the community, but for the economic impact on companies as well. In its World of Asphalt 2022 session “Developing a Sustainability Program that Works for Your Company,” University of Nevada Reno Professor Adam Hand and Granite Construction Sustainability Manager Raven Adams made the case for asphalt pavement and infrastructure construction companies to develop a sustainability program, and how to approach it. According to Hand and Adams, over the past 30 years, a dollar invested in a company with a high commitment in sustainability will have grown 47 percent more than that same dollar invested in a peer company without a high commitment to sustainability. Why? In the case of infrastructure companies, Adams and Hand cite the Inter-American Development Bank saying, in 2018, that sustainability infrastructure projects “are planned, designed, constructed, operated and decommissioned in a manner to ensure economic and financial, social, environmental and institutional sustainability over the entire life cycle of the project.” In other words, it is a smart way to eliminate waste and maximize value at every stage of a project. Adams said at Granite Construction, the Watsonville, Calif.-based infrastructure contractor celebrating its 100th
anniversary this year, sustainability is integrated into each project in the form of social responsibility, environmental stewardship and dependable governance because it delivers

enduring economic value. She said that incorporation of sustainability principles not only helps them reduce costs and waste, but helps them develop new market opportunities, and attract, engage and retain talent, a key concern among all companies that work
in the various trades. Ultimately, Adams said there were five lessons learned at Granite to both initiating a sustainability strategy, and making it work for everyone: 1. Lead with the value proposition. Sustainability isn’t just good for the environment, it’s good for the bottom line as well. 2. Connect the right teams. Different teams will have different responsibilities and contributions to both create and implement the plan. Knowing who they are and what they can do ahead of time will lead to a greater chance of success. 3. Educate your stakeholders to generate buy-in. As the saying goes, “A person convinced against their will is of the same opinion still.” Making sure an organization’s stakeholders are properly educated and bought-in will help lead to sustainable success. 4. Understand the psychology of goal setting. Businesses are no stranger to setting goals for performance but knowing why goals exist will lead to more productive, and attainable, goals being set. 5. Understand the organization’s data systems to measure for continuous improvement. Knowing an organization’s data systems will help with understanding what can be measured, and what can be improved. For more education on sustainability, ConExpoCon/AGG, running March 14 to 18, 2023, at the Las Vegas Convention Center, has its own sustainability track for education sessions.

Redefining Traditional MTV Tech With Dynapac Feeder Dynapac showcased its iMIX technology enabled MF2500CS feeder at the World of Asphalt tradeshow. The IMIX system made its debut on Dynapac’s MF2500CS mobile feeder, featuring a versatile belt system, intelligent operator assistance systems and flexibility to configure the machine for the right application. IMIX Technology The heart of the IMIX-system is the combination of three strategically positioned devices: a conical auger in the hopper, a flow divider in the conveyor and a mixing system at the end of the main conveyor. The augers in the hopper push the large particles, which are stagnant at the colder outer sections on the hopper towards the middle of the conveyor to join the main flow. The material is transported by the movement of the belt to the top, where the flow of material is split by a flow divided into two streams. These streams of material are mixed and blended by an auger mixing system. This equalizes temperatures within the mix and blends large and small stones. The result is consistent and long-lasting road quality, according to the manufacturer. Smart Belt Conveyor Design The feeder’s rubber belt is mounted directly on metal stiffeners. This allows longer intervals for belt changes and a higher reliability reducing the total operating costs. The newly positioned spraying beam under the front hopper flap guarantees a permanent wet feeder belt. This prevents adhesion with difficult mixes and weather conditions, according to the manufacturer. The feeder belt is held in place by chain rollers. The new belt is attached to the old one with a quick coupling system and fed in place. This design makes a feeder belt change possible within a couple of hours. No vulcanization is needed,. For large paving widths, the Dynapac MF2500 delivers a feeding capacity of up to 4,000 tons per hour. The feeder also delivers a cleaning time of less than 30 minutes. Operator Comfort The MF2500CS MTV’s hydraulic liftable platform elevates the operator area approximately 4 ft. with a touch of a button providing a 360-degree complete jobsite view. The truck assist feature makes truck docking/un-docking to the feeder simple and efficient and eliminates the dump person from the job site. As well, a series of LED bar lights signals the truck driver when to back up, dump the material and when to leave.
