Six Ways Electric Revolution Is Transforming How We Work A quiet revolution is taking place. Electric machines are here. As well as being better for the environment, they’re also opening up opportunities for new ways of working, allowing environments beyond traditional construction sites to get the job done with less noise, fewer vibrations and no exhaust fumes. Not only can an electric machine do everything a diesel can, but it also can do other jobs a diesel can’t, due to reduced noise and zero emissions. So while electric machines are allowing us to do today’s jobs better, they are also allowing new jobs, environments and markets to be opened up due to electromobility. 1. Urban By 2030, there will be 8.6 billion people on the planet, 70 percent of whom will live in cities. Urban noise is not just a mere annoyance, a by-product of living in built-up areas, but according to research by the European Environment Agency, environmental noise is a major problem affecting the health and wellbeing of millions of people in Europe. Long-term exposure can lead to stress, disturbed sleep, serious illness

3. Agriculture Maintaining a healthy environment for crops and livestock is vital for farmers. With a busy workload, machines are a lifeline, helping to complete a variety of tasks, from digging and loading, to ditch work, fence building and land clearing. Imagine electric machines that can do all of the work of their diesel counterparts, but without the fumes and lower noise levels. This also makes them ideal to use indoors in livestock buildings. With a full day’s work on a single charge and up to 80 percent charge in as little as one to two hours, they’re certainly up for the job, helping keep operations running smoothly, whilst creating a safer, greener and more peaceful setting for the people, crops, animals and wider environment. 4. Food production The air quality in greenhouses, orchards and fish hatcheries is of paramount importance, having a significant impact on the quality of produce that can be grown. And with customers demanding higher standards of environmental practice and food provenance, quiet, emission-free operations are

the future. Space often is also an issue in greenhouses and hatcheries, with narrow paths presenting a particular challenge and requiring excellent manoeuvrability. Electric compact machines offer the ideal solution: pollution free, quiet and with minimal vibration, they can be safely used on a variety of jobs to help with cleaning, cultivating, maintenance and heavy-lifting jobs. 5. Dust hazards In high-dust environments like sawmills, diesel engines pose a danger because of the potential of sparks from the exhaust. But with electric machines this is no longer an issue. With no engine, and less noise, enabling co-workers to talk to one another more easily, they offer a safer, quieter alternative to diesel for all those heavy lifting jobs. What’s more, they require less maintenance than a diesel machine. Another reason why the near silence of these machines is better for everyone, is that excessive noise is said to seriously harm human health. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), it “can disturb sleep, cause cardiovascular and psychophysiological effects, reduce performance and provoke annoyance responses and changes in social behaviour.” 5. Landscaping Landscaping jobs require a delicate hand, which is why the ECR25 Electric was chosen to work on one of the main show gardens at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show as one of its very first jobs after launching in 2019. The sustainable garden was dubbed the “quietest on site” by BBC film crews, due to the machine’s low noise emissions. An additional benefit for landscaping projects such as this is that there are no pollutants emitted that can damage the precious trees or herbaceous borders. The fumes from a diesel exhaust can even kill buds before they get the chance to grow. It is one of the cleanest possible ways to do all the construction jobs a garden of this stature requires. With the advent of stricter carbon emission regulations, and as we all look to meet our own CO2 reduction targets, electric machines will be key. The electromobility revolution is well and truly here. For more information, visit www.volvoce.com. 

Electric machines are perfect for working in tight spaces with a lack of ventilation.

and can even increase the risk of heart disease and stroke. The near silence of electric machines — such as the Volvo ECR25 Electric and L25 Electric — is the ideal antidote. It also provides the operators with a more peaceful work environment with less vibrations and less noise so they can talk more easily with co-workers. What’s more, they open up practicable working hours. Digging outside a bedroom window, school zone or hospital room — even through the night — is no problem. 2. Indoors The tight spaces and lack of ventilation on most indoor demolition jobs or factory depots can be quite a challenge for users of diesel machines, often precluding their use. The potential exposure of workers to harmful exhaust fumes must be managed with adequate ventilation, which can often be expensive and cumbersome to install. Electric compact machines with zero emissions are the ideal solution. Add to this their near silent operation, and indoor construction and factory depots become ideal candidates for the electromobility revolution.

Workers — and animals — enjoy the zero emissions and low noise levels of Volvo CE’s L25 Electric compact wheel loader.

Volvo Expands Parts Distribution Network in Western U.S. Volvo Construction Equipment has completed a 75,000-sq.-ft. expansion of its Reno, Nev., regional parts distribution center. The project, in conjunction with Volvo Group Service Market Logistics, increases floor space by 125 percent and brings parts closer to construction equipment customers with faster delivery times and reduced shipping costs. Volvo Group has operated the Reno Distribution Center since 2006, supporting the Volvo Trucks and Mack Trucks brands. Globally, North America is one of the largest markets for Volvo CE. More than 20 percent of the region’s total business comes from the western third of the United States. With the expansion, ground orders for California and the Pacific Northwest are now arriving two days faster compared to shipping from the Volvo Group’s central distribution center in Byhalia, Miss. A new dedicated delivery service (DDS) now operates out of Reno as an exclusive carrier to expedite overnight shipments to western U.S. dealers, arriving at dealer branches by as early as 4 a.m. the next day. The regional distribution center offers additional benefits including: • Inventory of critical machine down parts on the shelf in Reno for overnight shipping;

Now, we can offer the same level of uptime support to construction customers.” While the expansion directly impacts customers in the western United States, customers and dealers across the country are benefitting from rebalanced parts volumes throughout the supply chain. Volvo CE ended 2020 with record parts availability and dealer fill rates, despite constraints caused by the pandemic and increased demand on freight carrier services. NorthWestern Energy to Build Transportation Improvements... N.M. Gov. Signs Bill With $250M Power Plant in Montana BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) NorthWestern Energy has announced plans to build a $250 million power plant in Montana as part of an effort to increase its power capacity in the state. The utility announced plans for the 175megawatt gas-fired power plant in Laurel, southwest of Billings, along with a 50-megawatt battery storage project and a five-year agreement to buy 100 megawatts of hydropower. The Laurel Generating Station will be a reciprocating internal combustion engine, or RICE plant, which have become popular tools for balancing resources like wind and solar farms, officials said. It is expected to be available to serve customers by January 2024. “This resource portfolio addresses a key portion of our immediate need for generation capacity while also allowing us to make progress toward our goal of an energy supply portfolio in Montana that reduces the carbon intensity of our electric generation by 90 percent by 2045,” NorthWestern Energy CEO Bob Rowe said. The battery storage project is expected to be operational by late 2023, officials said. It would be used to store wind energy when generation exceeds demand, so the power can be delivered as needed.