The dashboard of the MF2500CS features a large 7-in. screen that displays vital feeder parameters. Three cameras that are well positioned allow the operator to see the front and rear of the feeder and the paver hopper area always providing optimal visibility around the feeder. Investment Flexibility MF2500CS may be equipped with the SW6500 SwingApp conveyor for long side reach for paving over barriers and in-line or echelon paving applications. Dynapac MF2500CS is the only machine that offers this flexibility of adding Swing app at the initial time of purchase or at later date, the manufacturer said. The newly developed 28 ft. long conveyor SW6500 has a side reach of 12.5 ft. Due to its integrated quick coupling cylinders and lifting points, the SW6500 can be mounted behind any MF2500CS within 20 minutes. This reduces investment cost for the contractors. Distance Assist Maintaining a safe distance between the material feeder and paver — while docking to the truck to the feeder and paver simultaneously — can be a daunting task. Dynapac Distance Assist automatically maintains a set distance between the paver and feeder. The feeder is equipped with a laser sensor, which allows the feeder operator to virtually connect to the paver and follow the speed of the paver movement. The feeder operator can focus on the job at hand which is material transfer. Combined with the possibility to save multiple distances, feeding two pavers becomes less stressful with the Dynapac MF2500CS equipped with the SwingApp. To keep the paver operator informed, the feeder is equipped with a LED bar, which shows the status of the radar sensor and the deviation to the correct distance. Swing Assist Feeding two pavers simultaneous is often demanding for the feeder operator. Via the SwingApp, Dynapac Swing Assist helps the operator by recording the height and angle of swing for both pavers’ locations, allowing the operator to recall the positions by just the press of a button. In combination with Distance Assist the feeder drives automatically to the correct position and the SwingApp moves directly over the hopper of the paver. For more information, visit www.dynapac.us.

ILJA Provides States With Funds for EV Charging Stations CHARGING from page 1
That would mean charging stations with a mile of major highways, easily located online or through an app. The stations would be configured with enough outlets to avoid long waits to charge. User fees would be similar across the system. Setting the Stage According to the department of transportation, the proposed rule would establish the groundwork for states to build federallyfunded charging station projects across a national EV charging network. The standards also establish workforce requirements for installation, maintenance and operations to increase the safety and reliability of charging station function and use and create and support good-paying, highlyskilled jobs across the country. Earlier this year, the Biden administration earmarked approximately $5 billion for states over the next five years to build out a national EV charging network. “To support the transition to electric vehicles, we must build a national charging network that makes finding a charge as easy as filling up at a gas station,” said Buttigieg. “These new ground rules will help create a network of EV chargers across the country that are convenient, affordable, reliable and accessible for all Americans.” The IIJA provides states with the funding and framework to build out a reliable charging network, said Stephanie Pollack, deputy federal highway administrator. “This is a foundational step that will provide EV drivers with predictable access to reliable electric vehicle charging access across the United States.” States will develop their EV deployment plans in concert with the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation, established by the infrastructure act. The agency is providing direct technical assistance and support to states with the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program. “We’re making sure that charging stations are easily and equally accessible, allowing every American to get coast to coast in an electric vehicle,” said Jennifer M. Granholm, secretary of energy. “The investments will not only build an interconnected national charging network, but also boost local economies and strengthen our independence from fossil fuels.” Big Picture FHWA released other resources to help states complete deployment plans and access funding to build out the charging network. These include new program questions and answers and a new tool to help evaluate the best locations for charging stations when it may not be possible to install at the required
50-mile intervals. Charging stations would contain a minimum number and type of chargers capable of supporting drivers’ fast charging needs. Additionally, rules would require consistency regarding the installation, operation and maintenance of projects to provide the traveling public with reliable charging expectations. The proposed rule would further specify the required minimum density of provided chargers, payment methods and requirements for customer support services. Proposed rules also will set strong certification standards for the workers installing, operating and maintaining electric vehicle chargers, said DOT, ensuring funds support good-paying, high-quality jobs and chargers are installed by a highly-skilled, professional workforce. The proposed rule also will support workforce development and on-the-job training, “building the clean-energy workforce of the future.” Other proposed requirements would help create a seamless national network of EV charging infrastructure that could communicate and operate on the same software platforms from one state to another. They would address traffic control devices and on-premise signage; data submittal requirements to help create a public EV charging database; and network connectivity requirements to allow for secure remote monitoring, diagnostics, control. Additionally, the FHWA proposes standardized communication of charging price and availability to help consumers make informed decisions about trip planning and when and where to charge their EVs. Building the Grid Ken Thomson of Facility Builders believes building EV charging stations enables the contractor to facilitate a host of people transferring their vehicular power away from fossil fuels and toward electricity. “As accessibility to recharging stations continues to grow, the momentum is apt to snowball.” The construction is relatively straightforward, he said. Most of the interfaces are prepackaged units available from several suppliers. The contractor’s job is to set up the interface, ensure that all standards and safety regulations are met and work out parking and accessibility options with the station owner. “Comparatively, natural gas filling stations are more complicated to construct, primarily due to accommodating the tank, controlling moisture content and the greater number of interfacing options to choose among.” Of course, details have to be worked out and choices made in the process of building. Whether the installation is public or pri-
vate, residential or commercial, the number of parking spaces with access to charging interfaces must all be determined. One also has to calculate charging capacity, determine means of access and set the charging standard, he said. A private station is appropriate for commercial vehicle fleets and also for individually assigned use at residences or places of employment. Public accessibility implies the need for an interface equipped with a universal form of billing. Public stations also need to provide more than one charging level option. “Often when a new technology is introduced into an existing environment, some amount of alteration is necessary,” said Thomson. In the case of bringing EV charge capability to a building, one may be laying extra conduit, adjusting electrical loads and changing parking assignments. For multiple users, such as in a condominium or office building, additional measures might mean individualizing power usage records. “Construction contracts in such cases need to spell out the terms of tenant improvements, especially if uninterrupted continual use of the space during construction is required.” Other issues EV charging station owners should discuss with their general contractor include off-grid solutions, which can be installed under certain circumstances. Examples are solar panels mounted on carports, rooftops or stand-alone structures. “In some cases, unused power can be sold back to the utility,” said Thomson. “Another option is to connect to a special EV network grid, the power for which is 100 percent from renewable energy sources.” For on-grid applications, it may be possible to implement a “smart grid” arrangement whereby charging is reduced at peak load hours or initiated at low-cost times. It’s crucial for all types of businesses to think about how they can become part of the new fueling network, believes ChargePoint, an EV infrastructure company. Rich Quattrini, vice president of customer solutions, said fuel retailers face a particularly urgent need to modernize operations to remain relevant and expand revenue generation opportunities. “Organizations need to carefully choose and design their fuel retailing sites, especially when it comes to DC fast-charging,” said Quattrini. Before even getting started with site design, though, a contractor will want to fully understand what to plan for. Here are Quattrini’s seven suggested considerations: 1. How much electrical supply will be needed?