Company officials said they will apply later in May for Montana Public Service Commission approval to add the RICE plant and the battery storage project to NorthWestern Energy’s portfolio. NorthWestern Energy also will start receiving 100-MW of capacity from British Columbiaowned BC Hydro stating in 2023 through 2028. NorthWestern Energy also is a gas company with retail demand of 560 million cu. ft. annually in Montana. The company owns three natural gas storage fields in the state, as well as two transmission pipelines through subsidiaries, plus connections to four other transmission systems. The Laurel Generating Station is the second gasfired power plant announced by the company in the last 12 months. The utility announced the construction of a 58-megawatt RICE plant near Huron, South Dakota in May 2020, at a cost of $84 million. Some have argued that gas-fired plants, like the one proposed in Laurel, are not necessary as a transitional energy source. The U.S. Energy Information Administration has said carbon dioxide emissions from gas-fired plants are 54 percent of coal plants producing the same level of energy. 

$300M for Road Upgrades CARLSBAD, N.M. (AP) A coalition of energy companies has thanked government leaders after receiving millions of dollars of road improvements in the southeast New Mexico. Democratic Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed the $7.4 billion state budget for next year, which includes $300 million for roadway infrastructure and improvements, the Carlsbad Current-Argus reported. Lawmakers agreed to allocate $87 million for road projects across southeast New Mexico from that funding, said Tracee Bentley, CEO of the Permian Strategic Partnership. “The approved budget and legislation will have an enormous impact on road safety advancements in southeastern New Mexico,” Bentley said. “The projects supported through this funding will allow for direct action to improve priority roads projects in local communities, as well as help expedite work already under way on state roadways.” Permian Strategic Partnership said in a statement that the recently approved funding is in addition to critical transportation funding already given to local projects in recent years, including work on State Road 128 and U.S. Route 285. Bentley said the state will now have opportunities to secure federal funding for road projects through proposed infrastructure investments moving through Congress. “We appreciate legislators like Sen. Gay Kernan and State Rep. Cathrynn Brown (R-55), who understand the region and our local communities, representing the Permian in the Legislature,” Bentley said, adding that Department of Transportation Secretary Michael Sandoval demonstrated a commitment to supporting roads in the Permian Basin. 

Crews Pour Concrete Deck On Houghton Road/I-10 Structure Quality Used Water We Deliver Worldwide!

Drivers southeast of downtown Tucson will see a major step forward in an interchange reconstruction project as crews pour the concrete bridge deck on the new Houghton Road structure at Interstate 10. The concrete work on the bridge comes as the Arizona Department of Transportation reaches the halfway point of a $24.4 million project to rebuild the interchange. While drivers have experienced several temporary ramp and lane shifts during the project, the concrete pour will allow drivers to see the bridge’s final driving surface come into view. This summer, traffic on Houghton Road will move from the existing two-lane bridge to the new six-lane structure. Motorists will cross I-10 in a temporary lane configuration for several months while crews demolish the old bridge and complete building new ramps on the east side of the interchange. Throughout the project, drivers should expect periodic traffic shifts, along with some overnight and weekend restrictions. The project, which began in August 2020, is scheduled to be complete by the end of 2021. It will feature southern Arizona’s first diverg-

ing diamond interchange, a significant change from the existing diamond interchange. When the diverging diamond configuration is in place, traffic on Houghton Road will make a temporary shift to the left side of Houghton Road while crossing I-10. This allows for left turns onto the entrance ramps without waiting at an additional traffic signal. This design promotes safety because drivers turning left don’t cross traffic while entering the on-ramp. More than 115 diverging diamond interchanges are in use in the U.S. Ariona’s first full diverging diamond interchange opened in late 2020 at Interstate 17 and Happy Valley Road in Phoenix. The concrete work required I-10 to close in both directions over a span of two days. During that time, drivers were detoured over the entrance and exit ramps, but Houghton Road remained open. Construction activities resulted in minimal delays for motorists in the area. AEM Lauds Problem Solvers Caucus On Infrastructure Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) senior vice president of government and industry relations Kip Eideberg issued the following statement applauding the Problem Solvers Caucus on its new report of bipartisan policy recommendations to build a strong, successful 21st century infrastructure network for America: “Americans are ready for a transformational investment in our nation’s infrastructure so we can grow our economy, improve our quality of life and protect our environment for the generations to fol-

low,” said Eideberg. “The Association of Equipment Manufacturers applauds the 58 Republicans and Democratic members of the Problem Solvers Caucus for putting forward a set of bipartisan and commonsense policy solutions that will address today’s challenges and capture future opportunities. “President Biden’s American Jobs Plan, bipartisan support in Congress for a surface transportation reauthorization bill, and today’s unveiling of the Rebuilding America’s Infrastructure Report for the

117th Congress by the Problem Solvers Caucus, point to growing momentum for a modern, sustainable and equitable infrastructure for all Americans. We urge the business community and policymakers to put policy ahead of politics and to work together to embrace and advance an affirmative vision for 21st century infrastructure and break free from the same old policies that have failed to move our country forward.” The Association of Equipment Manufacturers recently joined the

Brookings Institution in unveiling a new report outlining a new affirmative vision for U.S. infrastructure titled “Rebuild With Purpose: An Affirmative Vision for 21st Century American Infrastructure.” The Association of Equipment Manufacturers also announced its commitment to a set of national policy priorities to revitalize the infrastructure systems that move the American economy, including fiscal health, resilience, workforce and digitalization. Rockster Impactor Aids Sustainability of Hawaiian Paradise After a long cruise over the Atlantic Ocean through the Panama Canal, and across the Pacific, Rockster’s mobile impact crusher R700S reached Hawaii — more precisely the island of Oahu. Arist de Wolff and his team of 25 motivated employees were very excited about the arrival of their brand new Austrian crushing plant. Alakona Corp., founded in 1982 by de Wolff’s father Mervyn de Wolff, is an asphalt paving and paving maintenance contracting firm, situated in the Hawaiian capital, Honolulu. Alakona Corp serves Oahu and the neighbor islands, with a wide list of clients that includes federal, state, city and county governments, commercial enterprises, developers, property managers, condominium associations and individual owners. At the very beginning, Alakona Corp focused on pavement maintenance with emphasis on slurry seal, seal coating and minor asphalt repairs. During the recent years the company has moved toward its present service/product mix, deriving its income from asphalt repair, asphalt overlay, new asphalt lay, pavement maintenance, as well as slurry seal, seal coat and crack fill. Alakona’s Perfect Crusher Is Designed, Produced in Austria Alakona owns several machines it needs for its core business, like pavers, rollers, loaders, excavators, slurry and seal coat applicators. When it searched for a crusher to expand its business, it put its focus on compact machinery below 25 tons, which exactly fits its fleet. “We feel that Austrian engineers are really honest. Wolfgang Kormann explained in detail how the machine could be beneficial to us and it is true. We are so flexible in terms of processing different

aggregates and the material we produce with our crusher is of high value. We do also like the fact that the return belt can be turned aside, and we can make another fraction, as well as the fine side belt that can be pulled off. “The screen box is also very beneficial as it allows us to produce different material sizes by just switching some screens. There are some options that others don’t have, and we are very enthusiastic about the hydrostatic drive”, said Arist de Wolff. Due to this drive system, the performance of the R700S is constantly high, as the hydrostatic pressure always adjusts to the power requirements of the crusher, de Wolff added. This leads to a lower diesel consumption per ton of production because the diesel engine always stays within the optimum speed range. New Line of Business: Processing of RAP It was a logical step for Alakona to put emphasis on a recycling business. “Obviously, natural rock isn’t gonna be there forever, in future we would have to ship it in from

the mainland. Sustainability is the key factor. We need a lot of material for subbases, base coarse or backfills. Using reclaimed asphalt pavement instead of natural aggregate saves resources and money. Moreover, RAP contains a bit of bitumen, it is like a glue, holding everything together and giving more compaction”, said de Wolff. Using the attached screening system, Alakona crushes asphalt from 1 ½ to 2 in. to 1 ½ in. minus of a final size material. “We’re doing a bunch of tests like the CBR, to make sure the final material is suitable for reuse in our construction projects,” he added. The Californian Bearing Ratio (CBR) test is a penetration test used to evaluate the subgrade strength of roads and pavements. Ever Heard of Coral Crushing? Another material that Alakona processes with the new Rockster crusher is coral. In Hawaii you find a lot of coral shells underneath the soil. So, when Alakona works on street construction sites close to the ocean they usually excavate coral.

A very successful family business: FLTR – Operator Jon Keck, Owners Mervyn de Wolff, Betsy Wilson, Max de Wolff and Arist de Wolff with his wife and their two girls.

Without a screening system, they run a 3 in. minus final product, used mostly for landscaping. “We like the possibility to use the stockpile belt to get another fraction. Especially for processing coral, we run a 2 to 3 in. coarse aggregate from the side belt and 1 ½ in. minus from the screen. Coral is quite a hard rock with high density. The crushed material contains less fines than the crushed asphalt. We can use it as base coarse for house or concrete paths”, de Wolff said.

Alakona Corp from Honolulu relies on a high-quality Austrian crusher brand to process RAP and coral with its new R700S Rockster portable crushing plant.

Easy Transport Facilitates Entry in Contracting Business With a screen box and return belt, the Rockster R700S weighs only 50,300 lbs. (22.8 tons) and can be easily transported with Alakona’s own flatbed truck without the need of transport permits. This gives great flexibility in terms of future plans, to get a foot in the door of contracting business. It also saves a lot of time and money. “We are able to crush so many kinds of material. Within four days of training this summer, we crushed RAP, coral, concrete and basalt. There are so many possibilities for a lot of different customers like construction companies, privates and of course municipalities. You would think that people on an island would be more aggressive into researching, testing and using recycled material, but they are hesitant in trying new things. It needs to be pushed more and people need to understand that this is the future. There needs to be recycled material especially in construction fields where we could save so much natural resources,” de Wolff said. For more information, visit www.rockster.at. 

Contractor Puts the ‘Hammer Down’ With Fecon Bull Hog Eric Adams puts the soul in sole proprietorship. Whether a project calls for clearing hundreds of trees or a hundred acres of brush, Adams brings the whole Hammer Down team (himself and his Bobcat 770) to tackle the job. Thankfully for Adams he’s got the right equipment and support team around him to keep his business running and his customers happy. Nestled in Perry, Ohio, Hammer Down tackles both residential and commercial land clearing and beautification projects. At first, Adams went from job to job renting mulchers and trying out different brands, before making the investment for a more permanent attachment solution. While looking to upgrade his equipment, Adams knew that he needed an attachment with the durability and uptime to keep his business running smoothly. Then opportunity met preparation on the lot of Company Wrench in Cleveland when Adams demoed Fecon’s BH74 Bull Hog. Bull Hog mulchers are designed for any machine and have a variety of tool options to meet the demands of any project Hammer Down could need. Adams liked the attachment and the demo unit pricing so much he left the dealership with the demo unit in tow. The Bull Hog is manufactured just down the road in Lebanon, Ohio, so Adams figured that parts and service support would be quick — whether it was coming from the factory or from Company Wrench. The heavy steel materials and the quality welding that goes into each mulcher also was evident to Adams. Adams’s first job using the Bull Hog skid wasn’t a walk in the park: A 2-acre land clearing project with 250 to 300 eight-in. diameter birch trees, some up to 150 ft. tall. The predominantly flat property had been logged at some point, so the vegetation was regrowth rather than virgin materials, but it all had to go to make room for a planned garden center. So how do you level more than 100 ft. tall trees to ground level? One at a time. Thankfully the Bull Hog’s depth control rotor (DCR) helped Adams pace out his work, keeping the mulcher from over biting, which in turn keeps the carrier from bogging down and ramping back up to operating speed. The Bull Hog’s variable two speed motor option automatically adjusts to maximize rotor speed and torque to changing material loads, keeping the engine running and Adams’s project on track. The DCR control rings provide a smaller bite to create a fast cut with less horsepower draw. When processing lighter materials, the machine is running at higher RPMs and

takes more bites per second with finer material sizing. On heavier materials, the Bull Hog delivers more rotor torque to keep the rotor turning when other machines stall.