Based on location and the volume of EV charging expected, the charging partner and utility can help estimate and request the type of electrical service and amount of power from the utility. 2. How much space is available for infrastructure? Along with evaluating electrical needs, the amount of space available where that space is relative to other infrastructure, must be considered. Scaling to serve and provide fuel for a whole new set of drivers, think about where to put new electrical panels, remote power cabinets, conduit runs and the charging stations themselves. 3. What are the accessibility laws in the area? How will path of travel be accounted for? Make sure to understand the accessibility requirements for the DC fast-charging installation jurisdiction. Where necessary, ensure appropriate access aisles as well as clear pathways into a convenience store from at least one charging stations. Think about wheelchair-accessible charging stations, curbs and tripping hazards to ensure convenient and safe customer flow. 4. How can finding and using chargers be simplified? Lighting and signage are likely already in place on a gas fueling forecourt. Consider additional signage, online access and an app for wayfinding. 5. How will both commercial and passenger vehicles be served? As larger EVs will visit a location, consider whether access by vehicles of all types will be allowed. How a site is configured will depend on what types of vehicles will be charging and where the charging ports are located. For most passenger vehicles, simply pulling or backing into a spot is the most desirable configuration. For larger vehicles, commercial vehicles or vehicles towing trailers, consider pull-through configurations for EV charging. Significant space is needed, so that can also factor into the layout. 6. What will be your next phase of fast charging site development? While new technology will enable future EVs to charge at higher speeds, continued support of older EVs will also be critical. Avoid overbuilding, but put in a flexible solution that can expand over time when there are enough drivers to support payback on investment. 7. How will the project be funded and what can impact the return on investment? EV charging is the future of fueling. Keep in mind funding regulations including locating charging sites in specific areas and offering a minimum charging speed. CEG

Doosan Expands Its -7 Series Wheel Loader Line With Three New Machines Doosan Infracore North America is introducing three additional models of its next-generation -7 Series wheel loaders in the United States and Canada. These new 200 size class machines include many of the same features as the larger models and are now available at Doosan dealerships. Similar to the -7 Series wheel loaders that were launched in spring 2021, this next generation of Doosan wheel loaders offer all-new redesigned cabs with first-class comfort features, increased bucket capacities and new fuel-saving technologies, according to the manufacturer. The three new models — the DL200-7, DL220-7 and DL250-7 — are smaller than the models launched last year. They have standard bucket capacities between 2.6 and 3.3 cu. yds. All three new models are available with a high-lift option for additional dump height and reach. “We’re excited to offer a -7 Series iteration of our popular 200 size class wheel loaders in North America,” said Aaron Kleingartner, product and dealer marketing manager, Doosan Infracore North America. “These are among our most popular wheel loader models because of their versatility. It’s quite common for customers with these machines to purchase a hydraulic quick coupler for fast and easy attachment changes.” Markets, Applications These smaller models are most commonly used on construction sites, specifically for loading, grading and site prep work. They’re also operated in scrap and recycling applications where they may be paired with a grapple attachment for handling bulk materials. Agriculture producers rely on this size of wheel loader for tasks like feeding cattle and managing manure. Grounds maintenance companies often prefer this size of wheel loader for clearing parking lots with a snow pusher or a bucket for placing snow in trucks for removal. New Exclusive Technology Each model of the -7 Series wheel loader can be equipped with an optional transparent bucket, a Doosan-exclusive technology that offers a supplemental view from a monitor inside the cab to improve operator visibility and productivity. The transparent bucket has two cameras with protective guarding, one mounted high and one mounted low on the front of the machine. “We anticipate that the transparent bucket will be a popular option for our Doosan -7 Series wheel loaders,” Kleingartner said. “Another new technology available in our newest Doosan wheel loaders is situation awareness technology (SAT). The technology helps save fuel by automatically adjusting the engine output in real time to the needs of the drivetrain and hydraulics. It lowers fuel consumption without reducing performance.” Additional Doosan -7 Series wheel loader technologies available in the 200 size class machines include the following. • The Doosan Smart Guidance System analyzes operator driving habits and provides tips on the Doosan Smart Touch display during operation to increase efficiency. • An improved Load Isolation System improves wheel loader stability while moving, which can reduce cycle times, increase productivity and boost fuel efficiency. • The new Doosan Smart Load weighing system tells the
operator the weight of material in the bucket. All menus and settings are integrated into the Doosan Smart Touch screen. • The Doosan Smart Key is a key fob that can unlock the cab and allow push-button engine starting. DL200-7: Hydrostatic Drive The new Doosan DL200-7 wheel loader features a hydrostatic drive system for enhanced fuel efficiency, machine positional control and reduced wear on the brakes. The traction control management system allows operators to easily adjust traction force to match jobsite conditions. This helps reduce wheel slippage for more efficient digging, stockpiling and loading. Doosan DL200-7 operators may choose from the following traction modes. • Max: Provides maximum traction force • Traction control: Allows the wheel loader operator to choose from three levels of reduced traction forces to match jobsite conditions • S-Mode: Helps when operating on slippery roadway conditions Wheel loader operators may instantly return to the machine’s Max traction mode by pressing the kick-down button on the joystick control. Volvo Construction Equipment announced new functionality for Load Assist, a productivity program run on the co-pilot tablet in the cab of Volvo CE wheel loaders.
Volvo Expands Load Assist Features for Wheel Loaders Volvo Construction Equipment has launched new functions on its wheel loader productivity software, Load Assist. The updates include new modes within the on-board weighing app, the operator coaching advanced app and quick tips. “These enhancements will help operators get even more from their Volvo wheel loader, and they add to the existing core functionality of Load Assist, which 10,000 operators have benefitted from to date,” said Eric Yeomans, product manager, wheel loaders at Volvo CE. “We are continuously evolving our Assist programs, and customers can expect further upgrades in the future.” New Weighing Modes Load Assist is a suite of apps operated by the Volvo copilot in-cab display. One of the most popular apps is onboard weighing, which provides real-time insight into the bucket’s load within +/-1 percent accuracy. Getting started with the app has never been easier due to the new simple mode, which limits on-board weighing to three core functions: viewing the current load in trip mode, viewing the loaded weight and printing a simplified receipt. Another new feature of on-board weighing is low load mode, which allows operators to weigh lighter materials and loads than with previous iterations. Operator Coaching, Leveled Up As machines become more advanced, the operator coaching app has helped operators understand how their actions influence machine productivity, fuel efficiency and wear, to ensure they are working in a way that delivers optimum results. Operator coaching now includes a host of advanced features, including two new views. The productivity view allows operators to monitor tons moved per gallon, tons moved per hour and fuel consumed per hour. This can be displayed as a total for the entire work shift, including idle time or only for the active work. It also can be broken down according to short cycles or load and carry cycles. A new utilization view displays an overview of the time spent, productivity achieved and fuel consumed during dif-

ferent tasks (e.g., the amount of fuel consumed by travel or the percentage of time spent idling). Another new feature of the advanced package is operator tips. This provides feedback at the end of a shift, including a QR code that links to a relevant instructional video on anything that can be improved. Quick tips is another new tool that shows messages on how to use specific apps and functions found within the Volvo co-pilot display. Expanded Tire Pressure Monitoring System Availability The tire pressure monitoring system, introduced in 2020 on Volvo L110H to L350H wheel loaders, is now available for the L60H, L70H and L90H models. This system allows the operator to easily check the condition of the tires from the comfort of the cab. With real-time information on tire pressure and temperature, the operator can ensure that tires are operating within the correct parameters. If not, the operator receives an alert and visual display showing which tire needs attention. The integrated system saves time during machine inspections while also helping to secure the highest levels of tire life, fuel efficiency, machine performance and operator comfort. Yanmar Compact Equipment’s line of compact wheel loaders, which includes the V4-7, V8, V10 and V12, are built for maximum efficiency and ease of operation. The machines include comfort features across the line, including a comfortable, spacious cab and dual doors for easy entry from each side. Their combination of power, comfort and compactness make them ideal for applications that require fast travel speeds, high lift capacity and a small turning radius, according to the manufacturer. All four models come with Yanmar’s signature reliability standards and a 3-year/3,000-hour warranty. “Our loaders fill a critical niche for landscaping, ag, construction, snow removal and rock quarries,” said Jeff Pate, director of sales of Yanmar Compact Equipment North America. “For contractors, having reliable, high-performing machines in this size class is a crucial component to being successful.” Performance Yanmar Compact Equipment’s wheel loaders are engineered for high performance in a compact package. Operating weights for the line range from 8,422 to 15,432 lbs. The loaders feature bucket capacities ranging from 0.65 to 2.35 cu. yds. and lift capacities of 7,451 to 15,962 poundforce. Fast travel speeds, ranging from 11.8 to 22 mph, improve jobsite productivity. Comfort The Yanmar Compact Equipment compact wheel loaders bring operator comfort to the forefront with a cab experience that includes high visibility, a suspension seat and full climate control. All models feature two doors for easy entry from either side and maximum ventilation. The machines offer smooth off-road operation due to an oscillating rear axle that securely transmits traction force to uneven ground. This keeps the bucket level in operation and reduces operator fatigue. The V8, V10 and V12 come standard with enclosed cabs designed to reduce operator fatigue. Cabs are rubber-mounted for a smoother ride and feature a comfortable seat with lumbar support, cushioning and an extra high backrest. The V4-7 is available in both open- and closed-cab configurations.