Compared to Adams’s other mulcher experiences, the DCR provided a noticeable difference in production, he said. “It was a no-brainer to go with the depth

control rotor to keep production high and, obviously, keep wear and tear on my machine lower as much as possible. It just makes your machine run more efficient compared to all of the others that I’ve run.” With a clean slate to work with Adams’s customer was able to plot and plan out their future garden center business without losing the forest for the trees. In-between jobs, Company Wrench supplied Adams with a fresh set of 30 Viking Axe tools to put on his used Bull Hog which opened up even more possibilities for him. “I thought the Fecon was performing very well from the rip. Then, when I put those brand new teeth on, wow, did that change everything.” The DCR Viking Axe blades are reinforced behind the knife’s edge for increased strength and can be easily flipped to reveal a new cutting edge. That keeps Hammer Down cutting for twice as long. The steel blade’s design also produces a finer output. Compared to sharpening the teeth every eight to ten hours, Adams’s new teeth only require sharpening after 20 to 25 hours of use, which translates to more uptime and more full days mulching. If Adams ever feels like he needs a quick fix he keeps a cordless grinder in his service truck to keep things moving during projects, he said. In addition to giving the teeth a look at the end of the day, and sharpening as needed, Adams gives the zirc fittings a shot of grease. In between jobs he pressure washes the carrier and mulcher and gives both a more thorough inspection once the forest dust, dirt and detritus has been washed away. Adams put his new teeth to use on a twoday 4-acre beautification project in Chesterland, Ohio, clearing out underbrush, apple trees and a thick wooded area with trees ranging from 4 to 6 in. in diameter. The job cleaned up a few different tree line areas on the sloping property and enabled the homeowners to see their pond from their home. Engineered and built to withstand all types of mulching conditions, Fecon’s Bull Hog skid steer helped Adams clear everything in his Bobcat’s way down to ground level. Adams knew when he demoed Fecon’s Bull Hog unit at Company Wrench that he was ready to upgrade his land clearing equipment. Now with a few projects under his belt, he is just starting to understand the value his gear is adding to his workflow. His advice to other sole proprietors looking to get into mulching? Keep up with maintenance schedules, take your time, and of course, be safe. For more information, visit www.Fecon.com. 

Registration Opens for GIE+EXPO 2021 as October Event Returns in Person Registration is open, and plans are under way for GIE+EXPO to bring the industry back together in person this October. Both attendees and exhibitors have indicated they are eager to participate in the annual trade show, which is set for Oct. 20 to 22 at the Kentucky Exposition Center. Online registration — only $20 through Sept. 9 — is available at gie-expo.com. As of April, 675 companies had already signed on to exhibit at GIE+EXPO and the co-located Hardscape North America — an 18 percent increase over the same time in 2019. More than 70 are new exhibitors. And, with the expo center’s recent renovations to the demo area, exhibitors are looking forward to showcasing their latest innovations outdoors where attendees can test drive equipment. “We look forward to attending the GIE+EXPO every year and are eager to get back to the show in 2021,” said Chris Durig, VP of sales, BlueBird Turf Products. “It is the only industry show that provides an audience of distributors, dealers and landscapers at a single event. Additionally, it is the only industry show that provides opportunities for an indoor exhibit as well as outdoor product demonstrations.” Warren Sellers, show manager, said attendees also are ready to gather in person. According to a recent survey of past attendees, 91 percent of landscape professionals and 84 percent of dealers are likely to attend this year.

Social Media, Ad Campaign Pushes for Economic Growth Via Infrastructure The transportation construction, labor and business community are jointly launching an ad and social media campaign to push for action this year by Congress and the Biden administration on a transportation infrastructure investment package that improves mobility and fuels economic growth. Beginning April 12, a television spot will run inside the Beltway aimed at members of Congress, staff and other policymakers. The TV commercial will be supplemented by online ads that began April 10 on social media and influential digital sites popular with D.C. legislators and influencers. The campaign will extend on April 26 with online social media and website advertisements running in the states and districts of 22 key members of Congress. The ads will run during congressional recesses. The central message of the “Moving Forward” campaign: investing in transportation infrastructure is crucial to continuing the U.S. economic recovery and creating jobs. The ads direct viewers to a landing page on the Transportation Construction Coalition website where the economic benefits of transportation infrastructure investment are spelled out. The television spot and samples of the digital ads are available at FundInfrastructureNow.org. The campaign is an initiative of the Transportation Construction Coalition (TCC) and U.S. Chamber of

Commerce-led Americans for Transportation Mobility (ATM) coalition. The TCC and ATM ads will run through late May. er sizes,” said Randy Anderson, Papich’s project manager. “We also had three longstick excavators that we used primarily to reach the middle of the debris flow. The flow was very unstable — it primarily consisted of saturated soil, wood and rock. We had to work into it from the perimeters and we used some of the logs from the debris to create temporary working platforms. It was an innovative approach. “Every morning we would have a safety meeting to discuss the day’s work and with up to 30 people at any given time over the past three months to explain where we were at and the hazards to expect,” he added. “Safety was always at the forefront. We didn’t have one injury to our crews or the travelling public. We had more than 60 loads of equipment mobilizing up both sides of the highway, which was very curvy, with places where two cars could barely pass.” Concerns about loose rock and debris are ever present, but fortunately there were no close calls during this phase. As the crews removed more debris, preparations were ongoing to bring slide material from another landslide area, 3 mi. away, to use for the filing operation. “It was ideal material for use as the moisture content and the minimal rock size was perfect for a fill of this type,” said Anderson. “It was ideal, especially knowing that we would have to tunnel through it again.” As the excavation was ongoing, some blasting was required to remove some of the existing rock in the new culvert alignment. “We were told that when the highway was constructed, they put a culvert at the bottom of the canyon and filled over it with whatever materials they had,” said Anderson. “Once this culvert was plugged, the debris flow reached the roadway surface, overflowed and washed out the road and hillside.” Temporary haul roads to the bottom of the canyon were required to reach the debris at the lower levels. The trees that were swept down helped with this effort, especially those that were 40-ft. tall. “We worked our way in to build the access roads and with excavators we leapfrogged the material out to where it could be loaded into trucks from ATI Trucking,” said Anderson. “At times we had up to 40 trucks hauling material to the