Reliability Backing up their claim of maximum reliability, Yanmar Compact Equipment offers a 3-year/3,000-hour bumper-tobumper warranty on its entire line of compact wheel loaders. A central lubrication system is available as an option for the V8, V10 and V12. This option provides constant lubrication while the machine is running, virtually eliminating the risk of contamination. Maintenance kits that provide common maintenance and wear part replacement items conveniently in one place are available for all compact wheel loaders in the line. The loaders feature maximum serviceability, with convenient access to service items allowing for long maintenance intervals. For more information, visit Yanmar.com/us/products/construction/.

Improvements at IAH Mark Largest Investment in 50 Years HOUSTON from page 1
The planning, design and preconstruction of the upgrades are complete and construction is approximately one-fourth finished. Steven Andersen, ITRP executive program manager, is overseeing the construction at the airport. “Our goal is to support Houston Airports’ vision to make IAH airport a five-star airport,” he said. “This past January, William P. Hobby Airport became the first airport in North America to receive a 5-star designation from the Skytrax ratings organization. We would like to see IAH, currently a 4star airport, also achieve 5 stars and the success of ITRP is a significant component in making that happen.” Andersen and his team have their eyes on the details while they keep the big picture in mind. “Houston is the fourth-largest city in the country and serves as a logistics hub,” he said. “We want to make sure the airport is keeping up. An airport has an enormous economic impact on a city. We are building capacity for the airport as well as making it possible to have an awesome passenger experience. Construction at the concourse will have new technologies, modern concessions, local artwork and aesthetically pleasing design.” Construction at a large, busy airport is always tricky. It usually begins with demolition of the old before new structures can rise. Construction planners for the redevelopment work very hard to minimize the impact on operations and the busy airport traffic. The massive project began in 2019 with most of the demolition completed a year later. COVID caused air traffic to decrease and enabled workers to advance the demolition with less interference with airline traffic. The demolition of Terminal C North will make way for six new widebody aircraft gates that can accommodate larger aircraft that can fly greater distances and bring additional business to the city. The demolition included leveling the Terminal D/E parking garage. Workers were able to recycle 53,000 tons of concrete and 2,000 tons of metal. The project will include updating the existing Mickey Leland International Terminal (MLIT) and constructing the new International Terminal Processor between Terminals D and E. This new area will consolidate baggage claims, security checkpoints and international ticketing counters. The completed international terminal will include two concourses and encompass passenger boarding, retail and dining. The demolition process required specialized equipment as
The massive project began in 2019 with most of the demolition completed a year later. COVID caused air traffic to decrease and enabled workers to advance the demolition with less interference with airline traffic.
Project Challenges Building the foundation for the new terminal began with identifying utilities and new facilities systems. “One of our biggest challenges was working in a live operational environment, especially around the fuel systems and ensuring that no debris remained where it could be sucked up into any of the aircraft engines,” said Andersen. “One of our prime concerns was to maintain safety for passengers and our workers.”