stockpile sites. Right now we’re working to remove about 25,000 yards that we temporarily stockpiled through the clean-up process.” Most of the work to place the fill was conducted with Cat and John Deere dozers and compactors. “We started with a smaller vibratory deep compactor, a sheepsfoot compactor, and once we got high enough and had enough room on the bench, we brought in a Cat 815 compactor,” said Anderson. “We brought in between 1,500 to 1,800 cubic yards of import a day. “At the end of a shift, we brought the equipment above the flow just in case something could have happened,” said Anderson. “This was where we would fuel our equipment.” Pacific Boring will be brought in to do the boring. “They felt that having 10 feet of fill over the top of the proposed culvert would be adequate to allow them to start their operations while the highway was open,” said Anderson. Prior to the road construction, two 24-in. culverts and a 60-in. diameter corrugated metal pipe culvert were installed above the newly designed 10-ft. culvert. The two 24-in. culverts were placed so that should a similar incident happen

again, Caltrans crews can reach down and clear the opening to keep water from overtopping the road surface and washing out the road. With the new pipe coming in, engineering is crucial. “This is probably going to be the toughest phase of the job as far as using engineering and survey,” said Anderson. “We brought in a structural engineer to help us with the backboard construction that the tunneling device will push against to push the casing through. The subcontractor did a mock-up in their construction yard to make sure that the equipment could operate properly and give them the confidence that they can make this work.” The new road consists of two 12-ft. lanes with two 4-ft. shoulders and a berm on the downhill side. Guardrail will be placed on the west side, which will protect a 100-ft. slope down to the ocean below. The road section consists of 18 in. of Class 2 base, topped with 6 in. of a warm mix design HMA. “Our warm mix designs are a new technology that Caltrans has adopted for long-range projects,” said Anderson. “It stays warmer much longer. For the road construction, Cat pavers and rollers and John Deere blades were employed. Superintendent Augie Wilhite and Foreman Todd Bright have been indispensable in the progress of the project. “Todd went up with both Jason Papich, the owner and myself,” said Anderson. “We were called on January 28 when the water was starting to over-crest the highway. We were on our way from the north side of Monterey and when we got there on January 29, the road was washed out. We arrived at 9 a.m. and started formulating a plan to get equipment on the road. We were working on January 30 and had mobilized 10 pieces of equipment by that morning. “Todd and Augie worked side-by-side the whole time,” he added. “Most of the guys worked three straight months. We never stopped, even when it rained. In the end, we had total of two lost days due to shutdowns. Mother Nature treated us well.” Peak days had 30 Papich and 15 subcontractor employees on-site, putting in 12 to 13 hour every day for 85 days. “We had standby equipment on site just in case some see PAPICH page 48

Get the Most Out of Your Stand-On Skid Steer Attachments Rakes Rake attachments will quickly become a landscaper’s best friend. They are an ideal attachment to clean, level and prepare job sites. They also are a great tool to help smooth or loosen up soil for sodding or seeding tasking. The hydraulic requirements for most stand-on skid-steers to run a box rake are 10 to 14 gpm, but machines that boast higher hydraulic horsepower will provide even more drum torque to break up hardpack or clay soils.

By: Brant Kukuk SPECIAL TO CEG

With the rising temperatures of the summer months comes the rise in demand for landscape, hardscape, tree care and other construction grade jobs. One of the biggest machine assets for operators in these spaces is a stand-on skid steer. Today’s stand-on skid steers offer power, 360-degree visibility and simple maneuverability — all benefits that are keeping operators efficient on the job site. But another benefit of a stand-on skid steer is the ability to equip a growing variety of attachments, which allows stand-on skid steers to be utilized in multiple jobsites tasks — and in some cases, multiple different industries. With the right attachment assortment, a stand-on skid steer can be a onemachine-solution. When working with attachments, the standard rule of thumb is that a contractor should have three industry-specific attachments in their arsenal to succeed in a particular industry. For example, if a contractor is working in underground road work, they should consider investing in microtrenching attachments, coring attachments and vacuum-lifting attachments, in addition to the standard forks, buckets and grapples. This attachment variety will give them the ability to bid on the widest range of jobs in their preferred industry, and it will help keep them versatile and agile on the job site. A Variety of Solutions Stand-on skid-steers and the versatility of their attachments represent an opportunity for increased jobsite productivity. The ability to effortlessly switch out a variety of attachments allows operators to diversify their business without the overhead of investing in multiple different machines. Instead they can use one machine and invest in more affordable attachments. From a trencher to a bucket, auger or fork, there are many attachments available that can help operators get the most ROI out of their stand-on skid-steer. Here a some of the most popular ones.

One benefit of a stand-on skid steer is the ability to equip a growing variety of attachments, which allows stand-on skid steers to be utilized in multiple jobsites tasks — and in some cases, multiple different industries.

Buckets Arguably the most popular attachment for stand-on skid steers, buckets help operators lift large piles of material or debris that need to be relocated or disposed of. There are a variety of bucket types to choose from, depending on application. For example, dirt buckets are primarily used for transporting topsoil and backfilling — making them ideal for a variety of jobs. While grapple buckets come with hydraulic clamps to hold unstable material, making them ideal for tree care or landscaping. There also are high-capacity buckets, buckets with teeth for digging and 4-in-1 buckets that are ideal for handling multiple projects on the job site.

Trenchers By using a trencher attachment, operators can complete trenching tasks without need of specialized trencher onsite. While individual trenchers have a place in the underground construction world, trencher attachments are great for operators looking to eliminate need of a second machine on the job. Ideal for landscape, plumbing and electrical projects, a trencher attachment can install everything from irrigation and drainage systems to electric, utility or fiber. Most trencher attachments are available in 4, 6- and 8-in widths.

Forks Pallet forks are a staple for any stand-on skid-steer. The traditional attachment category is great for loading and unloading material from a trailer or truck bed and making material handling simple when traveling across tricky terrain. A pair of pallet forks can help operators move a variety of materials like sod, bricks, trees and ornamental garden boulders.

Vibratory Plow Ideal for residential fiber installation, cable and lawn irrigation, a plow attachment delivers the most power and reliability on tight job sites. With two blades to choose from — the pull blade and feed blade — which can be adjusted between 6 and 24 in., vibratory plows offer a cost-effective solution that can meet fiber installation-depth requirements in various areas.