Andersen also has been pleased by the effective collaboration between the 70 contractors working on the project, many of whom compete against each other in other projects. “We have had great productivity and compiled an excellent safety record,” Andersen said. Workers drilled piles 75-ft. deep for the new foundation. Two types of concrete were required for the project: one for the terminal and a second type for the airfield pavements near the new terminal. A project of this magnitude and cost has required input from city officials. “We have had several reviews and updates with the city council and kept the mayor informed of our progress,” said Andersen. The city controller audited the program in 2020 and in 2021. Accounting firm BDO stated, “We found that ITRP appears to run a very tight ship.” The firm also stated that ITRP as being in the top 5 percent of programs audited by the large firm. Many airports are located near water and have been endangered by flooding. IAH, like many facilities, continues to be threatened by the changing weather patterns, specifically flooding. IAH was impacted by the massive flooding caused by Tropical Storm Imelda in 2019. Construction planners have that in mind and have built the new concourse and baggage handling above 100-year and 500-year flood levels. In addition, the new construction focuses on directing the water away from the airport and into the drainage system. Workers also have upgraded drainage channels to capture excess water and direct it into waterways and detention ponds. The construction team installed several unique features in the airport to better serve customers. “The baggage systems are state-of-the-art,” said Andersen. “The sterile corridor walkways are one-of-akind structures specifically fabricated in our laydown yards and will be transported on-site for installation.” Jarrett Simmons, chief infrastructure officer, is pleased with the construction progress at the airport. “Our ITRP team is diligently working to construct and seamlessly blend a new international concourse with our 30-year-old international terminal which will be fully modernized,” Simmons said. “From a passenger perspective, the look, feel and experience of the combined building will be very impressive and unlike anything that they have ever seen at a Houston Airport System facility.” (All photos courtesy of IAH.) Project planners believe the new development will allow the airport to meet passenger demand and improve the customer experience, aimig to earn a 5-star rating from the Skytrax ratings organization.

Iron Auction’s Never-Fired Carbon Alloy Plant for Sale
Iron Auction Group is bringing a new/never fired plant to absolute auction on July 14, 2022, at 10 a.m., offering both online and live bidding. The plant, which is owned by Jackson County Development Authority (formerly leased to Carbonyx International USA), was designed to produce a carbon alloy product used to produce steel, a coke substitute offering both lower production costs and a more environmentally friendly coke type product. Due to unforeseen circumstances, after complete construction this plant was never put into production. Due to the complex construction of this plant, the components can have a variety of operating duties that can be used across multiple industries. The equipment that makes up this plant are as follows — coal dryer, belt conveyors, hoppers, filter packs, dust collector, blowers, screw conveyor, raw material tower, cooling system, bag housing and pulsing system. Questions regarding this plant are to be directed to Jared McGaffee at 276/202-6800 or by email jared@ironauctiongroup.com. For more information, visit www.ironauctiongroup.com.
Conveniently located for sellers in the Permian Basin, West Texas, the Panhandle & New Mexico. Address: Iron Bound Solutions LLC 750 US HWY 180 Seminole, TX 79360 Phone: 432-209-5112

R
itchie Bros. conducted its second Fort Worth, Texas, auction of the year in May, selling more than $60 million of equipment and trucks for 700-plus consignors. The three-day online auction saw gross transaction value grow approximately 9 percent year over year. More than 11,100 bidders from over 60 countries registered to participate in the May 17 to 19, 2022 online auction, with approximately 93 percent of the equipment purchased by Americans, including 38 percent sold to Texans. The remaining 7 percent of the assets were purchased by international buyers from as far away as Brazil, Thailand and Australia. “We saw a ton of interested buyers come through our auction yard leading up to the event, inspecting and testing items in person prior to bidding from their home, office, or mobile phone,” said Chuck Roberson, regional sales manager, Ritchie Bros. “We continue to drive strong pricing for late-model equipment, including an unused 2022 K-Tec scraper pan that sold for $205,000, with 100 percent of the proceeds donated by the OEM to Habitat for Humanity.” More than 4,350 equipment items and trucks were sold in the auction. “Thank you to all our consignors and buyers for continuing to put your trust in Ritchie Bros.,” said Roberson. “We hope to see many of you at our site in July for our next big Fort Worth event. I encourage interested sellers to contact us today so we can begin marketing your assets to the world.”