Augers Ideal for landscaping and tree care jobs that require multiple holes in the ground, an auger attachment will expedite creating holes, allowing operators to more quickly plant trees or install fence posts than if they were hand-digging or relying on hand-held augers. By speeding up these tasks, operators can take on more jobs in a day, increasing their ROI. Auger attachments are available in in a variety of bit styles and sizes which typically range from 6 to 36 in. Microtrencher Since microtrenching is typically done in the gutter pan which parallels the road, microtrencher attachments are designed to cut through both concrete and asphalt in controlled increments so contractors don’t need to stop traffic. This saves on traffic redirection headaches and associated costs. Microtrenching is typically done in the gutter pan that parallels the road where the asphalt meets concrete of the curb. There are two typical blades equipped in most microtrenching attachments. The first is a conical style bit that rotates in a holder and functions like a traditional rock saw. The second is a PDC blade which is composed of diamond with carbide. The conical bits are generally the more affordable option between the two, but diamond PDC blades are growing in popularity due to their cleaner cut and longer lifespan. While a conical bit will be effective from 500 to 1,000 ft. — meaning that contractors will likely need to replace bits daily — a diamond PDC blade will last up to 20,000 ft. before it needs to be replaced. 

Mecalac Hydraulic Thumb Increases Handling Ability Mecalac, a global designer, manufacturer and distributor of compact construction equipment for urban environments, offers a new hydraulic thumb option for its recently re-configured two-piece boom with offset, available for 6MCR skid excavators and 7MWR wheeled excavator models. The new thumb makes it easy to pick up, maintain and move large or long objects, transforming material handling capabilities for applications such as truck loading or pipe laying. This makes it ideal for contractors in a number of industries including utilities, landscaping, road maintenance and general construction, according to the manufacturer. “Mecalac believes a machine that doesn’t make an operator’s life easier has no place on the job site,” said Peter Bigwood, general manager of Mecalac North America. “The hydraulic thumb not only increases productivity, it keeps workers safer and makes their lives easier.” The hydraulic thumb option permanently mounts to the bucket linkage where it is powered by the boom’s hydraulic cylinder. Unlike grappling buckets or other attachments that must be dismantled during other operations, the new hydraulic thumb can remain attached during digging work or

other tasks. The thumb is composed of four teeth and is compatible with Mecalac’s CONNECT hydraulic quick coupler. When engaged, the constant pressure exerted on the thumb throughout the cylinders stroke ensures precise control of the load, allowing operators to efficiently move boulders, pipes and other cumbersome objects without leaving the cab or changing the attachment. The new hydraulic thumb option is available on 6MCR and 7MWR models with Mecalac’s two-piece boom with offset and can be added to existing models with this boom, as well. This variation of Mecalac’s boom design maintains the large range of motion and lifting force. Additionally, positioning the stick cylinder above the boom, rather than underneath, provides a wider working angle, faster movement and a higher penetration force that is ideal for excavation and truck loading applications, according to the manufacturer. Dimensions and work envelope remain similar to the standard boom, and attachments, such as loader buckets and pallet forks, are still compatible. For more information, visit www.mecalac.com. 

Danuser Introduces New Mini-Skid Steer Mounted EP Auger Danuser has introduced a new mounting system to make its EP Auger compatible for mini-skid steers. The auger features a planetary gear drive that is up to 42 percent stronger, with greater torque for drilling through hard-compacted surfaces, according to the manufacturer. “Models range from 6 to 35 gpm and from 1,500 to 3,500 psi, making this a very versatile tool for the construction and agricultural industries,” said Glenn Danuser, company coowner. Other features include the following: • The mount utilizes the same EP unit with the housing (no need to stock a special unit). • Swings from a knuckle to allow left-to-right, forward-toback leveling. • Most vehicles with 72 in. or greater hinge pin height may use standard 4-ft.-length augers. Hinge pin heights 71 in. or shorter require 3-ft.-length augers, maximum. Mounts also are available for front-end loaders, backhoes, excavators and other skid steer models. Most vehicles with 72 in. or greater hinge pin height may use standard 4-ft.-length augers. For more information, visit Danuser.com. 

placed a plaque commemorating his years of service on its property in Savannah, Ga. “Donny Wild was noticed by company founder, Mr. Joseph Cyril Bamford, Mr. JCB, when he was working for another manufacturer in Rocester, England. Mr. JCB appreciated his work and offered him a job on the spot. From that point on, Donny was a loyal JCB team member, eventually moving to the United States to demonstrate the JCB backhoe around the country,” said Tonya Poole, vice president of human resources of JCB North America. “Donny logged so many miles each week working for JCB, he became a million-mile traveller with most of the U.S. airlines.” Mr. Wild will be remembered as a beloved member of the JCB team, one who was always willing to lend a hand. “Donny was happy at work, always glad to be at JCB,” said Neil Smith, former demonstration manager of JCB North America. “He dedicated his life to JCB and loved nothing more than demonstrating JCB machines, showing others JCB’s latest innovations with great pride. Even after retirement, he couldn’t stay away from JCB and we looked forward to his visits. He will be sorely missed, having trained many JCB employees on our machinery.” Although Mr. Wild was born across the ocean in Staffordshire, England, his legacy will be memorialized at JCB North America headquarters in Savannah, Ga., under the canopy of an oak tree outside the JCB facility he loved. Kobelco Construction Machinery USA Announces New Engine Supply Solution Kobelco Construction Machinery USA has diligently and quickly secured an engine supply solution for the large hydraulic excavator and crane models that were recently affected by a Hino Motors’ EPA emission certification issue in the North American market. This good news comes following the company’s announcement as a result of Hino Motors’ delay in acquiring the 2021 North American EPA emission certifications for the new engines that are utilized for North America production for select Kobelco excavators and imported cranes. All other Kobelco excavator models that are available in North America will continue production with no interruption of supply (1.7 to 16 metric ton units). Kobelco’s relationship with Hino Motors remains intact on a global basis outside of North America. “We are happy to announce that agreements are in place and an engine

supply solution for Kobelco USA model excavators and cranes has been solidified,” said Jack Fendrick, COO and Vice President of Kobelco USA. “Our focus is to not only provide an ample supply of our full line-up of machines with certified engines as soon as possible, but to do so in a manner that maintains the Kobelco quality and performance that has been the cornerstone of success for our dealers and our customers.” Two global market-leading engine manufacturers that already supply Kobelco with mini and mid-range sized excavator engines, have now been contracted to supply the additional engines required for the larger conventional and short radius models that were impacted. Yanmar will supply engines for the SK170, SK210, SK230SR, SK260 and the SK270SR Kobelco excavator models. In addition, Isuzu will supply engines for the SK300, SK350,

SK380SR, SK390, and the SK500 excavator models. Isuzu also will supply engines for the Kobelco CK 800, CK 850, CK 1100, CK 1200, CK 1600, CK 2000, and CK 2750 crawler cranes. Most of these Kobelco units will show increased horsepower with the specified Yanmar or Isuzu replacement engines. Parts for the Kobelco excavators and cranes that are currently operating with Hino engines in North America will remain readily available from Kobelco dealers. All Kobelco excavators and cranes in North America that were either previously manufactured, or will be manufactured in 2021, meet the EPA emission requirements and are not affected by this change. Creative Design Fuels Bauer Built’s Future Plans Among the top product lines are the SD-36 off-road side-dump trailer and the SMS-32 manure spreader.

By Ruksana Hussain CEG CORRESPONDENT

When Vaughn Bauer began designing and manufacturing folding planters for local agriculture in Paton, Iowa, he was simply improving upon the design and utility of machinery used commonly by farmers in the area. Not only did he create and develop his own unique solutions, but he also helped others with his expertise, as well. Word caught on quickly and he became known for his innovations. What began as Paton Machine and Welding, a machine, weld and paint garage for custom jobs that opened in 1982, is now Bauer Built Manufacturing (BBM), an 80staff strong operation housed in a 300,000sq.-ft. large-scale manufacturing facility with services including CNC machining, laser cutting and saw cutting, welding and assembly. The company specializes in designing, manufacturing and assembling construction and agricultural machinery for clients within and outside the United States. The company’s tremendous growth in these 40 years has included an interest from American manufacturing behemoth Deere & Company. In 2002, a team from John Deere came knocking on Bauer’s door, having observed his creativity in action, and leading to Bauer working exclusively with

the company on cobranded planters. The Deere Bauer toolbars are said to be the only cobranding John Deere has ever done on equipment in the country. In 2013, Deere & Company acquired part of BBM and in 2015, Bauer was recognized with the Greene County Farm Bureau Distinguished Service to Ag Award for his contributions to the area and the industry. “Our main forte now is we are a big enough shop that we can handle large products and projects to do start-to-finish manufacturing. Where a lot of places only specialize in welding or machining, we can do everything,” said Design Engineer Garret Johnson, an Iowa State University agricultural engineering graduate who has worked at BBM for four years. His work entails creating new products, custom fixtures, designing single parts or creating complex assemblies as needs may arise in-house. “I enjoy working here mostly because of the constant change in workflow. I’ve built and designed so many things in the course of my time here ... A lot of companies will reach out to us because of our short timeframes and what we can do,” he said, which he attributes to “the nature of the facility, the resources we can allocate to a project, and the people we can provide.” Specialty equipment at Bauer includes a Tanaka LMRV TF6000 plate laser, measuring 120 ft. long by 10 ft. wide, and two

Mazak 3D FABRI GEAR 300 tube lasers, a niche product that can deal with up to 50-ft. tubes. For high production weldments, Bauer has two robotic welding cells — a Lincoln Electric System 55 and a Wolf Robot (that can hold up to 7,000 lbs.). Two paint booths — a powder gun booth and a liquid gun booth — allow for larger paint components and custom manufacturing. When it comes to custom clients, work begins with creating a 3D model of the product that is shared with manufacturing engineers “on how we want to process it in our facility.” The order is released to the shop where it then gets welded, painted and assembled. BBM’s primary markets are construction and agriculture. Among the top product lines are the SD-36 off-road side-dump trailer and the SMS-32 manure spreader. One is a 40ton off-road side-dump and the other is a 35ton industrial strength manure spreader for custom applicators. The side dump trailer was designed with contractors in mind to meet their needs for various jobs in soft conditions and has seen growing demand through the Midwest. It moves material faster, offers ease of operation and durability and is priced competitively, according to the manufacturer. Features include hydraulic suspension and capacity, 360-degree rollover hitch with

either ag or gooseneck hitch-style option, self-steer rear axle and triple-axle design and tandem option. Recent customers include Fehn Companies in Minnesota, Murphy Excavating in Kentucky and Waringa Farming in Australia. With business ramping up again this year following the slump brought on by the pandemic, BBM is eyeing markets on both coasts and internationally. While the pandemic did affect BBM with production going slow as some of the companies it worked with were affected, there was no direct impact within the company itself. With a spacious manufacturing facility and staff spread out across functions, the offices and factories never closed, and there were no local county-mandated closures. Johnson did share that finding skilled labor is a challenge “as a whole in the manufacturing industry. In an effort to build the future of manufacturing, BBM is engaged with the area community colleges and high school career academies promoting the theory that a skilled trade is more than a job, it is a career without the burden of debt associated with bachelor’s degrees.” Another challenge is being able to compete economically in a niche area of the industry. Despite that, he voiced promise in business picking up again and demand for Bauer’s trailers on the rise.  CEG

equipment broke down and a full-time mechanic to make sure any break downs were mitigated,” said Anderson. ‘We had a 10,000 gallon fuel trailer that we shuttled to the equipment every night. I’ve been in this business for 42 years and this was our biggest challenge. It was the most rewarding job that I had in my entire career.” The subcontractors include Dean’s Welding; Super Seal, and Stripe; Myers Drilling; and Avila Traffic Safety. Materials brought in for the new road included 1,600 tons of asphalt and 3,000 tons of base. Papich purchases and rents equipment from dealerships such as Isco Machinery Rentals and United Rentals, and Quinn Company, which supplies Cat equipment. “We have very good relationships with the dealerships locally,” said Anderson. “We’re one of the bigger contractors in the area, so they cater to us and help us. They were instrumental in helping us get the project done. We would call on a Sunday and they would have a part in the dropbox on Monday morning. They worked seven days a week along with us, making sure we got what we needed. “Our material suppliers, Granite

Prior to the road construction, two 24-in. culverts and a 60-in. diameter corrugated metal pipe culvert were installed above the newly designed 10-ft. culvert. The two 24-in. culverts were placed so that should a similar incident happen again, Caltrans crews can reach down and clear the opening to keep water from overtopping the road surface and washing out the road.

Rock to the north and Crye Excavating to the south, were instrumental with their timely deliveries,” he added. “We had to have the cooperation of everyone to make this work and it happened.” At noon on April 23, two months ahead of schedule, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) was able to reopen the highway to traffic. “Final roadway paving has advanced at a pace that allowed for this reopening, which is two months earlier than previously announced,” said Kevin Drabinski, Caltrans public information officer of District 5. “This was welcome news indeed for residents, recreationalists, business owners and those who move goods through this region. The construction phases for this emergency project were ordered to allow for the rapid reopening of the road, even as remaining construction tasks are being completed.” Additional Construction The additional construction activities, to be completed over the next few months, cover the installation of a 10-ft. diameter culvert casing, permanent guardrail to replace the K-rail now in place, the construction of headwalls at the culvert inlets, final grading features, and the placement of erosion control measures on both sides of the roadway. The fires that led to the debris flow raged for about 1.5 months in the interior and along

the coast before being out. The flow, which began on Jan. 28 and during the morning hours of Jan. 29, overwhelmed the infrastructure to bring down the road. Fortunately no one was injured or killed. By installing a much larger culvert and putting in place a redundant drainage system, Caltrans is hoping to avoid a future washout. Prior to the washout, a 6.5 ft. diameter culvert provided the protection. It is being replaced with a 10-ft. diameter system designed to let more debris pass through the infrastructure. “Our engineers felt that had we only had 17 inches of rain in late January, the existing culvert would have held,” Drabinski told the Monterey Herald. “What was different about this event was the debris flow from the Dolan Fire burn scar. The design addresses the possibility in the future of a fire followed by a major rain event.” One component yet to be started is a tunneling operation to install a 10-ft. diameter, 1in. thick steel pipe culvert which will pass from the canyon, through the fill below the roadway and out to the ocean. “This key piece of infrastructure will substantially improve water flow capacity during future storm events,” said Drabinski. “It will be augmented by a 5 ft. diameter culvert and two 24 inch culverts, which have already been installed closer to the grade of the highway. The redundancy of the drainage infrastructure is designed to make the highway more resilient to extreme weather conditions which will allow for safe travel.” “Sequencing the phases of construction allows the road to be open while construction continues,” said Drabinski. “We’ll be able to manage that and other construction items with intermittent traffic control.” Approximately 70,000 cubic yards of debris — earth, rock, vegetation and asphalt — was removed from the canyon while a repair design strategy was being evaluated. The material was taken permanent and temporary stockpile sites within a 15 mi. radius of Rat Creek. An enhanced fill strategy, which replaced the lost ground to support the new road, was identified and approved in late February. This led to crews placing 45,000 cu. yds. of fill dirt, capable of being compacted to support the roadway above. While the highway has re-opened, the remaining construction work will require intermittent traffic control at the washout site, which may cause delays of up to 10 minutes. Caltrans has placed message and directional signs to alert motorists when oneway reversing traffic control is needed. The reconstruction project, financed by Caltrans from a state emergency fund, will cost $11.5 million.  CEG

AED Executives Embark On ARTBA Training Resources 2,800-Mi. Motor Coach Tour Aim to Improve Job Safety The Associated Equipment Distributors (AED) executive team embarked on a nineday multi-city motor coach tour on April 21 to visit equipment dealers across the midwest and south central regions to underscore the need for a robust federal infrastructure bill. “Driving for Dealers 2.0” passed through Indiana, Kentucky, Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi and Ohio covering approximately 2,800 mi. before returning to AED’s headquarters on April 30, 2021. “A new, long-term, sustainable federal infrastructure bill is critical to moving our nation forward,” stated AED President and CEO Brian P. McGuire. “Infrastructure jobs will go a long way toward economic recovery as we begin to move past the pandemic. We know our members are looking to elected leaders in Washington to break the logjam and finally produce the bill America needs to ‘Build Back Better’.” AED leadership met with equipment dealers across six states. “We want to hear first-hand the impact an infrastructure bill will have on our members,” said AED Executive Vice President

and COO Robert Henderson. “We will use the data and anecdotes we collect to demonstrate this critical need to the U.S Congress as they consider bi-partisan infrastructure legislation promoted by the Biden Administration.” “Driving for Dealers 2.0” builds on last September’s very successful 10-day, ninecity, 2,600-mi. road trip across the midwest, Great Plains, Rocky Mountains and West, where AED leaders met with more than 30 members one-on-one and in small groups. All meetings required social distancing practices, masks and sanitation measures to ensure everyone’s safety, as was the case on this trip. Last year’s trip also included a stop in Las Vegas, where the AED executive team met with key staff at the Mirage Hotel & Casino to go over plans to conduct the 2021 Summit and CONDEX safely. Summit is taking place on May 24 to 26, and registration has exceeded expectations. For more information on AED’s Driving for Dealers tour, visit AED’s social media outlets, and search the hashtag #aeddrivingfordealers. 

As the transportation construction industry gets ready for its peak season, so too is the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) with its world-class safety training programs. “For decades, ARTBA has worked to create and deliver high-quality education resources that are focused directly on the hazards faced by the transportation construction industry,” said Bradley Sant, ARTBA senior vice president for safety and education. “Through our partnerships with key federal agencies, many of these materials are available at no cost.” As the industry observed National Work Zone Awareness Week (NWZAW) April 2630, ARTBA offered a comprehensive suite of courses to assist employers and workers enhance project site safety. ARTBA manages online, virtual classroom and face-toface training throughout the year. The association also has a large library of reference guides, pamphlets and videos. The Transportation Construction Safety Center provides information on how to safeguard construction workers, motorists, cyclists and pedestrians. The Center’s goal is

to make transportation project sites incidentfree worldwide. The ARTBA Online Learning Center (OLC) offers a self-paced instruction that operates on any device and addresses hazards with advice from experts. Individuals can earn Professional Development Hours (PDHs) that contribute to career advancement while staying abreast of new technologies and regulations. The ARTBA Work Zone Safety Consortium Online Learning System provides free classes to industry professionals. Located in the ARTBA Online Learning Center, this coursework was developed with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). ARTBA also offers the largest online collection of safety resources through the National Work Zone Safety Information Clearinghouse, operated in partnership with the FHWA and the Texas A&M Transportation Institute.
